Offensive lineman A.J. Harmon leaving UGA for “personal reasons”

Rising junior A.J. Harmon is leaving the Georgia football team for “personal reasons,” according to UGA’s sports communication office.

Harmon, who projected as a potential starter at right tackle for the Bulldogs, intends to “transfer to another institution,” according to a very brief new release distributed Tuesday. No other information was immediately available. However, Harmon’s departure coincides with the completion of UGA’s spring semester. Harmon had to sit out the Liberty Bowl last December due to an academic-related suspension.

Neither Harmon nor head coach Mark Richt could be reached for comment.

J.B. Arnold, Harmon’s coach at Jefferson County High School, also has not talked to Harmon but desperately wants to.

“He called me one day last week and said he was leaving Georgia and that’s all I know,” Arnold said Tuesday. “I told him that we needed to sit down and talk before he did anything, but I haven’t heard from him since.”

Harmon signed with Georgia as a defensive lineman in 2008.  He was moved to offensive line that fall and redshirted. He played in three games as a redshirt freshman in 2009 and four as a backup offensive lineman last year.

This spring he was battling with Justin Anderson for the starting job at right tackle. Either way he was expected to see significant playing time both there and as a backup at left tackle.

Harmon is the second major offensive contributor to leave the team prematurely this spring. Running back Washaun Ealey was granted a release to seek a transfer earlier this month.

I’m thinking that next year’s signing class will be OL heavy.

It’s gotta be the grades!!! But if you count Trinton Sturtivamt, he’s the third majot contributor to be gone from the offense. At least it’s not for “disciplinary reasons”.

Guess he realized that going 6-7 won’t help his chances of winning.

Time for Richt to start trying to sign some beef next season. Looks like we will be thin on the line. Gonna have to use a lot of 2 tightend sets!!!

Is it too late in the year to go after a couple of JUCO guys just to give us some depth?

All student-athletes have unlimited academic resources at their disposal including extra study sessions, tutors, etc. In this regard, they have it better than the average student. But some athelets are just dumber than a load of bricks or just don’t work hard enough at their studies. I guess flippin’ burgers ain’t all that bad a deal for some folks.

CMR put the Dawgs behind the 8 ball by not recruiting enough lineman. As stated earlier he may need to go after some JUCO guys if it’s not too late.

With the recent attrition at OL and already lack of depth, will there be a public tryout this summer? At least all preferred walk-ons at O-line know they made the right choice in selecting UGA in attempt to get some playing time.

That’s too bad, but only from a “potential” standpoint.I thought he had a lot of that when we first signed him. As of now, he has yet to be a contributor in any meaningfull way. I’m doubt this is much of a surprise to the staff. We will all wish him the best.

Damn! I hope one day before I die we can again start recruiting some big and mean offensive linemen who are tough enough to hang in there, physically strong enough to stay healthy, and smart enough to pass their classes. This crap every year is getting old!

The Dawgs o-line will be just fine even with the transfer of AJ Harmon and loss of Trinton Sturtivamt the dawgs still have pretty good depth on there line including the OL from this signing class. Though not many of them have actual game experience it’ll help when summer camp starts to get them up to speed!

Richt has always had a difficult time evaluating OL talent…Seth Watts, Kevin Perez, Zeb McKinsey, Chris Little, AJ Harmon just to mention a few. And all were 4 or 5 star studs. I’m thinking that we just don’t have the coaching in place to coach them up…just my opinion.

Cut the guy some slack, we don’t know all the details.. He is still a Dawg and I am proud of the effort he put in. If it is academics, the least we can do is support him and hope he gets his things in order, if it is not academics then all your negative comments will really hurt. Best of Luck AJ!!

He couldn’t cut it in the classroom, so he needs to leave. When’s the last time you heard of Bama players not making it in the classroom…never…know why?… they pamper them all they way through school. Professors at Bama are warned to not flunk any football players out…..how pitiful is that? Bama is easy to get into and even easier to stay in if your an athlete. AJ Harmon has always been an underachiever in the class room and on the field and needs to be gone…maybe he can play for Bama…a lot of dumbasses already do.

Looks like the Dawgs are joining the Gators with some real depth and experience issues on the o-line. This just makes me believe that South Carolina is the odds on favorite in the East even more than before. We better hope that neither of us has any key injuries up front or we’ll definetely have to rely on our defenses to carry us this season.
What’s up with all the transfers this year? We’ve had several down in Gainesville, as well. Maybe we (UF and UGA) need to start seriously considering joining the ranks of the “oversigners club”…..LOL!
