THE TEN AT 10:
1. It looks like Georgia is getting close to wrapping up its investigation into the eligibility issues facing football player Jarvis Jones and basketball player Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. Athletic Director Greg McGarity told reporters covering the Metro Atlanta Bulldog Club on Monday that UGA’s internal inquiry could be completed “before the end of this week.”
That’s the good news. The bad news is the Bulldogs will still have to wait for the NCAA to make a ruling. That tends to take a while. Georgia must first turn over its findings to the SEC office, which then forwards it to the NCAA, which will get back to UGA with a ruling after it has thoroughly reviewed the case.
Nevertheless, the Bulldogs remain hopeful the situation will get resolved before the season opener against Boise State on Sept. 3. Last year’s eligibility issues facing wide receiver A.J. Green did not get resolved until the second week of the season.
There is some hope that Jones can maintain his eligibility. According to the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer, Tony Adams, the man who paid for two round-trip flights to Los Angeles for Jones and his legal .guardian, Shelley Stephens, had been in a relationship with Stephens for some time. So there may have been a preexisting relationship that made paying for the trip permissible.
2. There has been all kinds of gossip this summer regarding Isaiah Crowell and how he might have be faring during Georgia’s off-season workouts. But nobody can be sure what’s truth or fiction since only players and strength coaches are privy to what goes on. The players, it seems, are very protective of the ballyhooed freshman tailback.
Probably the most enlightening comments on the subject came from quarterback Aaron Murray this past week at SEC Football Media Days. Murray’s remarks lead one to believe that work ethic may have been an issue early on, but that Crowell’s teammates made sure it didn’t persist.
Said Murray: “Oh yeah, we sat him down. One of the first weeks he was here, me, Ben [Jones] and Christian [Robinson] and a couple of other guys went to his dorm, took him outside, talked to him and ran him through some plays. Then we told him, ‘Hey, we’re here for you. We’re going to push you on this and on that but, in the end, we’re going to make sure you’re ready to go.’ He definitely took that well and has been working hard.”
Asked why they may have felt compelled to address Crowell in such a way, Murray said, “We wanted to make sure he knew we’re here for him and anything he wanted, we’re a call away. We’re excited about getting him out there and getting him to learn the playbook.”
Virtually every other report that has come out about Crowell has been glowing. His teammates have raved about the athletic potential Crowell has displayed in 7-on-7 work, pass skel and conditioning workouts.
“Oh, yeah, it’s a lot of talent,” Murray said. “Isaiah has all the speed and quickness in the world.”
Said Jones: “Very quick, very explosive. He can break it and he’s got power, too. I can’t wait to see how he is in pads because I heard he’s ‘The Man.’ I hope he is because there’s going to be some big-play opportunities.”
3. Speaking of summer workouts, the grueling regimen the players have been exposed to under new strength and conditioning coordinator Joe Tereshinski is already the stuff of legend. The Bulldogs have run more than they have in years as Tereshinski’s philosophy is to train to “win the fourth quarter” by being the better conditioned team. This has meant miles and miles of timed running at the crack of dawn and in the heat of the afternoons.
But it appears the players have gotten used to the routine and actually have started to enjoy it.
“It’s amazing how people’s bodies have transformed and how people are getting into shape,” senior cornerback Brandon Boykin said. “Everyday we’re running around the track, doing speed drills, running hills, tires, sleds, everything you can think of. We’re doing it all.”
The highlight of the week is when the players run from Butts-Mehre Heritage Hall down Lumpkin Street to Sanford Stadium and back to the football complex via East Campus Road.
“We do a morning run, usually on Fridays, where we run to the stadium, run through the stadium and then run back,” Boykin said. “It’s pretty nice to run with your team throughout campus. You’ve got your shirt off and girls are looking at you. Everybody wants to be seen and see the hard work they’ve put in. That’s actually something we look forward to on Friday.”
4. Coach Mark Richt has resurrected two-a-days for preseason camp this year. The Bulldogs scrapped them last year but will practice twice on Tuesday, Aug. 9, and again on Saturday, Aug. 13. Richt, following the trend of many teams in college football, scrapped them last year. Richt also said Georgia will hold several full-contact practices.
5. Richt told reporters before Monday’s Bulldog Club gathering that freshman eligibility issues for signees Devin Bowman and Kent Turene are still “up in the air.”
6. Three quotes from Richt at SEC Media Days last week told me there he is definitely re-invigorated for the coming season:
7. Recently-graduated UGA All-American Harris English won the Nationwide Tour’s Children’s Hospital Invitational golf tournament on Sunday at the Ohio State Golf Club’s Scarlet Course. English became the third Bulldog to win a Nationwide event this year — joining Russell Henley and Erik Compton — and just the third amateur ever to win on American golf’s No. 2 tour.
English finished at 14-under-par 270. Since English has maintained his amateur status, the $144,000 first-place prize went to the second-place finisher. Earlier this month, English won the Southern Amateur in Palm Harbor, Fla. He also recently was chosen as a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar for the second straight year by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
8. This one slipped by me this summer: Ray Lamb, the longtime director of high school relations for Georgia and legendary high school coach, retired last month. I first met Coach Lamb back when he fashioned tiny little Commerce High into a perennial football powerhouse. But I really got to know him on the sidelines of UGA’s Woodruff Practice Fields as he’d share stories about football and life as the Bulldogs’ practices were raged on. Lamb’s sons Hal (Calhoun High) and Bobby (Mercer University) followed him into coaching and now he has grandsons that are playing high school ball. So it seems Ray will still be involved in the game fulltime. UGA’s Loran Smith wrote a nice column about Lamb on georgiadogs.com.
9. Richt is asking for prayers for the 4-year-old daughter of linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti. Kasyn Olivadotti has Leukemia and has been in the hospital for more than a month.
10. THIS & THAT: Here’s a news release from Daktronics Inc. about the new LED scoreboard installed at Sanford Stadium.Morgan Leleux, a pole vaulter from New Iberia, La., who signed with Georgia earlier this year, took the gold medal at Pan American Junior Track & Field Championships in Miramar, Fla., this past weekend. Leleux cleared 13-7 1/4. Next she’ll compete in the USATF National Junior Outdoor Championships on Friday. She’ll enroll at UGA in the fall.

NCAA knows the facts of this case. They surely have access to the full investigation by a (presumably) competent police force. There is no excuse for not rendering a decision sooner rather than later. NCAA MO is arachnoidal. They inject a paralyzing poison and wait to devour their prey at their leisure.

Seems Joe T. took a page from Coach Herb Brooks book. Herbie always stressed to his 1980 Gold medal team that “the legs feed the wolf” and he always told his guys “we may not be the most talented team at Lake Placid but we will be the best conditioned team.” That turned out pretty good diddn’t it? Vince Lombardi said: “fatigue makes cowards of us all.” Seems Joe T. channeled Herb and Vince when he was conceiving his training regimin.

Thanks for the recognition Altamaha. The “informal” leadership provided by players can’t be overstated. At this point doesn’t matter what the coaches have done in the past. It “optimistically speaking” appears that we may have a fresh start in Athens. I don’t expect “miracles” as some apparently do, just need to see some “hunger” that’s been missing for quite awhile.
Joe T’s program could be the driving force behind that “hunger”. Pain experienced, worked through, and the gain from those victory’s in training “should” equal a new passion. I think with the “lack of leadership” shown by the past few classes the Seniors may not provide the main spark. It may well come from the newer troops on the team.

I actually think Mike Bobo is a good offense coordinator and play caller and I know that I am in the minority with that opinion. There are things that I disagree with and would like to see changed/implemented, but last year the offense had a variety of problems starting with the OL playing well below their capabilities and expectations. They were supposed to be one of the top lines in the country and that really hurt our ability to have any consistancy. He also had a frosh QB that had never taken a snap and while Murray played very well last year (in my opinion), he was certainly tentative in the first 3-4 games compared to the last half of the season. Also, the AJ suspension for the first 4 games hurt the team more than just not having their best player for 4 games. It was a major distraction to say the least.
Yes, I would like to see more toss sweeps (it seems like we consistantly get 3 yards or more when we toss sweep). I’d love to see us use that at least once a quarter. I’d like to see fewer long bombs thrown particulary in a 2nd and 10 or 2nd and 8 situation (usually resulting in a 3rd and 10 or a 3rd and 8 when that low percentage play goes incomplete). I like the long ball when it is 2nd and 3 or 1st and 5 because of an offsides, but it just seems like the last two years we throw deep when a 5 yard gain would help keep the drive going.
Like all fans, I have my favorite plays that we call and some that I think are ill advised, but I think this guy knows what he is doing.

It does bother me to hear that already a very young man, CMR’s age is saying that he is “Re energized” and so “looking forward to” this or that. I am 62 and at the age of 57 decided to hang it up and do something else, after nearly 34 yrs with one firm. CMR has been at UGA for 10 full years and making $$ kazillions and is feeling re energized? Why does he feel the need to Re anything?
I was in senior management and repsonsible for around 90 employees, national Sales and the BOTTOM LINE and did not ever have that need …………..ever, until I announced my retirement at 57 and I made considerably less than CMR. Does he LOVE his job? Does he love that job at UGA?
If so, then, why the need to re anything?? A 45 or 46? Y.O. man coaching ought not to have to say these things. His mind might be elsewhere in forward mode in his faith based activities, is my fear. I have felt this for about 3 years now.

Really Chip? I would have expected better from you? I listened to Aaron’s comments and how do you get anything out of this other than they took their soon to be #1 RB out and talked to him to make sure he’s on the same page as that team captains. “Murray’s remarks lead one to believe that work ethic may have been an issue early on, but that Crowell’s teammates made sure it didn’t persist.” I expect that from Carvall, but not from you. Have to agree with how2fish. We will have an average 40-50 pounds on Boise State’s DL (assuming our front 5 stays healthy and UNSUSPENDED.) Admittedly, I’m not that familiar with Boise State’s front four on the DL, but are they really that much quicker than SEC DL’s? Many think DL is the SEC’s true advantage over other conferences? Just bigger faster more talented and deeper than the big 10, pac 12, and big 12 DL’s.
I would think that even in the air conditioned dome, we could wear out the Boise DL by running a lot of plays. Personally, I think that is the key to beating Boise State. Not time of posession, but how many offensive plays we are able to run. I’d like to see at least 70 as I think they will really start to wear down after 45-50.

Not to disagree with your point I-Dog, but isn’t number of plays run, i.e. the more you run, the longer you posses the ball? If we run enough plays we will win time of possession? Keeping the ball away from Moore can only help. IF, the Dawgs come out hungry, prepared, in condition, and motivated, I think we will kick Boise’s a$$. It’s up to us as to how well they do. We have the potential IMO, to destroy Boise. The longer we let them stay in the game the better they will play. If we come out early and establish domination, we win. Love to see the defense score a few points this year.

I really think that leadership goes in cycles. Not because there are any less good kids on the team, but just a flow of how some kids had to build it, the next group rides the wave but they know how it happened, then 2 years later nobody on the team was around to remember it wasn’t always that easy.
Look at 2001-2004, 2005(06)- 2008, as I said earlier, I’ll forever believe that the odd set of player circumstances really aggrivated the would be cycle of 2009-13.
Compounded by (a variety of) coaching related issues hitting at the worst time.
But I could very easily see a 2002 type cycle coming up.

Mobile Dawg, I don’t know about the old “come out and establish domination” theory on that game. I can’t recall the last time we did that. Or did that and held onto to it the entire game. Halftime tends to slow us down for some reason. Of course this is a new year, more seasoned QB and leadership on the team. I hope we get back to the old way of just winning and feeling like you are going to win. You remember, we are favored, we show up, we play hard all 60 and have the feeling that nothing will stop us.

I hope the running gmae is ready to go. Ball control will be needed to allow the whole team to get some much needed experience and keep the defense off the field for the majority of the game. If you can pound it out on the ground, it sets up passing plays and controls the clock. If our defense is as good as we hope they are, the offense will get plenty of opportunities to work, so I hope they can run the ball quite a bit. We don’t have a lot of experience in our RB’s, but our OL is good, but thin in backups. Hopefully, with the new S and C program in place and folks having worked in it for a few months, we will be ready to play 4 quarters, and with our D, wear down some offenses of our opponent. Our running game should come around if the guys work as a team, and help each other. We do have guys that have been with the team to show the young bucks how and what it takes.

I think the main thing with Boise is to take the battle to them..we can not finesse this bunch we have to line up and blow them off the line of scrimmage. Pound them for 4 quarters with a big OL backed up with a 220lb RB and a 270 lb FB….and a defense that keeps Mr.Moore off balance..we give him all day to throw and a lot of possessions and he will pick us apart…our best defense in this game is to keep the ball with our offense…that’s just the way I see it….

How2fish, great idea, but one thing you forgot, UGA under Richt&BooBoo are a finesee team. Always has been and always will be. Even when UGA is clicking in the running game, the brilliant BooBoo will abandon it, and start throwing the ball on 1st&2nd down. This guy is one of the worst O.C. in the SEC, and he doesn’t know what a power running attack looks like, much less how to call plays for one. All this clown knows is draw, and playaction even when the running game isn’t successful. Hate to say it, but UGA will not control the clock against B.S, even if they outweight their D.L. by 50 lbs per man. You can’t take stripes off of a zebra, and you can’t change BooBoo mentality. So, i see B.S. picking UGA apart and with Murray starting out every game like he is scared to death, waiting until the middle of the 2nd qtr. to settle down will get UGA so far behind, it will be impossible to catch up. But i do like your attitude, to bad our coaches don’t know what that attitude means.

DawgTired,
Crowell is a true freshman with a ton of talent. I’m sure he’s never had to work that hard to succeed. No surprise there. I think Murray, et al showed great leadership to not only let him know the effort that’s required, but to also let him know he is a big part of the team. Crowell seems to accept that. Get a grip! you are paying one of the biggest idiots in the NCAA coaching fraternity over $3M per year to dumb down your football program. In the last year alone, he has lost to such perennial losers as the Unviersity of Colorado and University of Central Florida. Other coaches like Petrino, Chizek, Saban, Meyer and Mullen have schooled him like a child. He is driving our program past the joke stage into the manure.
Why do you continue to support him? Because he is a Christian? There are millions of Chirstians; very few of them receive $3M per year in public unearned income.
Get a grip! Go to the optomotrist! Figure it out. If you can’t figure out something this simple, mail your diploma back to the UGA. Otherwise, do the patriotic thing and demand that they fire this fraud. Today.

RS weighs 243, Figgins weighs 272. I want to see Jenkins run in our 4th TD from the 2. We scored 30+ seven straight games last year. Our problem in most losses since BVG left has been the defense. I hope and think we will return to having a strong defense in 2011. Do you not remember all the losses when BVG was here was because of our offense sputtered and couldn’t move the ball? That is why we called for CMR to hire an OC. Do you really think that there is a team out there where all the fans agree with every offensive play call? I too wonder why we run a draw sometimes to Thomas on 3rd and 11. Bobo probably wonders how all these Dawg fans who have never coached successfully are supposed to be thrilled and awed with every call he makes. Do you think AM, as a freshman executed Bobo’s calls perfectly? Bobo produced last year. Our offense has been outscored the last few years by WM’s defense. CTG has the hauses now, let’s see.

No snoop, we don’t support him “because” he is a Christian. Although that does endear him to some of us more as a person, it doesn’t have much to do with playing a game, with a ball. We support him because he is employed as the Head Coach of our favorite college football team. And for the foreseeable future, and as much as any of us have control over it, we have figured out that if our favorite college football team is to win more games, the coach would need to be part of that. So we support his effort do do so, and are just wise enough to know that not doing so is simply a waste of time and energy. Plus most people aren’t just negative in general about things they do for enjoyment. Does that clear it up for you?

Coach Richt…I see among posters to this and other sites, two extremes. One group frequently called “Haters” want Richt fired yesterday. Another group sometime called “Koolade” drinkers look at Richt’s fine qualities and proclaim him the best coach UGA has ever had and talk about how fortunate for UGA that he is our football coach. I’m somewhere in betweem these groups and believe in accountability. As Truman said…”the buck stops here” (or in this case with Richt).
I enjoyed his early success…averaging 10 or more games a season, actually beating Florida (two times) and winning the SEC, winning against some good teams.
Given the results in recents years, one can wonder if the success of the early years should be attributed to inheiting good players, a good supporting cast, and catching the predominate SEC teams at the right time.
Coach Richt is compassionate individual with a strong will. In recent years and for whatever reason, he has been slow and reluctant (too patient)to deal with team and program problems and it’s reflected in the team records. No I have never played or coached football and cann’t imagine what is involved in running a program like UGA. But I have enjoyed a lots of football in 60 years, mostly UGA football. Hopefully, the changes he has made will work.

Mobile Dog:
Often, time of pos. and # of plays go hand in hand, but not always. If a WR or RB stays in bounds after a 5 yard gain, the clock keeps running and if the QB takes their time going with the next play it can run 30+ seconds off the clock. Do a few of those and it is a couple of minutes of poss. but only a few plays.
You tire a defense out by making them line up and tackle you, cover you, and rush the passer and most importanly with Boise… make their D line work against our OL. If you run a 4 yard carry and the RB goes out of bounds and then line up quick and run another for 7 yards and the clock stops for the 1st down, it doesn’t take much time off the clock, but you are making them defend at least another 3 plays.
I just don’t want to see us chuck it down the field all day and have 3-5 play drives, especially if we don’t score. I want to see 10+ play scoring drives and make Boise defend over and over.
