Georgia is going through a transition in its football recruiting office.

Charles Cantor, who has served as an assistant recruiting coordinator under coach Mark Richt since March of 2008, resigned from that position last month. The Bulldogs are currently in the process of seeking a replacement.

UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity, responding to a freedom of information request for details, declined to comment on speculation that Cantor was asked to leave because of his alleged involvement in NCAA violations.

“He just resigned,” McGarity said. “Charles moved on to other things. We wish him well.”

In a one-sentence resignation letter to the UGA Athletic Association’s human resources office dated June 14, Cantor — who went by “Charlie” and “Chuck” — wrote that he was leaving “to pursue other opportunities.” His resignation came four days after Georgia football legend Herschel Walker was in Athens for a two-day visit with the football team.

Cantor’s resignation comes on the heels of the Bulldogs inking a top 10-ranked recruiting class in 2011. However, he has been directly or indirectly involved in several NCAA secondary violations committed by the football program the past three years.

Reached by telephone Tuesday, Cantor declined to answer questions about his resignation but instead offered a written statement, which he sent via email:

“It has been a pleasure working with Coach Richt and the staff at Georgia football,” Cantor wrote. “The future looks bright at Georgia . This past year we assembled an outstanding recruiting class that [the] Bulldog nation should be very proud of and allow the Bulldogs to have the increased competition at every position across the board. It is competition that will allow Georgia to get to the top of SEC. Georgia is in a great position to finish out through signing day with a great 2012 recruiting class. I know I gave my all to Georgia football and every one of the past and present recruits that ever stepped foot in Athens knows that.

“I never knowingly broke any recruiting rules at the University of Georgia . We have worked within the framework of the NCAA recruiting manual to present Georgia as a ideal place for many young men to pursue their college football aspirations. Great opportunities lie ahead in my future and I am prepared to pursue those now.”

Cantor would not say where he will resume his career but acknowledged it will be in the recruiting side of college athletics.

Cantor’s vacated position is an important one in the recruiting process. He served as a human database of information for Richt and his assistant football coaches and was a point person for arranging and orchestrating visits for prospects. His duties are currently being absorbed by recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and assistant Connie Connelly.

Cantor came to Georgia from Rutgers, where he served in a similar capacity, in March of 2008. Before that he was a graduate assistant coach, graduate recruiting assistant and student manager at Florida State. He holds sports science education and sports management degrees from FSU.

1953 dawg,
when has Richt EVER blamed a bad game/season/recruiting class on a coach/player/etc. Have you ever specifically heard him blame the 09 season on Willlie? No. He blames himself actually. He blamed himself for taking away two a days last year for why we werent physical. Get your facts right

Calm down everyone. Secondary violations are made of accidental pocket dialing or a recruit’s little brother answering the phone during contact period. This sounds like UGA is adamant about running a squeaky clean program and kudos to them. Wish Cantor well.

eYe have no idea if Richt spent time nuturing Martinez as a defensive coach but my gut feeling was he likely wasn’t able to other than promoting him. eYe always liked to promote from within if at all possible. Too many of Mark Richt’s choices haven’t probably been ideal or even worked out. He is the type coach who can win some games but eYe have never felt comfortable with his coaching overall. To me Richt understands the game to a point but has lacked that killer instinct and rested his laurels on gimmicks rather than spirit and determination. People evolve over time if we live long enough to and maybe it is possible for him to mature into a leader. eYe think this would be a great time for that to happen and if he is successful to fully comprehend he can’t let things go as he allowed for several seasons. Like everyone and their brother has said, this year is the defining moment.

Georgia has tried to “brand” its athletic program as one of high integrity, standards, success, etc.
However, when you peek behind the curtain, its not different from some of its peers. Dont kid yourself Dawg fan or not.

I see the other news sources have corrected his title to what it was, just (one of several I assume) recruiting assistants. Not Assistant recruiting co-ordinator. Is that correct?

that right there admits he was. wonder how many illegal things were done the past 2 recruiting years. that’s what happens when you are desperate to win. richt does his little week trip to central america as a sideshow distraction. what did he do down there anyway? just walk around and look at stuff and eat? looked more like a vacation than help. never once saw a photo of him helping build anything. just saw him standing around looking bored like he does on the uga sideline.

If it’s an NCAA violation for a recruiting assistant to introduce a prospective student athlete to the greatest college football player ever to grace a field of green under a bright autumn sky, then the NCAA’s an asinine critter!

Tell you what 53dawg, if that’s when you attended UGA then you’ve clearly lost it and need to seek help – maybe an assisted living facility, they put up with a lot of senile old farts (don’t ask what they do in your soup though). If it means when you were born, then you’re just stupid and hate-filled. All you Weepin’ Wally fans were alike…and you probably still believe that he never told Bear Bryant anything about the ‘61 Dogs.

I would think it would make more sense to link this to a bunch of secondary violations and this guy is responsible.

Probably just another in a long line of folks McGarity is getting rid of that were hired by Evans.

Remember what UGA Insider said? If you were not hired by McGarity, you better be really good at your job. This is why Coach Richt is under scrutiny.

eYe think we all better hope this Athletic Director is looking hard at how things are done/not being done. Could care less about the former AD’s sexual adventures but reality is it is most likely a blessing he is gone. eYe could give a flip less what his race or nationality was but he obviously was more of a deterrant than a help to the football program. eYe say that because he wanted Richt to be a CEO type of coach and the Good Lord knows Mark Richt had/has enough trouble as it is.

Where do you nut bags think that cmr is being outrecruited? We can only get 20 or so recruits from ga. Out of the 100 that are good every year – do you want cmr to pull the saban ploy and oversign kids just to keep them out of other teams hands like Bear Bryant used to do?

Just win baby, that’s all CMR has to do. He has the resources, both financial and physical within Georgia, and Nationwide. There’s no “acceptable” excuse for the state of our program given all he has at his disposal, at least from this Dawg. Win and all the critics will be quieted. What’s so hard to understand about that, apparently the Kool Aid is clouding the ability for collective reasoning among some of you.
