Redshirt freshman OL Brent Benedict leaving UGA for ‘personal reasons’

Georgia’s already-precarious situation on the offensive line just got more precarious.

Benedict

Benedict

Brent Benedict, a redshirt freshman offensive lineman from Jacksonville and a former five-star recruit, left the team due to “personal reasons,” head coach Mark Richt said in a news release on Sunday. Benedict (6-foot-5, 312-pounds) was slated to back up Chris Burnette at right guard. He signed as a tackle.

Benedict did not return calls and texts seeking comment. Richt, who just returned from a mission trip to Honduras, was not available to comment.

Benedict was medically cleared this spring after a two-year rehabilitation of a major knee injury that occurred his senior year at The Bolles School. Indications are there has been some differences over how much and what kind of off-season training he should be doing as he prepared for his first active season on the field.

Georgia is now down to 13 scholarship offensive linemen, five of whom are true freshmen who just arrived on campus (not including Nathan Theus of Jacksonville, who signed as a long snapper). Incoming freshman tackle Xzavier Ward is also expected to miss the season with a knee injury.

Georgia already had a major reshuffle of the offensive line when starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant went down with his third major knee injury this past spring and tackle A.J. Harmon transferred to Alabama State. Redshirt sophomore Dallas Lee of Buford, who was listed as third-string left guard, will likely shift over to right guard.

Benedict’s departure is the second interruption of what had been a quiet offseason for the Bulldogs. A report out of Columbus on Sunday indicates there could be some eligibility questions for starting linebacker Jarvis Jones and five-star basketball signee Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.

As long as these guys remain healthy, nothing else matters. Sorry for the kid to have to leave the team, but these are the 5 guys we need. They’ll do fine and we’ll be fine.

Sounds like a negative byproduct of hiring your videographer to be the strength and conditioning coordinator. Richt really knows how to make good hires.

He hasn’t even played a game for UGA. It’s not like we lost a starter. Depth sure but it’s not like his leaving leaves a huge gap in our offensive line. Don’t jump off a cliff dawg fans! We’ll be fine. Good luck to the kid though.

sldkfjslk: You really know how to look like a douche. Congrats. The S&C is a complete 180 from last year. First work out Crowell worked so hard he puked, twice. That’s what I like to hear. Kids seem to like it and it’s working for them. Who cares who was hired to make it happen.

Granted, I was never a star athlete but these kids seem to hang it up at the first sign of them not getting their way. I’m sure there is a back story that we are missing, but leaving because you don’t agree with how hard you need to work?

I agree with CJJScout, these kids don’t want to work in order to become champions. They expect teams to lie down and let them beat them and then go win a title. It doesn’t work that way. You have to outwork your opponent if you expect to win. Winning an SEC title, or national title doesn’t happen during the season, offseason conditioning and lifting and getting your mind and body ready for the season is what wins you championships. These kids don’t want to work. Ealey, Harmon, and now Benedict left because they just don’t want to work but that’s ok. The ones that remain here, and that get through all the work, will be the ones sporting the ring.

@CJJScout,

I agree with you. There has to be more to the story. Why in the world would you leave because there’s a disagreement on how hard you should be working during the offseason. If that’s the case, then there’s no way I can see him going to Bama. Saban would never put up with that attitude. He would be gone in a NY minute if he took that attitude there. Again, there has to be more to the story.

Tough one here chipster!! Sounds like his dad did not like the way Joe T worked the boy. I say good work Joe T, Might as well find out who can’t stand the heat in the kitchen and let them ALL leave at one time. You win with men in the SEC period! We did not have any on that field against UCF. We will when we play our first game this year!!! My trusted feline side kick Clyde Boogie has on his Joe T thermal sweat shirt running around in the yard right now!!! I better go give the fool some water before he kills his dang self!!!

This kid tears his knee up in high school. No body expects he’ll ever be able to play again. Richt, and UGA, showed class and honored his scholarship. Now that it looks like he’ll play again, he bolts because he doesn’t agree with the workouts? Give me a break. Sounds like an ungreatful spoiled brat. If I was his daddy, and this is the feal reason he left, I load his butt up, drive him back myself, see that he apologizes to Richt and everyone else associated with the football team, have him beg to be allowed back on the team and take a belt to his big backside for ernbarassing me and his family. You give your word, you keep it. Richt and UGA kept theirs.

granger35,

Good post! I do remember something to that effect that Richt would honor his scholarship offer even after he was injured. Now this kid is leaving because he doesn’t agree with the workout drills? Sounds like he needs a good old fashion butt whupping. I tend to believe that the team doctor would have put a stop to any workouts that he thought would re injure his knee. I suffered a torn MCL 2 years ago and I can tell you that my knee has responded very well to the rigors of physical training and I’m 47 years old and OBTW, I’m a Marine. If his father is involved in this decision and it’s based on workouts, then shame on him.

To set the record straight, Georgia had offered a scholarship and received a commitment from Benedict before his season-ending injury. Richt promised the kid and his family that Georgia would honor the commitment.

Weasely move on the part of this Player, CMR stuck by him when he had major injuries in HS when many/most other HCs would have dropped him and moved on to the Next Recruit, because of this this SA got 2 “free” yrs. of education at school like ug2 when he could have found himself at a JUCO or at the lower level of NCAA CFB.

He “owed” CMR a better fate than this given the investment CMR made in him at a time when many other HCs would have turned their backs on him, HCs like Nick Satan for example.

Nerve damage in his foot to the point that he still didn’t have any feeling in part of it sounds pretty serious to me.I don’t know the whole story but maybe he didn’t like what he was being told about his playing prospects this year at UGA.We don’t know if his dad thought he was being worked too hard or not…maybe he didn’t think his injury was healing the way it was expected.

Why doesn’t everyone wait and find out what all the specifics are before they accuse the coaching staff or our S&C program of being a problem…I’m sure we will get the story in time, so at this time why not just wish the yong man well whatever path he chooses…Amazing how the idiots come out with all this rumor and attacks on our program when a kid chooses to leave…Keep in mind this young man suffered a serious, serious knee injury and the fact remains whatever school he was at this would have been an issue..Is this a blow to our team…yes, most definately, but it also opens up opportunities for others to step up…I will say this however, if the dawgs can’t convince some talented recruits to come to Athens, then we do have some problems with recruiting as far as interior lineman go…go dawgs

Granger: i agree with you. Richt honored his scholarship even after he had a terrible injury. UGA does not need losers like him in our program. What a wimp he is….he is still a boy..maybe, one day when he is 40 or 50, he might become a man. In the south this is what we call you: “Boy”.

I say GOOD DAMN RIDDANCE. We gave this quitter a scholarship when nobody else wanted him after he torn up his knee up in high school. The mainstream opinion was he would never play again. CMR and UGA showed class and honored his scholarship. His response now that it looks like he’ll play again is he bails out because he doesn’t want to put in the work to be a winner. He better hit the trail back to Florida because his character issues will prevent him from getting a job in this state. I’m in a hiring position and my company screens out these low character guys. A man or woman that quits on his or her team when the times get tough will quit on his company also.

I met Derrick Lott and Deangelo Tyson at a store I work at about a week ago and asked them how Jow T.’s new program was coming along. They said “Oh man, we just got through the first phase and we’re not looking forward to the second phase.” But they at least said it with a smile and the demeanor it takes to work hard and win championships.

Benedict may have been a 5-star recruit, but for Richt to still honor Benedict’s scholarship and let him come to UGA after getting his knee blown out in high school and Benedict turns on him (and the program) like this is disgraceful. Good riddance.

I hardly think crowell worked so hard he puked, twice. Most likely, he was so out of shape he puked. Thats not great coaching, anyone can get out of shape people to puke. And from what i’ve heard, benedict loves the weight room, just not the idiotic things he was being asked to do that were reinjuring his knee.

@Dawgs,

After suffering through a knee injury, it is always instinctive to think that you’re going to re injure it. Every little thing seems to make you worry because you’re not confident that it’s completely healed. This is where the team doctors come into play. If they have medically cleared him to play, then he’s cleared to workout as well. I’m fairly confident that Richt would not just let this kid leave on this note without first chatting with the team doctor and getting his opinion. If the doctor says that he’s good and the kid decides that he still does not want to do the workouts, then his only choice is to leave. This is not on CMR. He has been more than fair and accommodating to this kid.

Too bad, I was looking forward to seeing this kid play. A little premature to be assuming we know what the reason was isn’t it?

So I guess everybody in line takes one step forward in the chance to get PT now huh? I would say that recruiting just got more urgent, except I am sure they were already doing all they can for linemen right now.

Marine Dog it could have went that way or it could have been the opposite.They may have told him he WASN’T ready and playing with a brace was not going to be enough.Maybe they gave him a shot during the spring then told him they feel like he needs to wait until he’s 100 percent.
