Dogs to open 2013-14 football seasons against Clemson

Athens — Georgia will open the 2013 and 2014 football seasons against Clemson.

The Bulldogs will play Clemson at Memorial Stadium on Aug. 31, 2013, then face the Tigers at Sanford Stadium on Aug. 30 the following year. It will be the first games in this storied rivalry since 2003.

Georgia and Clemson agreed to play in 2013-14 several years ago but just recently settled on the opening dates for those seasons, according to UGA spokesman Claude Felton.

Georgia has played Clemson 62 times — more than any other non-conference opponent other than Georgia Tech — and leads the series 41-17-4. The Bulldogs have won the last five games between the two.

UGA’s other non-confererence home games in 2013 are against North Texas and Appalachian State. They get Charleston Southern and South Alabama in ‘14.

In other scheduling news Thursday the Georgia basketball team announced it will play host to Cincinnati on Dec. 2 as part of the Big East-SEC Challenge.

“Cincinnati will certainly prove to be a formidable opponent for our young team,” Georgia coach Mark Fox said in a statement. “We are happy to be playing this
game in Athens. The move to campus venues, in fact, should give the event a
new feature that will be great for fans of both leagues.”

I have to stop coming to these comment sites, most of the posts on here are from complete morons, I am a big dawg fan but I can not predict what we might do, just like tiger fans are already claiming a win. How about waiting till the game is played and then boast about the victory.

Why has the UGA football program been so slow to realize that your out of conference schedule is where the national (talking heads and pollsters) respect comes from??? I agree that the SEC is an extremely tough conference if not one of the best…BUT it doesnt matter as much as it used to with the rise of all smaller conferences and teams…. Tennessee played a home and home with Oregon.. Vanderbilt opened at Michigan… GEORGIA hasn’t played Miami since 1967……when did GEORGIA last play.. Southern California..Texas..Notre Dame…Michigan…Oklahoma….Ohio State.. and DONT say you might see one of these teams in a bowl game SOMEDAY so you cant schedule them.. thats CRAP!!

This turned into a great series in the late 70s and early 80s. Be great to see them play again. Teams have been similar in performance though the Dawgs have probably been the better team over the past 10 years.

Chip: In your reference to UGA home non-conference games for 2013 and 2014, you did not name GT for either year. Was this an oversight or do UGA and GT not play at Athens in one of these two years?

LSU opens with Oregon in Dallas; Alabama plays at Penn State…and UGA plays Boise State in the “neutral site” of the Georgia Dome and then agrees to take (another) two hour bus ride to Clemson. Pretty impressive!

Two easy wins against the pathetic acc. What, we couldn’t schedule Army.

[...] No opening-game cupcakes for Georgia. The Bulldogs will open their 2013 and 2014 seasons against Clemson. That’s not following the time-tested bakery formula for SEC non-conference success. Remember, the Bulldogs play Georgia Tech every year in the finale. New AD Greg McGarity said he wanted to take another look at football scheduling, but apparently decided he likes full stadiums. SC govt officials need to plan early though for the 2014 game in Athens.

when clempson has a road game, agricultural economy takes a big hit. No plowing for a whole week.

Maybe they can broadcast the games on the history channel. Have a narrartor talk about the few times in the 1980s when maybe the games were slightly relevant. Without a history lesson no one under the age of 50 will care! At half they could show clips from the “good ole days” when the Dawgs actually had decent teams.

One thing about it Clemson sucks so they should be a couple good games.

CMR you da man!

I admire UGA for re-igniting the rivalry with Clemson. I wish UF would open with Miami or someone like Ohio St. etc. instead of some patsy.

Great news! I recall fondly going to Clemson-UGA games as a kid. Always seemed like the games were close & exciting. Death Valley is a fun stadium and you can take a boat instead of an RV to tailgate. The proximity of schools and fans make this a great rivalry to renew. Hope Dawgs sweep the orange (CU, UT, UF and Auburn).

don’t worry king, the trailer park Bammers will have run you out of Bama by then after you underachieve a couple of more times as the preseason #1 team and lose 3 games, including blowing a 24 point lead at home to your hated in state rival.

I rarely post, but had to after reading a Clemson fan refer to our 30-0 win as a fluke. Dear Lord. Getting beat by 30 points in your own backyard is a lotta things, but a fluke ain’t one of ‘em. And, King Saban, if Georgia claimed all of the silly “National Championships” handed out by magazines and newspapers back in the days of leather helmets, we’d be in something greater than the “1 Club”… National Championships in college football are all mythical. Until the NCAA sanctions one, there will only be those willing to fly a banner claiming the mythical NC.
