Ten@10: Freshman TB Isaiah Crowell won’t inherit experienced O-line like Dyer, Lattimore

THE TEN AT 10:

1. With Washaun Ealey’s departure, the inevitable questions about whether Isaiah Crowell can match the freshman performances of last year’s star SEC tailbacks are in full force. But while Crowell’s high school accolades — nation’s No. 1-rated running back, 10-plus yards per carry — are similar to South Carolina’s Marcus Lattimore and Auburn’s Michael Dyer, they had something Crowell will not have: An experienced and intact offensive line.

Auburn had the best offensive line in the country, starting four seniors and a junior, including All-American tackle Lee Ziemba. They paved the way for Dyer (1,093 yards) and run-first quarterback Cam Newton (1,473). South Carolina brought back four returning starters last season when Lattimore came in and rushed for 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns.

Georgia’s offensive line this season will be a comparative patchwork. The Bulldogs will likely start three seniors — center Ben Jones, left tackle Cordy Glenn and right tackle Justin Anderson. But of them only Jones will be playing the same position he did last season. Anderson is coming back over from a one-year experiment on defense and Glenn has played mostly guard  during his career.

That said, it is not a unit devoid of experience. Jones and Glenn have 68 starts between them. Kenarious Gates started three games at guard and played in every game as a true freshman. Anderson has played in 25 games on the offensive line with 12 starts.  Only Chris Burnette, who projects as the starting right guard, is a true greenhorn.

Georgia’s line would have been comparatively similar in experience to Auburn’s and South Carolina’s had Trinton Sturdivant not suffered a season-ending knee injury in the spring. But he did and the Bulldogs were forced to shuffle again. The question now is if they can make Crowell look good, or vice-versa.

2. Georgia Southern boosters are in the process of raising money to have a statue of Erk Russell commissioned and erected in Statesboro. If successful, it’s likely Georgia fans will have had a hand in making it happen.

Former Georgia coach Vince Dooley, for whom Russell earned his reputation as a crafty and inspirational defensive coordinator, is assisting in the fund-raising effort. He has already offered up a substantial contribution of his own and wrote a letter to Georgia Southern alumni and boosters urging them to do the same.

“I was very excited to learn there is a movement to have a lifetime statue erected at Georgia Southern in memory of my long time good friend and coaching associate, the late and beloved Coach Erk Russell. It will be a fitting tribute to one of the great all time football coaches and one of the great all time people that I have ever known. I never knew a coach that was more loved and respected as Erk Russell. His record speaks for itself. . . . I am very happy and totally supportive of this effort which will be a fitting tribute not only to Coach Russell but to his family and to all of the supporters of Georgia Southern and the University of Georgia. God bless his legacy and the wonderful memories he left for us all.”

3. It sounds like you might be able to strike off Georgia Southern from the list of possible destinations for Ealey. I called Rose Carter, the Eagles’ assistant athletic director for sports communications, to find out if they had been in touch with Georgia’s leading rusher, who was granted an unconditional release by the Bulldogs. Her reply: “We have not had any conversations with Washaun Ealey and we will not have any conversations with him.”  “Will not” are the key words in that sentence.4. Speaking of Georgia tailbacks, head coach Mark Richt spoke at the Greenville (S.C.) Bulldog Club on Wednesday and sounded like he was counting on Caleb King to be a leader in the backfield as a senior this season.

“Caleb has become a very dependable football player,” Richt told reporters before the meeting. “People can have a debate on how effective he’s been. But when it comes to knowing what to do, when it comes to pass protection, when it comes to doing the things that we’re asking him to do, he does a good job. I’ve got faith that he knows what to do and will compete well.”

King and offensive lineman A.J. Harmon were benched for the Liberty Bowl because of academic problems. Richt said spring semester grades will not be posted until Monday and, therefore, player eligibility for this fall has not been determined.

5. Sixty-nine athletes, including 12 football players and every senior on the men’s basketball team, will be graduating when UGA holds commencement ceremonies on Friday in Athens.

Among the football players planning to walk are Geno Atkins, Drew Butler, Logan Gray and Tanner Strickland. Also returning after completing  his degree is NFL veteran linebacker Tony Gilbert. Men’s basketball players Chris Barnes, Jeremy Price, Connor Nolte and Gerald Robinson are all graduating.

6. It’s going to be a zoo in Athens this weekend. In addition to commencement ceremonies on Friday at 10 a.m. and 7 p.m., UGA will be hosting men’s and women’s NCAA tennis regionals at the Dan Magill Complex (Friday through Sunday) and the SEC Track & Field Outdoor Championships at Spec Towns Track (Thursday-Sunday). The track competition is expected to draw thousands to the Classic City. As many as 700 men’s and women’s athletes will be participating and friends and family of many of those competitors will surely follow. Here’s a feature I wrote on UGA steeplechaser Matt Cleaver to advance the SEC track meet.

7. Georgia baseball’s postseason hopes have taken a serious hit this week. They were already dinged pretty good after losing two of three at Auburn, then came a t-bone crash with a 4-2 home loss to Mercer on Wednesday. Now it has become a mathematical situation for the Bulldogs. While their RPI remains relatively high, they simply have to end up at least three games above .500 heading into the SEC Tournament to give the NCAA selection committee any reason to consider them come June. That means they need to win at least five of the final seven regular-season games. That’s going to be a tall order with three at Kentucky this weekend, and then home against Kennesaw State and then three home games against No. 1-ranked Vanderbilt.

8. The Macon Telegraph’s Seth Emerson tweeted that the Twitter ban for Georgia men’s basketball players has been lifted by prolific tweeter/coach Mark Fox. Emerson was apparently alerted to this new via a tweet from rising sophomore Marcus Thornton.

9. It’s really exciting to see that the University of Georgia and the Henry W. Grady College of Journalism has established a news sports journalism major. While it has been in the works for a while, the official announcement was made Wednesday. The formation of the program was made possible by a $1 million gift from Atlanta’s Carmical Foundation, which will fund a “Chair in Sports Journalism and Society.”

Don’t be surprised if this doesn’t have an indirect efffect on Georgia’s football recruiting. Jordan Watkins, a defensive end out of Woodward Academy and a top 10 prospect in the state, is a 4.0 student who wants to major in sports journalism.

10. THIS & THAT: The good news that all of Georgia’s season-ticket holders were able to get the tickets they requested for the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game against Boise State in the Georgia Dome. The bad news is some tickets are still available, at least according to one empassioned fan blogger. . . . The Georgia softball team, at one time ranked No. 1 in the country, stumbles into the SEC Tournament, which begins today in Oxford, Miss. The eighth-ranked Bulldogs (45-11, 17-9 SEC) will face LSU having lost four of their last six games, including a loss to Longwood on Wednesday.

I beleive Ealey stated his desire to go and be a premier player at a good school. Why in the lord’s good green earth would he chose tech. then? I think he hopes to showcase himself. Not bury himself deeper in an NFL recruiters mind. CPJ has enough headaches already.

A couple of questions for you. Where do you see Auburn getting 8 wins from? You need to spend a little time looking at the schedules before you start making these bold predictions. The second thing is, do you really think there will be more than 3 undefeated teams in the country this year? Outside of Oklahoma who has only Texas and FSU to worry about, and Boise St. who only plays a very weak UGA team in the home opener in the dome for UGA, there will be a one loss team in the BCS title game, and if a SEC team has only one loss coming out of the SEC CG, then the SEC will get one spot in the game. Third and final thing, name the losses for each team above, your math is way off and once you review you it the mistakes will reveal themselves and enlighten you how far off you are.

I just want to add one more little comment about the records.

MSU , with Dan Mullen at the helm is probably the one team no one will want to play this year. They gained confidence all season and went into the Egg Bowl and beat up Ole Miss, beat a crappy Michigan team in the Gator bowl( convincingly) and return almost their entire team on both sides of the bowl while playing a ton of players last year. MSU will go into Auburn the second week and we will see just how good or bad both teams really are.

Tennessee lost two games on controversial calls that with the current rule changes would have been “wins”, they found their quarterback late in the season and it changed the complexion of that team. They will be a good team under Dooley.

USC, with all the naysayers from UGA talking about revenge, and talking how bad Garcia is, must remember that with A. Jeffries on the outside who is a huge target, Lattimore in the backfield and a ton of offensive talent, if you plan on beating them you had better be able to score points.

Florida, may be one of the worse offensive teams this year in its transistion, but keep in mind their defense is going to be very very stout. Muschamp takes over a ton of defensive talent and you had better be ready to strap it on when you play them.

Arkansas is loaded on offense, but their defense is still pourous and the road games they play will be their downfall.

Ole Miss, is the western division version of UGA, coach on the hot seat, players transferring out, and a deep desire among their fans to get back to winning.

Auburn has road games to Clemson, USC, UGA, LSU, Arkansas and home games against MSU, Florida, and Alabama, they are a shell of what they were and Malzhan’s trick offense was nothing in 2010, Cam Newton was that good and he accounted for 65% of the offense, look back at any team where Malzhan has coached and that 65% number by the quarterback is not what his offense is about. Auburn just lost too much to be a contender and that schedule is a killer.

LSU is loaded and Kragthorpe brought in a new attitude for the offense and Jefferson has flourished, and if he falters Mett will be ready to play.

Alabama will be like the 2009, their defense will win most games for them, and with Carter being that big wideout they needed, they win.

Auburn was 8-5 in 2009 with mediocre players on offense. If the defense had stepped up, Auburn would have only lost 2-3 games. They would have beaten UGA and Bama. With that said, don’t underestimate them. Yeah, they lost a lot of talent but they also signed two straight top 5 recruiting classes and kept their coaching staff in tact. Rocker left for TN but they brought in another bad a$$ defensive line coach.

Either way, it really doesn’t matter matter because Auburn just won the national title. They’ll fly under the radar and do their “thang.”

Auburn will be lucky to become bowl eligible this year. And by the way, 8-4(according to you) does make you a contender. Get some facts on your side before you just go posting crap.

By the way, 26 seniors, 5 players kicked off the team for criminal violations, 3 players left early for the NFL. On an 85 scholarship limit team, there goes 1/3 of your experienced scholarhship players.

It looks like a 4-8 or 5-7 year on the plains.

Not since 1980- What is that evokes confidence in you that Auburn will be remotely good without Cam Newton or Nick Fairley. Without Newton alone you would’ve been an 8-4 team. Without the 2 single most dominating players on both sides of the ball (at the most important positions) you would’ve been 6-6.

So what is it about this year’s team that makes you confident?

Well here are a few items for everyone:

1. Lattimore is the next Herschel Walker …but at USC we are saying he is the next GEORGE ROGERS!! …. Can you say HEISMAN!

2. The best post i read on this blog today is….UGA is where 5 STARs go to be 2 STARS….aka…Steve Spurrier….you just got to love that one.

3. USC will win the SEC East with a 10-2 or 11-1 record then USC will upset Bama or LSU in the SECCG in Atlanta….then on to the MNC game.

4. USC will strike lightening in a bottle….USC wins the MNC!!

5. Did I spell lightening right? I am sure there is a spell checker out there somewhere.

6. Final nugget – UGA dumps Richt at the end of the season; I am not looking forward to that mostly because that means Bobo and Grantham will be gone too.

Crowell is going to be a bust. I saw him in the U.S. Army all america game. He was a no show in that game. The star was 5 star rb Dee Hart who was the game MVP and also the first running back to ever run for over 100 yds in the U.S. army all american game. Dee Hart also set the state of Florida td record with 50 tds in one season. 50 freaking tds! Where did Dee Hart end up? You guessed it! Alabama where he will be a good 3rd team running back and possibly a good 3rd down back. Yeah. We’re that deep at the tailback position.

Everybody knows about Trent “the beast” Richardson who is one of the top challengers for the Heisman this year. And what Mich state got a glimpse of what Capital one bowl leading rusher Eddie Lacy as he bolted through the Spartan defense numerous times for 2 tds including a 50 plus yd td run. We don’t have to bank everything on one true freshman rb. We gots plenty of other options.

Amen Brother!!! I think something that gets lost is this is CMRs FIRST head coaching job, and he came in well positioned with talent and built an intial great staff. Coupled with that he had imediate sucess winning an SEC title in his first year. outside of UF, he has a winning record against every other SEC school. He made a mistake with the WM hire, and recognized that V.Halenger was getting a bit too set in his ways training wise, and has appeared to correct both of those. You make a good point about Joe Pa, and in this world of instant gratification there are several legendary coaches who would not have seen their best success at a given program in today’s 2-3yrs and out if there’s not a championship. Joe Pa, Frank Beamer, Lou Holtz, John Robinson are just a few names that come to mind. Richt also was a part of tremendous sucess at FSU, so in his 25yrs or so of coaching, the last few seasons at UGA have been his worst and FIRST time NOT experiencing sucess. He is also very methodical and not a hair trigger kind of person who will throw the baby out with the bath water as some of you arm chair coaches would have. Let’s see what happens this season and reserve judgement until then.

The Reggie Bush case was unique, in that the NCAA was able to gain info that came to light because of a civil suit. It was not the result of the NCAA going out and finding new evidence, as they can’t compell anyone to give up info. Without that civil suit, in all likelyhood, Bush skates.

Quick question: Did you graduate from U of South Carolina?

Not since 1980

“but I don’t get why any of them would be Auburn fans…I reall don’t.”

That doesn’t make any sense. What you’re basically saying is states can only have one school?

That would mean people in GA could only root for UGA, Florida could only root for Florida etc..

Try thinking before you type such b.s.

AH HA!!

So what you are saying is that Auburn did cheat big time with Cam and probably others but since there is no civil suit…no evidence will surface and thus ….Auburn skates.

You may be right…too soon to tell but we all know Auburn is one of the NCAAs most cheat guilty schools…and history proves that my friend.

Auburn was never accused of anything, C0CK. Last time I checked, it was Cecil Newton, MSU, Kenny Rogers and John Bond.

IE: Not one of them had anything to do with Auburn.

As is UGA, Bama and a lot of other schools.

Hey, what school has been on probation more times since 1980?

Answer: Alabama. They are currently on probation until 2012.
