‘Real football’ underway as Bulldogs go through first full-contact practice

ATHENS – Greetings from Woodruff Practice Fields. It’s time for real football!

The Bulldogs’ fifth practice is underway and this is the first of 11 in which they’ll be in full pads and hitting. I just got my first look at the 2011 team in full gear and, without question, it’s an athletic-looking group. Unfortunately they didn’t give media but 15 minutes access this morning and all that was their standard drill work they do every day.

The first full-contact practice is one the returning lettermen always look forward to. They look at it as their opportunity to “indoctrinate” the freshmen and first-year players on the ways of SEC football. It’s a chance for them to give the “Dream Teamers” a little dose of reality, if you will.

We’ll have an opportunity to talk to Coach Richt and selected defensive players around lunchtime so I’ll get you an update then on how they think things went.

Couple of quick observations from my short time out there this morning:

  • Looks like the same guys are still out, including CB Brandon Boykin and S Jakar Hamilton.
  • Didn’t see heralded walkon TB Brandon Harton with other RBs. Thought he may have been pumping iron at far end with other injured players. But they restrict where we can be on practice fields and, by default, what we can see. So I’ll have to get some verification later.
  • TB Ken Malcome still out there fighting through groin. Looked good this morning, in my opinion.
  • CB Chris Sanders, who has been getting a lot of love lately, was in green jersey, signifying non-contact status. But he was working out hard with everybody else early on.
  • – DB Nick Marshall just an impressive athletic specimen. That dude is going to have to get on the field somehow, some way.
  • – Big John Jenkins looking more natural in a No. 66 jersey. He’s still going to wear No. 6 this season but they didn’t have one big enough to go over his shoulder pads, per Athens Banner-Herald. Some new No. 6s on the way.
  • Stacy and DeNae LeMay, the parents of QB Christian LeMay, were intently watching their son from the sidelines.

Would love to know 2 things if you get a chance to ask the Defensive players later – Who, besides Christian, has emerged as a vocal leader of the Defense. Who are the guys looking to? 2nd Question – Is there any thought to who will be the best Pass Rushing End/OLB? We haven’t had a Pollack/Moses dominator – and we all know that one dominant player coming off the end on every play changes the flow of an opposing Offense (Kellen and Garcia need to be eating Grass if we’re goiing to stop them)

I’m really looking forward to seeing what our secondary can do. This should be our best secondary group in years. No more 5′8 corners. We recruit corners that are at least 6′0 and I love that. Gives them a better opportunity to hang with the bigger receivers (6′2, 6′3 receivers).

I love that we look really athletic which means we look bigger and stronger. The S & C program will help out. It just takes time for these guys to get used to practicing again. They’ll be just fine.

Sounds like things are good. Just please NO injuries, or anything of that matter. Go Dawgs!

@rabiddawgfan– You have no idea how excited fans should be about this secondary…Coach Lakatos brought up a valid point. These kids are athletes. In our new CB depth chart we have guys that not only played corner, but SS,FS,WR, RB, QB, kick/punt return not to mention track stars, hoop stars, baseball studs, just pure athletes… SO all its gonna take is finding each guy his role and coach him up a bit.. If Jones can’t go then either Stripling or Drew will get the nod to start vs. Boise. I really don’t want Jones to have to sit out because he’s our main starter and if he was able to play then we’d have all 11 guys that went through camp and spring together fighting for the same goal. To pound Boise into submission.

I think our offensive guys are all find and raring to go. Our O-line, if stays healthy will be one of the best in the SEC. There, I said it. Our receivers will step up. Really excited about Malcolm Mitchell. He may even start or at least play vs. Boise. Quarterback is already set and I like what I’m hearing about our running backs.

The last devastating hit I can remember from any safety since blue left was Reshaad Jones two years ago against USC or okie St. And he got a 15 yard penalty to boot. This has been what’s missing on d (and second half adjustments). I’ll give up 15 yards first drive of every game if it gets us respect (and not considered “soft” again). I don’t care if the rules try to make you play soft, we shouldn’t.

The one thing I’m going to be watching as close as our win loss record is in game adjustments. That’s what bvg did so well and slick Willie was incapable of and I have yet to see from Grantham. It seems like we go in with a game plan and don’t adjust it if it’s not working. Examples: USCe and GT. Here’s a hint: THEY’RE RUNNING THE BALL!! if they are hammering you on the ground, take it away from them and make them beat you with the pass.

I kinda agree with Nate the Great in a way.. We’ve become too conventional.. too textbook.. too predictable.. thats not the SEC of 2011.. a team needs to be able to not only play when they are making plays but also adjust their own game when the other team is getting over on them.. positive thing is that we stepped up our turnover ratio last year tremendously, now all its gonna take is turning that into points.. which might take our defense to do for us.. another upside is that as long as u get the ball close to 50 yards away from the posts, we got a kicker in blair walsh that can guarantee points, not that fans can/should settle for that. but its nice to know that hes there just in case..

You may want to read something besides the AJC to get more info about games. Look people understand it is easy in the bubble of ajc homerville to not find out that teams UGA is playing are as talented than the vaulted UGA juggernaut but it makes the shock less abusive on Saturday afternoons.

I don’t know how fair it is to say that Grantham never recognized that tech was going to run the ball and adjust to it. Pretty likely he knew that. The whole world knows they are running the ball. Not really sure anyone “adjusted” to it very well. I guess it’s fair to say that his defense didn’t adjust to SC running the ball well, but that was in fact the first real game those guy had played in the new alighment. You are assuming they had an “adjustment” and just didn’t use it. I’m not so sure. And SC also killed us on a few passes that day. I think it’s just they were real comfortable with any of it yet. They did seem to improve as the year went on.

This brought back extreme anger from the Florida game where we DID NOT jump on the fumble in the first quarter — which would have been HUGE.

Can you please ask Richt/Grantham if they stressed gaining possession on fumbles and not trying to be hero?? Ever since Odell took it to the house against AU 98 yards or something it seems like we are physically unable to simply laydown on the ball…..

I thought we did an admirable job against tech. I just think that is a terrible game to pick as an example of “adjusting”. They do what they do. You play it. What’s to “adjust” to? You knew what they are doing on Tuesday. To me not “adjusting” is that a team found something you weren’t expecting, or some weakness, and you don’t make any changes. Not you couldn’t stop something. Tech’s entire philosophy is to do the same basic thing, with a variety of options to counter where your guy is taking out the lane, so I do think its best to just play it straight up and make the play.

But my point was that IF it’s a matter of recongnizing they were running and adjusting to it, (as the poster claimed Grantham didn’t do and presumably could have) then everybody on tech’s schedule would have just done that.

“who are the “top 50″ OLine prospects”

Well for one….Nate Potter (RS Senior), OT, 6’6″ 300 is considered the top OL prospect for 2012. I guess he could start at those Ga High Schools.

But not to worry, just pointing out the absurdity that UGA fans think NOBODY has any talent but the might Dawgs. I am sure the 4-deep supermen in Athens can handle everybody like they always do….that is until the season starts.

Hey jacklegs! I think the coaches uderstand the whole Jarvis Jones situation. I’m sure they appreciate all of your knowledgable advice to make sure someone else is ready. And DawginLex, you’re on the blogs everyday! This is the first you’ve heard or seen about Lonnie Outlaw? He was recruited by UGA last year but couldn’t make the grade. That’s why he’s at GMC. rev and mrs lemay better stay out of it. their son is now an adult and a member of the georgia football team. what happens with him will be at the behest of the coaching staff. this is not high school ball in south carolina. in the best interests of winning games. he has no right or guarantee to take over from a proven qb, who is noted as the best in the conference. sub? ok. maybe. but probably not this year. mason is a great potential player. and lemay may be third for forth down. he’ll have to eat that. that’s the way it goes. if he’s best, beyond best, i’m sure he’ll play. mom and dad need to understand they are NOT coaching the dawgs. this sounds messy. my guess? the spoiled brat will wind up at a div2 team in the next year. how about southern or, even, teck?

All depends on one’s idea of “adjustment” I guess. For me, if what we had planned to use to stop or slow a ground game isn’t working out so well, I say it’s time to adjust and do something different. Of course, I’m not paid to coach either. There might be some correlation to that.

Our defense was bad all year and at that point I was use to it so the frustration level was low, except, it was Tech. I hate to see them have success at any level.

I think the defense’s inability to stop the run was created by a lack of a true nose tackle. However, I thought the Tech game was horrible.

We were lucky that we didn’t miss the exta point, give up a 80 yrd TD drive, AND a 2 point conversion, in 1:22 with no TO left? That’s actually the exact opposite of being lucky.

Well this was just too much for a couple of your fellow homers who somehow took that as an affront their egos and went out on an attack spree. If you can’t handle the good and the bad discussion of the UGA team, then perhaps you should stick with the media guide.

Boise isn’t rated #5 in the country because they have lousy offensive and defensive lines….the opposite is true. The Boise State game will be interesting in that it matches Georgia’s 4 and 5 star athletes against Boise’s 2 and 3 star athletes for the very most part. In fact, Boise has only a handful of players that were rated in the top 50 at their positions. Conversely, it is rare that a player rated below the top 50 at their position makes the two deep at Georgia. a rough estimate would be something like 40 top 50 players on UGA’s roster versus 8 on Boise’s.

I’m not dissing Boise here. They win games, they play with heart and discipline and it should be an interesting matchup. It is a tribute to their coaches and players how well they play compared to what they are ranked on recruiting day.

From a pure recruiting standpoint. Boise gets only one 4 star player each year according to Scout.com for their Sophmore through Senior classes. Other than the QB who was rated 4 stars the other three were linebackers. That doesn’t mean they can’t play and they can’t win.

I guess we will find out in a couple of weeks how much recruiting matters.

UGA will be starting a FB that was 3 stars on offense and two offensive linemen. On defense, one lB that was 3 stars on defense and maybe one safety depending on who wins that job. Other than that, all of Georgia’s starters will be 4 and 5 star players.

UGA will actually have a dozen backups that were 4 star players not including the incoming freshman. The 2nd and 3rd string TE’s were both rated 4 stars and that doesn’t even include Jay Rome coming in as a freshman. Boo Malcombe is at 3rd string at RB and was 4 stars and we have 4 and 5 star receivers buried on the depth chart (or at least not expected to start). Boise doesn’t have a single 5 star guy on the roster and UGA is hoping that Brown who was rated 5 stars becomes the 3rd or 4th option this year for Murray.

Now, Boise won a lot of games last year and UGA DID NOT beat a single good team, so recruiting didn’t do much for Georgia last year. If Boise prevails, you certainly have to say that their staff coached their butts off.

He turns out to be the best in NCAA history, doesn’t have anything to do with the rating. I hate having to explain things to opposing fans, it’s dumb, try to learn about the sport ok.

If we can beat Boise it will have to be power running the football, we can’t get in a shoot out or try and finesse them and have a chance…that being said I think we line up and just pound it at them and by the 3rd quarter baring a lot of turnovers I think we have a good chance to win. From everything I have heard, it would be an abomination if Nick Marshall, Malcolm Mitchell, and Isiah Crowell don’t start or atleast see the field by the second offensive set. It would seem if there is indeed a need for a review of our coaching staff if this happens. And this is the first time I have criticized our coaches. It seems as if we have missed out on having the most athletic men out on the field, so hearing about all this athleticism, speed, and agility, something would seem wrong if they aren’t on the field by the start of the season.

DawginLex………………….

You’re actually right……………..That’s the only thing I worry about is the trip to the other side of the country and the first game. But since Boise hasn’t stumbled on their first games against Oregon and VT even though they didn’t play how they usually do……… and considering UGA isn’t as good as those teams i’m pretty confident.
……………………….. but I don’t keep in mind that the improbable could happen, but it’s doubtful with Kellen Moore. That guy is amazing, and after this game uga fans will be amazed at what he can do.

You come onto a UGA blog and start talking your crap, I will respond. I don’t live with my mother. She is almost 90.

Bet you live with your mommy, have no college degree and work in some form of food service or retail, if you even have a job. You call me a “looser” and I’m supposed to think you are some brainiac?

Read – maybe it would – but UGA fans “know” their football program is “elite” – at least they believe that until their first defeat – then they jump off the bandwagon like dog fleas in a dip. UGA hasn’t really done anything from a national standpoint since 1980.

Lex – I don’t live with my mother – she is 93 and in a nursing home.
Actually I have 3 degrees and my employment is far from the the one you describe.
My daughter is a UGA grad – and doing well thanks to her education.
Let’s get back to the topic – are you “jumping ship” if UGA is defeated by Boise and/or USC?

Nope. I never jump ship.

C’mon man, don’t hate. There is nothing worse than a hating troll who has to make stuff up in his search for relevance. It is you sh!t for brains that is a UGA hater, hanging out on a UGA blog posting inane comments looking to extract a negative reaction. That Einstein, is the definition of a “troll”. It fits you exactly.

Now, if you wish to discuss football, most here would welcome that except for those, like you, with trollish behavior. Most here wish to discuss football, you just wish to discuss your hatred for UGA. Grow TFU little man.

We beat VT with a freshman QB and no running game in 2006.

Even though we didn’t play well last year, VT versus us is 9 out of 10 for us.

Opener should be fun. Wish I could go.

I had a spare yesterday with one of the haterz. My contention is that from all indications VT and UGA were as equally bad last year. The result from the only common opponent would bear that out. Boise beat albeit barely a bad VT team. If they had played UGA, would have probably have beaten them to.

Had UGA and VT played similar schedules we’d likely had seen similar results. My point here is; if UGA hasn’t progressed from the team that didn’t bring it to Memphis, Boise will win again.

At the risk of sounding like a homer, I believe this is a much improved team than that one and more importantly the attitude is improved. If this is the case, Boise can’t win.

Boise is a good team for their league and a media darling but, they are no match for a mediocre UGA team

GT has beaten VT. GT would have won last year’s game too if Nesbitt doesn’t go down.

VT is one of the most overrated programs in college football. When you make your name beating Duke, BC, Clemson etc., then get shellacked by Stanford in a bowl game, you are overrated.
