Running backs: Competition between Caleb King, Isaiah Crowell should translate into success
12:43 pm July 6, 2011, by Chip Towers
UPDATE: CALEB KING LOST HIS ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY ON JULY 8, 2011
Fourth in a series breaking down Georgia’s 2011 football team by position groups. . . .

Georgia tailback Caleb King, here breaking loose for a 27-yard gain against Georgia Tech last season, brings knowledge and experience to the table. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
THE RUNNING BACKS
- Returning starters: TB Caleb King (Sr., 5-11, 224)
- Others to watch: Isaiah Crowell (5-11, 210) is the most anticipated freshman running back Georgia has had since fellow Columbus resident Jasper Sanks showed up in Athens in the late 1990s. Crowell will be in an all-out competition with King for playing time, but Carlton Thomas, Ken “Boo” Malcome and sophomore walk-on Brandon Harton will be looking to get into the mix. . . . Meanwhile, the Bulldogs will be breaking in a new starter at fullback for the first time in four seasons in converted tight end Bruce Figgins or sophomore Zander Ogletree.
- Key losses: Georgia lost its leading rusher from 2010 with the abrupt departure of junior Washaun Ealey after spring practice. Ealey and coach Mark Richt “mutually agreed” they’d each be better off if Ealey transferred. Ealey, who started seven games — King started five — and rushed for 811 yards and 11 TDs with the Bulldogs last season, ended up at Jacksonville State, a Football Championship Subdivision school for whom he’ll be immediately eligible to play. . . . Georgia lost a ton of experience at fullback with the graduations of three-year starter Shaun Chapas and backup Fred Munzenmaier.
-

It's Isaiah Crowell's breakaway ability that had recruiters salivating. Among his long-distance scampers was a 90-yard TD run against eventual state champion Buford.
Key fact: For all the fan criticism and off-field disciplinary issues, King has actually been a fairly solid SEC back. He has averaged 5.0 yards per carry in his career with that average creeping up in each of his three seasons to 5.4 last year. He has also mastered the playbook and the critical criteria of Georgia backs to be able to effectively pass block, particularly in blitzing situations. The only area where he remains unproven is as a consistent “home run” threat.
- Key questions: Will this be Crowell’s year or King’s year? Everybody wants to discover the next big thing, and there is certainly evidence that Crowell could be that for the Bulldogs in 2011. Crowell had an incredible 11.7 yards per carry average at Carver (1,721 yards, 147 carries, 18 TDs), including multiple TDs runs of 50 or more yards. So he would appear to bring big-play capability to the table. But, early on at least, as Georgia faces a pair of top 10 opponents in Boise State and South Carolina in the season’s opening weeks, King is the one who should know every assignment and will need to fill the role of “Mr. Dependable.”
- Recent developments: Figgins’ move from tight end to fullback can’t be over-emphasized. For the first time in Richt’s 11-year tenure the Bulldogs are coming into the season without a proven commodity at fullback. Ogletree was recruited to play the position and projects as a capable every-down player eventually. But the 6-4, 265-pound Figgins’ willingness to move from a position at which he once was a starter into the backfield gives Georgia a legitimate jumbo presence with blocking and pass-catching skills. Walk-on Dustin Royston (5-11, 242) will be a factor as well.
- Outlook: Pretty good. Losing Ealey has to hurt from a production standpoint but his absence also eliminates a negative element and clears the way for hearty competition between multiple and varied talents. Should be an entertaining horse race all season.
- Your turn: What say you about the running backs?

I am thinking Caleb will come out on fire with enough motivation to get it done. I would hate being a linebacker or a DB with Figgins bulldozing a hole. I think we will see our fair share of Boo knocking people out. Our running attack will open it up for Murray to light people up!

I too think King will really make his mark this year. Baring injury of course. This Dawg fan is not expecting Crowell to come in and be our savior. But I do expect him to make a few plays.

Caleb will be good – I’m not worried. I really think Georgia coaches should re-think the way the substitute @ the tailback position. Maybe give a guy a series or two, instead of shuffling them in and out the way they do – It keeps them (whoever is back there) from getting in any kind of rythm.

Lest some of you forget, Caleb King as a recruit was just as highly regarded as I. Crowell. That could be viewed as a good or bad thing so take it as you will.

I believe losing Ealey is the best thing that could have happened to King. This is his year, he knows it, and if he is to play pro football, he needs it. Good luck to the kid. He could be our feel good story of the year.

I heard LT talk about using 3 or 4 carries to figure out who is blocking well on a particular day, or which lineman is getting beat or winning – These backs are never afforded that opportunity. They get a carry or 2 and take a seat – It doesn’t seem to work.

The few plays I saw Figgins in the bowl game, he seemed to know exactly who he was assigned to, and promply leveled them.
On King, I didn’t see any hype in the article, just toned down realistic expectations. Now Crowell was hyped.

UGA has the worst RB Coach in the SEC. The untimely fumbles last year vs. Colorado, Miss St, and South Caro cost 3 games. UGA was also 10th in the SEC in rushing yards per game, and only eeked out a 100 yards rushing per game against teams with winning records. You need to be double that to win the SEC.
Add the thin as wafer O-Line and you have a recipe for disaster, as no RB on the team scored more than 2 td’s for UGA last year.

We haven’t had a feature back since Musa. Even Knowshon was in and out of the game and wasn’t exactly a pounder.
Give me a Verron Haynes type like against Tech in Richt’s first year.
If King has his head on straight and is ready to quit the crap, he can be a good serviceable back. Crowell can be his backup and Malcome can provide depth.
Forget about Carlton Thomas as he is undersized and fumbles a lot.
Richt needs to take back the playcalling(which he won’t do) and let Bobo concentrate on Murray’s development(which Bobo is really good at).

I want to be fair to all, UGA came hard after BOO and TJ when they were both a SWD/ now I feel it’s time to get our own 3 headed monster in the backfield. No 1 every complains about the back field being crowded unless we are losing…. Let King start, Boo back up/and (slowly) bring Mr. Crowell up to speed/ if we do it this way we still can dapp in a DASH of Carlton also/everybody gets the rock/we keep injuries to miniumum and we Scare the He$k out of every1 from the CHICKENS to Swamp”meat” to buzzzzzzin bugs of North Ave.

Richt’s 2 best years, 2002 & 2007, Rixcht has a RB gert 200+ carries and 1000+ yards. Richt’s only 2 wins vs. Fla he got a 100 yard rushing effort from an RB. Richt’s record is 33-4 when he has a 100 yard rsher, but rarely happens as Richt rotates in lousy unproductive backs or gives 7-8 carries a game to Murray, who averages under 2 yards per carry.

Ealey didn’t have a negative effect on the team.
Richt never lost a game when he gave Ealey 20 carries or when Ealey got 100 yards rushing in a game.
Ealey was the ONLY playmaker on the team that could CARRY the team.

CHIP… there is no doubt the running backs should be better. And I realize you are doing position-by-position analysis. But the success of this position is directly related to the ability for the OL to stay healthy. How in the world, with eight players, can we really expect the OL to do what needs to be done for Crowell to be successful? Dallas Lee and Austin Long couldn’t even participate in spring. Plus, Bean Anderson has been a waste of flesh so far at UGA. And Chris Burnette hasn’t even played before. So we can get all excited about the running backs, but if this OL sucks, the running game will be non-existent. What a shame that when the Bulldogs need a healthy OL to protect a potential star, the World Vision ambassador is too damn busy elsewhere to make sure his OL is not such a big question mark.

Hey Dallas, Ealey did not have an effect on the team? The fumbles in key situations near the goal line were not an effect. The crummy attitude about practices was not an effect? This is no doubt that he could have become a big-time back if he had kept his head on straight and learned to hold onto the ball.

Trust me when I tell you that Crowell will be the real deal. I really dont want him starting from day 1 as he needs to learn and master all of the protections and blocking assignments before he is handed the reigns but this guy can flat out play! The King / Crowell combo will be much better than the Ealy King combo.
King is hungry to prove that he is a good RB and Crowell is going to be giving is all to win the job. They will make each other better.

Chip:
Ealey will be missed, but if 3 backs can produce 50-60 yards per game each, we should be fine. Richt can use Crowell at this point, but he can’t rely on him. Same with King…too much inconsistancy though. So we need these guys to go out there for 8-10 plays and have some big runs. If we can do that, defense and passing will win 10 games for us.

Ealey had 11 TD’s but 5 of them were against Kentucky and all of them were short yardage runs that any of the fullbacks or running backs could have made.
That cuts him down to 6.
I guarantee you that Caleb king will get more than 6 TD’s ths year as the starter. Plus he won’t be the team cancers that Ealey,Mett,Gray and Houston were.

Although I would love to see king come out and have a big season, I just can’t see it happening. I haven’t seen him do it since he’s been at UGA, and I can’t see how this year will be any different. As far as the lack of experience with the departure of the fullbacks, I don’t see that as necessarily a bad thing. UGA fullbacks in the past have been able to get the offense that critical one yard when they needed, chapas and munz never proved to have that ability and maybe figgins or ogletree will. Hopefully Crowell will step up as a homerun threat and malcome will step up and be the pounder.

King could prove to have a decent season and put up some decent numbers if he has indeed straightened things out in his personal life. 1) Returning QB, best performer at Elite 11, has a year under his belt. Richt’s record with returning QBs is excellent
2) Todd Grantham’s second year to install defense. Add Jarvis Jones and Big John, another year for all the others to get more acclimated
3) Excellent kicker and punter and punt returner
4) Schedule is very favorable

JayD, good point, but I think you might be overstating that rotation a bit. Obviously this is a platoon type situation, but It wasnt every 2 plays. I think if you go look at the details from games, you will see it was much more by a series or two. There were also quite a few game that either King or Ealey was not (available)in the game, and the other guy got the majority of the carries, being subeds for very sparingly. I don;t think we ever really proved the groove theory in those cases.
I am confident that if they had a consistant runner, he would be getting the bulk of the work. That’s certainly been true in the past.
I just don’t see where King/Ealey ever proved that for any period of time.
WE are going to have King in the game a lot, and Crowell sitting over on the bench. I’m guessing we fans are going to be all in favor of liberal substitutions in this case.

Thunder Dome!!!!
This Sept. 3 in Atlanta, we Georgians (and Dawg Fans) have the opportunity to make a statement.
This may be the most pivotal game we play in deciding our outcome this season. Even if we were to win out the remainder of our schedule and win the SEC championship (the best you could hope for after a loss in the opener), we would not play in a National Championship if Boise remained undefeated, or anybody else for that matter, thus ending the SEC streak with the title game. Well this just can’t happen. We must win. Not because we think we should because we are the bigger program from the SEC and that should be enough to win. Not because we think we can play in a National Championship if we do. Our toughest games will be still to come. It is not because they think they will destroy us since they beat Va Tech last year right before James Madison did and “this isn’t the same team we beat in 2005”. It is because… THIS IS OUR HOUSE. THIS IS IN OUR STATE, IN OUR CAPITAL. THIS IS OUR COCA~COLA. THAT IS OUR DAMN CHICKEN SANDWICH. Do they even have Chic-fil-a in Boise?
When Boise St comes to the Georgia Dome to face us, we the fans have a responsibility to do our part to help our team. If you have ever been to the Dome you know how loud it can be. It is our job to make the walls crumble from our thunderous roar!!!!!!!!! Anytime the Boise offense is on the field it is our job to make as much noise as you’ve ever made. STAY ON YOUR FEET between plays still SCREAMING with all your might. STOMP THE GROUND and CLAP YOUR HANDS. SHAKE YOU KEYS. Bring those CRYING BABIES that you always bring to restaurants. Take off your belts, fold them in half, hold both ends, move your hands in then pull away making the belt pop. Try it, pretty loud. I don’t care if you wear tap shoes. We might take some heat for it if we all showed up in tap shoes, but that would make a ton of noise. Just sayin…
The point is we help win games too. We help motivate our kids to sell out body and mind for us and we strike fear and confusion into the other team. Though our part is nothing to what the players’ and coaches’ roles are, we must still show up prepared and ready to give our all, just like we expect from the team every Saturday. I don’t care if the score is 100-0, we don’t quit making noise or leave early. I want the TV announcers to show the noise meter at the Dome showing new records. Noise can cause miscommunication with play calling, unheard check-offs or audibles from the QB or sidelines, missed kicks, penalties, and turnovers. It can strike fear into the other team and kill momentum. We don’t need to take our feet off the gas, on the field or in the stands, till the game is over and we get that chicken dinner.
I WANT THAT CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!
Then I want to eat chicken again the next week.
Don’t let me down Dawg Fans.
Don’t let our team down.
We will only become champions with each other. Standing behind one another proudly and united.
It’s time to bring the noise. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Benedict-Guy is recovering from major injury. Word from several sites is that he and Joe T had a run-in regarding certain types of lifts. Joe t refused to budge and Benedict got mad. The topper was when he and his dad went and met with Muschamp to discuss transferring BEFORE he aanounced he was leaving.
I’m not “UGA Insider” but i get enough information from people in and around the program that lead me to believe this is right.

Knowshon Moreno didnt have a talented O-Line. He got the job done with vision, patience and extra effort on every play. Go back and watch the tape and see how many times Moreno got the extra three, four and five yards play-after-play with his spin move and extra effort. You need a back that wants it and will not go down to show string and arm tackles. The O-Line isnt good enough to open up gaping holes that CMR himself could run through thus the back has to make it happen. I just hope that Caleb runs like he did in high school while trying to get a big time D1 offer. He was highly motivated his junior and senior seasons at Parkview and GAC. Now, he is in the same boat with the NFL looking down on his talent and ability. Kind of like a contract renewal year for the pros….Gotta get it done or he is out. I also think that Ken Malcome will surprise a lot of people this year. I watched him in several HS games and he is a punishing runner that loves to lower his head and crack linebackers. I truely believe that it will be a 1-2-3-4 combo of King, Malcome, Thomas and Crowell in the first game against Boise State in the dome. I feel that CMR will run all of them to see who wants to play and the best back from that game will be the primary back against USC when it matters. Good to know we have four backs for depth coverage. Also, I watched Ealey in two HS games and he was a man among boys in those games playing both HB and SS bothways. I want to see Crowell against USC or Tennessee before I will call him a savior or feature back. I understand that he dominated in HS, however a lot of those schools didnt produce D1 talent either. I thought Ealey was a sure deal for us and I was proven wrong. I hope Crowell is the real deal and becomes a feature back, but I am not eating crow again. Go Dawgs!

Jasper finshed 2nd in the SEC in Rushing in 1999, Can Caleb King, Ealey,C.Thomas,Tyson Browning, Dontavious Jackson, say the same……NO……so if Crowell can do what Jasper did on the Field, or better…thats fine….thats better than most UGA RB of the past. That was a good point about Richt’s record with returning QB. 5 seasons with returning QB, wins = 13, 11, 10, 11, 10. 5 seasons with new starting QB, wins = 8, 10, 9, 8, 6 with the 10 win season being Shockley who clearly had the most playing time of any of the other new starting QBs. Doesn’t mean we will have 10 or more this year but still interested statistics.

JB … What was Rivals reasoning for having GT at #65, and the 14-yr Bowl run in jeopardy?
What did Rivals have them ranked before PJ’s 1st season (when NO player on the team had any game experience running his O)? And they finished 9-4 that season.
Last season for GT was a good example of what can happen when you factor in TOs and injuries. GT was darn near the WORST team in Div 1 in TOs lost last season with 27 (20 Fum, 7 int). Now add Nesbitt’s injury to that, and BAM, 6-7 is easily accomplished. Change the 4 TOs vs both UGA and Air Force to 1 or none, and GT wins both of those, and goes 8-5.
Here’s a fact for you … if GT has no major injuries, and cuts their TOs a bunch in 2011 they will finish the season ranked further from #65 than your Dawgs do.

as much as everyone wants to question King and his production, it’s pretty hard to complain about a 5.0 ypc avg. IF he gets on the field, then all should work itself out. his failure to actually play the bulk of the season was his biggest negative……not his actual carries.
people also forget that he played several games in ‘09 w/ a broken jaw. the kid is standing in his own way. if he figures things out, he could be the surprise player of the SEC.

All of our RBs have the potential…it’s really up to how quickly our OL jells. I would love to see Justin S-W line up in the backfield similar to Percy Harvin. He’s got the size (220) and speed (fastest guy on our team) to shake up the defense and cause some excitement.

Agreed Ricker. Both King and Ealey had problems last year with suspensions, injuries, and fumbles. King is no Knowshon, but he’s a good blocker and runner. Hopefully, he realizes this is his year to impress, if he wants any chance at the next level.

Without offensive line stability, the running game is not going to flourish in 2011. Georgia has enough talent in the starting group but they are one or two injuries away from being devastated. Not good when you are facing talented front 7s in South Carolina, Mississippi State, Tennessee and Florida.
Also, Murray was sacked 24 times in 2010. I expect that number to increase as freshman running backs are not leaned upon to pass protect in major college football right out of the gate.

A little problem in this sunshine pumping….Ealey was not just the leading rusher for last season but the year before also.
So losing the only back who showed any ability over the past two seasons is going to propel UGA to greater heights?
Stop posting about unicorns and lollipops, there is a reason why King never has showcased his “talent” over the so-called “cancer”, Washaun Ealey. He does not have the ability.
And to this day, the homers at the AJC have not addressed why Crowell missed significant playing time this past season against high school defenses? Injury prone? Then he showed up at workouts completely out of shape? No wonder the UGA fans are so delusional with “reporters” like this.

I believe King will play a lot in his senior year and be productive. That said, no back or any other player should be given the job until they prove they are better than their competition.
In 2009, King was starting to show us production until he broke his jaw (actually, an LSU player broke it for him). He needs to come and and show productivity with the ball after contact, and his ability to contribute without the ball (blocking and running routes). Both are critical. He also needs to stay healthy (conditioning and luck) and out of trouble. This goes for all of our backs. If one or two separate themselves, it will be a good year. If not, Richt will need to continue to do running back by committee.
I am also tired of people saying the key to success is handing any back the ball 20 times. I think people are confusing cause and effect. A team with a lead needs to be able to hand it to a back and let the running game grind up yards and the clock. A team that’s behind needs to score and preserve the clock by throwing the ball. So, winning teams will run late in the game and pad their running stat. Losing teams will pass late in the game and running stats will suffer.

Just watched the Keith Marshall highlights from his junior season. Go watch it and compare it to Crowell’s highlights. I think you will agree that with the following assesment:
- Crowell has better vision
- Crowell has better cut-back ability
- Crowell is more elusive
- Crowell has better breakaway speed
- Crowell has better change of direction
- Marshall takes more hits and seems to be more durable
- Marshall has a very good side step move
- Marshall has caught more balls from the slot position
I also pulled-up Caleb King’s highlights and Knowshon Moreno’s highlights. Keith Marshall reminds me more of Caleb King and Isaiah Crowell reminds me more of Knowshon Moreno.

The correct assessment of our OL is this:
Starters are good and experienced at center and guard.
Starters at other positions have some experience and appear to be capable.
The depth positions have zero experience but have the dreaded p word-potential
After that, there are true freshmen who hopefully will NOT have to play in 2011.
The concern is no depth.
Regarding Richt. He deserves another chance. He has won 2 SEC titles and played for a 3rd. Clearly, the program needs a shot in the arm with some early success in 2011 or the buzzards will start circling.
Despite frustrating us all at times, Bobo is NOT the problem. We are running the same stuff we have run for the past 10 years.
The difference is the dropoff in defense, especially in PPG allowed.
Fix the defense by dropping the PPG allowed from 22 to 14 or 15 and NO ONE will complain about bobo because we will be winning.

Rotating in 3 or 4 backs hasn’t really ever worked under Richt.
Best 2 seasons (so long ago) were 02 & 07.
Musa Smith ran for over 1250 in 02, and Moreno ran for over 1300 in 07.
Going with the #1 back worked, the competition thing hasn’t ever worked.
Lattimore did ok with South Carolina last year as the premiere back, lack of competition didn’t seem to hurt his production, the biggest season since Spurrier came to South Carolina.
Richt’s under some deluded thought that rotating his #1 rb, with 3 or 4 terrible rb’s, helps the rushign game.
He’s wrong.

Chip,
Any chance Richt will apply his “competition makes you better” theory to QB this season? I’d like to see the QB’s rotated until one of them beats a team with a winning record. Split the reps 3 ways: Murray, Mason and Lemay, and may the best man win?

My thoughts: If you look at King’s HS highlights he is unbelievable. His gift is his elusiveness at 95% of full speed–freakish really. The problem, I think, is that UGA has packed the weight on King since arriving, and that the SEC is a lot faster than HS. Putting weight on a back is normally a good thing, but it has slowed him down and neutralized his great God-given ability, imho. It does make him better between the tackles and blocking. I think they need to take off every bit of fat and maybe lighten him up a bit more–the key is getting him back to SEC-fast. His gift will take off at that point. You don’t have to coach it at all. Malcome is the real deal. I expect him, if he gets healthy, to be the story of ‘11. He looks like he has made the jump and is ready to romp. C. Thomas reminds me a little bit of Thomas Brown–we’ll see if he continues to improve. He will contribute. Harton and Crowell are unknowns–both could contribute. The hyping of Crowell sets up a lot of expectations that could cause problems for him. I hope he understands it may take him more than two weeks of summer practice to get as good as he can at UGA. He needs to hang in there and not believe the hype–it may take a year or two, but he clearly has a lot of potential. FB should be interesting. Figgins can catch it, I suspect he can take out an LB 1V1. I agree with importance of the O line! They are really the key to our running game, and the other point is that it doesn’t matter how well you can run if you can’t hold on to the grocery sack! I think we are much better at RB this year! We’ll see about FB. Go Dawgs!

Ealy will not be missed! In his own words; he was coming back to UGA only to improve his draft status. Lest you all have forgotten; attitudes like that never wins games but sure as hell can lose you a bunch! Although loaded, look for Jacksonville State to have a dissapointing year. Any guesses why?

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.
Caleb Queen is a prime example of the punks who Mark Richt recruits.

Crowell will posh him though and may not start but should get alot of PT none the less. What I like more is this will be year 2 of the 3-4 D. What I want to see is get back to 2 a days to toughen up on the field mentalities along with the new conditioning attitudes now in place . We have to play all 4 quarters not 3 and 1/2 . Look for D numbers to get even better as people know more about where they have to be on every play . Last season you could see guys out of place at times .

It would appear that Caleb King has the two greatest incentives he needs to be successful this year. First, it is his last chance to impress the scouts at the pro. level and second, that could mean money. He hasn’t had the best of times due to his injuries and academics, but he has met the academic standards as of now and he appears to be injury free. He does average five yards when healthy, so he can get the job done, when he wants to. He will need to step up to the plate because, let’s face it, the experience level behind him is very low.
Crowell has all of the physical tools you could want in a RB. He has speed, good moves, good vision down field and he plays tough enough. He probably needs to get rid of his showboat stuff a little, but I am sure the defenses he faces will take care of that for him. He will have to learn how to be a big time RB at this level and that will not happen over night. Depending on how he responds to the training and learns how to pass block, will determine when he hits the field for a lot more snaps than he should see when the season starts.
Our first team Ol, can do the job, but we are thin in backups. Someone of the reserves at the guard and tackle position will have to be ready to go, to give them some rest and God forbid, injury, so that is a concern.

UGA will never have a succesful offense as long as Bobo is OC. UGA has finished ranked 7th in the SEC in offense every year he has been OC except 2008(by the way anyone could have called the 2008 offense and been succesful Stafford, Moreno, Green… enough said) Bobo is an idiot. His play calling proves that. Just look at last year anyone who watched our offense could easily predict what play was going to be called, he has no diversity to his play callling. Someone mentioned before about running C. Thomas up the middle. I think that says it all. It doesn’t take a genious to know that Thomas should not be run up the middle. Yet everytime he was in this is what happened.
If UGA wants to have a great offense get rid of Bobo or put togethor another 2008 team which aint happening this year.

I’ve heard this hype on IC all year. Heard it on King too. On Sanks. Ealy could have been the best, and Nixion could have been the best president ever as well. Attitude means everything. Discipline. I think King won’t be great this year, but more dependable. Crowell will be? yep ? we don’t know yet. I love Boo! I don’t see every practice, so I don’t know what issues he might have. I see alot of tallent and reason to smile, but also alot of unproven backs. all this said…….
No running game unless the OL can play up to average. So many questions about the OL, starters, depth..etc. If the OL can block and make some holes then we will see some big runs. I hope Coach Friend will move players and look for weakness on the D and run to the weak side, and most I hope Friend and Bobo can work together better than Serales and Bobo did, a maine reason the running game has sucked the past 2 seasons. I think I’m the only one on these blogs who uses competence to make sense..
Crowell is only a freshman, we can’t really expect too much of him but we can hope that touches he gets will result in big gains..even Knowshon was a redshirt freshman when he first started (a year of S&C and knowing the playbook helped that).
King will be one of the leaders on this team. He is a senior and he IS only averaging 5.4 yards per carry, which most NCAA programs would die for. He’s shifty and he knows the playbook inside and out. He is a great pass blocker and outside of a few incidents with the law in his college career, he still has the integrity to stay on the team despite such distractions (see Washaun Ealey). At least he’s not Stephen Garcia..get arrested 3 times and still be on the team somehow.
Boo Malcolme and Carlton Thomas will only play roles in this offense. Malcolme will get carries up the middle on short yardage and Thomas will be a swing back.
For all the UGA haters out there who are spitting on Murray, I’ll say this-his first year, threw for over 3,000 yards and ran for 300+ (primarily on break-down situations when we needed to make a first down). In his first year, he may have had a losing record against “winning” a.k.a. great programs, but he also showed what he is made of.
I’m not too worried about the O Line. We have a lot of experience there in 2 out of the 5 positions and they will only help the others to gel together (not to mention the tight ends who are great in blocking and receiving and will help on rushing plays anyway).
By the way, last point, I heard on College Football Live today that the main reason why the SEC has dominated in college football the last 5 years was because of their D-Line. Hello, we’ll have one of the best in the SEC this year. Deangelo Tyson getting moved back to his natural position of DE, Abry Jones on the other end (a proven DE in the SEC) and John Jenkins (JUCO transfer who came from the same program Mt. Cody did for Alabama) holding down the Nose..umm, looks like we’ll have the best D-Line in the SEC..not to mention our Outside Linebackers who are all proven and can rush the edge with the best of them.
It will be a special season. Write it down.
Go Dawgs!!

King has yet to show us anything. What have we seen from him? No heart, no desire, no drive, no hunger, no fight. He has had competition for the last three years and that has not motivated him. Why will competition this year change anything?
The same can be said about the offensive line.
I am excited about this team. But don’t try and get me all hyped up on King. Talent and potential don’t mean crap if you don’t have the hunger, the drive, and the desire to do it. Some things can’t be taught. Either you have it or you don’t. Caleb so far has shown he doesn’t!

I like Malcom. He has those heavy legs that keep moving when initially hit. That is a feature that King and Sleasy Ealey simply did not do. it is King’s last hooray and I know that he wants to go pro ……………..so PROVE IT NOW.
Caleb King and Boo Malcom and Carlton Thomas and Crowell, ought to be very decent in tandem. We need to utilize them and their disparate skill sets and try to avoid the up the middle stuff with Carlton Thomas, like last year.
In the end, given what UGA has on campus and soon to arrive ……………….it had better be a decent 9-3 or 10-2 year. UGA last won the SEC about 5 or 6 years ago and that is simply too long to wait with supposedly great recruiting.
Now? The coaching needs to step up with or without certain players on campus. It is the way that it is. Richt has known that to compete in the SEC at the highest levels, your D and O lines with depth are key. Without beefy, physical linemen ………….. you are sunk. We shall see soon enough. Gimmicks will not win in the SEC.

This group of running backs reminds me a lot of the 2007 season, pre-season we had Thomas Brown ( an experienced proven senior), a redshirt freshman named Knowshon Moreno who wore the number 24 jersey (who made some impressive runs in that spring game and kind of made a name for himself which set him up to have that breakout season) and Caleb King ( the No.1 running back recruit in the nation).
This season we have a somewhat proven and experienced senior in Caleb King (playing the same role as Thomas Brown did in ‘07), a redshirt freshman named Ken “BOO” Malcome who is wearing that lucky 24 jersey (playing the same role as Knowshon Moreno did in 07′), and then we have the number one running back recruit in the nation in Isaiah Crowell ( who, lets hope not, might be playing the same role as King did in 07′)
Prediction: Now I’m not saying that Malcome is gunna break out a 1400 yard season like KnowMo did and I’m certainly not saying that Crowell is gunna sit on the sideline the whole year, but look for Caleb King to be the starter out of the gates and then see if MR. Malcome doesn’t surprise you the same way KnowMo surprised everyone. This first season look for Crowell to be more of a compliment to Malcome and King, at least for the first 4-6 games. King will get the job done as he seems poised and determined to make the most of his last chance to impress NFL teams and show them that he can compete at the next level. I’ve pretty much lost all hope for Thomas and Barton, both are too under-sized and a huge liability with they’re fumbling problems. Just let King and Malcome pound it between the tackles and then let murray either throw it deep over the safties or scramble to the outside and remind us why he’s so much fun to watch.
Season Prediction: 11-1 SEC CHAMPS!!!

If King can use the elusiveness he has displayed at times in his career, he can be a very servicable back, and put up some good numbers. He is the type of runing back that can slip under the radar and if he plays to his potential, can put up decednt numbers. He will need to step it up, not only for his future but for UGA to have a decent running attack. We do have ther backs but right now, the experience level is very low. We need King to perform well and allow the other running backs to get seasoned. By the 7th or 8th game, I would hope the others that are going to be the future at that position for UGA, to be with the program, and be able to start in the future.

Lokks like Crowell’s competition just got slimmer, LOL. I wonder if he now feels a little more pressure or not. C. King has let himself, his team mates and his plans fr the future be largely flushed down the drain.
I would hope that CMR boots his butt off the team, and recoups the scholarship, that now appears to have been largely wasted.
King sort of reminds you of our government. We spend 30 billion designing a weapon system, then decide we can’t afford to make anymore of the system, keep the ones we have and spend twice as much maintaining them as we normally would. This sort of parallels the C. King scholarship. Wasted money, with no chance to recover the cost. He will now probably end up in society with very little chance of success and he will become a burden to society. I know that is harsh but when you have been given as much as that kid was, and you throw it all away, what can he do now?
It is sad for college football as well as UGA.

So it took 3 years to find out we had a dawg that would not hunt. CK’s HS was not part of the Atlanta/Fulton system??

Greater Atlanta Christian Academy, a private fund school. He is 23 years old right now. It is interesting to note that wikpedia has already updated his Bio. and notes that he played football and was academically inelgible to play for the 2011 season. That is sort of like having your obituary published before you actually die, LOL. I think Mr. King has now sufficiently proven by his actions, that it is time for him to move on. He is a scholarship spot that UGA will need in the future.

Well now we are down to NO runningbacks with playing time in college but the great Calvin Thomas. I told ya that yall would miss Ealey. Now if the great Crowell don’t produce or gets injured as he was his last year of highschool, what will we be left with? Remember me when I say I told you so.

Chip,
Please skip the review series on the Defense now, LOL. Not saying it is a bad omen or anything, but darn, we have got to cut our loses to one possible LB. Great series so far, but darn, you would need to be a soothsayer to predict the player attrition bug that has hit UGA so far this off season. The way it is going, if somebody writes an article about the stadium, you almost expect to read in a day or two, to hear about an earth quake destroying it or some other natural disaster.
We need to get the season started where you expect attrition to happen on the football field. LOL.

I hope Crowell isn’t enrolled in that tough Housing major that King flunked out of, excuse me, he did not have “satisfactory progress”.

At fullback i want figgins to start at 6-4 272 pounds he’s a great blocker and good receiver he can be a huge factor in the offense and let zander be the backup and come in like every third possesion. at tailback i think uga with be ok they have my speed and big play potential at the position with carlton thomas and crowell and malcome brings a different element with his power running still and would be great in short yardage and goalline but ono third down i would have figgins as the third down back because of his blocking, receving, and size and i think he could pick up the biltz with no problem.
