Mark Richt said the decision of sell his second home on Lake Hartwell was in order to be able to give more to the less fortunate. (AJC photo by Curtis Comption)
I had to laugh earlier today when a colleague at work pointed out that the independent blog “SportsByBrooks” was reporting that Mark Richt had placed his Lake Hartwell home up for sale.
Predictably, “Brooks” — aka freelance journalist Brooks Melchior, 43, of Los Angeles — makes the leap that Richt selling off his property surely must mean that Richt is in real trouble as the head football coach of the Georgia Bulldogs.
Writes Brooks: “Normally, I don’t subscribe to a coach putting a home up for sale as a sign of anything, but in this case, it might be applicable. . . . Richt doesn’t strike me as a guy out to flip houses, so I think it’s reasonable to surmise that last year’s 6-7 record — and the subsequent outcry emanating from Athens — may have something to do with the coach making over his real estate portfolio.”
I found this funny because Richt told me several weeks ago that he and his wife had decided to place their second home on the market and he told me why. He revealed that to me in an off-the-record meeting we had shortly after I had been placed back on the UGA beat. Actually, I initiated the discussion when I told Richt that my wife and I were considering downsizing but were afraid we would take too much of a financial hit with the economic times being what they are. Richt told me then what he and Katharyn were doing and actually predicted what the reaction would be if and when it went public.
With the cat out of the bag, so to speak, I called Richt Wednesday and asked him to explain again — this time on the record — what he and wife were thinking when they decided to sell the lakehouse. I’ll just let him tell it:
“Within the last year, I read this book, “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns. He’s the president of World Vision, U.S. I think people understand who World Vision is but, basically, they help the poor. Through their organization, you can help children, you can help build wells, you can buy them donkeys, whatever people need. World Vision helps people across the world. Well, anyway, there was a lot of statistical data in there about the amount of people that live on a dollar a day around this world. Billions of people. So I’m reading this book and it really affected me. It helped me realize that what we have is way more than we need and that our ability to give is hindered by this property. I guess that’s the best way to tell you. We just wanted to be in a better position to give and bless people that don’t have anything. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.”
The house and surrounding acreage was listed for $1.99 million on May 17. Richt had the Hart County home built in 2009, about the time his oldest son Jon Richt signed a scholarship to play football at nearby Clemson University. Jon Richt transferred to Mars Hill College shortly after Tommy Bowden was dismissed as Clemson’s coach.
Richt makes more than $3 million a year as Georgia’s coach and has earned more than $25 million in income from UGA since being hired in 2001. So it’s not like he can no longer afford it or is concerned that, without the Georgia job, eventually won’t be able to.
“Our ability to own this home, to have this home, that’s not an issue,” Richt said Wednesday. “It has absolutely nothing to do with anything that has to do with football. It has to do my wife’s desire and my desire to give.
“I was actually compelled to do this much earlier,” he added. “I made the decision to do it a while ago but I didn’t want to do it during the season or during recruiting because I knew it would be blown out of proportion. But it’s been on my heart for a long time, so we’re just going ahead and doing it.”
As for the book that served as Richt’s inspiration, you can read about it HERE. Stearns writes that 40 percent of the world’s population lives on less than $2 a day and 15 percent of the world’s people, about 1 billion people, live on less than $1 a day. The United States, on average, lives on $105 a day, the book claims.
“I’d challenge anybody to read this book and not be affected by it, Richt said. “We just live in such wealth here in America. And I’m talking about everybody. Anybody who’s making 30 grand a year is extremely wealthy compared to rest of the people in the world. These kids, these families will walk two or three miles, half a day or more, to get water that’s really not healthy. They’re drinking stuff that’s not safe for them. Then children die of AIDS, they die of malaria and they die of dehydration. Kids end up dying or the parents die and they’ve got nothing.
“This book just talks about how much of that is going on around the world and, if it was sitting right outside our door, what would we do about it? It’s a very compelling book. Compelling enough for me to say, ‘you know what, I don’t want to pour money into a home like that when I can use it for better things, for eternal things.’ It was just very alarming to find out what’s going on out there and we need to do something about it.”
As has been Richt’s style, he’s doing more about it than selling off his property. He and his family are taking a trip to Honduras this summer with World Vision to observe and assist in the construction of water wells.
As for the SportsbyBrooks report and the predictable assumptions made by it, Richt laughed and said “maybe some good will come from it.”
“If this situation gets people to read this book and gets people more interested in helping the poor, then I’m happy about it,” he said. “I hope other people respond. It’s a very compelling book and if people read it, I think they’ll understand where I’m coming from.”

Gotta love Coach Richt..he is a man of principle and when push comes to shove, he’ll do what’s right, regardless of the consequences. He is a true Christian. The haters will say what they want, but he’s a really good guy who lives what he believes. While I’m a UGA fan and want to see them win so badly, there are bigger things in life. Kudos to you coach Richt.

If you knew Mark as I do, you would not doubt for a moment his commitment to his beliefs.
That is also why I know how much all the arrests and bad publicity brought upon UGA by a few of his players has hurt well beyond anything to do with football. The disconnect between this sincere gentleman and the behavior of some of his football players has been gut wrenching.
I will not be surprised in the least if Mark eventually walks away from coaching because partly due to this disconnect. Mark and his wife have much bigger and more important “fish to fry” in their world than being a coach and making a lot of money.

Great Story! Not sure that it needs to be a blogged story, I am sure the dead beats will follow up with some crazy negative blogs. CMR will be the coach at UGA for years to come, mark it down! Football in the big picture of life is nothing. And too, how often do you really use a lake house? They are like pool tables, swimming pools, boats, and motorcyles. Never used.

Of course, I hope Tech wins on the field, but UGa has a winner as a coach and a man. As a UGa fan I too have lost respect for Coach Richt when he used the language that he did in Macon. Mark not only needs to ask forgivennss from God, but to all the Bulldog nation. If he is the Christian he says he is he needs to renew his fellowship with God or better said to rededicate his life. I can only wonder if he is a babe in Christ or not even be a Christian at all. I enjoy sports, but all the jargon that goes with it makes me want to give it up altogether. The longer i live I realize there is something greater than winn and loses.

If you’re such a ’smart’dawg, you need to show the world where CMR’s contract states, “win football games, period.” I personally guarantee it is not there… but it does, in fact, state many other responsibilities expected that are far and away more important than just “win football games.” Like graduation, building character, recruiting ethically (within NCAA guidelines), etc. It’s crazies like you who have simple-minded expectations of just “win football games.”

His job is to lead and hire men to help him lead 85 scholarship players to a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. 13 ARRESTS IN 2010. I can find 2000 good Christian men between Lawrenceville and Athens that could do better. There is a preacher in Dacula that has 15,000 people in his congregation and I bet less than 13 got arrested and he did it for far less than 3 million.
It is amazing that God only asks for 10% but Adams and Richt want their followers to be taxed more.

I suspect there is a lot of gnawing and gnashing of teeth (sorry for the hyperbole) from those that hate Richt and Chrisitianity after reading an article such as this. It’s not about the Bulldogs, it is about our purpose. Unfortunately, many have a hard time reconciling Chrisitanity and success in the business world, coaching profession, etc.
The truth is that Richt’s Chrisitan faith is not a detriment to translating success on the field, just as in any other career. It is an asset when purposefully applied to emulate Christ. There have been many examples of strong Christian men that coached football on every level (Tom Landry comes to mind as a well known Christian).
Anyway, Mark Richt’s sacrifice is a good example for the young, impressionable players that he coaches and it is a considerable reason why moms and dads entrust their kids to him for this season of their lives.

To make a negative comment about one word that CMR used is taking self-rightiousness to an all-time low. One of the worst cussers I’ve ever know was a monk who was the prior of a monastery that treated lepers in Liberia. He came to the states every year begging on the streets for old clothes, shoes, furniture – castoffs of our wealth – and the people in Liberia thought everything he brought back was from a royal household.
The monk was a man of great faith, lived a life of poverty and helped thousands of people. He always apologized for his language, but he never took his eye of his life’s prize: helping people in need.

As a Christian I admire Coach Richt for his very strong faith and beliefs. However I would like to see him focus on the mission of his team more and people in third world countries less. He cannot save all of the unfortunate people, but he could spend more time with his players to make them better men and better football players. In turn they could collectively have a bigger christian influence on making this a better place for all people. If he wins National Championships his voice will be ten fold stronger and he will then get a raise and he can give more money.

@RAMtOUGH………You sir are a morn. Mett was charged with sexual battery, and was kicked off the team after he lied to CMR about the incident. Ealey was nothing but an underachieving, entitled cancer. Trust me, a lot of players were happy to see him leave. Harmon couldn’t read a book, his grades were awful, which is why he is no longer a Dawg. Lastly, I’m good friends with Logan and I can assure you that he has no ill feelings towards Richt or UGA. He just happened to be on campus with two 5-star quarterbacks (Stafford and Murray). Logan is a DGD and an even better person. I didn’t realize saying “hell” was facilitated by a “dark side”. Your a douche bag, congrats

So glad Richt is our coach and I hope the AD and University realize how fine a coach he is. Our APR is great. He shows athletes how to be good men. I wish people who are so short sighted would step back and realize that character is as important as wins. He will win a NC and it could be at UGA or if the shortsighted run him off it will be somewhere else.

[...] Mark Richt sells Lake Hartwell property — I was emailed this article earlier today by a colleague. When I first started reading it, I was thinking that maybe he’d lost his marbles sending this to me… the article wasn’t about social media, or blogs, or World Vision, or charity work, or home decor or spaghetti — my typical interests. Then I saw this paragraph about half way through the post: “Within the last year, I read this book, “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.” [...]

This is not about football wins or loses and I can promise you that our good Lord cares nothing about wins or loses on the football field…but thats your choice to live with….AS some others have noted, I also know the man and his family and see his father-n-law quite often…If want to question his Coaching, thats fine, but when you attack him and his family for their beliefs, says something about the person making those remarks…Think about that before you send out a blog comment..Would you want the same for your family, and please don’t bring up the amount of money he makes, the article is about a Man that feels led to make a difference in lives where he can…Many more of us should consider how fortunate we are and do more, and I include myself in that too….go dawgs and Coach Richt

He will be lucky to get 700k for his Lake Hartwell home. I live a few houses up from his and let me say that selling price is way off. On the same street, with a similar home on 40 acres just sold for 1.9 million. Mark’s home is on maybe 2 acres. But not to worry…he was given the land by a local man and most of the building materials were donated. He should walk away with a wheelbarrow full of cash that he can donate.

To “Not a real coach, is he?”: You say that “Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Miles and Spurrier and other represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 100:1.
Saban cheats, Miles is a lucky buffoon, and Spurrier has averaged 6 win seasons since he was run out of the NFL and started coaching at SC. That’s you definition of excellence? And I don’t know where you get the 100:1 odds of his winning the SEC. The oddsmakers have him between 30:1 and 50:1to win the NC.

Poverty is a much more complicated issue than sending a check to World Vision and spending a few days in Honduras. In most countries, poverty will remain as long as infrastructure (lie roads/electricity) lacks or corruption in government lingers (Dictators do not like for people to start new businesses as they prefer monopolies). Then all you need is the know how, there is enough know how in the U.S., that other countries could dramatically improve just by emulating the U.S know how. U.S., Sweden, Switzerland, Denmark, all have infrastructure and a generally not corrupt government, and all have plenty of know how. But they are unusual.

But, Chip you wrongly characterized your conversation with Richt and created ill will toward the man for no good reason.
The title of this article is misleading. Nowhere is Richt quoted as saying his listing of his property for sale has anything to do with religion or being a christian. Richt simply says he wants to downsize his expenses allowing him to donate more to charity.
Change the title to “Mark Richt says decision to sell Lake Hartwell property was philanthropy motivated” and this blog would not have degenerated into such a cesspool………….well, hopefully at least not quite as quickly as it did.

I really doubt that if CMR goes on a mission trip for a week or two in the summer is really going to hurt him when it comes to game planning and watching film. Just in case you were wondering…coaches dont just sit in their office all summer and watch film. The last thing you should worry about is if CMR takes sometime to himself and goes on a mission trip because like everyone else,he can use some time away from his job. But, in my opinion, to be critical of that fact in this article’s comments is not the right venue. I see it only as a commendable article on the Richt family and their laudable efforts to set their course to help the less fortunate in the world.
Considering some of the comments I’ve read here, Chip, it might have been better to have just said ‘No Comments’ and let all enjoy reading of this man and his family’s good intentions.
The venom could continue on another day. Sorry to sound so negative with this post, but some of these comments are quite disturbing at best. Just my two cents.
Hope you don’t ban me for venting, but I feel better now for doing so. .. Go Dawgs!

Stay Classy Coach. We love you! I attend church with him and his heart is in the right place. Whether its football or faith. God comes first…family comes second…..football. Thats a principle that has stood tested and tried with everyone who will practice it. If you hate a man because he loves what he does…even though you don’t agree you will find out the fast enough the priorities in your life are messed up without God first and foremost of anything and everything.

Never said I did speak for all Dawg fans. But for $3 million a year, I think Mark should worry a little more about the program than his missionary work. I don’t care if a person is a Christian. I care when religion begins to effect your work, particularly if I’m paying you multi-millions a year for that work. If being a good Christian and helping the poor means more to you than your job, then I welcome you to GTFO and go be a preacher, and I’ll get someone in here who WILL do the job. Being pious doesn’t mean you get to ignore your everyday responsibilities. “I was too busy building houses for the poor to finish that quarterly report” is not a legitimate excuse at the office, no matter how morally upstanding it might be.

To all you haters who STILL only care about being in the top 10 EVERY year……GROW UP YOU LITTLE SELFISH PATHETIC HUMAN BEINGS. Richt and UGA together for 20 years to come. BANK on it. You haters only hate but we supporters actually pray for our coach and that is the most powerful thing we have in our possession on this earth in this life. More powerful than the press and media! More powerful than selfish ignorant fans who ONLY care about wins when as pointed out in this article…..there are MUCH more important things in this life than winning 10 or more football games EVERY year. You mean he cannot sell his house and help poor people because he did not win 10 games last year? Do you hear yourself? I do not care if you are a billionaire who runs the largest company of governement or organization on 2 planets, you NEVER do NOT WORRY about HELPING the LEAST AMONG US! You go live on LESS than a dollar a day. You are a disgrace to the human race and may you lose all your wealth and see the light and see how IMPORTANT UGA football winning is in the big picture. MArk Richt spends MORE time on UGA football than you do on ANYTHING in your pathetic life combined. How can you make the stupid comments you just made?! Some people just need to shutup and lets us think they have any intelligence. When you are doing without food you would much rather want Richt spending some money and time to help. That is the PROBLEM with this world, it is all about me and how much I can get and how many games my favorite teams wins and what car I have and clothes and power, prestige, things, stuff and it is BACKWARD. YOU should HELP and so should everyone including Mark Richt, OSAMA OBAMA, ALL PLAYERS and COACHES, AD’S Presidents, governors, EVERYONE including those who get paid 50 million a year whether they had a GOOD OR BAD YEAR. You are a GREAT example of what is wrong with your city, state, country and world! You cant hold Mark Richt’s nothing. These are some of the most negative people around. All you are concerned about is winning football games, I like to win them too!!! But most of you don’t know one thing about college football, all you know is get rid of Coach Richt. I was there when VD coached & if he hadn’t had Herschal Walker they would have not won the NC. Also, his record was not even close to Coach Richt’s his 1st ten years, Ray Goff & Jim Donnan did not have the record Coach Richt has. If all you so called DAWG fans would learn the ins & outs of the program or college football in general you might say some positive things about the man. If you want to complain, complain about our fans WHO DO NOT make any noise at the games, all you do is whine & tell each other that was a dumb move the coaches made. We are some of the most pitiful fans in college football, it is tougher to play at Miss. State than Between the Hedges. If ya’ll have any sense(I doubt you do) start supporting the players & coaches. See what the stadium would be like if you stopped complaining, made some freaking noise & supported Coach Richt & the team. World Vision is a great organization to give to the 3rd world parties in need. I’ve been giving to this organization for 20 years. After working with disaster relief in poor areas where the tornadoes hit I’ve found out that no one is there to help the disadvantaged and poor in this country. We’ve taught them to depend on the gov’t, instead of working for a hand up, they’ve learned to work the hand out.

These blog comments that are so negative show a complete lack of understanding, about the man and what is important in this world. I hope a lot of you never have to see the terrible horror of poverty that he is talking about. All you think is important is a football game. I want to win as much as anybody but I do not obsess about it, and I am darn proud to have a coach that has his life priorities set right so that he actually tries to help out those, less fortunate than himself. If all you are concerned about are wins and losses, you have already lost in life as it is. Ask some of these vets, what it is like to see some of the poverty over in the middle east. Maybe you will understand then why some of them look at America and are jealous. That jealousy breeds hatred, and gives rise to some of the stupid things they do and try and blame it on their religion. CMR’s religion tells him that he can make a difference both in a young mans life and in helping some folks maybe obtain a better life. Sad, that some of you would cut down a man that has that much compassion, as he does.
If you can not say anything good about a person, perhaps you should not say anything at all. I spent a lot of my whole adult life in the military and I can tell you first hand, that America is so lucky when compared to some of the countries I visited as far as quality of life. We have poverty here for sure, but nothing in comparison to what I saw in S.E. Asia, some places in central America and even the middle East.
I am proud that a man in his position like CMR, is our coach and I am proud he has such a good moral compass that he follows. I feel sorry for folks whose whole life revolves around a football game, and who live only through a blog about football, as a fair amount of you do.

This was a story about a man and his wife doing something of value to help children and families that are poor and under-priveledged. It had nothing to do with comparing him to other coaches, championships. It was all to do with a man of compassion for his fellow man and his faith in God and humanity. You can’t save a child’s life or feed a starving family with a championship ring. That’s what’s wrong with the world today! There is too much importance put on sports and what’s in it for me! The movie actors/actresses, sports all make a fortune but I don’t think many of them come close to having the passion and heart of Mark Richt and his Wife! No one with a brain questions the charitable nature of Richt or his family. But the bottomline is the man cannot Head Coach an SEC Football Team. The success he had early on was a great formula of him being the OC and Van Gorder or Muschamp running the D.
Essentially we had no HC in those days and it worked well. As soon as he relinquished his role as O play caller and hired Bobo and Martinez the ship began to sink.
This season will be as bad as last. I think he wins one of the first two games – maybe.
I think he loses to SC but he may get a face slap earlier by a very hungry Boise State Team. If he loses the first two games he will wish he had left at the end of last season.
Home up for sale for charity? The guy has more than enough to give without selling his home. I think the man sees the team (and coaching staff) he has and realizes he’d better start liquidating.

I love Coach Richt for doing this. Jesus said the more stuff you have the less effective you are in His kingdom. Jesus knew that less is often more. American Christians would rather rationalize their endless pursuit of ease than do what Jesus said. The gospel tales on new meaning when all your stuff is gone. It’s wildly liberating. When Coach Richt is done as coach hopefully he’ll move into full-time ministry instead of another coaching gig.

There are a lot of people who claim to be Christians and never act that way in their own lives. Some really are of the opinion that Christ died for my sins so I am going to live my life that way not caring how I treat others at all. Some really are takers not givers. I really hate those who treat Mark Richt like crap because being a nice person is a character flaw in a head coach and I am a SC fan. It is an embarrassment how some coaches in football use their religion to recruit players and win football games and that is kind of the extent of how they use their religion to help themselves. I question these coaches in exploiting religion I have not done that once with Richt because his life shows who he is.

2 “So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 3 But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 so that your giving may be in secret. Late spring is the perfect time for a feel good, because come late fall a few are going to be wondering why he makes 3 million in the first place. What a Richt type does to me is make me feel dirty for liking college football so much. It is the southern DNA in me, but I think you pay the man to win football games or at least not bring the hood to Athens. There is some responsibility to the people paying you. Coach might better spend some time worrying with his football team this summer rather than digging holes in Honduras. We’ve got plenty of problems in our own country right now with tens of thousands without homes due to the tornadoes, floods, etc., so if there’s going to be a trip, it might be time better spent in Alabama or Joplin, Missouri….
Of course Honduras will make for better press, I suppose….I shouldn’t say that and am proud of what he does, but I do get tired of the save the world speeches when we’ve got terrible problems right here at home….

As a GT alum and supporter, I despise Bulldogs sports with every fiber of my being. If they lost every football game from here out, I’d be thrilled. But dammit if I don’t have a deep respect for Mark Richt as a person. He’s the genuine article and I hope UGA fans realize what a gem of a man they’ve got guiding their football team (and we must acknowledge that results are very important, so let’s not forget that he’s had some enviable on-the-field success, as well). That is something to be proud of.

Ok, douchebag FL and GT fans who love to hang out on a GA blog: chances are, he is gone after this year. No argument here on that. But clearly the man has conviction, and this has nothing to do with football. We could all follow his example in this regard and the world would be a better place. (Although you would still be – no matter what – an insufferable douchebag, you asshead.)

Funneeeeee. Richt says he made this decision. That’s very admirable but in REAL Christianity you never decide – you only OBEY God’s decision and subsequent command (Matthew 7:21, 22).There is a vast difference between a “Christian” work and a God-directed work. It’s the vast gulf between Heaven and Hell.

Tough time to sell a house for any reason, but I suppose his prospective buyers aren’t being hit like the great majority of us are in this market/economy. Wish I could downsize…would cost me too much cash.
Coach Richt is a good man, and I am thankful my kid is at Georgia. Wouldn’t want him anywhere else. But that doesn’t mean all is well, far from it. I hope like h e double l that this team can make a strong run. I believe they will. It could be a wild ride, can’t wait.

Mark Richt is a good person. He’ll never forget what it was like to be a career backup behind Jim Kelly, so he makes weird personnel decisions based on the players feelings, rather than on winning games. The lackluster play is now bearing the fruit of lackluster recruiting. If your son were a blue chip prospect, would you want him to sign with a 6-7 team? Send your kid to college somewhere else to play ball and let him go to church with Saint Richt.

Will, if you truely know this to be fact, then why doesn’t Richt just move on to those more important things.
He is truely a wonderful person, but, again, if you know the Richts feel that way, it is almost a little unethical to continue coaching while feeling that it isn’t as important as other things.
Maybe that is part of the reason for the arrests, and him now saying he going to start studying football.

Mark Richt is a first class guy. We are just lucky enough to have him as our head coach. His (and his wife’s) greatness come from within them, not “between the hedges” or from coaching on any other football field. The Georgia Bulldogs are fortunate enough to have him and them, as our own…and I for one am darn proud to have him as our couch and his wife as our sideline caretaker, not to mention, his children as our sideline cheering section. Wally, being a Christian doesn’t mean one is perfect or won’t make mistakes. What it does mean is that he has a personal realationship with Christ. I’m not trying to preach here, but there is MUCH more to being a Christian than “being perfect” in the eyes of man. I personally think it’s a testement to his Christianity that he hadn’t snapped on some idiot fan sooner.
I love how people want to compare him to Saban and Miles when he owns both head to head. The MNC has a lot to do with luck, timing, and schedule. Everyone always remembers how dominant a National Champion is, but few remember that they ALL have a scare and win a game that they probably should lose. Be patient Dawg fans our day is coming, and it will be with Mark Richt. Call me a kool-aid drinker if you will, but we are much better off with Richt than without him.

Those who question motive and sincerity do not understand that all Christians live under grace and if doing what we are commanded to do puts them in an unfavorable light with some (particularly those who think life begins and ends between the hedges) that is something that grace teaches one to deal with daily I am sure Coach Richt’s motives are not based on what others think, but on the conviction that serving others can take many paths, including his job. I have heard that his long term plans include doing missionary work full time at some point. An SEC coach usually has a short shelf life and you can burnout quickly so I wonder how much he has left in the tank. I guess it will all depend on what happens this fall.

“Let him who stole steal no more. But rather, let him labor with his hands doing that which is good so that he may have to give to him who does not have.” Coach Richt has obviously embraced a sense of a higher calling with regards to the abundance which has been heaped upon him. Things like this will eventually find their way to the win column. And whose win column is that? Me thinks Richt believes that it is more important to hear the words “Well done my good and faithful servant. Welcome into the joy of the Lord.” This is the type of guy you want coaching your kids.

I don’t buy this explanation for 1 second.
Here’s the truth:
Richt’s had talent, 60+ guys went on to be drafted in the NFL. But Richt’s squandered his talent, more than any other SEC Coach, perhaps more than any other football coach in history. The Bible teaches in the story of the talents, that if you don’t use your talent, you will lose the talent you have been entrusted with. It appears this has come to pass for Mark Richt. After 2 seasons where he went 12-14, and wasted talent, going 2-9 against ranked teams, it appears the universe is taking away things from Richt now (players are transferring, coaches are leaving, his home is up for sale, his AD MCGARITY won’t renew his contract).
If you mismanage resources, you don’t get to manage them any longer.

DDawgie11, Job had all his children, and everything he owned taken from him, his wife said, he should cuss God and die, but that had nothing to do with him squandering his talents, in fact, he was given back seven fold children, and what he had lost, and lived to see his children’s, children. Just because someone goes through hard times, doesn’t mean God has taken away his or her talent. Unless you have spoken to God personally, I would say you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Again, Richt was entrusted with 61 talented NFL players and didn’t develop the talent enough to win a National Championship. Look at what TCU, Boise have done with much less talent. Richt does not take stewardship seriously. Richt’s a Bowden guy, hire good asst’s and sit back and put your feet up. That’s why McGarity isn’t extending Richt’s short contract. Poor manager= nothing to manage eventually.

“Good man”? Depends on how you define “good”.
Judging by Richt’s 12-14 record over last 2 seasons, if good is measured by fruit, you have to wonder.
Jesus defined “good” by “fruit”.

Not good fruit.

As Jesus taught, Richt won’t get a heavenly reward on the sale of his home. Why?
“When you give to poor people, don’t announce that you are giving. Don’t do like the hypocrites do. They blow trumpets before they give so that people will see them. They do that in the synagogues and on the streets. They want other people to give honor to them. I tell you the truth. Those hypocrites already have their full reward. So when you give to poor people, give very secretly. Don’t let any person know what you are doing. Your giving should be done in secret. Your Father can see the things that are done in secret. And he will reward you.”

Jeff Schultz made a great point in his Feb 2, 2011 article on the AJC blog:
–
“Here are some more numbers for you: 63, 73, 73, 114, 54, 63. Those were the rankings of TCU’s last six recruiting classes. The Horned Frogs went 36-3 in the last three seasons, including two BCS bowls.
Boise State’s last eight recruiting classes ranked 73, 72, 73, 78, 57, 64, 60, 97. The Broncos’ record in the last five years: 61-5 with two BCS bowls.
I know. TCU and Boise State don’t play in the SEC. But it doesn’t change the point: Those schools are doing more with less. Georgia has been doing less with more.”

You are showing everyone your football IQ when you compare the WAC to the SEC. These two teams are not challenged week in and week out like you are in the SEC. BSU and TCU play two tough, physical games a year TOPS!

I’m sorry, but I’m not impressed at all. I’m happy CMR read a book and discovered poverty exists in most of the world, but gee, there’s 44 million living in poverty right here in this country. Some of them use to have nice families and second homes as well.
Why are the same Americans impressed by a story such as this, the same ones that turn around and vote to hand over more tax money to rich folks? Then after decades of handing the tax earned by working people, these same voters become concerned that the nation has debt (depending on who is in office) and so insist upon withdrawing aid to feed American children and families. We’re one election away from putting our seniors back into poor houses while turning their hard earned benefits over to corporations.
I’d be more impressed if CMR had the Christian gumption to address that! But he will not because, in the end, he cares more about making those millions than people living in poverty right here in his own state and country.

The Elite coaches have lake houses such as Saban at Lake Burton because they genuinely need a place to get away from the pressure of the spotlight in SEC Football. They put so much into coaching and concentrating on preparing to win that they are just simply exhausted and need a place to recharge the batteries. They are paid millions to win games and championships. Markj Richts reason for selling his home while admirable as a human being is very telling about his focus. This isn’t an attack on him. Good for him and his intentions. What this is, is, a telling insight into the fact that his isn’t totally dedicated to bringing a championship to the University of Georgia. Good for the starving kids in Africa, bad for the long overdue fans in Athens.

Anybody that questions why he went public with this just doesn’t get it. Just look at all the negative comments on here about, he can’t coach, he has an anterior motive, or some other sad comment. He was probably trying to put any rumors to rest before they started. Obviously, with the majority of the folks who post on these blogs, it makes little difference. It doesn’t appear, at least from what I can read most of the time on these blogs, that most DAWG fans appreciate what they have in CMR, and combined with all the other people who support other schools on these blogs, it is a good thing he doesn’t pay attention to most of you. Some of you expect perfection all of the time, and some of you refuse to back up statements with any reasoning. You supposedly negative supporters of UGA don’t deserve a good football team, an honest coach, and you might as well go for the other teams. You don’t support UGA. I think some Florida fan said a couple of days ago , that UGA had the worst, supportive fans around and I believe he is right. Your negative comments add fuel to some of the nasty folks that come on these blogs, discourage recruits , who also read these blogs, and make you appear to be fair weather fans. It is a sad commentary, but that appears to be they way society is going these days. And you wonder why the rest of the country looks down on this region so much.
I realize this will just give some of you fodder to post negative crap about me, and I personally do not care. But you should at least have and show some decency towards a good man, who is trying his best and sets an example that you should try to strive to be, not cut down.

CMR is at a unique disadvantage in the coaching fraternity because he is honest and actually cares for the student athlete. Sadly, many alumni and it would seem the majority of the fans that support college football, don’t care how a coach wins, they just want him to win. Some of the college administrators feel the same way. I suppose if UGA doesn’t come out with 10 wins this year, the demand will be for CMR’s head. He will be dismissed and UGA can find a coach, maybe even one with questionable methods to get them their required stature and number of wins, that satisfies their need to have bragging rights amongst their peers. I think it will be a sad day for UGA football, but what the heck, I am just one person so no big deal either way. It will be hard to find a man of his caliber though again, as they do not make too many decent coaches, that actually hold themselves and the athletes to high standards in the NCAA. O
one only needs to look no further than the SEC, to see that.

We did small group in home study of the book “The Hole in Our Gospel,” written by Richard Stearns. and it is a compelling read. I think it is wonderful that Coach Richt and his family are actively living their faith. One of the points that the book makes is that there is so much that can be done for the least of us, don’t let the vast problems and challenges prevent you from doing something. I believe it is easy to be critical, but it is rewarding to do something for someone else. The Richt family will have changed at least one life for the better, and that is what we all should do.

True UGA fans know CMR is a good coach and of course he is a good man. He will get this program turned around and on the right path. Not a blogger in here, UGA fan or not, knows 1/10th of what that man knows about football. The more I read about Mark Richt the more I’m coming to understand that Richt is going through what is commonly called a ‘mid-life crises’. Comments make in an earlier article by Richt emphasized the fact his new home on Lake Hartwell gave him…’”a 50- or 60-minute ride to the office…you’ve got a chance to get football out of your mind on the way home and be able to relax a little bit.” Excuse me!!! You’re not paid 3 million a year to ‘get football out of your mind’. I could never/ever imagine Vince Dooley making such a statement, just as I could never imagine Vince Dooley living anywhere else but Athens, GA. No Mark, you have to decide, either you’re going to be a full time head coach of the great University of Georgia or do something else. Mark, the sooner you make such a decision with respect the role you will pursue, the sooner you decide exactly what your role will be with respect to coaching, ministry, etc., the sooner UGA will regain its rightful statue in college football, i.e, being one of the most feared/revered college football programs in the country. UGA deserves better, you deserve better.

I think Coach Richt is one of the finest men in college football today. He is a faithful servant of God. We are challenged to go into the world and preach the gospel. That does not mean you have to be a preacher. It is living life the way our Savior told us to do. We have our second home on the market as well. It cost money to keep a second home going regardless of who owns the house. And we to are doing this so that we may share with others what we have been so richly given to us by God. As for the la guy, he needs to blog about mr.reggie bush and his family who was on the take while at usc. I don’t blame the coach, i blame the player and his family. I also blame the school for trying to cover it up. I am a dawg fan and will die as one. Hopefully, coach richt will outlive me and still be there coaching when i leave this earth. We need more godly men and women in sports today. We have enough bad boys out there using the system to take them to the mooney game. that is if the nfl is still in existance.

It stings a little to see commentary defending christian values followed by derisive stabs at others’ lifestyles, flaws, opinions, etc. It seems to be in sharp contrast to the values that we should espouse. If we are to attract others to faithfully follow in this mission based on acceptance of such inevitable flaws in an effort to enrich lives and encourage the pursuit of a greater purpose, then I believe condescension is counter-productive. I feel the same way about the fire and brimstone evangelists on gamedays in Athens. It’s seems hard to believe that these efforts do not turn more people off than they win over. I want to see the Dawgs win as much as anyone, and whether or not Richt is the man to take us back to the glory days, I’m thankful at least for the fact that he has us talking about bigger things.

Oracle – I can’t speak for all, but I like to think that I would be accepting of his outspoken faith if these were the circumstances. Actually, that’s somewhat aligned with my point. The fact of the matter is that Coach Richt is taking this step to help people who are in need, and regardless of whether this is done in the name of Christianity, Islam, etc., it’s an act of love for the good of humanity. More than promoting religious dogma, he is demonstrating the actions that his religion has compelled him to take for the greater good. I applaud this from any religion. I am of Christian faith, but I believe that it is a parochial perspective to believe that only those who share your religious beliefs should be celebrated or revered when they do good for the world.

Good for you CMR. I believe in doing good things for people because it is good for the soul. It, however, is not a ticket to the golden roads of Heaven. Your key to heaven is in your heart not your actions. Perhaps you all, who are so consumed with football that you fail to see the big picture, should take a lesson from a teacher and a coach. Look in your heart and tell me there isn’t a glimmer of admiration. If you don’t see it than you, my dear, are in a great deal more trouble than the next season of Dawg football. CMR may not save the Dawgs but it may save a lost soul looking for someone to look up to. As for his past actions, I ask you what Jesus died on the cross for? Did he not die for our sins? Did our lord not give up his only son for the love of humanity to which we are not worthy? Who are you to decide if he is or isn’t a Christian? Turn that “high power of preception” on yourself and look at your own heart. You know. Maybe not everyone else but deep down inside you know who you are and he knows who he is.

[...] “Within the last year, I read this book, The Hole in Our Gospel, written by Richard Stearns. We felt like this was one way to be able to do that.” (You can read the full article here.) [...]
