Redshirt freshman OL Brent Benedict leaving UGA for ‘personal reasons’

Georgia’s already-precarious situation on the offensive line just got more precarious.

Benedict

Benedict

Brent Benedict, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Jacksonville and a former five-star recruit, left the team due to “personal reasons,” head coach Mark Richt said in a news release on Sunday. Benedict (6-foot-5, 312-pounds) was slated to back up Chris Burnette at right guard. He signed as a tackle.

Benedict did not return calls and texts seeking comment. Richt, who just returned from a mission trip to Honduras, was not available to comment.

Benedict was medically cleared this spring after a two-year rehabilitation of a major knee injury that occurred his senior year at The Bolles School. Indications are there has been some differences over how much and what kind of off-season training he should be doing as he prepared for his first active season on the field.

Georgia is now down to 13 scholarship offensive linemen, five of whom are true freshmen who just arrived on campus (not including Nathan Theus of Jacksonville, who signed as a long snapper). Incoming freshman tackle Xzavier Ward is also expected to miss the season with a knee injury.

Georgia already had a major reshuffle of the offensive line when starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant went down with his third major knee injury this past spring and tackle A.J. Harmon transferred to Alabama State. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, who was listed as third-string left guard, will likely shift over to right guard.

Benedict’s departure is the second interruption of what had been a quiet offseason for the Bulldogs. A report out of Columbus on Sunday indicates there could be some eligibility questions for starting linebacker Jarvis Jones and five-star basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

As long as these guys remain healthy, nothing else matters. Sorry for the kid to have to leave the team, but these are the 5 guys we need. They’ll do fine and we’ll be fine.

He hasn’t even played a game for UGA. It’s not like we lost a starter. Depth sure but it’s not like his leaving leaves a huge gap in our offensive line. Don’t jump off a cliff dawg fans! We’ll be fine. Good luck to the kid though.

I agree with CJJScout, these kids don’t want to work in order to become champions. They expect teams to lie down and let them beat them and then go win a title. It doesn’t work that way. You have to outwork your opponent if you expect to win. Winning an SEC title, or national title doesn’t happen during the season, offseason conditioning and lifting and getting your mind and body ready for the season is what wins you championships. These kids don’t want to work. Ealey, Harmon, and now Benedict left because they just don’t want to work but that’s ok. The ones that remain here, and that get through all the work, will be the ones sporting the ring.

@CJJScout,

I agree with you. There has to be more to the story. Why in the world would you leave because there’s a disagreement on how hard you should be working during the offseason. If that’s the case, then there’s no way I can see him going to Bama. Saban would never put up with that attitude. He would be gone in a NY minute if he took that attitude there. Again, there has to be more to the story.

This kid tears his knee up in high school. No body expects he’ll ever be able to play again. Richt, and UGA, showed class and honored his scholarship. Now that it looks like he’ll play again, he bolts because he doesn’t agree with the workouts? Give me a break. Sounds like an ungreatful spoiled brat. If I was his daddy, and this is the feal reason he left, I load his butt up, drive him back myself, see that he apologizes to Richt and everyone else associated with the football team, have him beg to be allowed back on the team and take a belt to his big backside for ernbarassing me and his family. You give your word, you keep it. Richt and UGA kept theirs.

granger35,

Good post! I do remember something to that effect that Richt would honor his scholarship offer even after he was injured. Now this kid is leaving because he doesn’t agree with the workout drills? Sounds like he needs a good old fashion butt whupping. I tend to believe that the team doctor would have put a stop to any workouts that he thought would re injure his knee. I suffered a torn MCL 2 years ago and I can tell you that my knee has responded very well to the rigors of physical training and I’m 47 years old and OBTW, I’m a Marine. If his father is involved in this decision and it’s based on workouts, then shame on him.

Weasely move on the part of this Player, CMR stuck by him when he had major injuries in HS when many/most other HCs would have dropped him and moved on to the Next Recruit, because of this this SA got 2 “free” yrs. of education at school like ug2 when he could have found himself at a JUCO or at the lower level of NCAA CFB.

He “owed” CMR a better fate than this given the investment CMR made in him at a time when many other HCs would have turned their backs on him, HCs like Nick Satan for example.

Nerve damage in his foot to the point that he still didn’t have any feeling in part of it sounds pretty serious to me.I don’t know the whole story but maybe he didn’t like what he was being told about his playing prospects this year at UGA.We don’t know if his dad thought he was being worked too hard or not…maybe he didn’t think his injury was healing the way it was expected.

Why doesn’t everyone wait and find out what all the specifics are before they accuse the coaching staff or our S&C program of being a problem…I’m sure we will get the story in time, so at this time why not just wish the yong man well whatever path he chooses…Amazing how the idiots come out with all this rumor and attacks on our program when a kid chooses to leave…Keep in mind this young man suffered a serious, serious knee injury and the fact remains whatever school he was at this would have been an issue..Is this a blow to our team…yes, most definately, but it also opens up opportunities for others to step up…I will say this however, if the dawgs can’t convince some talented recruits to come to Athens, then we do have some problems with recruiting as far as interior lineman go…go dawgs

I say GOOD DAMN RIDDANCE. We gave this quitter a scholarship when nobody else wanted him after he torn up his knee up in high school. The mainstream opinion was he would never play again. CMR and UGA showed class and honored his scholarship. His response now that it looks like he’ll play again is he bails out because he doesn’t want to put in the work to be a winner. He better hit the trail back to Florida because his character issues will prevent him from getting a job in this state. I’m in a hiring position and my company screens out these low character guys. A man or woman that quits on his or her team when the times get tough will quit on his company also.

They said “Oh man, we just got through the first phase and we’re not looking forward to the second phase.” But they at least said it with a smile and the demeanor it takes to work hard and win championships.

Benedict may have been a 5-star recruit, but for Richt to still honor Benedict’s scholarship and let him come to UGA after getting his knee blown out in high school and Benedict turns on him (and the program) like this is disgraceful. Good riddance.

@Dawgs,

After suffering through a knee injury, it is always instinctive to think that you’re going to re injure it. Every little thing seems to make you worry because you’re not confident that it’s completely healed. This is where the team doctors come into play. If they have medically cleared him to play, then he’s cleared to workout as well. I’m fairly confident that Richt would not just let this kid leave on this note without first chatting with the team doctor and getting his opinion. If the doctor says that he’s good and the kid decides that he still does not want to do the workouts, then his only choice is to leave. This is not on CMR. He has been more than fair and accommodating to this kid.

A few months ago it was reported that there seemed to be lingering nerve damage to Benedict’s leg.At that time I heard he was doubtful for this year because it wasn’t improving. He may think he can heal better at home or in a program that doesn’t demand the rigor’s of the SEC. Either way he doesn’t want to end up like another Sturdivant where he sits around 6 years and 3 operations latter an NFL career is only a dream. If he want to take it easy another year which may help get rid of the nerve damage I support his decision 100%. We are talking about NERVE damage. His decisions now will determine what quality of life he has in the future. If there is any nerve damage he wasn’t going to be very effective any way and CMR would probably not have played him very much if at all.
Any DAWG fans that would jump to the conclusions raised here by some are either 12 year old that have no business on a blog that need mature adults or they are insensitive jerks that need to find another team. They also have one of the best running backs in the Conference at Back up Linebacker! For Richt and Bobo to basically neglect what was going on on the offensive line and proceed to bring in the 9th rated offfensive line class in the CONFERENCE (per rivals) is criminal. Snakebit? Nah, my belief is good planning and hard work equal success. Let’s hope some of the changes we’ve seen lead to better planning and a better work ethic. If so we should see some of the result this year. We’re hearing a lot of stuff from Athens, but haven’t we heard the same type stuff every year? As for Benedict, I agree with the sane here, give it some time and the truth will present itself, not that it will change anything.

The first thing Saban did when he got to UA, and feel free to fact check me, is start recruiting monster lineman. Nothing happens without them. For some reason Richt hasnt fielded a decient O-line in several years. The party is at my house when Mcgarity fires him. I just prey he has the sense to hire Kirby Smart.

How many of you so called Dawg Fans have ever played college football; how many has ever had “major” knee surgery….and weigh 300 pounds while rehabing? How many know what “personal reasons” means? Did you really read the article…..it said “indications”… which means speculation. And for those who called this kid gutless…..why don’t you stand toe to toe with this kid and tell him that….then lets see who is gutless?
Also noticed we must have a couple doctors on here, since they know how long it takes for someone else’s injury to heal…..and exactly what the kids doctor told him when he was cleared to play.’
If you’re a real fan, rather than loud mouth, you would wish this kid the very best regardless he does…..looking for a great season!

The word I here from someone in the know is that the damage was very severe when he tore his knee up and that he has a “dead foot” where the foot just kinda flops down with no control over the movement of the foot. That something like this is very difficult and takes a long time to rehab. So CMR did the right thing when they offered him a scholarship and did the right thing to honor that and give him a chance to play.

Had an inkling all was not well with him due to the information the AJC posted on him while discussing the offensive line. He he tore his anterior cruciate ligament, posterior cruciate ligament, meniscus and hamstring all at once. And apparently he is still suffering from nerve damage. UGA has been so desperate for Offensive Line help over the past two or three years, it’s no wonder that they honored his scholly. UGA was likely praying for his recovery and offering him every therapy in the book so that he could help that MISERABLE O-line.

Richt will get Benedict back if some coach has not pushed the kid too far… The deal with th Carver players should be nothing much. Missing a couple games maybe. Hopefully Jarvis will miss only one and be eligible to play this year and not have to sit waiting on the NCAA to make a determination. He had plane rides it appears that had NOTHING to do with anything with football but AAU basketball or whatever. So maybe he gets nothing if its not related to football in any way. I dont see any big deal with either issues. No school involvement, just AAU guys spending money on things that they should not have. It has been a Parks and Rec scandal going on down here for awhile. The former mayor ordered the police dept. to investigate that dept. and this is part of what was uncovered in improper spending of taxpayer money. So it seems to be splitting hairs on the NCAA eligibility or rules breaking if you ask me. But you know the NCAA, anything they get a whiff of must be a violation is some way. This seems very minor to me though. Cell phone bill for a basketball players mom(from a Nike sponsored league” and a trip from the same basketball league that had nothing to do with football, not college basketball whatsoever. I guess Jarvis was in college at the time but was Pope? The NCAA regulating AAU(Nike) basletball also? Damn….

Leaving the team for personal reasons could mean a number of different reasons for leaving, and time will tell what those reasons were.
Wish this kid the best wherever and whenever he gets a chance to play.
Some reports whenever Benedict was recruited questioned whether or not he would be able to play football again.
His scholarship was offered before he injured the knee so Richt kept his word by honoring it. All who blame Richt and UGA should keep this in mind.
Hope all works out well for Benedict, having ligament damage is hard enough to overcome but recovering from it and nerve damage both are extremely difficult.
Getting well should be this young man’s number one goal, not football.

Richt kept his word by giving this guy a scholarship after the knee problem. I am sure there were other offers on the table coming out of HS for this 5 Star recruit…..including the injury. Yes UGA was, and still is desperate for good Offensive Linemen, just like every other college program in the U.S., that’s your foundation for a winning program.
Again, in this article he left for “personal reasons”…….do you know what his personal reasons are, or what they really were? The word “indications” are also used in the article….meaning they’re speculating. Why don’t you people leave this kid alone and keep your nose in your own household……and by the way, you idiots talking about how “this is a business”, you’re insane….it’s still college athletics, regardless how much money is involved and I’m dure none of these kids aren’t paying income tax on their schlorships.

Yo-
I don’t get it. Why should UGA give someone with a bum knee a full athletic scholarship? Oh, you say Preacha Man had offered him a scholarship before he blew out his knee, and since he is such a good Christian Man then it is right to go ahead and give the kid the scholarship. Do you believe this? If you do, then you and whatever money you may have are in danger of being parted by any of several million schemers.

Listen up. We need to change our attitudes if you want UGA to return to championships. This kind of weak crap is not conducive to winning. If the fellow messed up his knee and can’t play football, then we shouldn’t be offering him an athletic scholarhip. And since knees are the weak links to offensive linemen, why would our three million dollar a year CEO Markt Wrecked be recruiting damaged goods anyway? This is clearly bad judgment. But everyone is mesmerized with da Preacha Man. Do you want a preacher or a coach? Well, right now you have a preacher, not a coach. We will not win until we have a coach, and a highly dedicated motivated one to boot whose vision is return to GLORY. Get on board, or get on the loser bus.

The bigger picture here is the quality of life after football. This kid has a difficult decision to make whether to contiune playing FB and risk permanent injury the rest of his life or stop playing altogether. His knee injury in HS caused some nerve damage in his leg so this is more serious than the normal knee rehabilitation. Kudos to CMR for honoring his committment to Brent. He and his family lost his older brother who died after his senior year in college waiting to be drafted.

It is real easy to set at your computer and judge what is going on when you really don’t know the whole story. I wonder how many of you actually played college FB and realize the emotions that these athletes go through. I can tell you from experience, it ain’t HS football! If he can’t do the workouts, he won’t play anyway. So this is a no win situation for him

It would appear that no one on this blog knows exactly why this kid wants to transfer. It doesn’t appear though that it will stop the haters from once again posting the same old stupid crap they always post. Now if it has to do with a personal matter, it will make these clown haters, once again look silly, but they will still spout off about something they know nothing about.
For all any of us know, it could have something to do with a family matter. Maybe, his injury has gotten too far into his head, and it is strictly a mental thing. Maybe he doesn’t think he can work in the S and C program because mentally, he is still injured in his mind. Maybe he doesn’t want to ride the pines for another year. Maybe he just doesn’t have the mental toughness to rehabilitate at this level.
No one knows the full story now, but responsible adults withhold their judgment until we all do. Haters can give up on the line of, It is CMR’s or coach T’s fault. Try not to make yourselves look so darn stupid and simple minded. All anybody knows is what this article has told, and that is not much in the way of explaining this young mans actions. If he does decide to play football gain, I would think it would be at a lower division school, but I don’t know anything more than the rest on here. I just hope, he is doing what is best for him, and that he can reach his potential, if he decides to continue, at the place he choses. I would be willing to bet, that it will not be with another SEC school though, since I don’t see any of them willing to take on a prospect that has basically been sitting for two years and may still have physical problems. Good luck young man, what ever your future holds for you.

I think Benedict’s father has the same concerns you all should have. Does Joe T. and Kasay have the credentials and qualifications, including the educational background, held by strength and conditioning directors at competing institutions. And if not, why are they in the positions they’re in? And, frankly, will this lack of the latest certifications put the athlete at risk of injury, or slow his rehab and recovery from existing injury? Benedict’s father’s concerns are legitimate.

S. GA DAWG 88. This is the same stuff some other dawg was saying about Richard Samuel, and giving it as a reason he was moved from running back to backup inside linebacker. Somewhere along the line you guys need to look at your staff, including strength and conditioning, and determine if they’re really qualified to be in the positions they’re in? Kasay and Tereshinski are former Uga players. Bobo is a former player who is married to Barbara Dooley’s niece. Are these people truly the best and most qualified for the positions they hold, or are that in place because of loyalties, connections, etc. If it’s because of the latter. Richt is cheating the entire Bulldog nation, and more impotantly, the players and their families who trust that his hires will be with their interests considered foremost. Keep in mind Richt and Bobo would have played the greatest combo QB in THE HISTORY OF COLLEGE FOOTBALL at tight end. These two are at it again with Richard Samuel. There comes a point where you have to take explanations coming out of Athens with a grain of salt. They’re self serving.

So, we have the former City of Columbus Parks & Recreation Director Tony Adams and at least 2 others that have been ARRESTED, for using MUNICIPAL funds to pay for the personal travel expenses of a UGA-bound recruit, Jarvis Jones.

It’s noteworthy that Mr. Adams did not use PERSONAL funds.
He used MUNICIPAL funds.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Very Very Bad.

On November 18, 2010, the same Columbus newspaper wrote that Mr. Adams
and Herman Porter were dimissed after it was discovered that Mr. Adams
had “mis-appropriated” $200,000.

Folks, this isnt about $800 airfare and $200 cell-phone bill.

It’s about a $200,000+ “slush fund” operated by former employees of the
City of Columbus Parks & Recreation Department.

So, where did $200,000 go ??

The better better question is: To WHOM did $200,000 get paid to ??

So, whats the REALLY INTERESTING link in all this ??

Here it is: Money was used to pay airfare for UGA-bound recruit, Jarvis Jones.

Anyone want to guess WHERE Jarvis Jones played high school football ??

Thats right: Jarvis Jones played for Dell McGee at Carver-Columbus High School.

Yes, that UGA-designated hot-bed of un-eductated football talent, Carver-Columbus.

Folks, this story has been building for the past 12 months.

The R-E-A-L-L-Y dangerous question that will be asked is this:

Have there been ANY OTHER UGA-bound recruits from Carver-Columbus
that have ALSO received illegal benefits from this “slush fund” ??

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Folks, this Columbus-Slush Fund story has M-A-S-S-I-V-E implications
for UGA as it unfolds.

Stay tuned.

…and let the unravelling begin. The JJ news and now another OL leaves. What’s next? I wonder if the new OL coach has anything to do w/Harmon and BB leaving? Can’t go into a new season losing folks left and right like this. Excluding Jones, who knows what will happen there, loss of OL player to already thin ;position is not good at all. All this will eventually take its toll.

It is a known fact that a SEC team has to have 7 to 8 good offensive linemen ready to play each saturday. Most teams dress between 10 to 15 OL for games, and unless the game is a blowout or non conference game 8 to 9 will play either on offense or special teams.

With that being said and the average college team in conference will lose one to two players for portions of games during the season due to injury, it seems more and more likely that some of these young guns will need to step up for Coach Friend or it is going to be a long long season. The one good caveat is the first game is in the atmosphere controlled environment and that should allow some of these kids to get on the field. The second game against USC will be the one that test the dogs and with USC running multiple schemes and pressure it will be a day for the OL to grow up or it will be a long long day in Athens.

The reason this is now a UGA story is that he is now on campus at UGA, and he was considered to be a leading player for UGA this fall. If previous precedence is used he will more than likely be ineligible for several games this fall. If I were on the Defensive coaching staff at UGA, I would just plan on not having JJ until later in the season. Fox can expect to lose his guy for a few games this fall and expect him back on the court in January 2012.

The bigger issue comes with what other information is out there that is not being reported? Does it run deeper and effect more players at many different schools? I guess time will tell.

Personally I’m not a fan of JoeT’s and staff’s lack of credentials, although I don’t really know this I assume it is true given their background. However, I don’t think the sports medicine staff would allow a player to participate in a strength and conditioning program that was unsafe for him. UGA’s sports medicine staff, a long with all sports medicine staffs at that level, are really conservative when it comes to injury management. Which is perfectly understandable, all these athletes have some chance to play at the next level, if you mess up you can cost a kid millions of dollars.

Because of this I think either the injury messed him up in the head too much that he couldn’t get over it, or he just didn’t want to do what everybody else was doing and thought because he had been injured he should get away with it.

Pat Dye said it best ………… you have to have the wide bodies up front to compete in the SEC. Mark Richt knew this when he first arrived at UGA and this is one of my biggest complaints about Richt. He has not gone out every year and signed the beef and if he did, they end up with bum shoulders, knees and backs. We sign the skinnny”project wide outs” and they take two or three or four years to grow and develop and we end up lately 6-7 or 5-7. We alos go after incorrigible backs that are worthless when the heat is on.

This is the year. If he only has ONE O linemen ……………. he must win.

I don’t know why he left. I’m not going to guess. Best of luck kid. We adapt, we over come. Coach T doesn’t have a long list of credentials to coach S&C true. But what would that list look like? Did the Auburn OC have a long list of credentials? I am not judging as Iam not there. I hear from 2 players on the team that say its going well and many of them are in the best shape of there life. Most are in better shape than last year. We’ll see when the 4th qtr gets here. We’ll really see in the SC game. I am not worried about the things that are unchangeable at Athens right now. Who will step up? We’ll see. I am worried about losing J. Jones for a few games. Especialy if its the first 2. Vasser looked good in the spring game though and will fill the spot if Jones can’t play. Getting a good pass rush will be important playin those blue bellies. Have heart though! We will have a very impressive D line and have signed some really big kids last year for the O line. Watts is a big kid that can move well. I think we’ll see him playing very soon no matter who else is at UGA. less than 70 Days and then we’ll know about the Oline, secondary, running game, S&C etc….GO DAWGS!!

You state the illegal funds were used to pay for UGA recruits air fares. Think about this for a second. He made four trips to Los Angeles, not Athens. If memory serves me correctly, USC is in Los Angeles, not UGA. Since he did not sign with UGA, at the time of these alleged flights, and was not signed by UGA until two years later, I don’t see how that equates to a UGA recruit. Yes, he did sign on this year, but he came to UGA asking to come here, after it appears that USC was going to be harshly penalized for Reggie Bush play for pay. UGA decided they could use his talents so put him on scholarship. Two years removed from his free flights to LA A Land. If the NCAA gets into the fray, which it appears they could, since he hasn’t been directly accused of taking these flights as not official recruiting visits, I am not sure how much they can do about it anyway. Circumstantially, one plus one equals two, but proving it might be another question. In any case, UGA is not guilty of anything concerning this matter, nor I imagine, even the BB players moms phone calls. He is an incoming freshman for this year 2012, not an incoming recruit form two years ago.

Tide Roll,

Three questions for you.
First, don’t you think that UGA has a medical staff and the doctor would not allow the S and C coach to do anything that might be harmful to the players?
Question two and this should be an easy one since you know so much about UGA football. Do you really think that CMR is going to do something that might hurt the athletes that are on his team?
Question three. Who do you think gets injured easiest, the one that has worked in a hard S and C regiment or the one who is out of shape and therefore, by the fourth quarter, he is sucking wind and getting smashed all over the field of play. My guess is the out of shape one.
It is too bad that a poll can not be conducted for the players going through the S and C program right now and find out what the majority of them think. I would bet they would tell you it is very tough, but they also feel it is benefiting them greatly. Ask big Mr. Geathers, if that 20 or so pounds of muscle he has put on so far, is going to make him a better or worse player this year.

Benedict wasn’t going to play. That was the staff’s position..I’m sure after what happened with Trinton they are not relying on the players input to make that the decision. He says he wants to play but when you are still complaining of nerve damage that’s seems to put the school in a bad position IMO.What if he re injured that knee and the damage was worse.UGA would be crucified for it.It was said he was offered a medical scholarship and he turned it down. That means his football career at UGA would have been over.Is that the whole story?IDK but I do know whatever the school’s plan for Brent was.. he didn’t care for it.I wish the kid well…it’s extremely hard to come back 100 percent from that kind of injury. If he still thinks he can play in his heart then he should be allowed to pursue his dreams. If it were me making the call though..I wouldn’t have let him play in the spring…to risky IMO.

I bumped into him once at the Classic Center during Picture Day, and it felt like walking into a wall. And he was just the “video guy” then.

The man is old school in the gym, ya’ll.

Tear the muscle completely down by repetition until burn-out and then rebuild it so as to make it bigger and stronger, generally speaking.

Joe T was an OL here at UGA and worked on the S&C staff after his playing days were over, so he knows what he is doing.

If the kids listen to him and work as hard as he tell them to…we will be bigger and stronger than our opponents this year, especially in the fourth quarter.

Dear Knowledge: Boo-Hoo.

The “personal reasons” are secondary in the grand scheme of things. The main issue is that this young man showed a lack a basic moral assets like gratitide and loyalty. Coach Richt and his staff honored their commitment and gave a full-ride scholarship to Brent even after he tore up his knee as a senior in HS. And even after his future as a football player was largely in doubt, as there are no guarantees of return to one’s previous abilities and level of performance after an injury of this type.

Coach Richt and the university would have been well within their rights to pull their scholarship offer after such a severe injury, especially so in a situation where the injury occurred before his arrival on our campus.

But they didn’t. Kedric Gholston injured one of his legs so severely in a wreck his senior year of high school, the doctors weren’t sure he would even be able to walk again, much less play defensive tackle at an SEC school. He went on to play in the NFL after a stellar career at UGA because Coach Richt honored his scholarship offer then as well.

We held up our end of the bargain. Brent Benedict should have done the same thing.

There are a lot of misinformed idiots on this site. This kid was a 5 star recruit who tore his ACL, PCL and MCL, and also sustained nerve damage AFTER he was offered and committed to UGA. Richt was a man of his word and said that his offer still stood. He has rehabbed back but there were still some issues from his nerve injury. Marine talks about his ACL being repaired and that is a cakewalk compared to what Benedict has gone through. People also forget that his brother died in 2008 while getting ready for the NFL draft. If you have ever had knee problems you know it is something that takes a while to heal. The kid has tried for two years to get back to form. Sometimes it time to call and end to it. Now that the o-line is down another body it going to hurt in practice and in the game if you expect the same five to play every down of every game. God forbid that any of these young men should get hurt it leave the offense in trouble. CMR is a good man and a very good coach remember that when you are thinking about the football program at UGA. These kids will be stiff, injury prone, and inexplosive. with these workouts we need to be worried about all 4 quarters, not just the 4th. and when you bumped into him at the classic center did you notice his limp? the man’s knees are wrecked, and he’s doing the same thing to the players

I don’t know how fine we are going to be when we have Lost 9 of the 12 games these last 10 years against teams who finished in the AP Poll Top 10 and Lost 10 games these last 10 years against teams who finished not even with their win over us, in the Top 25. We don’t beat the truly great teams, and we Lose a game every year to a cupcake to-boot. How is that “fine” ?

1st, good luck to you Brent Benedict, I am sorry things didn’t work out. You all made the right decision. These “workouts” suck footballs and we all know it. Matter of time before someone steps up here. Coach you listening? Wake up, or hurt more kids. Thanks. And Red Dog, you are a fool sir.

Try to stay focused AltaDawg…………the original point was your statement that B’s departure would only help the team. You’ve stated that time and again as an excuse for any player leaving.

If you genuinely believe a player with a problem is better off gone from The Dawgs then it must certanly apply to the coaches who have been miserable failures (note; view video of most games over the past three seasons). Yet here is where you do an Obama Flip. You continue to support coaches with problems.

Wouldn’t the team be better off with them gone?
Now, relax and see if you can actually grasp the point and respond to the glaring conflict in your rationale.

I’ve been saying that for years, every since he said Joe Cox threw the football extremely well, especially on the deep pass – with his chronic shoulder with our 17 interceptions 2009 alone and # 80 in the nation passing offense.

Oh, yeah. Joe Cox really threw the football well.

R. E. Lee and Altadawg. You’re dang right I approve. Welcome to the 21st century. These athletes make up the best starting offensive line ever at UGA. Worry a little about Bean Anderson and his mobility at right tackle, and, of course, the extremely overrated Ben Jones at Center.

As weak as our offensive line was last year the S&C program had to have a radical change. I can’t imagine a program that would hurt these young men as many coaches as UGA has assigned to the S&C program to make sure they eat right and become physically strong. The players certainly don’t care, if they are interested in a football career in the NFL. When they get to the PRO’s do anyone here really think it would be easier than what coach T is demanding.
Benedict didn’t make his decision over night and I guarantee his family was involved in the decision. If that’s what he wants to do I support him 100%. He has his reasons and I don’t care if I ever fine out what those reasons are. It’s his business but if I had lost a brother recently and my rehab wasn’t progressing as fast as I would like , being closer to home and the support of my family would be pretty high on my wish list. It’s time to move on and I hope the kid finds what he needs.

There isn’t a player in Athens that wants “easier”. That is not the point. These guys have been around training at a high level for years, and they know when they are being asked to do work that is counter productive. Overtraining is not the answer to one of our programs percieved weaknesses. Sounds good on a blog that kids are busting ass and puking, but too much work in too little time = injuries and setbacks. Cannot be sustained. Sure you’ll see big gains initially, but lets see how long that lasts. Ask Smith, Gouldin or Williams how often you should max out, how many times a week you should squat….yeah it might differ a bit for a few individuals…but not for the whole team

I don”t have a problem if guy’s want to leave because of injury that hinders their playing time or because of financial hardships that effects their family negatively.

I guess I just have a problem with quitters and people who let other people decide on who they are. I believe each person with individual experiences that they chose will be better off in life overall than those who rely solely on others. I do believe in the influence that parents have and we as parents should understand there must be a balance. Hopefully, this is what happened in Burnette’s situation\
and he is comfortable with the decision.

Best of luck, and hope the best wherever you end up. It’ apparent that Georgia was either to much of a challenge for you or someone else told you your self-worth and how much you could or could not contribute.

Georgia will be fine, the talent pool at Georgia is still there and someone will step up and become a force on that offensive. Besides, most of the time it’s what’s inside that matters regarding a player at any position and at Georgia it’s not a time in the history Georgia football to be weak hearted,

I wish the others at Georgia the best, and this is a time/moment like no other to list your name in Georgia football history as either being one of the greatest teams that ever hit the field or just another average team. You chose stay or quit, give it 110% or less, or believe or doubt yourself and teammates, or whatever time will determine the metal of this team.

I just read where the UGA AD reported the Columbus mess to the NCAA nd SEC. Hopefully it can be resolved quickly. I don’t see Jones getting away with what he did, since apparently he was enrolled at USC when he took his free rides. The BB player may be a different situation since he was not committed to any school. I don’t expect we will see Mr. Jones on the field a whole lot to start off the season for the bulldogs. He did not exactly show good judgment for sure.
Talk about a school being snake bitten this year. Another LB is transferring to North Alabama, and I think they were counting on him , not as a starter but a capable player that would have gotten, some significant playing time.
The Dawgs have got some more wholes to fill now, with their two biggest games to start the season off with.

There is ALWAYS more to the story than what you will read (or even hear). The rationalization and/or excuses on things like this are amazing…..By the way, some, I repeat some, of you Dawg fans need to be careful, you’re starting to exhibit signs of “Aubie”ism”…..jealousy of Nick Saban. Reminds me of a AU-Tenn football game I attended on The Plains back in the 80’s. Fans behind me got drunk and were cursing BEAR BRYANT! Just sayin’……

Fla Dawg, just admit you made a dumb comment, I joked about it, you got all embarrased and now you are trying to cover it over with some circular logic that you are just making up to fit your narrative. I know what I said, and you are just wasting your time to try to convince me that I don’t know what I meant by it.

But hey, you got a guy who changes his name in here every 2 month so he doesnt have to own up to his past statement, to agree with you. Good job.

I think that the kid may just have a little mental problem as far as working out because he is really worried he might re injure his knee, and feels the S and C program, drives him too hard. He still had some nerve problems in the spring practices and he knew he wasn’t going to start this year as well. Maybe he figures he will do better at a smaller program. None of us know for sure what problems the kid has, in his head or on his body. I wish him the best of luck in his future but now the DAWGS just have to put him in their rear lights and do what we can to get our youngsters prepared to back up the O linemen who will start.

Interesting comment from Bill’s blog that transferring to another D-1 school would mandate a year of sitting and thus (if this is correct) not burn a year of eligibility while rehabbing even further.

Not sure to whom you are referring but once again you think it your position to critique anyone who makes a comment.
I made an initial comment about the article. It had NOTHING TO DO WITH YOU. Yet you took it upon yourself to make a response. I was not addressing you.

And your final non response is proof you are unable to introspect regarding the double standard you have for players and coaches. Richt and Bobo can fail miserably and you support them all day long. But if a player has a problem then you think it’s better for the team if he leaves.

Everything I’ve heard about Brent Benedict was
he does whatever his daddy tells him.
His daddy knew he would not play this year due
to not being fully recovered from his injury.
So, by transferring this will give him another year to recoup
his leg and give him another year of eligibility.
It’s about getting to the NFL for Benedict.
Dawgs are going to be fine with the current OL.
I’m alot more worry about the secondary?

Let me take a moment for introspection: Nope, you are still not making a good analogy.

A player that doesn’t want to be here IMO cannot ever do the program or himself any good, so I think he should leave.

You are saying that I have a double standard because you assume that I also feel Richt can’t ever do the program any good YET I don’t think he should leave.

I can understand your confussion. That wouldn’t make any sence. Let me solve that mystery for you. Your assumptions are incorrect and that’s why your conclusion is flawed. Feel better now?

I think the young man will be better off at a lower division school, but that is just my opinion. Unless he gets over the injury in his head, In other words, forget about it and play wide open another year of rehab probably will not help him. The only SEC team I see having a real interest for him right now, would be Florida. They only have 73 scholarships for this year, so they could take him as a project if they believe he will come around. I wish him well, but I think he has a way to go, before he sees the field.

If we don’t lose Mark Richt we will lose even more current players not to mention recruits. UGA fans and alumni deserve a great football coach! What else has to happen before we fire Richt? What about another SEVEN loss season?
All you guys who dismiss me as a hater, listen. I hate losing! I hate paying $3 million or thereabouts to a terrible coach. I hate losing all this in state talent to other schools.
I don’t hate CMR as a person, just as a coach. FIRE RICHT TODAY!

fpice,
I agree with you and I know an increasingly larger percentage of Dawg Nation agrees with you.
But there are some numbskulls who support Richt and Bobo regardless of how bad things get. They call themselves true fans but it is they who hurt the program the most by accepting failure year after year after year.
I will give Richt and his coaches credit for having recruited a highly talented bunch of kids recently. But a lack of talent has not been the problem. When the D can’t tackle and the O can’t block the problem lies in the coaching staff.
