Junior Richard Samuel (22), here in Georgia's G-Day Game, was actually looking pretty good as a linebacker. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
In the wake of attrition at the running back position, Georgia announced Thursday that junior Richard Samuel will move back to tailback from linebacker.
Samuel, a former five-star prospect from Cartersville who was recruited at both positions, played tailback his first two seasons with the Bulldogs. He agreed to a move to linebacker last year, then redshirted. The 6-foot-2 athlete is now up to 243 pounds. He played tailback in the 225 to 230 range.
Georgia lost its top two tailbacks of the two last seasons — Caleb King and Washaun Ealey – to academic ineligibility and transfer, respectively, since the end of spring practice. True freshman Isaiah Crowell, junior Carlton Thomas and redshirt freshman Ken “Boo” Malcome were the only remaining tailbacks on scholarship.
Following is UGA’s release:
Georgia junior linebacker Richard Samuel of Cartersville will return to the tailback position, according to an announcement Thursday by UGA head coach Mark Richt. Samuel, who played tailback as a freshman and sophomore, had been moved to linebacker a year ago but injuries led to a redshirt season in 2010.
“After discussions with Richard, his family, and our coaches I’m excited that Richard wants to make the move,” Richt said. “He’s one of our fastest and most powerful players, is very mature, has a strong character and is a man we can count on. I’m proud of him for always putting the team first and I look forward to seeing what he can do.”
Said Samuel: “I’m excited about the opportunity at tailback. I’m ready to do anything that will help the team win.”
In his two seasons at tailback (2008-09), Samuel played in 22 games including six starts (all in 2009). He carried 114 times for 528 yards and three touchdowns.

Oh Hell yeah. Now play him. A lot. Along with Christian LeMay. This is a different OL and fullback he’ll be running behind now. 6′2″ 230lb. and explosive. Great move by the Dawgs. Now go get Joe Harris, turn Brandon Greene, and sign Vadal Alexander, and you’re going places. And the thing is, they’re in state kids. Ripe for the taking. If you think Muschamp really wants theus, you’re crazy. He wants Jessaman Dunker, D. J. Humphries, and Avery Young, and he’s going to get them. Richt/Bobo can’t continue to stand by and sign the caliber of offensive lineman that can’t play at this level. They simply can’t. It’s a new day. Muschamp gets it. Why do Richt and Bobo refuse to?

Or, even worse, will we use him for 4-5 offensive plays per game, when he could be contributing at LB? ………….Remember, Coach Bobo is the one making these playcalling decisions!! Good luck to Samuel!! Great move my ass. UGA now has a starting running back that was 3rd string 2 years ago. That had proven to everyone that he had no vision or balance, and that he was not and i REPEAT not an SEC calibre running back. This move now weakens 2 positions, L.B, and running back. Got to hand it to Richt and his wonderful running back coach for recruiting top talent at running back the past 2 or 3 seasons. This staff once again shows that it has no clue when it comes to recruiting and making good evaluations of prospects. Richt has let this program sink into the bottom of the SEC in talent and coaching, and McGarity needs to stop the bleeding now, but unfortunately for UGA fans the NIGHTMARE in Athens will continue. How in God’s name could this clown Richt allow this program to sink to the level it has become? There is absolutely no depth at R.B, O.L, W.R, D.L, L.B, C.B, and especially safety. And all of this has happened under the wonderful Richt’s watch. UGA fans are getting what they deserve. a mediocre coach, and a mediocre program. Richt is the 7th best coach in the SEC now, and his program is the 7th best team in the SEC now, if they finish that high.

Good to see after that weak lineman just SELFISHLY left school.
If Crowell is something really special he will get 20 or more carries and hopefully after Bozo learned the RUN the ball lesson….they will run it and keep it out of Boise’s and USC’s hands since Crowell will need time to learn pass protection….This will keep the other teams defenses ON the field and wear them down, REST our defense and keep the opponent’s offenses off the field and maybe over-anxious and create mistakes. So I hope we run MORE especially with Green gone. It makes GREAT sense. Let’s see if Bozo has gotten any since the bowl game. I doubt it. He is the problem since he took over as OC and play calling and game preparation. Not Richt.

@1953Dawg,
“Richt has let this program sink into the bottom of the SEC in talent and coaching,”
As much as I hate to ask this: How are they at the bottom in both talent and coaching? How do you quantify that statement when all the major recruiting services say otherwise about the talent pool that UGA have recruited over the last 5-10 years? Why does Richt have a winning record over every other SEC school with the exception of UF since Richt has been there if they are at the bottom of the SEC? One losing season does not sink you to the bottom of the SEC. Why don’t we see what happens with all the changes and a new AD that will make the decision to fire him if there’s no improvement. My question to you is, will you give the coaching staff credit if they have a 10 win season this year? I do understand that you do not like Richt for some reason or another, but your “bottom” dwelling claim is simply not true. The numbers says otherwise. I want argue against your other points because they are simply an opinion.

We should change our fight song to “Desperado.” He was absolutely terrible at RB. So after preparing to be a linebacker for the last year or so he is going to suddenly morph into a good running back? He has allowed this program to get passed by Auburn, S.C., Miss.St, Arkansas, LSU, Bama, and Fl. Yet you get on these blogs and brag about his first 3 or 4 years. My GOD, wake up, and for once look at where this program is now. Richt has destroyed this program, and he will never get it back. We have no depth at any position, no playmakers on offense, Murray is not a playmaker when the games count, no playmakers on defense, and the only thing this team has is a good place kicker, punter, and kick return guy. If you are so delusional that you think UGA will win with a good punter, kicker, and return man, then i feel sorry for you. Bottomline, this program is irrelevant now because of your wonderful Richt, and that’s not going to change.

Marinedawg, this is not based on last year. It is based on the past 3 years, and unfortunately the program has been in decline for the past 3 years. UGA has underachieved the past 4 years actually, while other programs in the SEC have been on the upswing. For programs like Auburn, Miss.St, S.C,and Arkansas to pass UGA is a disgrace, and Richt is the man responsible for this. He is getting paid $3 million to make sure this doesn’t happen. Defend him all you want, but the bottomline is he isn’t getting paid $3 million per year to finish behind Auburn, Miss.St,S.C,Arkansas, and especially Bama, LSU, and Fl. How can any UGA fan defend this clown when he has a 2and8 record against Florida for GOD’S sake, wakeup, did Dooley lose 8 out of 10 to Fl., answer is never. So keep drinking the kool-aid, because this guy is not a good coach, because a good coach would not allow this to happen to his program. As for your question about talent, it is obvious, recruiting services don’t mean anything, and if you don’t have the coaches to coach up talent, and to evaluate talent, these numbers mean nothing. Prime example is Richard Samuel. How has UGA and Richt done with this 5 star talent. Give me a fu..ing break!!

nasty dawg, you are a total idiot. 3 of the players we placed on the sec team are special teams players. One player on defense, which was second team in Tyson. That really adds up to alot of depth doesn’t it. Please, show your ignorance somewhere else, but once again shows what typical UGA fans know about the depth chart and it shows how kool-aid drinkers think. If you don’t know that UGA has no depth at R.B(Why was Samuel moved again) O.L, 6 lineman that are healty, D.L, L.B, 4 starters are playing that didn’t start last year(Ogletree, Washington,Jones, and Robinson), C.B, and Safety, where hamilton might start and he admitted to not knowing what he was doing on the field last year. Yet you talk about depth, my God, please stop listening to Richt and look at the facts. Placing 3 players on special teams does not mean there is any depth.

Terrell Davis was a 6th-round draft pick by the Broncos. He was 6th-string during their training camp. Alex Gibbs and his blocking scheme for the Broncos OL let that young man develop into a 2-time Super Bowl winner and 2000+ yards NFL MVP.

Move the change gang and keeps Crowell fresh. However, I do question the decision making of this coaching staff. I just hope it doesn’t back fire.

Just run the Stud behind Kenarious Gates, Bean Anderson, Artie Lynch, and Bruce Figgins. All day long. This is the year to wear down Florida and Auburn’s defenses. Both are extremely thin. Just wish Richt/Bobo had anticipated this, and recruited more depth in your offensive line. Samuel presents a great opportunity to control the ball and keep your defense off the field. This again raises the question as to whether or not you’re patient enough to do it. That’s the problem when you have former QB(s) as both head coach and offensive coordinator. They don’t challenge one another. Just support each other’s desire to throw it all over the place. The only two times you’ve beaten Florida is when you scored 4 Touchdowns ON THE GROUND.

1953Dawg,
Why don’t you remove your personal agenda from the equation and have a discusiion that doesn’r involve getting rid of the coaching staff. You constantly belittle everything that happens there and if someone questions the statements you make that are inaccurate, they are deemed to be drinking kool-aid. Didn’t they have a 10 win season during that 3 year period you speak of. Didn’t they finish in the top 3 after the 2007 season.
You mentioned that Arkansas, Auburn and MissST have passed them up in the last few years. Do you think that these things goes in cycles.
For a guy with name of “1953″, you have a hard time articulating an intelligent debate without name-calling or fill in the blank foul language. How do you expect someone to even consider what you’re saying. I’m not going to get into an argument with you over your emotional temper tantrums. You have your opinion and I have mine. You’re not going to change mine and I’m sure that I’m not going to change yours. I’m just glad that you’re not the one that make the decisions about UGA football.

A few thoughts on the move: Positive–you have to love Samuel’s attitude! Great athlete, great speed, and most important–he just turned 20. He early enrolled 3.5 years ago when he was only 16, so that probably means he is smart, too! So he was a 17 year old running against a bunch of men who were probably 3-5 years older than him. Being an LB and really toughens you up as an RB–speaking from some experience on that one. We’ll see what he can do! On the negative side (possibly)- we have Malcome, Crowell, Thomas and Harton. They have gotten a good look at all of them in workouts, playbook studies, and discipline/demeanor. They have gotten good looks at all but Crowell on the field. They obviously don’t feel overwhelmed with any of them, including Crowell, because why else would they risk wasting a talented LB like Samuel? May be the first sign they don’t think Crowell will be another Lattimore type impact player. On the other hand, they could be impressed with some of the new LBs, or some of the older ones. But, this is where the coaches get paid to make the decisions, and we get to see how effective they are. Go Dawgs, and Go R. Samuel!

You got to be kidding me, he would of been an amazing linebacker for UGA probably one of the best in years if they kept him at the position…Thats one reason CMR isn’t a great coach moving players around and don’t know how o utilize them from the get go!

I am nearly your age I guess and have been a dawg fan from Butts to Richt. Suffered ups and downs along the way. 3 off seasons and you call it sinking to the depths of the SEC? Maybe you have not watched and or cheered the same bulldogs as I have over the years. It seems you have a personal vendetta on Richt and that is none of my business. Maybe the fact he makes 2.5 million more than you may have something do with it, or maybe your wife has the hots for him and that irks you, i don’t know nor do I care. But you are either a fan and support or be a non-fan and berate but for goodness sake don’t be a fan and constantly bash the team or coaches. Being we are both somewhat older “mature” gentlemen, I feel i have a right to drink of the succulent “kool-aid” if I so desire as well as you do not if you wish. What ever happened to Richt raving about how good Malcomb looked in practice last year. If Malcomb isn’t progressing as CMR hoped then this move is a lot better than ever letting Thomas take another snap at Tailback. Everybody in the stadium knew Thomas was going to run the ball when he was put in as Tailback because he can’t do anything else. He is too small to block anybody so you were just wasting a play with him in the game.
Maybe this will work out . Maybe we expected too much from Sameuls when he was a freshman. But, if he starts fumbling once every fourth carry, just threw a number out there because it happened so frequently, again or their weakest defensive back can still tackle him , meaning he still can’t break tackles, then I hope this experiment want last more than a game or two.

Also, Samuel’s stint at Linebacker can only help him. He undertands the reads and schemes.. He’s now better able to antcipate, which, at his speed, will be all he needs to bust one. In fact, it should be a requirement that all running backs play defense first to learn the same thing. Combine that with the benefits gained from his earlier learning experience as a 17 year old true frosh running back in the SEC, ( today he’s 230lb. grown man) and you’ve got something.

What a stupid decision. I agree with you 1953Dawg — he is not a great running back. He was a great LB in high school — he loved to hit people and make them pay. Just go back and look at his highlight tape. This is just stupid coaching. I am so tired of incompetent coaches. And you MarineDawg: I’m tired of look at what Richt has done over the time he has been here. How can you even say that? He is no longer the offensive playcalling coach and Bobo is not as good as Richt in playcalling. Other coaches hired in the SEC have surpassed Richt as a coach. Yeah, he can recruit pretty well but so can all the other SEC coaches. And players do not improve once they get to UGA.

I like Mark Richt a lot and want him to stay at Georgia but I do agree with you that I wish we would get another offensive coordinator that could challenge Mark Richt than just complement every decision he makes because the coordinator thinks just like him. Two former Quarterback is not very good.
To be honest with you I would rather have a Head Coach that was a great Defensive Coordinator that’s why I am so encouraged that we brought Grantham in and was willing to pay a lot to for him. If CMR will not intervene and will let Grantham run the defense exactly the way he wants , cursing and all except when he is on TV, then I think Bulldawg nation will be very happy with our defense results this year.

I don’t really like the move. He could not hold on to the football which was Ealey’s problem as well. He also does not have any type of cut. He is fast and powerful and would be a very good fullback but I don’t know about him switching back to running back. They should at least play him both ways like that guy at Stanford (Owen Marecik? sorry for the spelling). This tells me that Crowell is not leading the way and stepping up like he should be. I would like to see Ken Malcome more because he looks strong and ready to play as long as he is healthy. I just see Samuel playing in the first two games before giving way to Crowell. Then seeing Samuel sit the bench and move back to linebacker for his Senior year. I hope I am wrong but it seems they are only moving him back to RB for insurance. I just think thats a bad move.

And to the guy who comment about Samuel’s gaining those yard on a weak Arkansas Defense, Samuel also averaged 4.3 yards per carry, and 7.7 yards receiving against SC, and 6.7 yards per carry against FL, and now he’s bigger and stronger, so I guess we will see what will happen come Fall.

Desperation runs amok
July 14th, 2011
8:44 pm
It’s desperation run amok with this team. CMR is trying to coach while looking over his shoulder at the next thing coming. CMR created this mess when he publicly embarrassed Ealey with that lame display letting the RB position empty on Crowell’s visit. There was no need for that dog and pony show. Richt should have let Crowell and Ealey settle it on the practice field.
Now they move back a guy that they banished to the bench, so I have to ask, is this the best use of his abilities. From what has been stated here in the past, Samuel was a better LB than he was a RB, and a lot on here were soooooooooooooooo happy that he was moved.
I hope that CMR realizes that CMB can not coach the offense like he has in the past. The depth of talent is not there; not at receiver, not at RB, not the OL. Keep in mind that they only have something like 28/29 practices to get everything ready by the first game.
So who will be ready first, the RB’s or the WR’s? Hopefully, CMB will realize that a balanced attack may not be an option, and he may have to rely on the passing game, or maybe it’ll be the running game, either way CMR can not just stand around playing the CEO roll and not give big time guidance to Bobo.
You got Murray, Charles, a couple of linemen, and I’ll even throw in King, but that’s it really. The defense has also got new unknowns/players. Sit back and quit being a fan, and this is a scary team. Here’s hoping that they can put it all together.

Samuel couldn’t hold onto the ball 2 years ago, and won’t be able to this year either. It’s a shame that they’re jerking this kid around. Yes, I know the answer. In 09 Samuel had the job, it was his to lose and he did. He was a 17 year old freshman and didn’t respond well to the pressure as evidenced by his penchant for fumbling. He was a bit impatient and lacked vision. That doesn’t mean he can’t or won’t be a very good TB now. He is very fast and very strong. His short comings his freshman year are very coachable.

A good kid. You know he was 16 years old when he enrolled in his first spring semester? In the first go-round, he kept his head down, often running into the backs of his OLs and getting tripped up by defensive players on the ground, who had been knocked down by his OL.
He should watch film of Knowshon’s ‘07 season, when he, more times than not, made his yards by cutting back when there was no hole where the play was called.
There’s no doubt Samuel has the raw speed, he just needs better vision of the play developing in front of him.

I have absolutely no confidence in our coaching staff.
Either RS was or wasn’t a top 3 RB for this team 2 years ago. It was determined he wasn’t. We changed his entire college career and move him to LB. Now, in part thanks to the failure to recruit and largely due to the failure to retain a troubled and disgruntled but still capable RB in Ealey, when it had to already be known that King wasn’t going to cut it academically, the coaching staff moves him back to RB?
This is junior high coaching at its best. I like Richt personally but I’ve watched enough of the “D” the 5 years before Grantham, Bobo, off-season nightmares, Richt-admitted recruiting craziness such as the recruiting of Cam as a TE, and positional whack-a-mole like this to simply think Richt is just about as lost as they come.
Samuel is a team player that shouldn’t be asked to potentially sacrifice his professional career TWICE because our coaching staff doesn’t have their recruiting and developing ass together.

CMR should think about that kid’s future and play him at LB. If they thought he was the best RB out there, they wouldn’t have switched him. Why is every one saying that Samuel coming to offense means Crowell isn’t ready? How does it mean that? It simply means the SEC is a 2 back team. What was the last SEC team to win the title without 2 backs? And on top of it, until Crowell has played a couple of games, you can’t tell how his body will hold up. The hardest thing about playing RB in the SEC isn’t getting tackled, its blocking in pass protection (especially for Bobo). Do you guys remember how good Moreno was? Yet Brown still got a lot of playing time and carries.
Also Samuel didn’t have the high profile that King and Ealey had, that is one of the reasons he was moved to LB. But I feel confident he can do better than what Ealey was doing last season.

What should be concerning is why we felt the need to move him. We have Crowell who they say is the man. When does samuel play if these kids perform like they expect?

I’ve been a season ticket holder for over 25 years and about this time of year UGA rewards its contributors with a small gift. In some years, it has been a cool license plate or license frame or other reasonable offerings. This year we get a crummy lapel pin that looks like something you would pick up as a free give-away at a convention. This, a small schedule and a couple of small window stickers (I mean REALLY small). This for all the thousands of dollars donated over the years. Thanks a bunch. Go Dawgs …

Disagree with the decision. Like the kid and his attitude, but he should have been on the defensive side from day one. He should have been redshirted the first year when he was 17 years old. They finally saw the light and moved him to his best position…now all the weight gain and practice on defense is for nought.
Hope he runs for 2000 yards and proves me wrong, but I doubt it. Been there, done that, and not too well. Fumbles, missed blocks, runs straight into the ground. How quickly we all forget.

@1953Dawg: This move shows exactly that CMR is no longer fit to head a major D-1 program. Samuel was a decent running back when he started out and his performance began to somewhat decline with the emergence of CK and WE3. Because of CMR’s lack of emphasis in running the ball he gave RS to the defense and RS being the team player agreed to move to reserve LB. He was never going to be heard from again at that position and was just going to provide depth at LB. The only action at LB for RS would be on kickoff and punt coverage. Nobody and I mean nobody wastes more talent in the SEC than CMR. This move really makes him look dumb because RS should have been left at RB in the first place if only to provide depth to that position. Everybody in the SEC knows the expectations placed on a very green and immature Crowell were laughable and may cause him to washout and leave due to his immaturity and the fact that CMR set him up to fail as a true freshman. As long as CMR remains at UGA only a FOOL and a fool’s parents would allow their 4 or 5 star son to sign with Georgia. Samuel is a DGD for not leaving when CMR gave up on him at RB. But he’s been screwed over by CMR and may not be as effective at RB now. How can he be motivated to succeed with no coaching at his RB position and and an offensive line that’s low on depth and very, very poorly coached to run block. I agree with 1953Dawg 100%, the next screwup by CMR in personnel matters should land him out of coaching in the SEC and into a full time position in the ministry where he rightfully belongs. CMR must accept his role in the sabotage in the careers of at least three going on four of the last highly recruited backs that have recently signed with UGA. Moreno was very fortunate to get out and leave early for the pros. There you have it Dawgfans, this is how you bring in RB talent to a traditional running program, under and non coach it, then toss it and pull it from under the bus to justify an outmoded and washed up pass to set the run mindset. For Georgia to regain it’s former respect as Georgia, this coaching regime has got to go. Ten years of this evolution to mediocrity got to go. WOOF !!!

The players play for “free” ….almost…..
While the colleges….Tech and Ga included….make big bucks on the kids…
So when these kids, some of whom will never play pro and capitalize on their talents, are guilty of taking some form of assistance that is deemed illegal by the BIG ALL SEEING ALL KNOWING NCAA…..
….the hammer falls and the “violator” is spanked….
I know…the schools and everyone should play by the rules….but some of the kids have “ZERO” resources above what the schools can give them….so everyone knows the game….
Fix it Adults….fix it…..
Time for ALL the FANS to DEMAND that the “big players” in this deal… (Colleges and NCAA) FIX this and pay the players to play….
The colleges are the minor leagures for the NFL and the NBA….pay those players as such…period…

If anything, Samuel is going to give Crowell competition to make Crowell better as a player. If you give a player entitlement, they start to feel like they don’t have to work for playing time and they don’t work at all and that’s when they don’t perform on the field. If Crowell isn’t on his toes and ready to go from day one, then Samuel WILL BE the starter against Boise. I actually rather see Samuel start vs. Boise just to see how Boise is going to react. Here they are trying to tackle a guy that’s bigger than their linebackers. Crowell will be the man in time, but I just don’t think he’ll be ready vs. Boise. Maybe I’m wrong?

If CMR had his druthers this move never gets made. Thomas is not a #2 back. Malcombe has yet to stay healthy so putting the burden of him being a Co-#1 with Crowell is insane. Expecting Crowell to walkin and be the next Lattimore or Dyer is fools Gold. CMR had no choice but to humbly ask Samuels to make the move. Make no mistake Samuels will carry the rock this fall. He will be the starter against Boise St. The move comes with some expectations to take care of Samuels I am sure. I applaud the young man for being open to it. It is a character move on his part. -Caleb King

-A.J. Harmon
-Marcus Dowtin
-Brent Benedict
That’s it right? But the thing is; NONE of those were because of arrests which excites me. I’m so glad we’ve stayed out of trouble this off-season. I don’t really think King was a bad apple, he just didn’t make good choices but I really do wish him the best. The guys that we have now have a different attitude about them. First, kudos to Richard Samuel for being a team player first and foremost. However, a potentially great linebacker,( size, speed, intelligence) is lost to sit behind a freshman who will be given every opportunity and then some to start. I just get tired of seeing athletes who show potential to be great at one position shuffled around for four years and never get to show what they can do…Brandon Miller, Kiante Tripp anyone?

Adapt and overcome… I do think RS will be a bulldozer on short yardage. He does know the blocking schemes better. By mid season If Malcome is healthy, or Crowell is the”real deal” do you move him back to LB? sit him on the bench? Time will tell. I hope he is 10 times better than before and sets some records.Would be better for everyone if Crowell can redshirt. Not a more desrving guy on the team. I’d love to see Samuel gain 1200 yards just to make CMR look stupid. He’s the epitome of a team player, and CMR and company have no idea how to evaluate and/or use talent. While they waste his eligibility due to lack of planning and coaching, others maximize potential, Why is it that UGA constantly has issues that could affect the upcoming season. Every year it’s something. The lack of depth is really a telling tale. Like others, I think Richt is a good man, but wow, does he not plan at all for the future. He’s flying by the seat of his pants like always. I don’t think he has a clue how to fix things. He’s throwing what he can against a wall, and waiting to see what sticks. You just can’t run an SEC team like that. Hopefully this year will prove it one way or the other.

How about some facts!?!…: His name is SAMUEL, not Samuels……. According to the stats at the official UGA website, his “history of fumbles” includes 2 during his freshman year, when he only carried the ball 26 times, and 1 fumble in 2009, when he carried it 88 times. Are there some mystery fumbles recorded somewhere? He had 51 of his 88 carries in the first 3 games (OK State, SC and Arkansas) for 256 yards, with 4 catches and 34 receiving yards.
On the other hand, for those who keep pumping the fact that his career average is 4.63 yds per carry, if you take away the one 80 yard run in 2009 against Arkansas, his average for that season was only 3.62 per carry and his career average dropped to 3.96.
MAYBE he will be more consistent with more age and strength, but Coach Bobo also needs to adapt his playbook to include some running plays that takes advantage of Samuel’s strengths. This creativity has not been Bobo’s strong suit since being OC. Otherwise, we would not have seen Carlton Thomas repeatedly getting flattened trying to run between the tackles. But, let’s face it. With our shortage of proven offensive linemen, and lack of depth as well, we may have to find other ways to score, unfortunately.

MarineDawg,
Well said about 1953. I don’t recall, in reading these blogs, anything good he has had to say either. If he is expecting perfection every year from any team, he is always going to be disappointed. I am not even sure he is really a DAWG fan. Most likely he is just on here to try and cause dissension, but that is his business. UGA will do Ok, and this was a good move by CMR.
As for Mr. Samuels. Where can we get 84 more like him. An unselfish young man that puts team first. This is what team sports is suppose to be all about. He is a physical specimen who is in good shape, and he is going to be a load for anybody he runs against. He will do much better this time at RB I think, as he is stronger, dedicated, more mature and I am sure he did not forget how to play the position. It might be a stop gate type move, but it could turn out to be highly successful. A need has been filled and can improve the team. That is what it is all about in the long run. He can make the offense better and himself as well.

Perhaps you need to worry about your own team and offer Saban some sound, helpful advice. Perhaps he would appreciate it since you know so much about football. Hey Lazlodog and marinedog: I grew up in Athens and graduated from UGA in 1985. I have supported Richt most of the time but he has done nothing over the last several years to show me this program is improving. If you can’t handle criticism, get out of the kitchen. Someone criticizes the program and you call us “fair weather” fans. So let me get this straight: if your boss criticizes you for not doing a good job, or you going to say he is just a terrible boss? Oh, that’s right…you two boys are victims here. I guess Richt is a victim too when he gets criticized.

Bobo is a quarterback coach hired by Richt to be a OC. Just like Samuel was a RB that Richt said ought to go to LB so he could run off CK & WE, just to move Samuel from LB after a year back to RB. This is because Richt just got a revelation from Heaven to put RS back at RB due to the fact that he has a great attitude and he’s one of the fastest players on the team. LIES all LIES that dumb kool-aid guzzlers like idiot MIKE and silly WEST uga swallow by the dirty milk jug gallon. These kind of loons respect CMR’s 2-8 record vs.UF. Richt can’t tell the truth to mediocre fans because they love the mediocrity outcomes of all the poor decisions that’s crippling a once proud but now mediocre program. Bobo can barely coach qbs much less coordinate a whole offense. Meanwhile Richt is screwing up so bad with personnel it would make a wet behind the ears, rookie, pee-wee league coach jealous. I would not be surprised at all to see more performances out of this team like we witnessed in the Liberty Bowl, when the offense barely mustered a measley SIX points vs. mighty Conference USA powerhouse, Central Florida, a team even Savannah State has beaten in the past. That game vs. UCF was so long & boring, I fell asleep and then changed the channel to watch Judge Greg Mathis. The mediocrity is building to idiotic levels at UGA. You delusional reprobate wannabe fans enjoy the final year of the mediocrity. This time next St.Mark will be working full time in the ministry where he rightfully belongs. I hope he takes the whole bunch of kool-aiders with him. May we never forget CMR must have been drunk from his own kool-aid when he said he recruited Cam Newton to come to UGA as a TE. That’s an example of just how out of touch and delusional CMR has become. bow-wow to all you kool-aid reprobates.

I hope this works out for UGA. If the young man can tote the rock and be successful, it will help alleviate the problem with experience at RB we now have. My worry is, do they move this young man around if the other RB’s get the game time they need to do the job, yet again. It is important to be fair to this young man as well.

Yea let Samuels practice and have him ready as a 3rd place back but I know where this is going he’ll start and wont do anything at tailback. And we’ll use him for several games because HE KNOWS THE PLAYBOOK AND CAN BLOCK
He’s not an SEC tailback. If someone farts he falls down.

First Kudo’s to Mr. Samuels he is a poster boy for Team First! Second while he does seem to be a better natural fit at LB it seems he is OK with the move and understands the reasons behind it. So if he does I think we should, its not his fault Ealey left or King couldn’t/won’t cut it in the classroom. He is being called on to help his team at a time when he is needed. If we weren’t opening the season with Boise and USCe this may not be needed as we would have some time for IC and Boo to show what they can do and the OL to jell. But we are and they won’t have the chance, our best chance of winning early is to have a RB who has some experience and KNOWS THE PLAYBOOK AND CAN BLOCK….how anyone who has ever watched football thinks those two things aren’t important is beyond me. Good Luck Richard no matter how this turns out you have proven your a DGD!

Samuel is a true team player, I think everyone knew this was going to come it was just a matter of when. My only hope for him is that he will get an opportunity to prove himself, it will be a bad move if he doesn’t get but a couple of mop up plays a game. I always thought the guy was a pretty good runningback, hopefully with his added weight he won’t be as easy to take down.

I don’t agree with this move but I understand it after some thought.
1.) Richard is an example of the “New Georgia Way”-Put the team first
2.) We now have a back who DEFINITELY can block a blitzing linebacker or safety
3.) The other 2(Crowell,Malcome) have been reported to be out of shape somewhat.
4.) The other 2 are freshmen
The only thing I’m wondering is this:
How does this play into our offensive gameplan?
We now have Figgins at 265 and Samuel at 243 in the same backfield.
That can be interpreted 2 ways:
1.) We are going to try and become a power running team and let our defense carry the day or..
2.) We were more worried about pass protection from the backs

I haven’t seen this mentioned(if I missed it, my bad!) Does anyone remember that Richard Samuel started UGA when he was 16 years old?! He was 17 his first season, and 18 the next season when he started at running back. He is just now 20 years old and has been here 4 years! He is a good guy with his head on straight. This is the type of LEADER this team needs! I love my dawgs, but I know that we had a lot of ME people on this team. In order for us to turn it around, we have to have WE people!
Thank you Richard for being classy and doing what you can to help this team!

My understanding is we also recruited Lattimore. So if we would of gotten him, last year and the current team looks different and Richt is not an idiot? Sometimes things just do not go your way. Overall Richt has been a succesful coach running a clean program. If I had any complaints it would be the OL recruiting and some Bobo play calling, but life ain’t perfect. It would of been hard to predict for anynone that both King and Ealey were going to be busts.
Samuel does not have the vision but is a bruiser and did average 4.6 yards a carry. We need experience for the first two games. I see him used less but still resourcefully over the next two years as a good balance with IC.

Coach Goff needed to move Robert Edwards from linebacker to running back+- 20 years ago and that turned out swell. Unfortunately, his knee was blown out but prior to that, he scored 5? TDs vs SC and was waging a war on UT and Peyton Manning when he blew out that knee.
Robert Edwards was briefly a great UGA back and a team player. His brother was too. Both spent some time in the NFL.
This may turn out equally well for Samuels. He is a good kid and as he relaxes, his physicality could really help UGA in what was a weakended position.

I guess when you look at it from this young man’s point of view, this is good for him. He wasn’t going to start at LB this year most likely, so he would have been a backup. At RB, he might see substantial playing time, so it is a plus move for him. The biggest thing about it though, is the fact that he is a team player. Don’t you wish UGA had 84, just like him on the team now?
Blaming the coaches for Ealey and King is wrong also. This young man is the anti-thesis of those two and UGA, as a team will be a lot better off in the long run, without them. Some folks are worried about his weight but I view that as a plus, since I think, it is probably a lot of muscles. With a 260 pound fullback leading the way, a 240 pound runner, has got to be just a little discouraging for the defensive guy to see coming at him. When you have the ball and are almost or maybe bigger than the guy assigned to take you down, it has got to get your attention. With both of them in there at the same time, it will be harder to just concentrate on Murray, so it could help the passing game as well.

At first, I did not like this switch, but after thinking it through, I have to agree with it. One of the main reasons Samuel was moved was because of his lackluster blocking. He had difficulty with the blocking schemes. As several people have pointed out, Samuel was a 16/17 year old when he got here. What is the average age of a college freshman? I do not know , but I bet it is around 18 or 19 . Do you think those extra years to grow and mature are not valuabIe? I love the kid’s attitude and have heard that he has matured greatly. He has also become much bigger and stronger. Please, please quit all of the negative criticism. Give the team and this young man your support!!

DawginLex agree with you I think this is a move for two reasons Boise and USCe. Boise has a smaller DL than our OL but were one of the top sack producing DL’s in the country. They are mobile and hostile I think we can pound them down as the game goes on and having two backs over 230 in the backfield should really help the OL do that and as you said we have to protect Murray. USCe has a good all around defense if our two backs can establish the run at all that will let Murray have a chance with the passing game. This is a stop gap measure for certain and for sure but if it helps us win those two critical first games…

Good lord, UGA fans are the delusional. The same homer fans were saying the EXACT same thing two months ago when Ealey left. Good riddance, the coaches must really feel awesome about King and the messiah Crowell.
Except here we are two weeks before fall practice and a rejected RB who was shunted off to LB is moved back to RB??
And UGA fans never miss a beat…the terrorizing LB whom all other SEC teams were afraid of meeting is now the next Hershel Walker. And now it isn’t the SEC RBs who are going to be afraid of running the ball, it is the SEC DL\LBs who are going to be cowering at blitzing because they might run into this terrorizing third string UGA player that never seems to actually make it on the field.

Great team attitude Richard! I feel a lot better about the situation at RB now. He is bigger now at 243 and hasn’t lost a step according to coaches. That should make him even harder to bring down and adds a bonus to pass protection. The “I” formation should be nasty with him and Figgins in front of him at 260. People need to get off his case and get behind him! The kid has only been given a 150 touches in his career, at most schools feature backs get 200 plus a season. Happy about the move! Ealey, King, and Thomas have all fumbled a ton, so quit hating on this kid for having a few drops and going down after initial contact. You can win games if 4.6 yds at time. GO DAWGS!!!

You folks saying this are either not UGA fans or dont know squat about football at this level.
Do you think CMR and BoBo really wanted to move RS back to running back? …. NO
Was there a choice here? What do you want; to go out and pick up another right quick off the street? – NO
Do you expect CMR to go into a season with 2 Freshmen and C. Thomas as your only players at RB? … NO
Unfortunante about CK and WE, but given the situation MR and company had to evaluate the talent pieces they have any put them in the best position for the team. Fortunantly RS is a team guy and has evidently had a great attitude about the switch.
I think it is the best move the team could make and absolutely necessary given the situation. He might not turn out to be a star back but he also may suprise us. He obviously has talent.
At that weight and speed he could really turn out to be a power back that we need and a new twist for our game that we haven’t had. He is older, and likely wiser now and seems to have a great attitude.
Time will tell, but it is not like there were any choices here folks.

dirty dawg – These kids are atheletes. They are worked into a position in HS that is a fit for the team. At the next level this talent may be better utilized in another position. Nothing wrong with that.
A guy with tight end skills at FB? I like it! Has blocking skills which is how we and most teams primarily use the FB. Size is a plus against the big OL. Has ability to catch the ball out of backfield on occasion and has carried the ball. I think this was a GREAT idea moving a TE experience to the backfield. Take some pressure off the RB too on blocking assignments which has always been an issue with MR. Let the runner focus on running and the FB on blocking.

I HOPE Coach Richt reads this: this is a terrible idea you are not only hurting this young man’s chances for going to the next level but also hurting your TEAM’s chances. Get this Coach Richt— if you go through with this—- You WON”T BE the Coach at the University of Georgia after this season—- As much talent and potential as this young man has at linebacker which is his natural position— He does not have it at running back, that was proven over and over again when you made him the starter in 2009. He mostly tripped over his own feet, went down on first contact which in most cases amounted to the defense putting a hand and in some cases fingers on him and he fumbled and routinely missed blocking assignments. He made one decent run the entire time.
And to all of you Fellow Dawgs who think it is a good idea— while applaud Richard Samuel for being a dam good dog and agreeing to this. I respectfully disagree with you and YOU need to take those Rose colored glasses off and realize how big of a mistake this move really is. Coach Richt is making a very grave mistake and once again is not only hurting this young man’s future but his own team’s chances as well. Richard Samuel has the potential to be a great player at linebacker. As great a potential at linebacker his potential at running back we already know and in my humble opinion which is backed up by watching him at running back previously is a complete waste of talent and time and will not help the situation at running back but further hurt the team’s chances. A better idea would be to go out and use one of remaining scholarships that wasn’t used for this class and get a Juco Running Back.
Anyways I hope and pray that I am wrong and I have to eat my own words.

King’s failure to qualify should not have been a total surprise. Ealey’s motivations (or lack thereof) should have also been clear. Like with Tripp, the staff is again reacting instead of being proactive. Not to mention that it has been pretty obvious, even to us arm-chair quarterbacks, that neither Ealey nor King were SEC-talent and to have expected them to suddenly produce would be kool-aid guzzling at its finest.

This is a GREAT move. Samuel was 17 – 18 years old when he was in the backfield before. For Richt to START a true freshman, he not only must not only have seen a potentially special running back, he must have also been extremely intelligent to be able to grasp the pass blocking schemes. Trust me, he will be a huge asset in our backfield.
IMHO, the mistake was made when he was transferred to LB. At the time, both King and Ealey were coming off their best game of their careers against Tech, and if I remember correctly, Samuel requested the move to help a depleted group at LB. He was recruited as a 5 star LB/RB. As time progressed, Jarvis transferred in at LB and Ogletree changed positions to LB. I believe Samuel could have stayed in the backfield and as he matured, he would have given both King and Ealey all the competition they wanted.
He knows the pass blocking shemes, he’s now a 20+ year old junior who is a MAN @ 6′2″ 243lbs., he runs a 4.4 40, AND HE WILL MAKE A HUGE POSITIVE DIFFERENCE. Just a great move…a GREAT move by Samuel and the coaches!
One more thing, to all my fellow UGA fans, please just ignore the comments from the haters and they will go away. They are jerk fans of other schools that have nothing better to do with their time than get on a UGA blog and try to rile us up. Just like a child throwing a temper tantrum, if you igore them they will stop and go away. The only way they will keep commenting is if you take their bait and respond.

Richard will do good at running back until Crowell gets his feet under him and learns the system. At least he already knows his assignments. But I was eager to see what he could do at linebacker. He was a 5 star linebacker out of high school, not at running back.

This is a great move.
Samuel now has maturity and is bigger and tougher than ever.
He’ll pass that toughness and confidence along to Crowell.
In return Crowell will teach Samuel how to make some cuts.
If the O Line can actually block this season we may have an offense that can move the ball on the ground.
Oh I forgot………………Bobo is still calling plays.

I agree with people on here that Samuel is a team player
But this kid is no running back as shown in the past
Richt and Booboo are selfish, they put themselves in the situation they are in and now they want another player to ruin his draft stock chances by making him move to a position that is not suited to his talent
We have Malcolm and we have Crowell if they cant do it I can tell you Samuel will not as proven in the past. He’s better off honing his skills at linebacker and not trying to save two coaches jobs
I rather see Brandon Smith play scat back on several plays than this stupidity

For those who critcize this move, you are failing to realize that sometimes you have to do whatever it takes to try to field the best team possible. Naturally, in a perfect world, it would have been nice to not have the issues we’ve had with running back, offensive line, etc. But, for those who want to throw their hands up in the air and fire all the coaches everytime something goes wrong, you’re not being realistic. Things just don’t always go right. Injuries happen, and out of 80 kids, not all are going to behave; not all are going to be Rhode scholars.

First off he was not a 5 star running back he was a 5 star Middle linebacker and projected as a starter right out of high school. People seem to forget that to get him to come to UGA Coach Richt, Garner whoever promised him a shot at playing running back. He was given more than an opportunity to show/prove he had the ability to play running back. It was a miserable failure. His true average was closer to 2.7 yards per carry which got bigger on 3 runs of over 40 yards. Yes he has homerun speed but as was clearly shown he lacks vision, he tripped over his own feet a lot, went down on nominal contact a lot, fumbled a lot and missed blocks.
Anyway as I have said before I hope and pray I am wrong and that I have to eat my own words because in saying that it would mean we have a great season.

The part I don’t understand is why hasn’t he been able to get on the field as a linebacker. Was he hurt, was he having trouble picking up the assignments, or were we just so deep that his lack of experience held him back. I have to agree that he did not have the cutting ability that you want, but he does have tremendous speed, and with the extra weight, maybe more power. Like I said earlier, some times you are forced to go a different route. Maybe, between Crowell, Malcome, Samuel, and others we’ll have enough depth that we can mix it up, to get by. We really don’t have that many options. It’s not like they are gonna let us trade for another back, or bring back Herschel. Either way, you have to feel good about a kid who wants to do anything to help his team.

While I applaud Mr. Samuel for an outstanding and unselfish attitude, I’m wondering if this move was made because he wasn’t developing into an SEC calibre LB. Also, I’m wondering why we didn’t move Justin S-W into an RB position…he is lightning fast, perfect size, and is a threat to “go all the way” whenever he touches the ball. And, he probably commands the attention of two DBs all the time. Hmmmmm, sounds very similar to Percy Harvin.

Coach Richt will win his 100th game this year in a period of time much less than it took Vince Dooley or Wally Butts to win that many. Fans thought those coaches were Football Gods. Give the man a break and recognize him for what he is. A better than average coach. And look for Georgia to win 10 games this year!
Now I’ll get back to the high school blogs where I spend most of my time. Go Dawgs and Vikings!

AViking. You are comparing apples to oranges. Dooley came in when the program was way down. They played 10 games a year instead of 12. No conference championship game either. 11 games was the maximum number of games you could play in a year compared to up to 14 now. Plus CMR, whom I actually like, came in when the talent level was very good. In fact, his best years were when Donnan’s recruits were playing the key roles. I agree CMR is a better than average coach.

You have to get near the endzone first to run a goal line package.
Appears that the “rumors” about Crowell showing up out of shape, puking and unable to finish summer workouts were more accurate than thought.

I’m not particularly excited about this move since we have seen him at RB before. He has speed but not vision or elusiveness. He does not break many tackles and he seems to run “scared” at times.
People talk about the 80-yard run versus Arky. I saw the play. The hole was huge and it basically entailed a straight line sprint to the endzone.
It clearly shows that we are in need of help. I just hate to see his talent misappropriated.

Switching him back and forth doesn’t do his future career any good. He’s not a typical 2 way player. Hopefully he’s more mature than he was as a frosh. Like many have said as a RB he didn’t have any moves except forward. Seemed to trip over his own feet or the grass and went down w/o much of a hit. He fumbled too many times as well. Yet, hope he does well.
