While I was offline and getting my computer serviced, Georgia’s most-recently-departed tailback Caleb King issued a statement through UGA’s sports communication office. I would have rather had him answer the questions I’ve been calling and texting and emailing him with the last several days, but I guess this will have to do.
In case you were vacationing in Fiji or something, King, the Bulldogs’ starting tailback, lost his academic eligibility at the end of this past week and will miss his senior season. As I reported in my original story, the NFL supplemental draft, which would have normally been conducted by now, remains his best and most viable option to continuing his football career.
Here’s the statement:
“My years at the University of Georgia have afforded me a tremendous opportunity to develop my skills on the field. Coach Mark Richt and the entire UGA football team and staff have been instrumental in my growth and development both on and off the gridiron. I have learned countless lessons that continue to mold me into a better individual and player. While I will miss my Bulldog family, I will continue to put my situation and future career in God’s hands. I look forward to pursuing an opportunity at the next level through the NFL’s supplemental draft and playing the game that I have loved since I was a young boy.”

Criminal records: I pulled it from SI….I agree it does seem to be missing some schools.
Good point.
My whole argument was no one should pretend to be holier than thou. While UGA has certainly had lots of off the field issues, we do not stand alone.
have a good day all…back to work,.

All schools have issues with players and UGA has had it’s sure and more than most lately. Who cares!
Nebraska,
The really sucky thing for you is that Nebraska is in Nebraska.

Many of the private shcools, the atheletes are not as strong, fast and tough as the public school systems atheletes for the most part. All I am saying is a “standout” at a private school may not fare as well as a standout from a public school system athelete…more betta stronga fasta~!

Nebraska left the Big 12 to go to the Big Ten(that can’t count) because Oklahoma and Texas owned them and prevented them from winning the conference.
At least we are trying to fix our issues and remain in the SEC and not run to the slow 10.

dawg_mike, I found the list, and to clarify a few things, they only investigated the teams who were ranked in the SI preseason top 25. Also, it was the number of players who have been charged. So to be fair to the players, some of them could have been false charges that were later dropped. But I don’t disagree with your point that every team has a few bad apples. I would be interested to see what the conviction rate is in contrast to the number of charges though.

Pretty safe bet he will not get drafted and not make an NFL team. Safer bet, he ends up in jail sometime during the next 24 months.

tough ending to a sad career for the young man. he could have easily took the reigns after the departure of Ealey and made a strong showing in his senior year. i wish the best for the young man, but if he hasn’t gotten it by now, he may never get it. unfortunately it looks as though Mr. King fell victim to the hype machine that is a high profile athlete. maybe he gets it together and finds sucess, but he is going to have to sort out his priorities in life to do so….

Good luck to Caleb but IMO he needs to play college in 2011 at a lower level and prove he can be a good teammate for a season.
Grades might be the issue though of trying to get into another school.

Hopefully, with the departure of King the “Age of Entitlement ” will be over at UGA. I have never seen a group of star athletes achieve less than the last two senior classes at Georgia. This incoming freshman class should shake up things on the practice field and make the Dawgs hungry for a great season. I hope Richt doesn’t turn into Dean Smith.(Who was the only person to hold Michael Jordan to 15 ppg?) Turn the young Dawgs loose!!

Not a chance King wrote this; it was written for him. Think ACADEMIC ineligibility. This is the level of writing he should have mastered to remain on the field. Instead, just another rock playing pro ball…or, maybe not.

Big Ten Champs Nebraska – so what you are saying is the NFL should stop drafting people who arnt exactly smart? That will certainly make for quality sports…..75% of those NFL players would be academically ineligible at UGA.

OMAHA, Neb. — Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman isn’t happy with coach Bo Pelini’s behavior.
Perlman told the Associated Press on Sunday that Pelini’s verbal assault of officials during Saturday’s game at Texas A&M did not reflect well on the university or the football program.
“I think it was very unfortunate,” Perlman said, “and I think it’s something we’ll have to address with Bo.”
The game was televised on ABC, and Perlman said he felt uneasy about the numerous camera shots of Pelini’s outbursts. Perlman spoke Sunday morning with athletic director Tom Osborne about Pelini’s conduct, and the chancellor said he, Osborne or both would talk to Pelini about his decorum.
Perlman wouldn’t speculate on whether disciplinary action would be taken.
“Bo has a lot of passion for his football team,” Perlman said, “and there is a strong upside to that. But again, overall, the conduct was unfortunate last night.”

his comment “can`t anyone express an opinion here” is as follows: Yes Nebraska, everyone has an opinion and can express it; however opinions are like rear ends…everyone has one and some stink worse than others.

Caleb, I wish you the best as you try to deal with the challenges that life brings. We all make mistakes, including all of the naysayers on this board. Learn from what has happened and put your faith in God’s hands.
It’s true that as a Bulldog fan, I had very high aspirations for you. But, at the end of the day, this is your life. Your career. Make the most of what you can and forget all the rest. I hope you can finish your college degree, as it is something that nobody can take away from you.

Somewhere in the NFL there has to be a General Manager saying to himself, “if we only had one more lazy, overrated, underperforming, self-absorbed Running Back who can’t obey team rules or follow the laws of society, we could be a Super Bowl team”.
Good luck in Oakland, Caleb.

I do think that a recruits GPA and SAT/ACT scores should be posted as prevelant as their 40 times, height, weight, and bench. Oh and possibly any disciplinary issues that the HS may have had to take. Might make some of us realize why a 5star recruit doesn’t translate into a good or even decent college player.
Also, NE Chumps how many of those Academic AAs were 4-5 star recruits. It really is impressive to see you ranked so high with smart athletes, but how many top 10 recruiting classes did you have over the last decade? The fact is you play against inferior competition and don’t need top recruits for the HC to keep his job.

Big Ten Champs Nebraska — it doesn’t say anything about the program, do you not realize how long ago Hines Ward graduated? A far as Nebraska goes — seems to me I remember Caoch Osborne being heavily criticized for playing his players in big games even though they were in some kind of trouble. Once again — it was that “win at any cost attitude”. No major program in the country is above their players making bad decisions — if you think otherwise you’re delusional. By the way, no one thinks you’re a Nebraska fan honestly coming on to a blog site about UGA. You’re a troll trying to stir up hate about UGA. You know how often I go surfing about the program at Nebraska — like never. Who in the SEC would be interested in what is going on at Nebraska? You’re a fake and an imposter.

Dnice….you are right. The Big Ten just does not get any love around here. Nor should they. They have fallen way behind the power curve and not respected as they once were. They are not big and slow like before. They are just big and average. Nothing to get too excited about. We have real football to enjoy down South.
