Georgia continues to turn to its past for the future of its strength and conditioning program.

Gilbert
The Bulldogs on Tuesday made official the hiring of former player Tony Gilbert as assistant director of strength and conditioning. Gilbert, an NFL veteran who lettered for Georgia from 2000-02, has been working with the team for the past couple of weeks while awaiting the clearance of a background check.
“I’m thrilled to have Tony as part of our strength staff and program,” said Georgia coach Mark Richt, who is currently on a mission trip to Honduras. “His experience as a member of a UGA SEC championship team and an NFL player is a perfect combination for us. Our players will benefit greatly from his knowledge.”
Gilbert becomes the fourth new member of the ever-expanding strength staff. He joins director Joe Tereshinski, John Kasay Sr., Keith Gray, Thomas Brown and Rex Bradberry. Also assisting in the weight room as they attend classes at UGA are NFL veterans Kendrell Bell and Verron Haynes. All but Gray and Bradberry are Georgia football lettermen.
“I’m very excited and thankful for the opportunity to come back and be a member of the staff here at Georgia,” said Gilbert, who This is where I played, went to school and graduated, so I consider it an honor to contribute once again to the program and to have an impact on young men’s lives. I’m really looking forward to it.”
A native of Macon, Gilbert was defensive captain on the Bulldogs’ 2002
SEC championship team. He had 114 tackles that season, including 2.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for lost yardage, and earned 2nd team All-SEC honors that season. Gilbert currently ranks 10th on Georgia’s all-time list of career tacklers with 328.
Gilbert was drafted in 2003 by the Arizona Cardinals and eventually played for two NFL teams, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Atlanta Falcons.

I think JoeT had done a tad bit more as his role as long time assistant S&C director, and scout team coach, than walk around and spot some guys in the weightroom. This might also not be the last hire every made in this position.

A lot of folks complained that UGA was dead by the fourth quarter last year, and yet, when something is done to try and improve the system, there you are again complaining. Some folks would P and moan, if you were hung with a golden rope.
I will bet that the team that represents UGA this year will, be one of the more conditioned teams they have fielded in years. Not that this will stop some people on these blogs from complaining.
Young Mr. Crowell is just learning what it will take to be a top RB in the SEC, and he will catch up physically and I hope, be a good back. If not he will ride the bench and be just a memory. My guess is that he will respond and will get in the shape necessary to play.
If some of the other players are complaining about it being too tough, they may need to find a school more to their liking where the coach is not as interested in conditioning. It will pay off in the long run, with less injuries and more strength come the 4th quarter.

That is exactly what he did. I have sold weight equipment to Coach Van Halanger and Coach Grey and I am telling you that when I was in there, that is exactly what Tereshinski was doing. Hell, he was in charge of cutting up the video tape for up coming opponents etc. When could he have been an S&C coach? He’s just a glorified cheerleader. We need someone with expereince with the up to date training methods not a couple of 60 year old old farts running around thinking Vince Dooley is still the coach!

I feel good with him and Thomas Brown on staff. They are young and can really relate with the current players, but they are also both mature professionals who have worked in the NFL.
Tony was a beast on defense, and played with that fiery passion weve missed. Thomas was the same way as an offensive player. Together they could really put some umpf back in our playing style.

So he was spotting somebody the day(s) you were there, so in 29 yrs on the S&C staff at Georgia that must have been all the ever did? The couple of past players that I know don’t seem to share that opinion. I got to go with them. I’m sure you aren’t offended.
