POSTCARD FROM HONDURAS
Mark Richt was nearly 1,400 miles away from the Georgia Bulldogs’ practice fields this week, touring impoverished areas of Honduras served by the Christian charity organization World Vision International. It was his third visit to Honduras , but the first time any media has accompanied him. This is the last of daily postcards provided by AJC reporter Steve Hummer, who followed Richt and his wife Katharyn to chronicle their trip. Look for an in-depth report on Richt’s journey in Sunday’s AJC.
TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras — The return to what in Mark Richt’s world passes for normalcy began Friday before he and his wife, Katharyn, boarded the plane for home.
In the Honduran countryside, no one knew Richt or really understood what he did for a living. You try explaining his job to someone with no knowledge of The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.
“Coach Mark,” he often was referred to, without any real concept of the title.
But in the airport in the Honduran capital, fellow Americans, many of them returning from mission trips, lined up to have their picture taken with the Bulldogs coach. Here, he was Coach Richt again.
The story of this trip was about caring and sharing. As a way of transitioning to the more cutthroat world of college football, let’s consider one story Richt told on himself this week.
Yes, there are limits to his Christian charity.
While the Richts were in Honduras, three of their four children were at a religious camp in Missouri. One of the counselors there, a close family friend, had asked the Richts for a ticket to the season opener against Boise State. Katharyn initially said no problem. But when her husband learned that the ticket actually was for a friend of their friend — a Boise State fan — he turned down the request flat.
“He’s a good kid, but I’m not going to help Boise State. We’re going to do battle, and the last thing I want to do is help some of them,” the coach said.
The process of getting back his game face has begun.

Hoopster – why do you resent people talking about someone of good character? We’re quick to keep talking about negative qualities, and it’s refreshing that we have people we can KEEP talking about in a positive way. Our Bulldawgs need role models, not just football coaches. I am grateful the boys have someone who lives a Godly life to lead them. Just think of the coaches we COULD have!

It is quite obvious that you can’t please sports fans. If Georgia players, on their own time, get into trouble, he’s a terrible coach. If he goes to a foreign country on his own time, to do charitable work, he’s a bad coach. Just wait until the first game has been played before you rip him anymore. Give it a break.

It is indicative about where our football program is now, that to find a feelgood story 70 days before kickoff 2011, we have to read about Coach going to tour church mission camps in South America. If the campers do not know him, he is just another North American who warrants camp funds to make a welcome sign. He can do that on any day in January 2012. I am a dawg, a canine with a bad attitude, since 1967. My attitude when I think about someone like the late Erk Russell, then Coach Richt, goes from bad to worse. It is not his mission to turn his JOB at UGA into a religious quest. His mission is to coach up those young UGA Men into a cohesive winning SEC football team.

It is amazing to me to see that so many of you (like bozo) have so little to look forward to in life. There is much more than football as you will see as you grow up. This trip is one of the most important parts of CMS’s life and many of us do enjoy hearing about it. Who know’s it may even touch us in a way that we give part of what the good Lord has blessed us with to those in need.
Thanks Steve Hummer for covering this story for those of us who care about others and enjoy seeing the “good side” of sports for a change.

For those ignoramuses that say Georgia is now a second class school because they have not won a National Championship since 1980, let me show you a few facts.
Since 1980, only 18 teams have won a national championship. Some, like Fla., Nebraska, Florida St., LSU, Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma and Penn State have won several.
So, if only winning only one National Championship in thirty years, makes you a second class school, let me name you some other schools who, like Georgia, have only one once (hence they too are second class). How about losers such as, Ohio State, Southern Cal, Notre Dame, Tennessee, Texas, Auburn, Clemson, BYU, Ga. Tech and Colorado.
Then look at the poor losers that haven’t won any. Are Michigan, Texas A&M, UCLA, Washington, Arkansas, NC State, Iowa, W. Va., Va. Tech, Boston College, Old Miss, Arizona State, Boise State and Oklahoma State, plus hundreds of other schools, losers?
Next to Florida, Georgia has the best record, during the BCS era, of any SEC school. I’ll take a loser like that any day! I’ll take Mark Richt’s record during this era too.

If your entire life is built around wins and losses of ‘any’ school in football, then I really do feel sorry for you. What CMR does in Honduras will mean more to those people then anything ‘any coach’ ever accomplishes as UGA. If you do not understand this, then you really do have a problem. I love this game as much as anyone, I’m sick when they lose and thrilled when they win – but come on folks, this guy lives life the right way and isn’t just a role model for a football team, but for UGA alumni and fans and yes for other fans too. My son has attended CMR camps. He lives this life ‘everyday’. I’m glad he is Georgia’s coach and very proud that he has been in Athens for over 10 years now. I hope it’s another 10 regardless of record. Realize it’s a business and if he doesn’t win, he will not be there – but sincerely hope that we can have our cake and eat it too…
As far as the upcoming game against BSU. While I do not think it will be a repeat (UGA beat down of BSU), I also do not think BSU is going to come in to the Dome and walk away with it either. Real difficult game to gauge. A WAC team doesn’t match up well with any SEC team very well; but these guys have found a way to beat some very good teams with consistent ’smart’ QB play and coaching. The take ‘very good’ players and turn out ‘very good’ to ‘great’ teams. We’ll see.

Good strategy, Mark. Keeping that kid out of the stands is the key to victory!! God, what a coaching genius!

get this story out of the sports section where it doesn’t belong. if you think you are building up more “good will” for richt then stop wasting everyone’s time. the “he’s a great guy” reasoning for not firing him doesn’t work anymore. we all know that he is a great guy. if you have a choice and you can get a great coach who is also a great guy then that is fantastic. next choice is a great coach who is a jerk. sadly, richt falls into neither of those categories. the great coach component is missing. it is win big this year or have lots of time for “good guy” things and I am not convinced that is not his preference anyway. I wonder sometimes if richt is not using the football coach as a job to have a platform for and financial device to fund his good deeds. the world needs more people like mark richt, I just don’t want him as the head football coach at UGA.

If the ticket were for the ‘kid’ then I expect that Richt would have gone through with it, regardless of where the kid’s loyalties might be…but since all he was gonna do was give it to somebody else to ’score some points’ with them, then to hell with it…shoot, all he’s got to do now is call the Boise office, tell ‘em that they were the kid that CMR wouldn’t give a ticket to, and they’ll be golden. Of course, come the morning after that game my bet is that they’ll wish they had just stayed at home.

I’m sorry, but just what is it about any Boise State victory over any ‘non-sisters-of-the-poor’ (or whatever you wish to call ‘em) program that gives you folks the idea that they’ll handle Georgia…with ease or any other way? The only games I can think of are the Oklahoma one a few years back where they had to pull-off several miracles just to win it at the wire against a team that wished it were some place else playing somebody else…and last year against Va Tech where they – Boise – had to rely on VT giving them the game all night long, but particularly at the end…and, of course, that year they came to Athens with ‘high-hopes’ of beating us and went home ‘truly’ blue – and black. If by some chance they should win this game – and it would be by chance – then folks can write about it all they wish, but to think that they stand any chance of blowing out UGA is a true pipe-dream. If there’s a blowout, the blue team is the one that’ll experience it…but don’t worry guys, there’s always those ‘other sisters’ you’ve got lined up to play. Beating them ought to get you invited to something or another bowl – maybe the one they play on that blue-rug of yours.

But of course, no one has any interest in a Boise St vs GT match-up. So, the Maggots will have settle for playing UT-Chattanooga, Wofford or some other crap D-III team in a 3/4 empty dump in the middle of Techwood Homes.

Exactly why are we seeing articles about Richt’s private life and his mission trip. He is paid big bucks to do one thing: coach his teams to winning seasons. He has been failing miserably at his job for several years (a fact that is particularly irritating since his losing seasons had coincided with my daughter’s years at UGA). What he does with his big bucks is none of my business. If he does not produce a good winning season this year, I hope that he becomes a full-time missionary, whether by his own choice or forced by others.

The athletic history of UGA is full of so many sordid, sleazy incidents – dating back to Vince Dooley and continuing through Mark Richt – that it’s impossible to overlook. The school has come to stand for drunkenness and lawlessness, coddling of illiterate athletes who should never have been admitted to college, and rampant cheating by coaches.
Richt is no hero, stop praising him.

Coach Richt is doing the right thing. It is great that he has a deep desire to help others. I believe he has learned a lot and will come out this season with an intensity we have not seen before. The question is whether or no the team follows suit. Let’s face it, The Dogs are in the middle of some rebuilding years and need a lot of hard work to be top tier again. They should be able to greatly improve over last season though and will kick South Carolina’s skinny butt for sure. Tech will also go down. All I can say is that Boise State better be ready as I know the Dogs will be. This will be Murray’s coming out year. Thank goodness Ealey our wimpy running back who was always afraid to get hit, always went down on the first hit, and who had the smallest feet (size 6 ladies – I guess) of any running back ever – (no wonder he couldn’t stay on his feet) went away. The Dogs will win at least 8 and possibly 9 regular season games – bank on it.

The small memories of some of you morons. Do you not remember the last time these 2 schools played each other and some UGA folks wanted to buy a ticket for a man in the military that was a BSU fan? The NCAA came down on them and said no way! Can’t do it! CMR wanted to nip that one in the bud so the NCAA does not come around snooping and throw some kind of lousy violation at them .
Everyone knows that the NCAA is looking for every chance to try and prove itself.
I firmly believe they would make a big deal of a “rumored” ticket being given to a BSU fan from CMR.
Read between the lines and use your brains instead of just shooting off your pie holes because you hate CMR!
For those of you that don’t like this article BECAUSE you hate CMR and positive stories just simply go to another blog. You’re not wanted here. I’m proud to have a “stand up” guy like CMR coaching the Dawgs. He may not be the best coach in the country, but he is by far not worse coach.

How about instilling some discipline in the team you joke? dont you think that would do more to help beat boise state than keeping one fan out of the seats. And try beating UF more than twice a decade moron! If this guy was at UF they would have fired him years ago for losing to GA. every year. Why do we put up with this? we WILL lose to SC and UF this year….again. While richt is handing out bibles in third world countries, Sban is spending every waking moment thinking about how to beat LSU. Thats the difference folks. Being great human beings doesnt win football games. Otherwise Spurrier selling insurance by now.

I have a question for you. In overall life what do you think would be more important, handing out Bible and telling others about Jesus or just thinking about winning football games? Just curious

If the kid can afford to come to Georgia, he can afford to buy a ticket, why would this kid be anymore deserving of a ticket than anyone else? Just because he’s a friend of a friend, and to those who don’t like what’s written, don’t read it, all your doing is making yourself look like an idiot, when I read a persons post, and it starts off running someone down I just skip to the next poster that way I don’t waste my time on drivel.

Santoka,
Not that CMR owes you any explanation but perhaps you didn’t read recently where he sold his house on the lake so he could give more financially to the mission and people he supports. Believe it o not, he doesn’t have to show you or anybody else on here his tax returns, or anything to do with his charitable contributions.

When it comes to teachers making $35,000 a year, all we hear is pay for performance. If you can’t teach urban gang members who don’t want to be in school and turn them into high school graduates, you need to find another job. So why don’t we apply that to a coach who makes millions per year? Win or leave, Coach Richt.

They come out of the wood work just to complain about anything UGA and CMR. The games will be decided on the field and certainly not by a bunch of the losers on here, that are lucky if they even know what a football looks like, much less what to do with one. For your information and I am sure additional insults, here is an article you might like to read. Since it is not written by the staff of the AJC, I don’t know who you will say is not creditable, but I am sure you will find one.

Then again, Techies don’t have a lot of social life, so I guess you will not worry about being out at night where you might get in harms way.

I have a story. I friend wanted some tickets to a game once. When I found out that it was for a family friend of an uncle of a friend of a friend of a guy who said he was a fan of the other team, it made me realized that fifth hand information was always true. So a journalist wrote an article about it.

I guess I just don’t agree or understand your statement. CMR has the 3rd best winning % the past 10 years in the SEC. That’s proof enough that he wants to win games. Yes, the past 2 years have been bad, but please tell me one coach that has not had to go through a tough stretch?
I think CMR deserves a one week break, along with any other HC, to get away and clear their heads. How come you don’t say anything about coaches who go off on a fishing trip for a week to get away or a golf trip? Is it because CMR is doing what the LORD has called him to do that you’re so negative about him?
Makes no sense what you’re posting. Just my opinion.

What’s hilarious about this………….. Chris Petersen of Boise State would have given UGA fans tickets and probably given them good seats so they could see up close Boise State destroy Georgia like the redheaded stepchild they are..
And, by halftime, when Georgia is getting stomped, those UGA fans would now realize why he gave them tickets.
SHOW THE DIFFERENCE IN A GOOD CLASSY COACH, and a dwindling in decline coach who is trying to be everything to everyone due to shoddy coaching and lack of class.

@DIT – your comments are exactly what I expected. No one ever said Richt doesnt have his priorities straight. The problem is This is the SEC and its all rellative to competition. Richt is 2-8 vs. our biggest rival. Not only that but some of those UF teams have been really weak he lost to. We consistantly have the least disciplined team in the SEC. We get the least out of our talent year in and year out. That is a fact. Many other SEC coaches have stated as much. If I had a son playing in the SEC and wanted him to play for a great man, then I would choose no one but Richt. If I wanted my son to win championships I would choose atleast 5 others before him.

PB,
You did type your comments with tongue in cheek I hope. If this guy needs a ticket, let him go get it then, from your generous coach at Boise State. Why should he expect to get a ticket from a rival coach. That is just plain darn stupid. Of course, based on your previous comments on the AJC blogs, I would expect it from you. I am sure you have a blog for your team you can post your stupid comments on and maybe there someone will actually take them seriously. The game by the way, will be decided on the football field, where if the record indicates correctly, Boise State hasn’t really done so well, in previous visits to a SEC venue. Brag after Boise State has actually played a real schedule against quality teams in a conference like the SEC.

I’m a huge Boise State fan, and I hope the Broncos show everyone in SEC country (especially those that Troll BSU blogs) that they are far from the team that they had in 2005. That being said, I think it’s more disrespectful of someone to try and ask Georgia’s coach for a ticket to the game for one of my fellow Broncos than it was for him to say no. BSU fans travel well, even before the Fiesta Bowl but now it’s just crazy. Outnumbered TCU at that Fiesta despite the game being played in Arizona. Big presence at FedEx, even though of course VT was most of the crowd. Why would he want another one of us getting in, especially gratis? And for the four or five people who might think it rude of him, there are hundreds of Dawg fans that would want his head if they ever found out he gave a ticket to a Bronco. There will be plenty of time to be humble and gracious and giving to fans of other teams….after the game has been played.
