UGA WR Logan Gray to transfer to Colorado for final football season

Quarterback-turned-wide receiver Logan Gray will transfer to Colorado for his final season of college football.

Gray revealed his intentions to leave Georgia last February and visited Colorado this past weekend. He decided on Colorado on Monday, according to the Brush News Tribune.

“They told me that they have a couple pretty strong wide receivers … but they could definitely use some help,”Gray told the Colorado newspaper. “And then obviously returning punts. They’re looking for another guy to help make an impact on offense and special teams.”

Gray’s younger brother is a student at Colorado, which was a big reason he said he picked the Buffaloes over other options. Gray will be eligible to play next season under NCAA rules because he graduated from Georgia in four years and will be attending a school that has a graduate program not offered at Georgia.

Best of luck to Logan Gray, a good player who can make a contribution for the Buffalos. It is sad it never really worked out at UGA as many expected.

Did we really take one of the highest rated quarterbacks comingout of high school and make him aspire to being nothing but a 3rd string receiver and punt returner. I’m glad he’s happy and proud of him in that he graduated in 4 years (a feat many non-athletes don’t accomplish) but did he really leave UGA for the exact same opportunity he had at UGA?

What’s wrong with this picture? Did we “suggest” something to him?

87dawg – It clearly states he is going into a graduate program NOT offered at Georgia. I’m willing to bet that football wasn’t his main motivation for the transfer.

He is lucky to be going to such a beautiful area. That is one beautiful state. It gets a little chilly in the winter, but those mountains can not be beat. Spent the better part of 7 years there, and found Colorado to be a friendly state with lots to do.
Good Luck Logan, sorry your football career didn’t work out better at UGA for you, but great accomplishments in academics paints a bright future for you.

I always felt Gray should have been playing safety at UGA – this year and last year. He is a good athlete, strong, fast, and sees the plays to be in correct position. He is another player whom I regret that we never found a way to maximize his talent. Best wishes to him in Colorado.

Congrats to Logan. It was refreshing to know that there are still players out there that understand what the word “team” means. He checked his ego at the door, stepped back from the position he was recruited for, and helped out the team wherever and however he could. Grey should have transferred two years ago. He should have realized early on that Richt wasn’t going to utlize him at QB. When it became obvious, Richt, good man that he is, should have leveled with him and tried him at other positions where something may have worked out for both. Grey simply wasted two years of his college football career. So much for Richt.

I have always admired Logan Gray for his great attitude, and really agree with Doc C in that Logan should have been playing safety all along. I know…water under the bridge now. But, there is something wrong with a coaching staff who doesn’t seem to know how to use the talent that players bring. Former quarterbacks make great safeties. Remember late 70’s and then on National Championship team–Scott Woerner–a quarterback in high school turned safety in college. What an impact player using his intelligence and skills.

What seems to get lost on many here is that while Logan Gray is a good athlete, he is not good enough to be a true asset in a skill position at a major college program. So, sorry ‘claytondawg’ but you can’t blame the coaches on this one. Logan Gray as a safety? A safety has to be able to hit, he could not do that.

I’ve always been concerned that Coach Richt has been willing to put his #2 quarterback in the game on punt team duty, either receiving or punting the ball away. He did this with Logan as well as Joe T. With each situation we were one play away from having to go to the #3 quarterback!

Have to disagree with many on here. My guess is that the kid really wanted to give QB a shot at UGA, so he didn’t junk 2 years, he competed. I don’t think he would make a very good safety and if he were a great safety prospect, Richt and staff would be talking to Logan about how one of the safety jobs was his to lose this fall given our situation there. Look at all the reps he would have gotten at safety this Spring. He isn’t a safety prospect.

I think UGA gave him a reasonable shot at WR and Punt return, probably his best fit. At Colorado, there will be one or two WR’s that are more talented, but their roster is filled with 1, 2, and some 3 star recruits. He will immediately be the 3rd or 4th option at WR for them where at UGA he would be in a crowded field trying to get on the field.

Yes, I know CU beat UGA last year. Richt and his staff were outcoached by Hawkins, a man who was fired at a school where going to a bowl game (any bowl game) is the goal.

Good luck to Logan…and yes, a DGD. A team player who, as stated, checked his ego at the door and contributed any way the coaches asked. And he got his degree; good for him! Not being the starting QB had nothing to do with CMR nor Bobo “failing”; not every “highly recruited” player becomes a star college player. Need I list about 100 examples?

My only wonder is, back in February when the announcement was made, Logan said he wanted to play close to home so his parents could see him play. According to Mapquest, it’s 11 hours from Columbia to Boulder; and about 12 hours from Columbia to Athens. So, kinda makes me wonder why he didn’t pick Mizzou or Kansas or…?…

At any rate, good luck to Logan and I hope he feels comfortable returning to Athens and Georgia whenever he has the time!

Jborodawg, if chose to go to Colorado for a number of reasons. His brother is in school out. I do know he tried to get on at Mizzou and the door was not opened for whatever reason. As for the people mentioning Richt wasted his talent. What was his talent outside of being quick? He was asked to move to another position, he was given an opportunity to go over to defense and he chose to stay on offense. Last but not least, to get on the coaches for having a back up fielding punts…Joe T and Logan are very smart players and have good hands. That was why they were out there. Your normal returners have a run first mentality.

Understand things may have changed now that the heat is on but that was back when you played BECAUSE you were a senior not because of how good you were. This is a good example of how decisions like that cost us over the last few years. Kyle, I think Logan Gray got his fair chance at starting at QB. He asked about moving to another position and he moved to WR. He could have moved to defense but didn’t want to. All in all he was not a better option at QB than Joe Cox or Aaron Murray. Murray would have started over Joe Cox had he not been injuried (broken ankle) during his senior year.

ATLSports- Agree about Murray. Not sure about better option than Joe at QB also know that loyalty to a player can sometimes play in more on decisions than with most with CMR. Never did understand if he wanted to play so badly why he didnt give D at least a try. I just hope we dont do the same with Mason and Lemay. With the exception of Greenie and Shock, we havent seen much at QB ( yes- i know Stafford- great player with eyes at NFL- terrible leader and team player. It was all about him)

Not everyone is a Stafford or Green. Some people come in, compete and contribute, but don’t star. That has been Gray’s role and he did it well. In the mean time he took care of his business and graduated in four years. He is taking his UGA degree and going to graduate school, where he will use his last year of eligibility and play with his brother. That’s a great personal story. The NFL is not waiting, but Gray used his skills to get a great education and I am sure he enjoyed himself at the same time.

He also tried to get on the field at UGA by using his talents at punt returner. He has sure hands and he is quick. Remember his strength is as an option quarterback. The running skills are still there. This all says a lot about Gray as a person. That fact that he never became the starter was probably disappointing but he kept at it, contributing and competing. That’s what its all about. Best wishes to the young man, whatever he decides to do.

Yarddawg: Gray was a four-star prospect, rated No. 10 QB in America by one scout service.

He was born in the summer of his 22nd year.
Coming home to a place he’d never been before.
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again.
You might say he found a key for every door.

I don’t know what’s more shocking; the fact Georgia turned a top blue chip QB prospect into a low wage wide receiver, or that after graduating from Georgia, he got into a decent grad program! hahahahahahaha

Gator guy is obviously a complete moron that doesn’t do any research. If he did he would see that UGA is ranked much higher then Colorado academically. In fact, UGA (#56) and UF (#53) are virtually ranked the same in academics.

Best of luck to Logan. He’s a heck of an athlete & was under-utilized at UGA. He (& Durham) should have gotten alot more passes last season. Logan’s a good student as well. I’ll be pullin’ for him to do well at CU.

Isn’t CU looking for a quarterback? Just a thought…he’ll LOVE Boulder…it’s one of the coolest cities in the country! The campus, ironically, is flatter than UGAs…he’ll do well there! Best of luck to him!!!

Good lord people. He was not a blue chip 5 star recruit. He was a 4 star athletic QB in highschool. He was given every oppurtunity to play and start at QB but he was just not consistent enough and could not make all the throws required for the system. Not the coaches fault it just is what it is.

Where is the idiot who kept saying Logan was going to CU and was going to be the starting QB????

He is going to try and get a backup WR spot.

Hansen is the QB and is a 5th yr senior who is the undisputed 1st teamer.

Same idiot GUARANTEED Zach Mett would start at LSU.

Mett is 3rd string.

Its amazing how many know-it-alls on here have all this to say about UGA ruining his QB career or finding another position for him..Funny how when other programs do it and yes it happens with alot of players that go to a Div 1 school and find the depth chart or competition is much greater…You can bet that probably at any major level Div 1 college program, Logan would have had a hard time being the starter…too much talent at these schools at the QB position…Logan wanted to play and wanted to play and contribute, not be 2nd or 3rd in line, can’t blame him or the coaches for that…the fact that he was a team player, to me earns him a ton of respect…Again too many get caught up in the number of stars coming out of high school that a kid has…When will you learn that the only way you can judge if a kid will live up to the hype, is when they get on campus and actually starts participating in workouts…success in high school does not always transfer to success in college..with that being said…I think that Logan has no doubt been successful in many ways at UGA not only on the field but as a student athlete…..go dawgs and good luck Logan…

Stinger:
The mouth breathers saying Logan “got a raw deal” or that he “was screwed by CMR” are the same clowns that want John Gruden as our next HC.

Logan is far too small to be a QB in D-1. What I saw was that his throwing motion didn’t work in the pocket behind those huge OL. Some QB’s (Aaron Murray, Drew Brees, Doug Flutie) can be short and have no problem if they have the right motion.

He did have good quicks and looks like a prototype for slot receiver.

Logan beat out Murray over the Spring, really showed Murray up on G-Day. Yeah, Gray’s a better QB than Murray, but that ain’t sayin a whole lot. Murray went 0-6 against good teams last year.

Transferring–good for Gray. If Coach Richt’s gonna just start players at QB wh9 clearly arn’t even #2 on the depth chart, what’s a guy gonna do? Transfer, the more guys that do, the quicker Richt’s out.

No stinger, there really is not a divided opinions on Logan Gray. It is what it is. What you are reading is just a handful of folks finding their latest excuse to play the only worn out song they know. Logan Gray has nothing to do with that. It could have just as easily have been an article about turf management services. It wouldn’t be the right kind somehow..

Bo and Terry-the same idiot

THERE YOU ARE. I WONDERED WHERE YOU HAVE BEEN.

Gray can’t play QB at CU much less Georgia.

how ’bout that Zach Mett? 3rd string at LSU. Already recruited over for next year with a stud freshman coming in.

Your 2 predictions about Gray being the starting QB at CU and Mett starting at LSU aren’t exactly working out are they?

Abused again. I have defeated you so many times and proved you ignorant that it actually is getting boring

April 12th, 2011

My dad and all of my paternal side family of his generation are GENUINE Florida Gators from Sarasota, Boca Raton and Jacksonville and Pensacola. I had the pleasure to call one of them two weeks ago and he is now 86. Retired south Florida HS principal he is.

We spoke of his Gators ( two of his brothers played for them) and he said ” Cuz, until Spurrier arrived as a coach ( early 90s) we were nothing” . “NOTHING” means no aspirations, no future, no being, just nuttin goin on. Down and out is another definition.

Yes, Florida for about 20 years has done well and they ahve owned my Dogs. I am in my 60s now and so I know our REAL HISTORY.

College ball is about traditions and revivals and reversals of fortunes. Long term and currently, UGA owns Florida ………….always has, always will. My Gator cousin agreed with me.

Twenty or twenty one years?? That ain’t nuttin and my relative knows that Florida will be returning to their former level of nothingness. His words, not mine.

Goooooooooooooooooooooo Dogs.

Doesn’t sound like a transfer to me. If I understand correctly, he graduated from UGA and has decided to pursue a masters degree at another school. If he has eligibility left and wants to play, good for him. CU has a beautiful campus, 30 + miles to rocky Mtn. National Park, great skiing in Summit County about 1-2 hrs away, so sounds like a great set up for him.I wonder what advanced degree he is pursuing that UGA did not offer for him to have to go elsewhere? Anyone know what that might be? My Missouri relatives and friends told me that he was a very good high school qb., and that when he signed, we were going to get a good one. Sorry that it did not work out for him, but he is certainly not the first one to have that kind of an experience. I wish him well and hope that he gets on the field with the Buffs this fall.

Don’t forget you also have Makiri Pugh (Spelling?) out of Charlotte at CB that transferred to CU from the Dawgs. Now that CU lost those two good corners, will Pugh compete for some playing time? I hear the new coaches like the way the QB has played this Spring.
