Once again Georgia has suffered a scooter casualty.
Derrick Lott, a sophomore defensive end from Kennesaw, suffered a “lower leg injury” while driving his scooter Friday afternoon.

Lott
“There was an accident around 3 or 3:30 p.m. yesterday on Butts-Mehre property,” UGA Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said Wednesday. “The driver of a scooter made contact with a fixed object and suffered a non-serious injury. The accident scene was completed by police but no citations were issued.”
Lott was taken by ambulance to St. Mary’s Hospital where surgery was performed by Dr. David Sailors Tuesday night. Lott is expected to be out four to six weeks, according to Ron Courson, UGA’s director of sports medicine.
Lott is a 6-foot-4, 303-pound sophomore out of North Cobb High School who is currently listed as the backup to DeAngelo Tyson at defensive end. He was redshirted as a freshman in 2009 following ankle surgery and played in three games last season, finishing with seven tackles and a tackle for loss.
Georgia has had more than its share of scooter incidents. Players have received all manner of citations over the years and baseball player Chance Veazey was paralyzed from the waist down in an accident with a car in 2009.

Ban all scotters! Make their big a$$ walk around campus, a little exercise wont hurt. Issue school owned bicycles for that matter. Every year multiple incidents happen with these stupid scooters. “Fat man is little coat” doesnt work. Big man on little scooter isn’t much better. 6′4 303lbs on a scooter. Did he really think he could turn that thing once it got up to speed. Where is the video of the crash? That would be hilarious. Injured dawg or not.

@Jeff have you been on a college campus in the last decade? Scooters are the transport of choice easy to ride, park and cheap to operate. And if you have ever had to pay the parking tickets college students get driving cars and parking on campus and nearby you’d understand the colleges and city police have a real racket going there…you can park a scooter a lot of places that you can’t get a car.

@WDE: I attended UGA from 2005-2009 and the entire I understand completely understand that a scooter is a great means of transportation, that’s not what I’m arguing against. I’m saying that someone is buying these expensive scooters for the athletes and I sure hope no NCAA rules are being broken. As anyone on campus at UGA knows, you still have to pay license/registration fees and you still must pay to park. The only free way to travel on campus, besides walking, is to ride a bicycle (which is what I did). I’m just wondering why approximately 1% of the general student population (mainly the super rich kids) own scooters yet at least 70% of the athletes own one.

Have you ever priced a scooter? The scooters these players are riding cost, at most, $1000. And you can finance them. So you pay $50 a month, at most. And you basically don’t have to pay for gas cause they get 100 miles to the gallon.
99% of UGA students drive a car. Do you think UGA is paying for that?
Athletes ride scooters because it’s what they can afford.

Oh look, here comes Mr. McFeely the postman with a package. Uh, oh. It is a notice from the scooter repair service. It says that we have to increase our line of credit with them because we have no more available. I’ll call Geg and have him take care of this. Maybe we should give these kids classes on how to ride the scooters. I’ll call Mike Bobo and have him draw up a game plan for scooter training. Sure hope we have enough players around by the time the season starts. Oh well, this will give me more wiggle room when the season falls apart and they are calling for me to be fired. I can’t help it if if ours players are not very bright. I only recruit them. Oh well, enough of that. What should we do today kids? I have a good idea. Let’s go swimming! It will help take our minds off of football.

@Lyle: a cheap Vespa starts around $2-3k, even when you have everything paid for that’s still a good chunk of change for many student athletes (remember Tony Cole barely able to buy food? He had a full ride too). I don’t know why so many student athletes ride scooters, but I just hope the athletic department regulates this and is on top of keeping UGA out of hot water with the NCAA.
Also, good point about scooters not being the only big ticket item these guys roll with. I’ve seen football players with plenty of other expensive equipment that members of the general student population do not own. This includes brand new escalades, electronics, etc. I understand some of these items are bowl game gifts, so I’d hate to make any sweeping guesses as to whether or not rules are being broken, I just hope they aren’t.

glad to hear you’re a walker. I don’t own a car. I bike and walk. And that’s what I did when I was a student at UGA.
But I think people hold student-athletes to different standards than they hold other students or themselves.
I’d rather them drive scooters around than cars.
UGA is larger than most cities in the state of Georgia (in terms of population).
As was pointed out, with a population that size, accidents happen. Some of them are going to involve student-athletes.
You can’t imagine how many accidents, traffic violations, DUI’s, etc. occur among a student body of almost 35,000.

They aren’t driving Vespas. They are driving a brand you’ve never heard of, and they buy them off Baxter street for very cheap. I actually ran into Branden Smith and 5 or 6 other UGA players in a scooter shop on Baxter St. the summer before Smith’s freshman season. They were shopping for CHEAP scooters.
Vespa is one of the most expensive scooters you can buy.

Here we go again, folks.
These athletes should be running to classes with ankle weights so that they don’t pass out in the fourth quarter like they have been doing the past few years. Does Dr Richt have any rules about riding on cycles?
Maybe when these players take themselves out and let down their team with stupid accidents, their athletic scholarships should be pulled for a year. How about that?

Football players ride scooters more than the general student population because: (1) they usually live on campus longer and it isn’t a short walk from ECV to Butts; (2) it’s WAY cheaper than owning a car and, for most of them, it’s the only vehicle they own (remember Mudd Cat’s car?); (3) there is no bus service to Butts-Mehre; (4) even if they own a car, there isn’t enough parking at Butts-Mehre for more than ten of them to drive over.
It isn’t a conspiracy…it’s convenient.

You freaking haters on campus, off campus in North Georgia, South Georgia, and any other place do nothing but hate on these athletes. Jeff Why do you even write this stuff to give these never gonna be blogger’s ammunition to strike down these athletes. Average student makes a mistake it’s not news (notice I said average) but a ball player and it’s everywhere. Twitter,Facebook, ESPN, and so much more. Damn don’t people realize these are Young Men just trying to make it. I’d like to see how many of you can go to school, practice, film study and most of them maintain a decent GPA. The next time you turd’s wanna put down an athlete look him in the eye if you have the heart. That I know will never happen.

You guys really need to get out and travel some. Scooters are all over every school in the country. Your boy Obama has gas at 3-4 bucks a gallon and the kids can’t afford to fill up a car. Plus the school won’t give half of ‘em parking passes anyway. Scooting around campus is the only way to get from one end of campus to the other between classes…..but wait, I forgot. Most of you nimrods never went to school in Athens anyway. It doesn’t matter, it’s all going to work out fine for everyone when we kick the Boys State Bronco butts back to I de Ho

Maybe if the players ran to class and around campus, we wouldn’t have scooter accidents nor would they be out of shape in the fourth quarter.

Haha wow people really have some quality opinions on here. How do you people take the facts I’ve gathered from my own two eyes (almost no general pop. students ride scooters, almost all athletes ride red and white uga-themed scooters) and turn it into me bashing student athletes, me hating on rich people (I mean “job creators”), etc.? All I wanted to know was if anyone knows how the athletes obtain these scooters and if any rules are being broken. Even if they are buying cheap scooters on Baxter street, they still must pay the same price everyone else pays. Obviously no one here is connected enough with the athletes to answer this question.
This was the first and last time I’ll participate in one of these discussions, Bill Maher is right about there being a lot of stupid people in this country.

Lol thanks Big Dawg for proving my point about the United Stupid of America. Way to completely miss my point.
One of the greatest things I learned during my time as a student at UGA was to think critically and question the world around me. Maybe if someone at Ohio State had questioned the tattoos, Pryor’s cars, etc. they wouldn’t be suffering sanctions. Like I said before, it’s very possible no rules are being broken here. I’m just observing something that is occurring on campus and asking a question about it.

Do they have scooters at the the University of Colorado, the University of Central Florida or Miss State?

Get well soon Derrick Lott. As for the misplaced Nebraska Cornhusker fan who keeps popping up on this Georgia blog : BE GONE !! We lost respect for Nebraska back in 1991, when our Clean Ole Fashion Hate rival, Tech ripped the Huskers 45-21 in the Citrus Bowl for a share of the title that year. Seems to me you ought to take your sour grapes over to the Tech blog. I’m sure they would love rubbing it in on you since NU is one of the few schools they own. LOL !!:O )

Reality,
If muscles needed to be sewn back together or possible tendons were severed, it would require surgery. Kind of hard to say if it was major surgery or not. I would say with a time frame of 3-6 weeks it was mostly muscle damage and the kid will be just fine. Accidents happen.

kids ride scooters at every university all over the country. not just athletes. why? because they are cheap to buy and require almost no gas.
there are tons of non-athletes at UGA riding scooters.
i even saw a nurse in scrubs leaving Athens Regional Medical Center on a scooter yesterday.
