Georgia has to report more secondary violations due to inadvertent calls

ATHENS — Inadvertent telephone communication once again has forced UGA to report secondary NCAA violations to the Southeastern Conference office.

This time it involves Georgia running backs coach Bryan McClendon. According to Athletic Director Greg McGarity’s Aug. 1 letter to SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, obtained by the AJC via state and federal open records laws, McClendon thought he was calling a friend named Jay Harris when he accidentally called recruiting prospect Drew Harris instead. Harris is a four-star running back prospect from Exton, Penn.

What made this a violation is McClendon’s call was made on May 29, 2011. Fellow UGA assistant coach Scott Lakatos had made a recruiting call to Harris on May 3. Therefore the second call was deemed to be a violation of two NCAA bylaws that restrict telephone contact with recruits.

According to UGA’s report, “Jay Harris” appears right below “Drew Harris” in the speed dial directory in McClendon’s cell phone and he accidently hit the wrong entry. McClendon didn’t realize he’d called Drew Harris until his voicemail picked up. McClendon then left Drew Harris a message stating he had inadvertently dialed him and to not call back. McClendon then self-reported the violation to UGA’s compliance office, according to McGarity. Records show the call lasted 47 seconds.

UGA has requested relief from the mandatory two-week phone call ban to Harris and asked the SEC to not assess any penalties “given the mitigating circumstances” and because “no recruiting advantage was gained.” The SEC has not reviewed the case.

Inadvertent phone calls have been a problem for UGA athletics in 2011. The school has had to report more than a half-dozen incidents of “pocket-dialing” and sending impermissible texts rather than permissible emails due to cell-phone usage mistakes this year.

UGA also reported this week that gymnastics assistant coach Julie Clark violated NCAA phone contact bylaws when she called an unsigned prospect Brandie Jay to wish her “Happy Valentines Day” on Feb. 14.

Is that all you & the AJC have got Chip? Seriously?

“Inadvertent phone calls a problem at UGA”? Heck this time last year we led the Fulmer Cup ratings.

This year tech gets probation for lying, cheating and covering-up and the AJC never sniffed it until the day the NCAA broke the story. Pathe-tech!

I suggest all staff remove all prospects’ phone numbers from their phones. Put a list in a lock box with only Richt and the compliance coach having keys which must be used simultaneously like missile launch codes. Dip wads!

After breaking secondary violations for so long don’t you think they just might be intentional if they keep happening ? Just saying .

“inadvertent phone call have been a problem for UGA athletics in 2011.” Define PROBLEM. So Stanford didn’t have any? Was it a level 1 or a sub level 4? Is there a College athletic program that had zero inadvertent calls ?

This is a joke. They need to lighten up on a few of these rules….Although I agree it protects the HS kid and their families. Reporting something like this is dumb………..But, if THEY find out and you haven’t, you would get TECHED………….( new word: The process of being put on probation by the NCAA for ignoring a rule or contact from the NCAA as to a possible rule violation…….Or just doing as you please)

Why is this story going to become such a big deal. A coach makes a mistake dialing a phone number. So what. Its something we all may do. Hardly news shattering. I am a GT fan but I don`t think this is even newsworthy.

I’d be willing to bet everyone on here has butt dialed someone on their cell phone call list at least five times…..Gotta love the Tech smack talkers…they need to worry about thier own team and the current NCAA probation thier on…plus their football team sucks…..zz_gator…Know where I can get a hold of a stolen credit card that one of your athletes took off their dead girlfriend?

Who in their right mind would ever believe such an out and out lie? Prospects names and phone numbers in a cell phone? You have to inviting trouble and violations by doing such a dumb thing.
This phone call stuff is going to cost UGA some scholarships and reprimands. This is not funny anymore, it is downright comical and someone needs to held accountable.

And for any UGA fan making excuses, grow up and realize that this staff is desperate to save their jobs and shortcuts are being taken.

Meanwhile you have Bama players signing autographs in exchange for suits and probably money, sCam getting paid by Auburn, UNC’s coach resigning and the NCAA dropping probation on Tech yet again.

Even in the face of all this the desperate AJC has to print this drivel to drive folks to the blog. Sad, really.

An inadvertent speed dial with no direct contact results in an NCAA recruiting violation? That’s absolutely absurd. Talk about form over substance. Whatever happened to good old cash payments to recruits? Now THAT’S cheating!

If this type absent minded thing continues the NCAA will eventually penalize us. Georgia needs to have a training class for all the coaches and especially the head coaches on how to use a cell phone and a class on compliance with the NCAA rules. Then the coaches need to have the patience to use it correctly and prove they have the intelligence not to make a mistake.
If I was the NCAA I would send a registered letter to every college stating this type violation will not be considered minor any longer and treated as serious. Then, I bet the colleges would treat it as serious too, which they are not doing now.

Not that I think this is a big deal but are UGA coaches really that dumb that they keep false dialing/texting recruiting prospects? Seems more likely they are just doing whatever they want and reporting it because it doesn’t matter anyways.

This issue reveals:

1.) If UGA was wilfully “cheating” they would not self-report — this shows aggressive compliance action by the Athletic Dept
2.) Highlight’s the trivial and mis-guided nature of NCAA by-laws
3.) Demonstrates the absurdity and embarassingly poor job that the AJC did on the GT investagation — the AJC continually spams UGA w/ FOIA requests trolling for any possible nugget while GT receives a Letter of Inquiry from the NCAA is under investigation for over a year. Outstanding work guys!!

good thing the ajc is using the open records act to such great success. To bad they failed to do it in Tech’s case and never knew they were under NCAA investigation. This paper has become so bad that it’s comical.
Where is the story on the 4th arrest this year of a UF football player for pot?
Where is the story about the Auburn player who was kicked off the team for selling his BCS ring for $500?
No instead we get this little nugget above about an (1!) butt dial, and then the nonstory about Troupe earlier in the week.
Stay classy AJC, and make sure to continue to use your powers of the press for such needed work!

The real question is why the personal and business numbers are on the same phone. Do they make personal calls on a University phone, or does the school not provide business phones to the coaches? The separation would make them stop and think, and avoid personal use of state assets.

Yes, I do. There is only about 1000 ways to avoid this. They could just not keep the recruits numbers in their cell phone, separate them into different folders, use a different phone for contacting recruits, look before they press buttons, etc.
