SEC Media Days: Issues, investigations, predictions and coaches on hot seats

On my way to Hoover. I wrote this for tomorrow’s print section, but you get to see it first! . . .

Georgia coach Mark Richt won't have to guess which question he'll be asked about most at SEC Football Media Days this week. (AJC photo)

WHAT YOU’LL HEAR AT SEC FOOTBALL MEDIA DAYS

College football fans rejoice! As of this week, you can officially pronounce the 2011 season underway. No, the actual games don’t kickoff for another six weeks. But the intriguing ritual of preseason propaganda and prognostication begins in earnest today in Hoover, Ala., as SEC Football Media Days gets underway at the Wynfrey Hotel. The SEC will tell us why it’s the greatest conference on earth and provide statistical data to prove it and coaches will tell us why things aren’t as bad – or as good – as they seem, depending on their teams’ particular perspective this season. In anticipation of this exciting annual exchange between teams and the media, here are five things you’re likely to hear about after the event commences Wednesday afternoon.

1. ISSUES AND INVESTIGATIONS: The newly-discovered coaching skill set of “roster management” – aka over-signing — was the dominant topic at the SEC Meetings in Destin in May and there will surely be some residual discussion this week. But the most prominent topic in Hoover will be, or at least should be, the tarnished image of college football amid multiple scandals. We know now, thanks to some excellent reporting by Pete Thamel of the New York Times, that the NCAA’s investigation of BCS champion Auburn continues. On Tuesday, LSU got hit with a year’s probation and recruiting restrictions from the NCAA infractions committee on Tuesday; Tennessee is up next with that group in August; South Carolina received a letter of inquiry this time last year and we’ve heard little since; and Georgia is in the midst of an internal inquiry. Add in the nationally-covered scandals at Ohio State, Southern Cal and Oregon and it’s a good bet this will generate some substantial dialogue this week.

2. MARK RICHT’S WARM BACKSIDE. The Georgia Bulldogs are one of the first teams up on Thursday and the topic du jour most assuredly will be, “Is Mark Richt on the hotseat and, if so, how hot is it?” That question has been bandied about to varying degrees by fans and media alike hundreds of times since Georgia got off to a 1-4 start last season and finished 6-7. For the record, the powers to be at UGA have shown nothing but support for the Bulldogs’ 11th-year coach — “He’s not in my hot seat; he’s still in my lap,” longtime executive board member Bob Bishop said in May. But it’s unlikely Richt will encounter such compassion from the grizzled SEC press, who are doggedly determined to identify those those best suited for their “Coaches on Hotseat” lists in tomorrow’s column. Richt won’t be alone in this distinction. Houston Nutt of Ole Miss will be right there with him.

3. ROCK-STAR COACHES: Speaking of Richt and his supposed warm backside, it’s always about the coaches at SEC Media Days. The SEC is the indisputable powerhouse conference of college football and it produces star players and NFL draft picks galore. But it’s never clearer than when the media assembles in the cavernous ballrooms of the Wynfrey Hotel that coaches are the ruling party of this kingdom. Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Bobby Petrino and Les Miles are ushered about like movies stars complete with trailing paparazzi, fawning fans and curious, clamoring reporters. We’ll also hear about the new additions to this exclusive fraternity, Florida’s Will Muschamp and Vanderbilt’s James Franklin. Well, at least one of those.

4. MIGHTY, MIGHTY GAMECOCKS. South Carolina is in the extremely rare position of being the prohibitive favorite to win the East (gonna be a close call between Alabama and LSU in the West). That’s a long-awaited and supremely-coveted place to be for Spurrier, who is in constant need of fuel for his thirsty ego. And the ever-thirsty media will be primed to lap up Spurrier’s quip bombs on hot topics such as over-signing, paying student-athletes out of his own pocket and how to suspend players without them actually having to miss games (see quarterback Stephen Garcia).

5. GREAT RUNNING BACKS: As usual, the league is loaded with elite running backs. Some of them you’ve heard a lot about, such as South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore, Auburn’s Michael Dyer and Alabama’s Trent Richardson; others not so much, such as Arkansas’ Knile Davis, the league’s leading returning rusher with 1,322 yards; Vick Ballard, the bulldozer from Mississippi State; and Tennessee’s Tauren Poole, the senior from Toccoa who quietly busted 1,000 yards a year ago. Georgia’s Washaun Ealey and Caleb King would have been brought up in this conversation but, of course, they’re gone. Something tells me Richard Samuel might get shut out on the all-conference ballot.

I amnot getting any hopes up for the Dawgs this year.

here we go again…….
– questions about our O-Line
– RB questions – no return players of any significance
– WR’s – what WR?

But hey – we got a QB and TE’s.

Defense? should be much improved – but I swear we play with Low football IQ.
We may be fast and big and strong – but stupid.

Sorry fellas – but the losses to SC and MS STATE – OT to a bad Gator team did damage to my confidence in this staff – the Colorado loss and the UCF loss were just embarrassing.

I understand things go in cycles – but 8-5 and 6-7 – both records could have been worse – has lead me to believe that a change in leadership of this program is something that we need to be thinking about.

I am rooting for Richt – but the bottom line is that this group of players have not been disciplined on and off the field and do not play as a team – and it shows on the field.

What do Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Mississippi State and South Carolina have in common? Their football programs have passed UGA and left us in the dust. This is on Richt.

UGA asks for support, donations and money money money.

If UGA starts 0-2 – gets beat by Mississippi State and Florida – I will be done with Richt and this staff.

Did you miss the point Hit A Single, it wasn’t that Richt went to Hondouras, or anywhere for that matter. Just that he, as the “Head Coach” hasn’t addressed a single issue since his return. It’s been McGarity putting out the statements.

jordan – 10:33 post – good article.
Your #2 worst hire – Zook – was 2-1 vs Richt.
Your #1 worst hire – Kiffin – was 1-0 against Richt as the Vols crushed UGA in huge blow out fashion.

Really rooting for UGA – but will not be surprised if we are 7-5 – 8-4 this year.

Probable Losses: Boise St., South Carolina, Mississippi St,, Florida
50/50 – Tennessee, Auburn, GT
Wins: Coastal Carolina, Ole Miss, Vandy, New Mex St., KY.

Tennessee at Knoxville – - Vols young – but dangerous. If we were to play them at the end of the season last year – they would have beaten us.

Auburn – lost many players – but have great young talent stepping in. UGA should win this game However, count on UGA totally blowing a game against a team they should beat each year.

As mentioned many times before, all CMR must do is be in the top 10 recruiting every year, even if the recurits do nothing, and beat Tech. Simple. UGA fans don’t care what the recruits do on the field but they must be 5 star recruits.

There are very good Coaches in the SEC. Richt has been beaten by them handily of late, Spurrier could beat Richt if the talent is even. It’s even now. We will see what happens with that. I don’t see BoBo out play calling Spurrier. Same for Fla. Ala. Ak. Miss state. The rest are even at best. You just have to be a damn good coach whom is very hard working in this league now. Richt belongs in the ACC or some equal conference where the fans don’t much care about his work ethic! He can win there and still go on his church outings and live happy ever after. These Coaches want the big bucks then go on vacation and home for dinner every night. Couple million, big deal!!!

Atlanta Westlakw’s CHANCE WARMACK (Left Guard- Alabama, Started as a Freshman with Carpenter on Alabama’s National Championship team, Will be a 4yr. starter if he doesn’t declare!), Atlanta’s MLK’s A.J. panther,
we couldnt possibly go 5-8 you idiot. you have to have 6 wins to qualify for a bowl game (13th game)

furthermore, i think we have seven guaranteed wins: new mexico st, vandy, tenn, kentucky, tech, ole miss, and whoever the other cream puff is. tenn is iffy but we beat the tar outta them last year and i dont see a change this year.

other possible wins are miss st, auburn, and florida. these three are very possible because miss st and auburn are in athens where we will want revenge and auburn has lost everybody from last year and i just think miss st wont have as a good a year this year. florida is rebuiliding and they also lost a lot of talent off that defense that has killed us lately. whole new coaching staff is gonna have an effect

unlikely wins: boise and south carolina
back to back games to start the season. crowell wont be mid season form and i just see much slimmer chances of winning these two games than the others.

the schedule sets up well for us guys…i predict 9-3. if we beat s car we go to atlanta, if we lost..we get outback bowl or something of that sort

Bryant-3 10 win seasons in his first 20 years. 6 more of those same 20 years he won 6 or less games…..

Dooley-3 10 win seasons in his first 16 years, then Herschel arrived

Paterno-6 10 win seasons in first 10 years!

Bowden-2 10 win seasons in first 10 years (not counting several years where he was first a head coach at Howard where they played 9 game seasons)

Mark Richt-6 10 WIN SEASONS in 1st 10 YEARS as a head coach!

ONLY Mark Richt and Paterno! The others did HALF as well. Does this show you haters how silly and ignorant and DUMB you are and that you need to keep yor mouth shut and maybe, just maybe do an ABOUT face and SUPPPORT Richt with EVERYTHING you got before you run one of the BEST coaches in NCAA HISTORY out of ATHENS!

Everybody EXPECTED the last 2 years to be down years with Cox at QB and Moreno gone. Then a new freshman QB and New defense and coaches last year plus a weak OL. Last year was a FLUKE and UGA EASILY could have lost only 2 games STILL last year without bad breaks and suspensions. so 6 and 6 was not expected but understandable. The bowl game was TOTALLY Bobo’s fault. All games UGA could have won or were in position to win except the Auburn game but bad breaks, untimely turnovers and penalties and terrible calls by the refs at the WORST time and UGA could have went 9-3, 10-2 or 11-1. Last year was a fluke. Every team goes through a tough spell. UGA is now BACK so PLEASE DO NOT jump back on the UGA or Mark RIcht bandwagon these next 5 YEARS while we are back to winning 10 plus games a year and SEC championships. OK?

Bobo may need to go but Richt? NEVER!

OH I forgot to include the current “king” Saban. His first 10 years he had 1 10 win season and no National Championship. Richt’s record is MUCH better at 10 years! He had 2 10 wins in first 12 years then he went to Bama. Where he had 3 straight after the first year there. So he still has one less than Richt but in about as twice as many years as a head coach.

Bobo might need to go but Richt? Never!

Compare Richt’s record in his first 10 years as a head coach to ANY coach in history. I dare you. I dare you. I dare you. If you do you will have to ADMIT that maybe you were in the dark and WRONG. Support Mark Richt you “so-called” and uninformed “fans”.

Look at the WHOLE picture of being a college football coach, and tell the world whether it is justifiable that it has been as hot in the “media” as it has been and is? Would UGA be fools to get rid of Richt if he goes 7-5 when the WHOLE story is out there in black and white. Compare Richts record to anyones in their first 10 years and then PLEASE write an article that supports him strongly and rebukes the ones calling for his head instead of one about all the comments and mood of the ignorant immature “fair-weathered” fans who cant see the forest for the trees but do a whole lot of barking.

I really don’t get some of you, so-called, UGA fans. What is it, you think that if you poor-mouth and criticize enough, and if you can set your own expectations low enough, you won’t be disappointed? Are you so upset with past disappointments that you’re willing to do anything to turn the heat up under Richt’s ’seat’ in the belief that being rid of him will somehow change your disappointments into whatever it is you want? Or are you all just a pack of nothing-to-do-with-your-time trolls that have decided that they’ll see what they can do to tear-down and good man and a proud group of program loyalists.? We don’t go around challenging the fan loyalties of other schools, why do you get such glee in attacking ours?

I choose to be optimistic about our chances and am unabashedly pulling for Mark Richt and his coaches and players to have every success possible. I’m looking forward to sending Boise State back to ‘blue-land’ mumbling – ‘we really did think we were something special’…and Spurrier and USC back to Columbia battered and bruised, and losers (of course it won’t shut Steve Superior up, but at least he’ll have to re-think his ‘hang fifty on Georgia in Athens’ comment…then to tear through the rest of the schedule, including putting a real rumble through the GatorNation that will spur the ‘Fire Muschamp’ sites to new heights…then to go back to the Dome in December for a nice little ‘book-end’ to the ‘regular’ season…and finally a BCS bowl and a victory over some team that actually thinks it can beat the cream of the SEC crop. Now that’s what I call having your mind right going into a season. I prefer that to expecting little just so you can say ‘I told you so.’ come the end of the season.

There is no great back for the Dawgs and it is a pathetic outrage. UGA no longer has its traditional legacy at running back under the current coaching staff. It has been replaced with a new legacy of infamy that features suspensions, flunk outs, underachievers, overachievers, quitters, prima-donnas/divas and position flip-floppers at the position. All the delusional kool-aid guzzlers want to talk about is overall wins and losses, & meaningless stats and not the fact that the last three years UGA is in decline and the Dawgs have been mediocre. The coaching and leadership at the position gets the grade of “I”, for incompetence on and off the field. There is an undercurrent of dissension on this football team and it will continue to reflect in ball games this season as it has all summer. The problem at the root on offense is you have a distracted head coach who is in has-been status himself as an evaluator of talent as well as coordinator, turning over the complete offense to a guy that is only an average QB coach, who has no prior experience at any program at any level as an offensive coordinator. The SEC is no place for on the job training at OC if you want to win championships. Then you have an O-line that is thin on depth, that can only hold blocks barely long enough to get passes off. The staff can’t seem to commit to teaching the finesse O-line to execute hard nosed, smashmouthed, sustained run blocks to pave routes for the running game. That’s right UGA is totally soft offensively, which is reflective of the mentality of the ”you betta not curse at ‘em” mentality of the coaching staff. Was Thomas suspended because Richt caught him cussin’ red-handed !!? LOL. Next the #2 recruiting program the past ten years, has recently brought in highly recruited prima-donnas and divas types that are really soft guys that lack the hardcore mentality needed to be a respected SEC running back. When I got a first glance at the latest Herschel to be RB, all I saw was an entitled diva, that SEC rivals CAN’T WAIT to bust up and expose as a overrated flop. But what else would you expect to come to play “RB” at UGA, with the current crew running the offense. We will never see another traditional UGA RB as the past greats playing in this offense, because this offense is not geared to run the football and a truly talented big time back would & should avoid this offense like the plague. Thus no tears were shed when WE & CK left because they were just prima-donna fumblers & cancers recruited by CMR. The team is better off with a LB that couldn’t beat them out at RB according to the intoxicated kool-aid section. This current UGA offense is set up to feature the short passing game of the Richt/Bobo braintrust, who only see their former selves at QB with the overachieving and overrated QBs they play political games to choose as the starter. Because of the established mediocrity that exists at UGA, I would not be suprised to see the team perform poorly (as they always do in Jacksonville :2-8 vs.UF.) throughout another long disappointing season. I hope I’m wrong, but here’s some advice to CMR since he has virtually eliminated the running attack at UGA. Get Bobo to get Lemay plenty of reps besides Murray because without a solid O-line and ground game with blocking RBs, the starting QB is going down and going down hard !! When AM finally gets knocked out, CL can come in and lead the offense. So don’t worry about the RBs now CMR, because you never have worried about establishing the run to pass. But you better have the best no. 2 & 3 QBs on the roster ready when the time comes. Trust me, that time is coming real soon. So try to wake up, delusional UGa fans and CMR staff the job make or break player on offense won’t be a RB. It maybe whoever survives playing QB. More giant cups of mediocrity hunch-punch this season should make all the drunken kool-aid reprobates and CMR worshippers very happy.

“CaneDawg,”

A paragraph is a beautiful thing.

Columbus,

Nice stats on Richt and I hope this fine man turns it around and is our coach until he retires. Good, solid men like Richt–as compared to liars like Saban and quitters like Petrino–we should all want to be successful as he exemplifies class, standards, values, morals and the priorities and balance we should all strive for.

However…

Unlike the Bryant or Dooley eras we are now in an era of instant gratification with minimal patience and tolerance. Thus, despite his many great accomplishments, Richt will need to show a lot of improvement this year to fend off the wolves.

I think his biggest weakness is his loyalty; a great quality in one’s personal life, but in one’s professional life can be risky if such loyalty blinds you to the truth. Add the truth is that hanging on to Willie Martinez–and now Mike Bobo–too long just may prove fatal. In business–and college football has a business component–you can’t let loyalty supersede results!

I hope Coach Richt has a solid season…I, for one, WANT this man to succeed!

CMR hasn’t forgotten how to coach and this season will show that for the record.

AJ Green sells a jersey – Richt’s fault

I know a lot of Dawg Fans take shots at Tide Roll but he happens to be correct about our o-line and the missed opportunities over the last 10 years with our football team. Football games and championships are won in the trenches about 95% of the time or there abouts and quite frankly this finesse offense and defense we have played IMHO has cost us at least 2 SEC championships and MNC- 2002 and 2007 for MNC and SEC titles in 2003, 2007 and 2008. That is only my opinion but I believe it is based in fact. Anyway I hope and pray we see a changed Coach Richt and we see a dominating team on both the o-line and d-lines this year and coming years.

Go Dawgs (required to get posted- not “moderated) CMR should be on hot seat but has early potential to turn down heat with wins over Boise and SC. Should not happen, but with college kids you never know. SC has the talent on both sides of the ball (look at preseason all-sec picks). Man, I hope it pans out! UGA probably gets skinned alive by boise but will play SC tough at home because so much will be riding on that game. Will home field advantage be enough for Dawgs to beat SC? Probably not as lattimore is the countries best player! SC may be favored over UGA in Athens- that alone should put CMR on hot seat.

Georgia tek did not cooperate November 11, 2009 or any day including today.

Appeal would be further sanctimonious attitudes on Georgia tek’s part versus The NCAA.

The Committee on Infractions warns, once again, in plain English to Georgia tek that if there is an Appeal, that they can and will come down even harder on Georgia tek.

You failed to cooperate and still are failing to cooperate – and, as Ken Sequoia of the AJ-C says here at the AJ-C on the Georgia tek blog this morning : for a school who is back-to-back NCAA PROBATION in FOOTBALL for MAJOR VIOLATIONS.

You hit the nail on the head about Steve Spurious’ “constant need of fuel for his thirsty ego.” As usual he will be, in effect, jumping up and down saying “notice me!”

I can’t wait for the season to start. I am in awe here of just how many football experts there are in this country. Let’s face it, nobody on here knows for sure how any of the games will end up yet. We all know how we want them to end up, but football is a strange game. Emotions and heart of the players sometimes go a long way, towards deciding the outcome. The kids will play the game and the coaches will coach them, so it is always fun to see, all the experts resort to name calling and all of the made up statistics you see on here. But when all is said and done, the scoreboard will prove some wrong and some right. I am just going to enjoy the games, because I enjoy the sport. I am tired of all the media days, coaches meetings and the NCAA coming up with this and that. The old saying goes, opinions are like butt holes, everybody has one. Let the Games begin.

Georgia is a mess. This “positive” spin is bs. Those who know…know.

Bobby Petrino is ushered about like a rock star? That sack of mud hasn’t done anything in the SEC yet. It will be along time, if ever, when that turd Petrino ever pulls even with CMR in SEC wins.

VADAWG, I just saw a video. Either Henry is a freak or the defenses he faced were all running in clogs. He reminds me of Chris Brown of the Sooners/Titans. He runs too tall for my taste (he is 6′3″), but that can be fixed or he could be recast as a WR. He’s got a T.O. body and shoves defenders around in space. Another weapon for sure.

In my opinion, every coach in the super competitive SEC is on some form of a hot seat every year because they must win. Guys like Saban, Spurrier, Miles and (Yes) Richt handle it well. Meyer imploded due to the pressure which ruined last years team because he let bozo Addazio run the stupid offense.
This year should be interesting. Perhaps we should have a contest to guess the number of times Garcia will be suspended and reinstated at SC by Spurrier. Spurrier is not the same disciplinarian as when he was at UF. If Spurrier had his old character, Garcia would have been gone 3 years ago.
It will be fun to watch, and I pick UGA to make big strides forward, UF to surprise folks and BAMA to win the SEC.

All the best to All y’all!
