Video: Staying healthy, avoiding off-field trouble are Bulldogs’ offseason priorities

I’ve been asked to do these video updates with Cinesport from time-to-time here. In this one Noah Coslov asks me about the offensive line post-A.J. Harmon and off-the-field issues. As you’ll note, there’s a reason I’m a writer and not a television reporter. But let me know what you think anyway. . . .

AJ had the potential to contribute this year, and will be missed. Hopefully others will step up and fill this void.

And just has hopefully, we’ll stay healthy and won’t lose any players to off-the-field issues this year! .. Go Dawgs!

Has a new UGA been picked yet? Do you think they’ll go “outside” the traditional line of UGA’s? They need one that will stay healthly and show some spunk on the sidelines. Last years team reflected last years UGA!!

The losses on the line are disappointing to say the least. Some of the freshman may be pressed into action. This is the most suspect part of the team IMO. Is it just me or have things gotten far more complicated on both sides of the ball? To hear some of the coaches and players talk, the plays are pretty involved. Guess I’m just old fashioned as I like it when teams wear down their opponent with strength, determination and good coaching. We shall see.

good answers, fine delivery, but I prefer your print articles. Easier to read about it while multitasking or on the smartphone.

Agree with your analysis Chip. We MUST stay healthy and out of trouble. You noted 8 returning OL’s on scholarship. Didn’t I read where 2 or 3 of the returning OL’s were injured and did not play in the Spring, but are expected to be back by Fall? That was A. Long and the Benedict kid. I also believe one of the incoming freshmen had off-season surgery as well and is expected to redshirt. Thus, that not only leaves us with a lack of depth, but with a lack of experience as well. I know certain true freshmen can handle it (e.g. Sturdivant), but like you said, you do not want to go to war with a line dominated by freshmen. But that may be what transpires. If that is the case, my suggestion to to the OC and staff is employ a quick-release, ball-control, short-passing attack similar to what Boise runs. The line would not have to hold blocks long or open gaping holes for the running game. Get rid of the ball quick with those speedy receivers and backs. Get them in space one-on-one. Just a thought. Good coaches always find ways to build around their talent (or lack thereof), not a prescribed system. Hopefully Richt and Bobo will figure something out before Sept 3.

It seems the family may be upset at UGA from the standpoint of Dallas Lee, is there any ill feelings with them and the brother who has committed to Ala… he sick, is he not up to par, or is his brother just plain better?

As the 1970s started, Bryant’s Alabama teams had weathered a few down years and people were wondering if Bryant was washed up. A few weeks before the start of the 1971 season, he installed the wishbone offense. This set the stage for unprecedented dominance as the Crimson Tide went on to compile a record of 103-16-1 in the 1970s.

My point being that Richt has earned the opportunity to right the ship and, in my opinion, is trying to do so. He has installed a good defensive scheme and is recruiting to fill needs. Once he does the same thing for the offense then the Dawgs should have the inside track to win the East. You’ve got a solid QB and you may even be better off by not relying on a superstar receiver and instead play as a team. While I’m proud of Mark Ingram, the reason Bama has more national championships than Heisman winners is that they play as a team. I know that bloggers will vent but, in the end, supporters should support.

Hope to see you in the Dome come December!

Hopefully our 3 seniors will lead from the front. If the guards can just create some space to allow the backs to get to the second level and work their talents. If Murray has to pull it down and use his legs that may not be such a bad thing. We have great TEs so or O-line shouldn’t suffer to bad. Bobo is known to keep the ends in to protect.

I have a question, Chip…How much contact are the incoming players allowed to have with coaches before fall practice starts? I know that they have a workout program, but are they allowed to work with position coaches, or is this a violation?

Hope their will not be any more injuries on o line but I think we will be fine. And I have been shocked their has not been any arrest so far this year. Caleb king is my pick to be the surprise on offense and step up in a major way, and Richard samuels on the defensive side of the ball.

UGA is in Big Big trouble. The lack of depth on the O line is Mark Richts fault. To think UGA pay millions to this clown who has had a charmed program mostly with Donnan players. Dont give me the # 2 in 2007 argument with a bowl win over a weak Hawaii. UGA lost to a pathetic SC team at home that year without scoring a TD and got thrashed by Tenn. Its time for this clown to move on and UGA needs to hire a SABAN or a MEYER.

Frannie you are a worthless bag of poop. I guess you think you would be a better coach. Backseat coach. Get on a message board and spout off . F Meyer and Saban. There’s more to life than winning. Richt is changing these kids lives for the better and I hope he stays forever.

I dont mind having Freshman start in year 1, it might be a good thing as most of what’s left seems to be at the top of the ceiling. It might be just what the doctor ordered.
you recruit good talent to play not sit and watch for 2 years. it’s not like their 2 star players.
Get after it from the get go! GATA

I try not to get down on the Dawgs. They’ve got to play the games with who they have and I’m going to pull for them no matter what, so what good does griping do? It’s not like I’m going to switch over to being an Auburn, UF, or Tech fan just because UGA doesn’t have 22 All-Americans starters. The Dawgs will be fine, and so will I.
