Tight ends: Led by Orson Charles, strong UGA legacy poised to continue
6:00 am July 5, 2011, by Chip Towers
We’re about one month away from the start of preseason football practices in Athens, so it’s time to take a closer look at Georgia’s 2011 football team. This is the third in a series during which we will break down each of the Bulldogs’ position groups to give you an idea of who the projected starters are and what the expectations might be. Then as always, we’ll throw it open for your commentary and analysis. There are only 60 days until Georgia’s season opener against Boise State. Time to get busy. . . .

There aren't many tight ends that can match the speed and athleticism of Georgia's Orson Charles, who promises to be a primary target for the Bulldogs this season. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
THE TIGHT ENDS:
- Projected starters: Orson Charles (Jr., 6-3, 241), Aron White (Sr., 6-4, 239)
- Others to watch: Sophomore Arthur Lynch (6-5, 272), who played as a true freshman, returns to action after a redshirt season and gives the Bulldogs some extra thump on running downs. True freshman Jay Rome will likely get some looks on offense and special teams.
- Key losses: The Bulldogs moved senior Bruce Figgins, a former starter at tight end, to fullback in the spring to shore up depth in the backfield.
- Key fact: Georgia has produced an enormous amount of tight end talent for the NFL, including Leonard Pope, Ben Watson, Randy McMichael, Jermaine Wiggins and several others. That legacy seems poised to continue.
- Key fact II: White has already graduated and was actually selected to be a student speaker at graduation ceremonies in December. He’s a team leader and probably underrated as a football player.
- Key question: Does Charles become the primary target for quarterback Aaron Murray? The two have played together since they were at Plant High in Tampa and the Bulldogs lost their go-to guy early to the NFL in wide receiver A.J. Green. It could argued that Charles, who has averaged 16.2 yards per catch the last two seasons, has been under-utilized with 49 receptions and 5 TDs in 26 games. He won’t be under-utilized this season.
- Recent developments: Georgia’s problems on the offensive line could actually translate into more dependence on this position. In a pro-style offense, it’s never certain whether the tight end is going to block or run a pass route. The Bulldogs can move Murray around in the backfield and hit Charles and White on quick patterns and keep outside linebackers and defensive ends on their heels. Don’t forget about the 6-6, 250-pound Rome. The AJC Super 11 selection out of Valdosta was ranked the No. 1 prospect in the nation at his position by ESPN and is expected to be a huge pass-catching threat. He will also be given the opportunity to show his stuff.
- Outlook: Excellent. This is unquestionably the strongest position on the team.
- Your turn: Your thoughts on the tight ends?

Go Dawgs! TE left, TE right, TE down the middle. Whatever it takes. Murray will use them all a lot this year. Two of them will be gone after this season. So, let’s get this team back on track using this part of our offense for ball control and scoring touchdowns rather than field goals and help out the defense.
Did I say Go Dawgs!

If Rome is good enough to play, they should add a few lbs to Lynch and make him a tackle. Seems that would be better than keeping him at TE, where he will only get a couple of downs per game.

Charles defintely got to few targets last year. Especially when AJ was out. He probably needs 60 catches this year. The rest have about 40 catches to split amongst them, but Charles can stretch the field from the TE position to help the perimeter passing game and the running game.

Say what you will, but you have to like UGA’s offensive scheme. ln Murray’s freshmen yr that offense was explosive. Using the TE has always been a “side show” with Georgia’s offense. This yr I think it might be a good thing we have some depth.

Use of this position will be pivotal to the offense, especially early in the season while the OL is getting some game experience as a unit. With the number of proven TE’s on the team I would think a few more double TE’s sets would be used, remember some on this list can catch and block.

50 sideline passes and
25 running plays straight up the middle must take place before the TE is even considered.

Feel sorry for Charles. A great talent that is not utilized by Bobo and Richt. What a SHOCKER!! Bobo is the biggest problem with UGA’s offense, not the talent or the players. This clown who was promoted for no reason from Q.B. coach by the wonder mind Richt, couldn’t win with first round talent Stafford, Moreno, Green, and MoMass, that is all you need to know about Bobo and RIcht’s offensive minds. It’s a shame to have wasted all of that talent, and what’s even more shameful is these two clowns still have jobs at one of the top programs in the SEC. Charles will turn pro after this year, and you certainly can’t blame him. As a matter of fact the reason all the top talent in the UGA program turn pro early is to get away from Bobo, Richt, and the terrible coaching they receive while at UGA.

Bobo should go spend some time with the Falcons staff. Learn how to run multiple tight end sets for purposes other than to run for a yard up the middle.
Folks let’s face it, the offense is going to struggle, especially early on. The defense is going to HAVE to carry this team or we will have a new staff in Athens in 2012.

Georgia is very talented and deep at TE……but you might have to use them a lot blocking instead of catching the ball downfield….except for Charles…who will mostly line up as a slot receiver, I would expect….due to Georgia’s lack of depth and proven talent at WR.
UK Dawg…..
Boise State will give the Dawgs a lot to handle….maybe a lot more to handle than you think. But SC is the game you HAVE to win this year. Lose that game, and you play for second in the East.
SEC EAST Prediction for this Year
1. South Carolina – undefeated against all East teams
2. Georgia – Loses a very close one to SC
3. Florida – Loses to South Carolina and Georgia (yep, I said it…but not sure I believe it yet…a lot depends on the play of Brantley…and I don’t hold out much hope in that area based on his spring game performance…or lack of one)
4. Kentucky – Loses to SC, Georgia, Florida
5. Tennessee – Loses to Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina
6. Vandy – Loses to everyone

Destin Dawg said it right: “play them all; play them early; no seniority.” It doesn’t get any simpler and PLAINER than that. Put them ALL in the line of fire and see who responds with the winning attitude. Am I a coach? Hell, no. But a different mindset needs to be in place this season.

Count me as a big fan of the guy, and hoping as Murray develops, he can get him the ball more often. I know when asked last year specifically about Charles, the answer was they they had plays for him every time they took the field on offense, but for a variety of reasons, Murray couldn’t get him the ball.
I’m very confident that the TE has been a big part of the philosophy though. If you look at the TE poition, it has been the second leading receiver on the team. That was true last year, eclipsing Durham. Only AJ got more balls throw his way that the TE(s). 2 yrs ago Charles only trailed Moore by 2 reception to be the second leading receiver on the entire team as a freshman. If you combine the other TE, they were by far. I would venture to guess that’s not far from being the 10 year trend, so there is no reluctance from this staff to use them.

TE’s will be ready to play. Will CMB use them effectively? I don’t know. I think with the TE’s and the WR Murray will have lots of weapons to throw to. T. King has pretty good hands. It will all come down to the running game. The OL has to make holes and protect Murray. Same as last year. If Murray can’t have 3 sec’s to make a throw, then long year. Also can’t say it enough…OL has to be tougher this year, dig in and overcome. The rest of the team is fine…just running and OL. Richt/Bobo run a scripted offense UNLESS we get 2-4 TD’s behind. Too many people have commented on how easy it is to predict a play based on field position, down yards to go etc. I to wish they would seek help. I do know that when Richt has the players, he has been able to score points, But he kills me play calling NOT TO LOSE and lately being able to run the clock out with the ball late in the game with a small lead. He will go into a shell and we punt and hold our breath.

White is a great guy, but he has had a problem with dropping the ball here and there. I hope he catches everything this year. Charles is just phenomenal, but he is still a bit of a hybrid. (So is Alshon Jeffery). Lynch looks like he has unlimited potential. He is huge, but the guy has had incredible hands and running instincts in the last two GDays. To me, he looks like the best pure TE in the lot–great hands, runner, and blocker! Moving him to tackle would waste his great hands and running ability. Rome sounds like he could follow in Charles’ steps. An incredible group! I would love to see the two TE set where either Charles/Rome goes from a flex out to a true SE position to match them on a linebacker they can outrun, or a corner they can outsize (again like SC used Jeffery at SE). But, CMB has so much talent here he could use them in ten different ways to put pressure on the other teams. I would also like to see liberal use of the shovel, just like UF used Hernandez so effectively.

If the coaches want people to come to the game who are willing to collectively pay 100’s of millions to see the Dawgs, they have to expect demanding fans. Any of the coaches could become HS coaches and they wouldn’t have to read the “experts’” advice on the AJC. When you get paid millions to coach, you have to produce results. Using the line “he won with someone else’s recruits” is the dumbest thing anyone can say.
Donnan had his chance and blew it. He said before the 2000 season “I have waited my entire life to coach a team like this.” He then went out and lost to a SC team that was 0-11 the year before. Plus he hid Quincy Carter from all of us because the truth would have been too painful. Remember the thumb injury? Yeah right.
Richt came in and won the SEC. Donnan would have lost to Auburn and we would be sitting here today having not won the SEc since 1982.
You can blow all the sheet out of your piehole that you want to. Bottom line is Richt has raised the bar and now is a victim of his own success.

As a matter of fact the reason all the top talent in the UGA program turn pro early is to get away from Bobo, Richt, and the terrible coaching they receive while at UGA” is contradictory and has no merit. All of the players you mention could’ve gone most anywhere they wanted to play football, they along with their families chose to come play for Mark Richt, because he such a bad coach? If he was such a horrible clown of a coach why would this elite talent come to Georgia and play for him to begin with? I honestly believe Orson could contribute in our offense as an optional slot receiver. We could run a one back set, with Crowell as the primary back; put Tavarres out at flanker and run a double tight with Aron and Jay. Alternate Aron or Jay out with Marlon or Rantavious; like back and forth between a twin set and regular one back/slot set. Or just put Orson at H-back/Wing Back with with Marlon and Taverres both split on each side. I should be on staff…lol…j/k

DIL, mighty fine comment on the ppg allowed. I stated on the blog over the weekend (and then had to fend off some guy popting at 17 different people) that Bobo could call the exact same game plan and if the defense was only marginally better, they win 9-10 games. HOWEVER, having a more expereinced QB, I am poistive he does not call the same thing. (putting aside the discussion that he doesnt really “call” the results of the play in the first place).
Somebody bent out of shape about that comment, but could come up with absolutely nothing to dispute it, despite me specifically asking him to.
In UGA wins last year, they outscored thier opponent something like 47-16, best in the league. But in the losses they were outscored by a margin of 8. And in the losses that defined the season is was 3.
Obviously, it was the lack of scoring in some games that are most memorable, but giving up a few less points WOULD have been a 9-10 win season as well.

I don’t think orson charles has been under utilized, I think he has been inconsistent. In some games he blows up and shows that he is athletically the best player on the field, other games he just looks like everybody else. He should’ve shined last year more then he did with Green and durham on the outside occupying the defensive backs, but consistently he did not do so. He’s going to have to live up to his potential this year for UGA to have a shot at the SEC east.

Agree with Lex about BVG to a point. Our defense did bail us out a bunch back then…and it made for a fun game to watch because something could break our way on Defense at any given moment. That was not the case in the bend and bend and bend then break Martinez era. D looked much better last year–at times. I expect the improvement to continue.
It is not Bobo that is the problem on offense. The problem is that we haven’t changed anything! Every DC in the SEC knows every one of our plays. They not only know our plays but they know our check downs too. So they can use a defensive formation that they know will cause us to check into a run play knowing exactly what is coming, then drill us. It is just sad at this point. It has been going on for years–we just happened to have a few guys that were that much better than the players on the other team. Not the case anymore.
Finally to the TEs. Yeah–they could be awesome this year. Or our O-Line could be so bad that we have to use the TE’s to stay and block on every run and pass play. I am hoping the Oline suprises me. Seems like we recruit Oline as an after thought. We never put a premium on getting the best linemen available. You’d think that Richt would understand that Oline is the foundation of the entire pass happy Offense!

Thanks Trojon. Next time we need completely inaccurate information, we know who to call. Charles had multiple reception, in all but a few games of his career. The UF game comes to mind as one. 6 rec, 108 yrd (double what AJ had in that one).
He is the top “guy who catches passes” returning on this team even compared to any true WR, certainly the TE position is.

That is correct, and a little enlightning as to how good DCs shut us down.
It’s also correct that if the D had allowed only 15 points per game last season, we still woulda lost 3 games.

This really goes back to the O-line, but a new strength and conditioning coach will show up in the O – line this years.
In the last few years our O -line was not in shape and where just not a strong as our top SEC competition. I was told in my youth by a football coach that was a Marine… “fatigue makes cowards of us all.” and that is damn sure right. It also makes cowards in the trenches playing big time football. Those big wins in October are being won right or lost right now. Because offensive lineman are built not recruited.

The problem with the offense IMO is the mindset of the coaches instilled into the players. 4th down and 1 at the opponents 24 yard line-do you kick a FG or go for it? Are we a running team or a passing team? Can we become a power team with a suspect OL and mediocre running backs?
The defense better be ready to stop some folks or we are in trouble

Since Richt has that “extra time” on his hands to concentrate on football, he needs to find out when…..
1. The last time Ga blocked a punt?
2. The last time Ga faked a field goal?
3. The last time Ga used clock management to score with 2 minutes to play before the half?
4. The last time Ga ran the No Huddle?
5. The last time our Head Coach showed some motivation, fire and enthusiasm in the locker room and on the sidelines?
6. The last time Ga showed a creative offense?
7. The last time our Coaches took the blame?
8. The last time we did the unexpected, instead of the obvious.
9. The last time Richt actually said in public the words “win a Championship”?
Richt/Bobo run a scripted offense that is very predictable. Richt was hired because he was very smart offensively at FSU. Now, he calls plays not to lose, instead of to win. I sure hope we have some tricks up our sleeve during each game to keep the other team on their toes.

I don’t think that Murray is going to be able to utilize the TE position as a pocket passer might be able to in this offensive package. Murray’s problems out of the play action are an obvious hole in the offensive scheme. You can say that is because of the lack of a run game but I would argue that it is Murray’s inability to pass the ball over the middle that causes problems with the run game. If you are a defensive coordinator and you know that the QB can’t throw the seam route then you are able to do a good bit more to defend the run with the linebackers. The bottom line is Murray can’t see over the line to throw the ball out of the pocket and that is a fatal flaw in Bobo’s offense. I hope this gapping hole has been addressed by the coaching staff but they can’t make Murray 2 to 3 inches taller. Here’s to hoping we have great defensive play! Go Dawgs!

Wow! Sorry you missed last year’s Auburn offense – never in my life have I seen a more un-scripted offense. And I don’t think Urban Myer ran a “scripted offense” last season to once again defeat a more talented UGA.
I don’t think you could call the early days of Mark Richt’s UGA run, “scripted” either. Hurry up offense, trick, yes “trick” plays, reverses, double reverses, etc.
Give me a W. That’s my only wish. How the coach gets it done means nothing to me – pass 80% of the time or 20%. Draw plays in the dirt. Doesn’t matter. Whatever it takes to get the W.

1 Freshman in SEC history who has passed for more yards than Aaron Murray did in 2010, when the Georgia QB piled up 3,049 passing yards. In 2000, Kentucky QB Jared Lorenzen set the SEC freshman mark with 3,687.

I’ve been saying it for two years now that we have a under-utilized weapon in Orson Charles. The guy is big, fast, and athletic. He can run past the linebacker, and is bigger and just as fast as most secondaries. Bobo is a complete incompetent idiot if he doesn’t realize what he has in Charles. I understand I am just a fan, and not a coach in the practices, games, or situations during a game, but watching in the stands and on TV has its advantages as well. Seeing Charles being clutch in the LSU game as a Freshmen let me know he has the tools as a big time target. He reminds me a lot of the athleticism of Aaron Hernandez at Florida, and Georgia needs to use his big muscular body just like Florida used Hernandez. Split him out and let him stretch the field as a receiver, put Jay Rome in to block, and you have another set of plays. The scouting report on Rome says he’s a much better blocker, so it works.
Charles will only add the the elite tight ends Georgia if Bobo opens up his game plan and gets his athletes the ball, instead of run up the middle, run to the right, pass in the flats, run left. Very easy playing arm chair quarterback, but it seems as if half the fans scout better than some of these coaches, and that’s pretty pathetic by any standard I believe. Get Charles and Branden Smith the ball in space, and then see what Crowell, Nick Marshall, and Malcolm Mitchell can do with it.

@kody- Come on dude. On one side you have AJ Green on the other side you had maybe the 2nd tallest receiver in the conference. Throw in the talent of Orson Charles and almost any QB can have those numbers. Joe Cox threw to the tune of 2500 yards to those guys. I’m not knocking Murray if you really read what I said previously. I’m saying the scheme needs to change to bring out his talent. We started putting him in the shotgun more after the first four games last year so he could read his check downs better. The fact is that he can’t throw over the middle which puts tremendous pressure on the o-line and running game. Square hole round peg. Throw all the stats about Murray at me you want there is only one stat that matters 6-7.

NO, I saw Auburn, and I thought it went well, but not because they were so unpredictable. I also believe the UGA offense wold have looked considereable different had it be run by NewtonType.
I realize that Urban Scrambled around last year but that was purely out of freustration. I’m sure he would have said that. No way would he prefer to look liek he did last year. And yes, he beat Georgia, so? is that the standard you are looking for. helter skelter offense that could barely beat Georgia’s worst team in years? AND FWIW, they were below UGA in pretty much all offensive categories on the year. So that wasn’t a very effective plan. Am positive Urban would have prefered what he had the 4 yrs prior and I can Darn sure predict what they were doing most of the time. Is Alabama unpredictable? ARe they fooling anyone? NO, you know exactly what they are doing and they do it well. Thats how you win. Dod what you do. Not do what you don’t do.

My point being: his offense was so bad, the only good thing it did was beat our even worse offense, (pretty much on mis-cues) is not exactly screaming to me, “so lets be more like that”.
I’d be a lot more in favor of using an example like: When we took that ol boring Bobo scripted offense down to J’ville in 2007, and beat Urban’s ultra creative Tebow driven machine with it. It’s execution, not squiggly lines from page 273 in the playbook that is the answer.

I am guessing that the UF fans were very happy to beat Georgia on that day. I am also guessing if you asked them if they ever want to go back to the type of offense they had last year on the whole, not many of them would vote for it.
You are making 2 seperate points. Using last years UF offense as an example of that you want the Georgia offense to look like going forward is just not making your original one very well.

There was a post I read somewhere last year, that bobo’s offense has scored more points and the average per game has increased compared to when richt ran the offense. Last year I don’t know if that remained true, but it is something to think about. As many have said, when richt called plays he had the luxury of BVG defense that simply didn’t allow the opposing offense to score.
The main problem with the offense is consistency, and I think a lot of this is due to not sticking with what is working. How many times have we seen a running back get hot, then the next series they are no where to be found? How many times last year did we see a hand off on first down go for nothing or negative yardage, while murray is terrorizing the team with the passing game? First and foremost stick with what works. The next thing that kills the offense is the inability to get 1-2 yards on the ground when they need it. I would rather the offense be 3rd and goal from the 6 then 3rd and goal from the 1. Hopefully new strength and conditioning and the addition of crowell and figgins will change that.

How could a team with this much talent have any problems at all? Is Phil Steele, Lindy’s, Sporting News, and several other publications wrong in there assessment of talent? UGA has 3 TE’s ( Charles,Lynch, and now Rome were all top #1’s or #2’s by P. Steele in there respective classes) and White was like #10 in his class. This cannot and should not be a problem with talent at this caliber. Dawg fans you should expect nat’l championships, like those hicks next door in Alabama.Three to four yeas down the line when we see all them striving in the NFL, we’re all gonna be saying why was these guys not used more at UGA like this. Alright friend. Fair enough. Seems to be splitting hairs to me but okay. Not boring, just predictable. Not major changes, just a completely different philosophy.
We actually agree more than we don’t about the offense. Basically it’s just not getting it done on the whole, when it counts.
I just personally do not think it the plays called, it the plays played. And that goes back to the winter, and over the break, and into camp. By Saturday, its a done deal. You’re just not “calling” unpredictably to cover IF the basic stuff isn’t working. NO idea what the issue is with execution, but they need to figure it out.
But Give me the very predictable offense that beat UF in 2007, and keep the 3 headed QB UF offense that outlasted our self destruction last year ANY day.

Last year South Carolina beat us because we could not stop Lattimore and thus he got 37 carry’s. Spurrier will always go with what is working. My biggest complaint with Bobo has always been that after we drive for a touchdown with a certain offensive set up, that Bobo will assumes that it want work again and you may not see that set up again all day. ADVICE TO BOBO IS ” IF IT AIN’T BROKE DON’T FIX IT”.
This year Spurrier knows that we will make sure Lattimore doesn’t beat us and Garcia will throw to Alshon Jeffery 20 times, so get ready for it. Garcia could kill someone and Spurrier would play him. It’s all Spurrier has and Spurrier will do what it takes to win.
Let the big boys , Geathers and Jenkins take care of the middle and blitz on every play. The one think that Garcia doesn’t do well is play smart when heavy pressure is put on him.
This year if you want to beat South Carolina you must stop Garcia.

I have a weird feeling that this year will be a special one. I think Richt is done playing with Bobo when it comes to how he runs the offense, and I’m sure there has been a meeting or two between the two where Richt laid down the law. We’ve been in a 3 year slide because Richt & Co. got complacent with how they did things (especially after that let-down of 2008 when we were preseason No. 1).
That said, Charles & King will be the primary receivers for this team. I think they’ll utilize Brown & Troupe in screens and short routes to get them acclimated to playing (since they haven’t had many receptions thusfar). Troupe might get some deep looks. White will primarily be a blocking TE and will get a few catches in the two tight end set when Charles is either off the line in the slot or when he’s being covered (even though he can beat any LB in the country in coverage).
It’s the same with the RB situation. Crowell and King will be primary running backs (with King doing most of the carries/pass-blocking). Carlton Thomas will be a swing-back for throws, Ken Malcolme will primarily be used for short yardage situations since he’s great up the middle.

By October we will have a handle on this matter
July 5th, 2011
4:23 pm
As we go into the summer camp period and then on into Fall, we will have a handle on CMR’s future at UGA. By late October we will then know if CMR will survive and continue as HC at UGA or we will then know that it is over. If we have major losses prior to AU and to Florida and to GT, it will not bode well for him two days after the GT game, which will be a win for UGA.
Offensive line woes, thin at Fullback and frankly at back up QB and LB corps with the new problem issue with Jones out of Columbus …………….. that USC transferee, we will win 10 this year or we will not. CMR must win 10.
The alumni do not want to accept a 9-3 season with a Boise State loss and then two more SEC games to either UT or AU or Mississippi State and/or Florida. 9-3 will not make the alumni happy and it will absolutely place UGA in a Gator Bowl or Outback or Chic Fil A situation and that won’t save him. 11 years will then be enough!!!
CMR can ONLY save himself with a 9-3 season IF …………….IF UGA loses one out of conference game and then two SEC losses but we tie with SC and go to the Dome. This scenario would save CMR. A loss there and then one in the bowl would put UGA at 9-5 and that would stink to high heaven with the alums. 9-3 could end up being a lousy year after another low level bowl game.
10-1 is his ticket.

You are 125% correct. SC and Spurrier will try to test UGA up the middle early on like 2010 but then will throw deep to beat us. THAT is how Spurrier thinks. He does not repeat a repeat and he does that logically, to keep folks of balance. Smart guy he is.
UGA needs to be very formidable in our middle unlike last year. They have wide bodies with Jenkins, Gaithers and Abry Jones now. There is also another young man ready to stop up the middle who did very well in the G Day game. BULK we have unlike in 010 on the middle of the D line, plus barring injuries, our LBs are faster.

Jay Rome is the best blocking tight end I have ever seen. He is already 265 pounds. Add 30 pounds to him and he is an all-American left tackle. He would be a first round NFL draft choice. Very athletic for a big man with long arms to protect the qb’s backside.

Passing to te’s HAS NOT been a major part of this offense. It has been underutilized as an important avenue of our passing game. Not sure why but other than an occassional play that appears to be Murray trying to get rid of the ball or make something out of nothing, it definitely hasn’t been a go to position.

Thunder Dome!!!!
This Sept. 3 in Atlanta, we Georgians (and Dawg Fans) have the opportunity to make a statement.
This may be the most pivotal game we play in deciding our outcome this season. Even if we were to win out the remainder of our schedule and win the SEC championship (the best you could hope for after a loss in the opener), we would not play in a National Championship if Boise remained undefeated, or anybody else for that matter, thus ending the SEC streak with the title game. Well this just can’t happen. We must win. Not because we think we should because we are the bigger program from the SEC and that should be enough to win. Not because we think we can play in a National Championship if we do. Our toughest games will be still to come. It is not because they think they will destroy us since they beat Va Tech last year right before James Madison did and “this isn’t the same team we beat in 2005”. It is because… THIS IS OUR HOUSE. THIS IS IN OUR STATE, IN OUR CAPITAL. THIS IS OUR COCA~COLA. THAT IS OUR DAMN CHICKEN SANDWICH. Do they even have Chic-fil-a in Boise?
When Boise St comes to the Georgia Dome to face us, we the fans have a responsibility to do our part to help our team. If you have ever been to the Dome you know how loud it can be. It is our job to make the walls crumble from our thunderous roar!!!!!!!!! Anytime the Boise offense is on the field it is our job to make as much noise as you’ve ever made. STAY ON YOUR FEET between plays still SCREAMING with all your might. STOMP THE GROUND and CLAP YOUR HANDS. SHAKE YOU KEYS. Bring those CRYING BABIES that you always bring to restaurants. Take off your belts, fold them in half, hold both ends, move your hands in then pull away making the belt pop. Try it, pretty loud. I don’t care if you wear tap shoes. We might take some heat for it if we all showed up in tap shoes, but that would make a ton of noise. Just sayin…
The point is we help win games too. We help motivate our kids to sell out body and mind for us and we strike fear and confusion into the other team. Though our part is nothing to what the players’ and coaches’ roles are, we must still show up prepared and ready to give our all, just like we expect from the team every Saturday. I don’t care if the score is 100-0, we don’t quit making noise or leave early. I want the TV announcers to show the noise meter at the Dome showing new records. Noise can cause miscommunication with play calling, unheard check-offs or audibles from the QB or sidelines, missed kicks, penalties, and turnovers. It can strike fear into the other team and kill momentum. We don’t need to take our feet off the gas, on the field or in the stands, till the game is over and we get that chicken dinner.
I WANT THAT CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!
Then I want to eat chicken again the next week.
Don’t let me down Dawg Fans.
Don’t let our team down.
We will only become champions with each other.

Food Lion Bag Boy……Admittedly funny stuff and perhaps us UGA folks even deserve a little of it. From your perspective as a Gator fan, apparently we do. As poorly as we’ve played this series for a number of years there isn’t much we can crow about, that’s for sure. Last year was pretty close and at least not a rout as some have been. From looking at both teams eYe think UGA has a shot this year though. Your schedule is tougher than ours and you may have some adjustment period to the new coaches. Or maybe you won’t. It’s just hard for a team to stay on top and cranked up for as long as the Gators have. Any team for that matter. If UGA ever had an opportunity for the East this is it. That maybe wishful thinking as we do have numerous question marks heading into the season. Anyway, good luck to you and yours, look forward to perhaps spilling a little salt in your hopeful wounds and try not to let those shopping carts slam into vehicles with UGA displayed.

Interesting comment and truthful but eYe think it starts at the top. What the top dog demands and expects is most likely to be what you get. Rivers run downhill not up. Richt’s strongsuit has never been as a defensive mastermind. That ex cowboy may or may not be one either but eYe’m a hoping! The teams that implement this defense have seemed to struggle getting it into place. I just don’t understand how it could be that much harder than any other scheme to put into play. Of course, there’s alot of things eYe don’t understand so maybe it’s just my lack of knowledge. Ya’ll are exactly right in my estimation about what a really strong defense can do. How are they going to stop someone with Gaithers and Jenkins if they are not in the game at the same time. If the 3-4 does not allow them to be on the field at the same time you have to make adjustments to do so. Short yardage I hope so. You just cannot etch something in stone and stay with it forever…Also why are we using Ogletree at LB when some of you talk of the weaknesses at DB when we are supposed to be loaded at LB? The only way we beat Boise St. is we come out and hammer them really quick like before. If they get ahead, Bobo is not adept in coming back against someone like that and I do not think Grantham will adjust to what they will be doing if they do get a big lead. Their offense is so unpredictable, certainly not like ours. If this does not happen then this will be a good year for the dawgs!!!!

Orson Charles will bolt for the NFL after the season. He is so emblematic of UGA players lately. He came to UGA highly regarded but has yet to really carry the day in any game. He is physically gifted and is a good slot back/tight end in NCAA ball but in NFL, he is too small for tight end. He has done nada so far. Nada.
This is UGA’s lot ……………. we sign some really great athletes but they do not win big games ………..see QB Murray. UGA’s lore ( long ago) was to play as a smart, well coached team. Stafford, No Show Moreno, and the many D players, Jeff Owens,Brandon Smith, etc. came to UGA with high expectations but we have seen no major results, beyond our stomping Hawaii and that goofy QB that they had.
CMR has designed this 4/5 star driven system. He has until season’s end to make it jell this year. We alumni are ready for some new blood and new direction, if he cannot reel off a 10-2 and 11-1 season over the next two years. If we end up say 8-5, then that will not be enough. 9-3 this year might not be either, unless UGA ties in the East and goes to the Dome. We must defeat Florida two years in a row ( they should be down) for me to even believe that CMR can coach well in this league.
I want to see more David Pollack style team players and less of these 8-5 “all world” heroes like Wahsuan Ealey, Matt Stafford or AJ Green or Orson Charles. Name one game that these guys won single handily.

A more logical assumption is that the first year QB had the option to throw the football to his TE on pretty much any play, but given his experience level, and for factor related to other aspects of the offense as a whole and the defensive ability to react to those, he was only able to do that on 40 or 50 times. And while that way the second most used passing option last year (and whould have been on all but about 3 SEC teams), behind throwing it to AJ green, it was not a UGA record, only very high on the list.
OR it might have been the coach telling him to not throw to the TE no matter what becasue he just didn’t want to use that very obvious option.

His last year , Orson Charles will bolt for the NFL but he’s too small to play TE in the SEC?Pete Carroll didn’t think he was too small to play TE at USC. Mark Richt has to prove he can coach in the SEC? Funny that only one team in the league has more SEC titles (LSU) than UGA since Richts arrival. You tip your hand when you describe Moreno as No show (sounds like a techie), 2736 yards rushing in 2 seasons. Moreno, Stafford and Green didn’t show up but were 1st round draft picks in the NFL.

“Dribble?” How do you actually read “dribble,” Narvie?

“Tight ends: Led by Orson Charles, strong UGA legacy poised to continue”
The only tight end in discussion at this point is Mark Richt. I would bet that the pucker factor on his is probably about an 8.5. It will only get tighter as the season gets closer. By mid-October he probably won’t be able to pass gas.

I don’t know, SSIgator, even if the heat is turned up on Richt, he seems, outwardly at least, not to be affected by it.
UGA’s president, AD, and Athletic Board are not obsessed with championships like UF and Bama. Winning records, and challenging for the SEC East most seasons will keep Richt as the coach as long as he wants to be. I expect UF would have fired Richt by now or forced some staff turnover, don’t you?
Not saying I like it. But I believe that’s the way it is in Athens.

My thought was to move Orson to TB and I hopefully Figgins changed his number, looks silly with a 89 playing full back…

@Joey I laugh my self silly every time someone states that the Gators are “obsessed with championships ” B.S…really so obsessed that you hired a coach with NO HC experience…seems like that’s what a UGA or Kentucky would do doesn’t it? @SSIgator how many wins as a HC your guy got now?

You think the UF AD would have handled it any differently that ours did last year sitting at the same desk?

it’s drivel but you knew that. if everyone spent the entire time correcting typos, grammatical mistakes. this would be a really long and boring blog.
there has to be more to this story of the asst. recruiting coordinator leaving. seems more like he was told to leave… gracefully.

as it turns out, he wasn’t technically the “assistant recruiting co-cordinator” as reported, but rather, one of the several “recruiting assistants”. Could very well be that he had other opportunites, but clearly he wasn’t going to advance here for whatever the reasons.

I’m good to go Mary. I’m sure I’ll need reinforcements. I’m afraid old time won’t be much help. Maybe chili dog and onion dog can. Has anybody heard from vidalia dog? Aw, he’s sorta sweet anyway. Bad idea. You’re up old time.

Charles caught a couple of passes a game, 23, White caught maybe 1 a game, and Figgins has caught 9 passes in 3 seasons. It’s not a position at Georgia that matters. QB or WR only 2 positions Richt and Bobo care abvout.

comment from Dawg Stuck in Columbus, OH,,,,” hopefully Figgins changed his number, looks silly with a 89 playing full back”…my reply….jersey cost about a $100 when parents buy a jersey…not to mention other family members…Figgins got one year left…Who CARES what looks silly to you and what you think is not important but his mom looks really good in her 89 jersey… now unless you would like to buy his mom a new jersey …..let me know I’ll give you her address……

“under-utilized with 49 receptions and 5 TDs in 26 game”
And how many more receptions would he have if he didn’t drop 2 out of 3 passes sent his way?
