What do you want to know as Georgia Bulldogs open camp today?

Athens — Georgia is holding its annual preseason “Media Day” later today. After lunch in the new multipurpose facility at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, we’ll get a 30-minute, question-and-answer session with head coach Mark Richt followed by a session with selected players.

Actually, us media types don’t get to select the players. We don’t know just yet which players will be made available to us. But we do know none of them will be true freshmen. They’re off limits for interviews until August 11th.

You can expect the usual team leaders to be in attendance. Just guessing here but I suspect guys like quarterback Aaron Murray, linebacker Christian Robinson, center Ben Jones, defensive back Brandon Boykin, wide receiver Tavarres King, tight end Orson Charles and tackle Cordy Glenn will be there. Doubtful big John Jenkins will be available but it’d be nice if he was.

Anyway, I need your help. I’m looking for some feedback. There are a lot of obvious storylines heading into the 2011 season and we’ll definitely get to all of those. But I’d like to hear what are some of the other subjects you’d like me to cover.  Is there a particular player you’d like learn more about or a specific question you’d like me to ask Richt or a certain player or one of the assistants? Is there something you’ve always been curious about but was never sure who to ask? What would you ask if you were in attendance?

Well, now’s your chance. Let me know and, if it’s a reasonable request, I’ll try my best to get an answer for you.

After today’s media session, Georgia will conduct it’s first of 29 preseason practices. It’s supposed to start around 4:30 p.m. Last time I checked the heat index is supposed to be around 107 degrees then. So I know one of my questions is going to be what kind of special precautions are they making for the extreme heat.

But that’s just me. What would you ask?

Have any incoming Freshmen surprised him in how prepared they are to play, either physically or mentally?
How big of a role are the super-skill players going to play in this years offense? i.e. Brandon Smith…
Where does he think Sanford Stadium would rank in the SEC in the most intimidating places to play in light of LSU’s Death Valley coming in at #5 in the world in that category?

Chip I would like to know if coach Grantham is going to be more animated on the sidelines this season, being that after the first game last year for some reason (which we all know why) he pretty much “contained” himself. Second, if all of us are going to be able to know what play Bobo is going to call in every situation as we usually can. Might he have some surprises this year? Thanks

What is the position on full contact practices this fall given the depth issues?
Has the reported “study of football” produced new plays so that UGA’s offense is not so predictable in certain situations?
What in your opinion is UGA;s strength this year (I know, I know, tight end)? What about weakness (yeah, RB and OL)? Any other concerns?
Looks like some freshmen will be getting the opportunity to play. Do you see any that you expect to make an impact this year?

What will be different on third down for the defense this year? If they could’ve gotten off the field on third downs last year, ppg would’ve been cut in half and we’re talking at least 9 wins.

Are Richt/Bobo willing to keep their foot on the throat of the opposing defense if they get ahead by more than 10 points. Seems like any time a decent lead is established, play calling goes very vanilla (i.e. Ga Tech game in 2010). Great teams don’t let off the gas until the game is over!

Chip,
I want to know why the AJC has you guys (not just you, but the whole sports staff) post one or two blogs per week. Nothing against you, but with football season upcoming, we should see a fresh article every day. In the old days when we got the AJC daily, they didnt publish the same article day after day (look at Mark Bradley’s piece today; it’s about a week old).

AJC should have a couple of writers cover the Dawgs and the Jackets and every team and have daily news/reports. What we have after that first day passes is not news…it is old stale reports. I’m guessing you guys get paid a bonus on the number of hits on your blogs. Is that why Bradley’s piece is still up…waiting til he gets more than the 342 posts currently there?

The only writer who seems to post frequently is Carvell on the high school beat.

Just my two cents worth.

Chip, I have a few questions surrounding the buzz around the new S&C program: Did Joe T have them doing different lifts than DVH or was it the normal lifts with an emphasis on more reps with lower weight? From what I’ve read from your reports it seems the emphasis has been on distance running. What I would love to see is a chart that shows the increase in players weight and max weight on particular lift before Joe T and after. The boys needed more stamina for sure and it sounds like they achieved that, but they also needed to get stronger. I just want to make sure that happened. Thanks!

To the Offense:

To everyone:

Coach Joe T. has the S&C program in a bad place I have read. Long distance running and high rep lifting is the wrong direction.

He needs to be teaching them boys speed and interval running so as to traing their bodies for quick, intense speed then stopping. Long distance running won’t do that. It’ll slow them down.

Also, he needs the guys doing heavy, shorter reps.

They’ll look good getting off the bus, but this old school way of S&C is going to be terrible.

Arguably, the State of Georgia produces some of the best high school players in the country and UGA gets their pick, most of the time; however, why is it that when they get to Athens, something happens to them and most never realize the potential that was expected of them? Were they really that good or is it the coaching? I think it’s probably 50/50……

Each year in this league (maybe not in the ACC) a coach as to have an inventory of beefy, mean, nasty O linemen for depth in order to win. Period.

CMR has since he arrived taken the approach of going after the BIG guys that are highly regarded, regardless of where they reside. This was a huge mistake. North Carolina, South Floirda and Alabama and Tennessee and any state if a guy is highly regarded. State of Georiga puts out plenty of them but we overlooked them in huge numbers for a Jean Giles type of kid or Sturdivant. Now? Gulp.

This shot gun approach will hurt us this year and that is very unfortunate, THIS YEAR we must win. W.O. BIG Beefy, NASTY linemen, UGA is going to struggle and in the end that is CMR’ fault.

Yes, we signed a few OL that left but again …………………. that IS the head man’s fault. His numbers were always too thin and UGA alumni know this one fact has been 60% of our problems. No solid linemen in qty. in about 4 years. Recruiting skill guys and T.E.s does not sustain long drives …………………….BIG UNS do that.

This year will showcase this fault.

I would like to know if our O line has moved out wider in our initial stance than last year or the year before. The years that we had a decent running game was when our O-line was spread out a little more to help create more space and not log jam with all of the big guys up front. When you have too many people up close to each other its hard to create space if all that is needed is to push you in to your own guy. Also, we used to run a lot of misdirections and cut backs. Moreno made a living off of this. what about the two back proform to create misdirection and also what happened to hitting the TE’s over the middle and or quick slants to get the linebackers out of position to run down hill? The slants on the run and dig routes would be able to create space but Bobo has got to get Murray to hit the receivers in stride! Great teams hit their receievers in stride that also keeps the safeties back and the linebackers playing on their heals.

Dawg Tired

August 4th, 2011
10:44 am

What has CMR been doing to get more on the “cutting edge” (his words – not mine) during the off-season and how will these efforts show themselves during practice and the season? In other words, what can we expect to be different, especially on offense where we have become predictable to a fault, in my opinion?

What did we learn from games like the Auburn game last year where it was pretty obvious their defense could not stop us as long as we played “wide-open” but then we reverted to our bland play calling (like we normally do when we got the big lead) and looked horrible on offense the rest of the game. I would say tha twas a game we clearly should have won, but lost because we lost our boldness in calling plays, Some would say we went into an offensive “shell” to try and protect the lead. Of course, against anoffense as potent as Auburn had last year, that was suicide and we basically committed suicide beginning in the second quarter.

Can we expect our offense to be more “wide open all the time in the mode of an Oregon, for example, or does being on the “cutting edge” mean something different tha doing what the really successful team have been doing the last couple of years. Or does being “on the cutting edge” simply mean refining what we already do? In other words, are we so committed to the “Georgia Way” that we will continue to run a 1990’s offense, while other teams are moving to more aggressive offenses?

Need I go on? I suspect that really probing questions will not be asked because they may “upset” the coach.

I would just like to know if CMR will be more involved in the game plan and on the sidelines this year. I know it is kind of hard to step on your coaches feet, but I feel that if he sees some things that could be goping better with the offensive game planning and calls on the sidelines, he needs to step in and let his coach know and offer suggestions on this or that. I think conditioning has been solved, but the article about Bobo not trusting these young players enough last year should signal a red flag for the HC. There doesn’t need to be any holding back this year for UGA, so I want to see CMR a lot more involved on game day, if need be.

I really liked the idea suggested by Vance Duly at 10:44 AM — in light of our predictable, uninspired play-calling of the past couple of years. Last year, media wrote about the strength at TE, yet Charles averaged 2 touches per game. It’s been proven that Carlton Thomas is on the verge of decapitation if we continue to run him up the middle. Our fullbacks seldom touch the ball. In the Texas A&M bowl game, we inexplicably gave the FBs some carries, and they did very well (never to be heard from again…..) So, has Coach Richt reviewed the play-calling tendencies and failings with Coach Bobo? Have they analyzed the current skills of the offense with a willingness to adjust the playbook? Does Coach Richt WANT a creative, dynamic offense that could outscore an Oregon or Boise St. if needed? Is he willing to inject more of a killer instinct in the offensive game plan?

I’m frustrated with our offense stopping what is working, just to go conservative or to “spread the ball around” to various players, as Coach Bobo once called it. We waste several drives per game, it seems, by trying to force plays even if they aren’t working…….

With Georgia clearly underachieving last year, given the level of talent, particularly on the offensive line, UGA was within 7 points of every losing game in the fourth quarter and coud not finish the drill. You have stepped up physical conditining this year including weight lifting and running, but what have you done about changing the attitude of this team? Say what you like about Donnan but those last two classes wond the 2002 SEC title and got CMR off to a damn fast start in Athens. Those two classes where loaded.

You can make the case that top to bottom those are the most solid classes UGA has had since 2000. Richt has a home run at times but thus far more misses than hits since 2005 in recruiting. If it was not the case we would not have the record the past two seasons.

So while none of us liked Donnan we are fools to deny the impact he had long after he left UGA. The cupboard for CMR was far from bare when he landed in Athens.

Can we expect to see new wrinkles in the offensive game plan? Go Dawgs!

Lowcountry Bulldawg

DawginLex,

Clearly Richt coached them, but he had to have the talent to achieve the end results. Who provided the talent?

Shcokley was the first CMR recruit. At what point did he actually step on the field in Athens as the starter? And why?

A. 2005 because a Jim Donnan recruited QB reminded CMR so much of himself in the way he played the game and lead the team.

If JD did not go through Joe Kines or Kevin Ramsey and could have found a DC then he might have faired better.

The 2001 class is a direct result of the talent Donnan assembled. Never does a coach get hired in January of 2001 when signing day is 4 weeks away get credit for that signing class, not I put he held on to it.

I am not bashing Richt but I certainly understand the viewpoint of giving Donnan credit. Again Richt walked in to a talent rich team. He was able to bank roll his early results thanks to Donnan into ongoing successful recruiting classes.

Any chance you will loosen up a bit and coach a little more to win instead of coaching to not lose? For example… Auburn 2010, minute and a half to go in the 2nd quarter with a time-out and AJ Green hot… why not attempt to drive the field and light a fire with your team? Or in the bowl game with 4th and 2 on the 2 in the 1st quarter… why not go for it? what’s to lose? It’s not jersey changes or cheap gimmicks that fire these guys up… it’s calling gutsy plays and taking some chances that aren’t “by the book” to light a fire in your team because you trust that they will make it, they will score with a minute to go, they will convert the 4th down, they will punch it in the end zone… look at the other 4 coaches in the SEC with national championships since Richt has been here… every one of them coaches like this. They take chances, they make a gutsy play call that’s against the book. It inspires the team and instills trust in your players. But instead, we play to simply not lose… and we get our tails beat by coaches that play to win.

I am sure this question would not be one which Coach Richt would answer. I have heard that Damien Evans was rather weak AD in some areas. Rumored that Richt got involved in taking on some responsibilities which took away from his coaching. When McGarity came in all that changed and he was freed up to concentrate on his main job. He did a great job putting this class together and he seems more focused and intense.
Any thoughts on this since many of your posts are thoughtful and make sense. I am an old bulldog from class of 69. Erk and Dooley were a helluva of a combo. Hope Richt and Gantham do the same.

I think I have figured out why the unemployment rate is so high in the SE. This has got to be the capital of the world in unemployed wanna be comedians. Just look at the blog comments from some of those people on here and you will have all the proof, you need. Sad People.
Maybe we need to start a club, called “So you wanna be a comedian”, so these people could once again feel revelant , although to who I don’t know”.

Question for CMR. In the past few years UGA hasn’t had blocked many punts. It seems we play teams safe to keep them from faking the punt more often than not. With some of the Dream Team recruits we are getting some stellar speed and quickness. Does CMR see UGA returning to a more agressive punt blocking team like we were in 2002 to 2005 since we now have this talent?
Thanks, Charlie

The whole cutting edge football thing has been overblown IMO. I am hoping that richt has decided to play a lot of “man up” football.

Points to ponder:

1.) Hired an OL coach that teaches straight line blocking, no more zone crap
2.) Size of the RB’s and FB’s
3.) Smart QB who would be a lot better if he had smaller stats and more wins by being a manager of a running football team
4.) Drop the defensive PPG and watch the Bobo head on a plateer comments disappear
5.) New S&C program focused on endurance

No arrests tell me that somebody has laid down the law. i’m glad to see it.

Hopefully it will translate into wins

Chip,

Do any incoming OL look like they will be able to make significant contributions (the next Trinton Sturdivant, or Kenarious Gates). Watts Dantzler appears to have the size based on what he is listed at. And it would make us breath a little easier if any of these guys can compete for pt.

I think they are relying on 3-4 freshman making some contributions just like any other team, finer.

We’ve got a highly regarded RB trying to get his yards just like he would anywhere. Need a couple of O-lineman to be able to substitute on occation, and there are a few others that are intriguing at various positions.

How is that any different than your school?

Usually takes 4 or 5 games for freshmen rb’s and wr’s to “get it”.

Usually takes 1 or 2 years for O-linemen to “get it”.

That may take too long for Richt.

“get it” as in being a reliable starters in the SEC? Obviously. Nobody is asking them to be that game 1.

I believe SC had a freshman or two get playing time over the years have they not. And I’m pretty sure with some of the ??? in your front 7 and changes on your o-line, there will be some asked to contribute.

As I said, same as any team in the league.

I’ve suspected for some time that one of the biggest problems with our running game as been our blocking technique. Although I realize that we are a pro-style offense that uses play action, drive blocking is not an ugly word. I watched in horror at the Louisiana game last year as an undersized defensive line gave us way more trouble than it should. Every play, their defensive line initiated contact in the neutral zone, even though we knew the snap count. How about we apply some simple principals of physics. When a d-lineman gets jarred from a massive hit and has a helmet in his grill to block his view, it’s tough to make a play. Let’s knock somebodies head off!

Coach Mark Richt, I am from south GA and would like to know what the UGA did to make the AJC so mad to publish so many negative comment about the school.I understand they must be a democratic owned paper by the way they twist the news around to make everything that UGA does seem so bad. What did UGA do to deserve such negativity in this paper. If you have a set you would ask him his opinion on this!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s that time of the year. All UGA fans are spewing about how they are gonna win the SECE and beat Fl. Dream on. UGA want even have enough O.L to line up, much less practice against the D.L. Translation, UGA’S D.L will suffer because they want be lining up against quality competition. But doesn’t really matter, FL. is loaded on the D.L with 4 (5) star recuits that will be soph. this year. UGA raves about one (5) star in Drew, but Fl. always has 4 or 5 of those compared to UGA’s one. And don’t look now but our only competition for the top players in the state of Ga. for 2012 is Bama. We don’t even have to worry about RIcht &BoBo. After we pick up the top player in Jenkins, that will only make 3 of the top 11 players in the state that will be wearing orange&blue. Pretty sad for a 1st year coach that has never coached a game in the SEC to outrecruit the dean of SEC coaches in his own back yard. Wait until he cleans his clock in Jax. in Nov. I hope you keep Richt & Bobo forever, because these weakass coaches will never beat the Gators again. Weiss vs.BoBo, that is funny. The domination will continue in Nov. Can’t wait

Tori,

How can you even question CMR’s integrity or ethics. It is obvious that you don’t even know what those two words mean. As for his recruiting players with intelligence; Just about anybody on the UGA football team was recruited by almost everybody else in the SEC and other colleges as well. Are you saying that football coaches all over missed out on these guys and therefore the same lack of integrity or ethics applies to all of these coaches? Seriously, go get your lunch money from your folks and get to school.

I believe that the UGA backfield has lacked production these last couple of years because of the switch at the postion coach there. Correct me if I’m wrong but, I believe WR coach Tony Ball was the RB’s back when UGA had Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown. That year our O-line may have been average at best, but when u got athletes like Moreno that make people miss and turn negative plays into positive plays, sometimes the lack of O-Line can go unnoticed. I believe that Coach McClendon may not have been battle tested as a runningback coach and may be part of the reason we’ve been sub par at the runningback spot. I just don’t understand why McClendon dosen’t coach receivers seeing that he was a fairly servicable one for Mark Richt in 05′ & 06. Richt took a chance with McClendon and with Bobo (1st OC job) which is workin out pretty well. Mark Richt likes to give people chances and thats good but, if you want to win National Championships you need the best coaches from top to bottom. So do you believe that the position coach itself has been an issuse rather than the o-line?

That's right

Question 2: Georgia is letting Branden Smith and Isaiah Crowell both wear the number 1 because they promised them both in recruiting. However, there has been some discussion that one of them possibly change to No. 3 so that they could be on offense at the same time. Otherwise coaches say they’ll just work around it. . . .
