UGA assistant recruiting coordinator for football resigns (UPDATED)

Georgia is going through a transition in its football recruiting office.

Charles Cantor, who has served as an assistant recruiting coordinator under coach Mark Richt since March of 2008, resigned from that position last month. The Bulldogs are currently in the process of seeking a replacement.

UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity, responding to a freedom of information request for details, declined to comment on speculation that Cantor was asked to leave because of his alleged involvement in NCAA violations.

“He just resigned,” McGarity said. “Charles moved on to other things. We wish him well.”

In a one-sentence resignation letter to the UGA Athletic Association’s human resources office dated June 14, Cantor — who went by “Charlie” and “Chuck” — wrote that he was leaving “to pursue other opportunities.” His resignation came four days after Georgia football legend Herschel Walker was in Athens for a two-day visit with the football team.

Cantor’s resignation comes on the heels of the Bulldogs inking a top 10-ranked recruiting class in 2011. However, he has been directly or indirectly involved in several NCAA secondary violations committed by the football program the past three years.

Reached by telephone Tuesday, Cantor declined to answer questions about his resignation but instead offered a written statement, which he sent via email:

“It has been a pleasure working with Coach Richt and the staff at Georgia football,” Cantor wrote. “The future looks bright at Georgia . This past year we assembled an outstanding recruiting class that [the] Bulldog nation should be very proud of and allow the Bulldogs to have the increased competition at every position across the board. It is competition that will allow Georgia to get to the top of SEC. Georgia is in a great position to finish out through signing day with a great 2012 recruiting class. I know I gave my all to Georgia football and every one of the past and present recruits that ever stepped foot in Athens knows that.

“I never knowingly broke any recruiting rules at the University of Georgia . We have worked within the framework of the NCAA recruiting manual to present Georgia as a ideal place for many young men to pursue their college football aspirations. Great opportunities lie ahead in my future and I am prepared to pursue those now.”

Cantor would not say where he will resume his career but acknowledged it will be in the recruiting side of college athletics.

Cantor’s vacated position is an important one in the recruiting process. He served as a human database of information for Richt and his assistant football coaches and was a point person for arranging and orchestrating visits for prospects. His duties are currently being absorbed by recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and assistant Connie Connelly.

Cantor came to Georgia from Rutgers, where he served in a similar capacity, in March of 2008. Before that he was a graduate assistant coach, graduate recruiting assistant and student manager at Florida State. He holds sports science education and sports management degrees from FSU.

Ok, I normally wouldn’t comment on a UGA related story, but this struck me as strange reporting.

UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity, responding to a freedom of information request for details, declined to comment on speculation that Cantor was asked to leave because of his alleged involvement in NCAA violations. “He just resigned,” McGarity said. “Charles moved on to other things. Didn’t get it that he was actively bringing people in or involved in that process. The article said that he was primarily responsible for info advising, dataprocessing recruiting info to Richt and others. Herc would be an emissary, not a numbers cruncher.

Agree that the paranoia button has been pushed, but thus far there is nothing to see here. Our method of instantaneously self-reporting inadvertent violations makes me believe that there has been a difference of opinion and Charlie lost. Sometimes good people get fired because their ideas pressure those with a different idea. It ain’t bad, it’s a fact of life. We should all wish him well (unless he shows up hanging around Lyles) and thank him for being good enough to be valuable to us for 3 yrs.

If this guy is responsible for giving Richt info about recruiting, then i’m glad he is gone. Because obviously Richt hasn’t been gettting any info for the 2012 class, because he is getting his ass handed to him by Bama,Fl, Auburn, and now even Vandy. Richt will blame the players, the coaches, and now assistant recruiting coordinator for his terrible recruiting efforts this year. Wonder who he is gonna throw under the bus for his pathetic coaching ablility? He already dumped Martinez, and the rest of the defensive staff, maybe he should look at his offense, and it’s inept coaching staff, starting with himself&his lover bobo. This guy is a joke, and he is showing his true colors, can’t wait until he starts 0-2, he will probably blame the players that have left this sinking ship. eYe have no idea if Richt spent time nuturing Martinez as a defensive coach but my gut feeling was he likely wasn’t able to other than promoting him. eYe always liked to promote from within if at all possible. Too many of Mark Richt’s choices haven’t probably been ideal or even worked out. He is the type coach who can win some games but eYe have never felt comfortable with his coaching overall. To me Richt understands the game to a point but has lacked that killer instinct and rested his laurels on gimmicks rather than spirit and determination. People evolve over time if we live long enough to and maybe it is possible for him to mature into a leader. eYe think this would be a great time for that to happen and if he is successful to fully comprehend he can’t let things go as he allowed for several seasons. Like everyone and their brother has said, this year is the defining moment.

that right there admits he was. wonder how many illegal things were done the past 2 recruiting years. that’s what happens when you are desperate to win. richt does his little week trip to central america as a sideshow distraction. what did he do down there anyway? just walk around and look at stuff and eat? looked more like a vacation than help. never once saw a photo of him helping build anything. just saw him standing around looking bored like he does on the uga sideline.

Cantor’s resignation comes on the heels of the Bulldogs inking a top 10-ranked recruiting class in 2011. However, he has been directly or indirectly involved in several NCAA secondary violations committed by the football program the past three years.

I like many fans wish Cantor well and wanna thank him for helping Georgia these past years. I just hope we can get another great recruiter again without just filling a void.
If Hershel Walker would recruit, i’d be all for it. I dont know if Hershel has ever thought about coaching RB’s but that would be ideal. I would even take him over Bobo as O.C. Atleast we’d have some running game again.
Hershel may not want to or he might just have other things on the burner but hey it never hurts to ask. If he did recruit then just imagine that what great running back prospects we would have access to if Hershel recruited them.
