Q&A: Richard Samuel says UGA career ‘full of opportunities’ (UPDATED)

Q&A WITH TAILBACK RICHARD SAMUEL

Richard Samuel walked into an interview with reporters Friday morning wearing dark blue slacks, a light blue dress shirt and tie. No, he wasn’t looking to impress a bunch of sportwriters as a resurrected tailback. He’s actually working this summer as an intern in UGA’s compliance office. And, no, he said he has “no idea” what’s going happen regarding Jarvis Jones’ eligibility. As for his recent move to tailback from linebacker, Samuel seemed very positive and upbeat about the situation. While he knows the position isn’t going to be handed to him, he did seem confident about his chances of becoming the starter before the Bulldogs’ season opener against Boise State on Sept. 3. Following is the exchange of questions and answers between Samuel and reporters covering the UGA beat:

Samuel

Samuel

Q: So what’s this week been like for you?

A: “It’s been a little confusing. I had some tough decisions to make.”

Q: Ultimately was the decision left up to you or were you told ‘this is what we need you to do?’

A: “It was more like the option or the opportunity was brought up. It was like, ‘Richard, think about this.’ We went through the scenarios of the offense and the defense and the possibility of playing. So it was like, ‘think about this and let us know what you want to do. Nobody is going to make you make a decision. It’s all up to what you want to do.’ It was totally left up to me.”

Q: Were you called up to Mark Richt’s office?

A: “Yes, it was Coach Richt. I had a feeling something was coming. You know, you hear little rumors and talk about it. It came up only after Caleb’s situation.”

Q: So you knew what was coming?

A: “I had a feeling after hearing that [Caleb King] was completely done. If you look at the history, there’s no other backs besides Carlton [Thomas] that had playing time. So something was going to have to be done.”

Q: Do you think it will be difficult to make the transition back to tailback after working so diligently to learn defense the last year or so?

A: “I still remember most of it. Yesterday was my first day in pass skel and I still remembered most of the plays and most of the blocking schemes. Everything is mostly the same.”

Q: Were you guaranteed playing time?

A: “It’s a complete competition. Like Coach said, I can’t come over and they just hand me to position. It’s straight competition. The best man’s going to play.”

Q: What tipped the scale on your decision to move back to offense?

A: “What tipped the scale was thinking I have two years left and also looking at where I am on the depth chart, my abilities and the guys that are ahead of me at linebacker on defense. And then considering the whole running back situation and the fact that there are no veteran besides Carlton playing running back. I was thinking about how can I be on the field with the most quickness, or how can I get playing time. I was thinking about that and weighing through the options. I was thinking about staying on defense and possibly rotating depending on what kind of rotation they’re going to do or go to offense where I’ve been and I’ve played and have a history playing.”

Q: How much do you weigh right now?

A: “About 238.”

Q: Do you need to lose weight?

A: “I’m OK with the weight. I just have to get back into the running back scheme, cuts and the stuff a running back should be able to do.”

Q: Did you feel like you were progressing as a linebacker?

A: “I was starting to get comfortable with it and learning the defense. I was getting used to the pass coverage. I was getting comfort with the reps I was getting. I was getting more used to it.”

Q: This is your third position change after having to decide to play running back or linebacker coming out of high school. How would you describe your UGA career to this point?

A: “I would describe my career as a career full of opportunities. I didn’t redshirt my freshman year, started my sophomore year, things weren’t going so well, decided to follow another avenue at linebacker and then redshirted last year. And then here’s another opportunity to go back to play running back and be able to do something and make changes and learn from the time I was playing running back. So it’s just another opportunity.”

Q: Has it been a frustrating process?

A: “The knee thing was the most frustrating part. The transition wasn’t that frustrating. I was able to get used to it and play some on the scout team. But the whole knee thing kept me from being on the field period.”

Q: How’s the knee now?

A: “It feels 100 percent now.”

Q: So any chance you go back to linebacker after one season?

A: “This is a two-year commitment. I’m going to end my career playing running back.”

Q: What makes you feel you’ll perform better at tailback this time?

A: “I feel like I’m more mature. I know how to look at a situation and analyze things abetter and make better decisions. Back when I was 17, I was just doing what the coaches said instead of looking outside the box to make sure I get the job done.”

Q: What do you need to improve on?

A: “I have to say play with more instincts and stop thinking so much. Not thinking so much about whether I’m on the right track or hitting the right hole or doing things so much by the book.”

Q: So now that the position change is a done deal, how do you feel?

A: “I’m more excited about it. Like I said, I’m back to something I have a history with and I kind of know. I have a good feeling about it. I’m not as stressed to learn a whole new playbook. So I’m more excited about it. I’m just excited, I don’t know how to explain it.”

Q: What did you weigh when you last played tailback?

A: “I was like 225.”

Q: Are you going to have to lose weight to play running back?

A: “No, as long as my speed and ability hasn’t decreased, Coach doesn’t care what my weight is.”

Q: What was the most you weighed after you moved to defense?

A: “The most I was was like 241 or 242. I feel like I could play at that weight. The only thing I I’m going to have to transition is getting my feet back to doing things a certain way and getting back to a running back mentality.”

Q: So what’s with the dress shirt and tie?

A: “I’m working in the compliance office.”

Q: What has that experience been like?

A: “It’s a big learning experience. There’s a lot that we take for granted. We don’t know how much planning and preparation goes into the whole traveling and making sure everybody follows the rules of preparation. There’s a lot behind the scenes that I’m learning about it.”

Q: You’re now the senior-most tailback on the roster. Do you feel like you need take on a leadership role with all the young guys back there?

A: “I feel like being the one there with the most experience is really going to help them and show them how things are done. I’ll show them that you may have the opportunity to slack but you have to take it serious. You can’t slack off on the field or in the classroom. So being there hopefully I can be some kind of role model. Hopefully, they’ll see, ‘OK, Richard does it this way. He works hard; he studies hard and it shows on the field and in his academics.’ Hopefully, I’ll be like a guide or someone they can look to instead of doing it on their own and making wrong decisions sometimes.”

Q: Is it still hard to believe you’re in this situation considering Washaun Ealey and Caleb King were here in the spring?

A: “Yeah, I feel like the whole thing, how it happened, is crazy. They were there; they were the main ones playing. So I said, ‘OK, running backs seem solidified.’ Now that they’re gone I feel like I can help the team and this will help benefit the team. It was the best decision for the team.”

Q: Has it been frustrating to always seem to be in catch-up mode at a position?

A: “Yes, I feel like it has. Some guys come in and play one position the whole time while they’re here. I’m transitioning and having to learn some things from scratch and having to pick up on some things that some others are already two or three years used to doing. It’s tough to feel like I have to put in extra work to learn what to do and also put more work in on the field to show I’m the person to get the job done.”

Q: How many position coaches have you played for now?

A: Let’s see: Ball, McClendon, Coach Grantham, Coach Olivadotti, Coach Belin. Five I think.”

oh well, i like this kid and i believe he can be a running back that can carry players over the goal line from 5 yards out. we need that king of strength and he is also fast.

RS is a DGD IMO – Looking out for the good of the TEAM! Something the preceding 2 RB’s did not/would not do! Hate that he’s having to change positions once again due to the depth – or lack thereof..

Best to you Richard!! Go Dawgs!

Well, I gota say I kinda feel better after reading this. I understand where the coaches are coming from. I guess they couldn’t predict losing both Ealy and Caleb.

Chip, I know you said it was a rough draft but I’m not sure if you intended to leave out your Q’s from your Q&A. It’s kind of confusing to read lol. But thanks for the quick post.

Wow, Chip you type like I do when you’re in a hurry.
I’m sure there will be many Dawg fans arguing both sides of this decision. The main part is this…..The Coaches let him make the decision. Good luck Richard. Play hard, run fast, Sic ‘em!

The offensive line will be the issue now. But with 6′5 260 FB Figgins & 6′2 238 Samuel, there’s got to be a hole somewhere or they’ll make one! Very powerful guys. I’m only worried about fumbles and Samuel staying healthy… Go Dawgs! Samuel is a player to emulated.

i had mixed feelings about this situation at first. I just hated that R. Sammuel was even presented with that proposal. I genuinely want to see all these guys have fine carears and move on to the nfl so they can finally be rewarded for all the hard work we all demand of them. I just think to myself–was R. Sammuel not in a better situation to maximize his abilities at the LB position. And i just ask are we putting this young man’s professional career in jeopardy because CMR can’t keep his ship in order? If R. Sammuel doesn’t capitalize–financially–from this move in the future, then CMR himself owes him a great debt of gratitude–to the tune of 250K.

For some reason i just cant help but think about the K.Tripp situation and how they handled a supremely gifted athlete’s talents. He should have playing OT from day one and been drafted–Point Blank. Instead, well, he was relegated to a backup DT role. seems like de’javu to me?

It will be interesting to see what kind of tailback Samuel makes after having spent a year with Coach Tereshinski as his strength and conditioning coach.

Congratulations to CMR, he is undefeated against Ga. Tech!

Cam Newton’s father offers his son’s services for $180,000.00 and nothing happens. A Tech player receives $300 worth of t shirts and they lose their ACC Championship. Something is very wrong with this system.

Look at the bright side of things at the moment. Georgia has a bell-weather year dead ahead. It can go either way. BUT, one can certainly make as much a case for the immediately positive outcome as for a negative outcome. Beyond this year things will be better, one way or the other. If this is Georgia’s experience with “turmoil” I’ll take it. We have neighbors in several directions in much worse shape.

Even if Samuel is no better at running the ball than he was before, surely the LB (hitting) mentality and size (238) he should be a hell of a blocker. And, I’d rather see him toting the ball on 3rd and 1 than that little feller (Thomas).

Maybe Samuel will keep his head up this time around, so he will know when to bounce it outside, or cut back. Before, if the hole wasn’t there, he just ran into the back of his OLs.

But, to be fair, he was only 17 back then.

Enough with trying to compare the Tech situation with every other issue going on with the NCAA. The reason why Tech was punished as they were was because of them trying to MANIPULATE the system. If they were straight forward with the NCAA I don’t think it would have been so severe.

To ATL Sports Fan: I have a BBA from UGA in MIS, was part of the Honor’s Program, graduated with honors, and now have two Master’s degrees: I agree with “just a little sense”: they are using Richard Samuel. The coaches have all the power: if he doesn’t do what they want, they will not let him ever play a down. I also agree with the idea about Tripp: they did keep moving him around and wasted his talent. The only reason they are moving Samuel back to RB is to fit their need — not Samuel’s need. The coaches look out for themselves not the player. Why don’t you go back and look at his tape from High School — maybe you will become enlightened — and less ignorant — and see that he was also a great LB in high school.

Mr. Dawg

July 15th, 2011
12:15 pm

It’s anybody’s guess how well Samuel would have done playing LB. What is certain is that he was second on the depth chart on defense and with the move to RB he is the only “every down” player at that postiion with any experience on the team. Based on what Samuel is saying he made the determination that he had a better opportunity to contribute to the team for the remainder of his career by making the switch back. I agreee with his decision. The Dawgs are in good shape at LB with or without him playing a back up role.

By my count we have 75 kids currently on football scholarship. At the current rate of attrition and injury, UGA could have as few as 65 scholarship football players against Boise. That pathetic number is and should be an embarrassment to all UGA Football Fans!!!!!! I don’t care how much heat CMR gets next February, he needs to sign at least 30 players.

By week 5 we are going to look like a Single A high school team coming out on the field. I have never been so down on the UGA Dawgs in my lifetime. No way should UGA only have 65 players with all the talent in this state. McGarity needs to realize we need a totally new staff that heads up recruiting. Please Dawg fans do not get your hopes up for 2011….. This is a total rebuilding project and it shouldn’t be……However, because of poor recruiting and a worse S & C program it is what it is…… This should be the year we win a MNC.

I say I hope that attitude carry’s over at TB…And by the way flat tire, tell us about the depth and experience at RB for the Gators this year. ( before he spews, they have NO ONE proven to be a RB running between the tackles in the SEC. They have a couple of light weights left over from the spread.

you put orson charles, aron white and jay rome in the mix with a three tightend set and that backfield with so many options that you can split to wide receiver as murray diagnoses the field pre-snap, and the defensive coordinators would have seisures.

It always bothered me that Samuel moved from the tailback position. I tried to remain optimistic with Ealey and King. But Samuel’s combination of speed and size is so impressive and considering the fact that he was only 17 years old as a true freshman I felt he just needed time to develop. When King left the first thing I thought of was moving him back. In fact, I for one feel better about the position going into this season now than I did with those other two lazy knuckleheads.

AltamahaDawg

Surprised they announced it without having to. I figured it was just going to be the back-up plan if forced. As I have said, I never thought he was that bad as RB, just that he was more valuable as a LB. Appearantly his real value is being a true team player.

I don’t know if this will work out well or not but I admire this kid.

He talks about setting an example for the younger running backs.

Would we ever hear Ealey or King say that?

THIS kid can be a mentor to Crowell.

Tim – Rest assured that the NCAA will not make any effort to resolve the Jarvis Jones matter with any real speed. They will intentionally drag their feet just like they did with AJ. The Alabama defensive tackle case shows how fast they can move when they want to do a team a favor, not to mention the Cam Newton reinstatement within 48 hours deal. In both those cases they acted swiftly and basically imposed no meaningful punishment. Cam missed no playing time and Darius missed two games against very poor teams that Bama was easily going to crush with or without him.

If…if….if….if….if… So many “ifs” on this team in 2011. However, Hotdawg hit it right. If Crowell can be close to the real deal, then it’s time to use both Crowell AND Samuel in the same backfield. We may see a pretty quick and strong combo here.

even with the off-season arrests in years past i can’t remember the last time i was so clueless about what to expect in that 1st game of the year. this team could be very good (10 wins) or very bad (another losing season) but at least we’ll beat tech again….

i’m starting to think 9-3 with the much improved D keeping us in games and field goal richt beating teams 13-10 type games. i’m calling losses to usce, ut, and uf.

I’m happy with the move BUT does this mean they can already tell Cowell is not ready yet. If he is what we all hope for then depth chart not looking good for Richard, next year especially. So really looking at this in with a positive view, i can honestly say I HOPE we don’t need him on O, is so it just means our pride and joy IC isn’t what we all thought. I mean we already have Malcome as a bruiser. Just saying, if IC is a beast and can handle 80% carries then we just wasted some excellent speed depth at lb!!

I just know Crowell is thrilled that Richard is back on offense. Carlton, I’m thinking maybe not so much. Boo, definitely not, as there goes almost all of his playing time. But, in the end they will all pitch in to get it done this season. WOOF!

Compare with last year

July 15th, 2011
2:05 pm

UGA backfield this year will have Samuel, Boo Malcom and of course, Carlton Thomas. Add in Crowell and take a look at them. MUCH LARGER than last year and the kind of backs, especially Boo Kenny Malcom or Richard Samuel that can bang on you and pound a little bit on you and then, we use Carlton and his special skill set.

At FB we have the former tight end at 6′5″ and around 270 to block and we have Zander Ogletree who reminds me of quick footed Pulpwood Smith, at least on the field that is. Both of these FBs love to mix it up and block.

I like the 2011 UGA backfield now and with ealey and king gone, so are the cancers.

One other thing I keep reading here is that there seems to be some idea that once Samuel is brought over to the offense that he will forget everything he learned at the LB position over the past year plus under Grantham and Olivadotti. Hogwash. Samuel was a stellar linebacker in high school (as well as a RB). If he is needed on defense later in the season because of injury and the offense is doing well, CMR will let him play wherever he is needed and Richard will do a fine job at either position.

UGAmutt

July 15th, 2011

Charles is a finesse guy who is an elite route runner and has excellent hands. Also, for a guy who is 6-4 245ish, he lacks the leg-drive and vision to churn out productive yards between the tackles with power and cuts, and does not have the elite acceleration/top end speed to be a threat outside. If we moved him to RB, you’d only see him spread to a slot, a-la Reggie Bush.

Regardless of who plays TB – UGA is a mess on the OLINE and your WR corp is nothing special.
Strength will be defense, TE and QB.
I really like UGA’s potential of your DL and I think your LB corp will be very good.

R. Samuel was a STIFF BACK – not hip wiggle – no elusiveness – no balance – your typical LB trying to be an RB. He is a bandaid until CROWELL goes through his learning curve.

Predictions:
UGA will be 8-4 at BEST – could wind up 7-5 or 6-6.
UGA will lose to Boise ST., S. Carolina, Mississippi State, Florida.
The Tennessee game is 50/50.
UGA will beat Ole Miss, Ky, Vandy, Auburn and GT

Again – boils down to having a mess at OL and I have NO respect for your WR’s.

With all that – Richt would still deserve another year – I get the feeling that UGA is building – on the up cycle if you will – I think if the fans chill -I think the SEC EAST will be a beast in 2012 with Florida, UGA, improved Tennessee and S. Carolina all having legit top 20 programs.

One last thing – how great is it to have unselfish kids like R. Samuel on your team.
This kid seems like he is what is right about college athletics.

@AL E. GATOR a pretty fair assessment of UGA…however here is where I think differently, you hit it on the head that Samuel would be playing until IC can learn the offense. I think that he would be the best possible option we have for the first game of the year. He knows the blocking assignments and has experience running the ball in the SEC…first team All-American only in the Team First role not RB, however he is still our best short term option UNLESS Boo comes on and is lights out during fall camp..like they said its a competition and the best player will play.

It will be interesting (and, hopefully, not maddening) to see if Coach Bobo puts in some plays that fit Samuel’s strengths. Bobo seems to enjoy sending all 170 pounds of Carlton Thomas up the middle to meet a gruesome, dismembering fate instead of using his quickness to get outside. Would the typical cornerback be very excited to see a 238-lb Samuel, with his speed, receiving a pitch-out and heading his way??! Hopefully, we will find out. The Tennessee game is 50/50.
UGA will beat Ole Miss, Ky, Vandy, Auburn and GT

I don’t see how you came up with those predictions because this team will be better than they were a year ago here’s why.

#1 Ray Drew and Crowell will make a huge difference because of their prowess and Drew’s personality(leader)…..something this team hasn’t had since David Pollack and K.Moreno.

#2 Defense and Offense improved from a year ago and should be even better this season with A. Murray coming back as a better qb and with Ray Drew and Big Jenkins coming to help solidify the rush defense.

2009 Rush Defense Rank 36th
2009 Pass Defense Rank 51st
2009 Total Defense Rank 38th

2010 Rush Defense Rank 56th
2010 Pass Defense Rank 17th
2010 Total Defense Rank 23rd

2009 Total Offense Rank 75th
2010 Total Offense Rank 56th

#3 Too Mr.Richt’s credit, he has an outstanding record against non conference teams. I think he will
handle BS.

#4 Those games against Miss St and SC were close games under a new DC and in my opinion I think Mr.Richt handcuff Murray in those games. I believe the outcome will be different this season.

#5 With or without Meyers I think the dawgs will turn things around against the Gators.

Mr.Richt would of look like a genius had he moved RS to fullback instead of tailback. Same old Mr.Richt!

Then, in typical UGA fashion, Clint Boling becomes the point of emphasis and Richt/Bobo proceed to start messing with Tripp. Richt should at least apologize for misleading the kid. You know what stop giving your $22,000 dollars over the next 10 years. I promise you it will not be missed. Hundreds more will gladly lineup and take your place and still be proud Dawgs.

Also the 10 win seasons you bitch and moan about? How many had we had during that same time frame of 1989-2001? One, 1992! Still didnt win the SEC then….

Just because we are UGA does not mean we are entitled to play in a SEC Title Game or a National Title. If you know anyhting you should know luck is as much involved as any damn thing in terms of those two aspects.

CMR understood how important this off season was and worked his ass off on the recruiting trail to address this. He cannot help the fact that Ealey and King are morons. He was forced to ask RS to move back into the position.

CMR understands just how important this offseason is so why would he wanna trust 100% the backfield to Malcome- cant stay healthy, Thomas- 3rd down back at best, and a True Freshman who knows nothing about pass protection? It was the BEST move for the program. Moving Samuels gives Murray the BEST chance to be successful.

Is this the same Richard Samuel that went down like the Titanic when barely touched? That couldn’t hold onto the ball in critical situations either? If so, I’m not impressed! If we end up having to use him, we’re sunk, IMHO.

He is older, he is stronger and by his own admission, he can just react now instead of having to stop and think (while running up the backside of his blocker). I, for one, think that we need to give the kid a chance. And, while we are at it, consider the fact that the coaches who see him every day may know more that we do.

FL 10 SEC championship appearances
AL 7 SEC championship appearance

5 National titles between them

Since 1990

Now guess what who has put more players in the NFL during this time um oh yea UGA
Who has had more top 10 recruiting classes in this time span, um oh yea UGA

Now what really has Mr. Richt done since Brian Van Gorder left and Donnan’s kids were gone

I think I understand UGA isnt an entitled program but I think a program that sits in the middle of the #4 ranked high school talent state, #2 last year and
2nd in money among all college football programs

Should have a little better results than consistently losing to FL and not going to an SEC championship game or winning the SEC, while beating FL in the same year since 1982

And luck sometimes but you dont say FL and AL appearing in that many title games is luck.

Its called a program that believes in winning, and a fan base that demands more than just 10 win seasons

The reason for our results is we have to many drunk, 10 win loving, beat GT, delusional morons like you and Wally Butt head

You surprise me a bit there old friend. I’ve always took your posts with a bit of carmudgeoned flavor and I have in the past understood your positions and why. This with Samuel though has me a bit perplexed. You do seem to be projecting your distaste for Richt and Bobo on to this one move. Samuel wasn’t a ‘bad’ back before. He wasn’t performing as good as the other two and realized that.

He is now bigger, stronger, faster and much more matured. I think he has the extremely good possibilities to do very well. I do not know for fact but if one measured carries he’s probably the one with the most of all the backs coming in this year. It makes sense to move him. His continuing prospects at LB wasn’t very bright, he would see playing time but not likely that much.

I know how you feel on Richt and Bobo. I don’t blame you. I feel that pain but to poopoo on Samuels is certainly misguided.

1990 Florida? Really that program with Spurrier changed th ewhole landscape of the way football was played in the SEC.

Blame Goff and Donnan

Alabama? Outside of 1992 till Saban arrived the program was mired in turmoil.

Yeah they have the hardware in between but CMR has been really close. I believe in 2007 with the #2 finish it was without VanGorder and without a Donnan player.

I cannot say though I 100% disagree with your comments, but your reasoning behind moving Samuel is the starter to our disagreement. I firmly believe you are wrong on that account.

Yep I am a disgrace for accepting how many Top 10 finishes since 2001? O thats right it was ALL Donnan and VanGorders doing.

I really would like to know if not CMR then who? Dan Mullen? Chris Peterson? Kirby Smart? Hell its the toughest conference in the country. Sorry UGA is not what YOU think it should be.

I’m still thinking Samuel’s move to RB was because he wasn’t panning out as an SEC calibre LB. In my opinion, a better move would have been Justin S-W to tailback…size, lightning speed, and ability to take it to the house every time he touches the ball, like Percy Harvin. But, what do I know. I don’t make $3M a year coaching, nor did I go 14-12 the past two seasons.

The kid should stick around. He could be coaching the team at mid-season. If I was a running back I would sell every shirt I could get my hands on before Coach Richt gets fired. The new coach (Grantham) may decide to clean things up and limit a student athlete’s chances to make some extra cash. I am selling all my game-used bowls and sweaters on e-bay. While we’re being honest, I didn’t want Richt back this year. I never called for his dismissal until last year and to be completely frank, it wouldn’t bother me if they fired him this year. I hope that he turns it around and has an acceptable season and the talk of fire Richt goes away. Although I am not holding my breath. I think he had something once, I’m not sure it’s still there.

There are a lot of Dawg fans in the same place as Flat Tire and rightfully so. It doesn’t matter the move Richt makes, they’ll hate it. This is borne from having your trust as a fan repeatedly shoved up the backside.

And my point for Samuel is this, a 5 star kid wasted just to fill a whole for a few games
Again I have no problem for Samuel being the 3rd guy and still allow him to play linebacker if needed

But its time for Crowell and Malcome to step up and to do that they need to play.

And remember one thing people dont remember 10 win season, Im mean how many top 12 teams finish with 10 wins, usually everyone of them. People remember conference and national titles not 10 win seasons

2007 LOL thats a great example of Richt not getting the team prepared or motivated, losing to S.C and a medicre Tenn team.

Ar,

I think we definetly should expect to win 10 games this year. I think slip ups could come at Miss St and maybe in Knoxville. Richt 100% has to beat Florida this year.

I think anything less than 9 wins and CMR is gone. I thought also he should have been gone, but he is not. So now we gotta support not only him BUT more importantly the young men who where that Red and Black we cheer for. That is why I am left to defend him.

A lot of times people will pull a little dog’s ears when they are trying to make friends with him. At UGA they don’t pull my ears. Our AD has some really big ears and he gets most of the ear pulling on game days. He may do some hair pulling of his own when we line up without any running backs. I know they’re moving some people over from defense but there’s always unexpected injuries and arrests that can rob you of a running back before you can hear your Miranda rights.

Here is something with substance. You seem to think that you small contribution to the UGA football program over the years entitles you to trash everyone in sight and make all of the decisions for the Athletic Department. If that were true, there would be no need for McGarity because you could just run it yourself. Obviously, you are a legend in only your own mind. I think one thing folks simply choose to ignore in the “shoulda fired Willie the summer everyone was voting them #1 in the country” debate is this. CLEARLY Richt didn’t view his defensive staff as the DC ….and everybody else. I would think the fact that he made a move on ALL of them tells you it was way more complicated than just the name of the DC. I gave my opinion on why this Samuel move does no good for us and it absolutely puts Samuel in a bad circumstance by playing a position that he has shown he is not suited for.

I feel sorry for Samuel because he’s being used as a ginny pig to shore up a problem that Richt and Bobo created.

But you being a Richt homer and Kool-aid drinker do not care about the future of Samuel just a coach that when his contract runs out in 2013 will have collected $33 million from UGA. Samuel might not get that opportunity in the NFL since he’s been strung around too much

I think it is a good move. The young man had nothing to lose, since he was buried in the depth chart at LB, barring a lot of injuries. He gets a chance at RB again, and he is now 3 years older and a better athlete. He said he knows the blocking assignments, so that should help the young Crowell as well, provided he doesn’t already feel, he is the annointed one. I don’t mind Samuel being a mentor for Crowell, but I cringed at the thought of King trying to assume that role. A young man like Samuel, with his great attitude may be just what the doctor ordered. Let’s all just wait and see how he does, before passing judgement or whether or not it was a good move. A lot of these folks on this blog, instantly try to find something wrong with everything CMR and the team does. Give the team a chance first. Things might just change for the good.

Thanks Richard. Too bad the OL that left was not a man and unselfish like you.

To AL E. Gator- UGA’s Oline is not a mess, it simply lacks depth but who we have are great.
Also UGA will not lose to SC, UT, UF or Miss St. I really dont give a crap if we lose to Boise but I sure hope so. it will be a tough game that we should win in the 4th qtr if we stay close. UF needed OT to beat us with 4 turnovers by our QB last year and UGA STILL could have won in regulation and you think UF is DEFINATELY going to win this year?! LOL smoke some more. UGA’s toughest opponents are going to be the 1st two games and then Miss St. then UF. We will NOT lose to SC. No way. You say maybe 7-5 or 6-6? You are in a fantasy world. I think you are mistaking UF and AU and UT with UGA for some reason. 8-4 is the WORST case scenario. Undefeated is the best case and if we win the 1st 2 you and your Gators will croak a different tune with your 1st year with a never been a head coach. If not then you will be after UGA romps you come October…..

Win the 1st two and its time to buy SEC championship tickets cuz the rest will be man-handled. We WILL be the STRONGEST team in the SEC this year thanks to the new nutrition program! Look at our schedule…..

Win the 1st two and EVERYONE else is beatable! Go Dawgs. Come out of no where and shock the nation! Shock the nation! Go Dawgs!

UGA’s Defensive coordinator talked to the media yesterday and gave his take on the young mans move. Sounds like he wanted Samuels to play LB but it seems he understands why the switch is good for UGA.

[...] 8. Georgia’s Richard Samuel has gone from tailback to linebacker back to tailback. The junior is not surprised.  Q and A here. [...]

Way to step up, Richard! The Dawg Nation is looking forward to seeing you hit those holes with authority and purpose. It could be an advantage to have worked at linebacker- now you know which running back moves are hardest to handle and how you can minimize the hits the defense will try to deliver. Most of all thanks for applying yourself and working for the good of the team. Sic ‘em

Whatever Coach Rich did to Richard Samuel cannot be worse than what God did to David’s child. In case you do not know god killed david’s child in 2 Samuel out of spite.

Douglas – Amidst your academic credentials I see nothing related to coaching. It also is apparent you paid no attentin to the coaches leaving the decision to the player. I hope you don’t jump to conclusions in your profession as you did in your non-sensical verbiage regarding RS position change. Personally, I believe the decision should be the coaches. We don’t bring recruits to college for NFL purposes. Hopefully, the coaching, and their performance generates that opportunity.

Go Dawgs!
