Hoover, Ala. — Sportswriters covering the SEC picked Georgia to finish second in the SEC’s Eastern Division and selected nine Bulldogs for the all-conference team.
Six Georgia players were named first-team All-SEC, including sophomore quaterback Aaron Murray, junior tight end Orson Charles, senior offensive tackle Cordy Glenn, senior place-kicker Blair Walsh, senior punter Drew Butler and senior kick returner Brandon Boykin. Senior center Ben Jones. senior defensive end DeAngelo Tyson and Boykin were named to the second team.
Alabama was picked to win the league, getting 98 points to finish ahead of LSU (29), Arkansas (18), South Carolina (14), Georgia (4), Florida (2) and Ole Miss (2).
The Gamecocks received 114 votes to win the East while Georgia had the second-most with 38. Florida got 12 votes.
Alabama was the West selection 111-30 over LSU. Arkansas was picked by 23 writers.
Take these results with a grain of salt. The sportswriters have picked the winner correctly just four times since SEC expansion in 1992.
This fact does not seem to have escaped Alabama coach Nick Saban.
“Well, it means nothing bascially,” Saban said of his team being the overwhleming favorite win the league. “We have a lot of challenges to face. We’re just interested in playing to our capabilities. I’m not a prognosticator. I can’t do that. I don’t understand how y’all do it.”

I am fine with that. I could not imagine us being picked by the writers to win the East. I do not care what happens but we cannot let a team led by Petrino be better than us year in and out. I still cannot pull for Petrino. Guy is a scumbag.

No way USC handles the pressure. “Take these results with a grain of salt. The sportswriters have picked the winner correctly just four times since SEC expansion in 1992.”

Once again, this boils down to someone’s opinion so that and four bucks will buy me a Starbucks coffee. Chip, you said that the sportswriters have only picked correctly four times since 1992, can you list their picks for the last few years along with the actual winners? Just a curiosity thing.

It sure is embarrassing for a little dog that’s trying to be a good mascot to see that some of his running back buddies are in so much trouble all the time. The answer is to be a running back myself. By the time the NCAA says it is okay for Coach Richt to talk on the phone in his F-150 again, I will be ready to play. By the time Coach Grantham gets into the doughnuts I will have scored a touchdown. Being a temporary running back may be just what I needed.

I don’t see 2nd place a all, we got 5 star recruits at every position and possibly the best recruiting class in the country coming in. We will be bigger, faster and more athletic than every team we play, except for the sec championship game. We may have lost Green, Durham, Dent…..but we don’t rebuild we reload. We’re gonna be better at rb even without our top 2 rushers. No doubt we had the most talented 6-7 team in the country!

LOL, you may win the blogs when no games are played, but you’re lucky to be middle of the pack sec, what was your confrence record last year? No problem with this…we’ve got too many question marks for that many cynical sportswriters to go out on a limb with us.
As for Petrino, what we keep forgetting is that the ‘man’ is where he belongs – ‘coaching’ at the college level. This way he can brow-beat, threaten and intimidate ‘kids’ into doing what he wants…the epitome of a Napoleonic leadership style. They’re in constant fear of losing their scholarship and will do anything they’re told. With professional athletes he had to ‘deal’ with men which meant leading because he was a true leader that knew what he was doing and could inspire men to perform like men through pride of accomplishment rather than fear. Those that are successful at the college level but can’t cut it in the pros are all like that – not so sure about Spurrier, don’t see him acting like a ‘little dictator’ with anybody.
Got say, love him or hate him, Steve Spurrier is more fun to listen to in an interview than any of ‘em. Felt good about Mark Richt’s ‘presentation’ and was reminded that the Dooley’s raised a gooden’ in Derek.
Nice to hear that the Mitchell kid may be ‘part’ of the answer to one of our question marks – who’s gonna stretch the field and take up some of the slack with the departure of Green and Durham.

@17 – 3 quick defensive history lessons the new Gator coach was DC at Texas last year had been in place a while and all the players on last years team he recruited. Texas like UGA lost 7 games last year with a “proven” scheme and players to fit that scheme. UGA rolled a new DC and a new D scheme…we lost 7 games TWO of the by 28 or more points..Texas lost 7 games SIX of them by 28 or more points and the other one by 24….still want to moan about our D??

SC is the team to beat until someone knocks them off. They will be stout this year. Dawgs have to be ready to go when they come to town!

Florida is paying for the 2-3 years where it seemingly returned 19-20 starters each year. Every school in the SEC and schools like FSU, S.Florida, Miami used the depth of Florida against them and now Florida is paying for that. Tough problem to have, but I dont feel to damn sorry for them.

By the end of the year John Jenkins & Jarvis Jones will be on some All SEC Team defense list barring some kind of injury or academic casualty (maybe even 1st Team). Ogletree may end up there too. Our defense will be better than the SEC Media is given it credit for. Now as far as the offense, all bets are off and personally I am bit worried, especially if one of our OL get hurt.

This is dumbest poll I have ever read. If Murray is the #1 QB in this conference then the SEC has no quarterbacking talent. Garcia is at least a year ahead of Murray and vastly superior.
Its clear also that there is very little confidence in South Carolina and maybe thats the way it should be.
Murray would play backup on approx. one-fourth of Div 1 teams.

Carolina won’t succumb to pressure because Marcus Lattimore is the best player in the COUNTRY! Carolina’s recordall time agianst UGA is irrelevant as UGA was (and I emphasize WAS) a traditonal power mos the last 100 yrs, while SC has tradionally been awful. I am almost 50 yrs old, and been following UGA/SC football games for the last 25 yrs and I have seen most of the 15 wins over UGA in those 25 yrs. We always played Dawgs tough (and occasionally won) even when we were outclassed talent wise. Now SC is the talented team and should beat UGA! I am nervous being the favorite, but heck, that goes with being talented. God bless Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier as they turned a loser into a quality program. Georgia will once again produce a mediocre football team and probably place 2nd or 3rd in the SEC East. I think some tough D1-AA conferences could compete with the SEC East, what a horrific division that is. Auburn will probably fall short of a 10 win season despite losing all of our starters on the O-Line with the exception of BMose. In retrospec I think that Auburn is going to turn some heads and prove some haters wrong. Gotta love Mark Ricky but lets me honest the guy can’t develop talent worth squat. The dude can’t even recruit his own state anymore because the tigers are coming in there and just snagging athletes right and left. S. Carolina never has been known for offense and still won’t be even under Spurrier. If they win the East it will be because of their defense. Tired of hearing about Marcus Lattimore and Stephen Garcia. Alshon Jefferey is the only player that has my respect on that offense. Garcia 20 TD’s 14 INT’s, won’t be surprised if he’s benched at halftime of game 2 in Athens. Lattimore had good freshman season and has great hands, but we’ll see if he can do it again with a target on his back.

And don’t blame it on talent, because when Coach Richt was the Offensive Cordinator at Florida State they beat Steve Spurrier 8 times lost 4 and tied 1, I’m not saying UGA is going to win this year that remains to be seen, but sometimes you have a coach that comes along that just has your number, and so far Coach Richt has had Spurrier’s number, more often than not.

“No way USC handles the pressure”
Wishful thinking…that SC team is returning a ton of players who went into the Swamp and drilled Florida for the SEC East championship when ALL the UGA homers at the AJC and SportsNite were relishing in another big UF win.
Unfortunately, that team has returning players who have been thru the wars and the pressure of holding on to the SEC title last year.
In 2011 the positions of these two teams are completely reversed as SC is filling its few holes with players who were younger experienced returnees from last season while UGA is waiting on the arrival of Juco players and the next wunderkids from HS to fill out their roster.
Amazing what has happened between the two schools.

We are not thin a RB, we lost our top two tailbacks from last year, but I don’t think too many UGA fans wanted to see them run the ball this season anyway. It’s been about Crowell and Malcome, now its about Crowell, Malcome and Samuel (will be a great pass blocker… all I’m looking for him to do). O-line is thin but we have our starters, two who are highly regarded and plenty of experience thier (the youth will fill the depth….6 o-linemen coming in the fall and the best will standout and fill the depth, the rest will be redshirted). As far as defense goes if we keep improving like we did last year and with a true NT Grantham can finally open up his defense, time will tell.

UGA finished 6-7 in that “horrible” SEC East? So I don’t know what you are blathering on about.
It is simply fact that alot of UGA fans do not want to hear but UGA is reduced to crowing about incoming a JUCO player and high school recruits to fill huge holes from a horrid team last season.
If you want to shield your eyes from the reality that SC returns a host of seasoned players on both sides of the ball along with two consensus ALL-Americans in the Lattimore kid and the WR Jeffries. Looking at their roster it struck me that the back up to Lattimore for this season was the starter for them two seasons ago and that even though he might be a little nuts off the field, Garcia has wins against UGA, Bama, UT, UF, & Clemson.
So what is the level of the UGA program? How did the mighty UGA not just dominate the “awful” SEC East last season? Want to explain?

Good lord, you have to be a newbie, the wild delusions around here have been dispelled and ousted.
UGA lost not only there top tailback from last season but, in Ealey, their leading rusher for the past TWO years. Sure he was never the Hershel which many UGA fans pretended him to be but he was better than any of the other stiffs on the roster. In fact, Samuel was so far outclassed that the staff sent him to the scout team on defense.
It is a wonder how just a couple of months changes things, in the spring the delusional UGA fans were touting Ealey and King both as better than the Lattimore kid or Trent at Bama, now they were “cancers” and “hacks” standing in the way of the new Hershel who was hiding on the scout team defense.

We have have a pass blocker Richard Samuel, an inside back Boo Malcome, a big play back Crowell and a Scat back Carlton Thomas (whom I think should be at receiver anyway). Have to agree with the polls here.
SC is the team to beat in the East. Let’s see if Lattimore can follow-up his awesome freshman performance. Their added challenge is a tough western conference schedule (Auburn, Miss. State, Arkansas.)
Georgia has a shot but also has obvious, and long discussed, thin/questionable areas. They need to prove they can put it all together and get back on top.
Don’t count Florida out, but they are a bit of a long shot. (1) Brantley has to do better under the Weis pro-style attack than he did with the recently departed spread offense. (2) If Rivals depth chart is correct, Florida is very young on both OL and DL. (3) Florida is hurt by this year’s western conference rotation. They play Alabama, LSU, and Auburn in 2011. Very tough schedule.
The West is probably, plain and simple, a two team race, with Alabama winning.

Only one Gator (No, two)…….Dominquie Easley (and you will probably move him to first team by the end of the year). Jaye Howard should have been on one of those teams for sure….except he played injured the last part of the year. When he played and was not injured….he was one of the best DL in the conference. Also…..Caleb Stugis is on the second team as the PK….they just did not put Florida by his name.
Most of Florida’s talent is emerging…therefore, no presence on pre-seaon teams:
SEC stars in the making this year:
DEFENSE
Ronald Powell, DE/Hybrid OLB, Soph.
Domingue Easley – DL, Soph
Sharieff Floyd – DL, Soph
Jelani Jenkins – OLB, Soph
Gideon Ajabe – OLB, RSFr.
Cody Riggs – CB, Soph.
Matt Elam, SS, Soph.
OFFENSE
Mack Brown, RB, RSFr.
Jon Harrison, C, Soph.
Matt Patchan, OT, RS
Clay Burton, FB, Soph.
Quintin Dunbar, WR, RSFr.
Andre Debose, WR, RS Soph.
Plus…some very talented Jrs in:
Jon Halapio – OG, Jr.
Xavier Nixon, OT, Jr.
Frankie Hammond – WR, Jr.
Omaris Hines – WR, Jr.
And some seniors who I think are gong to have a break out season:
Jaye Howard – DE/DT, Sr.
Deonte Thompson – WR, Sr.
Florida recruiting class was also a good one this year…..and Muschamp is putting together a top 5 (maybe #1) class this year…..which will probably grow tonight after Friday Night Lights is over (over 100 of the top recruits in the nation showing their stuff in THE SWAMP tonight with blaring music, national championship trophies exhibited, Heisman Award winners talking, Pro football coaches from all over watching, Charlie Weis wearing four Super Bowl rings, Muschamp getting them pumped all up for the Gators……’
Yep…you guys keep on thinking Florida is headed back to the 70’s and 80’s when Georgia used to beat Florida….KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE.
You guys keep on putting Florida down….we love it….so do the very talented, young players on the Florida Gator team. Florida….although very young….is obsolutely loaded with talent…’
So much depends on the play of one person……John Brantley…..if he can live up to 75% of his potential this year….the Gators will win the East. If he plays like last year…..the Gators will lose 4 to 6 games.
We Gator fans feel good about our team…but the thought of John Brantley leading it….scares us to death. We are just all looking forward to what Weis can do with him……or that Jeff Driskell steps up.

The SEC East race is going to be interesting to watch. I’d probably put UGA @3,mostly because of depth. Too many injuries will kill them this year; but, Aaron Murray is going to be good. I don’t know if SC can repeat, but they appear to have the most talent coming back. Florida was a disaster last year (was it Tebow or Meyer that one those championships?) and they have a new coach, which is always dicey. UT is a true wild card. The fact that no one is even talking about them is a little scary. I’d probably go 1.SC, 2. FL, 3. GA, 4.UT, 5. KY, 6. Vandy. For the West, 1. Bama (big suprise right), 2. LSU, 3. Auburn, 4. Ark, 5. MSU, 6. Ole Miss.

@Tampa Gator always enjoy your posts and passion for your team TG, you bring like it should be…I hope we make you cry after Jaxs this year but I don’t predict it till we beat you guys a couple of times in a row you have bragging rights. And as far as Bama being a bigger game after the way they steam rolled you last year I would hope so. I expect the Gators to wreak a little vengeance this year.

I am amazed at the amount of passion both Gator and Bama fans have about the game…when Florida and Bama play. And the game is about as intense as it can be. Florida was really down last year…..and the coach did not coach much. The Gators paid for that. The Gators will be much better this year….and so will the game in Gainesville with the Tide. I am predicting and unset…..for no other reason than I am a loyal Gator fan….all heart…..no brains.
As far as the Georgia game…..I think this year’s game will bring back some of that old feeling because I think the game this year will have a lot of meaning for both teams. Go Gators.

I think SEC Media days should last a month next year. The cheerleading coaches could be interviewed, the guys who sell concessions could tell whats new on their menus, we could interview the stadium groundskeepers and do a lot of other interesting stuff. Maybe tickets could be sold and fans could bring their RVs and camp out. There could be a day or two devoted to “great plays in SEC history”. This is an event dying for a good PR agency. AJC should set aside a complete section next year for SEC media days. Maybe politicians could stop by for photo ops with the coaches. Lets start thinking here.

I still expect a close game, with lots of slobberknocking going on. Can’t count Florida out – past great recruiting years should have some boys becoming men, much like Georgia, but they have some toughies to play from the West. Doggies may be able to win it with two conference losses this year, but not both to South Crackalackie & the Swamp Lizzards. GO DOGGIES!

One SEC east title in how many years and you have arrived? You will have arrived when you win the SEC all together, and compete for a national championship. The SEC East title doesn’t insure you are ready for or have hit the big stage. It is just one step in a long process. When you finish in the top ten, have been in the running for the conference championship, and are talked about seriously by the national media, not S C fans or what ever media they have. S C has simply started walking around the door right now at best. Go 11-1 and beat the west side gang members consistently to win the SEC, and then talk the talk. The SEC has indeed been the premier conference for the last five years, but S C, and the DAWGS have got a way to go to be back in the picture for sure. You might be a favorite right now to win the east and beat UGA, but as of right now, your record is 0-0, the same as everybody else in the conference, so you might want to hold off on the invitations to the NC or BCS championship game for a little bit.

UGA will be forced into a passing game against SC because of Ellis Johnson’s defensive style.

UGA will need to play ball control offense to allow the young folks to get the experience they need to succeed. Quick strikes to a WR or long gains, will not be used much as it makes your OL, hold and contain too long, because of the time needed to allow the play to develop. Unless, we get a good match up like a one on one with one of the speedy WR’s we have, I don’t see many bombs being thrown. The offense needs, most likely, to be able to ground it out and control the clock. The defense, if it is as good as it appears, will give the offense ample opportunity to have the ball, and the offense will have to hold onto it a bit and give the D some rest.

In life or business, sometimes we finds ourselves at a serious crossroads. Take CMR. Last year we were a dismal 5-7 and if we lose the first two games, we will be 5-9 over 1.2 years and if we add in 09 @ 8-5, it will only be 13-14 over 2.2 seasons.
Folks ………… that could be our snap shot after the first 2 – 2011 games. Wow! If that happens, UGA could recover and run the table, then fine. If not, CMR has found himself in a spot that most of us do not want him to be in.

South Carolina will not win the east, not with garcia, but they’ll destroy us. They could win if Garcia is benched early. My bet is UT will surprise us and if not them Florida. Floridas problem is they have a tool as a coach but their talent level far exceeds everyone in the east.
We lack coaching and talent- thanks to the coaching. We can’t keep recruits in the state without some sort of violation. I swear if there is any other violations I’ll want to see people tarred and feathered given the disgrace we’ve become.
We lose to Boise, probably 55-17. Lose to South Carolina 35-10. Then who knows, we lose to UT, UF and Auburn on the last game of the season.
But I bet we finish #1 in personal fouls and fights. I love hearing how many blame Fairley for dirty play when we started the game off with a 15 yard personal foul and ended by running on the field in mass to start a fight…. and only our side did that which speaks volumes about our coaching versus a national championship bound coach?! They’re supposed to suspend players for leaving the sideline in a fight so what kind of a team would have had had the refs not given us a pass?
We’ve got problems and they can be fixed… in 2012 with new coaches.

Hey Gayturd 4 Life why don’t you ask yourself this question! When is the last time fu played a ranked school outside the state of florida that was a non-conference game during a season? Hmmmm If you can answer that then you will understand why it sucks to be a florida gayturd! GO NOLES~
