‘Dawg Night’ nets Georgia 5-star OT John Theus, 4 other commitments

Dawg Night ended up being a big night for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs’ annual elite prospect camp netted five commitments on Friday, including a pledge from five-star-rated offensive tackle John Theus of Jacksonville for the Class of 2012.

Theus (6-6, 292) was a huge pickup for the Bulldogs. He’s rated top among the top three tackles in the nation by both Scout and Rivals. His brother Nathan Theus is a freshman long snapper who will be starting his UGA career this fall. Theus chose the Bulldogs over Florida and Texas. He becomes the 11th committed member of the Class of 2012.

The AJC confirmed three other commitments for Class of 2013 prospects: Quarterback Brice Ramsey of Camden County (6-3, 197); running back Derrick Henry (6-3, 225) of Yulee, Fla.; and athlete Tramel Terry (5-11, 173) of Goose Creek, S.C.

Rusty Mansell, who covers recruiting for 247Sports.com and Dawgs247.com, reported that Stanley Williams, a 2014 running back from Appalachee High in Bethelem, also committed to the Bulldogs.

Ramsey’s commitment is particularly important since Georgia is not going to sign a quarterback in the Class of 2012. Ramsey is generally considered the state’s top signalcaller in his class.

“I certainly felt like Brice was leaning that way for a long time,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron said. “He has been to Georgia camp several times. He really has a lot of respect for Coach Richt and Coach Bobo has a built a great relationship with them. I felt he was leaning toward Georgia, even though he was getting pressed when he went to Florida this summer, along with Florida State and Clemson. I felt like has always talked about Georgia differently.

“He called me tonight and said, ‘Look, Coach, I want to go ahead make it official.’ I said, ‘I certainly don’t have a problem with that Brice. Congratulations.’”

AJC recruiting reporter Michael Carvell will have more later on all these recruiting developments.

UGA recruiting is too narrow

UGA never really seems to get it, concerning great O and D linemen. Maybe I simply do not get it on the HS recruiting front.

Why can we not sign every year …….. 4 or 5 or 6 big boys and yes, two ought to be 4 or 5 star kids. With depth, a team can win in the SEC.

UGA always is a hospital orthopedic ward in August on the O line, with bum shoulders, knees, bad backs and chronic this or that or Johnny simply quit. Why?

Depth solves these problems IF we recruited 5 or 6 quality O linemen ever year. We always have 20-30 flanker/db “athletes” and tight ends but never the hulks.

LSU and Alabama and such always have depth and “big, strong, physically imposing linemen”, so says Kevin Butler and I agree 100% with that. Why does UGA NOT have them?

Go Dogs.

I think the injuries to the big men will be a lot less this year, due to the S and C program now in place. Last year, our big guys seemed to be gassed by the 4th quarter. I think this will not be the case this year. We are thin in backups at Ol this year, but with experience, this should be the last year this is so. We have one 5 star for next years class recruited and I think before 2012 is over with for recruiting we will have 3 or 4 more big men coming in. One thing I feel for sure is that we may lack experience but we will not lack strength and endurance. The whole team is going to benefit from a better S and C program. Let’s not forget that we also have a lot of speed in a lot of positions this year as well.

man i was shocked that 5 committed on friday. uga had a great class in 2011 on the way in 2012, 2013, and possibly 2014 if richt keeps his job he will get uga back to their old winning ways.

“too narrow”, no idea why some of them don’t work out, but the fact that both of the assistants that have a lot to do with the O-line have both been replaced, might be some kind of a sign.

BUT your assertion that UGA doesn’t understand the need for number is not really accurate. UGA has recruited pretty much the same number of Olinemen over the past few years as anyone else does. They signed 6 last year. 2009 was a pretty down year at every positions, but in 2008 they signed 4, 2007 they signed 8. 7 the year before that. Nobody is signing any more numbers and these are all guys that other folks wanted.

Also worth saying that UGA has already signed as much O-linemen as anyone else in the SEC except one I think, at this point of the year.

Now making something with them is another story. Hopefully things will get back to normal, as the O-line has been pretty solid for the most part in the past decade. Looks like we are a year away from having depth again.

Alabama only signed 3 in two of the past three class.

Not sure why everyone is getting so excited. Acting like this is the first time we have picked up a decent recruit or two. Remember the Scout.com report from a couple of weeks ago. Number 2 in recruiting over the last 10 years.

McGarity knows how disruptive changing a head coach is to the team. Because of this, something will happen no later than the 3rd to 5th game. Either CMR will get a 3 year extension or he will be replaced , but there is no way this happens at the end of the year .

Bryant-3 10 win seasons in his first 20 years. 6 more of those same 20 years he won 6 or less games…..

Dooley-3 10 win seasons in his first 16 years, then Herschel arrived

Paterno-6 10 win seasons in first 10 years!

Bowden-2 10 win seasons in first 10 years (not counting at Howard where they played 9 game seasons)

Mark Richt-6 10 WIN SEASONS in 1st 10 YEARS as a head coach!

ONLY Mark Richt and Paterno! The others did HALF as well. Does this show you haters how silly and ignorant and DUMB you are and that you need to keep yor mouth shut and maybe, just maybe do an ABOUT face and SUPPPORT Richt with EVERYTHING you got before you run one of the BEST coaches in NCAA HISTORY out of ATHENS!

Everybody EXPECTED the last 2 years to be down years with Cox at QB and Moreno gone. Then a new freshman QB and New defense and coaches last year plus a weak OL. Last year was a FLUKE and UGA EASILY could have lost only 2 games STILL last year without bad breaks and suspensions. so 6 and 6 was not expected but understandable. The bowl game was TOTALLY Bobo’s fault. All games UGA could have won or were in position to win except the Auburn game but bad breaks, untimely turnovers and penalties and terrible calls by the refs at the WORST time and UGA could have went 9-3, 10-2 or 11-1. Last year was a fluke. Every team goes through a tough spell. UGA is now BACK so PLEASE DO NOT jump back on the UGA or Mark RIcht bandwagon these next 5 YEARS while we are back to winning 10 plus games a year and SEC championships. OK?

Bobo may need to go but Richt? NEVER!

I disagree because I think McGarity wants to be proactive and show that he is in charge and knows what it take to have a top ten team , every year. One of CMR problems has been he is years too slow in making changes if it is needed. McGarity has seen the benefit that a mid year change will have on the team and on recruiting when he was at Florida. I hope CMR will do enough to get the extension but if he doesn’t the only way CMR isn’t replaced early is if Adams steps in and want let it happen.I think McGarity will be a great AD if allowed to handle things his way. Remember , McGarity is a Georgia graduate and will only have what best for Georgia in mind. I will support him in his decision 100% . He just doesn’t seem the type to second guess himself and be one of these that wait too long before taking action.

Columbus,
I agree but I think CMR has made it very clear that Bobo is there to stay as long as he is head coach. Bobo’s wife is related to the Dooley’s and with 5 kids just puts too much pressure on Richt to ever think about replacing him. My thing about Bobo is if he had any respect from other teams he would have been interviewed last year for one of the many head coaching jobs that came open or one of the coordinator jobs or coaching job that came open in Pro ball. Bobo should be making a lot more than he is at Georgia but even though he is a very good quarterback coach and recruiter seems to not be able to handle the many responsibilities of a coordinator . One big example of that is the problem we had with our offensive line last year, which is his responsibility.

7576, McGarity is going to give Richt every opportunity to succeed, even if (and I don’t think it will happen) Dawgs start 0-2 there’s still a chance with this schedule to have a 9-11 win season. No way Adams backs anything other than giving Richt every chance there is including another disappointing season if he replaces another coordinator.

Waiting to replace Martinez has cost Georgia a lot and waiting to hire Grantham cost them a lot last year with recruits of the 2010 class that doesn’t fit Granthams 3-4 scheme or took awhile to learn everything. The defense will be greatly improved this year and possibly could carry Georgia to 10 or 11 wins but if Bobo doesn’t improved a lot from last year I’m afraid his weakness as a coordinator will be a lot more obvious in 2012 and especially in 2013 when the schedule is a lot harder and the defense can’t mask the problems with the offense.

7576………McGarity is not in charge. I have known him about 20 years. Right now he is a “brown nose”, following Adams orders. Whatever happens, it will come from Adams.

I am not sure how much game preparation was our “running game” coordianators Searles responsibility. Perhaps retaining him was the mistake we made on the offensive side. Richt didn’t seem to put too much effort into keeping him . One thing is certain we will have a good idea in about 5 or 6 weeks.

So you are saying that the AD in a “show of being in charge” would fire the HC in mid season and replace him with whom? Rodney Garner? Mike Bobo? Joe T?

Who would he proving he is in chare to? Nobody questions that he is in charge. In fact, that would look like he was LESS in charge and just reacting.

There could not be a worse move if recruiting was the concern. That would absolutely make no sense. What recruit would commit in a situation like that before a new coach is named? And thats not going to happen till December. Obviously the thing to do is let the current staff do the best they can recruting till the end of the season.

McGarity isn’t going to be playing silly chess games like that over something as serious as the HC because he is worried about a couple of recruits.

I’d bet the farm that IF Richt gets to the point that he believes replacing Bobo is in the best interest of the program, he will do exactly that. But up to this point there has not even been an opportunity to seriously consider doing that. When the hell was he going to flip his offensive staff? after 2009 on top of the defense?? This past offseason? Get real.

OK Bob, that’s certainly a fair personal opinion to have. So say that 2008 was such a poor job worth firing..that would make him waiting only ONE year longer than some folks would have liked. In light of the fact that the defensive staff held together a squad that couldn’t even practise after the 5th game of the year, had no healthy DE, which is the main cog of the style they played, barely enough LBs to play the whole game, had to compensate for an offence and special teams turning the ball over repeatedly, and still managed to win 10 games, he felt like giving them ONE year was the right thing to do. As soon as he was convinced, he made a move.
