Practice update: Crowell, Samuel, Herrera star in Georgia’s first scrimmage

ATHENS – OK, here’s a raw rundown of the Georgia Bulldogs’ first scrimmage of preseason, conducted Wedneday at Sanford Stadium.  . . .

  • Isaiah Crowell had 13 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown with a long run of 15 yards.
  • Richard Samuel had 11 carries for 82 yards with a long run of 33 yards. However, Samuel fumbled once and Amarlo Herrerra scooped it up and returned it 65 yards for a TD.
  • Ken Malcome had 12 carries for 19 yards with a long run of eight yards.
  • Carlton Thomas had eight carries for 21 yards with a long run of six.
  • “It was evident who was working with the No. 1 unit and who was going against the No. 2 defense,” coach Mark Richt said. “It was rougher going for the 2 offense.”
  • Quarterback Aaron Murray was 9-of-15 for 100 yards with no TDs or interceptions. Hutson Mason was 5-of-19 for 59 with a TD and Christian LeMay was 2-of-4 for 17 yards with the No. 3 offense.
  • Receiving: Aron White 3-47 (32); Samuel 3-32 (14); Marlon Brown 2-46 (35); Jay Rome 2-22 (12), Bradberry 1-20 (TD)
  • PK Blair Walsh was 7-of-8 on field goals with a long of 58. Yes, 58!
  • PK Brandon Bogotay made a 68-yarder in warmups. Yes, 68!
  • Richt really impressed with inside linebacker Alec Ogletree. “Tree,” as everybody calls him, had scrimmage best eight tackles.
  • Other defense: LB Mike Gilliard 4/7 (unassisted/total), LB Herrera 3/7, OLB Jarvis Jones 4/6, DE Abry Jones 4/5 with sack, PBU; LB Ramik Wilson 2 sacks, 1 TFL; LB Christian Robinson 2 TFL, 1 sack; OLB Reuben Faloughi 2 sacks; S Corey Moore 2 PBU; CB Devin Bowman 1 int.
  • Richt on RBs: “I thought (Crowell and Samuel) ran very well. They did have more space than the other two guys by a long shot. But there were times there was nothing there and they knocked the pile back. . . . Their running styles are very different. Richard is power and speed; Isaiah has got quickness and change of direction. He’s got a burst of speed and does a good job of breaking tackles and getting yards after contact. Both have good balance.
  • Richt overall: “I still don’t know what we have yet. I do feel better about how we’ll be able to run the football.”
  • John Jenkins working with both 1s and 2s, but mostly No. 2.
  • No significant injuries. CB Brandon Boykin (hamstring) and OLB Cornelius Washington “very close” to coming back.
  • Richt on Jarvis Jones news yesterday: “I was the one that got to walk into the defensive staff meeting and tell them about it. There was a pretty good celebration in there.
  • Richt on Crowell’s blocking ability: “In general he’s picking it up at a good pace. I’m not worried that he doesn’t understand. He’s certainly eager to show he can do it. Sometimes a back doesn’t want to do it; sometimes he can’t do it; sometimes he’s scared to do it. None of those apply to him.”
  • Richt on Ogletree: “The guy that’s making the most plays is ‘Tree.’ He’s in a position where he’s supposed to be. If they run away from Jarvis there’s nothing he can do about it. But Tree is in there where he can run to either side and, if I had to point out one guy on defense it’d be Tree. He’s having a great camp.”
  • Richt on safeties: “Shawn Williams has been very impressive. . . . He’s bigger, stronger, faster, tougher and more mature and he’s doing it the right way.”
  • Richt on Corey Moore: “Corey’s going to be a good player. It’s indecision that can get you at that position but he’s really coming on.”
  • Richt: “Michael Bennett has had a really good camp. If I had to pick a top three (receivers), I’d say TK, Marlon and Michael. Malcolm Mitchell just has a lot to learn. Rantavious Wooten is ready to play and do things the Georgia way.”
  • Richt on Aaron Murray: “aaron had a good day but not a great day. couple of times he had a guy he should’ve hit or could’ve hit. . . . If it was a year ago I’d have said it was a pretty good day for a freshman. But he’s a sophomore now, so it could have been better.”
  • The No. 1 offense scored every time during red zone drill.

how can mitchell, charles and king not register any receving stats? also, why not practice 1v1 instead of 1’s vs 2’s. how much better can our #1 DLine get by scrimaging against the #2 OLine. We barely have a first team OLine.

Samuel putting the ball on the ground is the reason many a Techies still consider themselves the greatest team on earth after their sloppy win in Athens 3 long years ago.

Samuel and Crowell’s stats look good, but I agree with jb. We need to have 1vs1. I know that injury is a huge risk this early on in practice and this is the first scrimage, but lets see if our OL can move the mtns up front with our big DL.

Saw Richt’s comments. He is reserving judgement until he sees more but I believe he is liking what he saw. Commented about the big holes to run through and how it is 2 different running styles with IC and RS.

SouthGaBrave

jb,

Georgia only releases partial stats of scrimmages, not the complete stats. If you add up the completions from the QBs, there were 16. If you add the receptions of the receivers listed, those total 11. There were at least 5 other catches (unless a few walk-on QBs also played, but weren’t listed) spread amongst some of the receivers. Don’t freak out about scrimmage stats.

And the reasons the 1’s are going against the 2’s on both sides is because of the depth. The 1’s go against the 1’s during plenty of drills during practice. We want our best 11 on both sides of the ball on September 3rd. The more you go 1’s vs. 1’s during scrimmages, the higher the chances of injuries. Richt knows this.

JB

Most teams, college and NFL practice #1s vs #2s, especially early in camp. Is the the #2 defense perhaps slower? Yes, but right now they just want the 1Off to develope timing and rhythm. I do understand the need to be challenged daily….so I see your concern. Remember, UGA has dept on defense, I dont imagine there is a significant drop off from D1 to D2. If you recall, John Jenkins was on D2 the first week back, and may still be there now.

this discussion about 1’s vs. 1’s going at it in practice is a really interesting–and useful–topic. I think to former USC trojan Pete Carroll and his coaching philosophy of letting 1’s practice against each other virtually every practice. I remember watching an interview where he emphasized about how the competition is always with the player to stretch and fully maximize his potential by physically competing against the best. I’m sure the coaches have their own reasons and philosophies to work from, but i really like how pete carroll ran the ‘football culture’ at USC.

UGA gave GT the 08 game in Athens. Samuel did fumble and GT scored soon after or right then, and Stafford threw a TD pic. That is game of football.

Over the last two years, UGA simply just out fought GT and that was good to view, knowing that UGA had two of the worst years in 20-25 years vs GT having for them a fair year in 08, 09. 2010 that hit their usual historic stride. 5-7?? Weedeater Bowl???
The year that GT DID finally defeat UGA, they won nothing beyond that fluke game and have nada to show for it. Nada. Goose eggs, zilch. Nothing.

A lot of areas UGA has to address – again – this team needs some games under it’s belt to jell.

Still think this team has potential to become a monster by end of the season.

However, and unfortunately, playing Boise and USCe right off the bat is a double edge sword:
1. The good news is that it get’s your teams attention and focus – this will make you a better team.
2. The bad – UGA has way too many areas to address and new personnel to come out mid-season form.

With 7 returning starters on Offense – including Kellen Moore – and sever returning defensive startes -including a very good – athletic D-Line – I think Boise will win this game. I got a feeling UGA’s offense will struggle during this game – and that will be the difference between our two teams.

Vince Dooley – His “remedial studies” fraud was exposed by Jan Kemp, bring shame and disgrace on himself and the University.

Ray Goff – a complete idiot, believed to share DNA with Mike Bobo. Enough said.

Jim Donnan – Operated one the biggest Ponzi scams in US history, defrauding investors of millions of dollars.

Mark Richt – Arguably the sleaziest of the four, with his recruiting and coddling of low class punks who read and write at grade school level.

There’s only 9 total yards worth of receiving missing from the stats. QB’s threw for a total of 176 yds. The receiving stats listed account for 167 yards. The coaches did not leave out to much in these stats. My point on the OL/DL is that the #2OL is essentially a scout team OL. During USC’s hey day in the early 2000’s, Pete Carrol was notorious for 1’s v 1’s. I’m not advocating continually scrimaging the 1’s v 1’s. I’d think during the first preseason scrimage or two you could stand a little 1’s vs 1’s. Injuries usually happen because someone plants their foot wrong or gets clipped from behind in a pile up, not from the best two athletes at opposing positions lining up and going at it for 45-60 minutes. This team has been very soft the last few years and dropped games in 4th qtr. One way to get past that is to make every drill operate at the highest level of competition. Crowell needs to run against the big boys and Samuels needs to learn to protect the football against the big boys. Just my opinion.

AltamahaDawg

Samuel got 7.45 ypc. Have to see what that fumble was all about, but the guy hasn’t been practising trying to hang on to the rock for the past 2 yrs, so he’s got som time to tighten that up.

Good numbers for first group. No mention of freshman other than Crowell. But still freshman should not have over 50 yards against second group on defense. Depth could be an issue. good practice. I think we are going to be to much for Boise St. I knew last year was going to be rough but if we do good against Boise on the first drive whether it is on offense or defense we will have momentum and i think it will be just like the last beatdown. If we limit turnovers we should get at least 9 wins maybe ten. I think we will just our run them B. Smith will get a lot of looks on O and i think we will turn it into a track meet. Boise is not use to guys like Samuels running the ball. At his weight and speed he is a load to tackle for four quarters throw Crowell and Smith in there as jitterbugs it will be tough on them. Most backs they face are at 190-210 running 4.55-4.60 Samuels has 30-50 pounds on those guys with 4.48-4.52 speed they do not have the depth at linebackers to play against that. His body has filled out remember he was 17 starting in the SEC and he was big then now he has that man strength and has kept his speed he could be a surprise that no one is talking about. I have heard out of camp no one wants any part of him during practice he hits a ton. I said Cory Moore is one of those guys you cant keep off the field i see him making the special teams and filling in at safety this season. I knew some kids at the Army All American game he was at. He was by far the hardest hitter out there and once the kids figured that out everyone got gator arms. He will bring back that tough safety we have not had in a few years if he does not grow out of his position i could see him getting moved to LB like Tree bc he will probably end up being 230-240 thats to big for safety. He will be a stud for us all those Griffin High boys end up in the NFL most of them just end up at small colleges due to grades but they all make to the league. Like Bobby Rainey (great RB out of Griffin at Western Kentucky one of the best RB no one knows about google him he was second in NCAA in rushing behind the Oregon RB and Second in yards from scrimmage behind Newton. All Griffin high boys can flat out play. Dawgs are gonna surprise some people as long as no major injuries happen.

I-DOG

Logical Us:

UGA does indeed have depth issues at OL and ILB. However,to say that the Dawgs have no second level backup is absolutely false.

Great depth at DL all the way accross. Great depth in the secondary particuarly at CB and some of the safety depth is young, but I don’t think depth is a real problem there. Now that Jones will play, pretty good depth at OLB especially if Ray Drew plays well as a freshman. Good depth at QB and at WR.

To say that there is “no second level backup” isn’t accurate. To say that the depth at OL is scary and that at ILB it is a little thin would be accurate.

Altamaha,

my mistake regarding the ‘07 and ‘08 teams’ stats. As for scoring in the red zone, i was more referrring to the team’s lack of TDs the past couple of years, rather than actual points from field goals.

in re-reading the article, it looks like a safe bet that the red zone scoring was on account of field goals and not TDs, which suggests some of the same stats may be forthcoming this year. not as impressed now.

Just love the comments from people who make their living sitting behind a desk and computer all day. It was a scrimmage, no one knows exactly what went on. Most of you act like Chip is reporting what he saw. Nope, he is reporting what he was told. This was the first scrimmage. Also, most scrimmages in the beginning are situational, ways to see how players react to going full speed.

If you have ever participated in a football scrimmage past the high school level you would know how they operate.

Relax folks! There is a reason this is private. Richt releases what he wants released. If he really thought there was a serious problem, he wouldn’t bring it up. Running with the 1st team vs 2nd and vice versa reveals a lot about a back. He will see them all in various matchups. Don’t worry about the receiving corps. Remember, they release the info they want to release. The fact that all four RBs got the number of carries they did tells me it is a wide open contest. It also sounds like the running game was the focus today. Think about it. It is time for Richt to be forming his game plan–he is already into tactics. Just read this kind of stuff with a grain of salt–the positives are no injuries and Richt saying he feels good about the running game.

If you have any money in your pocket, go with UGA vs Boise St. Not trying to play homer but here is why. In the first game of the season, no team is in sync or in mid-season form. A certain rhythm and continuity will not be present. Boise St. appears to be returning the same amount of lettermen as UGA is, if not less. They even have a new OC. If you remember the VT game, Boise got off to a fast start because of turnovers but once VT got it’s bearings, they took Boise to the wire. Clearly, Boise benefited from having a big lead early in the 1st qt. Everyone knows that the ACC does not have the fastest or the biggest players. Heck, for that matter, as physical as VT plays, they do not have huge personnel at any roster spot and very little speed across the board. They win but don’t dominate teams (sounds like UGA). Let’s not even talk about that choke job out in Oklahoma. They always choke at some point. TCU was ripe for the picking 2 years ago, but they were just too physical for Boise. In the first 3 weeks of the season, the team that can dominate physically will usually win. Coaching and adjustments come into play later in the season.

One other point: Malcome is big and tough and last year’s 1s spoke about how hard he was to tackle. He also broke some nice tackles on GDay. If he was getting stuffed like that by our #1 D, that tells me they could be a very tough group, indeed. Assuming his groin was OK, this might be the best news of the day. We’ll see.

(Not that some skill players can’t help out over there) And I don’t think the reason it was 1 VS 2 today was because the back-ups were wearing a blue arm band. Today I would think it was to try to narrow down who was who.

We have holes to fill and a lot of freshman and first year players are going to have to step up. A key stat that is left out is how much playing time the players actually got. We all know that orson charles is a great player as do the coaches and will be contending for all-american honors so why fret over a proven player not getting catches in a scrimmage. We need to figure out who our other play makers are going to be, so naturally they are probably going to get looks more often in scrimmages. No need to get worked up over the first scrimmage. 2. Samuel continues to fumble.

3. Richt appears to be trying to help Murray’s numbers by keeping Murray away from competition, like going vs. the #2 defense

4. What happened to Malcome? TK? Charles? Bennett? Mitchell? Guess it pays to not accept the UGA hype machine coming from Mark Richt and wait until the kids get on the field. Apparently, Murray continue to struggle getting down timing with his receivers.

Starting line ups will change from week to week according to who does well in practice and who doesn’t, who is banged up and who is healthy, and etc. A new kid that does really well may find himself starting while a veteran starter can be bumped back to second string. Lex, will take the second of your 2 scenarios, just dont see it with this team. You might be right, but not sold on Murray like everyone else. Until he proves he can win a big game in the 4th qtr like David Green, all of this b.s is worthless. Orson charles disappears just like murray in the big games. couple that with the fact the defense was the worst in the sec against 3rd down conversions, and today they had no stops(ZERO) in the red zone, sorry, but that is where games are won and lost, 3rd downs, and inside the red zone, this team has proven it can do neither. No q.b. play late in games, and no stops on 3rd down and in red zone=disaster. We will see.

B1Bomber- You are not considering the running game in the scrimage. Aaron Murray doesnt have to throw TD’s when the RB’s are carrying the load and scoring on every Red Zone attempt. I dont think at this point, anyone (even CMR) knows if we have a great running game or just defense adjustment problems at this point. Two more scrimmages down the road will start shedding light on if the O or D is more dominant.

Charlie Hayes

It is the same every year in Jacksonville, the dogs come in talking smack about what they are going to do and leave crying and making excuses about what happened on the field. C.Robinson needs to stfu and start making plays. Leaders lead by example and this guy was the 4th best l.b. on the team last year. He hasn’t made a big play his whole career so far. If this is all UGA has on defense as it relates to leadership, this team is in big trouble. The young freshman Herrera sorry about spelling will be twice the player Robinson is, but i’m afraid the Richt favoritism will not reward him for his efforts. This is why UGA has suffered so much the past 3 years under Richt, plays favorites, doesn’t play best players. It may also happen with Murray, just as it happened to Murray when Cox was a 5th year sr. Believe me, opposing coaches use this against UGA all the time and Richt has figured this out yet. We will see.

Faithful you are a typical idiot UGA fan and you obviously can’t read either. I said Murray could be another example of Richt’s favoritism, just like he was a victim of it when he was a Redshirt freshman and Richt handed the job to a 5th yr. senior Cox who he said deserved to start because he had been waiting his turn for 4 years. You are such a big man to call people names on blogs. But Murray has done nothing so far as it relates to winning a big game, so he is all-sec preseason, doesn’t mean a damn thing. Plus he has never won a big game like Garcia has at S.C., and the only reason he is 1st team preseason sec is because most people didn’t even know if Garcia would still be on team. Let me ask you this you big mouth cyber bully, has Murray beaten Florida, or Bama? The answer is no, Garcia beat Fl, Bama, and UGA last year. So go chew on that and come back when you have facts instead of insults

“Malcolm Mitchell just has a lot to learn.” Well it appears that he is athletic enough to run circles around the boys we have on the field due to the coaches quotes and articles written on here. I take this quote as a slight against Mitchell, and maybe I’m wrong, but it’s comments like this that allow me to believe we won’t be necessarily putting the best players on the field yet again. We all know Crowell needs to be on the field at the start of the Boise State game. We all know Mitchell and Nick Marshall need to be somewhere as well when the ball is kicked off in the Dome. These guys didn’t pledge their collegiate lives to Georgia to sit the bench. They have what it takes, because the coaches said so, and I just don’t understand why we don’t work an offense around their knowledge of the playbook and to take advantage of their skill sets. It is very early, and I understand that, but comments like that just don’t instill a lot of trust that these blue chippers will get to show us why they were ranked so high and recruited by schools all over the country.

UGA’s Dream Team needs to adopt 1992 Michigan Fab Five’s motivation song by Onyx titled “Slam.” Maybe the Dream Team will all be starting by game 4 as true freshmen and first year UGA players with the exception of Christian LeMay – as he backs super returning starter sophomore Aaron Murray. Maybe Jay Rome, Malcolm Mitchell, Isaiah Crowell, John Jenkins, Damian Swann, Devin Bowman, Jarvis Jones, and Watts Dantzler can have the same impact as Michigan’s Fab 5 – Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Ray Jackson, and Jimmy King! It will be awesome if they do! The Fab Five was incredible! I witnessed their performance some 20 years ago or so! Hopefully, the Dream Team will be just as dominant! They need to fight for that same mental attitude that took Webber, Rose and Co. to such lofty heights! If they achieve that, watch out! Malcolm Mitchell had 77 catches last year with Valdosta. I believe the sky is the limit for these guys!

@Altamaha Dawg……..You sir, can speak for this DOG anytime you want……most intelligent posts on this site………….So now that I’m letting folks speak for me, I’ll point out the fact that I read all of the first page posts, and skimmed the last…………coachMilesSabanMuschamp pointed out how, basic lack of thought runs deep in this blog………Tobias Funke is dead on…..Faloughi is a beast and is just getting going now…….and jaglaw seems to know alot about football practice, and what the point of a scrimmage is all about……..And last but not least………….Covington Dawg……observed by basically saying…….” Why in the world do you want to tell Boise St. or South Carolina for that matter whats going on?”……………..Yup, I’ve rounded up a pretty damn good group of DOGS………to be my spokesmen………come on haters, I dare ya……..not only will you be taking me on………but the very core of DOG NATION on this blog…………Thanks guys, great read tonight!………….Your pal, RED

Ray Drew did not make much noise in the scrimmage…..Maybe he was injured………or maybe a microphone wasn’t present.

UGA fans and writers please get a clue, MURRAY is not your answer!!!! LeMay chose Georgia and his time isn’t two years from now but it’s this season. He will be the reason the dawgs make it back into the top 10. I hope Richt and Bobo open there eyes, their job depends on it. UGA looses first two games, coaches put LeMay in to finish the season. Take that to the bank!

Thanks for giving Tech the game in ‘08. Typical hubris. Has Tech ever beaten UGA fairly ? I guess not.

Sounds like another preseason national championship to me. The best days of a UGA fan are the 6 weeks before the season starts. Can we say ” playing with ourselves” ?

Still questioning Murray’s ability to throw over the middle off the play action. I didn’t see Orson Charles with a reception…

@oldguy………No disrespect my friend, but I’m pretty old myself, used to play the game, and I know dadgum good and well coach Richt and the other coaches are simply not going to show their hand in some pre-season scrimmage [and the first one at that]………I’ve been reading posts grumbling about fantacies that make no sense whatsoever. I’m not trying to give you a hard time, after all we are both “Sr. citizens”………But remember oldguy, most of what you read about scrimmages, stats, etc. are simply a little old fashion P.R. to keep the masses happy. I do believe however, some of the players remarks, though scripted, are probubly pretty dead-on……..as far as Murray’s ability to get a pass across the middle, I’m not worried in the least. Aaron Murray is in his third year playing in this system, no more A.J. Green to key on, getting his footwork in, has to be light years ahead of his progressions from last year………..To me? if “my” BULLDOGS can continue to gel with the chemistry that seems to be in place……….All will be well in DOG LAND in……….Oh my gosh!!!!…………Three weeks from this Saturday night……..College football is a game of cycles. Florida, Texas, Southern Cal., Tenn., Auburn ect………are all cycling down. Florida St., Texas A.M., South Carolina, Notre Dame, Stanford, and The University of Georgia BULLDOGS are cycling up…………….Regards, RED
