‘Dawg Night’ nets Georgia 5-star OT John Theus, 4 other commitments

Dawg Night ended up being a big night for the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs’ annual elite prospect camp netted five commitments on Friday, including a pledge from five-star-rated offensive tackle John Theus of Jacksonville for the Class of 2012.

Theus (6-6, 292) was a huge pickup for the Bulldogs. He’s rated top among the top three tackles in the nation by both Scout and Rivals. His brother Nathan Theus is a freshman long snapper who will be starting his UGA career this fall. Theus chose the Bulldogs over Florida and Texas. He becomes the 11th committed member of the Class of 2012.

The AJC confirmed three other commitments for Class of 2013 prospects: Quarterback Brice Ramsey of Camden County (6-3, 197); running back Derrick Henry (6-3, 225) of Yulee, Fla.; and athlete Tramel Terry (5-11, 173) of Goose Creek, S.C.

Rusty Mansell, who covers recruiting for 247Sports.com and Dawgs247.com, reported that Stanley Williams, a 2014 running back from Appalachee High in Bethelem, also committed to the Bulldogs.

Ramsey’s commitment is particularly important since Georgia is not going to sign a quarterback in the Class of 2012. Ramsey is generally considered the state’s top signalcaller in his class.

“I certainly felt like Brice was leaning that way for a long time,” Camden County coach Jeff Herron said. “He has been to Georgia camp several times. He really has a lot of respect for Coach Richt and Coach Bobo has a built a great relationship with them. I felt he was leaning toward Georgia, even though he was getting pressed when he went to Florida this summer, along with Florida State and Clemson. I felt like has always talked about Georgia differently.

“He called me tonight and said, ‘Look, Coach, I want to go ahead make it official.’ I said, ‘I certainly don’t have a problem with that Brice. Congratulations.’”

AJC recruiting reporter Michael Carvell will have more later on all these recruiting developments.

@savannah: theus actually tweeted at Marshall to get to dawg nite, and he responded “tell coach McClendon and Richt I say whassup.” Marshall is on record as saying he would like to run behind theus. I think we’re in good shape.

Nash…I covered 5 of Stanley Williams (2014 RB commit from Apalachee) last year as part of my free-lance gig, and he is electrifying. He’s a smaller back (but in his defense he was a freshman) but he has breakaway speed (a la Tron Jackson) and moves reminiscent of (and pardon the hyperbole) Barry Sanders. That said I’m surprised at such an early commitment, but based on what I saw last year, I’m glad we got him.

Congrats UGA fans those are some nice verbal commits. Hopefully the staff at GT has not completely screwed the program and we can land one or two with this camp.

Take that UF. Lost on Brice and Theus and Henry because we are UGA and you are not! EVERYBODY wanted all 3 of them, especially Henry. Terry can play WR or CB. Sorry SC you were his leader, sorry Clemson and Bama. Brice’s coach says it is like God gave him all the tools to be a QB. ALL the tools…Another 1st pick in the draft and a national championship caliber QB to make that run like we did with Stafford but the BCS picked LSU over us so we just had to go thrash Hawaii….

Stanley Williams 2nd game in High school as a FRESHMAN on the varsity team last year…..

Williams rushed for 262 yards on 15 carries (17.5 yards per carry) and two touchdowns. He also had 73 yards on kickoff returns. Against a defense that had not given up a point all year….he can score from ANYWHERE….

One of the greatest days ever in UGA recruiting. All these guys are here for one thing…to play together and win SEC championships. These guys are ALL STUDS! And they are DAWGS!

Good article on dawgpost too.

Nice commits? The QB is DEFINATELY the top QB coming out no matter the class he would be in. The RB’s are AWESOME! The OL is top 3 at his position in the nation! Everybody wanted all of them including Terry who can play both sides. People there may have NEVER in UGA history been a better day of recruting. EVERYBODY wanted these guys and they are elite at their positions.

Brice may make Stafford look like a division 2 QB when he gets here. I told all of you in January, The DAWG has turned.
I have been watching too long and have gained some wisdom over the years OK.

UGA just needed a down year to regroup and refocus and make some changes like the new DC. We had the RIGHT and BEST man to get us through this and he HAS someone on his side when he needs him most….God Almighty. You reap what you sow and Richt has sown well and when the times are tough, he will, like Moses, get us to the promise land!

Dont be like the Israelites and forget what we have been through, the victories, the championships. Stop whining Israelites, have faith.. It will all be OK. See tonight as an example. We just picked up 5 4 and 5 star players who everyone wanted but they came to where? UGA. It is going to be OK.

They are all AWESOME players the type that win Championships to go along with the players we already have! Thank GOD Richt was not fired in a panic of whining so-called Dawgs. The Dawg has turned.

You bunch of Israelites stop whining and get with the program. Have faith baby! See the big picture. Not the trees of last year but the forest that is beyond.

We knew the year before last was going to suck without Stafford and Moreno and then last year a new DC and QB and not stud at running back. There will be Valleys but we have a coach that will get us through and we will be stronger for it men.

It is a GREAT time to be A DAWG. Richt will retire as the Dog’s coach in another 20 years if he chooses to coach that long but in the meantime, keep the faith and do not panic because there will be good years but also a bad year here and there but overall it will be good years and several SPECIAL years in the next 10!

We are about to start dominating the SEC. We will improve the next 2 years significantly in 2012 and then after that we will be like UF in the 90’s and before Tebow left but maybe even stronger EVERY year. Seriously. I have watched all this for 30 years and UGA is in a better place for the next 6 years and beyond then ANY team I have ever seen after these recruits tonight and the best thing is, they are MORE to come.

And I have ALL the faith in the world that Coach Richt will get the players at the postions we need. He has friends in high places…..the BEST places and the special players respect him and we get so many we NEVER would have gotten if not because of him. Appreciate your coach. You have NEVER had a better one at UGA. NEVER…..

Columbus……Take what?????????

Yes, Florida made a push for Theus….but he was always a Dawg. Everyone knew that. He is going to be a really good player for you guys.

But Florida isn’t running scared, dude. They have a commitment already from OT, Jassamen Dunker…and he is just as good as Theus. Humphries may commit at Friday Night for the Gators, and he may be better. And it is between Florida, Auburn, and Bama for Young….who may be the better of all of them. Plus, Florida also has a commitment from Omari Phillips, who will probably be a stand out on the OL or DL….he is that athletic….and is in the runnning for several other outstanding lineman. Florida now has a great OL coach (Verducci) that is having a big impact on the recruiting trail. Theus was not a spread OL…not an overly athletic lineman. So Florida got in too late for him, especially with his brother already in Athens (and who gives schollys to long snappers, anyway?).

So, congrats on getting Thues. Very good get….and the commits for your class. But Muschamp and his staff are great recruiters….and very good coaches……so….get excited about your team….but don’t over due it with comments like…..”Take that, Florida.” Take what? 18 out of 21….and still counting!

And…..if you didn’t notice….the best RB in Georgia this year…..Mr Mike Davis….is going to be a Gator….along with the best RB in FLorida….Mr. Matt Jones. To go along with another really good former Georgia RB….Mack Brown. I would say Florida is set for years to come at RB.

After reading a few comments on this blog it’s nice to dream isn’t it.

I’m glad we got some recruits, but let’s not parade around here like Mark Richt saved his job here we still got a Season to get into coming up next month, and honestly Richt’s Season begins and ends with Boise St. and South Carolina.

If he can’t get it done against the smurfs who we pounded into the ground over 5 years ago then he just might not be the coach to get it done at all.

Oh yeah and before we even talk about BCS NCG’s got to take down the weakest of opponents that shouldn’t be no match for us talking about the UCF’s and such. Plus on top of that we must actually either win our divison or come close in 2010-11 season we weren’t even close.

To tell ya the truth looking at our upcoming schedule Richt only has room to breath on 4 games this season the 2 east OOC games being New Mexico St. and Coastal Carolina the Vanderbilt, and maybe Kentucky.

I’m just hoping Richt can get 9 wins in this season 10 will at least save his job for maybe another season with a SEC title saving it for at least 3. Any BCS bowl berth would just add on, and I already know what will happen when a title arrives.

Where’s the outrage? UGA just offered a scholarship to a player from out of state. Some Georgia player whose parents pay taxes in Georgia would have loved to play for his home school, but his scholly was given to a guy from Florida!

Hint: If you are going to give scholarships to out of state players, you never have any right to criticize a Georgia player that chooses to leave the state to play football. That’s a two way street.

Now Tide Roll, is speaking for Florida. I think you have enough keeping your spokeman job for all things tide. Not UGA, Florida, Auburn, SC or any other team want or needs you to be their spokeman. What qualifies you to make you think you know more than the coaches of other teams do anyway?

Why in the world does the Richt/Bobo braintrust go to Fla. when Bama comes here and lands Under Armour All American Brandon Greene. He, like NFL 1st rounder James Carpenter and Chance Warmack is sitting right under your nose. Unbelievable. Kid’s from Cedar Grove High right here in Atlanta, 6′6″ 320 and much more athletic than Theus. Typical UGA. But I guess it works. CMR is great for UGA. Anyone who has coached understands that you may not know everything about a player when you recruit them and many times, their personalities will change as they move away from home. Athletic dorms are gone and athletes have to make better decisions because they have less supervision than in the past. Many indiscretions from the past are not accepted in today’s world. We live in a world of hypersensitive and hypercritical observers. CMR and his staff represent the University with integrity. Players know this and recruit’s parents know this. Leave the coaches alone. They may have a few down years on the field. As a grad school alumni, I support the team and coaches in good times and during the down times. GO Dawgs.
