Washaun Ealey: ‘I want to be a premier back’ and not ‘have to share backfield’

Washaun Ealey has not returned my phone calls seeking comment but Gentry Estes over at Dawgs247.com was able to talk to him. Here’s a link to that report (registration required).

Ealey

Ealey

Ealey told Estes that the decision to transfer was as much his as it was Georgia’s and that the main reason he wanted to leave was not having to share carries with Caleb King, Carlton Thomas, Ken Malcome and, of course, incoming freshman Isaiah Crowell.

“I’m a person where I want to be a premier back,” Ealey told the website. “If I was to play here, I would have had to share the backfield with Caleb and Carlton also. Then they were going to try to give the freshman Isaiah his chance. He probably was going to get some carries at the beginning of the year too. I just felt like I didn’t want to be in that mix of things anymore.”

Ealey said the decision to leave “was best for me” and that he does not have a destination yet.

“I just wasn’t feeling the vibe, I guess,” he said.

CMR said, if Crowell comes in and does what he needs to do, he could be toting the ball when they play Boise. Don’t believe he said, Crowell would be the number one RB or Ealey would never see the field. This statement I believe was to try and motivate Ealey, and boost Crowell up a little. Let’s face it folks, CMR knows Crowell has a big learning curve to obtain, and a lot of adjustments to make. It was like saying, if he can do it and wins the postion, he will be rewarded. Ealey chose to be immature in his thinking and not take responsibility for his own predicament. It is all about team work, not me work. Hopefully, King can keep that 5.4 YPC average up for a whole season and allow Crowell to acclimate to college ball and the much more rigid schedule than he has had before.
It is Kings last chance to shine before he out in the world and hopefully, he realizes it. I believe he will as I believe he has probably grown up a lot this summer and realizes with Ealey gone, he has to become a leader and a reliable back now, that he is a senior.

The last drive in the SG with him running the ball and Lemay at QB imo was the best offensive series of the game. He certainly ran with conviction that series. Looked like a Ridley type runner from LSU.

If I’m a back that needs to get 20 yds a carry, and who gets stronger as game goes on, then I, too, want to be in a situation where that happens. UGa never seems to know who and when to play their backs. I would have given it to Ealey 20x a game as long as he averaged 5yds a carry. He would have deserved it.

@truedawg

His build reminds me of Lattimore and you’re right, from what I saw at the G-Day game, he definitely has the ability to thump someone. We just need our OL to give him some room to boogy.

Interesting about how blogs are blasting Ealey and saying good riddance now that he is gone (Thank you, Greg McGarity, not Richt), who were until then praising him. Fact is, he was a POS, then and a POS, now. I’d rather have a good team oriented player rather than a 5 star me, me, me player any day, and probably get more wins out of them. I don’t think Bosie State, Utah, and TCU are getting the 5 star players. Coaching is what is really needed. As Bear Bryant said, “I can take your players and beat mine, and I can take my players and beat yours.” Coaching, coaching, coaching, not “dreams teams”.

I was at many practices and Washaun was easily the best back we had the past two seasons. He could and should be our premier back but had HUGE setbacks against USCe, Miss St, then a missed assignment that almost got Murray decapitated against Arky. All of those plays were game changers. Those games combined with an outright lie to CMR about the drivers license ended the relationship. I now know that the hamstring was fake and they were just waiting until after spring practice to announce the transfer. That is what I thought and said that many times on this blog.

One thing that worries me is the question…. Is the UGA staff ever going to dedicate itself to 1 “premier” back? Bobo has changed so much since the days of Musa Smith or even Knowshon. I just don’t understand our playcalling or schemes. CMR is taking a huge risk by not getting another offensive coordinator last Winter. I wish him the best.

When Richt came out and said Crowell would be used “heavily”, before Crowell earned it through practice or conditioning, he lost Ealey right there.

Insider, If a premier back steps ups and takes care of business I could see another Knowshon toting the rock for the dawgs. I think Richt learned from his RS of Knwoshon. I don’t think it will happen again IF the right guy steps it up. They should all know that if they do step it up then they could be a 1st round NFL draft one day.

Insider,

Nice post. CMB does seem to go away from the run when he shouldnt. Stick with the run when he shouldnt , and rotate backs at a alarming rate. I am fine with Ealey being gone though. He had his chances. He just failed to do the right things.

Another good quote from “The Bear” goes something like this. I make my practices real hard because if a kid is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice and not in the game.”

Ealy has 4.8 40 speed. Doesn’t block well. Bad attitude.
He’s less than half the back Thomas Brown was.

But yeah, he had a lot of yards in ghsa A class football.

For what it is worth, I “turned on the stud” after he fumbled on the 2 yd. line in Columbia, almost got Murray killed against R kansas and then fumbled AGAIN on the goal line againt Mississippi State. This latest BS has got nothing to do WITH ME and when I turned on the punk!

Ealey also led the team in game changing dumb fumbles, missed blocks and dropped passes in every quarter of every game he played in with too many to count.

Ealey missed blocks at key times cost us games. Murray would have won 3 more games with Crowell instead of Ealey.

Ealey will likely go in the NFL draft near where Mark Ingram went. Their numbers were similar in 2010 in td’s and ypc.

Lowcountry Bulldawg

No one turned on Ealey. Ealey turned on himself. He gave up on his opportunity at UGA. When the NFL scouts come to Athens and ask Richt about Ealey’s tenure and attitude while there lets hope Ealey has validated this move. He certainly has not put himself in a good light at this juncture. This is a Ealey failure to take responsibility for his own actions and not working his ass off on the field.

Maybe he can get that opportunity at Ga Southern..but he has never proven he deserves the rock at this level and no matter what level he plays, if he is still a discipline problem he will fail there as well. I wonder what part of “it is my fault ” he doesnt understand? good riddance.
