Brent Benedict, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Jacksonville who abruptly left UGA last month, plans to transfer to Virginia Tech.
That’s according to a report by the Florida Times-Union. Benedict has not returned phone calls and messages from The Atlanta Journal-Constitution since he quit the team for “personal reasons” on June 26.
Benedict told Times-Union’s Hays Carlyon he chose the Hokies over Florida, Clemson and Marshall.
“I liked Virginia Tech the first time around,” he said. “It’s a great program with a coaching staff that’s been there awhile. They win games and do well in the ACC. I’m really excited to get up there.”
Benedict (6-5, 312), a former four-star prospect and Under Armour All-American, is being hailed in Virginia as the fifth commitment of the Hokies’ 2012 recruiting class. Even though he was released from his scholarship by the Bulldogs, Benedict will have to sit out one year per NCAA transfer rules. He will be a third-year sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining when he’s activated for the 2012 season in Blacksburg.
Benedict was recruited to Georgia as a left tackle before he was sidelined with a devastating knee injury in October of his senior year. The injury, which included nerve damage, required a complete reconstruction and extensive rehabilitiation. The Bulldogs, who had accepted Benedict’s commitment the previous summer, never wavered on their scholarship offer.
Benedict was medically cleared by UGA in March, though was held out of some drills during spring practice. He was listed as the No. 2 right guard on the preseason depth chart.
Benedict has never disclosed his reasons for leaving but indications are he had disagreements with the Bulldogs’ strength and conditioning staff over training methods during off-season conditioning. He was released from his scholarship at UGA following a meeting with head coach Mark Richt on June 26.
The Times-Union asked Benedict if he chose Virginia Tech over Florida and Clemson because the Bulldogs will play those teams in coming seasons.
“Maybe that was in the back of my mind a little bit,” he said. “It could still happen with a bowl game. My main focus was choosing the place where I felt I fit the best. Virginia Tech was the best fit for me.”

With him going to another major team says that he wanted another year to get over his surgery and apparently the doctor at Georgia didn’t feel it was necessary. CMR gave him a full release , to go anywhere. That is total class. If he is not happy at Georgia he should leave. Good luck to him.

I’m sure when Sturdivant went down for the third time it scared Benedict into thinking that the reason Sturdivant kept tearing up his knees was because he was pushed too hard. The first time I saw Sturdivant as a Freshman I said with a massive upper body and spindles for legs he will be very lucky not to have major knee problems. I was just sorry that it was that obvious . Alabama just had one of their players go out with a torn ACL. He has those same little knees and little lower legs that Sturdivant did. Benedict feels pain when he over exerts , which is probably because he doesn’t have enough strength in them and thus is why he was pushed so hard in S&C and because scare tissue is breaking loose, which is normal. It is scary after surgery but the faster you get back your strength and motion the better you will be. I don’t blame Benedict for being timid . It’s all about getting him ready for Pro ball and if it takes him 2 more year to accomplish that he will take it. At least he will not have the same problem as Sturdivant. Benedict’s lower legs are a lot bigger , not the same structure. Sorry things didn’t work out at Georgia.

It was a great run for Coach Richt, but it’s quickly coming to a close. With his public statements in the media about missionary work being his primary focus in life, it is apparent that UGA football is just not his main priority. Therefore, he is basically stealing money from UGA.
He is such a good guy, that it has been hard for fans to come to grips with the idea that he is simply not giving it his all, but for the betterment of the program, it’s time for him to move on to his higher calling. After the 0-2 start, it probably will be easier to convince people of all of this.

After reading some of the post concerning Coach Richt I think back to the 70s with Coach Dooley having years with 6-5 records. Wondering if he would have been kept in todays climate. Every Coach if you stay somewhere for some time will have some down years. Ask Dooley, Paterno, Bryant, Dodd if they knew what caused them they could make more millions on a book. I think alot of this issue with players leaving is due to a change in strength/conditioning and less tolerance for personally what’s required to be a Dawg! CMR will be fine after this year because cream always rises to the top! Go Dawgs!

I agree with you WinderDawg, about the ups and downs with the up and down years. One only has to look toward the winningest coach of all time to make that determination, Joe Pa. I hate losing all these kids too, but people need to realize that this was absolutly necessary because that is what you all have been crying for the last 4-5 years. This team needs to be tougher. coach Richt needs to be more strict bla bla bla! Don’t start crying now. If it takes us losing every game this year to right this ship it is OK by me. And if you think that a coach with the highest winning percentages in the country much less all time coach at UGA should go, then you my friend, are a fool!!!!!!

I don’t care what his excuses are. Uga honored his scholarship regardless of the injury, and he received top of the line rehabilitation that he would not have received had this not been the case. He should have more loyalty than that. I read in another blog that he chose VA tech because they have 4 graduating linemen. Surely, he could have expected playing time at UGA this year.

Glad he found a school that suits him. After a couple of knee surgeries myself I understand the physical pain of rehab and how much the mental aspect plays into it. Best of luck to him.
As far as CMR, he hasn’t fogotten how to coach (granted Bobo still has some predictability issues on 3rd down). Physically, UGA’s been getting whipped at the line of scrimage the last few years and owned in the 4th quarter. Hopefully, the new S&C coach will help with this. That said, the team desperately needs a leader (ala DPollack) to inspire and push them. Hopefully, someone will emerge this year – from what I read Ray Drew might be that type of person but he’ll only be a freshman.

The Benedict situation causs mixed feelings because the truth is, many shools would have rescinded the scholarship offer after the injury during his senior year of high school. When the loyalty is not reciprocated it is easy to be mad a the kid; some will be and that is understandable.
However, if his heart wasn’t in it, he would be the same kind of player that has driven us crazy with incnsistency over the last couple of years.
Savannadog hit the nail on the head: Many have clamored for CMR and staff to toughen up. Apparently, this has happened and the predictable attrition has occured. Now many are whining about that. Others who have never played or coached the game at this level for one minute are also offering suggestions about Richt’s employment.

I agree that the injuries to Sturdivant probably played a role in this kid packing up and heading out. UGA seems to have a history of under-developing the lower half of the body, and then over working said half. I have known two people personally who were lineman at UGA (one actually ended up transferring) that had numerous knee injuries. Both tell me that the attribute their issues to the spring and summer conditioning structure. That said, I agree with most that is was classy for Richt to let this kid move on if he had those concerns, especially with the state of offensive line at this time. Not many coaches would have been so generous.

Wake up guys. MGarity has already said that Richt’s future is not tied to wins and losses. It’s tied to making improvement. This vaugue analysis allows McGarity lattitude to review the entire program, strengths and weaknesses.
As long as donations are high, no major changes will be forthcoming – this year or next. Read your guide – donations were not hurt by last season. I for one support Coach Richt, as I want more than just success on the field. Richt is the kind of man I would want my son to play for, and I can’t say that about too many coaches these days. Richt will, however have to deliver. McGarity won’t be patient too long, but hard numbers and wins and losses will not decide if Richt stays.

Anything can be worked out. It appeas Benedict was unwilling to try and work things out. I have heard from some people that Joe T was unwilling to change and that Benedict and his father thought it would result in further injury.

We do not need a mean spirited coach like some of the fans on this site. Sad to see any player leave. It seems something is not right in Athens would probably be an understatement. it may be just putting in new philosophies of conditioning, it may be inconsistency in training and preparing players to play (some having to learn how to block and others being given the ok when they are signed), Who knows, but one thing is for sure, what some of you want takes time to implement. Preparation precedes perfection. Give the man a chance to right the ship. If he loses some players the brick did not fit the new building. Get the new building completed before you decide if it meets your approval and rigid inspection. Go Dawgs!!!!!

JOE T. is elevated to the strength and conditioning director to bring more toughness and physicality, and now you don’t have enough offensive lineman to implement it on the field! That’s why they were pushing BENEDICT as hard as they were. Now, with BENEDICT, STURDIVANT, and HARMON gone, you simply can’t afford any injuries to your starters. The dropoff in talent and experience from the 1st team to what passes as your offensive line depth is incredible. In fact, your 2nd team offensive line is worse off physically already, with Long’s back, and Lee’s “asthma like” conditions. But it’s not just physical shortcomings. There should be serious doubts as to whether or not these backups, and your incoming freshman class (ranked 9th in the Conference by rivals) have the athleticism and toughness to even compete at this level. Of the ONLY 5 offensive line prospects signed, one is a long snapper (Theus), one’s a little brother of a current player (Long), one a legacy (Dantzler), one’s had knee surgery (Ward), and one got pushed all over the field in Under Armour workouts (Dabell). It’s really incredible for UGA , or any other major football program for that matter, to be in this position. Richt/Bobo had to have known in advance the liklihood of attrition that in fact took place due to preexisting injuries, prexisting grade issues, and poor talent evalution. To not know would border on negligence. In the face of all this, to then bring in the type of offensive line class they brought in this year should be troubling to Uga fans. It’s like Richt and Bobo are late to recognize problems, and then late reacting to them when they do. Somebody isn’t working as hard as they should, and when that happens, it’s normally going to cost you. I don’t think you can afford to conduct normal scrimmages and risk losing an offensive line starter. How can you not do that, and still be able to prepare for the physical nature of SEC football? There’s no way. LOOK– if your staff is communicating properly, and your head coach is “there”, both physically and mentally, then Uga would not be in this position Maybe it is time for the Richt/Bobo tandem to move on.

VT’s S&C program for lineman is actually geared towards protecting lineman’s knees. We had a while where we kept having guys blowout their knees, so Beamer made the S&C guys start adjusting things. They also have the linemen wear braces whether they’ve ever had a problem or not.
As for whether this kid is a quitter/traitor/etc….I have no idea, can’t speak to his motivations. I will say if I were a headcoach I would only want guys on the team that want to be on the team. A guy that decides he wants out, I wouldn’t want to risk creating a malcontent and the problems that could create in the locker room w/ the team.
He’ll find that the S&C program at VT though to be quite challenging to keep up with. That is if he wants any playing time. If he ends up wussing out, he’ll be riding the pine behind perhaps less talented guys, but guys that are willing to work harder and “want it” more.
The “look like Tarzan, play like Jane” types typically don’t see the field much under Beamer.

IMO, CMR’s approaching this season with a first year coaches mentality. The attrition rate will be high anytime “big” changes are made. Sounds like the S&C program is weeding players out, along with the change in attitude. My hope is that the “spots” on the Head Dawg can change. People often make short term adjustments only to settle back into their old routines once the fires wane. Best thing CMR can do is “surround” himself with good people, exibiting strength in areas where he is weak. Face it, we all have weaknesses.

And he is so uncomfortable still that he quit football at one d1 school, there is no way I would’ve taken a chance on the kid after he quit at uga. D1 sports medicine teams are extremely conservative because they know if they make a mistake and a kid comes back too soon that it could cost the kid millions of dollars. So for him to think that a S&C regimend is too much after 2 years, tells me the kid won’t ever be the same. For Benedict sake, I hope I’m wrong.

What’s the reason maybe for his transfer to Virgina Tech? Personal reason? Are there any leads or does someone dig more about his issue? But, I admire his courage, he really transferred and take risk without knowing what would be his position or what would happen to his career in this new team. Good luck to him!
