It’s always a numbers game for Georgia’s newcomers

One of the things I’ve learned covering college football all these years is numbers — as in jersey numbers — are of great interest to fans. So to hold you over until I get through with today’s press conferences, I figured I’d share the numbers the new players will be wearing this season.

I also found it interesting that nobody leaped to grab the numbers left available with the departures of Washaun Ealey and Caleb King. Sophomore walkon Luis Capella snagged Caleb King’s No. 4 and Ealey’s 3 remains unclaimed.

So here ya go:

1 — TB Isaiah Crowell

5 — DB Damian Swann

6 — NG John Jenkins (that’s no typo)

6 — QB Michael Tamburo (transfer from Boise State)

8 — DB Chris Sanders

16 — QB Christian LeMay

20 — TB Brandon Harton

24 — TB Ken Malcome (just noteworthy because he chose to keep it)

26 — WR Malcolm Mitchell

27 — DB Nick Marshall

29 — LB Jarvis Jones

31 — WR Chris Conley

37 — DB Devin Bowman

39 — DB Corey Moore

43 — DQ Quintavious Harrow

47 — LB Ray Drew

51 — LB Ramik Wilson

52 — LB Amarlo Herrera

58 — LB Sterling Bailey

59 — OL Nathan Theus

60 — C Ben Jones (not a newcomer but changed from 61 to honor his late father)

61 — OL David Andrews

63 — OL Xzavier Ward

66 — OL Hunter Long

76 — OL Zach DeBell

78 — OL Watts Dantzler

84 — WR Sanford Seay

86 — WR Justin Scott-Wesley

87 — TE Jay Rome

92 — LB Dexter Morant

96 — NG Mike Thornton

I hope you guys are correct about Marshall, but I haven’t read where any of the players were mentioning him in passing workouts. I watched him dismember my hometeam in the playoffs last year and he is an incredible athlete, but his coverage skills didn’t wow me. He had a tough time with our Zack Walker in coverage. To his credit, he was the only corner I watched attempt to cover him 1on 1 all year. His speed and ball skills were incredible. He had the potential, but he was really never challenged by elite talent in high school on defense.
