Practice update: Crowell, Samuel, Herrera star in Georgia’s first scrimmage
1:19 pm August 10, 2011, by Chip Towers
ATHENS – OK, here’s a raw rundown of the Georgia Bulldogs’ first scrimmage of preseason, conducted Wedneday at Sanford Stadium. . . .
- Isaiah Crowell had 13 carries for 84 yards and a touchdown with a long run of 15 yards.
- Richard Samuel had 11 carries for 82 yards with a long run of 33 yards. However, Samuel fumbled once and Amarlo Herrerra scooped it up and returned it 65 yards for a TD.
- Ken Malcome had 12 carries for 19 yards with a long run of eight yards.
- Carlton Thomas had eight carries for 21 yards with a long run of six.
- “It was evident who was working with the No. 1 unit and who was going against the No. 2 defense,” coach Mark Richt said. “It was rougher going for the 2 offense.”
- Quarterback Aaron Murray was 9-of-15 for 100 yards with no TDs or interceptions. Hutson Mason was 5-of-19 for 59 with a TD and Christian LeMay was 2-of-4 for 17 yards with the No. 3 offense.
- Receiving: Aron White 3-47 (32); Samuel 3-32 (14); Marlon Brown 2-46 (35); Jay Rome 2-22 (12), Bradberry 1-20 (TD)
- PK Blair Walsh was 7-of-8 on field goals with a long of 58. Yes, 58!
- PK Brandon Bogotay made a 68-yarder in warmups. Yes, 68!
- Richt really impressed with inside linebacker Alec Ogletree. “Tree,” as everybody calls him, had scrimmage best eight tackles.
- Other defense: LB Mike Gilliard 4/7 (unassisted/total), LB Herrera 3/7, OLB Jarvis Jones 4/6, DE Abry Jones 4/5 with sack, PBU; LB Ramik Wilson 2 sacks, 1 TFL; LB Christian Robinson 2 TFL, 1 sack; OLB Reuben Faloughi 2 sacks; S Corey Moore 2 PBU; CB Devin Bowman 1 int.
- Richt on RBs: “I thought (Crowell and Samuel) ran very well. They did have more space than the other two guys by a long shot. But there were times there was nothing there and they knocked the pile back. . . . Their running styles are very different. Richard is power and speed; Isaiah has got quickness and change of direction. He’s got a burst of speed and does a good job of breaking tackles and getting yards after contact. Both have good balance.
- Richt overall: “I still don’t know what we have yet. I do feel better about how we’ll be able to run the football.”
- John Jenkins working with both 1s and 2s, but mostly No. 2.
- No significant injuries. CB Brandon Boykin (hamstring) and OLB Cornelius Washington “very close” to coming back.
- Richt on Jarvis Jones news yesterday: “I was the one that got to walk into the defensive staff meeting and tell them about it. There was a pretty good celebration in there.
- Richt on Crowell’s blocking ability: “In general he’s picking it up at a good pace. I’m not worried that he doesn’t understand. He’s certainly eager to show he can do it. Sometimes a back doesn’t want to do it; sometimes he can’t do it; sometimes he’s scared to do it. None of those apply to him.”
- Richt on Ogletree: “The guy that’s making the most plays is ‘Tree.’ He’s in a position where he’s supposed to be. If they run away from Jarvis there’s nothing he can do about it. But Tree is in there where he can run to either side and, if I had to point out one guy on defense it’d be Tree. He’s having a great camp.”
- Richt on safeties: “Shawn Williams has been very impressive. . . . He’s bigger, stronger, faster, tougher and more mature and he’s doing it the right way.”
- Richt on Corey Moore: “Corey’s going to be a good player. It’s indecision that can get you at that position but he’s really coming on.”
- Richt: “Michael Bennett has had a really good camp. If I had to pick a top three (receivers), I’d say TK, Marlon and Michael. Malcolm Mitchell just has a lot to learn. Rantavious Wooten is ready to play and do things the Georgia way.”
- Richt on Aaron Murray: “aaron had a good day but not a great day. couple of times he had a guy he should’ve hit or could’ve hit. . . . If it was a year ago I’d have said it was a pretty good day for a freshman. But he’s a sophomore now, so it could have been better.”
- The No. 1 offense scored every time during red zone drill.

It should be totally obvious that Saint Simons has crawled out from under his rock, sported a new name and will be in full trash talking mode until such time as the Dawgs once again destroy Georgia Tech and Saint B1 crawls back into his hole for another 9 months!

Lex, will take the second of your 2 scenarios, just dont see it with this team. You might be right, but not sold on Murray like everyone else. Until he proves he can win a big game in the 4th qtr like David Green, all of this b.s is worthless. Orson charles disappears just like murray in the big games. couple that with the fact the defense was the worst in the sec against 3rd down conversions, and today they had no stops(ZERO) in the red zone, sorry, but that is where games are won and lost, 3rd downs, and inside the red zone, this team has proven it can do neither. No q.b. play late in games, and no stops on 3rd down and in red zone=disaster. We will see.

DEAR KOOL AIDE UGA KLUB:
NONE OF YOUR #1 RECEIVERS, KING, BENNETT, CHARLES, SCORED OR PUT UP DECENT NUMBERS.
YOUR #1 RB DID NOT SCORE EITHER.
YOUR #1 QB DID NOT SCORE.
EVERYTHING’S JUST ROSY!!!

B1Bomber- You are not considering the running game in the scrimage. Aaron Murray doesnt have to throw TD’s when the RB’s are carrying the load and scoring on every Red Zone attempt. I dont think at this point, anyone (even CMR) knows if we have a great running game or just defense adjustment problems at this point. Two more scrimmages down the road will start shedding light on if the O or D is more dominant.

Also, they dont count the TD’s in the overall numbers while in the red zone scrimage. Only the TD’s from the full field scrimmage are counted….This is why you dont think Samuel had a TD.

you are wasting time typing to that moron.
He comes on these blogs EVERYDAY under a different name.
He will never answer you directly as to who his team is. Only bashes UGA at any evidence of anything bad.
This is why we desperately need registration under one blog name with one e-mail address from one IP address.

dogs always look good in scrimmage, just not on the field. Be ready for your blowout loss to Boise and S Carolina to start your year and don’t even dream of recieving any mercy in Jacksonville. There are pictures of your coach threatening to choke our kicker up in the locker room already, there will be no mercy to give. Murray won’t finish the game, I see a Fairley incident coming and Crowell is going to get treated like Spikes treated Moreno in 2008. In the ground, all day

I can see the network of blog troll geeks has been unleashed again. These people are truly creepy,
spending all day on and off of a sports blog showing the world how sad and alone they are. Tell me gents, how many touchdowns have you ever scored for UF or even gained a yard or kicked a freaking fieldgoal for this team you hang all your pride and confidence in in life. I like the dogs but I don’t sit on the computer trashing people all day. Truly Pathetic.

Aron White continues to impress. Kid catches every ball thrown to him. I charted him last year, and Charles had a 54% catch rate, and Aron White’s was over 80%. Nice day for White, I’d like to see him take over the #1 TE position. Charles only scored 2 td’s all of last season.

It is the same every year in Jacksonville, the dogs come in talking smack about what they are going to do and leave crying and making excuses about what happened on the field. It will be no different this year, your QB is overated, Crowell won’t average 3 a carry and will come nowhere near 1000 for the year, Greene is gone, and you only scored 3 on C Florida with him. Tough year for dogs, I can’t wait to mock you as you leave Jacksonville in October

Richard Samuel 7.5 Avg and 33 yard long for 82 yards is overshadowed by a fumble, get real people! Samuel and Crowell are a great pair. I still would like to see an old T formation with Figgins, Crowell, and Samuel in the backfield with King split wide and Charles at the other end.

This makes no sense you freaking know nothing tard. Crowell and Mason would never be on the field at the same time considering crowell ran with the 1’s and mason is the 2nd team qb. Good try though you low life.

Evidence is building that if UGA played UF in Georgia every single year and had an off date 90% of the time before the game, the record of this series would probably be alot more balanced.

If Uga scored every time they were in the Red Zone, who else, besides Crowell, scored? And the 20 yd. TD pass doen’t count as a red zone score.

Also, if Falougi, Vasser, and Stripling continue to develop at OLB, any thoughts of moving Cornelious Washington to Defensive End, his original position in the 4-3. Is 270 – 275 lb. big enough? If so, with his atleticism, he’d be a beast coming off the edge.

C.Robinson needs to stfu and start making plays. Leaders lead by example and this guy was the 4th best l.b. on the team last year. He hasn’t made a big play his whole career so far. If this is all UGA has on defense as it relates to leadership, this team is in big trouble. The young freshman Herrera sorry about spelling will be twice the player Robinson is, but i’m afraid the Richt favoritism will not reward him for his efforts. This is why UGA has suffered so much the past 3 years under Richt, plays favorites, doesn’t play best players. It may also happen with Murray, just as it happened to Murray when Cox was a 5th year sr. Believe me, opposing coaches use this against UGA all the time and Richt has figured this out yet. We will see.
