ATHENS — Good late-morning to you. I’m over here at the Butts-Mehre football complex waiting for the Bulldogs to get back from Sanford Stadium.
Georgia is holding its first scrimmage of preseason camp over there this morning. Warmups began a little before 10 a.m. and it’ll probably be noon or after before the team buses back.
Of course, as seems to be the case often these days, the scrimmage was closed to the media. We’ll be provided with statistics from the scrimmage afterward but otherwise we’re left to the feedback we get from interviews with coach Mark Richt and selected players and coaches to draw any conclusions about how they looked as a team or as individuals. I’ll share those with you just as quickly as I can this afternoon.
One person we’re hoping to talk to afterward is linebacker Jarvis Jones. Jones, of course, just found out from the NCAA yesterday that he’ll be fully eligible to play this season. He’s been off-limits to us media-types to this point but UGA sports communication chief Claude Felton is checking to see if Coach Richt will let him share his feelings on this obvious good news for him and the Bulldogs.
Jones did address the news indirectly Tuesday on his Facebook stage. It said (edited to remove social network jargon and abbreviations): “The right support, great mentors, friends and fans. I’m so grateful for everyone that’s in my corner. I put my trust in a higher power and not in man. No stressing, just hard work and dedication. Stand up Bulldog Nation, we have business to tend to. — #29″
Stay tuned today for more news, notes and quotes. Feel free to share suggestions for subjects you’d like to see addressed between now and Sept. 3.

Our defense should be very good. JJ being back is HUGE.
Lots of positive stuff compared to 2010.
No looking over our shoulder wondering if AJ is coming
Everyone is in camp getting ready to play.
Coach Richt has no excuses to not win at least 9 games. I’m hoping for more. 2002 and 2005 were a blast in the Dome at SECCG.

I am always hopeful for the DAWGS, this year more than most. I really think Mark Richt is a good man and helps develop young men. So I hope that he gets the win column turned around so he can stay. I attended my first Florida game in JAX in 1945 when I was 18 months old and have never been anything but a DAWG since. Of course a few short years before, my mother was Miss Pandora so Athens is in my blood.

I DON’T WANT STATS FROM A CLOSED OFF PRACTICE. I really wish the coaches would try to stay under the radar. It is to our advantage that other teams underestimate this team.

Off Topic, but I think UGA’s new policy on not being able to bring anything into the stadium for picture day with the athletes points out how crazy some of the minutae and the rules are with the NCAA.
I don’t blame UGA for implementing this policy, but If I were involved at the NCAA in a decision making capacity… I would know something were wrong with my system if my member school’s are implementing a can’t bring anything into the stadium for picture day policy.
I’d say to myself… “Are schools really that afraid of breaking a rule inadvertantly that they are concerned that a 5 year old girl will give an athlete a 29 cent pencil or a 9 year old boy will give their favorite running back a homeade t-shirt that says “good luck on the season” or something like that?
I mean seriously, what kind of NCAA violation can happen at picture day that gives one program an unfair advantage over another? The NCAA should hang its head in shame over this news.

I am with I-DOG. It is a sad commentary on the state of affairs in the NCAA that kids can’t bring stuff in to be signed at picture day. My daughter still has a shirt that David Pollack signed for her when she was little. She remembers that til this day because when she asked him to sign her shirt he insisted that she sign his as well! Awesome dude. I guess kids will be cheated out of those memories because adults take advantage of college athletes to try and turn a dollar.
On an unrelated note, I am so thankful that I don’t have to go to other team’s blogs to post stuff that no one cares about!

Bronco, look at the size of your linemen, look at the Dawgs, see Moore looking up at the lights alot.
It’ll be a close game, til the 4th. Then you’ll see alot of tired ponies. Too much muscle on the line for UGA, not enough on the ponies. add the edge from special teams and UGA wins by 2 scores.
Also they will never be a real NC contender as long as they play that weak regular schedual.
GO DAWGS!!!

truedawg, I agree with you on the assessment of the game outcome, however we cannot fault Boise for there schedule. The Pac 10 would not take them with the excuse their stadium was too small. The Big 12 said the same thing. One thing they should take credit for is they will play anyone anywhere without a return home engagement. Their only hope would to be an independent and then load up on 4 or 5 tough games a year, but again the problem would be no one wants to play them home and away.

Hey Chip, maybe I missed it, but have you reported anything about Boo lately? He was a beast at G-Day and I read an article the other day where Bobo was talking about how well the rb’s were practicing and he didn’t even mention Boo as being in the mix. What’s going on?

I’m not taking anything away from Boise, just some fans. They are trying, and yes, if they get a bigger stadium, home / away would be more viable. But it hurts them more than it helps them. Without more tough games, thye don’t know how they will play when they are”hit in the mouth” without challenges they will never know the true measure of there team. Therefore they won’t be ready to play a battle tested all year team.
I do like what I’ve seen so far from sumer camp from the Dawgs, can’t wait til kick off.

similarities between the 1981 and 2011 seasons: In 1981 Ga landed the highest recruited runningback. I think his name was Hershel Walker. Fast forward exactly 30 years. Gerogia has another unknown freshman running back that was highly recruited. His name is Isahia Crowell.Just like the 1981 season Georgia had a good offensive line and defense.History does have a way of repeating itself.

@nasty…actually is was the 1980 season that we landed Hershel and won the NC, but I get your point and agree. Another similarity is that we were coming off a disappointing season in ‘79 when we went 6-5…not quite as bad as last year but it felt terrible at the time.

For UGA fans who may think Boise St. is a powerhouse, let’s take a look at their schedule last year where they won 12 games:
Virginia Tech 33 – 30 (W)
Wyoming 51 – 6 (W)
Oregon State 37 – 24 (W)
New Mexico State 59 – 0 (W)
Toledo 57 – 14 (W)
San Jose State 48 – 0 (W)
Louisiana Tech 49 – 20 (W)
Hawaii 42 – 7 (W)
Idaho 52 – 14 (W)
Fresno State 51 – 0 (W)
Nevada 31 – 34 (L)
Utah State 50 – 14 (W)
Utah 26 – 3 (W)
They mostly took care of business (did Nevada really beat you guys, REALLY???). But regarding the quality of their opponents…I AM NOT IMPRESSED!!!

Regarding the new Picture Day rules, I wonder how much this will hurt attendance this year. Two posters per person. I’d rather had a notebook & have players sign it than a poster. They won’t even be selling Media Guides at this event this year which was disappointing to hear. Why don’t they eliminate picture taking next year? Thanks to the NCAA & the greedy adults who have ruined this day for others!!
