Caleb King has averaged more than five yards per carry the last two seasons but has struggled with injuries and suspensions. (AJC photo by Brant Sanderlin)
A lot of people may feel like the pressure was turned up on incoming freshman Isaiah Crowell when Georgia and tailback Washaun Ealey decided to part ways this week. I disagree.
As a five-star prospect and the No. 1-rated running back prospect in America, much already was expected of Crowell. And no matter how you slice it, he’s still a true freshman. He’s going to be given the latitude of the learning curve, at least in the early going. He’s not going to be expected to know everything and to do everything just right.
No, if you ask me the heat has been turned up on Caleb King.
King is the fifth-year senior. By default, he is the incumbent starter at tailback.
As such, King is supposed to have the playbook mastered at this point. He should be as proficient a pass blocker as he is a ball carrier. At 23 years old, he’s supposed to be the mature one, the one who leads the other running backs by example.
Whether King has what it takes to do that is unclear. His UGA career has been in a constant state of interruption between injuries and disciplinary infractions. Just last season he missed three games due to suspension and another two and a half with injuries.
Georgia fans have yet to see what a fully-committed, injury-and-suspension-free King might look like.
But when King has been healthy and available, he’s actually been pretty good. He has averaged over five yards per carry each of the last two seasons, an important statistical indicator in the rough-and-tumble SEC. He averaged 5.2 yards a pop when he rushed for 594 yards as a sophomore and 5.4 while getting only 80 carries last year.
And there were indications this spring that he has finally popped free of controversy.
Asked about Crowell’s impending arrival this summer, King said, “He’s still got to come in and work hard because the rest of us are working hard. We’re all busting our tails. I’m going to try to get him under my wing and go from there.”
As for the events that led to his suspensions, he told reporters, “That will never happen again.”
Coach Mark Richt has already assured us that we’ll likely see much of the ballyhooed Crowell in the season opener. “I wouldn’t be shocked to see him running that rock in the Dome against Boise State on the opening play,” Richt said.
But odds are we’ll see even more of Caleb King.

In contrast to Ealey’s disciplinary problems, King’s issues have been mostly injury-related, so I’m not worried about him being a bad influence on Crowell. The bigger concern is how committed Richt and Bobo will be to the running game. In the SEC, it CAN’T be just a change-of-pace after you’ve passed twelve times in a row.
Offensive linemen wear d-linemen down when they fire off the line in run-blocking. If King and Crowell can stay healthy (and that’s not a given for either of them) and Bobo commits to the run, they can be really good. But that’s at least three “ifs” that I’m not too sure about.

It doesn’t matter who the tailback is, CMB will not allow the running game, much less one back, get into a rhythm. Our refusal to be a physical running team costs us ball games. If you can’t line up and get one inch against Central Florida? Wow. We’re not a good running team. We’re a terrible screen pass team. We really have no identity on offense.

The real question is will King show enough in the Spring and early in the season to warrant CMB and CMR giving him the ball 200-240 times this year. He has shown glimpses of success but not sustained effort. Crowell should get the ball 150 times this year if King does his job properly.

We are much stronger at TB with or without Washaun. Look, the near constant problems can be a distraction and drag on the team…wish he could have worked through it, though. Malcome, Thomas and even Hartley can contribute. I think Malcome has much more potential than people seem to realize. He has SEC power, size and speed and all should get better. He is inexperienced. King is a very solid TB, who really knows the whole game and playbook. If he can stay injury, problem, and fumble free, he will do very well. Crowell is a wild card: he could come in green and intimidated by the level jump, and he could make a contribution. He certainly has the potential. Compare this lineup to the start of the last few years and your optimism will grow. BTW, I would love to see King drop some weight and add some speed and quickness. He is fine all around, but his unique gift is his elusiveness. Slowing him down in any way negates his best abilities IMHO.

Go back in time with me to 2008. UGA was preseason number one and UGA fans all over the great state of GA were proclaiming that they’d just won the national title……without even playing one game.
How’d that work out?
5 different SEC teams, almost half the SEC, has won 1 or more titles since 1980. Auburn has gone undefeated more times than ANY NCAA football school. Bama has won 2, TN has won one, UF has won 3 and LSU has won 2 since 1980.

Should the UGA team have faired better than it did? Of course, look at the talent on the roster. Did UGA fans that year have a right to expect great things? I dare say so.
You simply cannot lump irrational blog fans into the group of “all” Dawg fans. Also as a fan what should I expect? To have a losing record every year? Fans ingeneral want to win it all. If they dont this year, then they hope for next year. It is simply not a UGA issue it is a Southern football issue. You happen to surround yourself around many UGA fans. I was for an extended period around tons of South Carolina and Clemson fans. They are the same way. It is a Southern football thing. Richt has never played true freshmen at RB because he is adamant about them learning the protection schemes before he puts them out there. He better adapt his playbook to get Crowell on the field (as Spurrier did with Lattamore). If he is relying on King for any kind of consistent play, then this offense is doomed! King cannot stay healthy, therefore he is not dependable. Making him the starter because he knows the protection schemes better than anyone else is asking for a stagnant offense. I hope Richt realizes this.

I don’t know who will run the ball, but King seems unreliable, so I hope the others are prepared. Thomas has looked nice in the past, maybe even explosive, but I know he is a fumbler. I don’t know Malcombe well enough. Crowell – I hope UGA will give him a thousand carries if he hits campus running and looks like a natural in college the way he does in high school videos.

@Lexdawg and Observation. I think we all agree that the SEC is a defense first league built on speed and strength. The best way to counter a defense like that is to run the ball. Having said that, all the great SEC powerhouse teams over the past 15 years have had dominant D-line types of players. Kids who are man childs that can dominate in the backfield of the opposing offenses. We can talk about offense all day long but it really boils down to that disruptive D-Line pressure.
Each of the past 5 BCS winners had a dominant D line player. Here is a list of those guys.
2007 -UF-Derrick Harvey
2008 – LSU- Glenn Dorsey
2009- UF- Carlos Dunlap
2010- UA- Mount Cody
2011- UA – Nick Fairley
So the question for UGA isn’t the offense but rather whether Jenkins can be that force. Same question with Alabama’s D line. Can’t really quantify Mr. Wizard Les Miles but for Arkansas, another year of watching the development of Petrino’s system, Defenses will catch up. I am not sure Ark has that dominant D line player which will have an effect on them. Having said that, Clowney may prove to be the difference maker at USC…. time will tell.

I read the complaints about King’s fumbles and I don’t understand. Career stats from ESPN:
255 carries, 1271 yds, 10 TDs and no fumbles. His issue has almost always been one of health and winning playing time. If you remember the LSU game, his jaw was broken by a cheap shot. Hard to blame King for that. The real news was a kept playing. I can’t imagine playing in the SEC with a wired jaw.
King also has shown he makes the blocks when they are called for. Picking up a free rusher is critical to any passing game, and he does it well. I look for a healthy King to be the starter with Boo and IC fighting for playing time. I also appreciate the attitude of wanting to help the freshman adjust. That is a veteran putting the team first.

King has proven – repeatedly – that he cannot be counted on. Doesn’t matter whether it’s injuries or stupidity, we know something will happen to keep him out of a good 4 games more than likely. It’s basically a given. That’s how some players are. He’s one of them.
Could that change? Well sure it could! Will it? We’ll have to wait and see. But one thing is for sure. King can’t be counted on to dependably do anything until he actually goes out there and does it.
And obviously we can’t rely on some overrated freshman who hasn’t played a down either. Last time I checked, King came just as highly rated as this Crowell is.
I forget the guy’s name but we had a back 10 years ago say he would be the next Herschel, and as i recall, he was crushed at the 1 on a toss sweep and left with a concussion, never to be heard from again basically….Ware maybe? Anyway, the point is that all this talk, all this blather about how great Crowell is going to be is meaningless until the ball is kicked off….

Chip, i think you need to end the ability to comment on your blogs. Suddenly its a place for someone hiding behind a moniker to simply slam one another school. Its so predictable. It’s old and sophomoric. If you are a fan of UF/Auburn/ALA/GT/TN and you are coming on a blog post about a UGA player, you’re obviously not going to offer anything construction about the discussion. You have one purpose and its to leave trite comments. And you can do it behind your little computer without having to face repercussions. It’s mind boggling to me because I’d never return the favor. Many posters on anything UGA reveal their bitterness on a daily basis. Being bitter is no way to go through life. Enjoy your university’s successes, even when it does not match up with UGA’s. I suspect some of the following reasons explain this:
1. Athens as a college town superior to their favorite team’s
2. Campus at UGA and facilities
3. Widely respected sports program across the spectrum give UGA fans something to cheer about year round.
4. That sports program that has produced over 130 SEC titles and 30 plus National Championships in 8 different sports invites jealousy from those whose university has not been as successful.
5. UGA’s high ranking among public state universities.
And, as Observation’s list of BCS champions indicates, it is a matter of when, not if, the Dogs bring home a NC in football.

Georgia football has been around for over 100 years. It will still be played long after Ealey and King start collecting social security…if that’s even still available then. The point is, this is not about one player, and it never should be. Mark Richt has allowed himself to be somewhat of a doormat with regard to Ealey. However it came to be that Ealey is no longer a Bulldog, I can only say “Good riddance to Bad rubbish.” Ealey has been a discipline problem almost since his arrival.
You cannot build a winning program until you have discipline and cohesion. Get that back first and the rest will come.

I think the dawgs have a great shot at winning the east this year. USC East will fall flat because well, that’s what they do best. Reading the “predictions” about them reminds me of Ole Miss from a few years ago.
Anyway, with CMR being on the hot seat, he’ll have no choice but to keep his team in line and that will help the team out a lot in the long run.
As for the West, Auburn will have a down year for obvious reasons. Bama will lose 2-3 games and LSU will win the West. UGA has a pretty good track record against LSU which makes me believe that UGA will win the SEC this year.

I don’t know many UGA fans saying we are going to win a NC this year, that occurs mainly from posers. It will happen though, just win the SEC, and you have a good chance at it. Only Bama has significantly more SEC football titles than Georgia, UT is barely above them, LSU, Florida, and Auburn have less, so I think it is logical to expect UGA to reel in that NC in the near future.
About women’s gymnastics- you miss the entire point- the 30 plus NCs are spread across 8 different sports. You did not mention your favorite school, but unless it is Stanford, or a handful of others, doubt if they can match the broad-based success of UGA.
And you are correct about nothing to respect about 6-7, that is the very reason Richt must produce this yeqr. If he doesn’t get back to his average of 10 wins per season and finishing in the top ten more than 60% of the time, he will be unemployed. The standards have been set high in Athens.
And if you did some research, you would realize UGA has a high ranking among state public universities.

I think the reason CMR wasn’t fired last year is because McGarity knows how disruptive a head coach change is and after talking with Richt he was convinced that CMR was willing to change from his stubborn attitude of the past. CMR is a great coach but one who needs guidance and McGarity is the man for that. It’s his way or the highway. The UCF lose was probably the worst embarrassing lose in the last 20-30 years. Because of that I think if we start 0-2 McGarity will replace Richt the Sunday after the South Carolina game. But, I also think if we start 2-0 that before the 3rd game McGarity will give Richt a 3 year extension mainly so the recruits will know CMR will be there .

Now for more important things to speak of:
1. I hope Ealey finds a home. I was pulling for him but understand the decision.
2. I believe someone will take a big step forward at tailback. I think it will be Malcome.
3. I believe this team is different in a good way this year and yes, believe it’s going to be a solid season.
4. I’m excited about the receiving group and the TE’s. They will have a big impact on the offense abililty to score touchdowns this upcoming season.
5. I am curious to see if there is an rb that we have not heard of on Georgia’s roster. that may impact the running game? Sometimes there are players who don’t show much in scrimmage but plays big in live games. I remember such a player during the time my son’s played football. The kid was after thought because he wasn’t a stand-out in practice but got the opportunity by default due to injuries and not only led his team in rushing but the conference! Go figure.
Coach Grantham and his assistants seem to have things going in the right direction and hopefully it will have a positive impact this season.
I hope Coach Bobo will open it up and be a little more creative. Like-well you know the teams.
Have a great year.

Let’s see preacherboy has thrown everyone under the bus the past couple of years from his defensive assistant coaches, to his S&C coach, to Mett, and now W.E. Yet he has yet to solve the problem, and that problem is so obvious to everyone associated with the UGA program, except the clown Richt. The problem is Richt and his pathetic O.C. Bobo. UGA has lost more games due to Bobo’s lack of ability to call plays and his lack of ability to establish a running game. Richt continues to believe in Bobo’s ability, and there in lies the problem. Any head coach with any knowledge of how to establish a successful running attack would no bobo is a joke, but not Richt. Hell Richt thinks the same way Bobo does, and that is it’s more important to establish a passing game than the running game. How many times has UGA lost a game because at crush time late in a game, it couldn’t get a first down by running the ball and the clock out. But good ol’ boy Richt will blame it on the defense allowing the other team to come back and win, and not his bonehead O.C. Richt was fortunate to have VanGorder’s defenses to baill his terrible play calling, but now he has no one to bail out BoBo’s terrible calls. But it want matter this year, because Richt has thrown everyone under the bus, and he has blamed everyone, except himself, and bobo. He want have anyone else to blame now. This pathetic head coach will probably blame the DreamTeam for his failure this season, the team he labeled and recruited. This guy is a joke, and he should have never been given this season to put the UGA program behind it’s rivals even farther. Thanks alot McGarity

Mark and Bobo are QBs and they expect a running back to break one for 60 yards, score and then they can return to the passing game. They cannot tolerate letting a back carry the rock 25 times and get stronger. So unless the guy breaks one after two rushing plays, they forget him. That is why we so rarely have a 1000 year rusher. And you can’t win the SEC without rushing the dadgum pumpkin.

If that word confuses you, ask your mommy or daddy and they will try to explain it to you at your level fo comprehension.
As for the article. I beieve Chip is spot on. Crowell should not feel any pressure to step right in and perform at an all SEC level. King needs to step up and actually play to his potential. As a fifth year senior, he needs to exhibit leadership by both his play and his words. He wanted a second chance to be the go to runner and now he has it. Don’t let us down Caleb.

In my opinion, it is not fair to expect Crowell to step right up, and be ready to go unless he really gets into the program and has a fast learning curve when he starts to attend UGA. It is not only the play book he will need to learn. College life is a big step up from high school. It is hard to give individual attention to every need the kid might have when he first arrives at UGA. Now, if he is mature enough to step right into the role of a starter, then that is fine. I am thinking he will need time to acclimate before he is ready, but I could be wrong. He has to know that a lot is being asked of him and whether or not he will be ready to go, that fast is another question. I also question whether it is fair to expect this. Maybe CMR feels he will be, because he let Ealey go, or maybe there was just a zero chance that Ealey even wanted to start maturing as a person and therefore that was a the only thing he could do. I personally think King will have to be ready to go, and to be fair, King may be ready to step it up, now that he may have to be the featured back for a while at GA. He has to know that this is his last chance at a NFL career hi lite film, so who knows. I worry because he seems to be injury prone, but again, maybe the new S and C program, will have him stronger and more physical. Let’s hope so, or it could be a long year for the offense, if Crowell isn’t ready either.

JE

Instead of developing great running backs,d UGA has to develop good blockers for the passing game. There was no excuse in them not developing these running backs and qb’s. If Richt sticks to his philosophy, Crowell will not play until he learns how to block. Saying he probably will run the ball vs BSU was not the best thing to do. He basically turned his back on all he work the RB’s have done in their career at uga. Poor judgement on his part.

JE,
I think it is the nature of the beast so to speak. Some of these really athletically gifted players, have the old entitlement attitude and can’t handle actually having to conform to a rigid schedule, training regiment and the rules of the team. They were spoon fed in high school because they were good atheletes and I believe in some cases, although this is just my belief, their grades were massaged to make them appear better academically, then they really are. Couple that with a caring coach like CMR, who bends over backwards to help them and you just sometimes end up with a bust on your hands. I believe the CMR of the future we will see, is now a little more rigid and maybe will not be so tolerant of the individual, since he has been taken advantage of one time too many. These kids have to grow up a little and realize what a tremendous opportunity they have and are throwing away. The pressures are unique on them once they get into college, but at some point, they need to become mature.
I hope the offensive line will step up this year and I am not sure what has been the real problem before this. Could be S and C, or maybe they were just a little over rated. We need some blue collar type players there. You don’t have to be an all american but you do need to have good fundamentals and be able to communicate with the rest of the line. Hopefully, they will step up this year, because we will need the protection for the QB and lanes for the RB’s to hit.

Yes it does. It always amazes me to see Ford F-150s with a giant Greenbay logo, I mean Georgia logo, on the rear window yet these same people never set foot in a UGA classroom. I’ve been around UGA fans who rant about how Auburn is a crappy school yet these same buffoons don’t even have a college degree. I’ve been around UGA fans who’ve said that Bama students cheat in the classroom yet these same buffoons barely finished high school.
There’s a certain pride that graduates of schools have with their football team mainly because these people actually paid to go to said school. I have no beef with UGA grads or GT grads. I have a problem with fans who make fun of other universities when they themselves never went to one.

Observation is a gutless coward who will talks trash about UGA and will not remotely talk about the actual article on a UGA website. And there is nothing wrong with being a fan of a team without going to school there. If there was only one public school in each state there would be a lot of people not going to college every year. This is why the Georgia States, West Georgias, Valdosta States all play an important role in State education. As a public university UGA and countless other schools represent the state of Georgia and undoubtedly are funded in some part by State taxes. UGA has not had a NC since 1980 and that is a fact indeed. They are I think tied for third in SEC with overall SEC titles which is not bad.

If King can get the blocking (which is somewhat suspect right now), he’ll do fine. With 80 carries last year and a 5.2 yd average ain’t bad. He’s experienced and should have some help from Crowell. I look for Murray to pass a lot more until Crowell gets in groove. Sad things didn’t work out with Ealey. He’s a good athlete and I wish him well. We may see more of him in the NFL someday and I hope so for his sake. Coach Richt knows a player must have what it takes between the ears as well as athletic talent. Dawgs will be fine. I say they will win at least 10 games and better if they can beat SC and those feared Gators. Go Dawgs!!

this is a year old and does not take into account for last year….just to lazy to update it but…..

Fact:………UGA was 12-1 in 2002
.
Fact ………Fla was 12-1 in 2006
.
Fact ………Not UGAs fault there were 2 unbeatens that year. “unlucky”
.
Fact……….Not Flas credit that there was only one unbeaten in 2006. “Lucky”
.
Fact:………Luck had more to do with Fla getting invited to the BCS than whether Fla was more deserving to go to a NC with identical records.
.
Fact:………No SEC team has ever lsot a NC game and if UGA would have been invited nothing indicates that it would have been different
.
Fact……….UGA has 2 SEC titles..same as Fla in last 9 years and equal wins over all.
.
Fact……….UGA has been ranked more times top ten in last 9 years than any SEC team.
.
UGA 90 wins in 9 years no other SEC team has more.

2006 FLA 12-1 and SEC champs, ranked 4th and waited to if Mich, tOSU or USC lost

Did Fla sprinkle pixie duct on USC and Mich to make them lose?

No….and thats the only difference between the 2002 bulldogs and the 2006 gators

Enough with the diatribe and ugly insults. I enjoy this blog b/c I am a Dawg Fan and I like hearing from other Dawg fans and even our rivals..when the talk is about football….not personal attacks on our State, its citizens, our history and our University…Most Dawg fans are hopeful,…we are proud not obnoxious, and we are loyal, not delusional…everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I agree with an earlier post, AJC needs a filter on some of these folks..Good luck to King and Cromwell…we will need them both to have great years if competing for SEC Title.

Thanks for following Chip. Seems I have already been banned, so I had to switching my name just to reply to you!
I got your warning loud and clear and will play nicely. I must add a few last comments though, now that I have your attention. The AJC is where I come for UGA sports. That will likely end if you guys can’t find a way to control the inflammatory remarks that get posted here. I have tried to make ignore the cretins many times, but as you know, the comments on an article can go on for more than 10 or 20 pages sometimes. It is impossible to follow a thread of comments when more than half of them are from just 5 people insulting each other.
I realize that you don’t make the policy, but as a jounalist, you must appreciate where I am coming from. You can’t possibly have time to wade through and offer meaningful insight to fans that ask you questions.
So, what can I do? Who can I contact to make a change? I’ll do my part if you’ll do yours. The integrity of the AJC is on the line when they encourage a donnybrook in their comment section. The AJC would never print the majority of these comments in their paper, so why allow it here?

So are you “astrouga ” or “ugastro?” Chip mentioned something about people “name changing.”
Oh, there are plenty of UGA blogs that are REAL UGA blogs. I also love how you point out remarks from non-UGA fans but don’t say a word about the insults from UGA fans.
“So, what can I do? Who can I contact to make a change? ”

Observation,
I made a comment initially — but it got wiped because I complained
about all of the arguing! I can’t use astrouga or ugastro anymore
because they have both been banned, it seems.
Also, this is a serious UGA blog…are you kidding? Chip is a respected journalist.
As far as a UGA comment goes, I’ll say what I have said many times
regarding the running back situation: UGA is not running back edu. We
had had a few decent backs, but that is it. Too many people are
already claiming Crowell is going to rush for 1000 yards this season
– are you kidding? The kid hasn’t even played a down of college ball.
UGA just needs a few backs to produce each game. They don’t need a
100-yard back, just 100+ yards a game. Defense and passing are the
best hope for UGA this year.

I beleive the coaches said that King was already a better blocker than Ealey was last year. King just needs to stay healthy and step up to the plate with the right attitude and work ethic, both on and off the field. I think he now knows that he needs to do that so I suspect, his spirits just got a boost when Ealey took his toys and went home. It will take time for Crowell to get comfortabvle in the system of college football, and get over the fact, that now, all the hype and hope pinned on him will have to be earned on the field.
