Turns out this might have been a pretty significant day when Valdosta athlete Malcolm Mitchell chose Georgia over Alabama. (AJC photo by C. Towers)
Georgia coach Mark Richt hinted that he’d been hearing some good things about at least one of the young wide receivers from some of the veteran players but was hesitant to go into much detail. The coaches, after all, aren’t able to spend any time coaching or watching summer workouts and, in fact, aren’t even allowed to get reports from the strength and conditioning coaches.
But it didn’t take very long for quarterback Aaron Murray to reveal which player was creating all the buzz. That player is Valdosta High graduate Malcolm Mitchell, who actually was recruited to Georgia as a cornerback.
I’ll just let Murray do the talking:
“I haven’t seen speed and quickness like that for a while,” he said. “The other day he ran a post pattern and split our starting safety and one of our starting corners. Shawn Williams came up to me afterward and he’s like, ‘Aaron, I’ve never seen somebody with that kind of speed before.’ You ask any of the DBs, Boykin or any of those guys, Malcolm has unbelievable speed, unbelievable quickness.
“The thing I like about him most is he works harder than anyone. I would say he knows already 70 to 80 percent of the playbook. He’s been studying every day. Every day after pass drills he’ll get with me and we’ll work on routes a half-hour or 45 minutes. That’s every day. Three times a week he’ll call me and say, ‘let’s go work on routes; let’s go do this and that.’”
Murray was asked if he thought Mitchell could be a factor on offense early in the season.
“He’s ready to go. He knows the playbook, he knows the routes. I’m sure Coach [Tony] Ball will tweak a few things here and there by the time we go to camp. But, for the most part, we’re pretty excited about his knowledge of the game and what he’s going to be able to do.”
If Murray’s assessment is true, that’s very good news for the Bulldogs. Georgia lost its top two receivers to NFL draft in No. 4 pick A.J. Green and third-rounder Kris Durham. Together they accounted for 1,507 yards and 12 receiving touchdowns.
The Bulldogs have a solid top two to start the season in Tavarres King and Marlon Brown. But they’ve been looking for another “defense stretcher” that can be a legitimate vertical threat.
Sounds like they may have identified one.

Does that include speed with pads?
It’s a lot harder to run with pads and helmet on.
Let’s hold off on all optimism until the kid gets out to the field with pads and real competition.
It’s easy to run on the field without pads and guys actually going hard, it’s not even camp yet.

For football insider @ 3:47 Those defensive backs covering him in drills aren’t wearing pads either so they would have a better idea of his speed than you would . Also they have faced some of the fastest wide receivers in the SEC on a week by week basis they know how’s fast> Also having watched Malcom play in his hometown games he’s legitimate speed burner who can play.

If we have enough speed and play makers on the field at WR,or TE maybe BOBO needs to create some plays that will get all of them in the game at the same time. That might look a little like Oklahoma State or Texas Tech a little but it sure would be a little different and give the other teams something to think about.

I saw wide out Chris Conley from Paulding County play in an AA all star game. It was either the US Army game in San Antonio or the All Armour game in Florida on tv. Conley is big and he has good hands, very good speed and he will provide some major help at wide out, as will Valdosta’s Mr. Mitchell.
Conley caught one TD in the AA game on a long slant route and was covered by a highly, highly regarded AA corner AND safety and he just blew past them like they were 7th graders.
Mitchell and Conely as receivers make UGA complety better right now on paper, than even last year on the field. Remember, AJ Green DID NOTHING for UGA in his entire era and WAS NOT ON THE FIELD IN 4 GAMES in 2010 and his issue divided and badly hurt UGA’s team attitude. He, like Ealey and King was a cancer.

Playing speed will scale down with pads, but it doesn’t mean he isn’t very fast. Take two receivers with no pads and have them run routes. Then take the same two receivers and put them in pads and have them run routes. The faster of the two without pads will, more often than not, be the faster of the two with pads.
Let those who actually play and those who actually coach make the judgement call. I trust Murray and the defense’s assessment. Especially since they all played with AJ Green he was supposed to be among the fastest on the team…with or without pads.
Just something to think about. Go Dawgs!

AJ Green was not fast (4.5 @ 40), however he was very good at getting seperation with the DB in his route. Accurate and smooth route running skills were his keys to getting seperaton. Speed kills for a deep threat receiver (in post routes and go routes). If Malcolm has the kind of speed that leaves our starting corner and safety wondering what happened then this will be a special kind of talent that UGA has been missing. Dont want to draw the highlight away from Malcolm, but look at what Murray was throwing too and what he now has in the Dream Team class.
M. Brown 4.50
R. Wooten 4.50
I. Troupe 4.49
T. King 4.50

M. Mitchell 4.40 – 6-1 190
J. Wesley 4.41 – 6-0 202

either i had something to drink or someone up above dissed a.j. green. I refuse to criticize any player at UGA individually, including Marlon Brown until BoBo stops calling play-action on 3rd and long and we don’t have the running game as a threat, call a slant route to a THIRD wr at anytime during the game, or calls at least one screen with a fast player. When you have a bobo like BoBo calling plays from an old FSU offensive scheme even they haven’t used in 10 years, how can you criticize any of these players who are woefully underdeveloped? How much more effective was UGA offensively with AJ Green? How many games did he win or put them in position to win during his era? How many predictable post and go routes did he run, while double covered, and snag the ball out of the air?..Anyway, Malcolm Mitchell will be fine. He only played on the historically BEST high school in the nation.

slydog, do you doubt that our coach followed up on his promise to study cutting edge football?
I swear, if there aren’t some new elements in those old, stale formations this season after that promise, Richt will have lost me.
Great coaches make changes in regard to the talent they have. Anybody think Chizik ever ran that misdirection, spread the field, offense they ran last season? Of course not. But he had Cam, and he and his OC kept adding new stuff all season. I know. I watched.
Richt/Bobo (to date) have run the same predictable stuff. Any coach should run a pro offense when you have Stafford, Knowshon, MoMass, and AJ. When the coach doesn’t have all of those NFL starters, he better adapt.
Richt/Bobo better adapt. It’s now or never. I’m hoping for the best.

Good thing for Georgia….but you need more than one receiver to step up. Not surprising the information on this kid…..I know Urban recruited him real hard because of the blazing speed. He is a super talent. But 7 on 7 drills in the summer does not match to going over the middle in practice or in games. Time will tell if he is the read deal or not…..but he sure sounds like he has the right attitude and work ethic to be a big success. Good kid, too. Dunbar is the same type of young talent at Florida this year…..a redshirt freshman who would have broken into the lineup at the start of last year but went down with a lengthy injury and Urban decided to redshirt him at mid season when he came back. The Georgia-Florida game is going to be tussle this year, for sure.

a cross between Percy Harvin and Hines Ward. You can line him up

Malcolm Mitchell was the difference maker in last year’s recruiting class and the big surprise the night he chose UGA. Coach Richt mentioned that when he and Jay Rome both chose the Dawgs, it really made the Dream Team a reality. I know everyone wants to give Ray Drew all the credit, and he deserves some, but the night MM chose UGA happily shocked me and all UGA fans. Malcomn’s favorite song is Linda Rondstatt’s Blue Bayou,
of course, he spells it “Blew by You”.
All Aaron needs to do, is what Johnny U. and hate to say
Spurrier and Wuerfell knew, don’t look for your receiver,
take the snap and throw it to a specified point, leave it up
to the receiver to run the route to get to the point at a specified
time. Takes pressure off the offensive line. Might need to
adlib at the line of scrimmage after casing out the coverage.

I love the Boise team and their coaching staff. Kellen Moore is the
real deal. But, I don’t think they, nor the sports media realize what
they are coming against. Peterson’s beating Oklahoma, coming from
behind and winning in overtime is probably the greatest game I have
ever seen (on TV), I think the new defense of Georgia and Aaron and
his new talent will separate the men from the boys. This could be the
classic matchup of the season, and good luck to the Boise team for the
rest of the season. Maybe you can get a matchup against the Dawgs

He might be a tad slower with pads, but that is inversely proportional as well for the Cb’s trying to cover him. I would think then that they both negate each other, and he is still one fast kid. If he already knows 80% of the play book, and is chomping at the bit to get on the field, UGA just might have themselves one good player then.

we could use some speed for real. i hope the coaching staff uses him often. i remember when marlon brown came in as a big recruit and the coaching staff wasted his freshman year by only playing him a few plays a game if even that. we need help now at WR and i hope that richt uses mitchell, conley, and Justin Scott-Wesley a lot this year. richt does not have the luxury to wait one more year and hope that these players develop, he needs to use trial by fire and get them into the game. of course this goes for crowell too.

Keys to success this year, Ben Jones becoming a leader and playing to his potential. If the Oline can gell this will be a tough group to handle. I think Samuel will blossom into one of the best backs in the league, “if” given the chance. Sounds like the receivers are ready to do their part. Imagine, a solid running game to set up Richt’s love, a “high octane” passing game. Just hope we will commit to establish a solid run game.

Dawgnation,
I’ve been watching some Boise State-UGA youtubes, and I’ve determined that we are in imminent danger with the Boise State game. We’re a lot bigger then they are, but they are much, much better coached. Our coaching has sunk our ship on a regular basis the past few years. Remember a couple of years ago at Oklahoma State? Coaching blew that game for us, and it poisoned the season. What about last year? Losing to Colorado? What about losing a bowl game to Central Florida University? See what I mean? Boise State has never had such an opportunity to establish itself. A win in the Georgia Dome will likely take them to an undefeated season and the NC since they have such a patsy schedule. Only one thing will save us: our players and their spirit. They have to reach back to our days of Glory when the Dawgs were junkyard mean and they played smash-mouth power football, not that FSU fancy schmancy pass throwing all the time. If the players all get together and decide that the Georgia Dome’s gonna be a killing field for the broncos, then we will win. If they buy into that Nike gimmick stuff that Richt is pushing, it’s all over…

Kellen Moore. Probably my second most favorite team to watch on TV.
However, they did lose last yea to Nevada. Do you really think Nevada
has a better defense than what Georgia is putting together this year?
I think Kellen will be under extreme pressure from our 3-4 defense, our
new nose guard, and the defensive ends and linebackers whom I hope will
be blitzing on every play, and putting Kellen on his arse evey play. Even
Kellen will get a little tippy toes early in this game. Sorry Boise, I love you,
but I don’t think you realize what you are getting into. This year’s Dawgs
will not resemble last year’s, they have new leadership, and are hungry, (I hope).

The biggest concerns for UGA on Sept 3 are Coaching – no improvement last season, Offensive Line – no improvement since last season. Defense – little improvement over last season. (Consider the performance of the team in last season’s first game and compare it to their performance in the bowl game – I saw zero improvement except a bit on D)
With less talent but firing on all cylinders Boise State will be no Hawaii. They knocked off Va Tech in the season opener last year I believe and had a stellar record.
If Richt is resorting to new uniforms as a way of inspiring his team then we are in real trouble – but I think we all knew that already.

JayD— 4.5 is fast when the guy can run a 4.5 in full pads and making cuts etc. But when he only runs a 5.0 or over in full pads and cuts then 4.5 would not be that impressive. It is on the field playing speed that kills i.e. Deion Sanders now there is a guy with real speed.
It is good to hear that Mr. Mitchell has on field blazing speed for that has been missing, it is also impressive that he has come in with the attitude that he is going to take over a WR position by learning the play book, routes etc. We haven’t had too many of those lately, it is also interesting to note that Conley has that kind of on the field blazing speed as well, hopefully he is the same kind of hard worker who will accept the challenge of learning the playbook, routes etc and compete thus making all of them better. The uniform change for the opener is a way that UGA gets a little bit of change from Nike. That is all it is. It has nothing to do with CMR trying to inspire his young team. They will be ready to play, no mattwer what uniform they have on. It is a one game thing for a nationally televised game. Nike will get a lot of publicity doing this.

FLA DAWG, college football is pretty thick with gimmics. The entire concept of the game IS a gimmic. But in this particular case, as the article specifically stated, this is pretty much a mandate for getting to play in this game. (the game that is pretty much a gimmic itself).
The unis had nothing to do with Alabama being stronger and executing better than Georgia that day. And had the Dawgs kicked thier butts, the unis would not have been a factor in that either. Uniforms are just that. Colors are just decorations. If you remove “gimmic” from them, then every game is solid white VS solid greys.

People just do not understand what Nike does for UGA. They pump millions upon millions of dollars into the athletic department. Not only the money, they also give out equipment and appreal. Last but not least, UGA signed a contract with Nike. I think that CMR is just tired of hearing about all the negativity about UGA, and is just trying to deflect some of it, and talk about something else. The university is paid to promote these uniforms as part of the deal, and the players seem excited about wearing them for the one game they will. Considering how much money UGA gets out of the deal, and how much equipemnt that Nike provides the football team, it seems like a small sacrifice to me.
