UGA practice update: Defense wins day on first day of full contact

ATHENS — A quick post-practice update. . . .

  • S Shawn Williams on first day of full contact: “All I know is Branden Smith came up and hit somebody so hard he knocked their helmet off.”
  • DE DeAngelo Tyson said Isaiah Crowell so quick and shifty that nobody got a good shot on him today.
  • CB Branden Smith confirms he’ll be returning punts again, or at least intends to. “There’s competition there. Me, Boykin, TK and some freshmen. But I’m not going to make it easy for them.”
  • B. Smith on sharing No. 1 with Crowell: “Me and Isaiah are both all right with No. 1. He plays offense and I play defense so it’s not a problem. If they asked me to I’d wear another number if they needed us together on offense. . . . The number doesn’t make me. I make the number.”
  • Injuries: TB Brandon Harton out with “mild concussion.” Will return later this week “hopefully,” Richt says. . . . CB Chris Sanders held out of contact due to bruised shoulder suffered yesterday. . . . Boykin and Jakar Hamilton still out with hamstring pulls. “Usually 7-10 days,” Richt says. Going on six days tomorrow.
  • Lot of talk about “energy vampires.” See blog later.
  • Sophomore Chase Vasser solid No. 2 at SAM (strongside) outside linebacker. This means he’d start if Jarvis Jones unable to go in Game 1. T.J. Stripling and freshman Ramik Wilson also getting work there.
  • Vasser into theater, acting, movies and modeling. Looks the part of action hero.
  • LB Michael Gilliard having phenomenal camp, per Richt and others. Busted lip in 3-on-3 drill today. “Mike’s one of the guys who has flipped the switch, so to speak. He’s decided he’s going to do it the Georgia way and he’s doing it well.”
  • CMR gives more love to Damian Swann and Malcolm Mitchell. Go ahead and put them in the “definitely will play” category along with Crowell, Ray Drew.
  • CMR said Crowell “really good at running behind his pads.”
  • Defense “won the day” in very close competition. Coaches keep score every day using points system. Was 17-17 going into last four or five plays of days. Then No. 3 D whipped up on No. 3 O.
  • Freshmen thrilled about “first chance to get to wear Silver Britches,” Richt said.
  • Richard Samuel and Crowell both running with No. 1 offense.
  • Richt says Samuel “trucked” freshman safety yesterday. “He’s a locomotive when he gets up a head of steam. . . . Crowell faster getting around the end.”
  • Richt said only injury was a “mildly sprained ankle” but could not recall who.

Hearing how fast Crowell is coming from the D makes me think he may not have the curse of Shanks or CK. Long as he keeps the hard work up on the field and in the class room he should be fine.

Folks, don’t forget Samuel was only16 back when he early enrolled in ‘08! He was very young in his 08 and 09 RB seasons. He didn’t look like a star to me, but a lot can happen in three years. He is big and strong and fast. Spending a year as a LB means he has zero fear of LBs, and probably relishes a collision with a DB. I have changed my mind and I’m thinking he could be very productive this year. Opposing DCs have to keep the RB avg below 3.3 yds, and that is going to be hard to do with Figgins/Samuel coming at you. Also, I think Crowell was a sprinter, if I remember correctly, so he has good speed at a minimum. I especially like what I heard from Richt and Tyson: he is shifty and we can’t get a clean hit on him, and he is great at running behind his pads. Btw, maybe he could have set a world record if he cut his locks? The aerodynamic drag is significant, I suspect.

Can’t wait ’till kick-off. I want to see Samuel truck a BSU LB up the middle to keep ‘em honest and then let IC bring it on home around the corner. Sounds like Branden Smith got Thomas Davis’ message loud and clear–make ‘em hurt to get up after the tackle. First snap Kellen Moore takes needs to be the first play he see the turf, period. If we play BSU at the physical level we need to play SCar at, we win by more than a touchdown… And then take that mindset back between the hedges to line-up against the chickens. I know “everyone is a NC in August,” but I can’t help but like what I hear from the players–team focus, hard working, and a hungry attitude (i.e. “we want a ring” comment from Christian Robinson, I believe, a few days ago). Excited and optimistic about this season for sure, but want to see proof. Can’t wait. GATA Go Dawgs!!

I am also tired of us being the laughing stock when we get to Sept/Oct and Nov. It says something when your known for “winning championships in Aug” That all said, I do expect great things this year- primarily due to the schedule and the fact we really were close last year- we were within a score in the 4th qtr of each game we lost. Not that far off….

As AltamahaDawg has “asked” me, why does last season’s results have anything to do with this season’s expectations?

I still have little confidence in Bobo. When he leads us to at least a SEC East title, I will change my mind. But there is no reason that this team, in a down year in the East, can’t contend.

I just want to see some PASSION this season. Passion from the players and the coaches. Mark Richt needs to show passion when we do something right or wrong….also let Grantham use his style of up in your face coaching with these boys. They won’t screw it up then.

The last 3 or 4 years it’s been all about one or two players that UGA thought they could count on. It never was a “TEAM”. Everyone thought Stafford & Moreno could save the team. Didn’t happen. Everyone looked to A.J. to win games for us. We never had that “win as a team” mentality. I think we have that now.

2nd year under Grantham’s defense…new S & C program…best special teams unit in the country…new hunger & attitude…one of the easiest schedules in years…best QB in the SEC…Samuel & Crowell toting the rock…better personnel on defense…etc, etc.

Guys you don’t do a toss sweep with a 500+lb fb/tb combo. That is a freight train that runs north south. Plus getting outside the tackles against boise plays into the speed of their d-line’s hands. Line up and knock the guy in front of you down and then move onto the next level of defenders and try knock them into next week. Toss sweeps will work with someone like CT or IC, guys that can get the edge or make the cut up field. If we try and finesse or do anything other than over-power a smaller team like Boise, then we will be in for a long, long season.

WOW!! First time in many years that UGA will have 3 or 4 legit corners to counter the spread offenses they will face in the SEC. With Smith finally becoming the 5 star athlete he is, and Boykin, Marshall, and Swain, this will be the most talented group of corners UGA has had. Marshall is a true stud, could probably play q.b. for alot of spread offenses in the SEC. If Grantham can’t put pressure on opposing Q.B’s with this group of shutdown corners then he isn’t what everybody thought he would be. He has the size and talent in the front 7 to bring pressure, so we will see.

Things I would like to see against Boise. Power I over and over. Beat’em up with the run game and then go play action. Start Samuel and bring in Boo if he’s healthy, then spring Crowell on’em. Start Figgins and Lynch and then bring in White or Charles. Split out some TEs. Boise doesn’t play that many teams that even use TEs so UGA should throw three or four at them. No trick plays, no fancy stuff, just good old fashion headknocking. On D they might try some 4-2-5. I hear some of those new D backs can play. Use Ray Drew as a DE with his hand on the ground. He already knows how to do that.

P_The_Ricker

August 8th, 2011
5:10 pm

Ah, pre-season……all of this crowing by UGA and FL fans about their offenses.

UGA fans cannot say w/ any certainty of how good their offense will be this year. UGA has what looks to be a pretty good QB, but there are questions everywhere else on offense, save TE. Could the offense be good, sure….but it could result in a lot of 3 and outs on account of a suspect offensive line and ability of their WRs to create space. Aside from King, no WR has proven he can consistently create space in the defensive backfield.

UF fans have to know that their offense will be a work in progress. muschamp wants a power running back….which UF doesn’t have and weiss wants a drop-back passer….which UF may have the most questionable offensive line in the league. schemes may sound great on paper, but w/out the proper personnel, you’re looking at a potential disaster. expect some kind of hybrid offense that will vary from game to game.

SC is SC. the division is their’s for the taking, but I personally can’t see the day that SC will ever win back to back division crowns.

Can’t give TN, KY or Vandy any real consideration for this year.

the good money is that either UGA or UF will figure things out enough on offense, but it will be their defenses that actually carry them to the division crown. going to give the slight edge to UGA, on account that they may have the best kicker, punter, kick returner combination in the country.

Nice that Crowell is fast around the ends. Would like to hear how strong he is up the middle or that he ran through a couple of linebackers. Of course if I were a freshman and had just seen a couple of helmets go flashing by I would probably stick with running around the ends as well. Sounds like the D is improved from a scheme standpoint and appears to be more physical aka SEC style.

Jenkins and Geathers will stuff Lattimore this year and Garcia will be flagged for D.U.I. by halftime. It’s a new dawn at the UGA. College football fortunes change with every incoming class and UGA is loaded this year. I agree with some of you that 2012 will be great but 2011 will turn some heads. Boise will bring speed sure enough and we will slobberknock that speed and turn it to fear!

Dude, Boise is not going to beat us. I don’t care what you say. They have a new OC…. lost their top 2 WR’s… have an anorexic O-line and D-line…etc. We are bigger, faster, stronger, deeper and just better than Boise. Plus we have the driving factor and that’s hunger…attitude. No way we let Boise come to our house (virtually a home game for UGA) and beat us in front of our fans.

What is it with hamstring pulls? We have more hammeys than all the rest of the SEC combined. Just ask all the college coaches that require their players to do a swimming regiment in the off season. Those teams don’t have hamstring problems. Longer, leaner and stronger muscles to fight this season crippling injury.

To the dawg fans that keep speaking of what 2012 may bring,

do you guys remember 2008? everyone was projecting that 2008 was going to be a special year, when in fact 2007 was the banner year of that group of dawgs (moreno, stafford, massaqois, jones, etc).

just saying, don’t start getting all wide-eyed about a season when there’s so many unknowns.

R. Samuel has always been a good rb. He had a couple of bad fumbles. Who has not fumbled at ga the last few years?. OMG it has been awful seeing all the fumbles in important game the last few years. . R Samuel is the man. I am excited to hear about Crowell doing well. I do not see him in passing situations to much to start the season. Teams are going to know this also. So they will be expecting Crowell to run when he is in the game. I am still hoping Malcome gets healthy. He is my sleeper. I like his attitude. Brandon Smith is having a heck of a preseason. HE WILL BE TESTED IN THE 1ST GAME. SO WE WILL SEE. I am loving the ‘Georgia Way Theme’. It basically means shape up or ship out. This needed to be done 4 years ago. I hope it is not 2 late for our Coach. Gooooo DAWGS!!!

We are the new Carolina? Sounds good to me, hell been listening to the fanbase crow after getting smoked in the last two games last season and looks like they are playing for the National Title this year. They have already played the season. They are the ones who are going to have some serious back peddling to do in a couple of weeks. My guess is all these Carolina fans will then turn into UT fans, then magically become MSU fans then gravitate to Auburn fans. Same rhetoric, different handles. All it means is its great to be a Bulldog!

can you question the point i brought up? following the ‘06 season and during the summer of ‘07, most dawg fans were pointing towards ‘08 as a championship-type season. i don’t think i have to remind you about all of the hype during the summer of ‘08.

i can’t help but notice how many dawg fans are already talking about 2012. good grief!

I beleive yo will not see a lot of safeties and CB’s for UGA having to mae any plays on runners this year. With the front 7, UGA has in place, there is not going to be a lot of room for RB’s to operate in, and that includes Lattimore. I don’t care how good you are, when faced with a man in front of you that out weights you by 80-100 pounds and is quick and can get in your way, you are going to face a problem. If you are lucky enough to get around the DL’s, then you have to face some very fast, and good sized LB’s, that I don’t think you can intimidate. UGA’s defense is going to be very good this year, and they will control the line of scrimmage a great deal of the time.

4.43 Isaiah Crowell Nike 40-yard dash time to 4.52 Richard Samuel Nike 40-yard dash time, yes Mark Richt Isaiah Crowell is faster than Richard Samuel, however, there are 150 faster recruits 2011 recruiting class alone and 750 faster on rosters this 2011 season than Isiaiah Crowell, according to Nike. Isaiah Crowell is not that fast. In fact, we have 2 dozen players far faster than 4.43, which is average speed while 4.52 is not a good time at all in the 40-yard dash – not for a coach talking about the speed of his running backs. Isaiah Crowell is not fast; that is not why he is ranked the # 1 running back in the nation. Balance, cuts, change of direction – these are Isaiah Crowell’s real advantage, while we have to teach him to hold onto the football this season – which I have already pointed out will end the season with UGA having put the ball on the carpet and up for grabs 30 times.

Dawgs must run their offense to counter the BS quickness on offense and defense. That as someone mentioned is line up and just crush them between tackles and throw to the TE’s. Fancy plays will be suspect due to their quickness. Out size alone on offense is a plus…..USE IT in the play calling.

RedandBlackDAWG

August 9th, 2011
8:07 am

Crowell’s ability to not take a direct hit is what makes him good. He can juke you in the open field or shift out of the way from taking a direct hit. You don’t always have the to be the fastest, you just have to be able to stop and change directions quickly. Once he gets up to speed for SEC ball, he will probably be a real good one. He has a quick burst to get to the outside, and defenses will get tired of expanding their field of responsibility to cover his range. He get’s to the hole quick and although he will never be a bruiser, that is just fne. We have Sammuels to do that and keep defenses honest. I think if teams play overly agressive to try and stop him, there will be plays open for TE’s and WR’s. UGA doesn’t need to go for the bomb each time. They need to control the ball, and keep the O line from having to hold blocks all day long. Quck effective runs will do that. 2 times 5 equals ten and gives you a new set of downs and hopefully, the light goes off in Bobo’s head this year, and he works to have a good game plan, that leans to our strengths, not our weaknesses.
