Georgia AD Greg McGarity (L) and President Michael Adams will have the most to say about coach Mark Richt's future as the Bulldogs' football coach. (AJC photo by Curtis Compton)
St. Simons Island — Truth or fiction, reality or perception, the general thought on Georgia football is that this is a critical season for head coach Mark Richt. Virtually every preseason story that has been written on the Bulldogs so far, has placed Richt on the proverbial “hot seat.”
But there are only a handful of people whose opinions really matter on this subject, chiefly UGA President Michael Adams and Athletic Director Greg McGarity.
It is them, and to some degree the Georgia Athletic Association executive board gathered here at the King & Prince Resort this week, that will ultimately decide Richt’s fate. So I asked them how they felt about things.
“First of all, the guy that has the most to say about it is the AD,” said Adams, presiding over the board’s annual end-of-the-year meeting here the past two days. “Despite what sometimes gets written, I haven’t done one of these things, pro or con, without heavy consultation with the AD.
“That said, I think you look at a person’s whole body of work. And I think the whole body of work by Mark Richt the last 10 years is very strong. We have very high expectations at the University of Georgia. We didn’t meet them last year. But I’m pretty confident that we’re going to spring back, that he made the kind of adjustments in staffing that needed to be made. Now we’ll do what we always do with every coach every season; we’ll sit down at the end of the season.”
The reason for the speculation is Georgia is coming off a 6-7 campaign — its first losing season since 1996 — and a two-year stretch in which it is just two games over .500 overall (14-12) with a losing SEC record (7-9).
But when you look at Richt’s “body of work” before that, it paints a totally different picture — 82 wins over eight seasons, two SEC championships, four first-place finishes in the SEC East and two second-place finishes.
“Our first requirement is to run the program properly,” Adams said. “You will get in trouble at Georgia more for failure to do that rather than for having a bad season once a decade. But we do think with our resources, with our recruiting base, with our fan base, it’s not unreasonable to expect us to have a winning football program. And we have for 13 of the 14 years I’ve been here. I fully expect we will for 13 of the next 14.”
Richt made some significant changes after last season. He replaced his longtime strength and conditioning coordinator, Dave Van Halanger, with Joe Tereshinski Jr. Tereshinski, a former All-SEC player and strength coach under former head coach Vince Dooley, brings an old-school training approach. The strength staff was also expanded and nutritionists are now overseeing the year-round diets of all the players.
“I think we got off to a wonderful start in January,” McGarity said. “I’ve said many times, how you perform in September and October comes down to what you do in January. You set the tone, you set the expectations, you say this is the way we’re going to run our operation. There’s no question – and I think Mark would acknowledge this and I think the players would acknowledge it— that they’ve gotten off to a good start with nutrition and strength and conditioning.”
Board members who were asked about the direction of the football program all expressed support for Richt while also acknowledging that 2011 will be an important season.
“He’s not in my hot seat; he’s still in my lap,” Bob Bishop, an executive board member for 29 years, said with a laugh. “I love him. I don’t think you can find a better human being anywhere and he’s a fine football coach. He’s proven that time and time again. But we all know it goes in cycles. He had a bad cycle last year and he made a lot of changes to improve on that. If you have a real bad season again there’s going to be a lot of turmoil all over the state and on campus and behind the scenes.”
Said board member emeritus Gary Hill: “I’m firmly in Mark Richt’s corner. I want him to succeed. Everything is in place for him to succeed and I’m pulling for him to do so. Who wants to go through the turmoil of changing coaches and changing staff?”
Bishop was asked if the board would have to respond to alumni or fan dissension.
“You’ve got to listen; that’s why we serve on the board. But most of that doesn’t play into it,” he said. “You evaluate the program independently and how the program is progressing. We’ve had a couple of down years. It will be very nice if he can improve that 6-and-7, at least modestly. But I think our program is in good shape.”
McGarity agrees and expressed confidence in the prospects for this coming season.
“I think there’s tremendous leadership on this team and I think that’s one thing that gets lost in the conversation,” McGarity said. “Individuals like Orson Charles and Aaron Murray and Christian Robinson and Ben Jones, you’ve got some guys like that are taking it upon themselves. If we have problems internally, they’re going to take care of it before it ever reaches anyone anywhere.”
That has been another criticism of the program under Richt. Off-field issues, such as 10 arrests of football players last year, made it appear there was a lack of discipline on the team.
So far there have been no arrests this year.
“Are we always going to stay out of trouble? No, chances are we’ll have our bumps in the road,” McGarity said. “But I think the things that you look at from a leadership standpoint, I feel very good about that. How will that translate into wins and losses? I think sometimes winning is a byproduct of what you do, just like in any other walks of like. If you work hard, you pay attention to details, then winning is going to be a byproduct of that.”
McGarity said he was impressed with the way Richt and his staff responded to last season’s disappointment, particularly by going out and signing a Top 10-ranked recruiting class.
“There’s no question that Mark feels invigorated about the season,” McGarity said. “I think he’s excited to go. All of the sudden it’s going to be June 6 and everybody comes to campus and they’re going to be under our wing at that point.”
Bishop has presided over four football coaching changes in his time on the board, so he knows the realities of today’s high-stakes college game. But he scoffs at the criticism of Richt’s ability to coach.
“I remember back when Bear Bryant was coaching, he had a bad year and everybody was saying the game has passed him by,” Bishop said. “Biggest joke I’ve ever heard. He had a few bad years, but he had a few good years, too. All we need is one more point than Boise State and we’ll be on the road.”

I would like every UGA fan to answer this question: Which scenario do you want to play out:
1. UGA has a good season and Richt gets an extension
or
2. UGA tanks or is even 6-6 and Richt is fired.
One of these will happen. So I ask again true fans, what do you want to happen?
Think about it before you start bashing MY coach.

I have no problem with them supporting him but, he must be held accountabale for the poor showing of the team and I do think he has been. Will they hold him accountable for Bobo if he does not get the job done in preparing the offense for the season, not just the first game. No one can deny that the offense has underperformed under him and that his play callling has caused a lot of aches and pains over the last four years. We need a more creative OC because, if anyone watches UGA games, the offense is very boring and predictable. He has to learn how to make proper adjustments on each posession not just at half time. As of now, he has a lot to prove in his game planning and adjustments against top DC.

I hope they extend his contract!! I believe he is the right man for the job! But, I’m sure there will be many who look at the last 2 years and will still want to run him out of town. I believe this is what is causing problems right now with recruiting of players for ‘12. But, winning will turn some of them around. Keep CMR and extend his contract! Blah Blah Blah…. This means nothing, absolutely nothing. Greg McGarity WILL clean house if Richt goes below 8 wins, believe that. This is a matter of business. You can’t have a team with UGA’s resources only averaging 6 wins a season, especially when the SEC East is down. If Richt shows improvement this season, he will stay. If he goes 6-6 again, he’ll be gone.

Ring Leader – Don’t remember seeing any total destruction of UGA by anyone last year. We lost 7 games but no total destruction and definitely no total desctruction by UCF. So you need to take your blinders off.
The program is definitely headed in the right direction and please, please – if you don’t like the direction get off the damn band wagon. There is plenty of room at Auburn, Alabama, and Florida for the band wagon fans. UGA does not want or need those type of fans.
51WTGW50 – I would beg to differ on what happens with that regardless of the season this year. Again – you should pay more attention to behind the scenes if you have access to that.
Ignore the media they are not important. The important people know the situation and thank god they are much more intelligent and in tune with the real issues and what needs to be done. All of which has been addressed to this point.

Well, Adams validated my several post the last 6 months. He said he expects Georgia to a have a winning football program. That is a quote from above. Read it again if you have to. The word ” Championship” program was not used. Regular bloggers on here know that I’ve have posted that is all Adams cares about. 9, maybe 10 wins and a decent bowl is just fine by him. It Mark can deliver that, he’ll be the Georgia coach for life. And truth be known, after reading these blogs the last two years, most Georgia fans are OK with this also.

Everything sounds positive going into next season accept for the problems on the offensive lines.
Glad those who matter are behind Richt. I spent five years working for one of the top 5 contibutors to the athletic dept. We would sit in the sky box and gripe, “When are they going to do something about Coach Goff?” Then it was, “When are they going to do something about Coach Donnan?” Every time my boss would say, “I’m sure that Coach Dooley knows a little more about this than y’all do. Maybe we should let him handle it.” I have an B.A. from UGA which my parents paid for and I earned. They don’t owe me anything else and that includes a national championship.

So with that logic we should fire the coach every time we don’t play in the National Championship Game?
The goal is to win every game. 9 or 10 wins per year SHOULD keep you around in order to be in position for a NC. It’s time to be realistic JB. UGA COULD HAVE PLAYED 3 TIMES IN THAT GAME BEFORE 2008. Is that bad? I believe Richt was our coach during that time span!

I like Mark. I’m hoping for the best. I know that the University is giving him more rope than Maryland and Miami gave their coach’s this past year. Mark, like Obama, has fans that would keep him in place regardless of results. That loyalty can be admired in some circles. Every article written outside of the Georgia reading area has pronounced Mark gone this year if they don’t have a good year. They are not saying that because they want it or have some inside info, they are saying it because college football logic and history has dictated that a coach at a “football school”, and we are one, can not survive a 3-4 year slide.. Mark is like 12-14 in the SEC the last three years. I feel this way because of my head, not my heart. We’ll just see what happens. Go Dawgs

The plan this year is pure and simple:

Without a championship, even if it is a directional championship(SEC East) Richt will be in big trouble. He has lost the confidence of a lot of BIG money contributors and there is only one way for him to win them back. I’m thinking he gets it done this year, because we have Bama and LSU coming up in the next two years.

Richt went 6-7 last season. McGarity was just hired as AD last year. Who was suppose to give Richt that contract extension everybody keeps mentioning? Not McGarity he just got here during a 6-7 season full of discipline problems. Richt knows he needs to win this year. I thought he was crazy going after the “Dream Team” concept after last season. I thought I was crazy when it actually worked. We all know that Damon Evans didn’t provide any leadership or help to Richt. How many arrest this year under McGarity? I will give Richt this season to seek great improvement, meaning win 9-10 games and don’t get embarrassed by anybody. Plus beat Florida.

Sure it was an embarrassing loss, but don’t read too much into it. Georgia was in a meaningless bowl, not as motivated as UCF, and got beat. Just as you cannot draw much from Louisiana Monroe kicking Saban in his first year at Bama. Look at what Utah did to one of Saban’s best teams- every coach, and I mean every coach is going to periodically have a game where the team’s heart is not in it. That is true unless you believe a motivated Bama team would have lost to Utah or LM.
I expect the Dogs to be competitive, more so than in the last two years, but the SEC is a tough league. Saban is arguably the top coach in the league, and he is batting .250 in SEC titles, one in four years.

No, and that’s probably where they’re at. Confirmation again that it’s really about the brand and the revenue. When you say that it’s not unreasonable to expect to have a winning football program, you’re really saying that other things are more important. Sure we want to be champions every year, but over the long term it’s about the program’s success in generating revenue and contributor interest. Those are long term activities, and as long as they don’t change radically, there’s little reason to disrupt the program and deal with the resulting uncertainties. So, enjoy the games, be a fan, root for the ole alma mater. But don’t think that wins and losses alone will run CMR out of town.

Look at things like punt return yardage, block punts, fake field goals, yards & points given up. 3 and outs. Average starting field position. Penalty yardage. Games lost in the fourth quarter when we had the lead. It’s shocking, and the record shows it.
At the end of the Day, I want to compete for the SEC title, and if Mark is the coach, great. By the way, I’m an Alum ( Class of 76) and had season tickets until 1997.

Richt has said that being the HC at UGA comes with high expectations and that he isn’t happy with the results of last year. Nothing more needs to be said. It has to be done on the field. I am confident Richt knows what he’s doing and this year will be a major improvement. Its my opinion and I bought my tickets so I can yell my heart out supporting the team.
As for the constant criticism of Bobo, this is a team game. Bobo isn’t in this alone, and the offense did pretty well last year despite the issues with the line. I don’t see any reason to keep bashing Bobo and I am looking for great improvement from the defense.
Every year in college is a reloading year. Players move on and new ones come in. I am enthusiastic about our returning core and I believe the recruits will provide competition. As always it will be important to stay healthy and eligible. The teal leadership, especially the seniors, can do a lot to ensure a great season, and Jones and Tyson will provide a lot of leadership for this team.
I also don’t understand all the emphasis on style points. If we beat Boise by a point, its a win. That’s all that matters. Win them all with an SEC schedule, and that team should have a shot at the MNC. I’m not saying this team will win them all but that is a goal that is within the control of the team.
The off season is a time to get excited for the new season and get over the past. If you can’t do those things, I feel sorry for you.

I’m fine with Richt being a great man as long as he is winning or at the very least putting a competitive product on the field. I realize losing AJ Green was a bad break for the team last year, but they shouldn’t totally tank it just because ONE player is out of the lineup. You Richt supporters act like last season was a fluke. How idiotic can you be??? The guy went 9-3 in 2008 with blowout losses to Florida and Bama, and a pathetic showing against a Tech team they should have beaten by at least 2 TD’s. In 2009 they go 7-5 and then 6-6 in 2010, with little or no heat being put under Richt’s butt! Well the time for excuses are over! The guy isn’t getting paid 3 million a year to be our campus minister, he’s getting paid to be out football coach!!! Why is this so hard to understand???? Why shouldn’t Richt be held accountable?? I do want Richt,Bobo and Grantham to do one thing different this year. Give these guys a game plan to give them a chance to win. Quit playing “scripted” football. Quit calling the same play on 3rd and 7 at the 37 yard line. Make the other DC earn his money. Get that defense to play with their hair on fire….and last….start that energy from the coaching staff from the sideline.

@Dawglasville
Having a down year is one thing. For instance, in 2006 we lost to Vandy and Kentucky because of youth, inexperience, and injuries on offense. But the team played hard at the end of the year to finish 9-4. That was a rebuilding year, and UGA was able to rebound to go 11-2 the next season. I’m fine with a rebuilding year as long as we rebound the next year. But when a team goes 9-3, 7-5, and 6-6–that’s not a program that is rebuilding, its a program that is getting worse. 8-4 or 9-4( like in 2006) is the WORST this program should be! Anything less than that should be unacceptable, period!
P.S. I agree about Ray Goff. Yet another example of a guy we kept around WAY too long.

I’ll answer your question with a two of my own.
Would you rather
1. Have Mark Richt win 9 games, keep his job, have the entire fan-base have delusions of granduer about 2012, and then we go back down to 7 wins
OR….
2. Would you rather the team finish 4-8 with Richt getting fired ( yes this means a loss to Tech because that is what it would take): we continue to suck for a few years but by 2014 or 2015 we’re back in the BCS picture?
Both of these scenarios could also happen. If you don’t believe me, look at Auburn. They did well with Tuberville for a time, but fired him after a 5-7 season in 2008. The took a big risk with Gene Chizik( a VERY unpopular hire at the time) and two years later they catch lighting in a bottle with Cam Newton and win a National Title. Who’s to say the same couldn’t happen to us?

Why don’t you tell the fans the truth that CMR basically has a two game season to prove he has turned the program around? I never believe what the hierarchy says…..never!

I think they are all saying what they are supposed to, you shouldn’t throw your coach under the bus to the public. What good can come from them telling the media that their coach is on the hot seat? I also think that like me, they want to see richt succeed because he is a great man and I believe that he can be a great coach. However, the team has been going down hill the past few years with last year obviously being the worst. My own personal feeling is that richt needs a total of 10 wins to keep his job, that is including the bowl game. The schedule this year is very favorable, there are really only about 3-4 tough teams and those teams have their weaknesses also so I don’t see that as an impossible goal.

Im not blind. Look at all of Richt’s teams. The really good ones had good DEFENSES. The offense has been pretty consistent over the last 10 years. The truth is UGA is still recovering from the Willie Martinez debacle. The guy had a terrible eye for talent. And the defensive scheme was down-right offensive. His recruits are almost all gone and thankfully his scheme is too. This is a make or break year. I’m not denying that. What bothers me is the fair-weather fans that think a SEC championship is realistic EVERY SINGLE YEAR! Another thing, UGA wins with a QB that has consecutive years playing on the field in the games… Greene, Shockley, Stafford… Murray? Probably.

Tobias Funke: are you telling me you wouldn’t want to win a National Title? Are you telling me that Richt is the long term solution even though the last three years clearly say otherwise? 7-8 wins is where we will land with Richt from now on. If you’re happy with that, and the usual win over Tech( which means absolutely nothing), then more power to you. If being a lousy fan means expecting more, even if that means we take a step back for a year or two in order to move the program forward, then so be it. I think this program needs a fresh start, just like it did in 2001 when Donnan got fired and Richt got hired. Who cares if we lose to Tech in a rebuilding year?? Bama lost to La Tech Saban’s first year, and then proceeded to go 12-2 and 14-0 after that. And guess what, nobody is talking about that La Tech loss anymore!! UGA absolutely has the resources and talent to be a National player, and with a fresh start they could very easily turn it around. If you don’t think so then you’re the one who is a bad fan my friend.

OK they lost to ULM. My point is so the hell what?? Bama made the move in another direction and were willing to take their licks that first year of rebuilding. Of course getting a new coach is no gurantee that things will get better. But you can’t make huge improvements without taking risks. Marginal risks will get your marginal results.
You’re telling me that Richt is perfectly fine and that all we need to do is make a few tweaks here and there and UGA will be contenders again. And I’m telling you that continuing to keep Richt around is the equivalent of putting new tires on a car with a bad transmission. When the transmission is bad, you’re better off getting a new vehicle instead of continuing to pour money into an old one. I believe we have come to that point with Mark Richt. And yes I think there are coaches out there that could have done better than 7-5 and 6-6 the last 2 years.
And I don’t know what kind of leadership books you have been reading, but it is ABSOLUTELY better/cheaper/smarter to fire an underperforming employee than it is to continue to pour money into them in the hopes that they get better. I can’t think of a single successful business that accepts underperformance from anyone!!! I am now officially done talking to you.

So from 2000 – 2004 Penn State went 26-33 under one of the greatest coaches in football history (the worst of those years Penn State was 3-9). According to the growing noise from the critics, the game had passed him by. So in 2005 Penn State goes 11-1 and wins the Big Ten. Life runs in cycles particularly if you compete at the highest levels in whatever endeavor in life with a bunch of other talented and driven people trying to out perform you. A lot must go right each and every year including just plain getting lucky now and again. Those of us that have competed in the SEC understand this. Coach Richt should have job as long as he wants it.

Ok I have read every article you posted about Adams expectations from Richt, but honestly, how long do the UGA fan base have to wait before we see another SEC and National championship? I am totally behind Richt because he is a wonderful coach; however, I am totally behind finding a new OC because Bobo is not the right person for the job and that has been proven time and time again. UGA shouldn’t be complacent with just winning 9 or 10 games a year or just having a winning program. They should want a championship team every year and even if they don’t get a championship every year they will not be far off from getting one from time to time.
I have been a dawg fan since I was 9 when I first started playing football and watching them play every saturday with my dad; however, since then the only thing that people know about UGA is that they won two conference championship, we send a lot of players to the league, and we get our tail handed to us by UF. My buddy’s who are UF fans couldn’t call it better “UGA is ok with winning and if they have a winning season they are fine.” That is exactly true based on one or your comments and a statement from Adams. JB’s quote: ” I’ve have posted that is all Adams cares about. 9, maybe 10 wins and a decent bowl is just fine by him.” That is the reason I feel that UGA could go for the nationals every now and again but as everything it starts at the top. If the president is ok with just winning then everyone below him is ok with just winning; however, if the president demands for a championship caliber team then the everyone below him is going to follow in his direction. How come you have some fans that would like to see UGA bring home a national championship every once and awhile get told to jump off the band wagon or called untrue fans of dawg nation because they want a championship brought back to Athens? Look at all the teams in the SEC that won nationals everyone fans, school officials, coaches, players all wanted it and again based on the statement made by Adams we just have to settle with just winning 9 or 10 games. UGA will forever be my team but I would like to say that dawgs beat UF again and that national championship trophy looks good sitting in UGA’s trophy case. Thats all I want and I am pretty sure that every other fan would like the same.

Of course they’d say that preseason!!! Even Tech’s AD said similar things at the start of basketball season and we all know how that ended regardless of the HUGE buyout. If Richt does not win a minimal 9 games with this softest of UGA schedules he needs to be canned. LSU and Bama aren’t on our schedule. Boise is in our backyard and while they play hard certainly have nowhere near as much talent…and does anyone really expect us to lose to the triple option anytime soon??? There are few doubts on our schedule (UF and USC)! Auburn lost everybody. Tennessee is still far off challenging to win the EAST much less the overall SEC. Lose to Vandy or KY an he should be fired immediately. My goodness can anyone truly find three losses on the schedule? Only if we underperform yet again….

It was good to see the Diamond Dawg’s starting left-hander, Alex Wood pitch a complete game yesterday, helping UGA beat Auburn 3-2 to stay alive in the SEC Tournament.
Hopefully we can win again tonight in our 3-win game quest to advance to an at-large bid to an NCAA regional tournament. Go Diamond Dawgs!

It’s a sad day when the Bulldog Nation is happy with mediocrity. One of the early posters said that heads will roll if we don’t finish at least second in the East. We have come a long way from the early years of the Richt era when a National Championship was our goal. We are now pulling for this lame ass coach to lead us to second in the East? $3 million gets us second in the East and you Richt suck-ups are happy? Pathetic.

Were there not 11 arrest of players in 2010? Well over 40 arrested players since 2005? How many scholarship players do we lose each year out of a signing class? eight or nine? Yet these folks are insinuating the program is run properly????

Some on here think anything short of a national championship is mediocrity. While a NC would be great, I happen to believe winning an SEC title is quite an accomplishment. Win enough of those, and the NCs will eventually come.
I know of no UGA fan that is happy with the last two years. Richt will either turn it around in the next couple of years or we will be breaking in a new coach, but to fire him because he has not won a NC is setting the bar rather high.
Here is a partial list of coaches that could not meet that criterion, and never won a national championship until they had coached several years past Mark Richt’s ten: John Wooden, Bear Bryant, Tom Osborne, Joe Paterno, Vince Dooley, Bobby Bowden.
Good thing some of these posters were not in charge of hiring and firing, or some great careers would have been nipped in the bud.

Jorts, considering Mark Richt has a winning record against every SEC opponent other than Florida and is tied with LSU same number of conference titles as Florida and Auburn with 2 SEC titles over the past 10 years shows you don’t know what you’re talking about. Every SEC program has down periods, the fact that no team since 97-98 Tenn. has won back to back title speaks volumes for the competitiveness in the SEC.

They did Joey because that worked well with thier spread type offense, which is completely different than our traditional pro set.
Thier reason for running a hurry up is stlye, which is completely different than why we used to do it, which was to wear down the other guys who werent substituting as fast as we were. That doesn’t exist anymore because of the rule chance.

What do you know about this program,NOTHING. Coach Richt is a great coach who had a couple of down years. One problem was Willie & his staff, the other was Coach Van getting comfortable. They will be better this year, I do not know by how much. Our OL & WR are my biggest concerns. The defense will be better, LB’s will be better. So why don’t you let all the negative hot air you have & make some positive noise at our games. You want to continue whining, then whine about our so-called fans that show up at games & DO NOT make any noise to pump our coaches & players up. Our loyal fans just want to whine & whine. Get behind our coaching staff & players & see what that might do.

82 wins over the first eight seasons.
2 SEC championships. A # 2 national ranking to finish 2007.
2 1st in the East.
2 2nd in the East. That’s finishing no worst than 2nd place in 6 out of his first eight years.
The defense showed improvement in the first year of coach Granthams 3-4 defense and that while not having several key types of players for his system. I look for Ga to have a defense that will challenge for the best in the SEC in 2011 and if that happens, the sky is the limit.
The strength and conditioning program is doing very well, with the O-line gaining 100lbs and the D-line gaining 103 lbs of muscle while while losing body fat.
There have been no arrests of players this year, who else in the SEC can say that, not Auburn as they are already leading the Fulmer cup standings by (ASTRONOMICAL PROPORTIONS) with a score that may never be matached, not Alabama, not LSU, not SC,etc
There will be very few coaches who have a better 10 year SEC record, if any, than what Richt has put together, and most will be long gone before they even make it that long.
I can’t wait till the season get’s started, because the tables are about to turn and if you’re a dawg fan, it’s gonna be a fun year.

To all of the outstanding folks, graduates of UGA or just supposedly fans,
Who do you people want as the coach of UGA if not CMR? The definition of a loser is one that sees a problem but only complains and offers no solutions. A dreamer think every year, their team should be on top and if not, make a change.
Most of us, myself included do not have 1/10th the knowledge that CMR has about football and probably about life in general. You think that putting together a team composed of 85 individuals of vastly different backgrounds and abilities is an easy task. You try to compare your job, to his job, when his is vastly harder than your’s will ever be.
Got a better offensive game plan, pass it on, if you think he is such a failure. Apply for the job he has if you know so much about what it takes to run the program. Criticize him for his beliefs and the fact that he tries to mold a lot of these young men into successful people for the game of life, if it makes you feel better.
I don’t care if you are a graduate or just an average fan. If you can not offer solutions, then why don’t you just try supporting the coach and the team, rather than being critical of anything they do, will do or have done. If not, why don’t you just go and cheer for the other team, because UGA doesn’t need you.

These players he won with were ga fans from the time they were born. These players were not a dream team!!!!!!!!Stinchomb and Pollack are gone and we have no OL or DL. We have no coaching or discipline on the team. How long do you think fans and alumni are going to put up with the soft play in the sec of MR. The fact of the matter is for the last 4 years ga has not been ready to play snot nose sec football. We would have a NC if with Saban. It is about the trenches in football.

Here’s the deal. Richt as Mr. Nice Guy is going to last up until the Boise kickoff. Then it’s put up or shut up. And another major point to remember, Richt has lost 8 times out of 10 to Florida. That’s something all of the homers on this blog need to know that McGarity will take heavily into account. What else is the new AD going to say at this point? Let losing to the Gators continue, and Richt will be out of town faster than you can say Muschamp. Richt either needs to start performing on a higher level or turn in his whistle. As the saying goes, winning talks and b.s. walks. Enough of these ninth and tenth chances. Being a great person does not automatically translate into wins.

The national magazines seem to all think Boise State is a top 5 team. The ones I’ve read, including Lindy’s and Athlon, are high on UGA but much higher on BSU. It appears the so-called “experts” all believe Boise State will win the opener. If that does happen, I don’t see us bouncing back unless team attitude is much better than last two years. We just have not shown any fight lately, especially when adversity hits. If this year’s team plays hard all the time and represents the University well, I will be pleased. If they don’t, a change will need to be made.

Not sure how I’d feel if the same situation was going on in Gainesvile.
Richt had GREAT success ealry in his tenure and he certainly is the type of person that anyone would want to be the face of their program.
Then you have a 3 year skid that was capped off by a bowl loss to a so-called “second tier” team. That ended up being the first losing season in 15 years. In the same year you had the Fulmer Cup “victory” because of all the arrests (albeit most of them petty) that caused public embarassment to the UGA faithful.
I see both sides and I honestly don’t know where I’d stand if it was the Gators. The infighting amongst the UGA faithful seems to be reaching a fevered pitch. Something needs to give soon or this could get even worse. For ya’lls sakes, I hope Coach Richt can turn things around.

As a long time fan and follower of UGA football I would hope that you’re not content paying someone nearly 3M a year to win 8 or 9 games. Fact……..Richt’s been at UGA for 10 years and still no NC despite having players the caliber of Stafford, Moreno, A.J. Green, Thomas Davis, Odell Thurman, David Pollack, etc., and we’re still the “whipping post” for the Gators, Tide, etc. Look what both Saban and Meyer accomplished in a lot less time; 3 NC’s between the two of them. Richt can recruit, but you gotta be able to coach em. Hopefully all these changes being implemented are going to bear fruit. I think his current contract runs another 3 years, and if he ain’t got it together by then…..its time to cut your losses.

That is why we are losers ten years down the road. UGA football is in shambles by any quantitative or qualitative measure. Yet all these ignorant homers want to keep da Preacha Man and run the ship right into the iceburg. 2-8 against Florida, with three of those losses coming against some of the poorest teams they’ve had since the 80s. 7-9 against the SEC in the past two years, 11-12 against real competition when you take out the non-BCS conference cupcakes. And a slew of off-field problems. I don’t buy it, this sounds like the dreaded vote of confidence. There’s a football season ahead – what are Admans and McGarity supposed to say?

I am glad the board is looking at long term plans instead of short term like ignorant fans. Richt is a great coach and is has won more games than any coach in the SEC. We can’t be # 1 every year! They speak of oversigning and greyshirting as evil while UF and UGA lead the world in arrest!!! Using the county jail to cull players is the plan of these two fine colleges. Just STFU about greyshirtting and oversigning until you can keep you players out of jail. Do these fine educated people every think before they speak? You can be damn ignorant to life and have a PHD.

MR can not fix a sunken ship in one season. We have to run the ball to make a living in the SEC. MR does not have a OL or a FB. It is going to be a long season. We start with Boise State. Boise is going to pick the dawgs apart with our weak secondary. New lbs, safeties suck, no proven dl, we can not stop the run. Jenkins and Geathers are not our saviors.

No support for CMR from me. Remember dog fans you can love the school and the team and still wish CMR would go away. CMR teams have been trending downwards for 4 years. He has been an absent CEO and now is butt is on the hot seat and he’s more involved. He has had discpline issues, a bad Def-coor. who hung around way too long, O-depth has been a problem it seems like forever, he will not play players early, etc. etc. However he is a fine Chrisitan man, as if that has any thing to do with wins and losses.

As stated, it is not the same as years ago when there were dominating teams….CMR has had several winning seasons, which few colleges can really boast of anymore… there has been a flux of off-field incidents with athletes, which with the caliber of recruiting almost predicts the character of these people off the field (hard to change a kid’s character overnight….this will take stronger leadership within the team members than coaches)…. the truism is that GA fans are disappointed not to have a national championship or two for the decade… that is understandable… but, remember there again is little dominance anymore… there are a lot of schools with alums and fans that would trade GA any day of the week… no school can sustain very long and it is a vicious cycle… there were two years in the mid-60’s when the BEAR had 6-5 seasons and they were ready to burn him at the stake, where the drugs, long hair, etc were influencing everything around him and everywhere… if you look at the years after that, there is no question that a program will cycle out when there is a proven winner… Richt has proven himself a winner…he is no BRYANT, but does not need to be to succeed… he has the ingredients that it takes… a program really fails when the alums and fans do not support a program rebuilding and that is the biggest GA fault… the whiny attitudes will only bring your program down… would you do your best in any environment when the people who are supposed to be your best supporters continually whine and bitch and give you an automatic ‘thumbs down’…. we all need affirmation from those who we perform for, no matter the stage..!!!!

These same people hired Evan. I thought I would never say this but I see more intensity in the Tech program than I do the Georgia football program. This is not good because at Tech we purposely try to put the whole person in the equation which is not always the formula of winning but matches our purpose. At Georgia it is just plain lack of focus. The results are not intended nor expected. No athlete is handicapped getting into Georgia or no more than any SEC school. Do you really believe that Spurrier or Saban or a half dozen other coaches in the SEC with the same talent as Georgia’s couldn’t get better results. Most all have won a national championship with less since the one won by Georgia. I think at the other schools they can figure out who doesn’t have legal driver’s licences and actually do something about it. The team and the assistant coaches ,at other SEC schools, just work harder. Some people including ex players thought Dooley was a jerk, but I will tell you one thing he was smart and he was mean and we didn’t want to play him. We got one of his legacies at Tech through Erk Russell’s side of the family, he is real stick around and you will see. Georgia invented good coaching in this modern era. Look at all these programs in the SEC and you will see Dooley’s fingerprints. Your arch rival Florida just hire one and you are staring at his son at Tennessee, lots of good assistants out there too. I hate to say it but our state school desires better. When you wake up Smart will be head coach at Mississippi and that will only leave Ky. and Vandy as schools you can beat.

2 championships in the last decade is up there with Auburn and Alabama. Only LSU and Florida exceed. The only real issue is 3-20 against Fla. Fix that and all is good. I think the world of Richt as a man and think he is a solid coach but I am afraid the OL recruiting will be his demise as coach. Too many 5 stars with speed and not enough horses up front or guys who can tackle. Yes, I know you cannot coach speed, but it does you no good when you are on your back.

#3 I will help the guys in Athens; If Richt continues to lose to FL and has more than 3 losses this yr we should find someone else as the following programs did when their coaching staff continued to lose and lose to rival teams all the time
USC
Alabama
FL
Ohio State
Texas
Michigan
To name a few
And yes losing to FL defines who you are when you lose out on a chance to play for the national title because you lost to FL in 2002. As well as watching them year after year play for the SEC championship

All good things being said and witnessed by the key players in the organization and chain of command. However, with fees going up, economic issues and 4 dissppointing seasons in a row that has somehow produced over a dozen first and second round NFL draft selections, there is definitly something missing in the formula. This is occurring while other institutions in and outside the league have upgraded various aspects of their programs.
The facts are facts and the UGA program has taken a few steps back during this latest run. Will the changes made help the program? Only time will tell.

“a crack appears”…Like most UGA fans I was excited over coach Richt’s early success. We had found “Moses” to lead Georgia through the football wilderness to the mountain top. It is difficult to find fault with an average of 10 wins a season.
A game stands out in my mind that caused me concern, about Moses. In a bowl game in Atlanta between UGA and West Virginia.. six(?) years ago. UGA falls behind in the 1st half, but came back strong in the second half. The defenses on both teams disappeared and both offenses were scoring with ease. With the score close, it was clear that the team with the last scoring opportunity would likely be the winner. With less that 3 minutes left in the game, UGA’s defense prevents West Virginia from making a 1st down and sets up a punting situation on 4th down. West Virginia sets up to punt and I screamed fake. West Virginia faked the punt, recovered the ball, scored and won the game with that score. I’m sure the coaching staff had considered the fake punt as a possibility, but to me it appeared that UGA was totally surprised.

We will see if Richt still has their full faith and confidence if he goes 0-2 the first two games of the upcomming season, especially if one is a nationally televised beatdown. We all know that “expressions of confidence” won’t mean a damn thing if there are 4 or 5 loses again this year. In addition another possible loss to FL won’t help matters either. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, Richt will be on the “hot seat” this season.

It appears that Adams, McGarity & the rest are glad Richt acted with some urgency, recruited well, made a change or two and didn’t rest on his laurels. That’s what they wanted to see — I do not buy those “body of work” quotes for a minute. I have no expectations this season, other than I do not think we have a prayer in hell of beating Boise unless our time of possession is 40 minutes.
And Adams, 15 yard penalty for bull—t. You have never done anything without consulting the AD? Are you kidding me? The way you dealt under the table with Donnan on your own without getting Vince involved? Please.

You must believe in the Dawgs!!!!!!!! Coach Richt is a man of outstanding quality. As Scripture states, “He who is without sin cast the first stone.” He who has never had a bad couple of years in their life has never trully lived. We learn and go forward!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a feeling at Tom’s company, he does not hire and fire based on the hurts egos of anonymous and questionable customers. As long as your department is the most profitable segment on the industry, I suspect you are safe.
Now you miss miss out on certain bonuses based on leaderboards, and when you fail to meet HIS criteria, based on several factors important to HIM, or he feels that his company is better served investing in an uncertain new direction…you might have a problem. That probably will be driven by real customers dropping off.
Please don’t insult Tom with your amateur “corporate” refences that completely ignore how they operate.
Expectations can do wonders

Complacency can set in at the very, very top of any organization. It hasin prior years at UGA. Dr. Adams felt totally happy with his former AD and that set the tone and it was downhill from there. The players had no respect for anything. That caused huge rifts on the team, which led to 8-5 crap and 6-7 disasters. UGA was a divided camp top to bottom.
Now? UGA top to bottom has no such luxury. ALL at the U of Georgia are feeling the pressure to win and win in a fashion that confirms a great season and confirms concretely that CMR should remain at the helm. This means maybe a loss to Boise with 2 SEC losses but somehow, UGA could make the Dome as the East Champ or Co Champ. This likely is our best shot ………… 9-3 with the season like I describe here, is CMR’s best shot.
A 10-2 thing with an outright trip to the Dome is optimum but it is unlikely.
Icing on the 9-3 cake, mimimally a Capital One Bowl trip. A Liberty Bowl or even Outback Bowl or Chic Fil A would be a major let down, but time will tell. This season needs to point toward a fabulous future, not just a holding on and we got lucky and limped into the Outback Bowl type of year.

Recall the UGA- Florida game back in 05 or 06. UGA should have won it, although DJ was out with a knee. Florida with maybe 1:20 on the clock lines up to punt at their 40 and they FAKED IT and ran about 30 yds to a first down and then went on to win. At the time, I am positive UGA was leading that game up until the fake punt and we simply laid down mentally.
THAT GAME and the UWVA game ticked me off about or game readiness from a mental standpoint. There are others too that I could conjure up.
2011 is the year.

OK, athletic board, what part of the following instills confidence in CMR?
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — During a timeout in the waning minutes and with the Georgia Bulldogs already in range for a game-winning field goal, Colorado defensive coordinator Ron Collins decided to turn linebacker B.J. Beatty loose on a blitz.
“I told him, ‘Let’s run it,”‘ Beatty said. “Because we knew they were going to try to run the ball……
Lining up with the Buffs clinging to a 29-27 lead, Beatty was just hoping for the Bulldogs to run the ball, and sure enough, it played out exactly like he envisioned…..
It’s not that often you see a crowd go crazy over beating a team that’s 1-4…..
But it does reveal how down in the dumps they are over their first four-game slide since 1990.
Not even the spectacular return of Georgia wide receiver A.J. Green from a four-game suspension could halt the Bulldogs’ fall……
but he didn’t catch another pass after his 50-yard grab on the third snap after halftime, spending plenty of time on the sideline……..
They methodically moved downfield and had first-and-10 at the Buffs 27 when Richt called for a run up the middle.
“That’s as basic of a play as we’ve got,” Richt said……
Blair Walsh’s…. was warming up on the sideline about to go in for a potential game-winner when Beatty stripped the ball and the game away from the Bulldogs, who are 1-4 for the first time since 1993.
“Man, it’s tough,” Green said. “I’ve never been 1-4 in my life.”

Florida did convert a fake punt in that game but it was midway 3rd quarter. They ended up punting it anyway a few plays later. They were also leading the game at that point. Georgia never had the lead in that game.
Not sure what laying down means, I was at the game and it seemed to me they tried very hard till the end. Gave up 14 quick, stop UF from scoring again, and fought back to get a couple of shots at it.
As I recall the 2 missed FG by normally reliable Couto was a much bigger part of the equation.

We would have scored atleast 30 points against UF and blown them out that year if DJ Shockley hadn’t been hurt and then we would have played for the BCS Championship.

Interesting take. No doubt DJ woudnt have made a 5 point difference. And then he rolls into the Auburn game shy high and not “recovering”. Good enough for one point probably. There were 2 previously higher ranked undefeated teams in the MNC game that year as I recall, but certainly UGA would have been in that discussion. Maybe leapfrogged. Never really considered that about the 2005 teams. I guess technically that team was as deserving as LSU’s last trip.

I am excited about this year. I am pulling so hard for Mark Rict to pull off a great season and get an extension. Because, I want him to remain the face of UGA football. He really makes me proud to be a UGA fan. I expect UGA to be in the hunt for the East every year and get to the dome 3 or more times a decade. No that’s not settleing. I think any SEC school would be proud of a record like that. But doing it with a guy like Mark Rict, makes it even better. Go Dawgs

Had all of these folks that want Richt fired had their way in 1979, Dooley would have been fired the season before the national championship.

1979? Try would have been fired 3 times by then. 1979 does make the point with added significance though.

CMR: 2011 Coach of the year and all the morons that want him fired will shut up.
From 2002 -2007 I was worried he would leave for another school.
GOOD MAN, GOOD Coach, GOOD DAWG !!!.
GOOO DAAAWGS, GOOO CMR.
Dawgs will back in the hunt.
Players make plays..we lacked that the last two years.
If Moreno and Stafford had come back in 2009 we would have been talking only about last year as a rebuilding year because we would have won 2-4 more games with those two leading the offense in 2009.
