Rising junior A.J. Harmon is leaving the Georgia football team for “personal reasons,” according to UGA’s sports communication office.

Harmon
Harmon, who projected as a potential starter at right tackle for the Bulldogs, intends to “transfer to another institution,” according to a very brief new release distributed Tuesday. No other information was immediately available. However, Harmon’s departure coincides with the completion of UGA’s spring semester. Harmon had to sit out the Liberty Bowl last December due to an academic-related suspension.
Neither Harmon nor head coach Mark Richt could be reached for comment.
J.B. Arnold, Harmon’s coach at Jefferson County High School, also has not talked to Harmon but desperately wants to.
“He called me one day last week and said he was leaving Georgia and that’s all I know,” Arnold said Tuesday. “I told him that we needed to sit down and talk before he did anything, but I haven’t heard from him since.”
Harmon signed with Georgia as a defensive lineman in 2008. He was moved to offensive line that fall and redshirted. He played in three games as a redshirt freshman in 2009 and four as a backup offensive lineman last year.
This spring he was battling with Justin Anderson for the starting job at right tackle. Either way he was expected to see significant playing time both there and as a backup at left tackle.
Harmon is the second major offensive contributor to leave the team prematurely this spring. Running back Washaun Ealey was granted a release to seek a transfer earlier this month.

All student-athletes have unlimited academic resources at their disposal including extra study sessions, tutors, etc. In this regard, they have it better than the average student. It gets real old hearing Georgia fans talk about academic issues. Look, you are not fooling anyone UGA fans. Your school is just like most of the other SEC schools. The only reason you have higher entrance requirements is because of HOPE. Every idiot in the state could get in with a 3.0 so they had to raise the standards that is all. Most UGA fans who talk academics didn’t even attend the school. And even if they did, who cares, it is an SEC school. They are all about the same. Your degree from UGA, FL, AUB, ALABAMA, OLE MISS, whatever, they are all pretty equal. So, lets take the academic snobbery out of the equation. What you really should be asking yourself is does Richt really have the team mentally. I would say the past two years would indicate no. No locker room chemistry on this team people. UGA will go 8-4 next year and that is only because the schedule is nice with no games against LSU BAMA or ARK.

Saban, losing a 24 pt. lead at home is not the same as losing a 14 pt. lead at their place, is it? Also, in 2008 we were preseason #1 and went 10-3. If the young man doesn’t want to do what it takes to stay academically eligible, then this is no major loss. I don’t hate AJ and wish him nothing but the best in life, but the facts are the facts. He was academically ineligible for the bowl game and he knew that Sturdivant was going to be out, so all he had to do was work hard in the classroom, weight room, and practice field and he could have been a starting tackle in the SEC. I am sure his high school coach would have told him that if he would have called him back before making his decision.

It’s because UGA never looks tough. And no one fears UGA. Your coach is a pushover and doesn’t have the edge to win it all. UGA never looks dominating. And you have a serious and very troublesome head case with Florida. I mean you want respect but you have lost 18 of the last 21 to the Gators. Sorry, but no one is going to admire a program like that. You also have been a whipping boy to all the power SEC teams. Maybe you should look and see you have a losing head to head record against ALABAMA, AUB, LSU, and TENN, and if things keep going this way, FL will catch you too and erase the dominance you once had. Congratulations, UGA is in 6th place.

Matt Sorrells, Josh Kerr, Bronson Sweat, etc. etc. Our recruiting OL has been terrible for 20 yrs. We need Garner to evaluate OL talent. I think Searles and Calloway set this program back years. They failed to recruit athletic linemen and wanted someone to ” pick up the system”. Just knock the hell out of the guy in front of you. Bean will be solid this year. Next year will be tough unless we get some JUCO guys. Go back and look at all of OL misses over the past 10 yrs.

Just remember that Trinton Sturdivant was a Freshman All-American First Team as a true frosh. No one expected him to be able to walk-in and play left tackle with dominance the way he did. Also, remember Kenarious Gates whom last year shinned for UGA at left guard as a true frosh. I expect Watts Dantzler or Zach DeBall to step-up in June and take over the right tackle position. This will allow Justin Anderson and Chris Burnette to rotate at right guard until we fit a good run zone block package and pass protection package for the entire OL. You have also got Kolton Houston, Brent Benedict, Austin Long and Dallas Lee in the mix as backups. Tthe left side seems solid and should be fun to watch them grind the pavement (i.e. Glenn, Gates and Jones). The right side will be a revolving door until someone steps up and takes the starting position this summer.
I agree that the 2012 class will need some big’uns in it to replenish the OL. I have a feeling you will see John Theus, Joe Harris, Vandal Alexander and Patrick Destefano all commit to the Dawgs in 2012 as LT, LG, RT and RG, respectively.

“Harmon, who projected as a potential starter at right tackle for the Bulldogs, intends to “transfer to another institution,” according to a very brief new release distributed Tuesday.”
A Bulldog player getting transferred to another institution could be on his way to jail. Let’s hope not. I may have to tutor some of these ballplayers that can’t make their grades and remain eligible to play ball. I am a pretty smart little dog. Richt has never “weeded” anyone out unless they are 4th string. Montez was in jail for sexual assault, and really couldn’t attend class. Adams and Evans “weeded” out Mettenburger after Richt named him starting QB. Ealey left because he was no longer “special” with all of the attention and drama given Crowell, and Harmon flunked out. because he finally had to go to class. Richt even brought cookies to Randy Moss at FSU, but 90 days in jail was too much even for Big Daddy Bowden.

If Harmon was being considered for a potential starter and rotating backup, he has some skills. I don’t know how scholarships at BFCS schools work for transfers due to academic issues. You guys act like we’re losing Cordy Glenn or Ben Jones. Answer me this question…how many games has Harmon started since playing for Georgia? Our offensive line will be just fine. Some of those freshmen O-linemen (Dantzler, Ward, etc) will have to train and learn quickly and maybe be thrown in the fire as true freshmen. Didn’t seem to hurt Ben Jones when he started as a freshman going up against Terrence Cody in only his 2nd start as a college football player. Play em Richt. Another thing that might be making these kids leave is competition even in the weight room. I believe those kids are being worked, and I mean worked hard. And they want to leave if it gets too tough. The work out plans have never been that tough and they wanna quit. The last ones standing, will be the ones that lead us to a title.
Too much hype not enough inside
May 17th, 2011
7:39 pm
And the there were none. They’re dropping like flies again in Athens. Until these kids get vetted beyond their high school athletic stats this will continue. I remember from my high school days some really good players that never got the call from the big schools to play college ball because the right people would know who was smoking dope and drinking and also those that were shaky in school. What we got to see was good football played by guys who deserved to be there to represent the school more than just “play ball”. So we didn’t get much of the drama that todays “hyped” up guys get. Then two years later they’re just gone, grades, illegal activity, theft, DUI, arrests, drugs and the list goes on. But ya know what, it’s all on the coaches and the system they work in that puts talent above all else. If they squeeze two years out of a player then they get theirs and who cares about punk a$$ kid who can’t make the grade anymore. Yes, college football has changed but I’d just as soon see the old school play than the “anything goes league” we’re currently watching.

This is why we’ve had some troubles over the past few years. The UGA Principal has to stop making all the athleates do as good in school as the other students. Everyone knows that UGA is the best non-Ivee League (Yale, Harvard, Georgetown for all those who don’t know) school in the country, meaning it is very hard to get into and stay in. If the Principal would make the standards a little lower (like the standards at Alabama, Florida and other SEC schools) we would win much more football games.

Boise lost a lot of talent last year, but they do have quite a bit of experience at the DT spot returning. Lost their #1 sack guy on the DL, though. Boise’s top 3 DT’s each have 6.5 or more TFL. They go 296, 295 and 307. South Carolina returns 3 of 4 starters on the DL.; one is a DT, 298 lb. But, that’s jumping ahead.
I accidentally posted that on the recruiting blog a couple of minutes ago.; don’t mean to cross-post.

I never ceases to amaze me how bitter and jealous UGA fans are towards AU. UGA could always hang the 1980 title out there as an argument for there superiority over AU and other schools without a “recent” title”
What UGA fans fail to tell you is that 1980 title was an absolute joke. I mean their schedule was PATHETIC. They played 12 D1A opponents who had a combined win percentage of 41%. They played FIVE TEAMS with 3 or less wins!!! Whata joke. The 1983 AU team was better then the 1980 UGA team but they played a BRUTAL schedule that included FSU, Texas and Boomer Esiason Maryland out of conference.
Keep dreaming that you better then AU UGA.
BTW – AUs opponents last year in D1A had a 63% win percentage.

These debacles under Richt’s watch from the arrests, to the academics, can this guy control this program at all, not to mention his loyalty to some of the worst assistant coaches in the SEC over the last 5 years. This offense will go nowhere without a solid line up front & God forbid another injury, I don’t care who you put in our backfield & no QB can throw without time. I predict a knockout dragout fight after about the 6th game between Grantham vs. Richt/Bobo due to the inability of the offense to produce, while the defense will be stellar. Good Luck Dawgs….your gonna need all you can get
