Redshirt freshman tailback Ken Malcome, a Southwest DeKalb graduate, feels he has been "slept on a little bit." (UGA photo by Steve Colquitt)
The first thing you notice about Ken Malcome is his physique. He’s not the heavyset kid known around Southwest DeKalb as “Boo” anymore. Upon initial sighting he actually looks taller. To that notion he just laughs and says his body has “been rearranged.”
“I’ve lost a lot of body fat,” Malcome said this past Friday. “I can’t remember what my percentage was the last time they checked it but it’s a lot lower. I got a lot more muscle, a lot more tone. The coaches say I look a lot better from the time I first got here.”
Malcome came to Georgia last year at 6-foot, 215 pounds and weighed 226 when the Bulldogs entered spring practice. He now sits at 220 pounds, which he said is right about where Georgia wants him.
As for the “rearrangement,” Malcome credits that to two things: One, the daily torture chamber that is Georgia’s offseason strength and conditioning program under coach Joe Tereshinski; and two, Malcome is supremely motivated to get some playing time at tailback this fall.
“I feel like I’ve been slept on a little bit,” said Malcome, who rushed for 1,168 yards and 16 touchdowns at Southwest DeKalb before redshirting last season. “I’ve got to be ready Sept. 3rd. That’s all I’ve been thinking in my head.”
Malcome best be ready. After this week’s news that junior Carlton Thomas will have to sit out the opener due to a disciplinary suspension, he’s one of three scholarships tailbacks the Bulldogs have left, and that’s only after Georgia moved Richard Samuel back over to offense from linebacker. Samuel played 22 games at tailback with six starts his first two seasons before getting moved to defense and redshirting last year. So Samuel is now the only tailback with game experience.
“A lot of things have happened this summer,” Malcome said. “We lost Washaun [Ealey] and Caleb [King] and now Richard’s back. But we’ve still been grinding. The current running backs can’t think about all that other stuff. Whatever happens, happens. It’s unfortunate that some of those guys are gone, but we have to look forward and keep moving.”
Malcome said he doesn’t see Samuel’s move back to the position as a lack of confidence from the coaching staff in him or true freshman Isaiah Crowell.
“It’s probably good to have that experience,” Malcome said. “We’re still very young. Richard gives us an experienced back and can help us keep our confidence up.”
Malcome may have already found his way on the field, but minor injuries and difficulty grasping the playbook have held him back. He missed 10 practice sessions in the spring due to a groin injury. He said it’s still an issue but believes he can play through it.
“The groin is cool now,” Malcome said. “I’m still getting treatment on it. I’m going to try my best to get it better for camp. Once you start running on it it’ll start hurting again, but I’ve just got to keep going.”
There’s reason to believe he can. So far at least, he has survived Tereshinski’s run-heavy training regimen.
“It’s rough, real rough,” Malcome said. “I’m not much of a long-distance runner, but I make my times. You get used to it after a while.”
It shows. Soon we’ll find out if it translates onto the football field.

That is exactly what I said the day after the move was made.
Plus, there is better competition.
I hope Malcome has a great year along with Samuel and Crowell ends up being redshirted. How would that be for all the predictions of “We have to have Crowell or we are done”??

Auburn, Florida, LSU and Alabama (and now maybe SC) may win games from September through January, but UGA is the best the rest of the year. Your offense is going to be great, you win 6 games (were any against someone with a winning record?) lose your top 2 wideouts, top 2 O linemen & top 2 running backs, but this year……….

Reports from Athens regaring Crowell:
1.) Can’t make it through Jor T workouts
2.) Not physically strong at all
3.) Having to be led around campus on a leash by Thomas Brown
Those qualities sir are not the makings of a leader on a football team.
This boy needs to grow up and earn the respect of his teammates and coaches.
I hope I am wrong and he changes his spots but I am not hopeful.

What you’re saying doesn’t surprise me in the least. This is a pattern that has repeated itself over and over again under CMR. DawginLex, I am hearing some things that really concern me as well. However, I disagree with the redshirt idea. I think the redshirt is a thing of the past. These kids nowadays all too rarely stay in school, redshirt or no redshirt. All a redshirt for this kid will do is insure that we have him for two years instead of three. Plus we are just too short at the position this year. I actually have the highest hopes for a Malcombe/Carlton Thomas one two punch. If we can just keep these two focused and healthy. Glad to hear Joe T is tough on them. Gosh we have needed that!!
By the way, if this is the same AppalacianDawg as last year, he’s usually alright. Liked your comeback though.

Of course Crowell won’t be redshirted, we learned that lesson with Moreno – the good ones don’t hang around when there’s money to be made…dawginlex seems to be ‘in on the know’, or at least wants us to believe he is, and if so young Mr. Crowell won’t necessarily be the ‘go-to’ back that we were expecting, but my bet is he’ll be a true threat to go all the way on any given down if used properly, which I believe he will. It’s how he does on the field the counts – after all Herschel was labeled ‘just a big, stiff, back’ by Vince before that Tennessee game.
Meanwhile here’s hoping that Boo and Sammy will make big contributions and help make Georgia’s running game a true positive. By the way, I’m still pushing for them to give The Camilla Comet (Justin Scott-Wesley) a ‘look-see’ at T-back…you gotta figure out how to get that kind of speed and strength in the game in the right spots and he shouldn’t be limited to the fourth or fifth WR.

If he is making it through the Joe-T run heavy program then he should hold up during the season, as far as the groin is concerned. These guys are being pushed harder than ever under CMR and it will show on the field this year. Boo will be fine and will be a good combo with Samuel and Crowell. Samuel = Inside Back, Malcome = Inside Back and Crowell = Outside Back and Receiver from backfield. These three will be the best RB package that UGA has put on the field since Knowshon Moreno and Thomas Brown. Glad to see Samuel is going to get his chance to carry this team in the running game and show that flashy backs (i.e. Ealey and King) are not the need at UGA. We need a grinder that can pound through the defense and eat up the game clock to control the game. Samuel and Boo will be a big surprise to all the naysayers this year! Go Dawgs!

Georgia’s RBs
Crowell (no experience, but a lot of hype like Ealey and King), Malcome (no experience at all and working on his body fat), Samuel (not very good at LB or RB), and Thomas (little experience and wishes he had some body fat)
vs.
the Gator’s RBs
Rainey (tons of experience on the playing field….and I know, texting women inappropriately in the past…..and is going to be dynamic in the pro style), Demps (tons of experience and the fastest RB in the SEC), Gillissee (lots of experience and a strong inside runner), Brown (no experiecne but dynamic in the pro style last spring before breaking a small bone in his leg…and has been looking terrific this summer in player workouts).
RB – Edge: big time for the Gators at this time….and less so if Crowell is the second coming of one, Herschel Walker.
QB – Edge: Big time – Georgia with Murray. Will Brantley grow some balls this summer and fall?
WR – Edge: Gators, slightly (Dunbar, Hammond, Hines, Thompson, Ali, Patton….all have more potential than the Georgia WRs except for one)
OL- Edge: Gators, slightly with the healthy (big if) return of Matt Patchan at OT
TE’s-Edge: Dawgs by a good amount, but Reed and Leonard may surprise big time this fall
DL – Edge: Gators, a little more than slightly, and maybe a whole lot if Ealey and Floyd play like they did this past spring and Powell has the impact everyone is stating he will
LB’s: Edge: toss up…both have talent but both have a lot to prove. This could be a big year for both, Joe Bostic and Jelani Jenkins—but they have been inconsistent in the past
CB’s – Edge: slight edge to Georgia with the Gator’s loss of Janoris Jenkins
SS – Edge: Matt Elam is a lot better athlete and has more “honest” potential than Mr. Dirty himself, Mr. Rambo, but Mr. Dirty does have more experience at this time. But Elam is being mentioned for possible SEC and National awards at strong safety. Toss up at this time.
FS – Edge to Georgia…..no proven talent on the field for Florida at this time.
Special teams – Toss up, with Georgia having an edge in the kicking game at this time. But not on kickoff and punt coverage….none better than Florida.
Finally
COACHING!!!
HC -
Muschamp vs. Richt – Based on performance in the postions they have held…I take Muschamp on game day.
OC -
Bobo vs. Weis – need I laugh now….or later?
DC -
Both unproven in college (although one had one year producing not very good results….and one has a better coaching record in the pros, and he does not coach at Georgia)
OL -
Verducci is one of the best OL coaches in college or the pros – edge, Florida.
DL -
Florida is coached by a former Hall of Fame DL in the NFL….and maybe one of the best defensive lineman in NFL history…..may I say more….Edge: Florida.
LBs – Toss up – both have decent coaches
DBs – Edge: Florida – The former DB at Auburn is a very good one.
WRs – Edge: Florida – Hill is a former Gator WR under Spurrier…and a very good coach.
Special teams – Gators have one of the best special teams in the country every year.
Kicking game – Georgia is better at this time….but Florida’s kicker is strong if he is healthy….and they signed the best punter in the country last year.
Overall experience and overall talent on the team: Edge: Gators
Overall leadership at the all important QB position: Edge – Dawgs
Overall coaching: Edge: Gators
Overall program tradition: 18 out of 21….and still counting this fall.
Go Gators!

Everyone who is doubting DawginLex, I have heard the same thing from ICs teammates. Most of the team has been throughly unimpressed with IC thus far. He didn’t come in with a workman like attitiude, he came in with a crown on his head and an air of entitlement.

Easy to root for kids like this – I like his attitude!
With that said – I think UGA is in for a 7-5 or 8-4 year. Broncos will be ready and we return a slew of players. UGA O-Line is a mess and the TB situation is not ideal – but Samuel, Malcome and Crowell would not be at UGA if they were not talented. Who knows? UGA defense will need to be great early in the season – think UGA can gel into a monster of a team by the end of the season.
I still think that it is a good thing for Ealey and King to be gone. Way too much baggage and lets face it – these guys were distractions and you could not depend on them – these two cats were selfish and did not buy into the team concept – otherwise, they would still be on the UGA roster.
Said this the other day – having a roster full of impressive superior athletes is good – but having a roster full of disciplined football players that function as a team is what will keep a coach employed.
IMHO – UGA has not been disciplined and has not played as a team the last few seasons.
Kudos to players like R. Samuel – this guy is all team.
UGA loses to Boise and South Carolina – is in trouble against Mississippi State and Florida. Potential dog fights against Tennessee, Auburn and GT – but thinking UGA wins these games. Should win the other games on the schedule.
Final score – Boise 28- UGA 17

Boise will be amazed at how athletic we are compared to VT and TCU.
We have better athletes at every position on the field except QB where that is a push.
Doug Martin woudln’t start for us at RB
Neither would any of your receivers or TE
Our D-line is bigger than yours and even though you return a ton of players, they are not as athletic as ours
Our 1st team OL is bigger than your 1st team DL and OL
Our kicking game is better
Your coach is more creative but that is the only advantage

That report about Crowell is a month old. Crowell failed to finish one practice (his first collegiate practice) and the very next practice, he was far improved. If you don’t know all the specifics, don’t try and defame an 18 year old kid. Aaron Murray said that he has been tearing it up in the pass drills and catches everything. So in retrospect, please keep your mouth shut when you feel the urge to put down a kid because he doesn’t live up to your expectations. Crowell has a lot of room to grow up as do you if you still feel the urge to belittle kids in blogs. All Crowell needs to do is pass his classes, stay out of trouble, and he’ll be a beast on the football field.

At least we have people working like Thomas Brown and Will Witherspoon who can keep any eye on new players and someone these kids can respect. I think that will really pay off after 2 or 3 recruiting classes. Should have been done a long time ago but CMR relied too heavily on friends who had NO respect from players. I think last season was the culmination of errors CMR had made in judgement of his staff over the past 4 or 5 years beginning with the saga to not pay BVG the money he wanted. I only pray that that culmination does not spread into 2011. It very well may.

Not a bad deal if I am right and if IC matures reasonably
well we should be alright at th TB position by the time Fl.

@DawginLex: I’m right there with you about IC disproving the rumors circulating about his work ethic. I think he will mature nicely but he didn’t come in with the right attitude to be a starter out of the gate. And all our fans ready to proclaim him “the key to the offense” need to realize he is a 18yo KID who needs to mature a little to handle the spotlight that is cast on the bigtime SEC players.
We all believe he has the physical tools to be an AA but so far, and its way too early to definitively say, he has lacked the attitude and mentality to do such. He will be used as a true freshman but it will be to the detriment of his development. Its dam near impossible to get the hype this kid has had and not get an ego.
Crowell won’t be gone in three years unless he transfers. He’ll need that long to handle the hype that his talent generates.

DawginLex – Some of what you’ve heard about Crowell may be true, but I can tell you with 100% certainty that the kid is in shape and a load. He’s a stud, and every one of the kids in Athens knows it.
His attitude and maturity needs some work, but the kid is 18. Let’s allow him to play before spreading all the bull. You said you’re 54…yet you’re still so immature that feel the need to play insider on a newspaper board. Grow up, my man, and let the kid at least get into fall practice before you judge him.

If this kid’s groin injury is still giving him problems you can write off another running back for 2011. Just another in a long line of 4 star prospects that UGA signs and they wind up with major injuries that keep them from contirbuting. This program seems to get more of these types of injuries than any school in the SEC. Maybe Richt had better do more ministry work, because the heaven’s above certainly aren’t looking down on him or his program. Just a quick list of these type of injuries, Long, Benedict, BOO, Sanks, Tanner Strickland,Dexter Morant, T.J.Stripling. That is an all-star team if they lived up to their potential, but none of them have ever really contributed at UGA. As far as the groin injury, if it hasn’t healed properly by now, don’t look for it to dramatically improve once contact begins.Remember King having a groin or hamstring that kept him out of half the season a couple of years ago. Doens’t really matter, because UGA has no line to block no matter who is carrying the ball, and this is a Richt problem that has been at UGA for 10 years now. An unlucky UGA is less than mediocre. Anyone with this much hate must have just lost the only ACC title their team has ever won. We are fans and that means getting excited about the upcoming season, regardless of what the recent history says. I guess this is why you can’t fill a high school-esque stadium. Your team stinks, aren’t getting any better, so why show up? (average Tech mentality)
For all you techies who continually defend the failed attempt at a cover-up, do you think Nixon would have been impeached if he didn’t try to cover it up? What if Clemmons told the truth to Congress or said nothing at all? Telling the truth goes a long way and cover ups get you impeached or on 4 years probation and titles stripped.

DawginLex – responding to your reply – Oklahoma, Oregon (twice) and VT were probably more athletic at every position than Boise State – except for QB being a push – as well.
In fact – I would think that all of those teams would beat UGA over the last few years as UGA has been dropping off.
I am sure UGA was a lot more athletic – at every position – except for QB being a push – than OK STATE, South Carolina, MS STATE, COLORADO and THE University of CENTREL FLORIDA.
Point is – Boise has closed the gap some in our overall athleticism.
And to tell you the truth – UGA is and should be deeper than Boise State.
However, we are very discipline and play as a team. Our players develop. Maybe some of UGA’s 4 and 5 star recruits maxed out in High School and just could not develop beyond average college football players.
I do think UGA has bottomed out and cycling back -up. But not too sure how high they will go.
I used to think Coach Richt would win at least ONE NT – and thought UGA would win several NT’s under his leadership. I do not think Richt will sniff a National Title game – unless he is an invited guest.
Real leadership, team discipline, player development and coaching have been missing in Athens – how else do you explain UGA’s last two seasons?
Getting Upset every by a lesser opponent is going to happen – like Alabama vs Utah.
However – going 8-5 – then 6-7 – with losses to:
– an average South Carolina team that won the SEC EAST by default because UGA, FLORIDA and Tennessee are on vacation (all SEC EAST teams had at least 5 losses last year)
– Mississippi State
– Colorado – frigging Colorado – they were horrible and their coach got fired!!!!
– a below average Florida team
– UCF – yes, UCF – that lost to Southen Mississippi
This tells you the current state of your program as a team. This is a TEAM game!
Next!!!
It’s the begginning of the year – we all have rose colored glasses on when we view our teams. But let’s be realistic – do you think UGA will win the SEC EAST on the heels of a disastrous 6-7 campaign??? Yes – if the SEC is as bad as it was last year.

We will beat Boise but will lose to SC because they have better athletes than we do in most positions. We will not win the East
It wont be 45-13 like 2005 but Georgia will win.
Last year was a train wreck from the get go. Forget about it.
It will take until 2012 on into 2013 for the S&C program to get us up to the level of Bama, LSU and now Arkansas but we will be better and more athletic than Boise. Don’t give me anything about VT. You won on the last drive against a defense that was starting 9 new players and lost the next week to a high school team.

When Spurrier left….he hardly recurited at all the last year at Florida…..there was hardly anything left for Zook. The cubbage was bare….and Zook went out and recruited his behind end off….but could not coach up that talent over the next 3 years.
On the other hand……Meyer left with top 10 recruiting classes for the last 3 years….including one of the best recuiting classes in history two years ago. Muschamp then put together and excellent class last year. Muschamp has tons of talent in Gainesvile just waiting to be coached….and it is.
The main problem at Florida right now has been some attritiion due injuries, bad behavior, and transfers of some 3rd string type players……but the main problem is at QB with Brantley. But Meyer, Muschamp, and Weis recruited the QB position extremely well last year with Driskell and Brissett….and they already had Murphy. So, the problem is on the way to being fixed. Driskell can really play and only needs experience. Brissett is a NFL type thrower according to Weis. Murphy is an exceptional athlete with a strong arm. Really doesn’t fit Weis’ offense though. But he will be a great change of pace QB next year…..and might end up beating out Brantley next year and play one year before Driskell and/or Brissett take over in 2012. The Gators have excellent talen in Gainesville….and based on commits so far this year….Muschamp is putting together one of the top recruiting classes in the country….which he probably will do every year. Difference is…..between him and Zook…..Muschamp has much better head coaching leadership and organizational skills (just look at the coaching staff he went out and hired this year)…..and I think, like Meyer, he will do a lot with the talent he has and what he brings in. Meyer didn’t leave because of a lack of talent in Gainesville. He left for personal reasons related to dire family problems that needed to be resolved….and he could not coach and do that.

@Charles: DawginLex is correct. Dobbs is the guy I spoke with about Crowell and he tells me the exact opposite of you. He may mature but he is not mature. Handing the keys to the kingdom by just allowing him to play and not WORKING to get on the field is not going to help the kid develop mentally. We all know he is gifted physically but he lacks the mental capability to handle the adversity that the SEC will throw his way. Not saying he is stupid, but a 18yo with an enormous amout of hype makes things difficult to keep in perspective.
I hope like heck I am wrong and get to trumpet it at the end of the season, but right now he might be best as a red shirt, which is exactly what would happen if Richt’s seat wasn’t so freaking hot.

Boise in ATL nice blog @ 3:10 one thing that I try and remember and all fans should. This us a new season coming with major changes coming up for most teams in terms of personnel and team chemistry and in college ball it can have huge impacts on the programs. I agree that Boise last year played with a lot of disciple and are well coached. However if your giving away a lot in size and overall athletic ability I think you can’t bank on that in the first game of the season. My biggest concern for UGA vs Boise is the lack of time the OL will have to jell as a unit. Frankly if we were healthy and playing the 3 or 4th week I think we could steam roll Boise, however with NO game experience as a unit I see this being a very close game and I think turnovers and special teams will be a huge part of deciding the outcome…

There will soon come a day when that all time record will no longer be in Georgia’s favor either. Just a matter of time. Florida’s football program is just…..simply…..a higher teir program than Georgia….right now…and in the future. Chuck UGA – In those three losses you referenced – UGA was being out played and out muscled in all of those games.
UGA was lucky to be in the game with SC – and they dominated the 4Q – ran away with the game.
Same with MS STATE – they were just the better team and UGA was NO match in the 4Q.
Colorado – UGA looked like they were going to blow out Colorado – then let them back in. Colorado owned UGA in the second half and created the King fumble with good defense and backfield penetration. Where was UGA’s defense and backfield penetration????
I guess they – and DawginLex were too busy admiring how much more athletic they were versus the opponent that was getting ready to beat them.
I haved loved living in ATL as it is college football heaven – year round with so many proud programs in the south and in the heart of the SEC. The passion is unreal – but it clouds reality.
As a nonprejusdiced observer – I think that most fans down here can be blind to reality – it’s human nature.
The reality of UGA since I have been here the last three years is UGA has been undisciplined and has not played team ball – they have had great potential – but really – just another proud school trying to be above the PARITY PACK like Clemson.
Beyond the Boise game – I will root for UGA – have been to Athens and to GT to a couple of games as well seen games at Auburn, Clemson and Knoxville. Falcon games are fun – but nothing compared to the college football scene down south.
As for UGA – the defense will be better – but will still need work, the O-Line is a mess – maybe the Strength and Conditioning will help – but they need to be cerebral and have attitude. I see nothing special about your WR corp – but if they play unselfish – this can be a great thing. And to be honest – King and Ealey being gone eliminates bad history and distraction. So, not as concerned about your RB’s as others – they will be fine.
Question is leadership – coaching, recruiting the right pieces of the puzzle, player development – physically and mentally, game day prep for players and game planning for coaches – and game day adjustments.
There is NO reason that UGA should not be a top 15 team in most years – with an occasional blip in a rebuild year like a QB change. This program has not been managed. Maybe Richt learned something these last two years – but my lord – what a stadium and what resources and support UGA has. Yep – it’s fun to have a school like UGA near by – and best of luck the rest of the season.

@Boise in ATL: The difference in all these games is you were the underdog and the other team had the target, shoe is on the other foot now so we’ll see how the crown wears for you guys. I see you rambled off quite a list of wins but how many of those were against the SEC? We are preparing for you guys and USC almost exclusively, which will suprise you about how WE can play as motivated team as well. We are now the ones with chips on our shoulders. Talk about being disrespected, Boise freakin St. is now talking trash about how they are going to win (and rightfully so).
To answer all the stuff about UCF in the whatever bowl it was: Do you remember how our recruitting season ended? We were already busy looking towards next year by sealing the “Dream Team” and the coaches didn’t prepare the players to play. The players did note how the coaches approached the game and followed suit by not preparing either.
I would rather have the recruitting class we got than a win over UCF (although a losing season is really difficult to stomach!!!!!!!!)

Second and 3 and first down. Then, we dump one off to Charles on acrossing route or to Wooten or to Brown, down and out. Let them do the final damage …………….TD !!!
Boo is a straight ahead, hard, bruising runner that can do what King and Ealey would not do, which is to pull a leg away from the tackler. He will excell in this. The other two backs bring their skill set and UGA ought to be just fine and w.o. the poison of ealey and king.

History suggests that the UGA-Florida series will swing back forth like a pendulum.
Time will tell. In my HS and UGA days in the mid 60s, early 70s and later in the 80s, we owned Florida and defeated them a couple of times when they were number 1 and they did not score ……………10-0. It will reverse, this last 20 year history. It is what it is.
My paternal side family are all Floridians and Gators and one cousin actually played LB with Spurrier in his day. Steve also could kick FGs and punt.

There’s absolutely no way Crowell will be redshirted. I see him every week and although the first week he got in Athens he was somewhat behind in conditioning, that changed almost immediately. Not only is he an EXTREMELY hard worker in the weight room, he’s taking the new opportunity of starting immediately very seriously. My friends on the team say he is the real deal and as long as he stays healthy, he should be effective out of the gate. However you did make one true statement, he is being led around campus by no less than 3 athletic association liasons whom:
1. Make sure he gets to every practice
2. Stays out of any trouble
3. Is prepared in all of his classes he is about to begin.
In sum, I wouldn’t believe all the negative vibes you’ve been hearing unless you see and meet him in person. Crowell will play this year, and should be a great contributor to the backs.

Snoop likes the fact that Boo is going to weigh in at 220 pounds of steaming energy. We need to play power football. Carlton Thomas, the little 5-7 midget weighing in at 160 soaking wet is a joke and probably just motivates the defensive end as much as waving a piece of red meat in front of a tiger would do.
Boo might actually be our saving grace this year along with Samuels if Samuels can just protect the ball a little. Crowell sounds so far like he’s got a lot of potential attitude problems like King and Ealey did. To his credit, however, he did close up his Facebook page so everyone can’t see the stone age writing on it. He’s Hollywood never having run a single down of college football. If he pans out, I’m looking at this as manna from heaven. Barring such a miracle, however, it will be Boo and Samuels, and I like the prospect of two hefty sized backs along with Figgins back there kicking arse and making the opposing defense regret trying to blitz…

I have been sitting here reading a lot of posts and agree with some of them. One thing that UGA has this year is as someone already stated, “a chip” and that’s a good thing. You guys that are bashing IC are obviously not Dawg fans.
I do wish that Boo could heal completely; didn’t he break his collarbone in the playoffs of his Sr. year? I like Boo a lot and expect big things out of him. No way IC gets redshirted.
One thing Boise has is a good coaching staff and that in itself is hard to beat but I think UGA is ready.

Why so fixated on last year?
Pettus and Young are gone
so is Winterzyck
We had no nose tackles on campus last year trying to run a 3-4 for the first time.
Go back and look at Florida in 2007-we scored 42 points on their young defense
2008-same team, we score 10
To say that georgia’s defense won’t be light year’s better in year two borders on insanity.
To say Aaron Murray doesn’t know the playbook much better than 2010 borders on insanity
This is not VT. VT plays in the ACC and was destroyed by stanford in its bowl game and lost to a high school team the week after you beat them on the final drive of the game.
Georgia will win this game.

I don’t see UGA beating down the door to play VT. Stanford had the Best QB in the nation last year too. Cam can’t hold a candle to Luck as a QB.
The UGA BSU game should be a good one.

Thanks Still@thebar. Sorry to hear that about Crowell’s Facebook. Are you sure that wasn’t an entry by Caleb King or Washon? If was Crowell, he might need some tudoring prior to enrolling in English 100 this Fall… How is Murray going to explain the plays to him in the huddle?

Still@the BAR – thank you!
WDE – you are right – if UGA plays as a team – then their athletic ability will be an asset and we could be in trouble. If UGA thinks they will win because they are better athletically – then Boise will win. UGA needs to function as one and be focussed during summer camp – this is where UGA will either win or lose the game.
DawginLex – if UGA plays as a team – Boise could be be in trouble. VT game was incredible – we came out on fire and VT crawled back in it and owned us. However, we owned the 2nd half of the 4Q – and got the victory. Hey – enjoy reading your posts – fun to mix it up with you.
for UGA’s sale – I hope 2010 was a fluke for UGA – your team had a lot going on with O-Line issues, RB issues, WR suspension – New defense breaking in – new D- Staff – No Nose Tackle.
Nate the Great – Excuses Excuses – UGA should have beaten UCF. If the UGA staff focussed on recruiting and other stuff outside the bowl – then what a dis-service to all UGA fans and alumni that spent the money to travel and support the Dogs at the bowl game – and who took time out of their day to root for their team on TV or radio. A very poor job indeed and Richt is lucky to have a job – what an horrible game and not going for it on 4th and inches inside the UCF 5 yard line was about as gutless a call I have witnessed in years. I told my friends that UGA just sent a horrible message to their OLINE, the team and fans with that call – and a powerfull message to UCF that UGA did not come to play.
atl x – Excuses Excusses – why is it that poor teams do not get the breaks but good teams do? UGA fumbling was not poor breaks – it was lack of focus and being prepared – or maybe hard hitting by the opponent.

Too bad you’re 53, because at your height and weight, and can still run, I’d vote to have you start at RB against Boise State. Thanks for being a good dawg fan. You Bozo’s are amazing, two years ago, you were so ready to get Samuels out of the backfield, that you welcomed Washaun Ealey with open arms, gave him the key to the city, and proclaimed him the next Herschel Walker(folks that ain’t happening) now we bring Samuels back and you people say he’s the answer. This is your solution right here, put him at fullback, Malcome and Crowell at Tailback(Crowell is considered anywhere from #1 to #4 nationally at Tailback) and let them Horses run. This team has talent everywhere and they know they’ve gotta win. If not, can Athens say Charlie Strong? The most important change that nobody is really paying attention to is the D Line, we’ve got the best noseguard in juco coming, Geathers is a beast, and he showed it during the spring. Theres also bigger stronger Linebackers who can bring the blitz, and a secondary that is really two deep at every position. Oh, and Garrison Smith and T.J. Stripling have grown up, and are ready to produce. I’m telling the whole SEC that this is the year that Georgia shocks not only the SEC, but the nation Mark Richt’s only problem come game day is should he redshirt LeMay. He’s gonna have two freshmen WR’s who will get playing time in Scott, and Conley, and Boise State want know what hit them. South Carolina, who was only 9-5 last year ain’t the team people think they are. Lattimore, if you look at there last four games was hurting, and worn down. Garcia is shaky at best, and Georgia, as pathetic as they played last year against SC actually had a chance to beat them. Laugh now, but know this I’ll be back laughing in December when the SEC Championship is played, and it;s in our own backyard.Sissssssssssies!

Still@ the bar What about Georgia asking the Big Ten teams for a home and home? Sure the DAWGS will get a cupcake or two, but so is everyone else. I would bet VT would turn Georgia down flat. Lex-
I hope your just spit-ballin’ and not really serious about Crowell red-shirting. That would change my whole opinion of you.
Why would we want to sit the kind of talent that IC brings to our offense? You do realize the kind of mistake we made the last time that kind of mentality was instituted by the coaching staff, right?
Does the name Knowshon Moreno sound at all familiar to you?
I respect your opinion 99% of the time, but on this one you fumbled during the exchange, dude.
We have got to stop this tentative, tip-toeing around the league and start playing to win instead of playing not to lose!
Are we going to run with the Big Dawgs or lay around under the porch with the bitches and puppies?
True freshman or not, the best players should always be on the field.
Always.

RS’ing Knowshon was 100% the right thing to do, and IF Crowel was sitting 4th string at the end of camp, not getting in , and not ready physically, with no chance of playing behind 3 future NFL RBs too, it would be for him.. He’s not, so he’ll play, like W.Ealey, like T. Brown, like K.Lumpkin did as TFrosh.

Everyone needs to back off Isaiah Crowell. I have been reading this info, and I seriously doubt that any of you out there have ever worked first hand with tremendously talented athletes that come from tough, challenging backgrounds! It is a different world, and you all obviously do not have a clue. Crowell’s development will take time. Mark Richt is the perfect man to rebuild Crowell considering the challenge he’s had having come from inner city Columbus. I taught and coached football in inner city Atlanta, so I know these kids’ plight. So I am so tired of all the attacking of character upon kids that have never had a chance to overcome their difficulties considering where they come from! They have grown up in terrible, sometimes horrific, backgrounds. They have seen things that we all from the rural South will never know. It’s sad that Isaiah Crowell couldn’t have grown up playing for Walton High, Calhoun High, Marist High, Brookwood High or Dalton High School so that he’d be where you all want him to be as far as with his spirit, personality, and developement. Saddly enough, that didn’t happen. So, we have to take Crowell where he is – and develop him. Allow Richt to develop Crowell, and stop expecting Isaiah to come out playing wide open as if he had spent four years with elite Westminster High School! I am just fed up with these fans that just don’t understand…..? We may have a Mike Rozier on our hands in Crowell, but fans have strange expectations of a particular player based upon his history, his past, or which side of the railroad tracks he grew up on. And with that, I am going to trust in Richt on this, as I know where Richt places his trust – which is with God All Mighty! And that is enough for me! We will have a very good year, and Isaiah Crowell (6-0, 200) will use his 4.32 40 to breakaway SOON! You can’t coach 4.32 in the forty! I can’t wait! GO ISAIAH!

–Samuel, Crowell and Malcome will probably all get carries. Wouldn’t worry too much about Crowell in these very early adjustment days…remember very early on somewhere around this time of year, more or less, Coach Vince Dooley said he was “afraid” that Herschel Walker was just a “big, stiff back.” Not saying that Crowell will be the second coming of Herschel, but many people do have to go through adjustment periods in their lives before they bloom.

malcome is getting a lot of hype for someone may not get any carries. After ealey left he was fourth on the depth chart. I imagine with king home and Samuel being put in the mix, Samuel jumps to one or two and malcome stays at number 4. When crowell gets here, if he can learn the system and how to block probably jumps him. I seriously think crowell will be red shirted, unless he is the next hershal walker or maybe knowshon. He will have to be great to play, we already have good. Samuel will start. Walkon sophomore brandon harton will probably be the two punch against boise state. Barton according to coach richt was the best back this spring, and may be the fastest back. Barton played receiver last year and is just starting to learn the system at Rb and has already passed malcome who is in his second year. I look for the depth chart to look like Samuel, Harton, Thomas, Cromwell, Malcome, with malcome getting carries over crowell unless he can jump to the top one or two spots by the first game, with the potential to take the starting job.

Our problem has not been running backs, it’s been o-line. And the biggest switch this season won’t be Samuel but Justin Anderson. He hasn’t shown the ability to do anything since arriving and now he’s the starting right tackle? Good luck Aaron Murray. I have the feeling you’ll be throwing off your back foot a lot this year and heaving it to some unproven receivers. And good luck to whomever tries to find a hole. All the running in the world won’t get this thin line ready for SEC play. It’s not 1976 anymore JT2. Maybe you should stick with the VHS.

I am a little excited to see this group of tailbacks on the field and what they may or may not be able to do. I believe that this group with Malcome, Samuels, Thomas, Crowell, and Boykin or Smith thrown into the mix will be a competitive and solid combination of backs for Georgia. I hope some of the other lesser known backs get playing time and get an opportunity to showcase their abilities.
I hope that Ealey and King do well and wish them the very best. I can”t help but to say, I’m glad they are not at Georgia anymore. I like the group we have now, much less antics overall. If the guys will bond tightly and give it their all – there’s no telling what may happen? I believe that they have the talent to make this a special running back year for GEORGIA.
It would be nice for this group to maybe look at some film of the great backs that played at Georgia as individuals (Walker, Moreno, Tate, Brown and others) and as a group such as the “Freshmen Connection” backs of the late 80’s or early 90’s. (Great group of backs!!!).
I wish Georgia the very best and my football love for the Georgia program is as strong as it was in the early 1970’s.
GO DAWGS!!!

I would say that the pre-season camp will go a long way in establishing who will be toting the rock for UGA come opening day. I bet there are not two people on here, that even know much about the S and C program and how it has helped the folks on the UGA team. I know, just what I read and not a lot has come out about it. The players interviewed seem to think it is good but mighty hard on them, but the good players are sticking with it, so who knows how much effect it is having on the team.
Experience and maturity will be a factor in UGA’s success this year, but I would not discount, heart, being in shape, and willingness to succeed, either. UGA has holes to fill, and can insert good young men, but experience is gotten on the field. UGA’s season will depend on a lot of youngsters and first year players, gaining that experience quickly.
Having said all that, I don’t think the Malcome of the past, will be any indication of the Malcome in the games this year. I think the same goes for Samuel. Crowell is young and will learn but there is no doubting his athletic skills.
Let the games begin.

Not Quite Yet,
It means potential and I don’t know how else, you could recruit if you didn’t look at what they did in High School. You hope that it carries over into the college they play for, but nobody has anyway of knowing until the games begin. This young man, if he can stay healthy and hold onto the ball, has a lot of potential. He is tough, runs fast, and likes the contact. He has the makings of a potentially good RB.
