Georgia coach Mark Richt hopes more off-field accountability among the players could translate into more on-field victories this fall. (AJC photo)
Q&A WITH MARK RICHT & PLAYERS
I had a bunch of in-office responsibilities yesterday and have been away from the blog today doing what us reporters do. So my apologies if you’ve been pining to read something UGA and have checked here only to find nothing. But while I was wiling away with clerical duties and in meetings yesterday, my hard-working colleagues Ken Sugiura and Meghan Rose were down in Macon soaking in the preseason football talk at the annual Peach State Pigskin Preview at the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. And in addition to attending to the many teams and personalities represented there, they also were kind enough to listen in on the Bulldogs’ discussions. So in as raw a form as you can get it, here then is some of the Georgia stuff from that event. And don’t worry, I’m working on a few things here and there myself. Stay tuned. . . .
Q: Coach Mark Richt on becoming more willing to offer special teams players in recent years (the Bulldogs currently have five kicking/snapping specialists on scholarship and two recruits committed).
A: “If you can find guys that you know have incredible talent and the consistency that it takes to be great, you might as well give them a scholarship. Until the kickoff rule changes, you’d better have somebody who can kick it off high and deep. Punting is huge. Think about the return men in our league. If every time you have to hold your breath because you’re kicking it to some guy who can take it to the house, that’s a scary thought. But if you have someone who can kick it high and deep and force them to fair catch they can’t beat you if you can force a fair catch.”
Q: (To Richt) You haven’t had any players get into any serious trouble so far this year. Why do you think that is?
A: “I don’t know. I wish I had the answer to that. I think that they know that’s probably been part of our issue as to why maybe we haven’t had the success that we believe that we should have. Again, when we talk about player-driver and coach-driven situations, even those types of things have to be driven by the players and they do need to be accountable to each other and to their families and to the university. We know we could all wake up tomorrow and have a bad situation, but to this point, they’re doing a nice job.”
Q: (To Richt) Has that made for a more relaxing summer?
A: “So far. Vacation starts tomorrow, so give me 10 more days.”
Q: (To Richt) How is Bruce Figgins handing the transition from tight end to fullback?
A: “I like what Bruce is doing. He’s taken on the position change with a good attitude. Who knows? He’s still playing tight end. We’re not just playing him strictly as a fullback. he’ll be able to do both. It will give him an opportunity to be a starter or a greater chance to become a starter for us as a senior, a chance to lead for us. I like what’s going on with Bruce. I think he’s trimmed down a little bit. At one time, I think he got close up to 280 pounds. He’s closer to the 260 range can run, run routes, catch the ball.
Q: (To Richt) How can you compensate for the losses of A.J. Green and Kris Durham?
A: “Losing both those guys has left a void. a guy like Marlon Brown, Rantavious Wooten will now have a greater chance to prove what they can do. I think Tavarres [King] has made enough plays to let everybody know he’s ready to play for us. Orson Charles may get a few more balls, Aron White may get a few more balls. And then there’s a bunch of young players, freshmen and redshirt freshmen and Michael Bennett who I know have the talent base to make plays. The other thing, too, is the quarterback. It’s hard sometimes to have A.J. Green and not feel like you’ve got to throw the ball to him every time. Now he can read the full field and be more concerned about what the coverages are doing and throw the ball to the right guy at the right time.”
Q: (To Richt) We haven’t heard from you since the SEC presidents voted to reduce annual football signings to 25. Will that fix the problem of over-signing?
A: “All I’m saying is you can still over-sign with 25. If you only have room for 15 and you sign 25, you still sing more than you’ve got the question is everybody’s integrity. That’s the question. Are we all going to do things in the right way? and I think everybody’s trying to do that. It’s not an easy thing to manage. It’s really not. because on signing day, if you sign right to the 85 number, by the time august rolls around you might have only 79 because of the attrition that happens from the signing day until august and that’ what everybody’s trying to figure out. How can we start the season at 85 and not over-sign? It’s not as simple as maybe everybody want to make it.”
Q: (To linebacker Christian Robinson) How is the offseason strength and conditioning program different under new director Joe Tereshinski Jr.?
A: “I’d say we’re working more efficiently right now and we have a mindset that we’re not just lifting weights. We’re lifting weights to win a game on Saturday. Coach T and his staff have done a great job of providing that vision for us to where the leaders can reinforce it. We don’t have to worry about not knowing where we’re going. We know what’s ahead of us and the weight room has been the first step to this season. It’s a team effort. if your weakest link isn’t doing well, your team’s not going to do well. We finish together as a team. We do every drill together as a team. If one guy doesn’t do it right, everybody does it over. That’s the way we’re going to behave.

Last week's visit by and workout with UGA legend Herschel Walker was a thrill -- and a pain -- for the current Bulldogs. (UGA photo by Steve Colquitt)
Q: (To Robinson) What was it like working out with Herschel Walker last week?
A: “My abs still hurt. He can work. Everything you see on TV, he’s in that type of shape. He could probably beat every one of us. He really just challenged us. It wasn’t about the workout; it was about how you do it. It was about having the right mental attitude. He had the quote: ‘My body’s the army, my mind’s the general.’ I think a lot of guys took that seriously and said, ‘there’s going to be times I’m not going to want to do a workout, I’m not going to want to put in the extra time, but if I tell myself I’m going to do it, I can do it.’ It’s kind of cliché, but it’s really the truth.”
Q: (To Robinson) Is there a greater accountablity and sense of accountablity with this year’s team?
A: “It just came from wanting to be successful. I think a lot of the guys came together, I know right after the bowl game, we were all on the bus going back to the hotel. After the bowl game, we were all talking to each other, texting each other saying we didn’t like the way we felt. It was the first time we lost a bowl game since I’ve been here. We didn’t want to go out on that note and the way the season went as well just taking the necessary steps as well and holding everybody accountable. If I’m not working, I expect somebody to call me out and I’m going to do the same for my teammates. Not because I’m taking that on them; it’s because I want to win this fall. I want to win games. I want to be successful and I know everybody out here that came here to Georgia wants to do the same.”

I won’t even read the other comments, because I think 75% of those will be negative and I just want to slap the negative, fair-weather fans.
I start out, every year, hoping for another run at the National Championship. My second goal is to continue bragging rights, vs. any Tech fans, I know.
Beyond that, I’d like the DAWGS to whip Auburn and Florida and all else is just icing on the cake!

My prediction will be 9-3 and I BLEED RED AND BLACK AND HAVE FOR THE LAST 44 YEARS. I BELIEVE WITHOUT CONVICTION AND PROPER COACHING WE WILL SUBMIT TO FAILURE. BUT IF THE COACHES DO WHAT THEY ARE PAID TO DO AND THE PLAYERS STAND UP AND GUIDE AND LEAD THE TEAM SUCCESSFULLY WE WILL OVERCOME OUR LAST SEASON STATS AND PREVAIL IN THE END. I’M IN AGREEMENT WITH A LOT OF MY FELLOW DAWG DIEHARD’S THAT IF THE COACHING STAFF OF THE UNIVERSITY OF GEORGIA BULLDOGS DON’T DO THEIR JOBS THEY ALONG WITH CMR IS HISTORY.

It’s all about team work this year. If these guys work together and put in the effort, the DAWGS can be fairly good. I don’t think they will win the SEC or MNC but they have a chance to get 9 wins I think. Some of them will be asked to shorten their learning curve quite a bit, but if we have some team leaders, and they all play together, they can do quite fine, with the players we have on board.

Apologize to Herschel for misspelling his name. Still, my thanks for attending Georgia. No excuses on the misspelling his name-however I did just wake up. Haven’t had the first cup of coffee yet. Once again I would love to see former Georgia players going by to visit more often.

Dan,
Perhaps you can pick a better medium to reach CMR, with your rants about his failures as a coach. I don’t think he reads this section if he comes onto the AJC website. Try an email to him as I am sure he would appreciate your input.

???
Good grief. If the traditional methods (good coaching, sound tackling techniques, properly executing offensive plays from the playbook, etc.) do not work, then try something else.
This comes from chapter #4 of Richt’s “How to Become a Cutting Edge Football Coach” guide book. Better pick up the pace coach. The book has eighteen chapters.

Richt and Robinson, 2 guys that have done nothing to help UGA win football games the past 2 years. Richt has been outcoached and outworked by every coach of every top tier SEC program, and Robinson hasn’t made a big play in 2 years. Until these guys can actually contribute to helping UGA win a big football game, they both need to just shut up. Their opinions mean nothing, and until they can let there play and coaching do their talking for them, they will continue to be 2 losers on a losing football team.

Tide Roll…..I wish you were our coach! You have all the answers and have NEVER seen one practice during the season or spring! I get tired of your act! If you know everything, then apply for the job! That’s right…you need a college degree though to coach in the NCAA, so that may cause problems. Just talk to the Bama people, please quit with us. You make me hate Bama, when I really like them except when they play UGA. Go Dawgs!

AJ Green is a nice kid. Good luck to him and I hope he does extremely well in the NFL.
He will not be missed. Last year, his selfishness cost UGA the season. Period. Over his entire body of work he might have played in 15 FULL games over three years.
Folks …………… you do not miss a guy that was there a little better than 55%=60% of the time. He did nothing for UGA ………….. he said he would make Colorado pay
(when he came back for that game) but he did not.
Let us move forward. I will predict that Bennett has a chance to be as good as Kris Durden.

Durham was good because he was standing the spot for 4 games that Murray had been drilled to throw to. Throw to #8. Well, let me rephrase that. Durham was however good he was on his own. His numbers were up because of that. I absolutely think Richt is correct in that his second year QB looking for open receivers, and not just THAT receiver, is a better situation, and I have said that for a while now. (that’s not to say that I don’t wish AJ could have been one of the them this year)

I agree with you AltamahaDAWG, Murray should be able to scan the field this year without having to always look for A J to be there. In a way, A J going to the Pros. could be an addition by subtraction. No doubt A J was a great receiver, but at times, it seemed like we had more plays designed for him than we did for the offense as a whole. If our young WR’s step up to the plate we will be good enough to not worry about that stage of the game. If the OL does it’s job, then Murray has time to find them, and if you leave a decent receiver free to run around in the backfield or down field, he will eventually, get open. It will be real nice if our RB’s show they can step up also, so we do not become one dimensional. I think we have the ingredients for a good year offensively if some of the youngsters can pick up their learning curve and the OL holds up injury wise. I am not worried about the D too much.

If CMR could have recruited for Coach Jim Donnan we would have won a couple National Championships by now. Under Donnan out tight ends would play a major roll in winning ganes. I’ll be keeping an eye on Mettenburger, Gray and Ealey this year. Too bad Gray listened to Richt and hung around too so long that he will not have time to play QB for someone else. Mettenburger and Ealey had attitude problems that could be a result of coaches not knowing how to utilize the tallent they have. It’s sad but true that even Lane Kiffen could take the tallent Georgia had and put winning teams on the field. CMR is a fine man but after 10 years of declining records, due to substandard preformance, his job is only secured by the price of his buyout clause. Hopefully this will be the year he puts it all together and turns things around.

So Mettenberger going to valdosta during spring break and groping a bartender was his way of acting out against a coach that wasnt utilizing his talents as a true freshman?
You do remember Mett failing to complete a forward pass in his first G-day game right? So he should have starter that year? Over Cox, and also over Gray (who you say was also robbed). Kind of hard to start both Gray and Mett that year wasn’t it? in either case we would have lost 3 more games that year.

10 yrs of declining records? (and technically he could have only declined for 9 of those) Was he 15-0 his first year?

And How was Ealey NOT being utilized. Started as a true freshman the very game he was healthy enough to play and was given every chance to start and be the main back untill he decided to transfer. Chance after chance, DESPITE the loss of several game pretty much falling directly on him. (to the degree you can blame any one player) .
Unless you are saying he ran into parking garage truck as a way of proactively acting out because Richt was going to recruit Crowell the next year.
UGA Summer Workouts
June 18th, 2011
10:09 am
Thought I would pass this on from a team trainer earlier this week….
On Monday….
Workouts under S&C began Monday. The new freshman lift in the mornings and the veterans in the afternoon. The core lifts on Monday were bench press and squats. They had to get 30 reps at 70% of their max. Isaiah Crowell could not finish the lifting or the running and drew Coach T’s wrath. Ken Malcome could not finish with the veterans.
On Tuesday….
The core lifts were close grip inclines and leg presses. The most obvious leader in the weight room is Christian Robinson. Bruce Figgins came in great shape. The most impressive of the new players is clearly John Jenkins. He is very strong and is in great shape. He will be the first new player moved to the veterans workouts. Crowell continues to struggle and was the only player who couldn’t finish Tuesday. He threw up more than once.
I like this! Get Stronger, Faster, Meaner, now!!!

Welcome to big time football Mr. Crowell. Not going to be a cake walk for you or any other player, as I am sure he has found out now. Just quit reading the past head lines and get in there and work your butt off. High school is a long time ago now, and this is the place you have to prove you belong. If you learn how to put in the effort, you can be a very good RB. If not, the pine awaits you. The experienced players on the team are not just going to anoint you the starter so get on it young man. Weight training tends to separate the men from the boys so to speak. I think now that he knows what it will take, he will put in the effort.

Richt and Bobo have shown they get outcoached and outsmarted in lots of games. Why do they insist on complicating playbooks and schemes that require a little too much sophistication and comprehension on our players’ part? It seems they continually prove their lack of coaching abilities. I don’t feel like I am bashing them but stating what has been readily apparent. To hell with different jerseys and other fake proponents. Get the team ready to line up and out fight some folks for a change.
