UGA practice update: Defense wins day on first day of full contact

ATHENS — A quick post-practice update. . . .

  • S Shawn Williams on first day of full contact: “All I know is Branden Smith came up and hit somebody so hard he knocked their helmet off.”
  • DE DeAngelo Tyson said Isaiah Crowell so quick and shifty that nobody got a good shot on him today.
  • CB Branden Smith confirms he’ll be returning punts again, or at least intends to. “There’s competition there. Me, Boykin, TK and some freshmen. But I’m not going to make it easy for them.”
  • B. Smith on sharing No. 1 with Crowell: “Me and Isaiah are both all right with No. 1. He plays offense and I play defense so it’s not a problem. If they asked me to I’d wear another number if they needed us together on offense. . . . The number doesn’t make me. I make the number.”
  • Injuries: TB Brandon Harton out with “mild concussion.” Will return later this week “hopefully,” Richt says. . . . CB Chris Sanders held out of contact due to bruised shoulder suffered yesterday. . . . Boykin and Jakar Hamilton still out with hamstring pulls. “Usually 7-10 days,” Richt says. Going on six days tomorrow.
  • Lot of talk about “energy vampires.” See blog later.
  • Sophomore Chase Vasser solid No. 2 at SAM (strongside) outside linebacker. This means he’d start if Jarvis Jones unable to go in Game 1. T.J. Stripling and freshman Ramik Wilson also getting work there.
  • Vasser into theater, acting, movies and modeling. Looks the part of action hero.
  • LB Michael Gilliard having phenomenal camp, per Richt and others. Busted lip in 3-on-3 drill today. “Mike’s one of the guys who has flipped the switch, so to speak. He’s decided he’s going to do it the Georgia way and he’s doing it well.”
  • CMR gives more love to Damian Swann and Malcolm Mitchell. Go ahead and put them in the “definitely will play” category along with Crowell, Ray Drew.
  • CMR said Crowell “really good at running behind his pads.”
  • Defense “won the day” in very close competition. Coaches keep score every day using points system. Was 17-17 going into last four or five plays of days. Then No. 3 D whipped up on No. 3 O.
  • Freshmen thrilled about “first chance to get to wear Silver Britches,” Richt said.
  • Richard Samuel and Crowell both running with No. 1 offense.
  • Richt says Samuel “trucked” freshman safety yesterday. “He’s a locomotive when he gets up a head of steam. . . . Crowell faster getting around the end.”
  • Richt said only injury was a “mildly sprained ankle” but could not recall who.

For there to be freshmen who were not the #1 rated class to be playing is one of two things:

1. They were really the #1 class or 2. the returning team sucked.

Joey- I agree…..while CMR isnt looking for the Freshmen to save the program- they have brought a new attitude and outlook to this team……for many years it was me me me me me me …Stafford…ealey…king…others. Now finally it is TEAM…..that seems to be the biggest thing this group has done…..funny how all the older guys stepped up and responded when they saw this group comming…

It is music to my ears to hear players enjoying competition at the position level. It breeds team thought and winning.

The good news is we havent heard how good the OLine is going to be this year- over the past 3-4 years, they have been probably the biggest disappointment- with the running back a close 2nd…

With all the work Coach “T” did with the guys, why are we have these hamstring issues. Maybe
the long distant running is not a substitute for wind sprints. Seems to me you can get 4th quarter
stamina from sprints rather than become marathon runners. Football is a game of quick bursts not long jogs.

All I want is passion when they go out the this year. One negative thing I can remember from last year during the S.C game was was Marcus ran the ball up the middle and Rambo just stood there looking not in on the tackle. There , that is my one negative comment about the Dawgs. Hope we have enough they have enough passion this year to stop that.

Dawg in Lex…..I love that comment about replacing Carlton up the middle with Figgins and Samuel. You are right, there is no tape on that. ANd as far as keeping all the good reports under wrap. I kinda feel like Nick Nolte in Blue Chips…..”I”ll go over and give em our play book and tell them exaclty what we are going to do. Because its not what you do, its how you do it, GDit.” I want them to know exactly what we are going to do and still jam the ball up their collective arses. get em dogs!!

Exactly, Joe. There IS a new attitude, and it doesn’t really matter where it began, Joe T? Drew? Murray?

As AltamahaDawg has “asked” me, why does last season’s results have anything to do with this season’s expectations?

I still have little confidence in Bobo. When he leads us to at least a SEC East title, I will change my mind. But there is no reason that this team, in a down year in the East, can’t contend.

If we do, we will begin contending again regularly, down year or not.

Went by Florida practice while I was in Gaineville on business. Sure was a lot of yelling and screaming back and forth between Muschamp and Weis. I look for those two to come to blows before long. Can only be one chief and it looks like both want to be the head guy right now.Can you spell TROUBLE.Florida is a team with no direction right now.Its bound to carry over to the season.

I just want to see some PASSION this season. Passion from the players and the coaches. Mark Richt needs to show passion when we do something right or wrong….also let Grantham use his style of up in your face coaching with these boys. They won’t screw it up then.

The last 3 or 4 years it’s been all about one or two players that UGA thought they could count on. It never was a “TEAM”. Everyone thought Stafford & Moreno could save the team. Didn’t happen. Everyone looked to A.J. to win games for us. We never had that “win as a team” mentality. I think we have that now.

2nd year under Grantham’s defense…new S & C program…best special teams unit in the country…new hunger & attitude…one of the easiest schedules in years…best QB in the SEC…Samuel & Crowell toting the rock…better personnel on defense…etc, etc.

This will be a good year.

Lexie, I have heard that Weis will be in the press box where is where most O coordinators view the game. From most of what I have heard from the insiders I know from the Gainesville Sun, Muschamp will turn over the O to Weis much like Spurrier turns the D over to whoever his current D Coordinator is.

What is the name of Sulley’s blog?

When the injuries pile up it wont matter if they are on offense or defense there is NO dept to this weak team. One thing they do have is one of the easiest schedules in the country.

I also remember the down year before Vince Dooley won it all. so doing my best Dooley. We have an O line we just aren’t sure about. Our best Offensive players may just be true freshmen. And we start out with Boise State, who some think is the best team in the west. And South Carolina who won the eastern division last year. BUT on the others side we have a rebuilt D, so, doing my best Erk Russel. We are going to hit you and hit you again and when you split our lip we are going to get up and SMILE and hit you some more. Weiss will be in the press box. This way there will be nothing impeding the flow of hotdogs and Papa John pizzas from the source to his mouth

We really are better off with Crowell and Co

August 8th, 2011
3:32 pm

THe apple barrel was spoiled by King and ealey and they left good.

UGA is far, far better off with the desires of Samuel and Crowell and MY MAN Boo Ken Malcom at running back along with Carlton Thomas and his cousin Hartley. UGA is much better off with this squad of backs, folks. Wait and see.

A proper, positive attitude is 98% of the deal and these young men have it.

Go Dogs.

PS the UGA D line is better than it has been in several years, including when Geno Atkins, Jeff Owens, Kade Weston and those guys were here. No slight to them but now, we are much deeper and better. D backs are too.

August 8th, 2011

If UGA can win the Boise game and the SC game, then both of them being Top 12 teams, that would boost UGA into the very upper echelons, albeit possibly briefly for us. It is a long season for sure and we need to play em one at a time. I know that.

UGA needs to re merge as a solid, Top 4 SEC caliber team and these two wins need to be signature UGA/CMR wins that we have not seen in some years now.

Gooooooooooooooooooooo Dogs.

Ya’ll keep worrying about Wies’s weight, You would be better served to worry about
Bobo’s brain. I’ll take a fat Weis over a dumb Bobo. Do you really think when he and Richt are fired this year anyone would pick Bobo up as a OC, Richt yes, Bobo no.
