Defensive line: Massive changes give Bulldogs great expectations in trenches

DEFENSIVE LINE

  • Returning starters: DE DeAngelo Tyson (Sr., 6-2, 290), DE Abry Jones (Jr., 6-3, 297)
  • Others to watch: Sophomore NG Kwame Geathers (6-6, 350) was the most improved defensive player during spring practice. He’ll be joined in the fall by junior college All-American John Jenkins (6-4, 350)  which should dramatically improve the Bulldogs’ interior presence so critical to the success of the 3-4 defense. . . . Sophomore defensive ends Garrison Smith and Derrick Lott and freshman noseguard Mike Thornton are ready to take a step up into the playing rotation.
  • Key losses: Defensive end Demarcus Dobbs started 42 games in his career and his versatility and big-play capability will be missed. Brandon Wood and Kiante Tripp also graduated and junior Jeremy Longo received a medical disqualification.
  • Key fact: This time last year we were asking if the Bulldogs “had a nose” for the new 3-4 defense defensive coordinator Todd Grantham was bringing to Athens. The answer in retrospect was a resounding no. Tyson started every game at the position but, the truth was, it was not not a physical or mental fit for him. It was a perfect fit for Geathers but, for whatever reason, he was slow to master the techniques required until this past spring, when he was the most impressive defensive player in camp. Add Jenkins and Thornton (6-1, 287) to the mix and that gives the Bulldogs an ideal three-player rotation for plugging the middle.
  • Key fact II: Abry Jones was probably under-valued as a defensive end last season, though he certainly earned notice after recording 16 tackles in the regular-season finale against Georgia Tech. He ended the season with 34 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. Meanwhile, Tyson’s move out to end from nose guard is one of the more interesting and potentially beneficial for the Bulldogs this fall. Playing head up over a tackle is a more natural position than nose for this 6-4, 306-pounder from Statesboro. He managed 36 tackles — he also had 16 against the Jackets — and 7 quarterback pressures as it was. Those numbers should increase as he gets more one-on-one matchups. With Georgia’s talent infusion inside, look for Jones and the other players playing this end/tackle position to contribute more big plays.
  • John Jenkins has been dominant in strength and conditioning drills this summer.

JUCO transfer John Jenkins has been dominant in strength and conditioning drills this summer.

Key developments: The word out of Georgia’s off-season strength and conditioning program this summer was that Jenkins showed up in shape, motivated and, in fact, has proven to be the fastest lineman the Bulldogs have on campus. His impact is expected to be substantial. . . . Griffin’s Chris Mayes, the only other D-lineman signed in the 2011 class, was unable to meet freshman eligibility requirements and has enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, Jenkins’ previous school.

  • Key questions: Will Geathers and/or Jenkins prove to be the real deal at nose guard? If so the Bulldogs can expect dramatic improvement on their overall big-play-making capabilities on defense. If not, they will have similar problems as last year.
  • Outlook: Encouraging. At the least this would appear to be a drastically improved area for Georgia. But with so many changes in the overall front seven, the Bulldogs will have to go out and prove it on the football field. And lack of depth could be an issue. They will enter camp with just seven scholarship players for three positions.  But if the injury bug stays away this area is potentially a team strength.
  • Your turn: What say you about Georgia’s defensive line?

Go Dawgs! This group sounds like a bunch of guys that can Hunker Down when needed and dominate up front much of a game. This should help our LB’s be even better. I think the second year of this Defense will be a big improvement for the beast in the east this year.

Nick Saban came to Alabama and put his defense in place. Mark Richt hired Grantham to inject that same defense here in Athens. If there could be a turning point for Richt this could be it. A strong defense can set the tempo for how games are played and turn out. Grammatically at least, UGA may be better on defense. eYe have read that we will be. eYe would like to see it firsthand.

I don’t think it is a stretch to say that NG is the most critical spot on a 3-4, and last year shows that without a dominant player there you will have trouble stopping the run inside. SC will be a totally different game this year, I hope. Our fast LBs should make it tough on opposing QBs, so if we can stop the run, it could be a great year on D. But, the other question is how well the ILBs will plug the run. I just remember how Mt. Cody seemed to make Bama’s D work. Can’t wait this year’s line in action, including Geathers!

We sure couldn’t stop nobody last year and why is it our players beat their chests and dance around celebrating making routine plays on offense and defense? That is what they are supposed to do, make plays. Just because you make a run, catch, or tackle isn’t reason to celebrate. Do the celebrating after the dern game.

I’ve never understood how anyone – even an alumnus – could support and take pride in UGA’s football team. When you look at their history for the past forty years, how can anyone ignore Jan Kemp and the “remedial studies” scam, the Jim Harrick fiasco, the DUIs in the athletic office, the DUIs and other arrests of players, the #1 party school tag (i.e., the most drunk students), the suspensions and outright dismissals, the Fulmer Cup, and on and on?

As disgraceful and humiliating as it is, I don’t see many alums and fans demanding an end to this sordid activity. It sets UGA apart as the kind of school most people abhor, and it’s become an embarrassment to the whole state of Georgia.

Will it never end? Apparently not while Mark Richt is at UGA. Richt is perhaps the biggest hypocrite in the United States. But even with all the cheating and lawlessness that he ignores, he still can’t win the SEC.

So you’re paying him to be BCS champions, but he can’t even win his SEC division. So why do you pay him millions of dollars a year?

Just asking.

I’m hopeful our D-line will be improved sufficiently this year, bigger, stronger, and faster, so that UGA can decrease its opponent’s scoring to an average of around 16 ppg or less.

Doing that will mean we have gotten into and interrupted our opponent’s backfield, given our secondary time to do their defensive job, disrupted our opponent’s scoring opportunity, and kept their offense off the field for a shorter period of time each game.

This is one of the keys to holding an opponent to around 16 ppg. I believe this D-line will be the nucleus of a much improved defense that can help keep UGA in all of our games this year.

Maybe not win them all, but keep us competitive for four quarters and give our offense and special teams a chance to win. I think these players are that good. Only time will tell, but I’m that hopeful. .. Go Dawgs!

Drink up my friends! You will soon see that nothing much has really changed at all except there will be a few different players and that is really the only hope for change we have. Nothing will have changed as to our offensive woes and problems. The defense had it’s lions share of problems last year and will have them again this year because the offenses lack of success will cause them to be on the field continually again and again etc. Nothing has really changed because Richt and his buddies are still around.

I’m hoping the D-line is much improved, we broke the UGA record for the number of games where we scored 30+ points last season..folks you should win games if you score 30 period. I’m thinking the D-line improves that makes the linebackers a greater force for creating sacks, tackles for loss and interceptions etc and if the opposing QB’s don’t have all day to throw the secondary will be vastly improved. We will really need the defense to come screaming out of the gate..the OL will need some real game day experience playing as a unit to be effective. The defense will have to keep us in the game the first two games create some turnovers and give the offense good field position.

Your bitterness is much worse than Richt’s hypocrisy. I assume you are another bitter GT fan, who can’t separate football from life? How many kids from rural GA does GT have? If you only accept rich kids who have been to the best schools, who have two parents that loved and raised them, who are in the top tier in testing, it is easy to look down on average and lower income kids–they have a lot of problems to work out.

You act like it’s shocking evidence of moral decay that college students drink beer and cut up.

It’s not. What’s really going on is the omnipresent and oppressive fascist police state that is Athens, Georgia is constantly rounding up basically harmless college kids and extorting money from them with harassing prosecutions for a vast array of petty offenses, such as dancing, walking in an unsteady manner, or peeing in the bushes, or, Lord have mercy, riding a scooter on a sidewalk. And lots and lots of public drunk.

In my day the cops would have told you to cut it out and sent you home. Now they treat you like you’re an enemy of the state and a revenue opportunity, stick you with a criminal record, and take a few thousand dollars out of your parents’ pockets.

Our defensive line will be solid. As it mentioned in the article, Abry Jones has been an under-valued player. This kid is going to be a great player. If you know football and have watched him in his development, you had to have noticed how fundamentally sound he is. Thanks to the new more aggresive strength program, he has become faaster and stronger. As a defensive linemen your job is not always to make the tackle, but to clear the way for your linebackers. With Jenkins and Geathers in the middle, jones will not see as many double teams as he saw last year. Mark my words, this kid will shine this year. UGA fans have the same attitude of Ron Kovic earlier on in the great movie Born on the 4th of July about America during the Anti-War protests during the Vietnam War

“America, love it or leave it.”

UGA fans during this time as every other dedicated fan of there school should be excited about this time of year. College football is around the corner. To many rivals get there kicks outta calling how UGA fans think we will win it every year, which is laughable, when that is rarely said. Or reminders of how 1980 was sooo long ago. Well, hell we realize that also, lol.

UGA fans, expect that if UGA faulters out of the gate, which is possible, and you come on these blogs and critize you to will hear, “UGA, love it or leave it.”. You will have die hard Kool- Aid drinkers who support blindly. You will have moderate fans who can step back and see a larger picture and understand the state of the program as it is. I for one consider myself this type of fan. Finally you will have your Anti-CMR and CMB who nothing short of a SEC Title should get them fired.

I think we can all agree in our support of how affinity for UGA. It is simply we get to that point in different manors. We still should respect the fact that UGA is a wonderful school, with a proud tradition. Football time in the Fall is almost upon us, and I for one am damn ready for it.

Get a clue, Saban’s way of winning only works for Saban. You can’t copy him. Grantham probably has a good idea what makes Saban’s defense work, but Richt will get in the way.

JB… You made the statement nobody who is unhappy with Richt would dare confront him face to face with their thoughts. eYw merely pointed out that eYe would. In fact, eYe have had the opportunity in Columbus, Ga. to speak with Mark Richt briefly about some of my concerns. He was attentive during our conversation and told me he had heard many of my same concerns voiced often and strongly by numerous UGA fans and supporters. eYe enjoyed the brief visit with Richt but still feel the same as eYe indicated earlier. eYe want to see it coach. By the way, the verbal exchange with Richt was acknowledged with a handshake and his response of appreciation for the professional manner eYe presented it with. Judging from his direct attention by making eye contact, eYe actually felt he might have appreciated someone mentioning what they felt was lacking other than patting him on the back and patronizing him just because he is the head coach of UGA. eYe want to see it.

Zoli I hope that they improve. I think the talent is there and I am willing to chalk the mental breaks down to a new system. They did look much better later in the season, but I keep watching that long pass from Malette over and over again in my mind. If they step up, then I see us holding folks to 17 points or less per game.
And I bet that CTG has #21 from SC pictures all over the locker room on September 10th.

the defensive line has to be better than last year doesn’t it?

That GT game was an embarrassment.

That game was so typical of Justin Houston’s career. Make a great play, forcing the fumble to return for a TD, then pretty much take every other play off the rest of the game.

We had no size up the middle at all and we got gashed by more than one opponent.

Putting players in the positions where they belong is great and wonderful but now they must perform.

The defense is the key to the season. Drop the PPG and we win a lot. Continue last year’s style and Richt is history.

DawginLex, yeah and they need to play for 60 minutes, not 48. But I think Coach T has that problem well in hand.
I quit posting yesterday before I saw the answer to my question, but this year aren’t they going to take points away for unsportsmanlike conduct? Like the diving into the endzone with no one within twenty yards of the player?

Time of possession for UGA last year was 30 minutes less than the opponent. We had the ball longer than the opponent only two games. Either we need a good running game to control the clock be more efficient in passing the ball to various receivers, or scheme to control the ball on offense. On defense we must have more three and punts, more pressure on the qb, more stuffs on the rb, great coverage on the receivers, improvement in overall toughness and a determination to get the ball back to the offense. It is great to have all american punters and kickers but it would be great to have them make extra points and kickoffs consistantly instead of having to settle for fgs and punts. Yes we scored 30 points many times last year but not against the good teams where we did not control the clock consistantly and we never outscored them because of lack of ball control and putting so much pressure on the defense. Kick off returns for tds are sometimes devistating for the defense. Especially after a long time consuming drive for a score and then no rest after the one play on special teams they are back on the field for defense after one play and no rest. Defense has to improve the threes and out and the offense has to control the ball and time on the clock to win consistently against the good teams.

I find it comical that the SC fans are crowing on this blog. Even when UGA was horrible last year, SC couldn’t put them away. You have a QB with serious off field issues, and the HC who is scared to punish him. Oh you did hold him out off season workouts. I am sure he will have served his suspension just in time for the season. I will give Lattimore and Jeffrey their props. But the running lanes are going to be tough. I see a lot of 7-8 in the box. You can’t throw the ball from your back or while your slightly buzzed!

You do state your opinions with facts, some are positive on the Dawgs and some are not! JB, I agree 100% with your comment that “I’m not going to bash the HC/CMR or the Dawgs at all. I’m going to cheer for them”!! That the way it should be starting now! As in spring training for baseball…”Hope springs eternal” for every team in the pre-season! Right now, we Dawgs should be positive, we should be excited, we MUST back our team no matter what was in the past. Everyone can give their opinion and I will fight to the death for all of us to state it. I’ve just decided I’m not going to let some person (who I have no idea if they are a Dawg fan or not. No matter what they say on here) try to ruin my excitement for the Dawgs. We may split the first 2 games. We may win them both or lose both. But, 2 games won’t make a season and I expect win or lose, we have to come ready to play each weekend! It’s the Dawgs year! I will back CMR as long as he is our coach! Go Dawgs and let the season start!

Richt was pleased about the many times GA scored more than 30 points a game. Makes sense that when the offense scores quickly and the defense is back on the field that the defense would falter in the fourth quarter. Just a thought did the offense falter in the fourth quarter due to fatigue and lack of conditioning or was the defense just on the field too long to be effective in the fourth quarter. Don’t fix the wrong cog in the machine.

One of the reasons I like the move to the 3-4 is that a dominate, explosive presence at the nose position has a domino effect that literally takes the pressure off of the rest of the defense. If Geathers and Jenkins are what they’ve been cracked up to be and the Bulldogs can then rotate two and stay fresh at that position, I don’t think you can overestimate what that would mean to the team this year.

Lattimore is the best RB in the SEC and “probabaly” the nation? really? you studied all the RB in the nation did you?

Or did you base that on SC finishing in the bottom half of the league in rushing last year. Or perhaps it was that Lattimore had the lowest ypc average of all the top 10 RB in the SEC last year? He wasn’t the top RB in the SEC last year and that guy is also returning.

But yea, he “probably” goes from 31st to #1 this year. There’s only a bunch of junior and senior ahead of him to leadfrog. I could easily see him going for 1800 yards against the SEC.

Funny article, the homers at the AJC weren’t asking if UGA had a true noseguard last year, they were crowing about having gotten rid of the previous DC. The outlook last season was “encouraging” also.

Only at UGA and the AJC would have NO returning quality experience and reliance on an unproven JC player who has never even gone thru one practice be a sign of “encouraging”.

But not to worry that Lattimore kid ran for two TDs against the real Cody last season against Bama so not likely the mini-me Cody at UGA will have much of an impact.

Grantham has pinned his hopes and future career to John Jenkins. If the D doesn’t improve and we go 7-5, he, along with Richt, may be gone. Thus making Grantham decision to leave the Cowboyds tragic.

Excited to read Jenkins is impressing so far. Cody was the anchor at Bama and Jenkins is faster and just as strong according to his JUCO coach! Also pumped that Kwame turned it on in the spring. Grantham’s D should be legit now that he has the personnel in place. Tyson back to his natural position, Abry is way stronger and more explosive on the other end, and 2 mack trucks who can clog the middle and make it easier for the LBs. Tree and Jarvis will be killers at LB. A little worried about safety depth, but move Commings there if need be and we should be ok. I get a semi when I think about how good this D should be! I doubt Grantham has pinned his hopes on any one player especially a first year guy. I think he believes Jenkins is a good player and a wide strong body, so I am sure he likes that. I would think he is counting on the entire squad being able to walk to the field that very first series of the first game knowing what to do, going full speed, and not looking around at each other as they did last year. It was especially obvious in the backfield. The linemen were probably as lost, but we would not have seen their uncertainty “displayed” as much from their stance. Without changing one other thing, our DBs are going to be better prepared. It seemed to me that was true as the year progressed, getting burned far less.

He has also developed a better DL situation on the whole (as well as more experience), before Jenkins. At the very least, Jenkins adds some depth at a critical position, which is something Grantham never had last year. Hopefully he is more than just: at the very least.

I’m not worried about losing Houton. He was fine, but I think you can just plug in somebody else there, and be just as effective as he was. Gamble and Dent, the worse thing about losing them is: wished they could have been back for year 2. But big picture, I’d trade losing pretty much ANY great player from last year for a lot of average players having more experience in this system any day. I don’t think they were great, I don’t think our other LB are only average. I think we have improved at that spot on the whole.

Coach Richt is in the progress of righting the ship, so to speak, it took a lot to replace his close personal friend Coach Martinez. D-Line will be greatly improved. I’ve said before that the best addition in this “Dream Team” of 2011 was John Jenkins, not Isaiah Crowell. He is a natural NG, which is the most important position in a 3-4 defense. The NG commands how the line runs, and is supposed to command how the offense he’s playing against runs based on his ability to disturb the line. Our inside linebackers (samuel, who played LB in high school) and Alec Ogletree (do we even need to explain why he’s great?) will be behind Jenkins blowing s*** up. Our D will be greatly improved in the second year of the 3-4 (it already WAS improved in the first year under Grantham-see..2009 D stats vs. 2010).

It’ll be a special season. Write it down.

SCBoy…it remains to be seen as to whether or not Lattimore has shaken off that vicious hit from the FSU game. Even if he has…Spurrier will need to be a bit more creative than he had to be in last year’s game in the 2nd half. Granted the same play worked over and over and over agian. That won’t be the case this year.

I think our 2 NT will make an enormouse difference in the way the whole defense performs and I am excited to see it!

Tide Roll- I realize my chances are about zero of getting this first one answered, since I have asked it a number of times. Answer if you will, but a rather nice Bama fan answered last time. He said at a booster club meeting Smart implied Bama backed off Newton due to his baggage.

1. Did it bother you at all that Saban failed to sign Cam Newton, especially since he went to your biggest rival, and a team you have to beat?
2. You mentioned UT likes JuJuan James upside, so did Mark Richt, which is maybe why UGA tried to sign him. What were they supposed to do when he turned them down, offer him $180,000?
3. Name one recruiting service that has Brandon Greene rated higher than John Theus.
4. Here is how to end the “endless migration” of end state OL to the teams UGA competes against. I would like for you, Tide Roll, to lobby the NCAA to increase the annual scholarship limit to 50, then UGA could sign about 25 instate OL, to cover all those 3* sleepers the Dogs keep losing to other schools.

Now, if I can get an answer to question 1, without it turning into a blast at UGA for failing to sign Newton, I will be grateful to you, Tide Roll. In fact, I will even say “Roll Tide.”

Sandman,

The points would be taken away only if the player going in for the score starts taunting the opponent before he is over the goal line. The spot of the foul would be where the official determines the player to have started taunting. If the penalty involves excessive celebration in the end zone after a score, the penalty remains the same as it was in years past. You will not see many if any penalties for taunting on the way to the end zone I would guess. If a player does that, I am sure he will ride the pine for a little while and have team mates and coaches giving him the word real quick.

This has gotten to be some really nasty stuff in a whole lot of different ways. Reminds me of some of the verbage fans spit at each other at the games. Anyway, it is what is. eYe think the overall projection gathered as best one can is that yes, UGA has some question marks in alot of areas. Some folks from other teams have pointed out some areas we should be concerned about. eYe do have hopes that this years team will be ready to play and have the resolve to battle every quarter of every game. If attitudes and preparation haven’t been taken care of then we may well see the same type of play we have been accustomed to for a while. That being said, the talent is supposedly in place,s and c has underwent a facelift, we have some big boys coming on board in some key spots and the coaching staff has no doubt felt heat from several avenues. The schedule appears favorable overall and eYe don’t see inicators that we are necessarily in worst shape compared to other teams in our division. eYe have a continuing belief that by the 4th game we will have a pretty good assessment of what we actually have. By the 7th game we will be just what we are. Optimistic? Yeah. Completely confident? No. Hopeful? Damn right.

If the D-line is not our strength this year, then we will definitely be in serious trouble. There’s too much offensive talent in the SEC to win by offensive out-put alone, as we learned all too well last season. A mediocre offense will win games if the defense excels. Don’t believe the reverse holds equally true.

I don’t think this defensive line will be good. They havn’t been in a logn time. Coahces arn’t sharp. Scheme is flawed. DE’s didn’t do anything last year. NT never played a snap in SEC. That’s right 8 out of the 12 games, win or lose, we put up 30 or more points. That goes to show, that Murray was not the reason we lost our games. DEFENSE is the reason we lost most of our games. Well this year, the defense seems to be better, and if the offense is even as good as last season we at least win 4 more games than last season.

Realist,

It would appear your handle does not fit your beliefs. The bleacher report was a report based on an odds makers picks for the football season. These same odds makers that predicted in the last election that McCain would be our president. They were wrong there also. Odds makers
make money by establishing a favorable betting line for them. It is really quite simple. Get enough people to bet against UGA, and when UGA wins, guess who profits. Not the better for sure. An odds maker establishes his line to favor him and his pick is based very little on actual conditions or facts. He is not predicting the future as much as he is putting out a trend and hoping people buy it. Then those people take this trend he has established and bet on it. Then when it goes the other way, he and his establishment keep the bucks from the wrong bets.
I would tend to read more articles based on knowledgeable people in the sports world, not in a Vegas betting operation. That would be realism.

If you don’t know what the term means, “troll” refers to an online personality that uses his/her anonymity to “bait” users or turn valid discussions into full-blown arguments.

After getting knocked into the middle of 2013 in your bowl game he may not be the same as before, maybe he will but you don’t know that yet. Jefferey is the best receiver in the conference, your qb is the biggest nutcase in the conference as well. Of course he won’t miss any playing time but who knows if he will even bother to show up for practices. SC will have a good consistent defense, but with Garcia at qb, who knows how effective it will be. Lattimore will get some yards, but I don’t think he breaks 100 this year, we are much better alone the front 7 than last year.

DAWG Fan,

My understanding is the big houses live on how they get the bettor to lay his money down. If he can persuade a bettor that, a team will win, and they bet that way, then they are basically betting with the house. But, since he will also bet, he is going to take the odds long favorite, which he himself created and bet against it. When he wins, he wins big. Of course the house wins big as well, and I guess that is what it is all about in the end.
A point I was trying to make also, is that this odds maker is trying to establish odds based on trends or history. He is not going to give very much consideration to the present unless he can somehow parlay that to his advantage. I would much rather form my opinion of a teams success or lack of it for the season, based on reports from good solid sports minded people than on an odds maker who, if he could establish odds on his wifes death date, would do so. That’s just me though. I am sure there are a lot of gamblers out there to disagree, LOL.

Harmon, Benedict, Ealey, Gray…I could be missing a few. I watched the last few minutes of the CSS replay of the 04 Dawgs and Gators, and we had two true freshman sharing the playing time. Ware got over 100 yds, I think. Brown did fine, too. It can be done with young guys, but we would miss the depth and experience, if true. As I said the other day, though, I think the RB story for 11 is Malcome. Crowell could be great; we will see how he makes the jump.

As CHDawg posted early this morning, the NT is the critical player on the DL in a 3-4. The DE responsibilities are primarily to occupy the OTs and let the linebackers make the plays. The NT has to take on C-G double teams and still plug up his gap when the RB runs inside. The prototypical NT has great size, strength and technique. Probably the guy who defined the position was Ted Washington, who played in the early ’90s through late 2000s

Last time that happened the 1s were talking about Knowshon Moreno…he did pretty well as a “freshman.” Also, we have one of the highest ranked recruits coming in, and Harton outran the whole pack in the spring. (Malcome was injured along with Ealey for much of the time). Like I said, we beat the Gators and had a fantastic ‘04 with two true Freshmen RBs–Ware and Brown, so we will be fine hopefully.

I’m crossing my fingers, as Grantham’s D will not get it done if this D-Line doesn’t control the line much better this year. Concerning the C. King rumor,

The guy that reported said, he heard it from reliable sources, will not state his source on the UGA campus he heard it from. His name is Bryan Fischer, and it appears he is some kind of student writer for the DAWG Post. Sb Nation’s T Kyle King, said as of now, it is just a rumor but he will not be able to report the full story and it’s origin until Sunday. It appears it may have been a comment made from a Facebook comment a while back from Caleb King, and then somebody transferred it over to the twitter social network and it got a life of it’s own.
I personally feel that if he were not eligible, that it would have been known long before now, say, like at the end of the academic year, but with summer school and all for athletes, who knows.
These things take on a life of their own on these social network pages, so until it is formally announced by the administration at UGA, I will place about as much trust in it, as I do our current President.

Rats,

It is now official that C. King blew it again. I think it is time for CMR to just close the book on him, and dismiss him from the team.
I hope he realizes that his future just went out the window as far as the NFL goes. This guy has had more chances than Garcia, so it is time for him to move on. He can’t meet academic standards to even stay eligible for an athletic scholarship, and I think it is mainly the fact that he is lazy. Too bad, because I think he could have done well this year. Just by opinion as to the reason he let UGA and his team mates down once again, but since this is a recurring thing with him, I don’t see any reason for him to occupy a scholarship on this team. This does put a lot of pressure on the other RB’s or sure.

Here’s hoping that the RB’s, though low in experience, are fast in the learning curve. Someone is now going to have to step up to the plate and swing for the fences. I hope UGA has that guy in the backfield. Of course, we can look at it as giving someone a wonderful opportunity to step up. I hope that is the way UGA team members approach this.

dapperdanman

Thunder Dome!!!!

This Sept. 3 in Atlanta, we Georgians (and Dawg Fans) have the opportunity to make a statement.

This may be the most pivotal game we play in deciding our outcome this season. Even if we were to win out the remainder of our schedule and win the SEC championship (the best you could hope for after a loss in the opener), we would not play in a National Championship if Boise remained undefeated, or anybody else for that matter, thus ending the SEC streak with the title game. Well this just can’t happen. We must win. Not because we think we should because we are the bigger program from the SEC and that should be enough to win. Not because we think we can play in a National Championship if we do. Our toughest games will be still to come. It is not because they think they will destroy us since they beat Va Tech last year right before James Madison did and “this isn’t the same team we beat in 2005”. It is because… THIS IS OUR HOUSE. THIS IS IN OUR STATE, IN OUR CAPITAL. THIS IS OUR COCA~COLA. THAT IS OUR DAMN CHICKEN SANDWICH. Do they even have Chic-fil-a in Boise?

When Boise St comes to the Georgia Dome to face us, we the fans have a responsibility to do our part to help our team. If you have ever been to the Dome you know how loud it can be. It is our job to make the walls crumble from our thunderous roar!!!!!!!!! Anytime the Boise offense is on the field it is our job to make as much noise as you’ve ever made. STAY ON YOUR FEET between plays still SCREAMING with all your might. STOMP THE GROUND and CLAP YOUR HANDS. SHAKE YOU KEYS. Bring those CRYING BABIES that you always bring to restaurants. Take off your belts, fold them in half, hold both ends, move your hands in then pull away making the belt pop. Try it, pretty loud. I don’t care if you wear tap shoes. We might take some heat for it if we all showed up in tap shoes, but that would make a ton of noise. Just sayin…

The point is we help win games too. We help motivate our kids to sell out body and mind for us and we strike fear and confusion into the other team. Though our part is nothing to what the players’ and coaches’ roles are, we must still show up prepared and ready to give our all, just like we expect from the team every Saturday. I don’t care if the score is 100-0, we don’t quit making noise or leave early. I want the TV announcers to show the noise meter at the Dome showing new records. Noise can cause miscommunication with play calling, unheard check-offs or audibles from the QB or sidelines, missed kicks, penalties, and turnovers. It can strike fear into the other team and kill momentum. We don’t need to take our feet off the gas, on the field or in the stands, till the game is over and we get that chicken dinner.

I WANT THAT CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!

Then I want to eat chicken again the next week.

Don’t let me down Dawg Fans.

Don’t let our team down.

We will only become champions with each other. Standing behind one another proudly and united. It’s time to bring the noise. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

dapperdanman….are you kidding me, even mentioning a BCS championship this year? we lost our top 4 backfield players ( 2 best RB’s and 2 best FB’s). we lost our top 2 WR’s. Our OL won’t have much depth (though the bigger question with the OL is how the new line coach will do).

I do believe the defense will be MUCH improved, and we still have exceptional special tems.

I would love nothing more than to go 2-0 to start the season, given the teams we play. But even if we pull that off, an undefeated season is beyond fairy tale thinking.

Please get a bit real, people. If we have a 10 win regular season, I’ll be ecstatic….can’t wait ’till 9/3. I’ll always nbe a fan, regardless of the W-L record. GO DAWGS!
