One of the things I’ve learned covering college football all these years is numbers — as in jersey numbers — are of great interest to fans. So to hold you over until I get through with today’s press conferences, I figured I’d share the numbers the new players will be wearing this season.
I also found it interesting that nobody leaped to grab the numbers left available with the departures of Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Sophomore walkon Luis Capella snagged Caleb King’s No. 4 and Ealey’s 3 remains unclaimed.
So here ya go:
1 — TB Isaiah Crowell
5 — DB Damian Swann
6 — NG John Jenkins (that’s no typo)
6 — QB Michael Tamburo (transfer from Boise State)
8 — DB Chris Sanders
16 — QB Christian LeMay
20 — TB Brandon Harton
24 — TB Ken Malcome (just noteworthy because he chose to keep it)
26 — WR Malcolm Mitchell
27 — DB Nick Marshall
29 — LB Jarvis Jones
31 — WR Chris Conley
37 — DB Devin Bowman
39 — DB Corey Moore
43 — DQ Quintavious Harrow
47 — LB Ray Drew
51 — LB Ramik Wilson
52 — LB Amarlo Herrera
58 — LB Sterling Bailey
59 — OL Nathan Theus
60 — C Ben Jones (not a newcomer but changed from 61 to honor his late father)
61 — OL David Andrews
63 — OL Xzavier Ward
66 — OL Hunter Long
76 — OL Zach DeBell
78 — OL Watts Dantzler
84 — WR Sanford Seay
86 — WR Justin Scott-Wesley
87 — TE Jay Rome
92 — LB Dexter Morant
96 — NG Mike Thornton

I love it when a D-lineman wears a low number. John Jenkins is going to make that number legendary. Watch and see.

Both are #1. They can wear the same number as long as they are not on the field together at the same time.

Thanks,

Anyone else on here wishing Dog coaches will come up with a package for Nick Marshall similar to Branden Smith? When Branden was in you pretty well knew what was coming. Imagine the threat of having a Marshall back there who can throw it a mile, or take off running, or handoff. Could be a nightmare scenario for defenses.

I dont see CMR using Nick Marshall that much on O. Nick will be a shutdown corner and key special teams player for us. I think that CMR will use him in senerios just like Brandon Smith has been utilized in the past. From time-to-time they will use him as a reciever on an end-around and as a decoy. I see a lot more slip screens and WO screens for 2011 to get Malcolm and Wooten the ball in the open field. GATA!

Chip,
Question for Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn at the PR. Do Ben and Cordy feel like they are stronger and more physical this year than in the last couple years going into pratice? How would Ben rate his strentgh and conditioning this year on a scale of 1-to-10 with ten being the best shape? How would Cordy rate his strentgh and conditioning this year on a scale of 1-to-10 with ten being the best shape?
Just trying to get an idea if we have became stronger and better conditioned on the O-Line.
Thanks, Charlie

In regards to Crowell and Smith both being number 1… I really don’t like howwe handicap ourselves in making sure that niether player can be on the field at the same time. That’s just a silly thing to do over what symbol the paint on your jersey looks like. That’s just a bad idea to me. It should be Smith’s choice since he was here first.

I do like the idea of #6 on goal line situations. Definitely couldn’t hurt to run 247 lb. behind 350lb. Try to stop that Boise with your 260lb!

How about we put Nick Marshall at one of the starting cornerback positions…put Branden Smith at nickel, and Brandon Boykin would be our other corner. That would be great. I’ve heard that Marshall has shutdown written all over him.
CB: Nick Marshall
Nickel CB: Branden Smith
FS: Sanders Commings
SS: Bacarri Rambo
CB: Brandon Boykin

This blog is hilarious. UGA fans getting so concerned about jersey numbers for freshman. I would be more concerned about if they can actually contribute or not, who cares what their damn jersey #s are. And woulndn’t get too worried about Drew and #47, if he is half the player pollack was that would be amazing.

I hope you guys are correct about Marshall, but I haven’t read where any of the players were mentioning him in passing workouts. I watched him dismember my hometeam in the playoffs last year and he is an incredible athlete, but his coverage skills didn’t wow me. He had a tough time with our Zack Walker in coverage. To his credit, he was the only corner I watched attempt to cover him 1on 1 all year. His speed and ball skills were incredible. He had the potential, but he was really never challenged by elite talent in high school on defense.
