Linebackers: Promising group despite virtual makeover since last season
6:10 am July 11, 2011, by Chip Towers
Seventh in a series breaking down Georgia’s 2011 team by position . . .

Georgia is counting on junior Christian Robinson's leadership and play-making abilities at linebacker this fall. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
THE LINEBACKERS
- Projected starters: SAM Jarvis Jones (So., 6-3, 241), MIKE Christian Robinson (Jr., 6-2, 226), MO Alec Ogletree (So. 6-3, 236), WILL Cornelius Washington (So., 6-4, 260)
- Returning starters: Robinson started 11 games at the “Mo” inside linebacker last season and Washington started eight at the “Will” outside position. Alec Ogletree was moved to the Mo in the spring after starting five games at strong safety as a true freshman last season. Robinson moved to Mike.
- Others to watch: This is the much-anticipated debut season of Jarvis Jones, who had to sit out this past year after transferring to Georgia from Southern Cal. Jones (6-3, 241) is slated to start at “Sam,” or strongside outside linebacker, but first he has to clear some recently-raised eligibility issues. . . . Former starting tailback Richard Samuel will be playing his first season on defense for the Bulldogs. He redshirted his junior season last year while making the initial transition. He is currently second-team at “Mo” but could play outside linebacker if called upon. . . . Reuben Faloughi, Michael Gilliard and Chase Vasser will be counted on as backups.

Moving Alec Ogletree (9) from strong safety to inside linebacker was bold and potentially bountiful. (AP photo)
- Key losses: Georgia lost a massive amount of production from this unit. Gone are leading tackler Akeem Dent (126 tackles); pass-rushing specialist Justin Houston (10 sacks); No. 4 tackler Marcus Dowtin, who transferred out; and No. 7 tackler Darryl Gamble, who graduated. That’s 259 tackles, 14 sacks and 52 games played just from last season. The Bulldogs also lost linebackers coach Warren Belin to the NFL.
- Newcomers: Georgia signed five linebackers in February to shore up depth, including five-star prospect Ray Drew (6-5, 250) of Thomasville, who will be expected to contribute immediately. The Bulldogs also inked Sterling Bailey (6-5, 260) of Gainesville, Amarlo Herrera (6-1, 224) of College Park, Kent Turene (6-3, 225) of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., and Ramik Wilson (6-2, 218) of Tampa.
- Key developments: As alluded to earlier, the eligibility issues facing Jones threaten to dog Georgia up until the season opener like those facing A.J. Green did last year. A police investigation into alleged corruption within the ranks of the Columbus parks and recreation department revealed that some of Jones’ flights to Los Angeles his first season at USC were paid for by the department’s director from state funds. Even though Jones was at Southern Cal, the NCAA could require Jones to sit out games at UGA. Georgia has launched its own investigation and will fight to get the situation resolved well before the season opener, unlike last year’s fiasco with Green, who ended up sitting the first four games.
- Key question: This is year two of Georgia’s switch to a 3-4 defense under defensive coordinator Todd Grantham. But due to all the reshuffling, three of the four projected starters will be playing new positions. How quickly and how well will the group adapt to new assignments and new inside linebackers coach Kirk Olivadotti?
- Outlook: Uncertain but promising. If there were no issues facing Jones, it would be tempting to say this is an across-the-board improvement. But the drop from Jones to Vasser would be steep and moving Samuel back outside could be complicated. Meanwhile, moving Ogletree to Mo from strong safety was a bold move and, even though Grantham says he’s “100 percent certain” it was the right thing to do, it’s an uncertain how he’ll perform in games.
- Your turn: What’s your view of Georgia’s linebacker corps?

There is a lot of inexperience at LB position but the young men look like they have talent and size. If the DL steps it up like expected, it will help the LB’s out a lot. Either way though, they are going to have to be ready to hit hard, and take control of the middle layer of the defense. I think we have the coach to make this a success, but the first two games are going to be a baptism under fire so he has got to have them ready.

I hope the D is a lot better, because the offense will be hit and miss for starters. Most SEC teams have a three deep set at RB with 2-3 younger in the wings types. We do not. Our #3 is a walk on and our projected starter and never taken a snap in college. Here’s hoping that Crowell can be the real deal, But as the story states, physically, we look pretty good on D.

Free Richard Samuel. Hopefully, Ramik Wilson, Amarlo Herrera, or Kent Turene, can be adequate back ups inside thus allowing Samuel to be where he belongs, Running Back. Otherwise, Samuel at back up “Mo” as a junior basically ends his career. The kid really needs to move on to a school that’s willing to play him at running back, where his future lies. It hurts losing the experience of Dowtin and Nick Williams as well, especially Dowtin. Weird going ons in Athens as usual. Something’s always in transition .Always in some “rebuilding mode.” Ogeltree would have been another Blue at safety. I guess the emergence of Shawn Williams dictated the move.

Our front 7 will be dominant, the strength of this team! Tide Roll, for all the talk about UGA football you must not watch very much. Without a huge hole Samuel would run 3 yards until he ran into someone and fall down. He does not make people miss at all therefore LB is his best chance to play and move on to the NFL!

This team has a lot of question marks on both sides of the ball and the LB’s are no different. While this can’t help but make you nervous, the bright side to all of the reshuffling is that we are putting the most talent on the field regardless. Yes, they WILL make mistakes born from inexperience but talent always finds a way.
This team will be fun to watch. We may not have any fingernails left by mid-season but we’ll never bemoan a lack of effort from this bunch.

I can’t tell you who your 3rd string punter is, but I can tell you who’s married to Barb Dooley’s niece. It happens to be your offensive coordinator. It’s MIKE BOBO. What a coincidence. This stuff would never happen at BAMA. Saban wouldn’t allow it because it would be a BREACH of his duty to Bama players and fans to bring in the very best coach available. AND, the Bama administration wouldn’t allow it because it’s an INCREDIBLE CONFLICT OF INTEREST ! Only at UGA. What a program!

Feel free to NOT answer if the following questions are embarrassing or uncomfortable for you to answer. Since you appear to be quite knowledgeable and opinionated on a number of issues, they should be easy, however.
1. Do you think Alabama would have won more games last year with Cam Newton at quarterback or Greg McElroy?
2. On Bana and Cam Newton’s recruitment: choose one
A. Saban got outrecruited by Chizik
B. Saban chose to not recruit Newton
3. If the answer to #2 is B, what possible reasons do you think led to Bama passing on Newton?

Samuel needs to keep his but on defense. I for one grew tired of watching him put the damn ball on the ground. Also I am not a big fan of putting alot of stock in Spring games but Chase Vasser was a was wreaking havoc. I don’t know if the drop from Jones to Vasser can be said to be steep. I think thats a little dramatic imo. Dont give me Jones and his measurables, I want a football player who can go make a play. If we are without Jones for 2 games it is no where near as significant as losing Green last year. Finishing though about Samuels, some of you guys must have forgotten over two years just how often he was dropping the ball. It was painful. He is better served as a backup at ILB and special teams maven right now.
More questions potentially too hot for Tide Roll to answer

8:41 am
Again, since this may make you uncomfortable or be embarrassing to answer in this forum, please feel free to NOT answer if that is the case.
1. Do you think Saban is a good evaluator of talent?
2. Are you okay with it if Bama starts AJ McCarran over the Sims kid at QB?
3. If Saban does name McCarran the starting QB, do you think he is starting the best quarterback?
Answering may put you on the spot, if it does continue with your analysis of Georgia high school offensive linemen, which has added so much to this board over the past months.

Alabama got Saban because his ass realized he was a “fish” outta water with the Dolphins in the NFL and he was desperate to get back into college. Alabama was the tight program because it would legitmize the program since the last coach they hired never coached a game because he was “making it rain”. So Alabama backed into getting Saban. Pure luck has now given morons like Tide Roll the belief that Andrew Zoe could have won a National Title under Saban.

I know a young man that went to high school with Samuels. He has said that he would rather be at LB and most that watched and played with him, know he is a much better player at LB than he would be at RB. He appears to have to work hard as a runner, because he doesn’t have the natural skills that most RB’s have. His size helped him at that position in H.S. but it didn’t translate well to the college level.
UGA has the bodies to play RB, the experience level is is just not there yet. We have a natural dynamic runner in Crowell, but he lacks the experience at the college level. Crowell does have all the tools and the making of a great back. He just needs to mature a little physically and a lot mentally. I hope he will. He will just have to grow at the position. Malcom is a bruiser of a back, but has to hold onto the ball and not give it up. he just doesn’t look as comfortable as Rb as you would like, but more experience may do the trick. Thomas is small, coughs up the ball, but is a good option on some plays, but could not hold up for game after game as a starter. He is just too small to continuously take the pounding. He is a good change of break RB, but no full timer. He might be a good one to have if you have a two back set, every once in a while. He probably is not big enough to be a real effective blocker.

UGA’s defense and LB corp should be a positive in 2011 in year 2 of the 3/4 scheme.
Jones should be OK – all Jones has to say is that we was not aware of any illegal transportation arrangements – as the NCAA has set a precedent in the Cam Newton case.
Samuel needs to stay at LB – he was a better LB in HS than RB. All of his workouts and training have prepared his body type to be LB – not RB.
Carlton Thomas is not the answer at RB – he is a third down situational player – great speed to hit the corners – by all means – keep him away from running between the tackles – he FUMBLES way too much – even the spring game – he lost the handle 3 times – including his touchdown run – the ball squirted out – but he had broken the goal line. Malcome, Harton and Crowell will be the answer.
I mm clueless about other SEC programs
July 11th, 2011
10:03 am
I suspect that most major programs in the SEC have issues like somebody quit or someone blew his knee and so and so went back home to be with Suzy Lou, etc. This has been going on for 50+ years that I have watched UGA with some stellar years and then, not so stellar in there. Last two years for UGA have been very bad.
One year a UGA D player in the mid 70s dove into Lake Lanier and badly cut up his shoulders and knees on submergaed barbed wire fencing and ended up not being a factor that year. It happens.
The thing about this year is that CMR has got to win big and has got to show a major turn around on this team with no car wrecks, DUIs, or flunk outs, apparel sales, etc. ………… or we make changes. Depth should always carry your program through the rough patches. We are lately, short in that regard and faced with key guys that are hanging on with bloody nails regarding grades or trouble off campus. Alumni are sick and tired of it.

Sounding like Larry Munson and Tide Roll – just do not see anything out of Georgia – again – more issues and too much transition – and the OL is a huge question mark….. again.
Hate it for Caleb King – but his career at UGA has been a bust – he never got over his broken leg and showed flashes of greatness – but nothing consistent. He has been his own worst enemy in terms of off field and academics.
His is off field issues and academics are not buttoned up – and translated to his preparation and on field perfromance as well.
Ealey and King gone – it is what it is – they were given all kind fo chances – time to move on.

There are 2 other TB on scholarship, plus the walk on that we saw a bit of in the G-day game. (I’d guess he get a scholarship granted now?) Not saying they are the answer to the RG, but an answer to your question.
Plus the mention of more B. Smith carries and perhaps others in some capacity. We are not without options, just known experience. Bringin somebody over on a permanent basis doesn’t really solve that plus I’d think that just creates the same depth issues someplace else. With Samuel, everybody knows he “could” be an emergency plan if it came to it. I see no point in announcing or declaring him, anything other than what he is, at this point.
My guess is that they just try a variety of different things in fall camp to fill in the 3rd, 4th, 5th option.

I wish both Ealey and King well. I do not think it it going to be that bad for the team. I do see Malcome turning it up this year. Hopefully, now that King will not take him under his wing, Crowell can mature and contribute this year. Keep Samuels @ LB. You will see a lot of Chase Vasser this year, I do not see a significant drop from Jones. Leave Brandon Smith on Defense, he is basically the same thing as Thomas, too small to run up the middle.

2. On Bana and Cam Newton’s recruitment: choose one
A. Saban got outrecruited by Chizik
B. Saban chose to not recruit Newton
3. If the answer to #2 is B, what possible reasons do you think led to Bama passing on Newton?

I don’t always agree with Tide Roll but I did want to address these questions. Alabama probably would have won more games with Cam as QB but regarding Question #2 I choose (C) Saban did not recruit Cam Newton because Cam committed to UF in 2006 and Saban did not sign on with Bama until 2007.

Does the NCAA really have the time to foolishly look at Jones’ travel arrangements by a basketball coach? If there is a penalty, they should tack it on to the So Cal penalty. If the NCAA suspends Jones, then UGA should lead the secession revolt and start a new coalition of 24 schools. I really think football will come to this one day.

Tide Roll your a racist. Your as racist as they come, its all about color for you. Who cares if UGA didn’t recruit Cam Newton. At the time they had former #1 overall pick Matthew Stafford at QB. So tell me why Saban didn’t recruit Newton out of Blinn? Instead he decided to stick with a non athletic QB with a noodle arm. Newton is a spread style QB and from watching Gruden grill him it doesn’t seem like he is that bright when it comes to the QB position. Newton is a run first QB, a pro style system is not a run first system. Heck look at Michael Vick. He has stated many times that he should have been more of a pass first QB when he first came into the league.

Didn’t Georgia have a qb from Texas in 2006, who was pretty good at throwing the ball? I saw Newton in high school and he was amazing. Georgia had Stafford and was building the team around him. Newton was being touted as the next Tebow and fit the fl offense at the time. So I don’t think you could really say that the Dawgs whiffed by not signing Newton. Besides that, we didn’t have an extra lawyer to be assigned to him and his 13 traffic violations and “flying, painted computer problems”. Auburn got lucky for 90 days and made it pay off. Whoaaaa Nelly!!!. I am not worried about our front 7 on D this year. Scheme is being understood alot better and the players look a little more able. I just hope that the front 7 can make the DB’s better. Rambo and Hamilton aren’t going to cut it. We actually had a top 30 pass defense last year, except on third down. Some could argue that this goes to play calling also, which I can see, but I saw Rambo trot around so many time. Ogletree looked liked our best bet as DB and now he moved to ILB. He is a beast for sure. I bet he will be dropped deep alot in 3 down plays. Like urlacher on the bears, or bruski did back in the day. I wish CTG would use some of the schemes the steelers use on occasion. 3-3-5 and just push Tree back to safety for a play or two. Confusion is the key.
I am a die hard Dawg fan through and through, but the beginning of next year is scary. I know Boise St. doesn’t play near the competition as the SEC does yearly, and Stats say there D-Line is a little skinny in the tush, but they are gamers. I hope our O-Line can hold up and especially with our RB’s running away from us. I Didn’t like King coming out of HS, and Samuel was just a hopeful 2 side star in my mind, both showed skills but no conviction, same for Ealey. I will say I thought Ealey was going to be dynamite regardless the level he played in HS. I think our D can handle BSt Offense but can our Offense handle BSt D?
Just the opposite Applies to SC. SC has good CB’s but I think TE usage will help us with their week LB corps. But we all must admit Garcia is still a good QB, (Shaw pretty good too) Jefferey is as good as AJ was for us, Lattimore bulked up and will freaking run over our Secondary, our big boys on the Dline better slow him down. One good hit from a LB after a quick grab by Big John could atleast make him second guess some head drivers he had last year against us.
Whatcha think, especially AltamahaDawg. Only a few guys have good convos on here. And Chip what is your feelings on BSt D-Line.

Great series, Chip. It is nice to refocus the gang on football. I think the only dimension I would have added is the unusual speed of the LB corps. They are very fast as a group. I believe Samuel was our fastest RB when Moreno was here, so he is very, very fast for an ILB. Washington is very fast for a guy his size, and Ogletree has safety speed. The neat thing about the 3-4 is the offense doesn’t know which LBs are the rushers, and CTG can blitz one frequently without sacrificing pass D. If they turn out to be good blitzers, their speed will be very tough on opposing QBs trying to throw. Imagine Samuel and Ogeltree in the middle–both may well be faster than the opposing backfield! Not that Robinson is slow by any means. My only concern is size and stopping power in the middle. Tree is one tough cookie, but we will have to wait to see how strong they are against runs. If our big NGs get in the O’s way really well that will help a lot. In fact, if we get great production out of our line, our LB’s speed could make them a special group this year. Let’s just hope on Jones. I liked his play and potential on GDay. Overall, speed is what strikes me as the standout feature of our LBs.

CHDawg: Good point. There is definitely a substantial improvement in speed among the linebackers. People forget that Richard Samuel, at 6-2, 243, is one of the fastest players on the team. Heck, he used to return kickoffs. Then you add Jarvis Jones, Alec Ogletree and T.J. Stripling. All those guys were high school sprinters. Take into account a bigger defensive front that’s loaded in the middle and those guys should have more room to operate. Again, hard to imagine dramatic improvement while losing the production UGA did but there is certainly that potential.

Cam Newton needs to thank his lucky stars for Gus Malzahn. Gus Malzahn made Newton the #1 pick with his offense. Wanna know how good Malzahn is? Track the career of Mitch Mustain. As the HC of the High School team Mustain was on he was the # 1 player in the nation. Both went to Arkansas, mustain lead them to 8-0 then replaced by Casey Dick. Malzahn leaves for Tulsa, Mustain leaves for USC. Mustain never steps back on to the field in a meaningful game.
Newton and his combine workout very well could equal Mike Mamula in the ‘95 draft. Go look at how Newton stammered through calling a play when John Gruden asked him to on the combine show.

First off – get off the idea of moving players around from defense to offense like Samuels. He is staying at LB and not going to RB. He will be better off at LB and not moving back to RB again. If we have injuries then you worry about that. But you have other options for RB than Samuel. First of Malcolm and Crowell need to prove that they are not going to get it before you move anyone. 2nd – you evaluate Branden Smith and if he is going to play corner or Nick Marshall. You could use Marshall on both if necessary. Also – we need our existing receivers to step it up – Mitchell, King, Brown, and Bennett. The you have the TE situation to assist with that. If we have receivers that can’t be relied upon to be covered one on one then you can open things up and eliminate people in the box to stop the run. That is going to be the biggest question and what to expect from Boise and Carolina. If we can block and make some plays they will have to back off that. That means we need to be effective and efficient offensively. If our defense is stagnating like they could be then that will only further pressure teams to back off that approach on defense.
If you look back – last year that was what we faced most of the time was 8 guys in the box.

Tampa Dawg…. good insight.
I’m concerned with our unproven front 7. Great potential but unproven. I think RS needs to stay at LB with his speed and size. Vasser was a wreaking ball at the spring game so I’m not so sure it’s a major drop off but I hope we don’t have to find out.
We can’t afford another AJ distraction like last year but it appears the AJ hang over and the cancerous attitudes of single digit numbered players was too much to overcome.
Looking forward to a GREAT year! Go DAWGS!

One thing I’d like to point out about last years tackle production….what percentage of those tackles were made 5-7 yards down field on running plays? How many of those tackles were made by the 2nd or 3rd guy to hit the ball carrier? Last year Lattimore looked like a bowling ball rolling thru would be tacklers. This year I think we might be able to get there faster and bring more wood to bear when we do. To be fair a lot of D-line’s play impacted the linebackers ability to get to the point of attack cleanly that should be plus this year…I hope.

Chip, do me a favor and ask CMR – when you go to him about other RBs he’s considering trying out – if Justin Scott-Wesley will be given a ‘look-see’. The kid’s got the speed, size and, apparently, moves and power to break tackles, to be a running back. Seems to me, if he’s also got the heart, tenacity and ability to hold onto the ball, they’d be crazy not to try him.
As for you people runnin’ down Georgia because they didn’t want to recruit Cameron Newton as a QB – that’s been answered, we were, and continue to, run a pro-style, two-back, offense that puts a premium on the QB’s ability to drop-back and find an open guy…which would have meant changing an entire offensive scheme at the same time you had an eventual #1 NFL pick at the position…plus, the kid was never coming to Georgia as Florida already had the ideal offense in place – by the way, he must have been pretty bad for UF to have let him go, and I’ll always wonder if his, ultimate, success at AU was the reason UMeyer decided to quit Florida, as he never wanted to kick him off the team in the first place – that having Newton as a back-up to Tebow would likely have given UF and UM another NC..
And as for what will ultimately happen at AU, we’ll see. Until I hear Cheesit or their AD say, ‘I swear on my Mother’s grave that we didn’t pay anybody anything to get Cam Newton to come to Auburn’, I won’t believe that they didn’t. All they ever say is, ‘he was eligible according to the NCAA, and there’s ‘no evidence’ that we did anything wrong…oh yeah, and ‘We’re all in.’ To believe otherwise is to believe that Cecil Newton, all of a sudden, had a ‘come to Jesus’ meeting with himself after he either turned down Miss State’s final offer, or was himself turned down by MS cause ‘the money was just too good’, and stopped pimpin’ his boy out to schools – yeah right.

TR has expressed his opinion of UGA and Cam Newton many times, but I cannot get an answer from him about Bama’s recruitment or non-recruitment of Newton. If he answers the questions below, it boxes him in- game, set, match, checkmate. I predict these questions will be ignored in favor of a tirade against UGA.
1. After Cam’s JUCO stint, choose one:
A. Saban was outrecruited by Chizik
B. Saban had his reasons for not recruiting Newton
(If B is correct, don’t give me that stuff about distance. Saban regularly recruits players that are farther off than Westlake, and incidentally Westlake is more than 45 minutes from Athens, not that it matters.)
2. Coming out of JUCO, do you think Saban shared your view of Newton as a great QB, and if he did, why do you think he did not recruit him at Bama?
3. Do you think Saban is a good evaluator of talent?
4. If Saban chooses to start AJ McCarron, do you think it is because Saban thinks he is the best QB on the roster at the present time?
5. If Saban chooses to start McCarron, are you okay with that?
If Tide Roll does not forthrightly answer these questions, would some Bama fan give me an answer as to whether or not Bama did recruit Newton? Last week, one said Smart implied the Tide passed on him due to baggage, this was at a boosters club meeting. Would like confirmation one way or the other.

Do the league a solid and show up for this game. Don’t embarass yourselves and the SEC with another Colorado/UCF preformance……GO SEC!!!

Same level as USCe? What did they do outsdie of win the SEC East in a down year? How did they fair in the SECTG? How did they fair in the Peach Bowl? One good year does not constitute arrival, where one year does not constitute a medioric decline. Please with all this USC bullcrap. We were 6-7 last year and if Ealey doesnt fumble on the 4 yard line the game would have played out toally different. USC has a ton to prove this year. They are looking to prove last year was no fluke. UGA can say the same thing, but UGA is far from being Ole Miss.

Is anyone else noticing a huge evident trend in these recurring articles???
A whole lot of “if and buts were candy & nuts, it will be a wonderful Christmas” to these rundowns of the 2011 UGA football future.
If high school RBs can be the next Herchel, if JUCO DL are the next this or if former safeties magically become Ray Lewis, if all 5 of available OL can play every single snap, then all the UGA homers at the AJC willl be just lovin life.
How did this program which has boasted of endlessly about dominating every recruiting season and cherry picking the nation for every quality football player around suddenly become the UAB of the SEC?

Other questions he won’t answer:
1.) Why won’t you EVER list a white OL as a great prospect?
2.) Why won’t you EVER discuss family preference and other personal circumstances involved with why an OL prospect from Georgia signs with another school?
3.) Why do you only list black OL as Rimington Award nominees and only listed Ben Jones AFTER I prodded you to do so.
You can also rest assured that after McCarron loses a game, tide roll will be all about Sims playing QB and will start spouting how Andrew Zow and Walter Lewis got bad raps during their time at Alabama.

First congrats on keeping things on football instead of gutter garbage. I enjoy the insight that shows up from different teams here. Outsiders perspective. Boise is the toughest game and most important on your schedule. 1. They are VERY good! 2. They have months to prepare. 3. They have another chance on the national stage. It does not matter that ga won 100- 0 5 years ago . Sept. is now. If you win in Atlanta, it will be a good season. USC may be tough but the game is always expected to be tough. The young players will be shocked if they lose to BOISE. Could mean a tailspin against us.
After a USC win you will get back in the saddle. Unfortunately you will not make it to Atlanta twice. You have talent and average coaching but Richt lacks the most important thing. GOOD LUCK. Without that struggles always arise. (see USC) good luck for 11 games.

Lowcountry, your USCe comment is noted and not entirely disagreed upon. The Ole Miss comparison may be a bit hard to swallow but look at the similarities. Both Ole Miss and UGA had losing seasons in 2010 along with Vandy so to eliminate yourselves from the comparisons you need to prove yourselves on the field and quit choking/underachieving. Unlike Vandy and Ole Miss UGA has the talent needed to play winning football. So what’s the problem? Could it be the coaching staff?

One year cannot compare the programs. Coaching at times appears underwhelming, but how many BCS games has UGA appeared in compared to Vandy and Ole Miss? How many bowl appearances has Vandy had since 1981? Ole Miss has not been the same since Billy Brewer was coach!
UGA this decade has proved itself to be a franchise program for College Football. One year, if you wanna say two fine, but this entire decade CMR has stamped this Program as legitimate. I am not one that says we did so well 8 years ago that it is a forgone conclusion that we will again, but I like our history of bouncing back over a Vandy or a Ole Miss.

Also have to agree with some who said Samuel is better at LB. He’s just not in a RB mind set, He wants to hit someone, not make them miss. With the speed UGA has at LB will we be seeing alot more of Blitz. You’d think with the sub parr play last year in our secondary that we should try and make the QB make some bad throws. I don’t buy the Boise only has one game to get up for excuse. We have the same amount of time to prepare for them as they do for us. Bag the whole “finish the drill” motto and implement the “no excuses” motto. We can ruin their season in week one, but we still have USC to play the next week. Despite what most people say about us having more on the line, they have a lot more to lose. Most people expect them to win and us to fire our coach by the end of October.

The Cam Newton question seems to me to be, would UGA have changed their whole offensive scheme for 1 player. I think the same might be true for Alabama. He went to Florida originally because, he fit into their scheme. He was to be the heir apparent to T. Tebow. Had he kept his nose clean, who knows what he might have meant for the gators. He fit into Auburns scheme since they had a new head coach for the most part, and he had not really put his signature on the offense as of yet. He wanted to win so they built a scheme for Cam Newton. It worked, end of story.
as for all of these comments from this Tide roll guy. You folks do realize if you do not give him an audience and ignore him, he will simply go away. Starve a fire and it goes away. You are feeding him and allowing him to get you to respond. He is free to spout anything he wants on here as it is Chip’s column, and he can decide what falls in the region of poor taste. Just ignore him folks. A person who talks to himself usually gets the hint.
Now, I believe if our big uglies jam up the O line for the opponent, our linebackers have the size and speed to make this a really decent front seven for UGA. If you can’t run up the middle, you have to go to the outside right? If our LB’s use their size and speed, and tackle well, we control the run. If you clog up the middle and push that line back or at least force them to double team you, the QB, has a lot less times to read his progressions because he never knows what LB is going to get a clean shot at him. I have watched Garcia for three years and he is a decent QB as long as he is not pressured. Pressure him and he throws picks and makes unwise decisions. Almost any QB who is not especially mobile, doesn’t like to be hounded and will make poor decisions if you turn up the heat. There are not that many Cam Newtons out there. He thought run first and pass second most of the time and was good enough to pull it off.

Thunder Dome!!!!
This Sept. 3 in Atlanta, we Georgians (and Dawg Fans) have the opportunity to make a statement.
This may be the most pivotal game we play in deciding our outcome this season. Even if we were to win out the remainder of our schedule and win the SEC championship (the best you could hope for after a loss in the opener), we would not play in a National Championship if Boise remained undefeated, or anybody else for that matter, thus ending the SEC streak with the title game. Well this just can’t happen. We must win. Not because we think we should because we are the bigger program from the SEC and that should be enough to win. Not because we think we can play in a National Championship if we do. Our toughest games will be still to come. It is not because they think they will destroy us since they beat Va Tech last year right before James Madison did and “this isn’t the same team we beat in 2005”. It is because… THIS IS OUR HOUSE. THIS IS IN OUR STATE, IN OUR CAPITAL. THIS IS OUR COCA~COLA. THAT IS OUR DAMN CHICKEN SANDWICH. Do they even have Chic-fil-a in Boise?
When Boise St comes to the Georgia Dome to face us, we the fans have a responsibility to do our part to help our team. If you have ever been to the Dome you know how loud it can be. It is our job to make the walls crumble from our thunderous roar!!!!!!!!! Anytime the Boise offense is on the field it is our job to make as much noise as you’ve ever made. STAY ON YOUR FEET between plays still SCREAMING with all your might. STOMP THE GROUND and CLAP YOUR HANDS. SHAKE YOU KEYS. Bring those CRYING BABIES that you always bring to restaurants. Take off your belts, fold them in half, hold both ends, move your hands in then pull away making the belt pop. Try it, pretty loud. I don’t care if you wear tap shoes. We might take some heat for it if we all showed up in tap shoes, but that would make a ton of noise. Just sayin…
The point is we help win games too. We help motivate our kids to sell out body and mind for us and we strike fear and confusion into the other team. Though our part is nothing to what the players’ and coaches’ roles are, we must still show up prepared and ready to give our all, just like we expect from the team every Saturday. I don’t care if the score is 100-0, we don’t quit making noise or leave early. I want the TV announcers to show the noise meter at the Dome showing new records. Noise can cause miscommunication with play calling, unheard check-offs or audibles from the QB or sidelines, missed kicks, penalties, and turnovers. It can strike fear into the other team and kill momentum. We don’t need to take our feet off the gas, on the field or in the stands, till the game is over and we get that chicken dinner.
I WANT THAT CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!
Then I want to eat chicken again the next week.
Don’t let me down Dawg Fans.
Don’t let our team down.
We will only become champions with each other. Standing behind one another proudly and united. It’s time to bring the noise. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don’t want to scare you but UGA has be treading close to that 75 number since 2008. This year I think we are back up to about 95, counting the incoming freshmen. @RxDawg – I’m not only saying the coaches are bad, just some of them. By the same token not all of our players are bad, just some of them, but then that means, coaches are bad at evaluating talent or coaching talent. Depth charts should not just be for show. murfdawg I mostly agree with you; we are as thin on the line of scrimmage as we have been in years. I blame this on Urban in his quest to load up the team with speed (which we have plenty of). I expect the star of the 2011 team to be Trey Burton who will be used playing about 6 different positions.

Why would you expect coach turnover to lead to player turnover, just of itself? That sounds right at first, but then to think about it, the guys aren’t leaving just BECAUSE the coach changed. They left because of some factor(s) associated with the the coaching changes. Any idea what reasons they are giving?

WTF – why does something that happened when Jarvis Jones was being recruited by and then playing for USC have anything to do with his eligibility at Georgia?
Van Winkles Rip: and, lest I forget, conference champions from years prior to the SEC dividing into divisions or any other conference champions are in the record books … so they’re REAL and OFFICIAL. The first SEC championship game was played in 1992 at Birmingham’s Legion Field with Alabama beating Florida.
Nuff said.

The SEC championship was always determined on the field. Never a vote. The divisional format did not start the REAL to it. By your logic, the big 10 has never had a champion.

AltamahaDawg,
Each kid has their own reason, but as you know, they develop relationships with the coaches throughout the recruiting process. This is several years in many cases. Then you have discipline issues that a new coach usually cracks down harder on than their predecessor to set a tone. Lastly, a totally different philosophy on offense. At this point, it is what it is and we’ll have to suit up with what we have. The good news is that a ton of underclassmen will get some significant amount of playing time in Muschamp’s first year, so 2012 and 2013 should be much better…….SHOULD BE!

Checked back in and found some good football comments! Noticed several comments about BSU, especially Chip mentioning how strong their D line is…you want to see something interesting: go over to one of the recruiting pages and call up Boise, then look at their rankings and stars for the last few years. Amazing that they can establish a dominant program with a bunch of 2 and 3 stars! Also, BSU’s is significantly smaller. Some of the people think Murray’s too short, but look at Moore–6′ & 186 on the chart I looked at! That kid can play. It is an amazing testament to the coaching and to the kids on BSU that they compete so well against programs with vastly higher rated HS talent! Some of it may be that they have been belittled so much that when they get Georgia or VA Tech on National TV, they view it as a life and death game, while the bigger program doesn’t take it as seriously because they are one big game among many. The Dawgs better get excited, and not get distracted this year. The Broncos know how to bring it. I guess you have to be good playing on that awful blue field!

Chip is providing a lot of interesting info. about UGA football for 2011. The bottom line is UGA will do well and finish the regular season as SEC East champion. A 10-2 record is likely. As a GT fan, I do like to follow UGA and wish them well until the last Sat. in November.

I just couldn’t help myself, as this was way too easy. For the record, I love watching Hines Ward play. In fact, he’s probaly my favorite NFL player because of his “lunch pail” approach to all aspects of the game.

Samuel was always the best back to me. Samuel did have a technique problem and fumbled a couple of times. What back hasn’t fumbled at UGA?. We have a ex WR as a RBs coach, who does not teach any technique. Looks like he is not good at keeping up with his players well being. Nick Sabans team takes care of the ball and plays defense!!!! MR is making alot of money. Why is he still at Uga. Who else is there to be the dawgs coach? Who Knows. MR came from FSU and there were many problems there too

Ugab,
At his spring meetings conference in Destin Fl. CMR said they scheduled Boise State because for the past few years, UGA had lost some respect and he thought it would be a good way to open and hopefully get that respect back.
I don’t think the individual SEC schools control the conference schedule.

@UGab I disagree. Samuel had countless opportunites to make something happen. He’s very, very fast, but no lateral movement and no moves to speak of,not o mention he ran straight up which was why he took some serious shots. Love the player, but RB was not for him.

corey: Last I heard on Devin Bowman was he was at UGA. Kent Turene was the only signee (besides JUCO-bound Chris Mayes, of course) who hadn’t made it to town yet. But I have to be honest, I don’t pay a lot of attention to that mid-summer. This is just from passing conversations. The only time freshman presence is pertinent is when they’re scheduled to report the first week of August. We’ll see who shows up then.

Where are all of those UGA fans trash talking about how great Georgia schools were and then topped it off by calling UGA the Kudzu League? Kudzu = ivy league I guess? I’ve just got to laugh now that even the Daily Show makes jokes about Atlanta schools and cheating. There’s almost as much cheating there as there is on the field when Ben Jones is playing. And getting schooled by me. Something he couldn’t cheat was my education of his ineptness.
Ah, football season is almost here. Trying to figure out how many weeks until UGA fans say “screw this I’m going huntin’.” I say 1. If Boise St scores more than 60 and UGA fails to score more than 14 then the UGA fans will walk. If BSU is under 60 then there will be next week and “let’s when the SEC East!” Until Spurrier puts a beat down on probably scoring more than 30 to UGA’s 10.
It’s going to be very ugly in those first two weeks. It’s too bad it couldn’t come today!

Beast, another factor is that there is always some leaving every year. I always thought that the assumption that the new coach is cracking down on disipline get’s overblown. But I guess thay have less of a relationship with the kids, so less likely to give additional chances. If UF’s case the one that left for problem, probably weren;t long for the team anyway. Kind of like when Saban dismissed the kid selling cocaine in the parking lot, and they all said he was cleaning house. I kind of think the old guy would have too. (I realize there were others less obvious)
Was more interested to discuss if there were player leaving who were recruited “specifically” for the old philosophy and just thought there was no way they can play under this one. I find that one the most intriguing. I suppose if it was a 5′7″ track star RB, who just never thought he would get as many carries now. Has there been any of that sort of thing. I can’t see any linemen worried about “style”, or receivers.

Anybody trashing Atlanta public schools, should take a look at the make up of their team roster. There are quite a few Atlanta and metro products in the SEC. Wasn’t there just a Heisman trophy winner that was originally from Georgia on last years MNC team at Auburn? Thought so, so perhaps one needs to be careful, before inserting ones foot in ones oral cavity.

If they do decide to suspend J. Jones for one or two games, I at least hope they do it soon, so we will not have another A.J. situation, where we wait until the last minute when the God’s of the NCAA decide and make a decision. USC should share and be penalized equally or more so than UGA, since he did it on their watch, but I bet that never happens.
