Offensive line: Continued attrition makes this position one of Georgia’s biggest liabilities
6:00 am July 1, 2011, by Chip Towers
It’s July, which means we’re about one month away from the start of preseason football practices in Athens. So it’s time to start taking a closer look at Georgia’s 2011 football team. Over the next 10 days or so, I’ll be breaking down each of the Bulldogs’ position groups to give you an idea who are the projected starters and what the expectations might be for this season. Then, as always, we’ll throw it open for your commentary and analysis. There are only 64 days until Georgia’s season opener against Boise State. Time to get busy. . . .
THE OFFENSIVE LINE
- Projected starters: LT Cordy Glenn (Sr., 6-5, 348), LG Kenarious Gates (So., 6-5, 328), C Ben Jones (Sr., 6-3, 316), RG Chris Burnette (RSo., 6-2, 313), RT Justin Anderson (Sr., 6-5, 342).
- Others to watch: Austin Long, Kolton Houston and Dallas Lee all will be getting their first action as backups this season. Their development will be critical to establishing much-needed depth.
- Key losses: Four-year starter Clint Boling took his talents to the NFL and would-be senior and projected starter Trinton Sturdivant was lost for a season for the third time in his career due to a knee injury this past spring.
- Recent developments: Georgia lost two players who would have otherwise contributed this season. Junior A.J. Harmon, who was battling for the starting job at right tackle, transferred to Alabama State this past spring after running into academic problems at UGA. Redshirt freshman Brent Benedict, who was slated as a backup at right guard while recovering from a serious high school knee injury, abruptly quit the team in June for “personal reasons.” He, too, was offered an unconditional release.
- Key fact: The offensive line will be under the direction of first-year coach Will Friend. Friend was hired on Feb. 7 to replace Stacy Searels, who bolted for the University of Texas the previous month. Friend came to Athens from UAB, where he worked under former Georgia line coach Neil Callaway. Friend served as a grad assistant under Mark Richt at Georgia in 2003-04.
- Key fact II: This line is not as inexperienced a bunch as it may appear. The projected starters have 85 starts between them, including 70 combined by Glenn and Jones. The problem is there is zero experience among the backups and both Glenn and Anderson are relatively new to tackle having gotten most of their action at guard.
- Key question: Will any of the incoming freshmen be asked to contribute? The Bulldogs signed five highly-touted linemen out of this high school, none of whom was initially counted on to play. Tackle Xzavier Ward is recovering from knee surgery and is a likley redshirt. But someone out of the group that includes C David Andrews, G/T Watts Dantzler, T Zach DeBell and G Hunter Long is going to have to help.
- Outlook: Poor. If Georgia manages to negotiate the season without a starter losing significant time to an injury — a virtual impossibility — this could end up being a serviceable SEC group. More than likely the Bulldogs are going to have to coach around this position as a liability.
- Your turn: What say you about the offensive line?

Dawgs are just like any other college team. They deal with transfers, injuries and academics. Good coaching and keeping the offensive line fit will prevent many injuries. Teamwork, talent and coaching will make this year a success! Go dawgs!

This response from a GT fan who also likes UGA. Delieve it or not.
From your report Chip, I gather that luck may be an important factor.
Bottom line: if there are no or not many serious injuries, the OL will be o.k. Is this assessment correct?

As a whole, we have done a poor job the last 6-7 years of judging ability, desire, and toughness of recruits at this position. We need lots more like Ben Jones and Cordy Glenn, both of whom will be playing on Sundays in the near future.

Clowney, Taylor, Robinson, Ingram and Sutton on that SC team are going to wreak havoc on this line. We may okay defensively but with AJ gone and a green OL I feel we are doomed against SC in the early part of the season. Oh, well.

The learning curve has definitly been speeded up for the young folks we have on the O line this year. If the WR’s and RB’s can step it up, this would help out the line a whole bunch. Less time having to hold the line of scrimmage means, less time getting your body battered, holding for a slow developing play or waiting on some WR to get open. If they can control the tempo a little, they can still be successful. Coach Firend will have to do a super job in this area. After the first two games, UGA’s schedule get a whole bunch easier, so they could still finish with a decent season.

@ tim scott and old time dog. Why are you guys posting??? The name is Theus and his brother is still at The Bolles School in Jax. As far as our line goes. Its going to be the same BS weve seen for the last 10 years. Sometimes during the games they will make great blocks but most of the time the RB will get stuffed and the QB will be running for his life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have a decent core but little if any depth. My hope is that Coach Friend will bring a new effort from this group we haven’t seen in a while. I to , as savannadawg said have seen way to many times when our RB’s got to the line they where just stuffed. Georgia has gotten away from the run and loves to go to the pass and it has effected our line play. We will be OK if we stay healthy, but get a couple of guys hurt, and we could struggle. I hoping the last 6-7 months under new S&C leadership will show up on the field.

Coach around the offensive line problems–in this league?? Thank God we don’t have to play LSU or Alabama and their D-lines.
O-line problems, receivers who haven’t done much and we’re depending on a freshman running back. Sure hope he can block.

Bobo has his work cut out because linebackers will be licking their chops at the average thin OL we have. Defenses will not have to worry about the running game because the only veterans are not playmakers and small. The passing game will be average.

One factor is that you CAN more easily coach, or specifically call, around a less than stellar line with a more experienced QB. This line will be no worse than the 2003 line that gave up a sack every series it seemed. Greene was more mature and could have never handled that his first year.
I can’t see them being any worse than last year. It is what t is. This is one of 3 or 4 things that were the main issues. Sounds like we haven’t fixed this one. We just cant have every one of them be a problem at that same time again.
Fortunately quite a few of our rivals have same questions at O-ine as well.

yet another reason we don’t have the right guy managing the program…poor personnel assessments and very weak OL recruiting. Don’t give me the injury excuse. Why isn’t Alabama encountering this? Think of all the 4 and 5 star OL we have brought in….wait, there are less than 5 or 6 in the Richt era. 7 wins folks. I can’t wait to say I told you so.

Hopefully some of the freshman will step up and provide quality back-up, although imo it is the one position where you really need to redshirt, even more then qb. A lot of these guys aren’t even taught the right blocking technique in high school, they’re taught to block like tech for a high school offense. For those saying searles saw the writing on the wall, he’s one of the main reasons there is writing on the wall. His offensive lines consistently underachieved every year, hopefully Friend has provided a new spark.

Chip, I’m going to go old school on you; hell, I’m even listening to James Brown @ the Apollo Theatre, 1962! But with a little luck, an offensive line can make it relatively intact through a season. Auburn’s 1972 team, the one Shug Jordan said was favorite, wasn’t given any respect from anyone preseason. After all, Sullivan and Beasley, Tommy Yearout, Tommy Banks, etc. were gone, but Terry Henley got three yards and a cloud of dust and AU went 10-1. The Tigers had their first team OL and that was pretty much it! If UGA’s OL can catch a break, and God knows they’re due, Georgia can have a great season.

Offensive lines woes is a bad way to begin a season. If the starting group has no significant injuries that cost any of them playing time, then the Dawgs should be OK. Some of the new guys will have to be able to offer rest for the starters.
….but, all it will take is one knee rolled on in a scrum to derail a promising season.
Good luck Dawgs.

When did Georgia Go away from the run, JB? They still attempted to run almost 60% of the time last year despite being pretty ineffective at it. (I thought they ran the ball too much last year) Same last year. Did they run it in 08, 07, 06, 05? What was the game or season that you determined that they had switched philosophies about attempting to run the ball in a play action offense?

Look up Ealey and King’s ypc, they are basically where Herschel’s were. If you don’t believe me, look it up. The problem is Bobo’s management and design of HOW to use the run and create mismatches and also what they do in practice. And the physical aspect has been lost as you say, no meaness or nastiness which has to come from the way they practice and strength and conditioning.

Hopefully, Richt has really studied offensive football and will incorporate some different things into his basic pro-set scheme this season – misdirection, some spreading of the field, hurry up offense, etc.
I know Altamaha said rules were changed after UGA was so successful with the hurry-up when we had Greene and Shockley running it, but Oregon sure used it a lot last season.
Offensive changes or not, Bobo himself can help the OL situation by making his play-calling less predictable.

This is nothing new here at UGA. Next year we really need to hit the JUCO area hard for 2-3 good linemen. Nonetheless it is what it is and it ain’t what it used to be. We will find out how good Will Friend is in his Freshmen debut. Look for Zack DeBell to get plenty of OJT. Kid is up to 290 lean pounds and is very quick for an offensive lineman. Pack on 10 more pounds and I think he will be able to hold his own this year.

The starting OL has a chance to be pretty good, IF they start getting some decent coaching and decide to become a run first-play action pass second-kind of team. If they get the coaching they’ve been getting, then they will be mediocre. Depth is definately a problem. None of the freshmen are physically ready to contribute. BTW run first teams are not only more physical, but have less OL injuries than pass first teams. Just saying.

Joey, we heard that with Knowshon and Thomas Brown being in the same backfield…..and nothing came of it. We heard that with using Orson Charles all over the field….and nothing came of it. There is a reason no other schools come after Bobo. You see coaches like the Stoops brothers, Dan Mullen, Charlie Strong, Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, Petrino in the past……all coordinators that were in high demand. Not Bobo. I think he is a really good bulldog and I am sure knows a lot of football but he is not an elite OC, the silence from other programs is all the proof you need.

For goodness sake, give the guys a chance to show what they can do before you condemn them to mediocrity. Anderson, Burnette and Glenn were outstanding recruits and the other two, Jones and Gates, have shown that they can play. Who knows what the backups can do, we’ll see. Of the incoming freshmen, only Dantzler is a possible contributor. The other guys simply aren’t physically ready to play in this league. If they stay healthy, this line will be fine. Keep an eye on Anderson on running plays, the guy is a true road grader. His pass blocking is the question.

The University of Florida one year I believe started 2-3 true freshmen OL right off the bat. This is the University of Georgia. We are talking about 8 guys who have all been in this system multiple years. We are talking about our OL being young? Hell they are all young, YOUTH cannot be and excuse as 117 NCAA teams have to battle through this. Coach Friend needs to find guys who have the hunger and desire to compete at a high level. I have a sneaky feeling that this o-line will be a lot better than we think. Maybe with AJ gone, Bobo/Richt will hopefully diversify the offense. Too much doom and gloom. I also think the new S&C program will help. From what I have read, Joe T. has been really pushing them to their limits. As for the losses, let’s be real. AJ harmon wasn’t going to make a big impact. I think Benedict was still another year away. Probably wanted another year to rehab. You have to move on. Maybe a couple JUCO lineman will help the depth next year. What ever it is! WIN OR LOSE! I agree that we are thin at OL, but I don’t agree with running the coaches out of town. I mean the coaches can’t win. If they work the players hard, then they are blamed for the injurys. If they don’t, they are blamed for our team being soft. And if you think they aren’t recruiting as hard as they can for the top players available, then you are not being realistic.

I suspect that if CMR knew that he would lose three OL that he was counting on for contributions/depth this year the recruiting effort would have allowed for more OLs (either HS or JUCO). But, who knew that 3 OL (one of which was a starter, one a serious competitor for starter, and one for back-up/contributor) would be gone before the first snap? Come on, haters, this is not the fault of the recruiting process. So what, now this is the coach’s fault? Gimme a break.
We all wish that the line was better/deeper but we got what we got and the challenge is for the coaches to make the best use of them and hope that they don’t get injured. The core group is “more than serviceable” IMO and let’s hope that the new coach can get more out of them than last year’s coach.

People keep posting that we don’t recruit enough OL and this problem is a result of that…, wrong: 1 starter went down to injury and 2 others who would’ve provided future depth left the program. Barring those unfortunate circumstances you have depth. I’m not going to get down on them and start crying in my beer like some. The coaches and current OL starters are fully aware they have to give the new guys a crash course, and they have 2 months to get stronger. With our depth at TE, we ought to use Artie Lynch on the OL, he’s nearly 300 now and strong as a bull. GO DAWGS!

Same old song and dance with Richt at the helm of the UGA program. UGA has been weak and has had no depth on the O.L. since 2002. Richt and his staff are terrible at evaluating and developing talent at every position, just happens the O.L. is where they fail miserably. I hate to say it, but it’s not just the O.L that has no depth. It’s the entire team. UGA has no playmakers at w.r, or r.b. Couple that with an O.L that want be able to block anyone, and you have a total disaster against quality defenses. On the defensive side of the ball, it is just as bad. No depth at L.B., D.L, corner, and especially safety. Don’t know how UGA is in this critical state. Oh wait, now i do, Richt knows what the hell he is doing. LOL!!

I agree with Chip’s assessment of the O-line and I think there are five key factors that will determine the team’s success regarding the O-line:
1) Protect Murray
2) Learn better blocking techniques
3) Protect Murray
4) Read & adjust to shifting defenses better
5) Wait for it……….Protect Murray
If Friend can add value to items 2 & 4 then that would be a big help to items 1, 3 & 5. Of course, the RBs being able to pick up blitzes effectively will be a big factor in the odd numbered items as well.

I just don’t understand it. Most of these guys have been playing on the offensive line every fall since they were 10-12 years old. As they grow, they play against other guys with the same amount of experience. How many thousands of times have they practiced and played, and blocked and blocked and blocked? And then every year we have to hear about “inexperience”. Every starter is over 300 pounds. And our line is going to be a weakness? Is whining about the line part of a coach’s job description?

Nobody knows how they will perform or whether they get through the season without any serious injuries. Last year the o-line was predicted to be very good. Well, obviously that was not an accurate assessment. This year they are predicted to not be so good. Who knows? Only time will tell.

Auburn’s QB Outlook – Poor – No Expereience
You could do this for just about every team in the SEC. Every team has to address issues from year to year, it’s College football. UGA will have to respond to the call.

A;so. those folks who are always saying things like we will win the SEC East blah, blah, blah, blah as nauseam just don’t seem to understand why the games are played. They are played to see who wins. Until they are played we don’t know who will win. Simply saying we are going to win does not mean anything except someone, usually without any real knowledge, hopes we are going to win. Remeber the Robert De Niro line: “Hope in one hand, s__t in the other hand and see which one fills up first.”

Two things to consider for UGA fans from a South Carolina native whe went to UGA.
1. USC has never had success. How will they handle the pre-season hype as the team to beat in the East. My bet would be not very well since they have never been in this position.
2. Major discipline problems with your starting QB is never good. I point back to #1. Garcia hasn’t handled his success very well.
Keep the faith Dawg fans.

The five starters listed for the O-line average 6′4″ and 329 pounds per man. That is enough beef to run the ball. Running the ball requires a mind-set of blowing up the man across from you. Mark Richt is a finesse coach. Vince Dooly would take this group and pound the D-line into submission.

If the o-line is suspect again this year, then they might have to go to the spread early and often…Murray ran it in H.S. and I venture to say probably did most of the team…starting off the year with Boise State and then South Carolina, CMR/CMB can not afford to fall behind again this year and get buried in the standings…adapt and improvise to what you have on the sideline

Chip, that’s a nice evaluation of UGA’s OL. The starters look good, but not much depth. You bring up a good point regarding the liklihood of injury to one of the starters in a game. But what about practice? Under normal game type preparations, Uga runs the same risk at practice. I honestly don’t think they can conduct normal scrimmages because of the risk of injury to a starter. Also, Uga loses a key motivational element that comes from depth, and that’s healthy competition for your position.. Richt and Bobo have managed to eliminate the most important factor in motivation: Competiton for your job. Really no excuse for a program such as Uga’s to be in this predicament. These injuries and academic issues were pre-existing, could easily be forseen, and should have been dealt with in a timely manner, and NOT by bringing in the 9th rated OL class in the Conference (per rivals). Richt and Bobo have a serious problem in addressing issues in advance. And incredibly, most of the athletes who could have created quality depth along the Offensive line are actually in state kids who are starting for you competitors. Chip, would you please question Richt on how this obvious problem will effect game preparation (namely, can they conduct normal scrimmages?), and why this problem was not headed off. when a reasonable evaluation could see it coming.

I was told that the team wanted to go for it, but CMR went off on players and said something like you couldn’t get it done the first time, so go sit down. Well, it appeared that the team lost their steam after that exchange, along with their confidence in CMR and the game. When CMR arrived in the SEC, he knew it to be a very, very physical league. Always has been. Your success starts up front and on the D line. Period.
He has not signed the guys that can make it really well, beyond a Clint Boling and that was luck. Boling come to UGA out of Chattahoochee HS where he was considered a good HS linemen and was probably 2 or 3 star at best. He diced on UGA over FLordia whefre his parents went to school. We got lucky with him.
No, Richt always pursues the 5 star O linemen like that Max Jean Giles kid from Miami or Trinton Sturdevant or such, or the 2 kids that left this year and the ones that left in other years and then, we end up scambling for help …………..year in and year out. It is our lack of O line coaching that is the cause of this. HC is responsible for this deficit, whether with Serels or Friend. The one good guys got gone early in CMR’s era.

This will be the case with your O-line. It’s borderline now, one more injury and it’s time to look forward to 2012. I’m going to share a little secret my friends you play in the SEC and score 30 points in a game….you should win the darn game…..period! Between having a new s&c coach and a new O-line coach, I can see why these guys would transfer, but that does not necessarily mean we will be any worse at the position. Do y’all know the incoming Freshmen will fare more poorly than Harmon, or Benedict would have? We don’t even know how well Benedict would have been able to play; given his rehab status.
We don’t have an O-line problem YET, and both those boys we’re backups, BUT if we have an injury, and he pupply replacement cannot tow-the-line, at that point we will have an issue.
Until then, it’s simply attrition, due to raising the standard. Quitters need not apply……..

This piling on Richt crap is just that…crap. If even 10% of the naysayers that claim ‘dog, or dawg’ loyalties here have ever even attended UGA…well I won’t kiss your a$$, but I’d be willing to bet not.
As for you Towers, just who in blazes do you think you are to label this OL a ‘liability’ before a single practice or snap has been taken? You got some kind of credentials that we don’t know about that can predict the future? Or are you just trying to yank on our, collective, chains. A ‘question mark’, yes…perhaps even a potential ‘weakness’, if and only if, certain things go wrong – you paranoid so-in-so.
As for the former OL coach, he never showed anything that I could see that made him so special, so we’re well rid of him…and as for last year’s loss to CF, sure, going for the FG on that first drive proved idiotic. I mean we drove down the field, virtually, at will and probably figured that we’d be back there again and again before the day was out…plus our OL hadn’t done the best of jobs moving most of our opponents in that situation, so they kicked. One could also argue that, hell, it’s a bowl game, why not go for it. It’s clearly a mindset formed by a season-long experience. Well that season’s over and we’re on to a new one with a new OL coach, another year’s seasoning, a new S&C program, a group of new, fresh-faced, quality athletes, a new determination, and, oh yeah, some of the most loyal fans any program could hope for (LOL).
So Towers, next time try not to see how quickly you can root out the trolls, or the naysayers, or the fair-weatherers, with your choice of adjectives…unless, of course, that’s what you’re paid to do – generate ‘clicks’ – in which case ‘it’s a profit deal’ and the American Way.

This is a different day and age in college football. Freshman can and do contribute significantly and effectively, even offensive lineman. Case in point, Gates for UGA. He did it as a true freshman. Somebody from the current crop of TF and RF will do the same. UGA will be fine on the OL. Harmon was horrible in pass protection and Benedict and Sturdivant were liabilities because of injuries. This group is the group that would have ended up getting the most time, regardless. If Justin Anderson plays well at RT, the Dawgs are in real good shape.

I agree with the majority about Richt’s poor personnel management with the OL. Just like he’s been padding his record with victories over non-SEC teams the past few seasons, he’s also padding his draft record with high profile QBs, RBs, and AJ Green while neglecting the linemen. This helped get Goff fired, but Donnan sure could recruit. Richt always has this problem.

JB, obviously we have had issues running the ball n the past 2 years, but I just find it to be less logical to argue that it can be traced to a sudden urge 2 yrs ago to inexplicable “go away from something that is working” in the middle of winning a ball game. I believe it has a lot more to do with not having a line, a back, and some adjustments that the other side has discovered would shut that down.
I honestly cannot remember a single game, where the running game was working fine, and we just decided to start throwing it, with no other factors. I’m sure somebody can point to some series where they questioned a pass here and there. Frankly I WAY more times questioned why we ran the ball.
Some folks say that Bobo is too predictable, and never creative, some folks say he is not conservative enough and goes to the pass too often. Personally I think he is just inexperienced and struggling to play call around what are some pretty obvious weaknesses in the team. Over time (not sure he is going to get that luxury here) he will outgrow that. More immediately, he better get that second part of the equation fixed and put a better team out there, which he has proven he can play call around.

We aren’t as bad at OL as it may sound. Sure if injuries happen we’ll have problems. But what kinda shape would SC be in it Lattimore got injured? What if?….yep everyone is in same boat injuries can break a season. We get past the first two games even at 1-1 and the OL has time to get some experience and grow. We get to the MS state game and then we’ll see how the rotation is working out with back ups then. Too much gloom and doom. I don’t care about the odds, stats of other teams winning more than the year before yadda yadda..I can point to every Soph QB CMR has had and shown you there stats. I can show you the UGA team before the 80 NC team. Past is past!! There is a reason they paly the games. Erk’s linemen were always too small, and they got it done!! lets see what Friend can do with his OL. Win or loose I’ll be puling for the DAWGS. Joey, Yes Oregon used it last year, very well. For completely different purposes. On a completely different type of offense. Doesn’t mean we can just emulate them. That’s like saying that since Alabama runs a fairly conservative, methodical offense….WELL, Oregon should follow suit, despite not being designed for it.
We only ever ran a hurry up when it was under different rules, because we tried to get our guys set and run a play before the defense could substitute. We didn’t do it to try to disguise our multi-faceted offense as Oregon does.
We did it to wear our the other line. We could sub quick and get set before they could react, or leave the boys in a few plays and just out-muscle. But NOW to run a hurry up, we have to leave our starting line in and wear them out or substitute player which we do not have, and hope their defensive line substitutions (which the new rules stops the play till they can) are just as thin. Which of those are you feeling good about?

I don’t think you can blame CMR, when 1 guy gets injured, 1 guy can not make it academically and the third guy, although he would not have played much this year, had his daddy telling him what he should do for the school and the program. If we had still had the two we lost that were experienced and would have contributed greatly, what or better whom would you have blamed then. I guess then it would be we don’t have any good receiver and our RB’s stink. We lost A.J. but in a way that may prove to be a half good thing, since now we will not build half the game plan for one guy. We have some quality young men that will do the job, not to mention an all SEC Te in charles. We lost Ealey, and I feel overall that was a good thing. I realize when he wanted to play, he was good but consistency and being a team player are equally as important. We have young talent at this position as well. C. King is capable of filling the role if and this has been a big if with him, he can keep his head in the game and I think he will do well this year, because he knows this is the last year he can show the NFL if he is a quality back. Crowell will need a few games to adapt to he speed of the D in the SEC, but there is no denying he has all of the physical tools needed to succeed. I suggest we all just wait and see how the season goes before we get rid of CMR and his staff. I believe UGA can win 9-10 games this year and come 2012, can compete for the SEC championship, if the young kids get to it and work their butts off.

You can’t coach around a bad OL. If the OL stinks (which it has for the past 3 years), then you can’t run the ball, and you can’t protect the QB. This is the one position where you cannot be weak and be an elite team. Therefore, if UGA is not an elite team this year (meaning 10 or 11 wins), then are we prepared to be a 7 to 9 win team. With the schedule UGA has, anything less than 10 wins is unacceptable. I don’t want to hear a bunch of excuses (injuries, youth, “ran into a buzz saw”, blah, blah, blah). Moderate improvement after 2 abysmal seasons won’t cut it anymore!

Meanwhile, I’m trying to discern just where you’re coming from. You seem to be an ‘on the one hand,,,then again on the other’ kind of guy. Very obvious that almost no one on this blog has ever played college ball, yet alone played college ball as an offensive lineman. The talent that UGA puts in the NFL at the offensive line position tells the story. Its not that there are no “older” players to put in on OL, its that most of the younger ones are better! Look at the roster! The red shirt sophmores at UGA are better than most senior starters at other Division 1 schools. I like the idea of playing younger atheletes, it means that you are in a good position for the future – ALWAYS! Coach Fiend took a tuba player from the band at his previous school and made him all conference. There is a reason that UGA did not make much of an attempt to keep coach Searels. He simply was not getting the most out the talent we had. I cannot see Texas line improving under him. I wouldn’t give up on the OL. Plenty of talent everyone just needs to be patient.
Another coach to keep in mind is Olvedotti with the linebackers. Coach Grantham finally is putting the pieces for his defensive staff together. This team will better than most people think. Freshmen can sometimes have huge impacts.

We only play 7-8 guys a year anyway.Harmon came in with Glenn and Jones…they started as true freshmen and are All Sec caliber players…Harmon played maybe 30 snaps in his career. Some kids just don’t make it.If Benedict still didn’t have feeling in his foot and ankle… do you really think he was going to play at all this year? It’s always gloom and doom with the OL.We started 3 freshmen and 2 Sr in 07.The two Sr weren’t as good as Glen and Jones are now and that year turned out OK.Last year that “terrible” OL helped set team records on Offense. They haven’t been dominant as was expected but they weren’t “horrible” either. For all the times they failed to get a yrd or an inch…they did help produce a bunch of TD’s too.I think they will be the same as most of the previous ones have…decent.

Chip,
It’s been a long time since the O Line was NOT a problem – even when they were highly touted.
Like last year Murray will have little time to setup a pass and running backs will have few holes through which to run.
It doesn’t look good to me.

Gary at 6:18: Keeping the linemen “fit” does NOT prevent “many injuries”. The majority of injuries to linemen are either from impact, and mostly knees. The fit part might have something to do with some of it, but it will have nothing to do with it when they get their knee rolled on by a teammate, etc.

Our OL starters will be fine, but lack of experience of those behind them is a liability. Every team has that problem to some degree. The real questions are how well will the entire offense be coached to offset other liabilities, and how well prepared will the players be to execute? Another season of lackluster offensive strategy and uninspired play is still a real possibility.

Well, this line cannot be much worse than the group that ended up playing tha majority of 2008. 3rd string LT and 3 freshman before it was over. Plenty of people still claim that we should have won 11-12 games despite that, so it shouldn’t be that big of a deal now.

Uga’s o-line is one or if the biggest question mark on the team. I like glenn at left tackle, gates at guard, ben jones at center and i like beane anderson but not at tackle i like him a guard much better because i don’t think he moves his feet well enough to play tackle. the line should be.
Glenn at left tackle
Anderson a left guard
Jones at center
Gates at right guard
And at right tackle and if he has a great spring practice to me it should true freshman Zach Debell.

AltamahaDawg, I didn’t mean that UGA should “emulate” Oregon. I was suggesting that Richt and Co mix things up some this season. When you aren’t dominate – you better get a little cagey. Uncertainty is a good thing.
I believe if “something isn’t broke, don’t fix it.” I don’t think Richt’s football program is broke, but I do believe one thing to be true. If Richt doesn’t add some more dimensions to the offense, as well as help Mike Bobo call plays to get and KEEP momentum better he has the last two seasons, it won’t matter if Crowell or AltamahaDawg carries the ball on Saturdays this season.
We don’t have a powerhouse offense, so I believe Richt had better get some SEC defensive coaches guessing again, or he will see another mediocre season. And that’s fine too. I watched every miserable minute of last year’s Liberty Bowl, and I’ll watch every minute of this season’s Dawgs.

And I’m with you on that. Let’s add some new dimensions. (That does not include me running the football). I believe a big part of that has to do with having a QB gain the experience to recognize the opportunities. My guess is that our playbook already has more dimension than we could ever possible run, but it’s a matter of resources.
All I was addressing was the no huddle. Just doesn’t seem to be a good option to me given our O-line situation. However, I wouldn’t be surprised if they break huddle quicker every now and then. Seems like they even did that a few times last year on down and inches.

If not, time for him to step down. But I say this…We will be hard pressed to find a coach that will right the ship as fast as CMR did when he came to UGA. By the looks of all the blogger comments on AJC sports, especially when it involves UGA Football, it appears that the AJC’s marketing approach is working. “If it bleeds then it leads”.
It’s the world we live in today. Internet. TV. SEC TV. Facebook. Chat rooms. Email boards. We are information rich, but we are communication poor.
You can speculate all of you want regarding the season. Who will win? Who will lose? Fact is, each team must “line-up” and play each other for 4 quarters. It takes execution. It takes game-planning. And, it takes, above all, mental toughness.
Can’t wait ’til we “see” what will happen instead of letting all of these “arm-chair” quarterbacks and coaches deciding the fate of the OL before they’ve had a chance to prove themselves. Pathetic.

Herschel said it best, they have to come together as a unit, not as individuals, trust in the abilities of your teammate, and be accountable to each other. I personally am not worried about the offensive line this year, providing they stay healthy but I do understand the concern.
I hope the running backs play outstanding and hopefully the wide receivers will come of age. I believe the defense is in good hands and the guys they have will make a positive impact this year.
I do believe Coach Bobo needs to open it up a bit more and play too the talent he has on offense and give the team a chance to do what they do best. Be more creative and a lot less restrictive on the players. I’m convince most of the other teams know his tendencies in play calling and pretty much understand what he will call before it’s called. If you want an example what creativity and proper use of talent can do for a team , look unfortunately what Florida did to Georgia last year.
Georgia should have won that game but it was lost because Florida was more creative and used their players to their abilities and skill sets and Georgia stayed in the same old method of doing things, relying on hope and prayer that something would happen to turn the game into Georgia’s favor and it never did .
Best of luck to Georgia… GO Dawgs… A Georgia fan first and always!!!!!!!!

There are certain time periods when you can sign recruits. If not teams could sign ringers halfway through the season and a div. II player could sign in Div. I halfway through the season if he had gotten over looked early in his career. For some teams it is also the scholarship limit as well. 85 player limits usually work pretty good, but there are always circumstances that jump up that you can’t plan for. UGA’s OL backups just need some experience and it looks like they will get it a little sooner than planned.

They are always saying Georgia is thin on the offensive line. They were talking about it when Herschel was there. I remember someone saying if Walker had Southern Cal’s line how unbelievable he would be. Then about half those linemen at Georgia went on to the NFL. They judge this by the experience. Georgia has a very talented group of linemen. A third string guy at Georgia would start many places. Somewhere talent trumps experience. If Georgia mixes it up with the run more next year which I can’t imagine they won’t these guys will be healthier and Georgia’s results will be better. Nothing wrong with Georgia talent and if there was all they have to do is decide this is what they want to recruit and it will happen. No team in the SEC controls its own destiny like Georgia.

Mark Richt has said since his fateful Macon Bulldogs’ Meeting 28 April 2011 that his biggest disappointment has been, not the way underperforming OL and not the way under-talented secondary, and not the non-existent fullback this 2011 season, but the tailbacks. 28 April none of them had shown Mark Richt that any of them were worthy of starting.
# 72 in the nation at 1st Downs 2010 and we played 8 cupcakes, losing to 2 of them and to all 5 teams who did finish in the AP Poll Top 25, what this football program lacks in its pass-happy offense is a commitment to the run. Oh, sure, Aaron Murray runs the football 8 times a game, every game, stealing 8 carries from the tailbacks every game – and averaging Less Than 2 Yards a Carry ( 1.9 ), but this failed offense is mostly failed because we have not, do not and will not run the football with a featured tailback. Look at the Top Running Backs in The SEC going into this season, and you will see that this, not a pass-happy offense, is what has led to 5 Consecutive SEC BCS Consensus National Championships and 7 of the 12 BCS NC not vacated by cheating.
This OL cannot turn out well because we don’t run the football, but rely upon only a pass-happy Conference USA type Offense in The SEC. This is why, in 1 of the nation’s weakest divisions of any conference – over the last 5 years now, we are 13-12 – and hoping and Praying that we win game 2 this season, or Mark Richt will not have a winning record in his own weak division (only had 1 team any good these last 5 years and now they are weak too) – not a winning record in his weak division over then that day these last Six (6) seasons.
Run the football. All we talk about the tailbacks, is that they cannot BLOCK.

UGA’s recruiting per position is lacking in the OL. The WR and QB position debth is overwhelming while the OL will have to struggle to put up a two deep line without shifing some first teamers to other positions when a sub is needed. That is why the Offense tires in the fourth quarter. Plus scoring so quickly puts the defense on the field longer than it should be. Last year the defense was on the field at least 45 minutes longer than the offense the whole year. So even if we are in top Joe T. shape for the fourth quarter. If we do not control the clock on offense it may not mean anything to be in top notch shape. Hope I am wrong but Offense needs to control the time of possession to win 14 games. It will not happen as long as we have such a high powered passing game.

See you later folks. I found a place where people actually stick to the topic of the blog, and make sense. You all can have fun insulting each other. Some would benefit greatly by doing some solid analysis though, and substantiating their statements. That is not going to happen very often on an AJC blog.

I’ve seen alot of BULLDOG teams through the years with a young Oline do just fine when chemistry is there and players decide to step-up and make some plays. Yes Georgia has some problems, but not too big to overcome with some “team not me” attitude. We have the strongest TE stable in the country , that should go along way to shoring up our Oline. Something tells me the chemistry is back in Athens this year………..Time for some big time pay-back!…………GO DOGS!! GATA……..RED

Attitude is back ? That is why 10 players have transferred out in the last year ?
Big-time year 2010 ? You mean we are going to get on the national stage at the end of the year in a bowl game and beat a team who finishes in the Top 10 of the AP Poll ? That would be the 1st time Mark Richt did that. His 3-9 vs teams finishing in the AP Poll Top 10 shows only 3 wins in 12 tries against such teams, and all 3 of those years he Lost 4, Lost 3 and Lost 4 games. In addition, in 10 years Mark Richt has lost to 10 teams who did not finish even in the AP Poll Top 25.
Pay-back would be to (1) get on the national stage & for the 1st time ever Mark Richt then beats a teams who finishes in the AP Poll Top 10, while (2) not also losing to a team who does not end up in the AP Poll Top 25.
Anything less than that, say 10-3 – worse than 10-4 meaning 6 consecutive seasons of not even playing The SEC Championship Game – is no pay-back. It is more of the same which is 21 Losses over the last 5 years, averaging in Excess of 4 Losses per season; and Mark Richt if he does not beat South Carolina in Week 2, will have then that day Not a winning record over the last then that day 6 seasons in his own Weak Division – a division which only has had 1 team I point out over the last 5 years, and now that team is Down too.

Michael,
Right.
Give Mark Richt two (2) more years, before this up-coming season, even starts.
New heights here.
Previously, Bulldog fans said to ourselves : Wait until next year.
Now, that Mark Richt has been exposed as incapable of hiring anyone ever on his staff
Now, that Mark Richt has been exposed as incapable of any kind of motivation
Now, that Mark Richt has been exposed 13-12 vs SEC East last 5 years
Now, that Mark Richt has been exposed as # 2 All-Time in Fulmer Cup Standings
Now, we ask
BEFORE THIS SEASON EVEN STARTS
wait
until the year
AFTER THIS YEAR.
Yeah, right.
What will change after this season ?
Go ahead.
You can say it :
NOTHING.

Control the clock is key. We have a projected starting O-line of 6′4″ and 329 pounds per man. If coach Joe T is doing what I think is going on in the weight room, we should push a few people around this year. Running the ball may not be sexy, but it will keep the other O off the field – provided we can make 1st downs.

This is the result of poor recruiting and allowing other SEC schools accumulate starting linemen w/ the state of GA ties; also, the result of a poor conditioning program; the result of CMR hanging on to poor coaches may cost him his job; he’s got to “Win, Baby, Win”!!! “You Snooze, You Lose”
And finally a side note, UGA has done a poor job of securing OL in this present recruiting season: 1) Jessemen Dunker, another top OT with the state of GA ties, was handled incorrectly and has committed to FL; Vadal Alexander, the top OT in the state, does not have UGA in his top 5!!!!; and finally, Avery Young, with the state of Ga ties, mentioned in a recent article that CMR has not come to see him; he is the top OT in the state of FL; OL should be a priority, and we are not treating it that way!! So dissappointed; again, “You Snooze, You Lose”!!!!

This is what Mark Richt has recruited and signed for his recruiting classes in order starting with this 2011 signing class ranked not in the Top 5 by Scout.com but around here it is the Dream Team.
He either signs way more than an entire 2-Deep OL in two classes or signs no one of consequence. It is feast or famine around here on the OL under Mark Richt. It is all he has ever done here. I call it bubble-recruiting the OL by Mark Richt every single solitary year.
There is no way that this OL on his Dream Team is any good whatsoever for what we needed to fix the issues he has put us in on his own on our OL every single year he has been here.

Gates was overlooked by Georgia until the last minute. Now he is a major key to the line. They won every game that he started last year!. He is a great person and will develop with this line. We need to be in good condition, He was originally redshirted and worked his butt off to earn a spot. 3-0 when he started!

Every year they talk about the O Line being a liability, and every year we come out avearage. The only times they line costs us big time is when it is supposed to be one of our strong points.

Thunder Dome!!!!
This Sept. 3 in Atlanta, we Georgians (and Dawg Fans) have the opportunity to make a statement.
This may be the most pivotal game we play in deciding our outcome this season. Even if we were to win out the remainder of our schedule and win the SEC championship (the best you could hope for after a loss in the opener), we would not play in a National Championship if Boise remained undefeated, or anybody else for that matter, thus ending the SEC streak with the title game. Well this just can’t happen. We must win. Not because we think we should because we are the bigger program from the SEC and that should be enough to win. Not because we think we can play in a National Championship if we do. Our toughest games will be still to come. It is not because they think they will destroy us since they beat Va Tech last year right before James Madison did and “this isn’t the same team we beat in 2005”. It is because… THIS IS OUR HOUSE. THIS IS IN OUR STATE, IN OUR CAPITAL. THIS IS OUR COCA~COLA. THAT IS OUR DAMN CHICKEN SANDWICH. Do they even have Chic-fil-a in Boise?
When Boise St comes to the Georgia Dome to face us, we the fans have a responsibility to do our part to help our team. If you have ever been to the Dome you know how loud it can be. It is our job to make the walls crumble from our thunderous roar!!!!!!!!! Anytime the Boise offense is on the field it is our job to make as much noise as you’ve ever made. STAY ON YOUR FEET between plays still SCREAMING with all your might. STOMP THE GROUND and CLAP YOUR HANDS. SHAKE YOU KEYS. Bring those CRYING BABIES that you always bring to restaurants. Take off your belts, fold them in half, hold both ends, move your hands in then pull away making the belt pop. Try it, pretty loud. I don’t care if you wear tap shoes. We might take some heat for it if we all showed up in tap shoes, but that would make a ton of noise. Just sayin…
The point is we help win games too. We help motivate our kids to sell out body and mind for us and we strike fear and confusion into the other team. Though our part is nothing to what the players’ and coaches’ roles are, we must still show up prepared and ready to give our all, just like we expect from the team every Saturday. I don’t care if the score is 100-0, we don’t quit making noise or leave early. I want the TV announcers to show the noise meter at the Dome showing new records. Noise can cause miscommunication with play calling, unheard check-offs or audibles from the QB or sidelines, missed kicks, penalties, and turnovers. It can strike fear into the other team and kill momentum. We don’t need to take our feet off the gas, on the field or in the stands, till the game is over and we get that chicken dinner.
I WANT THAT CHICKEN DINNER!!!!!!!!
Then I want to eat chicken again the next week.
Don’t let me down Dawg Fans.
Don’t let our team down.
We will only become champions with each other.
