Hoover, Ala. — Sportswriters covering the SEC picked Georgia to finish second in the SEC’s Eastern Division and selected nine Bulldogs for the all-conference team.
Six Georgia players were named first-team All-SEC, including sophomore quaterback Aaron Murray, junior tight end Orson Charles, senior offensive tackle Cordy Glenn, senior place-kicker Blair Walsh, senior punter Drew Butler and senior kick returner Brandon Boykin. Senior center Ben Jones. senior defensive end DeAngelo Tyson and Boykin were named to the second team.
Alabama was picked to win the league, getting 98 points to finish ahead of LSU (29), Arkansas (18), South Carolina (14), Georgia (4), Florida (2) and Ole Miss (2).
The Gamecocks received 114 votes to win the East while Georgia had the second-most with 38. Florida got 12 votes.
Alabama was the West selection 111-30 over LSU. Arkansas was picked by 23 writers.
Take these results with a grain of salt. The sportswriters have picked the winner correctly just four times since SEC expansion in 1992.
This fact does not seem to have escaped Alabama coach Nick Saban.
“Well, it means nothing bascially,” Saban said of his team being the overwhleming favorite win the league. “We have a lot of challenges to face. We’re just interested in playing to our capabilities. I’m not a prognosticator. I can’t do that. I don’t understand how y’all do it.”

@ Logical US
Alright I get it. I’m talking “gibberish” and I can’t back what I’m saying. Basically my opinion doesn’t matter. I can accept that. Well I’ll let the 167 voters of the All- SEC team speak. And both UGA and S Car have 9 players on the all SEC team. Garcia shouldn’t be on there, because we know Spurrier will bench him, but that’s my opinion. So much for 9-5 and returning a boat load of starters.

Mark Bradley knows!! He picked UGA to win the East. Now I realize that some UGA fans say this is the kiss of death.
However, this year the law of averages will kick in and Mark will be correct given that he has been wrong so many times predicting pre-season SEC champs.

@ Tide Roll,
Taken out of context! Richt was interviewed by BEN JONES, nevertheless Ben Jones has been a great asset for us and is a four year starter. Looking for some of these freshman to come in and do as he did, but we’ll see.

Have to agree with the polls here.
SC is the team to beat in the East. Let’s see if Lattimore can follow-up his awesome freshman performance. Their added challenge is a tough western conference schedule (Auburn, Miss. State, Arkansas.)
Georgia has a shot but also has obvious, and long discussed, thin/questionable areas. They need to prove they can put it all together and get back on top.
Don’t count Florida out, but they are a bit of a long shot. (1) Brantley has to do better under the Weis pro-style attack than he did with the recently departed spread offense. (2) If Rivals depth chart is correct, Florida is very young on both OL and DL. (3) Florida is hurt by this year’s western conference rotation. They play Alabama, LSU, and Auburn in 2011. Very tough schedule.
The West is probably, plain and simple, a two team race, with Alabama winning.

None of it really matters until they play the games. I don’t think either Auburn or SC were picked to win the divisions last year were they? 3 teams have a legit shot in the East (SC, UGA, UF) and 3 teams in the West (UA, LSU, Arky).
Who knows, it could be MSU and UT in Atlanta?

tide (t)roll ever the race baiter conveniently ignores that three of the five 1st Team All-SEC offensive line players are white and 2 of them play for Alabama and the other for Auburn (a GA kid no less). The other two 1st team kids are black and guess who one of them is????? Cordy Glenn, a four year starter who was recruited by the Klansmen Richt and Bobo.
Once again tide (t)roll is exposed as total racist who obsesses over the recruiting practices of a team that he does not follow. What a complete and utter loser.

@ East Repeat,
I can remember some close UGA – USC games. I can even remember UGA handing you guys some beat downs ( remember when Robert Edwards ran wild on you in Columbia, Har Har). The only thing I can’t remember is the last time USC gave Georgia a beatdown. How long ago was that? Wake up dude. Spurrier is one or two years away from retirement. There are many good reasons why your team resides in the cellar most years. Enjoy your time in the sun.

Only one Gator (No, two)…….Dominquie Easley (and you will probably move him to first team by the end of the year). Jaye Howard should have been on one of those teams for sure….except he played injured the last part of the year. When he played and was not injured….he was one of the best DL in the conference. Also…..Caleb Stugis is on the second team as the PK….they just did not put Florida by his name.
Most of Florida’s talent is emerging…therefore, no presence on pre-seaon teams:
SEC stars in the making this year:
DEFENSE
Ronald Powell, DE/Hybrid OLB, Soph.
Domingue Easley – DL, Soph
Sharieff Floyd – DL, Soph
Jelani Jenkins – OLB, Soph
Gideon Ajabe – OLB, RSFr.
Cody Riggs – CB, Soph.
Matt Elam, SS, Soph.
OFFENSE
Mack Brown, RB, RSFr.
Jon Harrison, C, Soph.
Matt Patchan, OT, RS
Clay Burton, FB, Soph.
Quintin Dunbar, WR, RSFr.
Andre Debose, WR, RS Soph.
Plus…some very talented Jrs in:
Jon Halapio – OG, Jr.
Xavier Nixon, OT, Jr.
Frankie Hammond – WR, Jr.
Omaris Hines – WR, Jr.
And some seniors who I think are gong to have a break out season:
Jaye Howard – DE/DT, Sr.
Deonte Thompson – WR, Sr.
Florida recruiting class was also a good one this year…..and Muschamp is putting together a top 5 (maybe #1) class this year…..which will probably grow tonight after Friday Night Lights is over (over 100 of the top recruits in the nation showing their stuff in THE SWAMP tonight with blaring music, national championship trophies exhibited, Heisman Award winners talking, Pro football coaches from all over watching, Charlie Weis wearing four Super Bowl rings, Muschamp getting them pumped all up for the Gators……’
Yep…you guys keep on thinking Florida is headed back to the 70’s and 80’s when Georgia used to beat Florida….KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE.
You guys keep on putting Florida down….we love it….so do the very talented, young players on the Florida Gator team. Florida….although very young….is obsolutely loaded with talent…’
So much depends on the play of one person……John Brantley…..if he can live up to 75% of his potential this year….the Gators will win the East. If he plays like last year…..the Gators will lose 4 to 6 games.
We Gator fans feel good about our team…but the thought of John Brantley leading it….scares us to death. We are just all looking forward to what Weis can do with him……or that Jeff Driskell steps up.

Good post about the Gators……as I posted yesterday…..the game against Bama in THE SWAMP is huge for the Gators…..believe it or not….Georgia fans….Bama is a bigger game now for Florida than the Georgia game. We just don’t play them every year….unless we go to the SEC title game….which has happended a few times lately….if you haven’t noticed.

Tide Roll you must be the most ignorant bama fan since that guy that killed all those trees at Auburn listen up nobody at Georgia cares what you think about offensive lineman. You clearly have some wierd agenda going on and we probably have the best center and tackle in the country with Jones and Glenn. We also have the best lineman in the country commited to UGA for next year.Give your offensive line theories a rest cause nobody gives a crap.

Get real dogs, you will start the year with blowout losses to Boise and Carolina, and we all know what is going to happen in Jacksonville. Losses to Tenn and Auburn are certain also and it is not hard to see the dogs losing a couple between Ken, Tech, and Miss State, so I would say 5-7 at best. See you in Jacksonville for your annual beating, again.

The SEC East race is going to be interesting to watch. I’d probably put UGA @3,mostly because of depth. Too many injuries will kill them this year; but, Aaron Murray is going to be good. I don’t know if SC can repeat, but they appear to have the most talent coming back. Florida was a disaster last year (was it Tebow or Meyer that one those championships?) and they have a new coach, which is always dicey. UT is a true wild card. The fact that no one is even talking about them is a little scary. I’d probably go 1.SC, 2. FL, 3. GA, 4.UT, 5. KY, 6. Vandy. For the West, 1. Bama (big suprise right), 2. LSU, 3. Auburn, 4. Ark, 5. MSU, 6. Ole Miss.

@Tampa Gator always enjoy your posts and passion for your team TG, you bring like it should be…I hope we make you cry after Jaxs this year but I don’t predict it till we beat you guys a couple of times in a row you have bragging rights. I am amazed at the amount of passion both Gator and Bama fans have about the game…when Florida and Bama play. And the game is about as intense as it can be. Florida was really down last year…..and the coach did not coach much. The Gators paid for that. The Gators will be much better this year….and so will the game in Gainesville with the Tide. I am predicting and unset…..for no other reason than I am a loyal Gator fan….all heart…..no brains.
As far as the Georgia game…..I think this year’s game will bring back some of that old feeling because I think the game this year will have a lot of meaning for both teams. Go Gators.

The cheerleading coaches could be interviewed, the guys who sell concessions could tell whats new on their menus, we could interview the stadium groundskeepers and do a lot of other interesting stuff. Maybe tickets could be sold and fans could bring their RVs and camp out. There could be a day or two devoted to “great plays in SEC history”. This is an event dying for a good PR agency. AJC should set aside a complete section next year for SEC media days. Maybe politicians could stop by for photo ops with the coaches. Lets start thinking here.

GameChickens not gonna run up the middle on us like they did last year – gonna force Boozer Man to try and beat us with his arm. Mistakes will kill him due to pressure off the ends. I still expect a close game, with lots of slobberknocking going on. Can’t count Florida out – past great recruiting years should have some boys becoming men, much like Georgia, but they have some toughies to play from the West. Doggies may be able to win it with two conference losses this year, but not both to South Crackalackie & the Swamp Lizzards. GO DOGGIES!

SC beat down of UGA happened, now let me think… oh yea, 2011. UGA will be better in the second half of season, you know, after the “change”. Teams usually respond to a fire breathing interim coach

wreckmaniac,
aaron murray was a freshman all american last year which means he was the best freshman qb in the country. pretty sure that means he could start on 90 percent of d1 teams. i bet every sec team would rather have him than their current guy. also, garcia is def not strides ahead of him consiering aaron had much better stats and it also helps that aaron hasnt had 5 suspensions. youre dumb

I love how dog fans say how they will beat SC and give their excuses why but when someone uses the same excuse why they will lose to UF, it’s not fair!! LOL Luckily I am friends with ga fans who aren’t idiots and realize this season will not be 10-2 and more like 7-5. Those realists are usually real mutts!

Just heard a report on espn that said ohio state will not receive much punishment if any compared to what they self did. This is a joke. GT had 1 player who may have screwed up. THis team has like 20. Probably 30. Man I will make it a goal this year to give every damn osu player a benefit. I live in Ohio and am a Tenn fan. Even if it’s a damn snickers bar.

R U kidding,
My friend you need to lay off the hootch, on these late night blog comments. Not that the presidential election has anything to do with UGA playing or where they end up in the SEC East this year, but I believe Georgia voted and ended up a red state, and Ohio, ended up a blue state in the last elections. You need to stay on topic a little bit on these blogs. Doesn’t Tenn. have a blog for you?

It does not bode well that UGA has 0 players on the 1st team defense.

Dawg Eon- Your post says it all about the actual and perceived condition of the UGA football program, “GA wins east with a huge UPSET over south carolina in Athens”. Says it all- UGA beating SC in Athens would be considered an UPSET. We have arrived and UGA is sliding, sliding, sliding

Dawg Eon…..
I guess DT Dominque Easley, LB Jon Bositc, and PK Caleb Sturgis don’t count at being on any of the three teams….even though they play for the Florida Gators. .

One SEC east title in how many years and you have arrived? You will have arrived when you win the SEC all together, and compete for a national championship. The SEC East title doesn’t insure you are ready for or have hit the big stage. It is just one step in a long process. When you finish in the top ten, have been in the running for the conference championship, and are talked about seriously by the national media, not S C fans or what ever media they have. S C has simply started walking around the door right now at best. Go 11-1 and beat the west side gang members consistently to win the SEC, and then talk the talk. The SEC has indeed been the premier conference for the last five years, but S C, and the DAWGS have got a way to go to be back in the picture for sure. You might be a favorite right now to win the east and beat UGA, but as of right now, your record is 0-0, the same as everybody else in the conference, so you might want to hold off on the invitations to the NC or BCS championship game for a little bit.
