What do you want to know as Georgia Bulldogs open camp today?

Athens — Georgia is holding its annual preseason “Media Day” later today. After lunch in the new multipurpose facility at Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall, we’ll get a 30-minute, question-and-answer session with head coach Mark Richt followed by a session with selected players.

Actually, us media types don’t get to select the players. We don’t know just yet which players will be made available to us. But we do know none of them will be true freshmen. They’re off limits for interviews until August 11th.

You can expect the usual team leaders to be in attendance. Just guessing here but I suspect guys like quarterback Aaron Murray, linebacker Christian Robinson, center Ben Jones, defensive back Brandon Boykin, wide receiver Tavarres King, tight end Orson Charles and tackle Cordy Glenn will be there. Doubtful big John Jenkins will be available but it’d be nice if he was.

Anyway, I need your help. I’m looking for some feedback. There are a lot of obvious storylines heading into the 2011 season and we’ll definitely get to all of those. But I’d like to hear what are some of the other subjects you’d like me to cover.  Is there a particular player you’d like learn more about or a specific question you’d like me to ask Richt or a certain player or one of the assistants? Is there something you’ve always been curious about but was never sure who to ask? What would you ask if you were in attendance?

Well, now’s your chance. Let me know and, if it’s a reasonable request, I’ll try my best to get an answer for you.

After today’s media session, Georgia will conduct it’s first of 29 preseason practices. It’s supposed to start around 4:30 p.m. Last time I checked the heat index is supposed to be around 107 degrees then. So I know one of my questions is going to be what kind of special precautions are they making for the extreme heat.

But that’s just me. What would you ask?

Ask Richt if he has considered putting shoe lifts in Murray’s shoes to help out with not being able to see over the O and D lines.

Ask Coach Richt if he thinks he has earned his multi-million dollar salary, with nothing to show for it but a Fulmer Cup and a team that hasn’t been relevant in several years.

Here’s a question: Why are so many gator fans on UGA blogs everyday? I’m guessing they were huge fans in the 70’s and 80’s when they got handled every year so they’re enjoying this run before it comes to an end. I don’t blame you…

Nothing to show for it?

I know we haven’t been good lately but he has won 2 SEC titles in 10 years.

nothing to show for it would be Ray Goff=ZERO TITLES
Jim Donnan=ZERO TITLES

And I think the dumbest statement ever is saying a coach won with someone else’s players. Donnan had been gone 4 years by the 2005 season alone.

The stupidity on these blogs amazes me sometimes.

Say what you like about Donnan but those last two classes wond the 2002 SEC title and got CMR off to a damn fast start in Athens. Those two classes where loaded.

You can make the case that top to bottom those are the most solid classes UGA has had since 2000. Richt has a home run at times but thus far more misses than hits since 2005 in recruiting. If it was not the case we would not have the record the past two seasons.

So while none of us liked Donnan we are fools to deny the impact he had long after he left UGA. The cupboard for CMR was far from bare when he landed in Athens.

I would like to ask Mr.Richt why did he change the DC and ignore the OC. I ask this because our total defense out rank his total offense immensely. How will this season be any different from the previous seasons from an offensive standpoint?

Does Coach Richt see himself on the hotseat this season? Will that make him take more risks in certain situations or continue to play it safe? I think we play too safe some times like kicking a field goal in the bowl game rather than going for it on 4th and inches.

Question 1: Will John Jenkins and Kwame Geathers be on the field at the same time?

Question 2: Why would you allow Branden Smith and Crowell wear the same number? It prevents them from being on the field at the same time, thereby limiting the ability to have 2 explosive players on the field at the same time.

Question 3: Do you anticipate Jarvis Jones missing any games?

Question 4: Will you allow the freshmen come in and play if they are contributing?

Question 5: Will you allow Grantham to be himself?

Ask Coach if he has a favorite little dog to pet on game day. Ask him if that little dog will get some carries at running back in the Dome. Ask him if that little dog’s a$$ was painted white at his direction before the big game in Shreveport. Ask him if he wants to sit on my block of ice if his seat gets any hotter. Have a nice day.

Donnan didn’t coach them, Richt did

Shockley was clearly a Richt recruit. Several of the 2001 class were Richt recruits

Donnan had a lousy DC. Richt hired BVG and he won a lot of games for Richt

We all should hope that Grantham can equal that success.

PLEASE ASK: Coach Richt- when we are 4 and inches anywhere in the red zone- are you going to finally go for it instead of kicking field goals????? Seems like that would send a huge message to the players. I would have rather lost 10-0 to UCF than to be a sissy and kick the two FGs we did. Seems that sent a message to them as well…..we dont think we can get inches on you guys…..SAD

With the number of UGA players that have made it to the NFL over the last 10 years and the ranking of our recruiting classes, does CMR feel that his staff has grossly under coached his teams over the years. And what changes in the mental preparation has the coahcing staff made to assure that this team thinks on and operates on a championship level?

Can we expect to see new wrinkles in the offensive game plan? When you have a Stafford, Moreno or AJ, you afford to line up and win by execution. would it be to our advantage to mix things up so teams are less certain about our intentions? It could be as simple as runn ing the same plays from formations we haven’t shown before

Go Dawgs!

DawginLex,

Clearly Richt coached them, but he had to have the talent to achieve the end results. Who provided the talent?

Shcokley was the first CMR recruit. At what point did he actually step on the field in Athens as the starter? And why?

A. 2005 because a Jim Donnan recruited QB reminded CMR so much of himself in the way he played the game and lead the team.

If JD did not go through Joe Kines or Kevin Ramsey and could have found a DC then he might have faired better.

The 2001 class is a direct result of the talent Donnan assembled. Never does a coach get hired in January of 2001 when signing day is 4 weeks away get credit for that signing class, not I put he held on to it.

I am not bashing Richt but I certainly understand the viewpoint of giving Donnan credit. Again Richt walked in to a talent rich team. He was able to bank roll his early results thanks to Donnan into ongoing successful recruiting classes.

@SSIgator,

My one question for you:

If you are a die hard gator fan, then why would you care if he loses 5, 6, or 7 games? It seems to me that you should be happy that he’s at UGA and not FL, and therefore you should be wishing that he stays at UGA for another 20 years or more. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense for you to add to the already constant barrage of criticisms.

Why has the offense been so predictable and conservative? I call it the xbox offense…only so many plays in the arsenal. Even when a play works, Bobo never seems to return to it. His play calling lacks punch and trust in his entire team.

Why is Murray so far away from the ball carrier during play action fakes? He doesn’t hide the ball effectively…no real deception there.

2. Does Richt feel like a thief for accepting a salary last year. After all he is such a “good guy”.
3. Why didnt he resign after the UCF bowl game. It was the only honorable thing to do. If we were in Japan he would have had to run on his sword.

Any chance you will loosen up a bit and coach a little more to win instead of coaching to not lose? For example… Auburn 2010, minute and a half to go in the 2nd quarter with a time-out and AJ Green hot… why not attempt to drive the field and light a fire with your team? Or in the bowl game with 4th and 2 on the 2 in the 1st quarter… why not go for it? what’s to lose? It’s not jersey changes or cheap gimmicks that fire these guys up… it’s calling gutsy plays and taking some chances that aren’t “by the book” to light a fire in your team because you trust that they will make it, they will score with a minute to go, they will convert the 4th down, they will punch it in the end zone… look at the other 4 coaches in the SEC with national championships since Richt has been here… every one of them coaches like this. They take chances, they make a gutsy play call that’s against the book. It inspires the team and instills trust in your players. But instead, we play to simply not lose… and we get our tails beat by coaches that play to win.

Realizing we are not in the same league as the elite SEC teams such as UF, Bama and LSU, do you feel the results reached over the past 4-5 years reflects what should be expected for a dawg fan.I personally think expectations for most are unrealistic at UGA. We are clearly not an top tier SEC program. Occasionally, when the leagure is down we will win the east and possibly the sec (’02 and ‘05),

If I was Richt, I wouldn’t say much about anything. Any coach worth his salt certainly isn’t going to tip his hand and give opposing coaches anything to go by. That’s why most practices are closed. Plus, we need to let Chip do his job and not do it for him. There’s been ad nauseum discussion on just about everything for months about UGA football. And half of these posts are just the same infantile drivel that we see everyday. I’d love some real football news (and discussion,) but I’m not holding my breath that we’re gonna get it from the AJC.
