UGA football chatter: O-line shakeup, tailback update and G-Day countdown
5:00 am April 13, 2011, by Tim Tucker
ATHENS — Cleaning out the notebook after Tuesday’s football practice:

Sturdivant
- Offensive tackle Trinton Sturdivant’s third major knee injury occurred in a Saturday scrimmage that was closed to the media and the public, but even those who were there -– the players and coaches -– apparently didn’t realize the severity of it. “We thought it was just a sprain,” center Ben Jones said Tuesday. “Then he calls me [with the news of a torn ACL], and I was, like, ‘Oh, you’re kidding, right?’ … We thought everything was going to be fine.”
- The four players chosen by Mark Richt to draft the teams for the G-Day game –- Aaron Murray and Brandon Boykin on one side, Jones and Christian Robinson on the other -– obviously enjoyed the experience Monday night. They were still bantering back and forth, in good fun, after practice Tuesday. Said Murray: “Boykin and I absolutely dominated the draft.” Countered Jones: “We got a winning team. We got the O-line –- we got Cordy [Glenn]; we got [Kenarious] Gates. . . . I was saying, ‘I’m going to pick my buddies.’ I told my boy Cordy I was going to get him first, and I got him first.” Said Boykin: “I think me and Aaron did a tremendous job picking, and [Jones and Robinson] helped us by picking some not-too-good choices, as well, to start off.”
- Boykin said the “steal of the draft” was his side’s selection of Taylor Bradberry, a walk-on wide receiver. “He’s sure-handed — similar to A.J. Green, just not as fast,” Boykin claimed. “He always makes plays on G-Day.”
- Spring practice has produced no big breakthrough at the tailback position, which awaits the summer arrival of Isaiah Crowell. A hamstring injury has sidelined Washaun Ealey for most of the spring, and a groin injury has slowed Ken Malcome. Caleb King has stayed healthy and “shown flashes,” said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, adding: “I wouldn’t say anybody has stepped out and said, ‘Hey, I’m the man.’”
- Before Sturdivant’s injury, he and converted guard Cordy Glenn were alternating between left and right tackles. Now, Glenn is the obvious starter at left tackle. Offensive line coach Will Friend said Glenn has had a good spring but needs to shed a little weight.
- As for the now-open job at right tackle, Justin Anderson and A.J. Harmon are the top contenders. “I feel good about those two guys as far as seeing potential and seeing the things they can do,” Friend said.
- Anderson started 12 games on Georgia’s offensive line –- seven in 2008 and five in 2009 -– before a short-lived and ill-fated move to the defensive line last year saw him appear in only one game in a season cut short by toe surgery.
- Harmon, entering his fourth season in the program, has appeared in just seven games and started none. Asked if he’s ready to be a starter, Harmon said: “Of course. I mean, it’s been three years. I would hope I’m ready.”
- Bobo on Harmon: “A.J. is a guy who’s got a lot of talent. Hasn’t been consistent enough to play like he should. I think he sees it as an opportunity. A lot of times, when an opportunity presents itself like this, guys tend to step up. That’s what we think A.J. will do; he’s got the ability.”
- The Bulldogs will be back on the practice field Thursday, their only remaining practice before G-Day.
- And speaking of G-Day, former UGA quarterbacks Matthew Stafford, D.J. Shockley, David Greene and Eric Zeier will participate in a skills competition at halftime. Another former UGA quarterback was asked why he’s not participating. “Because I would win,” Bobo said.

Sturdivant’s injury is a crying shame! That guys deserves the chance to have a 6th year of eligibility. I hope Anderson or Harmon are ready. If Bradberry is that sure handed I sure wouldn’t mind seeing him play in the Florida game. lol

A. J. Harmon is probably one of the bestest puzzles to me in some time at UGA. This guy was a top 10 signee who has not even sniffed any sort of signifigant playing time. He is hugh and by all accounts strong. I would love to hear some inside scoop on why he hasn’t played (and I mean even in mop duty).
UGA sure needs he and Anderson to step up. I know what the problem has been with Anderson (grasping playbook). I really hope they are both able to put it together. Do you realize both of these young men were high school All Americans? Unfortunately a big part of the reason for UGA’s demise over the past 3 seasons is that the all everything players we have signed have not produced even average results on the field.

Big question…..Can we get pressure on the Boise QB to make our Average DB’s look good. No pass rush=400+ yards passing for Boise, which means they move the chains a lot and score a lot. That QB needs to be running for his life all night for a Dawg win. ( my key to win)

During the halftime QB competition, David Pollack and Randall Godfrey will be available for photo ops with potential recruits.
At the end of the competition, all will line up in formation for moment of silence for the UGA football program (with highlights of the 2008 Alabama game), followed a motivational speech by Fran Tarkenton.
It is shaping up to be another great day for UGA football.

Hopefully Jarvis Jones will fill those big shoes left by Houston. Nobody else seemed to get in the backfield last season.

Maybe the reason a running back has not stepped up is because the o-line is awful. Mark Richt will never commit to running the ball and that will be his downfall. Wonder who the new coach will be next year?

Man, you really hate that for Sturdivant but that is another reason why depth is so important-you never know when you will have to depend on your reserves. This will give someone else the opportunity to get more reps prior to the season. Whoever it is, I hope they take advantage of it.
In my opinion, the keys for the upcoming season are along both lines. If we perform well in those areas a lot of other things will take care of themselves. Because of Sturdivant’s injury someone has the chance to step up; they need to do it starting yesterday.

Wierd that Murray can have a year, and be compared to best of all time at QB, and lock up his job, but Ealey can have 2 season where he exceeds Walker, and not be compared to the best, and not lock up his job.
Bizarre.

Darren, Ealey cannot be counted on because he has fumbled too much and acts like a moron off the field. He also has been completely MIA in several big games. In his defense though, so has most of the offense.
Caleb King has a golden opportunity right now and it looks like he’s not taking advantage of it. Why am I not surprised?
Sadly, I am indeed very excited about the arrival of Crowell. He may be our only hope.

I think we’ll be fine. I think Brent Benedict should get a look at RT. I don’t like the look of our O-line anyway. I had it set in my mind that Sturdivant was our LT, Gates at LG, Jones at C, Anderson at RG, and Glenn at RT. Sturdivant WAS OUR BEST PASS PROTECTOR and now he’s lost for the season and probably will never step foot on the field for Georgia again. If you watch Sturdivant and his style of blocking he’s the best one we’ve got and now he’s gone. There was a reason he was Freshman All-American and started all 13 games of his freshman season. If he was healthy, he wouldn’t have had to come back for his senior season because he would have been probably a top 5 draft pick in 2010. So sad for him.

One player on defense I’m really excited about is Jarvis Jones. I heard he’s better than Houston. Houston was primarily a pass rushing threat but Jones could be that all-around LB that you want. I want to see some interceptions being made, lots of forced fumbles. Our LBs should be beasts this season but you know how that goes, we have lots of talented players but they never live up to their potential it seems. I just want to see this team put it all together.

How will Stafford do playing from a Hospital bed?
Stafford will win if it involves playing in less than half the competition, fumbling, and throwing more INTs than TDs.

BIG QUESTION – What about the secondary? Our pass coverage last year was softer than a month-old cucumber. How in the world do you justify playing 7-10 yards off the receiver? No rush, no sacks, soft coverage, and some three-and-outs and we could be in for a long season.

Playing career
Bobo played for the Thomasville High School Bulldogs (Thomasville, GA) before playing college football at the University of Georgia (Athens, GA). Bobo was a four year letterman with the Georgia Bulldogs football team from 1994 – 1997. He was the MVP of the 1998 Outback Bowl and holds several Georgia passing records.
As a Senior in 1997 he threw for 2751 yards on 199 completions in 306 attempts and had 19 TD to just 8 INT.
As a coach at Georgia, Bobo has tutored three future NFL quarterbacks in David Greene, D. J. Shockley, and Matthew Stafford.
Nothing very impressive in Bobo resume that is for sure.

Unfortunately young Mr. Studivant was not blessed with the ‘pins’ necessary to support 300+ pounds and the subsequent collisions and pounding that comes with the territory. I can’t imagine how it would feel to realize that your, long-held, dreams just aren’t to be, but by God he’s tried and maybe he’ll try again. Hope it works out for him.
As for a tailback ’stepping up’…anybody thought that all Mike Bobo is trying to do is to avoid ‘awarding’ the job to somebody now and to make sure we go into the pre-season practice with a ‘wide-open’ competition? Remember, Herschel didn’t start his first game.

The UF Gators had 7 offensive lineman practicing this spring- that’s including walk-ons folks. Do you hear their fans bitching and moaning??? Hell no, they go with what they got and the continue to practice hard. Whoever Muschamp is left with will be damn tough for sure.
However if one of our kids unfortunately get hurt we blame the S & C coach or the Oline coach and even the head coach. Folks injury is part of the game. Let me tell you some inside information…last year we did not practice physically and it cost us 5 or 6 games. This year we WILL practice physically and it will cost us some players due to injury along the way- but we will win more games and we are going to be a better team. As a matter of fact I predict we will have the best defense in the SEC. Marshall and Swann are coming soon and will earn starting positions at CB and Safety respectively. We are stacked on defense!

Druid City was a World Basketball Association franchise in Tuscaloosa Alabam that lasted one year (2006) and then folded. About as pertinent as the Druid City comments on this blog I would say. They could not even average 1000 fans at $5.00 for an adult ticket. They sold more kid tickets at $3.00 than adults. Guess they probably couldn’t find 1000 adults there from the sounds of this Druid City. Now do you see any simularities between a failed sports team and the Druid City comments on this blog. Very simular I would say.

Do I smell 6-7 out of Athens…….again???
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Seriously – best of luck to the Dawgs this year – the East is wide open and I think your defense is going to be greatly improved in 2011.
Bama’s defense was Jekyll and Hyde Saban’s first year.
We got beat by Lousiana Monroe!!!!!!
Lessons learned – and it was tough.
The next year – our defense was very good for the most part.
I think UGA is on the verge of being relevent again – but talk is cheap and results on the field is all that matters.
On offense – I actually think Ealey and King are good backs – not great – but very good – but combined with such an under achieveing OLINE – it really made them look bad. Both are hard runners and King is a good pass blocker.
Losing AJ Green will NOT be the end of the world – who were UGA’s receivers when they won SEC titles in 2002 and 2005??? I suggest the current WR corp is comparible. NO AJ Green type receivers on that roster.
Big issue is the OLINE.

Question for you.
How is it that Saban gets a pass for 2010 compared to Richt in 2008.
Both teams preseason ranked #1
Both teams went 10-3
Both teams blew a big lead to their archrival in the last game of the year
Both teams beat Michigan State in the Cap One Bowl.
Both clearly underachieved compared to preseason expectations.

uuugghh….That would be Mike Bobo, But Mike Bobo is not the 6 ft. QB who would attempt to throw the ball away and wouldnt even be able to throw it to the sidelines and it result in a interception.
Joe Cox could never be a coordinator.
If you like Joe that much, I feel sorry for you. In my opinion Logan Gray should have been getting more reps that season instead of the “Senior QB” with experience, give me a break. That worke out well for UGA.

Mr. Uuugghh…
To be completely truthful, most of the plays Joe ran were called by Joe himself using Mark Richt’s checkdowns. Mike Bobo helped Joe identify the reads and work on his footwork and technique.
Richt’s checkdowns have not changed much in his coaching career right down to the hand signals he uses. All opposing defensive coordinators know this and use it to their advantage. So ultimately Georgia does not call the plays, the opposing defensive coordinator does it by simulating the formation, putting the check down in motion. Once they bait Georgia into calling the play they want at the line, the defense shifts to its proper alignment.
This is why you see Georgia continue run on second and long with its very poor running game.
This is also the main reason Coach Richt’s boss told him to go back and study football.

If Harmon steps up, or Bean anderson, with Chris Burnette to Right Guard, that’s a pretty good starting offensive line. No depth though. Georgia natives Chance Warmack, Roke Watkins , JuWuan James and Ed Christian sure would have helped.

Bama Pride,
I think you are right about WR at UGA. I think the DAWGS will be better off in the long run. I think we put in too much of the offense in play, based on Having A.J. and did not develope a consistent offensive game plan. It’s not like the teams UGA played didn’t know that if they contained Green, they could contain 3/4ths of UGA’s offense. I think UGA has a better overall chance of success on offense without one superstar, and with a bunch of good players at key positions. If the offensive line can do a better job, and the running backs step it up, the offense can be pretty good. It is kind of like, addition by subtraction I think.
I feel sure that the defense will be much improved this year.
Just have to wait until they play the game, but UGA has the players. If they are coached up, UGA can be good this year and maybe great next year.
As for Bama. I think they win the West Div. this year. LSU to me, is kind of over hyped. They will be good but I just do not think they bring all that much special to the game this year. I think they are going to have the same problem they did at QB last year. Very inconsistent play at that position.

Ealey could be a very good back if he works and practices hard. But, Herschel was the greatest college RB of all time. The year he won Heisman, UGA averaged less than 100 yards per game passing. All the defenses were keying on him and he still carried the team.

After this year Uga wil have lost the equivalent of two offensive lines to graduation, injury and attrition. This doesn’t include existing serious knee injuries to Sturdivant and Benedict. Why couldn’t Richt and Bobo anticpate this “thinning” of the offensive line and recruit accordingly !? Bama, S. Carolina, and Arkansas have all signed Juco offensive lineman (and Georgia natives) that have significantly helped, It’s like Richt/Bobo can’t see the problem before it’s too late.

You dawgs know what that is because you cry about TECH running a version of it now. Buck’s greatest pass was a 12 yrd pass to Scott. Well perhaps the delusional UGA fans will now not be screaming and cursing at their players in the second quarter of the third game this year because of their unrealistic expectations.
UGA is in for a rough season.
OL….Average to below
RB….waiting on a teenage kid with no experience who missed several qrts of action this past season due to injury….
WR…below average and lost their only SEC calibre threat in AJ Green.
QB…slightly above average though he tends to panic and throw INTs.
DL….Lost only player Houston and experienced interior linement…waiting on a JUCO (My, my. UGA fans just a couple of years ago were belittling the MSUs of the world for taking JUCOs because that was so, so beneath the mighty UGA)
LB….Below average….
SS…Below average
CB…Below average..

I hope Ealey will not transfer and stay at Georgia because I think he has a lot of potential. A lot of the times that Ealey couldn’t finish a long drive last year was because he wasn’t in good enough shape. He only ran the ball 15 times in some games because he was dead tired and couldn’t carry the ball anymore. When he got tired he fumbled. I think CMR is presently working on his endurance along with everybody else that couldn’t go more than 2 or 3 quarters last year.

Hey guys, you shouldnt be too concerned about all these players’ injuries. As a person who is close to alot of players, many of them fake injuries during Spring practice so they won’t have to participate in practice daily because usually most of the positions are already guranteed for the fall so most just (lazily) chill during spring practice and sometimes during Summer camp.

Ealey just wants to play on a better team and for a better coaching staff, like Logan Gray.
He sees the writing on the wall. I can’t imagine him being excited about sharing a few 2nd & long dive plays with Carlton Thomas behind a weak offensive line, carrying out needless 3rd & long play action fakes, and playing for a coaching staff who has already named an inexperienced injury-prone high school kid the starter during a stupid on-field ceremony.

If he works real hard with S&C and can prove when he gets tired he want fumble and will carry the ball in the correct arm slot that Bobo is trying to get him to do naturally then I think he will be a huge help to our running game this year. Both clearly underachieved compared to preseason expectations.
What will the Tide fanbase do if LSU represents the SEC this year, clearly passing Bama in the SEC pecking order?
Here is my reply:
1. Preseason #1 ratings
- Alabama just won the National Title – and we knew that we lost too much to repeat – but we were hopeful.
As for UGA – They were peaking into the #1 position – and had more hype with Stafford and Moreno.
2. 10-3 records
Bama was a dominant 10-3 team – beating up on teams and lost some close wons – although SC beat us pretty good – Auburn game – heart breaker – but kudos to the Barn.
Alabama’s season felt like a legit 10-3 power team with a few miscues.
UGA got blown out by Alabama, Florida and GT in the 2nd half.
UGA also was very lucky to beat Kentucky and a 5-6 Auburn team and just did not look dominant on their way to 10-3.
3. Bowl games – both beat Michigan State.
Did Michigan State make an appearance in our game against them? I thought they did not show up? Why? Because they did not show up – got blown out by a huge margin – totally dominated – 49-7 – and could have been worse. Bama cruised mid way through the 3rd – waterboy played in the 4th.
UGA vs Michigan State – well that was an ugly game – UGA should have won by more points as they were the better team – by far – yet that game left you thinking – why did we win 24-12? both teams did not look impressive – but sloppy and out of sync.
4. Clearly underachieved???
Bama did not underachieve – lost to LSU and Auburn by a combined 4 points.
UGA – really struggled to win games against bad teams – when they should have ripped through them.
5. What happens is LSU reps the WEST nest year?
Some Bama fans will rumble I am sure – but, we know LSU is very very good – and we will be in the thick of it.
Also – Bama won a National Title – in 2009 – and last year – we were very good. I expect this year – we will be very good as well.
I would put Bama and LSU on top of the SEC pecking order. Really have know clue where AU is as losing Fairly and CAM is big – but AU’s staff is pretty dang good and they have some talent. ARK and MS STATE both look good too.
Where does UGA fit in – last year – #9 SEC team – not good
2011?? UGA should be much better with improved defense – I would be concerned with the OLINE. I see alot of Bobo haters – but I think he is a good coach – his QB’s are always good – and his playing calling is better than UGA fans are giving him credit.
My question to you DawginLex – If UGA goes 8-4 – you keep Richt? I know that depends on who you lose to.
Recruiting:
Last years recruiting class looks great on paper – and this year – I think will be very good if UGA starts off beating Boise and SC and finishes strong.
What happens if you lose to Boise, SC, Mississippi State, Florida and Auburn??? Could Happen!!!
Such a HUGE year for Richt – so much on the line this year at UGA.
If UGA starts off 0-2 – I really think Richt will be in trouble.
Good conversation….

Agreed. I do like Ealey and think he has a lot of potential, if he uses it. I was there when Walker was, and enjoyed watching him play. I just think 30 years ago, things were looked at more different than today, I am not in mamby pamby land, just get a little “erked” when some of these people here try to compare someone whom they most likely only hear stories about, and never seen in action. I still believe as a person above stated, if walker showed up for G-day and participated, he would be leading rusher and we would have more defensive players out with concussions….just saying. I am predicting that this will be Richts last year at UGA. These headlines are like a broken record. Please spare me. Every year 50 players get hurt. ————Bottom line is —you cant fix stupid.

Yellow Fuzz: What is the win/loss record of the UGA/TECH games over the past ten years? As in, who won and who lost?

Well well, Yellow fizz is back.
Still planning on setting up your tent again this year outside the Grant field?
What a loser. You are a disgrace to the Tech people that I talk to on your own blogs. Thye don’t claim idiots like you in their fanbase. In fact, they wish you would go away.
We can only hope.

Nothing has changed this year. Injuries are mounting up once again. players that are not panning out like A J Harmon and others. Its just a matter of time over the summer months that UGA will make a run for honorable mention in the Fulmer Cup. Chalk up a loss to Boise with two in a row against SC along with another loss to the Gators.

There a number of teams doing this, ie Tennessee, Texas just to name a few who are or have let the players pick the teams. Do some research before popping off.

That’s too bad for Sturdivant. He was a promising player who has had a tough luck career.
CMR has the players selecting the teams. What other coach does this? No wonder the inmates run the asylum and there are off the field problems.

The reports this during spring practice are somewhat disappointing. I started to get my hopes up but seems the same problems at UGA are still there. Im excited about this class we have signed but then again I have been excited about our previous classes which have seemed to underachieve. Hope Crowell is all that and hope he can make an immediate impact. But then again Ive seen this movie too.

musical chairs, I don’t see us anywhere in the fulmer Cup rankings for 2011.
Our defense is better. I will bet money hat we don’t give up as many points or yards this year. I will also bet money that we don’t give up as many 3rd down conversions.
You complainers act like we got blown out every week!
We lost to SC 17-6 and fumbled away two opportunities.
We lost to Ark 31-24 after giving up a sack and then allowing a TD with under a minute to go.
We lost to Colorado when we fumbled driving for the winning FG
We lost to Florida in OT
A few more stops on defense and all of those games are wins.
You can give up on them if you want to.
I’m predicting a lot of serious crow being eaten by a lot of you.

Dawg in lex……. Didn’t say the dawgs were ranked in the Fulmer cup. I said we just might make a run though during the summer break to bring up worth mentioning. BTW South Carolina Dictated the game from start to finish… Get real …Florida still had the swagger during the entire game and the team just stood around and gave up after Murray’s stupid interception in the end zone in OT. Dude …… Stay off the kool aid but then again you may need it when you and others eat the crow come fall to get the taste out of your mouths.

How exactly did the team “stand around and give up” after Murray threw the int in OT? Uf ran 3 nothing plays from the 25, then kicked a FG.

south Carolina did not dictate the game from start to finish. We couldn’t tackle Lattimore but we also had 2 costly turnovers that finished the game.
the florida game went into overtime.
do you even watch the same games I’m watching?
looking forward to the crow.

This is the beginning of the end for Auburn.

Serious Dawg fans need to start organizing and demanding that Richt be fired. Otherwise, sports writers will be asking the same questions this time a year from now.
Richt represents mediocrity. Saban and Meyer represent excellence and championships. Richt simply isn’t in their class, nor will he ever be. Richt would have to be incredibly lucky to win the division, and the odds against him winning the SEC championship would be at least 50:1.
Those are the simple facts, and there’s no amount of enthusiasm or cheerleading or Top 5 recruiting classes that can get around it.
As they say in poker, “Read ‘em and weep.”
