Practice report: Bruce Figgins no ordinary fullback for Bulldogs

ATHENS – They call it “The Chute.” It’s one of the drills Georgia running backs must negotiate early every practice and Bruce Figgins dreads it like a daily root canal.

The object is to zigzag as fast as possible through a series of metal gates while stepping over dummies and holding the football “high and tight.” This is not much of a challenge for 5-foot-7 tailback Carlton Thomas or even the 5-foot-11 Isaiah Crowell. But for the 6-foot-4, 274-pound Figgins, slipping under the metal bar maybe four feet from the ground can be problematic.

“I don’t know how high they are but ‘CT’ can almost stand straight up to them. They come up to his nose,” said Figgins, a senior fullback.”You can imagine how hard it is for me to get under them. Me and Richard [Samuel] have the toughest time. Our heads are always clinking it.”

Trouble is, if you “clink” the metal bar, you have to repeat the drill. So often running backs coach Bryan McClendon is yelling at Figgins, “run it again!”

“I’ll be looking at Coach Mac and he’s like, ‘Don’t be looking at me like that. Get under the chute!’,” Figgins said with a laugh.

It is a bit of an oddity to have a guy Figgins’ size in the backfield. But short on depth at the fullback position, the Bulldogs saw the versatile fifth-year senior as the answer to their problems.

“The tight end and the fullback position, a lot of their assignments actually carry over,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said. “He’s almost the same guy in a lot of formations we run. . . . Bruce is a big fullback who’s athletic enough to re-direct when he’s got to block a certain person. He fits into all the things we need there. He’s got to get used to blocking moving targets in more space and that takes time. But I’ve seen fullbacks that weigh 220 who can do a great job and guys that weight 280 and do it great. It’s just a matter of knowing what to do and wanting to do it bad enough and is he tough enough for that type of contact because it’s a high-contact position.”

A tight end his first four seasons, including a redshirt year, Figgins is sharing fullback duties with the 5-foot-10, 224-pound Zander Ogletree. Figgins entered camp as the No. 1 guy and, by all accounts, will line up first when the Bulldogs face off against No. 7 Boise State on Sept. 3.

Figgins was able to go through the spring at his new position and just now is starting to feel comfortable calling himself a fullback.

“I’m getting more comfortable with the position, more comfortable with the others guys now,” Figgins said. “I’m still learning and working on getting my pad level down, staying low and knee bend, that’s the biggest thing.”

It’s certainly a formidable sight when Figgins is running around the end leading the 6-2, 240-pound Samuel on a power sweep.

“I think people will be a little intimidated by it,” Figgins said. “That’s 500 pounds moving right there. And Richard’s not slow at all. I have to speed up just to get going ahead of him because he’ll run up your back if you don’t. I think we’ll be able to move some people out of the way.”

Fatigue setting in

Richt was not thrilled with the Bulldogs’ third practice, the first in which they went in shoulder pads and helmets.

“A little bit of fatigue is setting in, a little bit of weariness,” he said. “Even this morning when we had a lot of cloud cover and got a little bit of a break, without question fatigue affected the concentration level. The last 30 minutes of practice we dropped more balls than we did the first two and a half practices. We had more penalties. We couldn’t focus when we were tired, which was a big part of our demise a year ago. So hopefully we can learn to fight through it.”

Atlanta’s Swann among early standouts

Friday Richt lauded cornerback Branden Smith, who recorded an uncanny five interceptions during pass skeleton competition. That overshadowed what Richt said has been some exemplary work the last three days by freshman defensive back Damian Swann.

“I didn’t mention Swann yesterday but after I looked at the film I thought he made a couple of really outstanding plays yesterday and he made a couple of very nice plays again today,” Richt said. “He’s competing extremely well.”

Swann is a former AJC Super 11 player out of Atlanta’s Grady High School. Virtually every player asked about the defensive backfield so far has mentioned Swann as being a standout.

Other players singled out by Richt for their good work Saturday were wide receiver Tavarres King, linebacker Michael Gilliard, safety Shawn Williams, tight ends Orson Charles and Aron White and Samuel.

Special teams looking special

Georgia is expected to have one of the best overall special teams groups in the country with All-America candidates at punter (Drew Butler), place-kicker (Blair Walsh) and kick returner (Brandon Boykin). The Bulldogs also think they have one of the best snappers in the country in Ty Frix. Apparently that group looked the part as they went live kicking-team work for the first time on Saturday.

“They were very, very sharp,” Richt said. “The snap, the hold, the kick, I think we were 100 percent in every sort of way. Just about every kick split the uprights right down the middle. We had great times and great operation.”

Richt just kidding about Kellen Moore

Idaho newspapers and some national websites, including DeadSpin.com, have been making a big deal of what Richt said in an interview with an Atlanta radio station this week. Richt reportedly said UGA thought quarterback Kellen Moore had already left Boise State when they agreed to play the Broncos in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game.

Actually, Richt had been telling that story as a joke on Bulldog Club tours all summer.

“I probably embellished the truth a little bit,” Richt said with a laugh Saturday. “[Athletic Director] Greg [McGarity] did say ‘I think that quarterback is gone’ when it first came up. But by the time we signed the contract, we knew he was coming back. Maybe it will go to his head a little bit and he’ll be overconfident.”

Injury report

Defensive backs Brandon Boykin and Jakar Hamilton were out with hamstring injuries and Derek Owens was sidelined with an unspecified injury that Richt said was not serious. Outside linebacker Cornelius Washington (hamstring) and defensive end Derrick Lott (leg laceration) remained sidelined. . . . Tailback Ken “Boo” Malcome continues to practice but is limping noticeably from a groin injury that has plagued him since spring practice. . . . Big John Jenkins made it through the entire workout a second straight day.

Once that big ole boy gets a full head of steam on him running downfield, I will bet that a LB will be just a little worried about the train about to hit him. Just might be able to get those tough couple of yards needed to keep posession of the ball on a drive. As big as he is, I bet when he blocks you, you will know that you have been blocked also.

Good teams will not be intimidated by the dawgs. That is the dawgs problem. They think they are intimidating when they really aren’t. Just play football and don’t worry about how it looks.

Power sweep. A speedy linebacking core will slow that down quite easily, and a 274 pound full back is laughable. Patchwork UGA offense. Yeah, real intimidating.

The Boise game is a mistake. I am all for big OOC games but let’s reserve them for big BCS programs and not hyped up overrated media darling mid majors like Boise. There is nothing to be gained from this game. Eventhough Boise is supposedly the #5 team in the land (a total joke), the haters will just portray it as a mean ole bully cheating SEC team beating up on poor hapless Boise. Lose and it will be humiliating because we’re the big bad SEC and we shouldn’t lose to Boise, eventhough they are supposedly the #5 team in the land (LMAO). We are Georgia. We aren’t some lame program like Georgia Tech that has to play on Thursday night to get anybody to watch our games. We don’t need this.

that is funny. Both figgins and samuel run high and both are very stiff. They will probably both trip over the chalk lines on a sweep. But rest assured there will be 3 or 4 guys waiting on them by the time they get to the corner. Might be the worst r.b tandem in the country. Such a sad state UGA’s running back situtation is in, and it just got worse with Boo still having problems with a groin that has been a problem for 4 months now. The guy will probably never contribute either. Great job RIcht.

For Malcome to still have a groin injury, something else must be wrong or a lot more serious.. As someone else pointed out , we really do need him healthy.
There is no way against a good team Figgins and Samuel are so fast that they can beat 3 linebackers and a couple of safeties to the corner. A 260 pound linebacker will be more than enough to occupy Figgins attention to allow the rest of the defensive backs to get to Samuels before he gets to the corner. I think the main purpose that Samuels and Figgins have is to keep the defensive ends from getting to Murray before he has time to get a pass off.

If Crowell is not ready to help Samuels with the Tailback duties instead of us having 50% run and 50% pass plays I think we could very easily see 75% pass plays at least the first few games. The only thing that will change that is if Murray is allowed to run on every play if he has to, which would be OK with me because I think LeMay will be able to lead this team and get the job done early after what he did in the G game.

dawgan – I have been saying that this is a no win game for UGA – for several reasons:
– IF UGA wins – it’s because they are supposed to.
– IF UGA loses – they are humiliated on on a national stage.

Get outside ATL or the SE – UGA is not as nationally respected as you would believe. UGA is more believed to be a Michigan State or a Clemson – regional powers that from time to time claim a headline nationally – then quickly go back into the pack.

Interesting that UGA needs this national game opener against Boise to regain pride and national attention. Boise??? the same mid-major , former JUCO, national media darling tham makes you LYAO! The same team that beat recently rose bowl and pac10 champ Oregon (twice) and ACC and BCS bound VT – (while UGA was losing to the likes of OK STATE, MS ST, COLORADO and UCF. I would argue that both Oregon and VT programs are ahead of UGA’s – no doubt these schools would have beaten UGA the last few years as UGA has lost 12 games during that time span.

You want to read that again? UGA has lost 12 games the last couple of seasons – and you think you are nationally respected like ALABAMA??? It’s my turn to LMAO!!!!

Bottom line – we appreciate UGA playing Boise – you are correct – this is ALMOST a no win situation. However, it is fun – and I thought sports were supposed to be fun. At least UGA has the BALLS to play a game like this – UGA has a lot on the line. And UGA will gain NATIONAL exposure because this is such a curious and interesting matchup.

Then I went and did some drills w and instructor at 7:30 am and after 45 minutes was about to barf. its just different than running a tread mill and such….Not worried and I hope this wont be a problem.

Just wondering about Boise. people keep saying Georgia is bigger and faster on the lines…Is this true? Where are the stats for that. God I hope so…would love nothing more than a repeat of the Hawaii game. Hope Grantham can get those guys in Moores face and more! Would love to see that guy face down on the Ga Dome carpet a few times! Im not so worried about offense. destin dawg – good campaign and could happen. Boise will be a very good team this year – however – our concern is that UGA is finally getting their act together as this is a very talented and athletic team that has lacked leasdership, focus, discipline and has not played well consistently as a team.

Dawgs are wounded and embarrassed – no arrests this year and leadership appears to be in place – coaching seems to be urgent. I realize that last year was a transition year with a new defensice scheme and staff – and new QB.

As a Boise fan – yes, I am concerned – yet excited we are playing UGA in the dome!

I think most of the fatigue was because CMR changed the practice times. Most of these kids were use to sleeping until 11:00 or 12:00 , eat lunch and get ready for the afternoon practice and then CMR changes them to morning practice. These are young college kids and if you asked each one I bet at least half or more didn’t get more than 3 or 4 hours sleep Friday night. With what they are going through they need 6 to 8 hours rest. We have the size and strength of an Alabama team on steroids. Hopefully this potential power game approach doesn’t elude the grasp of one Mike Bobo. There’s no reason in the world not to use John Jenkins on offense in short yardage situations. Can you imagine Figgins lined up as an H-back with Jenkins in at FB and handing the ball off to Samuel? I disagree that this is a no win situation for the Dawgs. Clearly Boise has much more to loose than Georgia. They are ranked higher and are “supposed” to win…They can see their BCS dreams smashed in game one. They couls actually be the ones playing tight. That siad I think they both are equal in the “gain” department. Would be nice to see the Dawgs playing w a chip on their shoulder…

Boise in Atl, I think that you are correct in your recent post about the UGA football program. That being said, I like the fact we are playing you guys rather some of the openers we have had against those 1-AA or directional teams in the past. My only hope is that it is a closely played game and we are not embarrassed on national tv. A lot of UGA fans are thinking like what happened some years back when Boise came to Athens. I was there, and quite frankly your team was really overmatched that day. However, I for one does not think that has anything to do with NOW, and we certainly will be the underdog in this one. Let’s hope for a well played game by both sides, no injuries for either, and , well, I hope our guys end up with at least one more point than the Broncos!

Yes Vtech lost to James Madison is a better than Georgia, if you think Boise is facing the Georgia team of 2010 then you best think again, Is Georgia as a good as Bama or LSU this year ? I don’t know , but we have the same caliber athlete and if Boise comes in here with the attitude that there playing some second rate ACC school they will leave the dome soundly defeated. Its a very bad physical match up for Boise.Auburn had lost 12 games the previous 2 seasons before winning everything.

Ok first Go Dawgs! Second, TG isn’t Erk..never will be, comparing TG to Erk is like comparing our current TB’s to Walker. This Dawgs will be good but not great. But good wil be all it takes to win the East this year. Don’t worry too much about some pulled muscles, give a week of practice and if still have guys with new injuries, then worry. Takes a few practices to in this heat to get adjusted. But this heat is helping, you train in this heat and that Dome game will feel better than practices.
I love the size in the back field. Last year we were terrible on 3rd and short. This year the dawgs will improve greatly on he short yardage. will help eat clock and in the red zone. Let Crowell get some reps and by midseason, Dawgs could have a very balanced attack with power and speed.
Last, YOU READ IT HERE FIRST. Dawgs will be Defense team, no running the ball, and better than last year pass rush and coverage. I only worry now about the deep ball. But if Dawgs can get a good pass rush, then less time for a deep route. GO DWAGS!!! GATA

I found a Boise blog. They (Boise fans) are almost without exception genuinely expecting not only to win, but to win big. They put a lot of stock in their stats from last year. There is little to no mention or concern about UGA’s size or speed. There is no mention of Murray, or the year he had as a freshman, or the fact that most neutral parties think he will be the best qb in the SEC. It is an interesting perspective. If the Boise team feels anything close to the way their fans feel it is going to be one rude awakening.

What exactly is this 6-4 FB supposed to do? He hates the agility drill which shows that he lacks the skills required for the position.

This is getting silly, the smart move with the horrendous condition of the UGA offensive line would have been to have this 6-4 “275 lb” TE put on 20 lbs and move to tackle. It would have given him the ability to possibly get drafted to the NFL as a OL, instead we get his silly propaganda move so that the coaching staff can get some newspaper articles. Lame.

Another player wasted by the UGA coaching staff. In fact, what is Vegas laying that this kid will be asked to move to the OL about midseason after a couple of injuries to one of the only 5 available OL?

Boise State fans are always that way on their blogs. And, they venture forth on the Internet to all blogs, and always blog like that, Ed. They blogged how they would destroy us all Summer before DJ Shockley made it 38 to nothing to start the game and 48-13 when we cleared the bench.

There is 1 player on their entire roster who is ranked either a 4-star or 5-star recruit, according to Scout.com this morning – 4-star Kellen Moore who is 5′ 11″ and 179 lbs.

2.41 average stars all 5 recruiting classes 2007-2011 Boise State
3.58 average stars all 5 recruiting classes 2007-2011 UGA

There are 51 four-star and 5-star recruits we have and 1 they have. This is not a football game, and they need to do their talking now – because after the game, they will be nowhere to be found – just like last time when DJ Shockley ran for 1 and threw for 5 more TD against their 2-star defense.

This game will be no game at all. Boise State is a cupcake, whose average opponent for 11 of their 12-game regular season games is # 81.

This game is a blow-out, unless we are not in shape (which there seems to be quite a bit of factual data now on us not being) and unless we put the ball on the carpet over 2 times a game (which seems quite clear to me.) That will only tend to make Boise State a game. They have no hope of beating UGA : None.

I challenge everyone here to just take a look at the size difference in UGAs starting offensive and defensive lines against Boise State.. The numbers are appalling.. Georgia has the major advantage in the trenches, which means in theory, that we control the run on offense and defense(which happens to be many coaches success to a winning game.) Boise State played a big game against VA Tech last year but beyond that what team did they play with an SEC caliber defense?? I think Georgia wins this one by at least 10 points. But who knows?

Troll Power Ratings

@JustinTime: I agree. Georgia has a huge size advantage. Boise has a couple of nice skill players (qb and receivers, but almost everywhere else that would appear to be grossly undermanned vs. UGA. BUT….the betting line is close. Someone asked about the betting lines for the Boise game in ‘05 and the bowl game against Hawaii. That would be interesting to know.

Regarding the Va Tech game, Va Tech turns around and loses the next week to James Madison, so they certainly weren’t a powerhouse even if they did go on to have a good year in a weak conference prior to getting crushed in a bowl.

When I played ball, it was always harder the first week, then got easier as Summer practice continued, mabe you never played the game……..or mabe you did and started strong and got weaker the more you practiced?……..Now for South Carolina, I don’t care if it is Steven Garcia or Roy Rogers……..you are going to have two pretty big and two pretty good dudes lining up on the QBs nose, one @ 6ft4in 360lbs, the other @ 6ft6in 355lbs………I think Joe Montana would get some pretty “happy” feet with that in his face…….stuff the run, slap the QB around a little, use the “hedges” to our advantage, along with the heat………and wala!………Georgia 27 South Carolina 24……….special teams wins this one, and “if” we can make it to Jacksonville undefeated………we might just win the whole “ball of wax”………..Regards, RED

Faulty logic again on your part my friend. Your whole premise is based on Boise’s defeat of a very weak VT and a highly questionable Oregon team. You add that to the idea that UGA’s program can’t hold a match to those programs. I beg to differ on both points. Georgia is “in general” a stellar program averaging 3-4 losses in the last 10 years, that’s solid for a program. Granted, we’ve lost our way definitely for the last 2 years arguably 3. Our wheels fell off. If you reasoned that it will continue into 4 years, you would have a more of a position. I sense you believe much of our problems may be corrected.

Second point, if Boise hadn’t beat Oregon twice and VT once at this point in time, this kick off classic game wouldn’t even be matched and Boise if playing UGA at all would be looked at as a cupcake game.

Your guys are a good team when matched to like schools. Even with your recent successes you still have huge questions because of your schedule. You are resting too much on the losses of UGA last year to weaker opponents. That is a point but, only a point. You’ll have to bank on UGA hasn’t improved. I believe you’ll be disappointed.

Moore is good, your coach is good, your team has good chemistry but, that won’t be enough. I just do not see your guys having enough size, speed or depth to last the 4 quarters it will take. Remember, VT easily could be considered weaker than UGA last year even as bad as UGA was. Has UGA improved?, Has Boise improved? We’ll see

This betting line stuff leaves me a little baffled. If Boise state is such a powerhouse that they are rated NBR 5 in the country by the coaches poll; How is it, that Georgia at NBR 22, is so close in the betting line? I think a lot of it, both the polls and the bettimng lines are designed to do nothing but make money for the services that provide it. I really place no stock in either this early in the season.
They are doing much like Boise is when looking at UGA. Last years records don’t really tell the true story about in any team in college. We shall see how the teams perform on the field, but I think a few folks are in for a surprise. Bigger, faster and in shape UGA will turn some heads in the game. UGA will wear them down in the fourth, but has to start out using it’s physical advantages and not let Boise go up and down the field before they decide to get in the game. 60 minutes of football is what will be needed.

He wasn’t difficult to bring down when met at the line or in the backfield. One could attribute much of that to his vision and lack of teaching. Attempting to make a hole where there isn’t one. He’s fast and strong but few TB have the ability to do that. He didn’t show the finesse moves as did King or Ealy. In the open field he was a different back and very difficult to bring down if they could catch him. I feel confident he now knows to be patient and you’ll see a different Samuel

VT with UGA’s schedule would have likely finished as bad as UGA. FL or Texas was as equally bad as UGA and VT. VT had a better record but that is close to the same argument about Boise ST isn’t it?

The only common opponent of the two was GT. VT barely squeaked by the Nerds as did Georgia. We could pontificate all day on the other aspects and they would mean diddly squat. Georgia wasn’t very good last year, neither was VT.

Ebb and flow my good man, ebb and flow. Look back over the last 10 years and you’ll see the East being dominant over the West as much as vice versa. Means absolutely nothing. Yes, the East sucked last year. You won’t hear me denying that and I’ve never stated differently. No spin zone in ARdawg’s camp. Georgia has had problems of late, May have some this year too but, they may not. My question of Boise in ATL’s logic is sound

The SEC East was bad last year, but it was a couple notches above than ACC coastal.

The key for UGA against Boise, is to start fast, and keep pounding them, with the superior size and speed UGA has. I don’t think UGA can come right out of the box and have the fantastic running game, but they will do OK. I am not worried about their passing game, because I think with Murray and the receivers available, they will step up. Keep pressure on Boise’s QB all day, and UGA will only lose the game, if they make a lot of mistakes on offense. Play ball control, and try not to go for the home run every time you have the ball, so that the UGA defense is not out there all day long and UGA will win. As long as the offensive line recognizes that Boise is smaller, but can speed rush around the ends, so make sure the RB’s and Figgins are there to put up a block, and you will neutralize their rush. Do that and you can control the line of scrimmage and game clock on Boise.

Control the clock, control the game.

To all of my fellow Dawgs if they had been practicing two a days for 2 weeks and guys were getting fatiqued on an overcast day then I would be worried about their conditioning. But for this to happen the first 2 to 3 practices with the temperature index at 105 plus, trust me when I say this. It is no big deal and btw I do know what it is like as I went through this every summer for quite a few years in junior high school, high school and at Georgia. Also for the posters information— a pulled groin is a tricky thing, sometimes they heal up rather quickly but in some cases and it appears to be that way in Malcome they seem to linger and it has been my experience that sometimes all you can do is just stay off of it and let it heal.

Anyway looking forward to seeing if the attitude of this team is better than it has been the last 2 seasons and hopefully these guys come out fired up and ready to reestablish themselves as a tough nosed football team.

How about the screen pass with Crowell? The screen pass has been used less under Bobo than at anytime I can EVER remember. It is one of the biggest gaining plays there is if you practice it to perfection. It can get you 20 yards when you are 3rd and long against the aggressive defenses but Bobo wants to keep throwing down the field when the defenses are waiting on it and have been stopping us all day.

Throw the screen, throw to the backs behond and over the line! Crowell can break it the distance!

Another thing, we know we have a fullback that can catch with Figgins. That can open up the offense some if Bobo will use it.

@Big Dawg 8/7 3:04pm…………Dead on the money big guy!……hell, most of these experts we are hearing from never suited-up and poped another big dude in 97 degree weather. Those who are jumping the gun over guys like Johnathan Jenkins having a little heat problem on what? the first or second day?………..hogwash……..these DOGS will be ready September 3rd. Furthermore you are absolutely correct regarding Boo’s injury………..some times it’s a quick-fix, I believe in his case, he will probubly be sidelined for part of Summer practice, just mo. Big Dawg……..I don’t know if you are seeing what I hope I’m seeing, but something happened in Athens when coach Todd Grantham was hired………to me, it has been a slow moving train, and that train is quickly picking up speed…..he brought an attack attitude with him, he now has “his” players in place who have a year of his coaching under their belts………coach Richt has shown the door to several “cancer types” and has insisted on good behavior……..I firmly believe in cycles in college football, I see a marked attitude change in the Georgia BULLDOGS………To me this creates chemistry, and you and I have both seen our DOGS as well as others excell with good team chemistry………Me? I’m optomistic, this is the University of Georgia football program we are talking about………wounded after the last three years, yea………but Daddy always said “Even if that DOG is your son, if it is injured, don’t touch it, cause it’ll damn sure bite ya”……….I believe these 2011 DOGS are going to get the bite back we all have waited for………Regards, RED…………..GATA

Do you have a problem writing an English sentence, because your posts are really hard to read.

The average recruiting class ranking, according to Scout.com over the last 5 years that make up this football team who is supposed to beat Georgia by 3 points in game 1 is # 69 in the nation.

UGA over these last same 5 years’ recruiting rankings by Scout.com is # 11.

There is no way that Georgia loses to Boise State. VT sucked last year, of that there is no doubt. But, to say that all VT beat was 2 teams finishing in the Top 25 and they not very highly ranked at all; and leave it at that – is to beg the question that – pardon me – we beat no one in the Top 25 at 0-5 vs teams who finished in the Top 25 and we for good measure lost to 2 teams who did not finish in the Top 25. Finish your sentences too. VT was no good because they beat 2 Top 25…

The UGA team, has been mentally ready to play football probably the whole summer. Anybody that thinks they were not upset by last years record and want to atone for it is kidding themselves. There will be a few stretched hamstrings and the groin injury to Malcome is troubling since it has lasted a long time, but make no mistake about it, they are ready to get it on. They will be physically and mentally ready to play Sept. 3rd. One thing I know, is you have to be extremely careful when pusuing a wounded animal. UGA is that animal hurting from last years performance and any team that takes them lightly does so at their own peril. They may not win the all, but UGA is not going to lay down without a fight.

Just call me a homer, because i am darn proud of the young men UGA has on the field this year. This bunch is going to be ready to play on Sept. 3rd. Boise State is a good team and well prepared but I do not think, even with their abundance of trick plays, they they can handle a more physical, faster team for four quarters. By the third quarter, I think Boise will start to wear down from all of the pounding and then UGA, should control the game completely. Boise does have a quick defensive front line, but if they keep getting met, by the big uglies on UGA’s offense, they will be sore and slowed down a lot come the fourth quarter.
