Gainesville – Georgia coach Mark Richt didn’t shed any more light on the sudden departure of A.J. Harmon on Tuesday, but he acknowledged that his loss was yet another blow to a precariously thin offensive line.
Richt was here at the Gainesville Civic Center to speak at a “UGA Day” alumni gathering. Beforehand he spoke with reporters about Harmon, a junior offensive tackle from Jefferson County who left the program Tuesday for “personal reasons.”
Asked if he could expound on the reason for Harmon’s departure, Richt quipped, “No, that’s why you say it’s personal reasons. That’s all I can tell you about that. I wish him the best. Good kid.”
Harmon (6-5, 320), a rising junior, projected as a possible starter at right tackle and was going to be at least a primary backup at both right and left tackle. Coupled with the loss of starting left tackle Trinton Sturdivant to a season-ending knee injury and other injury issues, the Bulldogs’ situation on the offensive line is potentially troublesome.
“Well it’s less,” Richt said of the depth on the line. “It’s just going to be an opportunity for someone else. We have confidence that Justin [Anderson] and Cordy [Glenn] play tackle. We believe that [guard] Kenarious Gates can play tackle if need be. . . . We’re getting confidence in Kolton Houston’s ability to play football for us. I would think if something happened to one of the tackles and Gates had to go outside, Kolton would be the next guy inside.”
The problems begin after that.
Georgia thought it had recruited its future tackles the previous two years in Austin Long and Brent Benedict. But both former five-star prospects have incurred serious injury problems that have delayed their ability to contribute.
Long (6-5, 302), a redshirt sophomore, had to have back surgery shortly after arriving in Athens from Memphis. He has basically recovered from that injury before suffering a partially torn pectoral muscle early in spring practice.
“I think the jury is still out on Austin right now just because of the injuries and lack of productivity to this point,” Richt said. “I’m not sure whether he’d ready to go at this point. By the time camp is over, he may get to the point that we’re comfortable enough in him.”
Benedict (6-5, 301), a redshirt freshman, had to have a complete knee reconstruction his senior season at The Bolles School in Jacksonville. He, too, should have been sufficiently recovered by now.
“We had him pegged as at least a right tackle when we signed him,” Richt said. “He was really a tremendous high school football player. Then he has an injury where he gets not only an ACL but nerve damage. He’s having trouble triggering his foot and he’s still trying to recover from that.”
Dallas Lee, a sophomore guard from Buford, is experiencing asthma-like symptoms that may or may not be due to mold issues.
Richt said there’s a chance they may have to turn to true freshmen for depth. Georgia signed three tackles – Watts Dantzler, Zach DeBell and Xzavier Ward – and five offensive linemen overall.
“I think we’ve got enough guys who can line up and play football at a very high level,” Richt said. “But you’d like to have more depth by now. You’d like to have more guys waiting in the wings for their opportunity. I’d rather not go through another cycle of freshmen . . . It’s really not ideal. But if that’s what it takes that’s what we’ll do.”
As for Harmon, there are strong indications his departure was academic related. Harmon had to sit out the Liberty Bowl with an academically-related suspension. His next destination is unknown.
“He called me one day last week and said he was leaving Georgia and that’s all I know,” said J.B Arnold, Harmon’s coach at Jefferson County High. “I told him that we needed to sit down and talk before he did anything, but I haven’t heard from him since.”
Harmon signed with Georgia as a defensive lineman in 2008. He was moved to offensive line that fall and redshirted. He played in three games as a redshirt freshman in 2009 and four as a backup offensive lineman last year.

Not good news for an OL that needed some of that. Coach Friend really has his work cut out for him this season. Let’s hope some of the kids coming in are able to contribute right away. Otherwise, it could be a long year up front.

Seems as if CMR can’t keep the big guys healthy. Not really his fault that these guys are getting hurt in high school. Hopefully this year we get Theus and Vadal Alexander in NSD. Those guys could come in next year as freshman and contribute.

Poor planning for the future!!! What would have happened if K Gates had gone on to KY? Would Da’Rick Rogers had played OL? LOL!!!! What happened to UGA recruiting the OL that N Gwinnett produced a couple years ago: James and Sheppard; one @ TN; one @ AL; UGA, also should have recruited a couple of JUCO lineman from last year’s class!!! Remember Vince Vance!!! Gues CMR will be responsible for the lack of these forsight!!!

Let me paraphase the delusional UGA fans….
“Good, it opens the door for the real All-Americans who have been sitting on the bench for three years and anyway he did not want to compete against the Dream teamers, so he left.”
As a post script, UGA has decided that the Dream teamers are so awesome that they are going to forego competing against overmatched college teams and have declared themselves as the newest NFL team with a special bye to play in the Superbowl against whomever is unfortunate enough to survived the NFL season.

Has there been a single year in the last 5 or 6 where our Coach does not start with some excuse as to why we underperform? Every team has casualties (academic, crime, injuries) but we seem to be the only team that comes up with excuses before the season even starts!!! My goodness the team at Tenth Street lost two starting offensive linemen because they could not get into that schools grad program but their coach simply stated “That’s just how this game is….someone will have to step up.” Our coach and our journalists always make it sound like the sky is falling. There is a military saying that morale is the single most important component to combat. So why write a negative article? Make something positive out of the negative and boost the team or at least give them no worries. Now they can already underperform and have a built in excuse! My goodness!!

Goof, I read his word twice. Where are you completely making up that any of them equate to him making any excuses? specifically? my goodness.
In fact did he not just put a positive motivational spin on the deal by saying :
“It’s just going to be an opportunity for someone else. ”
“We have confidence that …..”
“We believe that…….”
“We’re getting confidence in…..”
He then went on to give some encouraging words about guys who have legit injuries , would be able to contribute in the fall.
Where in fact did he say anything negative or set up any less expectations for the season? Seems more like you are the one guilty of that.

I as a real Alabama fan fully understands what it is like to suffer through injuries and various other self inflicted issues. I am not a “sidewalk” fan as I did actually attend the school on athletic scholarship and while I was there I made a great deal of friends, some graduated and some did not even make it out of their sophomore years. If some clown decides to come on here saying he is an Alabama fan and starts to smack talk, then he is just some guy who clings to being part of the program.
The fans of UGA have had a nice run with CMR and I have no doubt he hired a great O line coach( by the way a heck of fella, I personally knew while at Alabama) and they will put a line together that will make holes for Crowell, King, and other backs and do a good job of allowing your young quarterback to make his throws.
I know UGA fans have had their share of bad new lately, but it is all cyclical. It will turn around. Good luck to all my SEC brothers. I hope your kids do well in the off season programs and hopefully no one will cause any of our great institutions any embarrassments over the summer.

Just tired of folks who have never left anything on the field or saw their teammates go through 4 or 5 years of sometimes hell come on a blog and talk smack while never spending a penny to support their program yet are experts in everything including teams they do not even root for. I guess the society we live in has become that demented that some feel the need to beat or chastise others. Yes it leaves the Dawgs thin at the O-line. I believe we had this problem when David Green and Shockley were QB’s. We still finished in the top 5 and 10 finishes with a SEC Champ belt. We are fine. All this stuff was forseeable. From graduation losses to losses from attrition. From knee injuries, pre-existing back injuries and academic issues pending since last year’s Liberty Bowl. From inadequate evaluation of talent to finally landing the 9th rated offensive line class in the SEC. For Richt to finally express concern about depth issues tonight rather than a year ago is downright scary, and borders on negligence. Your football program deserves better.

I believe with Aaron Murray on his sophomore year and having a full season in the sec at 19 years old and putting up Heisman numbers is going to be a force to reckon with for 2011. He will not need as much time to get the ball off, therefore less time for pass protection. If our running backs can stay healthy and get to the outside we will be just fine. As i played football we all know i just takes one or two good blocks from the o line for a running backs to break off a tremendous run. With our defense in the second season in the 3-4 and the way Grantham coaches these boys to be men. Our defense will be in the top 5 in all categories come the end of the season. Therefore giving Aaron Murray and the offense some breathing room when playing in the best conference in college football SEC!!! With Boise st ans South Carolina the first two games of the season, that will be the biggest proving ground to see where we stand as competitors. Coach Mark Richt i cant see you being anywhere else than UGA. With these fair weather fans giving him the boot and the hot seat, i say give the man a break he has done a tremendous job at UGA with our first losing season at Georgia since 1996. All i can say is God speed CMR, you have got my support and prayers for a healthy season and a sec championship with hopefully a NC!!!! GO DAWGS

@ Thomas brown well i am glad you can quote stats but do remember he was a freshman. He set several records in the sec that no other freshman has done. If look a little farther in your stat book we were up by one or down by one touch down in the 4th quarter and were up by 3 touchdowns at half time over the defending national champs. its not Murray fault we lost those games, new defense, green being out, king being hurt, washaun being suspended, missed tackles on d, out of shape fourth quarter football. The only one i see that we need to get rid of is offensive coordinator mike bobo, he is the hindrance to positive production of our athletes, field goals on 4th and 1 on the one yard line is unacceptable!!!

It appears some folks need something to rally around in here with their constant criticism of CMR, UGA and even the players. Why don’t you folks think about all the bad weather events that have affected a lot of the SEC schools states. You energy could be better used to supply some bucks or maybe even a helping hand to some of the poor folks whose lives have been ravished. Instead of all this hooting back and forth between fans of different schools on here, do something meaningful. I have given to the American Red Cross, and I am sure they could use a lot more. If you can’t afford to help in some way or another physically, pray for these folks. Their sorrow and loss is devastating.

Compounded by the departure of A.J. Green, Bobo will of course overthink this offensive line problem and rely too heavily on the run and the short passing game. That been said, our talented offensive pieces will force their way through the uber-conservative play calling and shine.

Hutson Mason to make major announcement very soon.
I fear the news will not be good for Georgia fans.
Apparently, Mason isn’t excited about his 12 plays in 2010, and didn’t like getting pulled at the end of the G-Day game.
Mason feels he’ll never get a staret at Georgia, even though he outthrew Murray over Spring, Murray still is used more in interviews and such than Mason. Mason was told it was a competition to the best man.

Or how about this, try posting something that has been copied 20 times a week for lack of a real opinion about something. Or do you just need somebopdy else telling you what you think.
And yes, in a State of 10 million citizens it’s a pretty safe assumption that most fans of the State University did not actually attend, and given the % of college graduate in the general popluation most probably aren’t.. And? So? Logical Probabilities not one of those esteemed courses at tek? I attended UGA, and I am appearantly a heck of a lot smarter than you, based on what we read in here, so what’s your point?

1.) Just go with the true freshmen like Dantzler for depth
2.) Move another player already enrolled to OL

The O.L. should be fine. Richt and BOOBOO don’t ask the line to run block anyway, so as long as they can stand in front of pass rush, UGA will be fine. But, if you think this O.L. looks bad, wait until next year’s line steps on the field. Richt and his clone BOOBOO will be gone, but he will leave the next coach with a major rebuilding job to do. McGarity should have pulled the trigger on Richt last year, this clown has put UGA in such a deep hole that it will take 3 or 4 years to get the program back to respectability. Thanks McGarity&Richt for this mess you have created. And Dawgster, dawginlex, and all you other koolaid drinkers, i have been a UGA fan probably longer than either one of you, but unlike you, i will not continue to send money to UGA until this clown is gone. I’m sick and tired of watching an unprepared team both mentally&physically represent the University of Ga. every saturday. I’m like a major stock holder in a big company, and i’m not buying what this CEO is selling anymore. The value of this stock has been on a downward spiral for 3 consecutive years, and i will be broke if i continue to put money in this terrible product. Maybe you guys can understand this analogy, but i sincerely doubt it. Bottomline to all UGA stockholders, sell this underperforming stock before you go broke.

If you’re so into stock analogies, maybe you will get this one. From 1982 to 2000, the stock was worth about $2, then Richt enters and the price shoots to $10. Florida and UT (who’s stocks have been around $25 for the last few years, drop into the $5’s. This allows UGA to look good for a few years. Well, UF’s stock shot to $50 while UGA’s stayed around $10. Out come the whiners. Now, you’ve got quite a few SEC teams trading above your current price of $8, but it’s still better than the $2 Richt inherited.

Storm clouds continue to gather over Auburn.
Many influential Auburn folks have now INSISTED that Lowder
be “pushed away” from the Auburn program.
This can only mean one thing:
BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAD News is coming for Auburn.
I remain firmly convinced that when the NCAA is finished with Ohio State,
they will turn their full attention on Auburn…AND…the SEC.
When the NCAA proves that Cam Newton was paid,
the penalty that Auburn (and the SEC) will pay will be HUGE.
That will also open the door for the NCAA to put the entire SEC under review.
The SEC is going to find itself in a world of trouble. Very soon.

“issues” for 7-8 yrs for sure, but in times past they were able to deal with the issue and still be effective. Even Greene’s Jr year when they gave up SO many sacks, they still weren’t a bad offense. Helps to have a 3 yr starter at QB, who can adjust to that too. It’s just the past few years that the “issues” have translated into negative results, so I believe you have to look at other variables. What else has been a common factor on top of the o-line issues, (if we have had them forever now). Defensive uncertainty has been one, they weren’t dealing with that back when the o-line had problems before but the team still compensated. The O-line coach seems to me to be another variable. Fair or not (and other factors might very well overshadow this) but previous O-line coaches here (and other programs) seemed to deal with issues better than our last one did.

There must be a couple of JUCO offensive lineman that have recently made their grades, who UGA could take a look at for this year. With Auburn losing their entire defensive line, this was the year to probably go the JUCO route with the idea of building some depth in order to take advantage of Auburn’s personnel losses. It’s got to be frustrating for Uga fans. You starters are good. All you needed was some quality depth. Richt is right to be concerned

@Tide roll- You could be a Tech troll or a true Bama fan.I have no idea. However,I have read your comments for the last several months and agree with your view of our offensive line. It is a Big problem and has always been a problem for the last eight years. We have not signed true talent in our lineman.Could be Richt fault or staff, but it is factor in the SEC to win.Look at the last two years.Long signed out of high school with a bad back,Benedict signed with a ACL injury. This year Ward signed with a knee injury and will redshirt.Richt and staff has always put their energy into QB,receivers, running backs and special athletes. We need the talent in our line and have never put this as a priority in recruiting. It has been Richt achilles heel in the program and looks like it will continue. If you want to win in the SEC you have got to have experience in the O/L year in and year out.I believe this sets the tone again for a long season.Hope not,but I have seen this before several times over the past years.

Do you always get your news from Tigerdroppings? Auburn folk have wanted Lowder gone for years and years. However, I do get a kick out of conspiracy theories about how the FBI is investigating Auburn football when the FBI is really investigating the failure of Colonial Bank. In fact, if you knew anything about the FBI, you’d know that they investigate EVERY bank that closes or goes bankrupt.
I’m still puzzled as to how you link Lowder to Cam Newton’s dad when there hasn’t been one single report about Auburn and paying Cam’s dad. Last time I checked, it Cam’s dad was linked to MSU, John Bond and what’s his name, I forget. Anyhoo, keep on with the theories.
“I remain firmly convinced that when the NCAA is finished with Ohio State,

Here’s a question that never ever ever gets answered.
Why would Auburn pay Cam Newton to play when no one had ever heard of the guy?
Remember, Cam Newton was a nobody before the beginning of last season. Also, Mark Richt claimed he wanted to recruit Cam as a tight end. Not exactly a high profile recruit, huh?
Bob Stoops and several other coaches, who were interested in Cam, also stated that Cam’s dad did not seek money for play.
Remember, the only school that has been mentioned for paying is MSU.
Good luck with your conspiracy theories, 404.

Yeah, I know all about SMU but I still don’t know what the connection between them and Auburn would be. SMU was outright paying players and they also violated their probation. Auburn hasn’t been accused of paying players nor are they on probation. As far as the Fulmer Cup goes, those 4 players were kicked off the team. With the exception of possibly SC, the SEC East is again pretty much down, so the affects of the inexperience of the OL and Rb’s might be somewhat negated. For the beginning of the season at least, the D is going to have to set the pace and control the game for UGA. About mid season, we will know more about these two. The learning curve will go away if the players are serious about their jobs.

We may be thin, I think we have 11 O-lineman on the roster, plus another 5 freshman (6 if you count the LS we brought in), so its not too bad. Besides the ones we have are behemoths, and the depth we have is mainly 4 and 5 star high school guys that have just been redshirted and fighting some nagging injuries it sounds like. Look at the sizes of some of these guys….
Justin Anderson 6′5 342 lbs.
John Bodin 6′6 321 lbs.
Chris Burnette 6′2 313 lbs.
Kenarious Gates 6′5 328 lbs.
Cordy Glenn 6′5 348 lbs.
Ben Jones 6′3 316 lbs.
Dallas Lee 6′4 300 lbs.
Austin Long 6′5 304 lbs.
Brent Benedict 6′5 312 lbs.
Plus newcomer Watts Dantzler is in the 320-330 lb. range, so we definately have plenty of beef to run the football in the fierce SEC.

David
May 20th, 2011

You hate to hear Offensive Line leaving for personal reasons because this position you really never have enough players because so many of them get hurt In Baseball it is pitching; in Football it is Offensive and Defensive Line help; the team that uses those positions well usually win Football games. In Georgia case, some highly recruit players never play a game because of injury. This has hurt this team the most the last two years; not having enough depth on either Offensive or Defensive Line.
