Mark Richt to Macon Bulldog Club: ‘I know what the hell I’m doing, OK?’

I was in Augusta Wednesday night for the Georgia Bulldog Club tour stop there and found coach Mark Richt to be calm and typically laid back. Other than his pointed comments on Washaun Ealey, the meeting was generally warm and fuzzy and it came and went without much controversy.

That wasn’t the case in Macon last night. According to my old friend Michael Lough, who covered the meeting for the Macon Telegraph, Richt got a little feisty with one particularly whiny fan. In the question-and-answer session, one man apparently droned on and on about Georgia’s poor running game last season and his apparent dissatisfaction with offensive coordinator Mike Bobo and running backs coach Bryan McClendon.

That apparently lit a fire under Richt.

“I see your frustration, I understand your frustration,” Lough quoted Richt as saying.“I wasn’t born yesterday, I’ve coached football for 25 years, so I know what the hell I’m doing, OK? . . . I appreciate your passion, I appreciate your support for this football team. Everybody can just calm down and know that we’re in good hands. . . . And Bryan McClendon is a hell of a coach, he’s a hell of a recruiter. And I’m glad we got Bryan McClendon.”

Richt’s remarks, Lough reported, elicited a strong ovation from the crowd gathered at the Walnut Creek Shooting Preserve.

Not surprisingly, the normally-chaste Richt apologized a short time later for using the word “hell.” But he also reiterated his disappointment in the tailback situation and the fact that none of the lettermen have stepped up and seized the position in anticipation of Isaiah Crowell’s arrival later this summer.

So what do you think? Glad to hear such passion come out Georgia’s sometimes staid head coach? Disappointed with his word choice?

This is what I have been praying for from CMR since he came to UGA. The non-plussed attitude and blank look on his face (we call it fish face around here) when things are going south on the field just get under my skin. I’m not asking him to go all Woody Hayes on players but come on, show some passion, some emotion, some anger. ANYTHING.

Way to go Mark. By the way, I’m a Tech alum and it makes no difference whether you’re talking about Richt or Johnson, it’s their job (for years) and they’ve probably thought of just about every possibility before you came up with the “brilliant idea”.

I want a head coach, especially and offensive head coach, to stay calm on game day first because I feel it gives a team more confidence when things aren’t going their way and second because when he does get on fire everyone stops and listens.

Now, if CMR can focus that same passion towards his own program, we might actually have something. He has only been a head coach for 10 years. Being a head coach is a lot different than being a position coach. As a head coach, he has to make tough staff decisions. As a head coach, his loyalties have to include the fan base, not just his staff. CMR has proven to be a great assistant/position coach, but he has not proven to be a great head coach. He seems slow to make changes to the staff when all the evidence is pointing to issues.
UGA has had more NFL prospects over the last 10 years than 200+ other D-1 teams, but not a lot to show for it.

Richt has passion and you can bet last year was worse than just a disappointment. I’m a fan but I don’t live and die with the Dawgs. I have my own worries and responsibilities. This is Richt’s focus and I trust him to right the ship. I like the changes on defense and I think the passing game was great last year. The running game let the team down, and Richt is aware of the situation. I bet he even has a good idea where the issue are, and how to fix them. That’s his profession and he is one of the best.

Last year in Cobb I noticed he was a little testy with some of the questions because they were more than disrespectful. People try to back him into a corner and then act surprised when he verbally fights his way out. I also noticed that crowd was similar to Macon this year; both audiences appreciated him taking control of the situation. Just because he’s a christian, don’t believe he’s a wimp. Attack him or his team at your own peril.

I think the problem has been with the OL. Hard for a back to gain any yardage with poor blocking up front. Two years ago, we were supposed to have one of the top OL’s in the country what happened? Glad U of Texas helped us resolve some of the problem. Hope this new young coach CMR hired will get the job done.

Loren Hunt

The fan was right. The running game stinks and has so since Moreno left. The running backs are mediocre at best and the running back coach is one of the ones who should have been fired when the shuffling took place last year. If Coach Richt is too blind to see this after his 25 years of coaching, then he should be the next to go.

Well, what the “hell” did you expect to hear at the Walnut Creek Shooting Preserve?

I-DOG

April 29th, 2011
10:56 am

In the meantime, we got a very good DE/OLB prospect out of Eastman this week. In my humble opinion that is where we need some quality AND some quantity in this year’s class. If we can only sign 16 or so, I’d like to see us get at least 4 DE/OLB blue chippers.

We seem to have lost some of our depth there to dismissals, transfers, and injuries from the last 2-3 classes.

Richt getting a little fiesty on the rubber chicken circuit neither helps us nor hurts us. He didn’t go nuts on the guy and at the same time, Richt has to expect some negative feedback for the season we just suffered through. I am cautiously optomistic about what I heard about from Spring practice. Still concerned with OL (no real reason we shouldn’t be good there, but that was true last year and we weren’t). Also concerned with safety and I like the idea of pairing a more mature Rambo with a solid walk on type who doesn’t have great athleticism, but is in the right spot and wraps when he tackles.

CMR brought this on himself; he brought down the wrath for waiting almost too long to step up and take this team and UGA a little more serious and quit playing Daddy ball. I hope that he has turned things around. I definitely feel that he has made many long time coming positive changes. The guy in Macon said what a lot of people on these blogs have been saying a long time about Bobo. I was on here last year wanting to know why Bobo was getting beat up when he was scoring 30 points per game on many occasions. Our offense wasn’t the reason that we had a losing season. I bet Boise State can’t get here soon enough for Richt. I like Richt and hope he stays but he could really use more passion.

Herschworld

April 29th, 2011

It’s not the players, it’s not the coaches, it’s the concept. The offense is predictable and uninspiring. Georgia’s run game is a power rungame, but they aren’t physical enough to be a power run team..They can’t push around Florida’s front, Auburn’s Front, Ala’s front…They got to either mix it up a bit scheme wise or start eating a lot of wheaties because what they’ve done the past 4 years aint’ working. They really need to hit the chalkboard and develop some wrinkles in the run game

I hear ya CMR. I played a little college ball at the DII level in South Ga. Most can figure the school out because Hal Mummy was there, Leach, Holgrom, Majors, etc…… All of those guys are either at or were at a big time school. You think they held back on words when someone pushed THAT buttom, Hell no, and it made me a better player. Not because they cursed at me but because I knew deep down they wanted me to be a better player or do better at what I was doing or what they were asking of me. I’m not saying CMR is a Leach or a Mummy, I would never put him in that category but COME ON MAN… I’m glad to hear the fire in the belly for a change. I have a strong faith as well but there are times when things can be expressed through words, especially in his position and if he says it, so be it. GO DAWGS!!!!!

When a coach starts acting out of character its a tell-tale sign that the pressure of the job is getting to him. We should have cut him lose last year. Tennessee waited too long for Fulmer and look at their program for the last 5 years. UGA is headed there if we don’t make a change soon.

I never understood the support of our fan base for a very mediocre coach. We never go to the SEC championship game anymore much less win it? WAKE UP!

Can’t blame Richt for his response, but he has to realize that people all across the state and the country are his “customers.” It is a fact that many of them are not happy with the recent performances and take out their frustrations by trying to back him into a corner.

Richt and UGA might be better served if he directed that passionate response towards Bobo, McLendon and the UGA running backs.

Being an Alumnus I have to say that I cringe at some of the posts on here by UGA fans. Makes me wonder sometimes about what people from other colleges say about the stupidity of some of our fan base.
Right now that team just needs to focus on conditioning and Boise St. I look forward to the fall to see if this can be a year that we are back in the hunt. Questions will be answered the 1st 2 games.

I’m going to disagree with Richt. I don’t think he has a clue what he’s doing. If you look at the last 4 National Champs, they all averaged between 215 to 284 rushing the football, all were in the SEC, LSU, Florida, Alabama, and Auburn. It’s not a passing league. Spurrier ate Richt’s lunch last year by ramming the ball down his throat with Lattimore for 188 yards and went on to win the SEC East. Everybody has changed, except Richt. Richt’s stubborn, doesn’t learn from his mistakes, is absolutely clueless as to how to win a National Championship in the SEC today. This isn’t FSU in 90’s. If Richt’s way works so well, why did he go 7-5 in 2009 & 6-6 in 2010? We need to get Richt out, he’s not going to change, Murray will chuck it 50 times a game in 2011, let’s get somebody in who can play smashmouth football, enough of this finesse offense.

So, if that’s true, why did Richt go 6-7 last year with AJ Green, who experts like Gruden called the #1 guy in the draft this season? Something doesn’t add up. Richt’s passing a lot. And went 6-7. On and off the field problems, arrest and suspension on team members for off the field problems among other thnigs. There are some problems within the staff. We all can see that. Lets just wait and see what happens this season. So he did not take up for “BOZO” in his comments. We need an O coordinator and bad. Play after play last year.

Arkansas – not having a back that could block in the game on the biggest play of the game cost us the game and nearly cost Aaron Murray his carreer. Other teams have been using tight ends, fullbacks in those situations for years but not BOZO. Let’s keep a bhack in that could not block BOZO. Also having no receivers run a route within 20 yards of the QB on that play.

Florida – the whole game. AJ with 9 yards receiving going into the 4th quarter. All of the play calling in OT.

All season –
Pass on first down, run on second. If a fan in south georgia can figure this out. You think the rest of the league, who watch film daily, may have.

Running Calton up the #$%^%$ middle. As Richard Pryor once said, “How long will theis #$$%^% go on?”

Frankly, that stumbling, bumbling, non clock watching, Michigan grad in Baton Rouge callls better plays thaN BOZO.

Richt is a great coach. The problem with UGA has been Gators and one ex-Gator. Boise State is the biggest UGA game of the season. The players all know it as comments during spring season indicated. A UGA loss against Boise State assures that UGA will not be in the SEC championship game. Can’t have the SEC throwing an undefeated Boise under the bus while their East champion lost to them. Even the most loyal Kool-Aide drinker will have to spit that out. So, if Boise wins, UGA will not get the “calls” against other SEC teams.

Inbreeders, football games are won by great game planning (which has become as intricate as the development of the star wars defense system), great game adjustments to scheme (because the coach is aware of what is happening and how to counter when needed), and who has the best athletes (recruiting). Emotion derived from a coach lasts about 15 seconds or until you get cracked in the mouth on the first play.

I understand this fans’ frustration, too; especially with regard to Bobo. However, I would not like to know that my job was trying to extract any kind of performance from the half-wits these coaches have to put up with daily. The collective I.Q. has to be somewhere in the 32 range. Still, were it not for their dismal 2010 performance, this stuff would not come up. Point man takes the first shot.

I do not understand what is so controversial about questioning Richt’s coaching after we just went 14-11 the past two seasons. I do not understand what is so controversial about questioning the running game after we just finished 10th in the SEC in rushing. If I had been there I would have given the standing ovation to the brave gentlemen who asked these questions, not to coach Richt. My allegiances are to University of Georgia Football, not to Mark Richt. No one man or coach is bigger and more important than the program as a whole. Most unfortunately, it appears that most UGA fans don’t agree. They view any criticism of Mark Richt as criticism of UGA football itself. This is the same attitude that Germans had when Hitler was in power. That is a very dangerous and destructive mentality.

The point is you have a fan here (who pays Richt’s salary, by the way) with legitimate concerns who asks Richt some questions.

And Richt basically responds with contempt, like he is above even having to take the question seriously. He goes so far as to mock the man, saying you are “obviously close to an expert.”

When things are tough, people’s true colors come through. This totally changes my opinion of Richt. I think he needs to apologize for this immediately.

CMR’s problem is that he’s good at saying something or trying to convince fans of something when the facts are the complete opposite.

He can preach all day that he knows what he’s doing when results on the field prove that, in fact, he doesn’t. A lot of talent has been wasted by him and his coaching staff.

I’m glad to see the fire in his attitude but it’s too little too late. If UGA doesn’t win the SEC East this season, CMR is history and he knows it.

FINALLY a little fire from a Georgia coach. This is what everyone has wanted to see. Thank you coach for showing us you are a human and well driven to find an answer. I say you bench Ealy and King and never let them see the field. Put little Carlton Thomas and Ken Malcolm back there until Crowell can come in and show off his talents. I am frustrated at these punk ass kids getting fourth and fifth opportunities to produce and doing nothing but wasting time and others player’s efforts. They weren’t brought to Georgia for their intelligence, or to cure cancer, but to play football and get an education. From the outlook and reports, it seems as if King and Ealy aren’t doing either, so I say you bench them. We made it through last year with two quarterbacks, so we can dang sure make it through with three running backs.

But just a reminder we actually lost by less than the other big games they played bama, fla. and if not for ealeys fumble that would have been a very winnable game. Heat’s on anderson. McGarity is shrewd.

Think about it.

Richt is not “his guy”. He didn’t hire him, he inherited him.

Richt has done nothing to prove himself worthy of being coach at Georgia since McGarity arrived.

What does GM do? Schedule Boise State.

Richt wins that one and beats SC, goes on to 10, 11 or more wins, Richt gets his contract extension and McGarity has his question answered.

Lose the first 2, Richt is done, McGarity gets his answer in a different way.

From waht I read, Richt went through a long detailed direct (as the article says, polite) response to his “concerns”.

I would bet that if Richt thought he had truly offended the guy personally, he would remedy that. As far as him wondering if he offended somebody in the blogs who read a third party report, I would imagine he doesn’t feel like that’s his problem. (realizing of course he could have given the man roses and a hug, and the reaction from said person would be equally as negative)

Good PR stunt Georgia and CMR,

You people can say what you want to. So what, he has been a coach for 25 years. Then he should not have let this come to this point. You have to keep winning and stop being so laid back. Look where that has gotten him. He knows what he is doing. The play over the last few years shows otherwise. Instead of saying it, show us the NC and that will quiet all the naysayers. Personally I’m tired of hearing excuses and BS. Time to put up or shut up. Criticism is a good thing sometimes and he deserves a lot of it. No, I’m not the head coach but, a blind man can see when there need to be some changes. MCclendon is not responsible for the two knuckle head action off the field but, he is in charge of the develpment on the field and he is not getting it done. Also the WR coach is not getting the max. out of the WR. Show us on the field and it will change our opinions.

I wouldn’t give him his extension until the end of his contract at this point. He hasn’t earned it and a short term performance won’t get it in my book. He’s been asleep at the wheel for several years, I personally want to see him work his a$$ of and get back in good graces, you know, do things the “Georgia” way, kinda like he’s looking for Washaun to do.

Finally a fan asks Richt a non-vanilla question and then Richt attacks the fan’s comment. Richt was hired to make UGA competitive. He did this his first 6 years. But the last couple of years the team has fallen behind other SEC vteams including Fla.,Auburn,LSU,Arkansas,SC,and Bama. So being the 7th best SEC team is no reason for UGA fans to be concerned ? The crowd should have applauded the guy asking the question.

I agree there is no point in extending his contract till the season end. I can’t see what point that would serve. Where I see it slightly different than some is that I don’t believe that Richt would want that.

As I see it, you lose all the theatre from the “show” of appreciation for a job well done IF things to turnaround. And it’s far worse for UGA AND Richt if the contract talk are a distraction in the middle of the year, plus I just don’t see any benefit. Worst case, it could be a disaster.

What I am positive of is that this has all been discussed many times by those 2 guys, and I doubt there is any disagreement.

I have to agree with Coach Richt’s AD McGarity, you have a coach who loses more games than the previous season 7 out of last 8 seasons. It’s not like Coach Richt’s going to figure this out. So McGarity schedule a tough opener and then a bunch of home games, where McGarity knows Coach Richt has a worse record at home games than away games. Then when Coach Richt has a bad season, AD can go ahead and fire him and say we gave him every chance.

Coach Richt’s a LOT better in AWAY games than HOME games, coaches are out recruiting during home games instead of preparing fdor the game, so I expect this year to be brutal, 5-7 at best.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.

Richt represents mediocrity. Coaches like Saban, Miles, and Spurrier represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Actually, Richt has no class and neither do his drunken, illiterate players. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.

Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.

As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”

Like him or hate him, he has the best record ever at UGA..He raised the bar for himself and the school. Yes his teams have started a backward slide. He made changes, so lets see what happens. GM isn’t an idiot, the schedual is set up to see what we can do. Either way, CMR show’s he’s still one of the best out there, or he gets fired and we see the winningest coach EVER at UGA shiped off. I predict a 10 or 11 win team and a top 5 finish and no contract extension…he retires and then all the bandwagon jumper will ahev a new coach to complain about when we go 20 years without a SEC title.

This “fan” should have felt lucky to be in the same room with Richt, much less try to act like he knows more than Richt. There’s a reason this “fan” isn’t a D1 football coach.

I remember when Caleb King was going to come in and become the next Hershall Walker…he’s proven to be a bust to this point. Ealey is good….WHEN he holds onto the ball. These guys were ’sold’ to UGA from coaches that wanted ‘their’ guys playing at the D1 level…you REALLY don’t know what you’re going to get once they’ve arrived. He won’t face more than 5 bad teams in 2011 (Tenn & Tech will be better, Kentucky plays Richt tough).

And he gets smashed against good teams like a sledgehammer on steroids (0-6 against winning teams in 2010) so automatic 5 losses to top 25 teams Aub, Fla, S. Caro, Mississippi St & Boise.

Good to see some emotion – every team will go through a rebuild period.

The trick is to stagger the talent to where you are reloading.

However, with injuries, juniors leaving early, behavioral attrition, etc – sometimes the numbers skew – and you have to rebuild.

Three biggest contributing factors to last years dismal season:
1. New Defense – switching to a 3-4 cost us some games – Alabama lost to La Monroe Sabans first year as Bama switched to a 3-4. Next season – and with a Nose Tackle – Bama was much improved – let’s hope the same for UGA

2. O-Line Play – probably a combination of coaching, mental attitude and physical preparation – we just did not dominated in the 4Q. Never could get the running game to WOW anyone.

3. Discipline. Coach Fox ran the hell our of his Basketball team – with the message – off field issues will correlate to issues on the floor. Well, UGA won the Fulmer Cup – our RB’s spent time suspeneded, our stud WR missed 4 games (overkill), etc.

You add up the three reasons above – you wind ug 6-7.

I hope Richt is very successful – I really like this guy. But if he has been doing this for 25 years – why did we have the discipline issues, the conditioning issues and the O-Line coaching issues we had.

I understand the defensive issues – new DC – new Scheme – got to get that nose bloodied.

Go Dawgs!

If Richt knows what he is doing why did his staff ask Ealey to block a defensive end and think there would be a positive outcome at the end of the Arkansas game? More people should be asking Richt the same questions this fan did. Instead of lauding Richt’s false bravado they should be questioning his track record. He has done less with more talent than anyone in America who is currently paid millions to coach football at the collegiate level. His style worked in Athens for a few years but other programs have ramped it up and left Richt in the dust.

Amazing, attacking a fan for complaining to a $3 million coach about a running game that finished 10th in the SEC. UGA is not even relevant in college football any more. By the way, kicking on 4th and 3 inches from the UCF 2 yardline, I’d say the Macon fan had a good point.

Just win and you will shut up the whiners. I agree that 90 percent of fans have never touched the ball, or played a down, but those 98 percenters are the people who paid attention in school, have real jobs, and thus can pay those escalating ticket prices. Therefore, you can’t tick them off too bad.

I personally believe Richt’s loyalty to his asst coaches will take him down in 2011. I am not going to sit here and rehash all the bonehead calls that Bobo has made in big games but I will put it this way – I would not give Bobo the check mark against ONE of the D-Coordinators in our league. I blieve Richt was out recruiting prior to the bowl last year and left our coordinators in Athens to game plan and prepare the team…WE GOT BEAT BY CENTRAL FLORIDA!!!! If Bobo is calling plays on Sat. next season I truly don’t expect anything different than we got the last 3 years – no signature wins. I do expect the defense to be much improved and the offense to look like well the last 3 years. I would think the money has tailed off since pre-season #1 ranking season and we all know money talks and BS walks. Tubberville said in a press cinference after beating UGA in Richt’s 1st or 2nd season that Richt would learn you have to run the ball in this league…I don’t see it. I see a coach that was riding the the success of Van Gorder and downhill since VG left for greener pastures. Willie never deserved to be a coordinator and neither does Bobo…just my opinion (oh and by the way Bobo rcvd a $30,000 retention raise after last season – WOW). We will find out early what we have next year. My expectations are based on what we all witnessed the last 3 years and beyond.

The word “Hell” is not profanity. It is the proper name
of the Eternal place of torment in the Bible and the first
time the name was used in scripture it was spoken by Jesus
Christ who ought to know…………. he’s God.
“Damn” is a minor expletive. It’s what people are who reject Jesus Christ as Savior. They’re “damned” in “Hell”.
Read scripture folks before you run down a great coach and
a great example to young people.
There are some people who don’t like Richt because he speaks his mind and shows his genuine faith. The term “Preacher man” used in a previous post shows the ‘
real underlying cause of the criticism.

I find it very interesting that all of you negative commenters on here can actually think that McGarity is trying to get his own coach fired. He has helped him a lot from what has been reported and I think CMR has that fire in his gut because he feels good about his job and AD. I would much rather find out a lot about my DAWGS playing some strong competition for the first game, then to wonder what my team will look like, when the first game, for 9 out of 12 of all you terrific SEC power houses are against cream puffs. Alabama fans, you should have a real easy time figuring out what your team is composed of, with the first tough game against, that powerhouse Kent State. And Auburn, I bet Utah State has you shaking in your boots. LSU, Georgia and Ole Miss. are the only three teams playing real teams in the first week. 9 of the rest of the SEC are playing Patsies at best. Scrimmage teams.

Two points.

One, Coach Richt does show emotion during games. What he doesn’t do, is lose control. I have seen him get angry with officials, and it has been shown on TV. He then goes back to coaching the game.

Two, if you reread the account of his remarks to the know-it-all fan, he did NOT cuss the guy out. The majority of his words were respectful of the fan and in support of his coaches, but marked clearly by anger or frustation as indicated by his bringing up his 25 years of coaching and his use of the interjection he chose.

DawgVoiceofReason

There is a point at which the know-it-all fan, who has the nerve to lecture the head coach on what he ought to be doing and the quality of his coaches, is going to push any head coach too far. Coach Richt listened to what he had to say and then passionately responded. I personally am sick of people on this blog, and on the radio, and now at Bulldog Club meetings, who think they have all of the answers, but frequently say things that show a complete lack of understanding of the game of college football or at minimum say things they can’t possibly prove or know for sure as though they were absolute facts. Here’s an interesting article in support of your theory http://bleacherreport.com/articles/512594-college-football-run-vs-pass-which-wins-championships . However, did you consider how mediocre the defenses were for the teams you list below? I didn’t think so. None of those teams were known for defense. That definitely played a part in why the teams listed below didn’t win, including Georgia. As you may recall, we gave up a ton of points in all the games we lost that year, despite scoring points.

The fact is that CMR is not doing anything different so why should we expect the running game to be better. CMR got angry because he really doesn’t know how to fix the running game and never has.

Georgia has perennial top-10 recruiting classes. Georgia also has top-notch running backs in its stable – - all hailed as blue chip recruits. Georgia is one of the most successful college programs in the country, due to sellouts of a 92000 seat stadium and required contributions in order to buy tickets. A fan looks at all this and asks an obvious question and Richt thinks the fan believes he doesn’t know what he is doing? The 6 – 7 record said that earlier.

I’m sorry but I agree with the fan. Im’ glad Mark got passionate but he seemed to have a sensitive spot there. Why the hell do we have an old receiver coaching running backs and an old running back coaching receivers, or at least we used to. I have heard many other fans wonder the same question and I think it was a good question. I don’t know how well they coach behind the scenes, but besides AJ who was a natural superstar, our receivers and runningbacks aren’t a bright spot. Neither is the underachieving line who was supposed to be a top 3 offensive line in nation last year. Richt shouldn’t get aggrevated, just answer the man’s question.

I think the coaching staff really knew what they were doing when all the receivers ran a deep route on that important third and short play against Arkansas on the final drive at the 50. All prasises to special teams though, we can kick a field goal on fourth and one against UCF. I haven’t been coaching 25 years but i can tell you also on third and 8 or more we’re running the draw play up the middle 75% of the time.

I am glad the Bulldawg Nation is alive and well…if you see Richt run a practice, I guarantee you will know he is passionate..and that he rules with an iron fist…Just because he says “hell” doesn’t mean he is a better coach but maybe it shows the some of these idiots who really don’t know football need to think about what they are asking… there is a fine line in winning a national championship and not. If you saw MR yanking players off the field a couple years ago and the fear in the players’ eyes, you would know not to doubt this man’s passion and respect from our boys. Not only does it take a little luck…money, chemistry and yes, sometimes someone being fiery. Maybe when your conference wins 5 national championships with different universities winning it, that this would tell you something else very obvious..you’re going to have a couple breaks along the way to win out in this conference. Also remember it takes a couple special players on both sides of the ball to survive until bowl time…sometimes people have pushed the rules too.. I suspect that all of our programs cannot control 75 young men who come from some tough environments nor the Alumni who may have bent the rules…look at USC and what happened there..they won and bought their trophies…Lane K. at UT, Camgate, OSU etc.

Our program went down for a few years because of CMR’s loyalty to Martinez, which led to a decline in recruiting etc. He has corrected that situation and he made a choice with Grantham.

Yes, winning is important and guys like Saban would have probably pulled the trigger quicker given the same situation. I respect UA’s program and tradition but I am not sure if it was wise to put a statue up of Saban before he retires…
You have to be ruthless in many ways and that is the difference but I will take CMR’s character all day long. Other ruthless guys like Petrino..left their soldiers behind to die in the past and quit before the end of a season…Is that what you want leading your kids???
Now with the DC in Grantham, we just need to get the hogs up front and a running game going to help keep the D off the field to win. This will also keep unnecessary pressure off the Sophomore and we’ll be fine.

I’m backing CMR and I stand behind his Christianity…just because you profess your faith, doesn’t mean you are perfect or that you don’t know what it’s like to whip a little tale, slam a few cold ones. Mark has done all that, he just made a choice to change those things and that leads to an eternal life hereafter. I know behind the scenes and despite the boneheaded actions of a few that CMR is making a difference in many lives. Everybody loves to attack or jump on someone who is trying to live their life the right way. Gooo DAWGS!

What would you say to UGA Alumns from Grad Classes of ‘74, ‘79, ‘80, etc about your performance as HC?

How much of a drain on the running game is having a QB who averages 8 carries a game, only to average in fact less than 2 yards per carry all season long 2010 ?

Who teaches our running backs how to carry a football so they don’t fumble, who calls and designs the plays telling the running backs where to run the football and how to make cuts to get in the open field, who teaches our running backs to have character off the field a guy who was arrested for drugs when he played here, who has been deciding on who is red-shirted (so we see them 2 years All-America then gone to NFL with # 8 overall pick) or rips red-shirt off them in the 3rd Quarter of the 5th game the season already long since shot to Hell.

Who is responsible for all this ?

The head coach paid three million a year to ostensibly hire a coaching staff to make these decisions.

So once again we have Mark Richt saying that he is standing pat on his lousy sorry coaching staff he himself assembled and he himself hangs on to way too long in every single solitary case.

Let’s Defend Bryan McClendon and Mike Bobo. By all means Mark Richt. It is what you do, sir. Yet, here we are in a state which finds only 3 others (FL TX and CA) who have more high school recruits who go on to the NFL – handing Mark Richt the # 7 average recruiting class every year and we are this anemic pathetic irrelevant at the end of the season on the national stage us 14-0 playing a 13-1 team who ends up in the Top 10 after we beat them in the bowl game.

Although i applaud Mark Richt for his feisty attitude toward another, ever so growing, whiner. Last year was one of the worst years that i have seen since the Ray Goff error. But we still suffered through the heart ache and the pain then and we will now too. But low and behold Mark Richt is no Ray Goff, Jim Dannon or Mighty, Mighty Vince Dooly for that notion. Mark Richt will soon go down to be the greatest head coach at UGA history. After we prove to Boise State this year that they are not a true National Championship team and not to mention chase QB Moore all through the hedges and probably in the stands, He’ll wish he had went pro and was getting paid for those same bruises after that Saturday in the Georgia Dome. After South Carolina gets repaid for there lucky gift last year(basically a poor performance by none other than Washuan Ealey who apparently hasn’t lived up to the hype or he just needs to go back to Emanual County Institute where all the whining obviously mattered HA HA) Time to step up or shutup Ealey and Hold on to the football for Christs sake. Thanks for that fumble in the end zone last year against SC. Isiah Crowell will be happy to take your spot if you don’t want it. Needless to say Florida is going to struggle a little bit as they try to catch on to there new scemes, Tennessee will be better, And Mississippi State( i kinda feel for them a little bit after Geargia crushes them this year between the hedges. Before anyone expresses anger at the running game….keep this in mind. Georgia has King and Ealey in the backfield and another recruit coming in. IF the passing game and line don’t step up, then there will not be any lanes open for these guys to run. The problem is not the running back. The Problem is the coaching and lack of a true playmaking QB. UGA has the running backs….they just don’t have any offensive minded coaches who can make a difference.
Please don’t attempt to highlight the indescretions of the RB’s. UGA doesn’t know how to handle their All-Stars. Everytime someone messess up, here comes Richt with a public tounge lashing for the player and a suspension…..Way to develop them Richt. This really teaches what in the long run??? This tells me that you don’t care about developing young men and getting the best from them. If “hell”, is the strongest word CMR ever uses in public, I think he can be forgiven this little transgression. Bet you that any other coach in the SEC has used a lot stronger words. You don’t have to be a mind reader to read the lips of some of the coaches during a game when you see it on TV. Maybe if some folks would get behind the coach instead of always being negative, as you see a lot on these blogs, he would not feel so defensive and lose his temper. He is a better man than me for sure. If I were in his position and getting this kind of crap thrown at me, in a club meeting, no one would accuse me of being too nice a guy for saying what I would say, LOL. I was a career military man and I can guarentee you that I was capable of getting my point across either nicely or not so nicely. The situation warrants the response in most cases and I think CMR is just tired of the same old questions and comments. I hope he can turn in around this year and I am a lot more optimistic than I may have been at the end of last season.

Btw to the comment about Macon having nothing but private schools we did put out a player that went to Alabama ( cause he was suckerd by nick Saban) and now playing in the NFL. Kareme Jackson we was a public school player . Go Dawgs

For all of you critics on here that think CMR can not coach and you know all about coaching, I have a couple of books that might interest you. After reading them, you all should be fully qualified to coach at UGA or any other big school for that fact.
1. “How to Play Football”, by Otis St. Clair, A primer to help you remember what you need to know to become a big time coach.
2. “Play Football the NFL Way” Position by Position”. by Tom Bass. After completing this read, you should be able to draw about 3 million yourself and coach your team to multiple NC’s. You will not need 25 years of experience with your stunning knowledge of the game already.
It is easy to critisize, but damn difficult to lead. Give it some thought, all of you negative people.
GO DAWGS

[...] for the euphemism. I’m not as brash of tongue as some around here. That out of the way, I’d like to talk a bit about the ongoing NFL draft. [...]

Richt’s success in 2002 & 2007 shows Richt can have a big year. What makes it so perplexing, is why things have been on such a dive the last two seasons like the running yards. I think that was all the fan was trying to say, sort of “Hey Coach, you had some great runs in 2002 & 2007, we know you can coach, so what’s been going on the last couple of seasons, Moreno & Musa were great those two seasons, you know?”.

This just shows why we not needing to hot sit Coach Richt. He got the talent and be exposing dominants on SEC with Dream Team. Then we make traitor Gaytor Muschump pay by running East like we runs state. That why Dawgs goning return to rightfull place at top of SEC cause Coach Richt knows how to get talents, coach and then Christians. Coach Richt getting fiesty is exactly what we needs for players to have nasty meaness like Ben Jones to take out dirty players like Fairly and cheating Tigers. We got the Dream Team and chance for national champs in 2011.

WWJD?

He would root for the Red & Black because we puts a G on the helments to honor God and be more Christian. That why Dawgs do the right thing and winning to expose dominants. Just cause we had 7 loss pestalence last year we know we got to stay true to Coach Richt to leading us promised land of Sugar and Crystal footballs. Coach Richt know how recruiting SEC talents and speed then Christainize to build bests team.

I’m ready to see some fired up attitudes in the dawgs program. I love Richt as a coach but would really love to see him light a fire under every player, so the team will play with some fired up passion, not just to win, but to run all over every team they play. It’s about time to regain that Georgia pride DAWGS!!!

I tolds you to stop hot sitting Coach Richt. He best coach for getting players that play and expose talents. He just needs to cast out the wicked players that not using talents. Adams is the one deserving blaming cause he not letting coach Richt cast out the players that not goning expose talents for NFL. Then we reload with more talents and SEC speed like Dream Team. Richt and McG got to getting fiesty with Adams to quit tieing hands and let’s us recruiting and cutting loose like Bammers.

Herschel Walker knows more about how to win a National Championship at Georgia than Mark Richt.

Here’s what Herschel Walker said a while back:

“You can’t do the Run and Shoot or California offense in the SEC,” he said.

“The SEC is about blocking and tackling and running the football. Line it up and go get it.”

That’s also why he believes new Tennessee coach Derek Dooley — who was a young teenager when Walker was playing for Derek’s dad Vince — will succeed with the Vols.

“Derek believes in running the football,” he said. “In the SEC that’s what you’ve got to do.”

‘woof’ ‘woof’ ‘woof’ woof’ ‘woof’!!!!!!!! Amen Coach Richt. Don’t let this small group of the Bulldog Nation this idiot represents make you run for the hills please. Anyone with a brain, that understands the entire body of work on and off the field you and your staff bring to the University, want you guys to stay longer than Joe Pa. has lead Penn State or Bobby ran things at Florida State. I can’t wait to see the team this fall. I am excited to see how much everyone has progressed and gotten better!! Go Dawgs!!!

Some of you Dawgs need get inline cause and stop being traitors. Coach Richt is bests coach and knows how SEC winning. He gets the NFL talents and then reloads if not for Adams. Adams stacks of dung heaps for not letting Coach Richt do Christain thing to cast out stinky players that not using talents in SEC. Then we get more Dream Team by cutting loose stinkys that not playing SEC level.

Sounds like old Richt is getting a little testy. Could it be that he knows his overpaid ass is in a “tight” this season, and, if another four or five losses comes his way, even his buddy McGarity might not be able to cover it for him? I guess we will find out the answer to that question by the end of the Carolina game, maybe even by the end of the Boise State game.

Running game went down cause we got stuck with stinkys players that Adams not letting cut loose. Coach Richt know how coach and is Georgia Bulldogs and Christian. That why he not goning be hot sitting. Now we gets Cromwell and Dream Team and we back on top in right place for Dawgs. We will exposing dominants to beat down teams on schedule and win East. Then two more wins to national champs and West lost talent to NFL.

Finally, THE year to evaluate

Coaches have to be CONSISTENTLY who and what they are. To change personality or demeanor under the gun, will be picked up by the team and who knows how they respond?

This is THE YEAR for the divided Dog Nation talk, speculation, negatives to merge into one unified direction. We win vs Boise AND SC and then run off some nice SEC caliber wins and yes, defeat Florida ……………….. or we change the regime. Period.

Love my UGA DOGS!!

It Ain’t Rocket Science:

Stop using the SEC as an excuse for your lack of results. We can compete there as well as you (and Vandy) have the past 3 years. By the way, how did those last 3 close games with us feel? Get used to Paul Johnson and Staff! georgia is less than a touch down better than us (on paper) and our coaches can out coach yours so you better watch what you say little man. Enjoy your pathetic life-LOOOOOOZER! Hahahahahahaha.

We displaying dominants from winning 9 of last decade. That makes you running high school gimmikey offense nothing but for loosers. Then you gets no NFL talent while we reload with Dream Team.

I thought UGA Alum Fran Tarkenton hit it right on the nail regarding how Richt does not know what’s going on, back in Jan in Bradley’s AJC article, Tarkenton said:

“Right now our program has had three years of regression, and I don’t see any way this thing is going to get out of the ditch. When I read comments like [Richt's] … we’re putting spin on everything. In the meantime Alabama and Auburn and Tennessee are working and kicking our butts and recruiting people and getting coaches that have spread offenses. I mean, can you imagine? We scored two field goals against Central Florida.

“I think Greg McGarity has got to look at this awfully hard, I think the signs are that we have a program that is in big trouble.”

The first two games will tell if Richt has fire in his belly!Lose both and the season goes down hill, with Richt losing his job at the end of the season.Split the two games and see what he does with the Gators and Auburn. This will save his job.As they always say “That’s why they play the game”We will see if the season of 2011 is his year, good or bad.

That why Adams is problem and causing lossses.

Richt needs 9 wins to finish in the top 25 & remain a major college football head coach. He’s going to get 4 easy wins at Ole Miss, Coastal Carolina, New Mexico State, and Vanderbilt. Richt must beat Tennessee, Kentucky & Georgia Tech to get to 7 wins. Then Richt needs to beat South Carolina and Florida, putting him at 9-3, winning the SEC East, and into the top 25.

The sad truth is, Richt only beat 6 teams last season, all had losing records. Teams like Tenessee, Kentucky, Vanderbilt, Ga Tech, Idaho State and Loisiana Lafayette. Any fan could have have coached us to a win by relying on asst coaches. None of those teams were good. What you pay Richt for, is to beat the good teams, Florida, South Carolina, then Auburn, Arkansas, Missisippi State, UCF, and how we lost to Colorado??? Richt’s paid $3 million a year to beat the good teams. Not go 0-6 against winning teams.

Passion is a wonderful thing. Hell, Hitler was very passionate. CMR should take his passion to the players, not the fans. I hope UGA wins but passion alone won’t do the job. I believe they will have a losing record this fall. Alabama and LSU rule the SEC, not UGA, Florida or Tennessee. Up-and-coming teams: Mississippi State, Auburn, South Carolina,, Arkansas. Teams going nowhere: Kentucky, Vanderbilt, UGA, Ole Miss, Florida, Tennessee
